Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 2nd October will be Spike Lee's comedy drama BlackkClansman. The film is a provocative exploration of American race relations. In the midst of the 1970s civil rights movement, Ron Stallworth becomes the first black detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department. He sets out to prove his worth by infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan and convinces his Jewish colleague to go undercover as a white supremacist. BlacKkKlansman uses history to offer bitingly trenchant commentary on current events -- and brings out some of Spike Lee's hardest-hitting work in decades along the way. The following week on Tuesday 9th October the feature will be the musical romantic drama A Star is Born. In this new take
on the tragic love story, Bradley Cooper plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers--and falls in love with-struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer... until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams CULTURE NIGHT. The events organised at various locations around the town on the recent culture night were very successful covering topics such as art, lantern making, music, politics, dance and film. No better place than Dingle to be able to host such a wide variety of culture related activities on the same evening!!. Well done everybody. TWINNING. The American delegation from our Twin Town of Santa Barbara in California were very impressed with the hospitality offered to them during their recent visit. They were accompanied this year by their other twin friends from Peurto Vallarta in Mexico. If you wish to be on the Dingle plane to California in 2019 put your name on the list asap as spaces are limited. THE DINGLE DANCER. Copies of our world champion dancer David Geaneys latest dvd are now on sale in the familys Dingle Pub in Main Street. This dvd would be an ideal gift with a difference for any occasion or perhaps the kick start for ones Christmas shopping list. FÉILE BIA. Its that time of year again for the mouthwatering Food Festival here in our town from October 4th to 7th. The line up of outlets both local and from various parts of Ireland has been increasing each year and judging by the demand so far 2018 should exceed all previous records. So no excuses folks just get out there to any part of town and sample the best of food and beverages that make Dingle the undisputed food capital of Ireland . Congratulations to REEL DINGLE and MURPHYS ICE CREAM on being named in the Top 30 Food Experiences In Ireland by the Irish Independant last week. TIDY TOWNS. A quick glance at the annual National Tidy Towns Results show Dingle was awarded 8 extra marks this year bringing the total to 298 (just a mere 41 marks short of national winners Listowel). I will at6 West Kerry Live
tempt to summarise the full report in our next edition. However this years adjudicator was very thorough and highlighted buildings and areas that really need attention most of which can be improved with the owners and /residents cooperation. The really disappointing but not surprising piece is that for the first time in 30 years Dingles mark in the Tidiness and Litter Control section was reduced and they said that litter was visible virtually throughout the town on adjudication day July 26th. If you wish to read the full script google tidy towns results 2018 and click on reports. Happy Reading. Well done to Annascaul and Cloghane Brandon the other entrants from the Peninsula on the improvement their results this year. Thank You A big thank you to Carl O'Flaherty for his very good book on Dingle and it's people. The book is now in it's second print and everyone should have a copy. From the first page with Gerry Curran and his memories of the making of Ryan's Daughter to Timmy Joe's ticking bomb. And last but not least, Gene Courtney knowing Liam Neeson. It could only happen in Dingle! Thanks Carl for all the hard work. Farming News
Fund is an initiative of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine under its national Forestry Programme 2014 -2020.
COMMONAGE MANAGEMANT PLANS All farmers in GLAS who have a share in a commonage are by now aware that they are required to complete a Commonage Management Plan (CMP). Failure to do so will result in a delay In their payment being issued, or worse, being excluded from the scheme and being asked to pay back any previous payments. The onus is on assigned advisors to complete these CMPs, however these advisors cannot complete said plans unless they receive certain information from the commonage shareholders.
The DAFM afforestation scheme already covers 100% of the cost of establishing native woodlands and also pays an annual premium to the landowner of up to €680 per hectare payable each year for 15 years. The proposal under the WEF will be for an additional top up of €1,000 per hectare by the business as a once-off payment for farmers and other private landowners. The WEF is being run on a pilot basis until the end of the current National Forestry Programme 2014-2020 and the outcome of this pilot phase will be used to inform the design of the next Programme. DAFM has worked with a range of stakeholders on the design of the
The essential information includes the following: a) current and proposed stock type and b) stocking levels on their commonage, c) identification markings and d) location of same on animal, e) share of commonage farmed on all commonages, f) a copy of 2018 BPS and finally g) the appropriate fee. Failure to provide any of this information is causing delays in processing these CMPs. Many advisors and farmers are becoming frustrated that some feel it is within their right or remit to delay payment for others and withhold payment for the CMPs, themselves. The DAFM’s own GLAS section in Johnstown Castle is so anxious to resolve the situation that they are about to issue a text to all GLAS farmers in this situation. Farmers are advised that before they contact their advisor, they should ensure that they have provided all the documentation, information and payment, first. DAFM sources have gone on to say that should a commonage stakeholder not comply with the necessary requirements, they may be omitted from the CMP. There is a possibility they may be reinstated later, but if not, there will be a clawback of 100% of their GLAS payment since joining in 2015, or so. Currently what is at stake here is 15% of the 2017 payment which amounts to €750, at a maximum. If the processing and completion of these CMPs is delayed any further, the stakes will be much higher, with the entire 2018 GLAS payment being delayed for both you, and your neighbours, who have already provided both the necessary information and payment. Its worse, the payment for those who are non-compliant may be lost altogether. If you have any queries regarding same, contact GLAS Commonage Section at 0761064451, or check the list from a) to g) above and ensure that the advisor assigned to your commonage has received all of these items, to avoid delay. And also, please be aware that when you receive the DAFM Text notification, every advisor will also be aware of the content of this text, so instead of reaching for the phone, you may need to reach of a pen, and some documentation. ANC PAYMENTS WORTH OVER €185.6 MILLION ISSUED: Payments worth over €185.6 million under the 2018 Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme and Areas of Specific Constraint (Islands) Scheme, began to arrive in bank accounts last week, in the midst of the excitement of the Ploughing Championship. The less said about the ploughing debacle, the better. Also, many consider the delivery of the ANC payment somewhat cynical, and manipulative, as it allows Government politicians to walk amongst us, with hindrance or hassle, as farmers have been paid-off”. Apparently almost 77,000 farmers have now been paid. Many however have not received their payment, and this may be for a number of reasons. You may have not reached your annual average stocking levels, or there may be an issue with a claimed area on your BPS application that is preventing payment being processed. You may also be in the midst of an inspection process, and your payment can’t be sent forth until the case is finalised and the boom is closed. In any case, this may be a case for your advisor to sort out. And remember, this is the time when bills are due as well as payments are expected, so get this sorted out, so you can keep the wolf away, and pay the ferryman. NEW WOODLAND ENVIRONMENTAL FUND This fund will allow public-private collaboration for creation of native woodlands. Andrew Doyle T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine, announced a new “Woodland Environmental Fund” to boost the creation of more native woodlands in Ireland. This new initiative provides an opportunity for businesses to partner with the Government and Irish landowners and get behind the national effort to plant an additional 3 million native trees between now and 2020. The 12 West Kerry Live
The current Native Woodland Scheme has an annual target for 2019 and 2020 under 450 ha/ year. The main species planted under this scheme are Oak, Alder and Birch. The WEF aims to establish a framework for all businesses interested in using the establishment of native woodlands as a Corporate Social Responsibility. The initiative itself consists of the following steps; STEP 1: Farmers and other landowners interested in planting native woodlands may opt into the WEF as part of their standard application under DAFM's existing Native Woodland Establishment Scheme. STEP 2: DAFM undertakes its standard evaluation procedure (which assesses the environmental and silvicultural suitability of the proposal) and, if appropriate, issues approval for the planting of native woodland. STEP 3: The registered Forester (or Forestry Company) working on behalf of the landowner, provides a participating Natural Capital Facilitator (NCF) with details of the proposed woodland. STEP 4: That NCF then connects with current or future business clients that wish to contribute to the fund, and presents them with a list of native woodlands with planting approval. STEP 5: Business can engage NCFs to describe or measure in a scientifically verifiable manner, the environmental benefits that are likely to be generated by the new native woodland. These could include, for example, an improvement in water quality in local rivers and streams, the positive impact the woodland will have on biodiversity in the area, or the amount of carbon that will be captured as the woodland develops. STEP 6: An individual business can then decide to support a particular project that best fits its requirements regarding size, location, and the types of environmental benefits that are most relevant. FARM CONSOLIDATION RELIEF: In an area like West Kerry where farm fragmentation is common, and causes many hardships and delays in the daily running of a farm, this relief may be of interest to some or many. The Finance Act 2017 provides for a relief from Stamp Duty called Farm Consolidation Relief. You cannot claim the relief until the Minister for Finance makes a Commencement Order. For the relief to apply, a farmer must sell and buy land in order to consolidate their farm holding. Where the relief applies the rate of Stamp Duty on the purchase is 1%. The relief also applies if the land is transferred as a gift. How do you qualify for the relief? 1. You must be a farmer i.e. a person who spends not less than 50% of their normal working time farming. If you are purchasing as a joint owner, only one of you must be a farmer. 2. You must sell land and buy other land in order to consolidate your holding. You must sell and buy within 24 months and/or on or after 1 January 2018 and before 31 December 2020. You can also claim the relief if you receive the other land as a gift. 3. You must have a consolidation certificate issued by Teagasc. 4. You must intend to retain ownership of the land and use the land for farming for a period of at least 5 years from the date that you claim the relief. 5. The instrument (written document) transferring the land to you must be executed (signed, sealed or both) on or after 1 January 2018 and before 31 December 2020. 6. The instrument must contain a certificate. The wording of the certificate is:
Pat Hanafin
“It is hereby certified that [specify the name of each purchaser recited in the instrument] is/are entitled to claim farm consolidation relief in accordance with Section 81C of the Stamp Duties Consolidation Act 1999 as inserted by section 68 of the Finance Act 2017”.
Septic Tank Emptying & Drain Cleaning
For the purposes of this situation, land means agricultural land; land suitable for occupation as woodlands on a commercial basis; and such farm buildings are as of a character appropriate to the land. “Land” does not include farm houses or the land occupied with such houses unless the houses are derelict or unfit for human habitation. The land must be situated in Ireland. A Consolidation Certificate is a certificate issued by state advisory service to the farmer who is selling and purchasing land to consolidate their holding. The certificate identifies the land involved; the owners of the land; and certifies that they are satisfied that the sale and purchase is for the purposes of consolidation. FARMER'S FORUM: On Friday, 5th October from 7:30pm at An Díseart, Dingle the annual Farmer’s Forum will again take place during the Dingle Food Festival where the discussion will be around “Farming and Energy – a Time of Transition”. There is a lot of talk about how the weather is changing, how that links to climate change and how we're all going to have to move away from fossil fuels but what is it all going to mean for farmers and others on the Dingle Peninsula? What are rural communities doing to take control of their energy futures? What can farmers do to save money? What is the potential for farmers to make money from this transition? Join us to share your views on this and hear speakers from Gas Networks Ireland, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the Marine and Renewable Energy Institute, Manna Organic Store and Teagasc. See the advert in this issue for further details.

The “Leabhrán go Scannán” series of workshops started at the weekend with a group of talented, creative teenagers. We are very encouraged and excited for the result of this project which will be a short animated film based on the story of pirate queen Grainne Mhaol, interpreted in their own style and through Irish. A public showcase event will be held in the Dingle Hub in December 2018 to premiere the film and it will be submitted to the Young Animator of the Year Awards which are held during Animation Dingle in March each year. This is a collaborative project between the Dingle Hub and Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB) and is sponsored by TechSpace, Creative Ireland Kerry, Údarás na Gaeltachta and Ealaín na Gaeltachta.

Novel Fundraiser at The Boatyard The Boatyard Restaurant, Dingle will be hosting a novel Fundraising evening this October 14th to benefit the Camphill Community, Dingle. A ‘Swap Party’ will see the chefs and kitchen staff unleashed on the public in the restaurant, while the waiting and front of house crew will be in charge in the kitchen! What could go wrong? A great evening is planned, starting with a drink on arrival at 7.30pm, followed by 3 delicious courses with accompanying fresh, organic vegetables from the Camphill garden. There will be live entertainment and spot prizes to give away too on the night. Camphill Communities of Ireland is part of an international charitable trust working with people with intellectual disabilities and other kinds of special needs. Camphill Community Dingle live and work alongside people with special needs. They focus on an individual’s abilities, enabling potential through meaningful work, activities and life skills. Camphill Dingle is a great place full of energy and positivity where they grow their own vegetables, salads, herbs and berries. Like all charitable organisations they can always do with some help, so chef Caroline Danaher came up with the idea of the Swap Party. Sunday the 14th of October is our last day of the season in the Boatyard, so they are going out with a bang, (hopefully not literally, with that gang in the kitchen). Why not help raise some euros for a great cause while enjoying an evening of bia, craic agus ceol. Tickets are €50 each, with €25 going directly to Camphill Dingle. Tickets are limited so get them before they are gone, they are available from The Boatyard Dingle and also from Camphill Community. 16 West Kerry Live

Butternut Squash, Sage and Blue Cheese Risotto Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is still one of my favourite risottos, especially at this time of year when squash and pumpkins are in season and matched with blue cheese is a classical pairing. Think of a risotto as a base in which you can put whatever vegetable or meat or fish is in season. Hopefully this recipe will take away the idea that a risotto is complicated, it is not. For all risottos the method is the same, you always start by sweating the onions slowly, then add the rice which is followed by warm stock and the vegetables or meat all in stages while it cooks. I take it one step further by adding the puree of the vegetable, this really brings out the flavour of the vegetable that you are using and it means you are not adding loads of cream to the end. The blue cheeses I would recommend especially this time of the year are either Kerry blue, Cashel blue or Bellingham blue. Ingredients
Method Prepare the butternut squash purée by placing 400g of the squash into a pot with some butter and a light stock, bring water to simmer and then cook until tender. Place into a blender and blend until it becomes a fine purée, season well with salt and pepper. To start the risotto, put a wide based pot on a medium heat, add some oil then add in the onion, some chopped sage leaves and a small amount of butter and salt. Allow this to cook at this heat for about five minutes until the onion is soft and translucent. You can now add in the rice and allow it to toast in the pot for about five minutes and then add a ladle of warm stock. Keep cooking it at a medium temperature allowing the stock to soak into the rice. Continue to do this and keep adding more stock and keep stirring until it is the rice is cooked. Meanwhile in a medium to hot pan add some oil and then add the rest of the squash. Cook this for about five minutes while tossing it in the pan to give it some colour. To finish the dish, add some squash purée into the cooked rice and heat through. Add the squash cubes and stir everything together. Season really well with salt and black pepper. To serve
250g risotto rice (Aborio or Carnaroli or Vialone Nano varieties)
Make sure the rice is of loose consistency - add some more purée if it is too stiff. Add some blue cheese and garnish with some fried sage leaves.
1 butternut squash, peeled and cut into cubes,
Enjoy!!!

Are we getting Fed-up with the F-Word? Irene Ní Fhlannúra This week Cancer Research UK have warned us that obesity is set to eclipse smoking as the biggest cause of cancer in UK women by 2043. This is just the latest of an enormous body of research which identifies being overweight and obese as risk factors for nearly all chronic illnesses and premature death. However, this news does not come as a shock because we have passively accepted being fat as something that just happens to us. In fact, much of the chatter this week focused on the harm “fat-shaming” and “fatism” is causing, particularly among younger people, who feel discriminated against due to their body shape and size. Judgement and discrimination have no place in society, but the health risks of unhealthy eating and lifestyle patterns simply cannot be downplayed to appease the politically correct. Where do we go from here? Do we hang around, piling on the pounds, while politicians try to figure out what to do? Or take a long, hard look inside our own kitchen cupboards and point the finger at the culprits of our demise! Our diet has changed more in the last 60 years than it had in the previous 10,000 years, and not for the better! Together with sedentary lifestyle, this rapid shift from unprocessed foods to a diet which trades nutrition for cheaply produced "frankenfoods" are central to our declining health. It is not surprising that alongside rising obesity rates is the significant increase in degenerative diseases such as heart disease, adult and childhood cancer, arthritis and diabetes. These diseases represent the increasing inability of the body to cope with modern environmental and lifestyle challenges. The poor nutrient content of our food and the added burden of toxicity it presents is the double-edged knife with which we eat. A glance around any supermarket reflects our demand for fake food by the volume of shelf space dedicated to processed foods, ready-made meals and soft drinks. While the food and pharmaceutical industries grow in profits, we grow fatter and sicker. The undeniable cozy relationship between the two industries can no longer be disregarded as conspiracy. A real and sustainable revolution for change must begin in our homes, at meal times and through our food choices. Professor Dónal O’ Shea, head honcho on obesity in Ireland, admits that we have created an “obesogenic” environment, in which being healthy has become more difficult and less attainable. Again, the underlying tone of such statements glosses over our own complicity in our health and takes away our accountability to make the necessary changes to improve our well-being. It is well-documented that socio-economically disadvantaged people are the fattest and unhealthiest of us all, which puts a large proportion of our population at risk of disease and early death. People on lower incomes are least likely to question the integrity of cheaper foodstuffs and its impact on their health. They also have less opportunity to access education about nutrition and are at the mercy of the food industry to provide nutritional information through labelling and marketing of their produce. This is a dodgy set-up to say the least and has undermined our ability to feed ourselves and to trust our instincts when it comes to food choices. The notion that unprocessed whole foods are a luxury and that preparing our own meals is impractical are the kind of lies urging us to out-source our nourishment and surrender to the junk-food merchants. Enough of the bad news! Fortunately, food fashions are always changing and finally may be turning for the better. Forecasts of Irish food trends according to Fáilte Ireland are heading back to our roots. Local and regional foods are firmly back on the menu and the demand for homemade and in-house produce is also on the rise, reflected in the growing popularity of Farmer's markets and artisan foods. The growing interest in food sourcing and preparation must not be a missed opportunity to put nutrition back on the table for everyone. Awareness, education and access to affordable fresh produce is at the heart of our recovery. Health begins at home, in the food, water and environment that we live in. We can all make huge improvements to our health by preparing our meals using fresh, identifiable ingredients. No labels, no bells or whistles, just honest food that has grown, flown, swam or ran and that does not require a chemistry degree to decipher its
origin or content. This is the most effective way to regain control of our spiraling health crisis and to provide the body with real nourishment to fight disease and counter obesity. It’s time to retreat to the kitchen and start our own revolution with our pots and pans – make some noise and get cooking! Best of luck to the Dingle Food Festival 2018! National Breastfeeding Week La Leche League Dingle / West Kerry Cake and book sale, Gairdín Mhuire, Sunday the 30th September Since the beginning of human history we have predominantly lived in tribal and community structures. The skills of caring for families and feeding babies have, therefore, been passed on from one generation to the next. A nursing mother who is feeding her baby in the most natural and beneficial way – beneficial both for the baby and the mother - often requires the support and guidance of more experienced women. However, during the last one-hundred years, approximately, this continuity of support was broken and, mothers, who may not be able to rely on the skills and experience of other family members, are often left alone struggling. This is where different support groups can prove invaluable for mothers in need of help. La Leche League (LLL) is a voluntary organisation which was founded in the USA by a small group of mothers who felt the need to create a more consistent peer-to-peer support group where experienced mothers could share their knowledge. Ireland joined LLL in 1966 and there are now 40 LLL groups and over 100 Leaders in Ireland. Every local LLL group holds informal monthly meetings where topics discussed include aspects of pregnancy, parenting and breastfeeding. It is helpful for mothers to come along while pregnant to learn about breastfeeding, and reassuring to attend after baby is born. Babies are especially welcome at meetings. Each group has a lending library of books and leaflets on childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting which is available to anyone attending meetings. Mothers can ask questions and discuss any concerns they may have with the other mothers during the discussion, or privately with the Leader after the meeting. Meetings are organised by LLL Leaders – volunteer mothers who have enjoyed nursing their own babies and who see the importance of helping other mothers develop a happy nursing relationship. They have completed an accreditation programme and are familiar with breastfeeding techniques as well as current research. They organize the monthly meetings and are available at any time, day or night, to speak with a mother in person or on the telephone. Home visits can also be arranged. La Leche League Dingle / West Kerry group meets on every second Friday of the month at 10.30 a.m. in the Dingle Community Hospital. The meetings are a great place where mothers can share, talk, listen or learn and make new friends with a cup of tea or coffee to hand in a friendly homely atmosphere. Coffee mornings are also held in Grey’s Lane Bistro at 11.00 a.m. on the last Saturday of the month. In order to raise awareness of the importance of normalising breastfeeding and to share information about breastfeeding support groups and organisations, Ireland celebrates National Breastfeeding Week in the first week of October. The Dingle/West Kerry group will hold a cake and book sale on Sunday the 30th September at 11.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at Gairdín Mhuire Day Care Centre on Green Street, Dingle, to highlight its services as a facilitator for mother-to-mother breastfeeding support as well as to raise funds that are much needed to cover the cost of running the group. So, come along and meet us on Sunday and we will tell you more about our work! Donations of cakes and books would be greatly appreciated. Most importantly, everyone can contribute to celebrating the breastfeeding week by simply helping to normalise breastfeeding, within their family or in the public sphere. Dingle/West Kerry Leaders are: Aisling (087 3685490) Evelin (087 6957291) Fionna (087 9711342) Sylvia (087 6636635) 30 West Kerry Live

• Engaging 3,652 Clean Coasts volunteers • Removing over 32 tonnes of marine litter from our coastline 32 beach cleans took place all over Kerry’s coast as part of the Big Beach Clean – a huge well done to everyone who participated! Each year millions of tonnes of marine litter enter our seas and oceans, resulting in environmental, economic, health and aesthetic challenges. Clean Coasts invited volunteers to join this global coastal cleanup helping remove marine litter from our beautiful coastline and in turn protecting our coastal habitats and marine life. During the Big Beach Clean, Clean Coasts volunteers were asked to carry out marine litter surveys to quantify the amount and types of litter on Irish beaches. These surveys are aimed at heightening awareness about the issue of marine litter and serve as an indicator of the magnitude of the problem. Speaking about the Big Beach Clean, Sinead McCoy, Clean Coasts National Manager said, “We are so lucky in Ireland to have such spectacular sandy beaches and rocky shores but each year millions of tonnes of litter enter our seas and oceans causing environmental, economic, health and aesthetic challenges. We all have a responsibility in caring for our coastline so the Clean Coasts programme is incredibly proud of the amazing volunteer effort that joined this call to action over the past weekend, helping to remove marine litter from our beautiful coastline and aid in the protection of our coastal habitats and marine life”.

Cromane Notes Jane Casey LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 20th September in the Cromane GAA were 25, 7, 14, 27. There was no winner of the 9,500 Jackpot. Four prizes of €40 each went to Micheal & Eileen Carey, Lonart -Ticket sold by Kathleen O'Sullivan. Sarah Kelly Tobin, Tullig - Annual Ticket. Johnny Casey, Cromane Cross - Ticket sold by Christine Casey. Barry Fitzgerald, Listowel - Ticket sold by Jane Casey. Cromane GAA DONNCHADH RETIRES: Donnchadh Walsh, our All-Star, announced his retirement last Friday. Of course, the news was met with initial sadness that his time in green and gold had come to an end but that emotion was quickly replaced by immense pride for everyone involved with Cromane GAA and beyond. He has been an inspiration, an idol, and a great teammate within our club. Some heartfelt tributes have flowed his way since his announcement, but for us, he was a star well before he received that incredible national accolade back in 2015. That’s because Donnchadh is much more than a Cromane man who donned the green and gold, he is an incredible influence on the club and community in Cromane. Quietly-spoken but with a steely focus, he leads by his actions on, and off, the field of play. Donnchadh has represented our club with great honour and gave us some joyous moments. Those moments will become great memories. If there is one player that has shown the value of hard work and dedication it is Donnchadh. He has reached the highest levels because of those values. During his busy career with Kerry, and developing work as a physiotherapist, he still found time for club activities. For example, in July of this year - at the height of the inter-county season - he was still available to visit our club summer camp and pass on his advice to the boys and girls taking part. Last winter, he managed to re-energise dozens of our over-55s in a 'Get Strong, Live Strong' exercise programme in our community centre - another selfless act on his behalf, and one that benefits the whole community. He has sacrificed a lot to be successful with Kerry, and we have followed him with great pride, revelling in the appearance of ‘Cromane’ in match programmes up and down the country.
This gave us an early second-half cushion of 1-6 to 0-4. By the 42nd minute, we had added two further goals via Finbar Casey and a superb Darren Houlihan top corner finish to put the game to bed as we extended our lead to 3-6 to 0-4. In the final quarter a series of Jerome Flynn points were answered through Cromane points coming from a Darren Houlihan free, another Sean O'Sullivan point from play and a lovely lofted effort from centre-back Sean Walsh in injury time. Well done lads, a nine-point win in the end: 3-9 to 0-9. NOTE: Many thanks to the Milltown-Castlemaine club for forming a guard of honour for Donnchadh Walsh, who had announced his retirement from inter-county football yesterday. A lovely gesture. Scorers: Darren Houlihan 1-2 (0-2 frees), Donnchadh Walsh 1-1, Sean O'Sullivan 0-4, Finbar Casey 1-0, Mikey Houlihan, Sean Walsh 0-1 each. Team: Paudie McMahon; Liam Teahan, John Michael Foley, Brendan Foley; Finbar Casey, Sean Walsh, Conor Sugrue; Donnchadh Walsh, Darren Houlihan; Shane O’Neill, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Mikey Houlihan; Sean O’Sullivan, Danny O’Shea, Niall Dennehy. Subs: Shane Ahern for PP O'Sullivan 45th minute, Sean Teahan for Danny Shea 48th minute, Emmet Casey for Sean O'Sullivan 53rd minute, Cathal Crosby for Shane O'Neill 53rd minute, Brice Dourieu for Niall Dennehy 55th minute, Aidan O’Sullivan for Finbar Casey 55th minute, Eamon O’Connor. FIXTURES: Saturday, September 29 - Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship quarter-final: Cromane v Milltown-Castlemaine in Milltown at 3.30pm. Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup semi-final result: Cromane 3-9, Milltown-Castlemaine 0-9 Cromane qualified for the Mid Kerry O'Sullivan Cup final on Saturday evening after a three-goal win over Milltown-Castlemaine in Cromane. In the end, three second half goals in a ten-minute spell - from Donnchadh Walsh, Finbar Casey, and Darren Houlihan - sealed the win. Milltown-Castlemaine started much the brighter and led by 0-3 to no score after 10 minutes, two Jerome Flynn points being the highlights. However, they failed to score for the rest of the half and as the game wore on Flynn was the visitors' only real scoring outlet. Cromane finally got off the mark in the 13th minute courtesy of an excellent Sean O'Sullivan point and from on we began to gain control of the contest. Another Sean O'Sullivan point from play was followed up a Darren Houlihan free to level the game at 0-3 apiece. When Mikey Houlihan sliced through the Milltown-Castlemaine rearguard in the 25th minute to split the posts we led for the first time and would never relinquish this lead. A fine Donnchadh Walsh point just before the break received one of the afternoon's biggest cheers as we led at halftime by 0-5 to 0-3. We were a different side after the break. Jerome Flynn (with a punched point) and Sean O'Sullivan traded points before Donnchadh Walsh burst through on goal in the 36th minute to bundle home our first three-pointer.

Peter White For anyone with even a passing interest in whiskey, the Dingle chapter of the Irish Whiskey Society would like to welcome you all to an improved version of what was one of the whiskey tastings of the year in 2017, not just in this town but the entire country! During this year we have been lucky indeed to have had several whiskey ambassadors’ from Ireland’s distillery’s travel to Dingle to present their wares to us and for October’s whiskey tasting, we hope to expand on that theme. IWS Dingle have arranged to have up to eight of them in the same room together and just to add a bit of craic and a further twist to the standard tasting format, they will present each other’s whiskeys blind. In other words, they will be presenting not their own brands but those of the other presenters, without knowing just what it is they are presenting. The event will take place on Friday 12th October from 7.30pm at the Dingle Crystal Workshop in Ballinaboula, Dingle. We look forward to having each of them explain to us just what it is that motivates them to do what they do, what their own favourite drams are and just where they see Irish whiskey in ten or even twenty years’ time. As usual, they will be open to questions from our expert audience and there are bound to be a lot of laughs on the evening. There will also be food provided, courtesy of Dingle Crystal. We may also be fortunate enough to witness Crystal Master Craftsman, Sean Daly demonstrate just how he produces those beautiful Dingle Crystal whiskey glasses. A bus will pick up attendees at John Benny's pub, Strand Street. Cost: Members €20, Non Members €25. No cash accepted on the night Book online at www.irishwhiskeysociety.com

Ba chóir iarratais a dhéanamh ar líne trí www.opw.ie Táimid ag druidim le deireadh an tséasúir 2018 anso sa Mhúsaem, agus beidh an Caifé ag dúnadh tar éis lóin ar an Satharn, 6ú Deireadh Fómhair ag 13.00. Ach roimhe sin beidh ócáid an-spreagúil againn. Cuireann sé áthas an domhain orainn a fhógairt go mbeidh iarsma an-eisceachtúil ar taispeánt anso ar feadh dhá lá ar leith, le tacaíocht ón Roinn Cultúir, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta, faoin Scéim um Inaistritheacht na mBailiúchán. Beidh an t-iarsma ar taispeánt Dé hAoine 5ú Deireadh Fómhair óna 10.00 – 17.00, agus arís ar an Satharn an 6ú óna 10.00 – 13.00. Tapaidh do dheis! Tá seans ann leis gurb é seo an deis dheireanach a bheidh agat cuairt a thabhairt ar an dtaispeántas buan sa Mhúsaem, taispeántas atá againn ó 2001. Beidh taispeántas buan nua á chur isteach againn i rith an gheimhridh le comhoibriú ón gcomhlacht dearaidh New Graphic, agus le maoiniú arís ón Roinn Cultúir, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta, maoiniú a ceadaíodh dúinn i 2017 faoi Scéim Chaipitil na nEalaíon agus Cultúr. Ár mbuíochas libh ar fad as bhur gcuid tacaíochta i rith an tsamhraidh, agus tá súil againn sibh a fheiscint arís ag an dtaispeántas ar leith a mhairfidh dhá lá, agus arís nuair a osclófar ár dtaispeántas nua i 2019. Ach mar is gnáth, má theastaíonn uait dul i dteagmháil linn aon am i rith na bliana (seachas deireadh seachtainí), téir i dteagmháil linn tríd an rphost ag info@westkerrymuseum.com, nó glaoigh ar 066-9156333, chun coinne a dhéanamh. We are approaching the end of our 2018 season in the museum, and will be closing the café after lunch on Saturday 6 October at 13.00. However, this year we will not be going out with a whimper, but rather with a very large flourish! We are delighted to announce that, with the help of funding from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, under the 2018 Mobility of Collections Scheme, we will have a very special item on display for two days only! The object will only be here from 10.00 – 17.00 on Friday 5 October, and again on Saturday 6 from 10.00 – 13.00, so please do call. This may also be your final opportunity to visit the current permanent exhibition in the museum, which has been with us since 2001. Thanks to funding again from what is now the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, allocated in 2017 under the Arts and Culture Capital Scheme, we will be installing a new permanent exhibition over the winter months, working with New Graphic design company. Thank you for your support throughout the summer, and we look forward to seeing you for our special exhibition, or when our new exhibition goes on show in 2019. However, as always, should you wish to visit the museum at any time during the year (weekends excepted), please contact us by email at info@westkerrymuseum.com, or ring 066-9156333, to make an appointment.

TASTE TRAIL BOOKS & TASTE TICKET SELLERS
VOLUNTEERS Anyone wanting to volunteer for the weekend or with any queries can email info@dinglefood.com
Tickets Only, No Cash! The main income to run the festival comes from the sale of taste trail ticket books. Despite the festival growing massively the sale of books has not. The reason for that is because festival goers are using cash instead of buying books. This year the committee has asked all taste trail businesses not to offer a cash option. The original aim of the festival was always for the trail to operate on tickets only so there was an income to actually run the festival. We are asking everyone this year, festival goers & businesses on the trail, to please support the tickets for the festival. A book of Taste Trail tickets contains 9 tickets, worth €2 each. The cost of the book is €20.00 with €2 going towards the successful running of the festival. We hope you agree €20 for what the festival offers all weekend is very very good value for money. They are available from the festival office during the weekend of the festival.

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Margaret Power A quiet regeneration in Golf There is evidence that Golf is changing – out with the Argyll jumper, Tartan pants (mostly) and the prohibitive entry fees. It needs to change as the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) estimates that since 2004, Golf Club membership has declined by more than 50,000 with 30 Clubs closing altogether. There are multiple reasons – reduced household income due to economic woes, less leisure time and frankly not helped by the aforementioned image which was portrayed. The Confederation is currently engaged in several initiatives to reverse the downward trend and to promote Golf as ‘a health-promoting hobby which can be engaged in by all’. Key to attracting more members is a fundamental shift in current thinking to address some of the barriers. Very attractive membership packages are now available – at levels which were unthinkable a few years ago, rules will be changed next year to speed the progress of play and more competitions over 9 holes rather than 18 will be held – again to provide the opportunity for those with time pressures

to play competitive golf. To most golfers, these changes will be welcomed as essential and progressive.
Ceann Sibéal and The Future While much of the national pattern since 2004 has also been experienced in Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal, our location on one of the World’s most scenic peninsulas with the consequent flow of visitors who want to play the course has sheltered us from the worst economic effects. We will continue to market the Club to visitors overseas and in Ireland as those Green Fees are a vital part of our revenue stream. In terms of our Membership, with the increased time pressures on the younger population, our average age is high, and we need to constantly recruit, particularly younger members to ensure a vibrant future. We have run the Get into Golf schemes promoted by the Confederation for the past two years – quite successfully with between 20 and 30 golfers joining during that period. The basics of the Get into Golf scheme include a series of coaching lessons, the opportunity to play golf with the support of members and a low-cost membership package which enables to ‘try golf’ for a period. The great majority of those who have participated in Get into Golf are local
and their feedback has been very positive. “We love it”, “the lessons from Cormac were brilliant” and “the members have been great” among the comments we have heard back. We are fortunate to have an excellent course where, apart from a few weeks in mid-Summer, there is no problem in getting out to play. We will again run the Get into Golf scheme for both Ladies and Men in 2019 with the objective of attracting even more golfers and with the continuing support of the Confederation, Ceann Sibéal will thrive.
The Wren’s Nest Closing After eight successful years The Wren’s Nest Coffee House and Garden will close for good after the Food Festival weekend. Someone needs to take a year or two, maybe three, to re-acquaint with the joys of free time on the peninsula! The Potter’s Book the new poetry collection by
Louis Mulcahy Launch by Professor Graham Allen Sunday, October 14th, 5:00pm Siamsa Tire, Town Park, Tralee www.doirepress.com doirepress@gmail.com
Louis Mulcahy who is widely known for his ceramic sculpture and pottery work has, over the past fifteen years, also been creating Poetry. So far three full collections of his work, one in Irish and two in English, have been published by An Sagart Publishing. At Siamsa Tire on Sunday 14th Oct., Professor Graham Allen, Department of English at UCC will be launching Louis Mulcahy's fourth collection on behalf of publishers Doire Press. Initial reaction from fellow poets who received advance copies of the book has been excellent. Louis Mulcahy’s new collection is an ambitious book, an examination in poetry of the processes of creative art by way of an exploration of his other life as a ceramicist. It goes much farther, however, than the autobiographical, interesting and all as that is. The international cultural contexts of ceramics – from Japan to England’s industrial potteries – as well as the down-anddirty elemental processes involved, are essential to the poems. Marital love and family, and an empathy with the physical and cultural landscape of the poet’s adoptive home in Corca Dhuibhne (to where the poet’s cremated ashes are to be borne in a “raku chalice” he has fired) , are also important elements in the clay of this “well wrought urn” by a master craftsman. - Paddy Bushe
Susan Hosts the Middle Floor! New Exhibition, Tuesday 25th Sept - Tuesday the 16th Oct On the last Tuesday of every month Susan will be hosting a private show on the middle floor at the Greenlane Gallery Dingle. These fun, casual private viewings, with drinks and canapés, will be by invite only where Susan will showcase our incredibly talented resident artists. Home to more than fifty sought after artists, the Greenlane Gallery is committed to working in partnership with our artists; to promote their work and our unique Irish arts culture. Susan kicked off with huge success last Tuesday evening hosting her first exhibition of this series by acclaimed local artist Michael Flaherty. Michael Flaherty’s Wild Atlantic Way exhibition titled ‘Cake in the Rain!’ captures the apocalyptic power of nature and emotional intensity true of the Wild Atlantic terrain. Born in Cloghane, Co. Kerry, Michael depicts scenes and objects which are familiar to him but that have been filtered through his imagination. In a highly personal style his paintings have a remarkably assured technique which is incredibly fresh and instant. His paintings are spontaneous, lyrical and instil a wondrous frenetic intensity. He is uninhibited in his use of paint, working in layers of thick, painterly impasto to the third dimensional, and his colours are bold, vibrant, daring and unconventional. Exhibition continues through the Dingle Food Festival until Tuesday the 16th of October. www.greenlanegallery.com

Rotator Cuff Tears Eddie O’Grady Your shoulder is made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus), your shoulder blade (scapula), and your collarbone (clavicle). The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint: the ball, or head, of your upper arm bone fits into a shallow socket in your shoulder blade. Your arm is kept in your shoulder socket by your rotator cuff. The rotator cuff consists of four muscles, the supraspinatus muscle, the infraspinatus muscle, the terres minor muscle, and the subscapularis muscle. These muscles attach the humerus to the shoulder blade and help lift and rotate your arm. There is also a lubricating sac called a bursa between the rotator cuff muscles and the bone on top of your shoulder (acromion). The bursa allows the rotator cuff tendons to glide freely when you move your arm. Sometimes it may become inflamed and painful due to overuse. Causes There are two main causes of rotator cuff injury and degeneration. Acute Tear If you fall down on your outstretched arm or lift something too heavy with a jerking motion, you can tear your rotator cuff at that moment. Degenerative Tear Many tears are the result of a wearing down of the tendon occurring slowly over time. Rotator cuff tears are more common in the dominant arm. Several factors contribute to degenerative, or chronic, rotator cuff tears. Repetitive stress. Repeating the same shoulder motions again and again can stress your rotator cuff muscles and tendons. Baseball, tennis, rowing, and weightlifting are examples of sports activities that can put you at risk for overuse tears. Many jobs and routine chores can cause overuse tears, as well. Lack of blood supply. As we get older, the blood supply to our rotator cuff tendons reduces. Without a good blood supply, the body's natural ability to repair tendon damage is impaired. This can ultimately lead to a tendon tear. Bone spurs. As we age, bone spurs (bone overgrowths) often develop on the underside of the acromion bone. When we lift our arms, the spurs rub on the rotator cuff tendon. This is part of a condition which comes under the general term of ''shoulder impingement''. Over time this can damage the tendon, making a tear more likely. The supraspinatus muscle is probably the more common of the rotator cuff muscles to get injured as we age. This is because the supraspinatus passes under the acromion process before attaching to the greater tubercle of the humerus. Poor posture. With poor posture over time the shoulders start to protrude forward making the subacromion space smaller and causing shoulder impingement, sometimes leading to rotator cuff muscle/tendon damage, especially
the supraspinatus muscle/tendon. Symptoms The most common symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include: Pain at rest and at night, particularly if lying on the affected shoulder Pain when lifting and lowering your arm or with specific movements Weakness when lifting or rotating your arm Tears that happen suddenly, such as from a fall, usually cause intense pain immediately. There may be a snapping sensation or feeling of something giving way, followed by immediate weakness/severe pain in moving your upper arm. Tears that develop slowly due to overuse also cause pain and arm weakness but the increase in pain intensity occurs over time. You may have pain in the shoulder when you lift your arm, or pain that moves down your arm. At first, the pain may be mild and only present when lifting your arm over your head, such as reaching into a cupboard. Over time, the pain may become more noticeable at rest, and no longer goes away with medications. You may have pain when you lie on the injured side at night. The pain and weakness in the shoulder may make routine activities such as combing your hair or reaching behind your back more difficult. There are different types of tears. Partial tear. This type of tear is also called an incomplete tear. It damages the tendon, but does not completely sever it. Full-thickness tear. This type of tear is also called a complete tear. It separates all of the tendon from the bone.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen reduce pain and swelling. Strengthening exercises and physical therapy. Specific exercises will restore movement and strengthen your shoulder. Your exercise program will include stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion. Strengthening the muscles that support your shoulder can relieve pain and prevent further injury. Cortisone steroid injection. This is not recommended with a muscle or tendon tear and can actually lead to more damage in the longterm. One exception would be in the case of a subacromial bursitis where it can be very effective in shrinking the bursa back to normal size and reducing the inflammation. Surgical Treatment Your doctor may recommend surgery if your pain does not improve with nonsurgical methods. Continued pain is the main indication for surgery. If you are very active and use your arms for overhead work or sports, your doctor may also suggest surgery. Other signs that surgery may be a good option for you include: Your symptoms have lasted 6 to 12 months You have a large tear You have significant weakness and loss of function in your shoulder Your tear was caused by a recent, acute injury Surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff most often involves re-attaching the tendon to the head of humerus (upper arm bone).
Imaging Tests Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or ultrasound are probably the best way to confirm tears, bursitis, tendinopathies or bone spurs in the rotator cuff area. Treatment If you have a partial rotator cuff tear and you keep using it despite increasing pain, you may cause further damage. A rotator cuff tear can get larger over time. Chronic shoulder and arm pain are good reasons to see your doctor. Early treatment can prevent your symptoms from getting worse. It will also get you back to your normal routine that much quicker.
Eddie O’Grady
The goal of any treatment is to reduce pain and restore function. There are several treatment options for a rotator cuff tear, and the best option is different for every person. In planning your treatment, your doctor will consider your age, activity level, general health, and the type of tear you have. Nonsurgical Treatment Nonsurgical treatment options may include: Rest. Your doctor may suggest rest and limiting overhead activities. He or she may also prescribe a sling to help protect your shoulder and keep it still. Activity modification. Avoid activities that cause shoulder pain.

The Flu Vaccine Question I’m thinking of getting the flu vaccine. Can you tell me about this vaccine? Answer Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you:

Congratulations to the Laune Rangers side on a well- deserved victory. Under 6's: Special thanks to Listry GAA for hosting our Under 6's on Friday evening last. There was good fun had by all and some great football played. Míle buíochas to all involved. The Milltown Castlemaine side formed a guard of honour for recently retired Kerry stalwart Donnacha Walsh as he entered the field of play on Saturday evening- to acknowledge his wonderful contribution to football, both at club and inter county level. For those on social media hoganstand.com shared a clip of this very thoughtful gesture. We wish Donnacha many more happy days of football with his club.

German Travel Press Visit The Reeks District For A Weekend Of Adventure A group of top German travel and lifestyle journalists visited the Reeks District last week. The writers, from a range of publications including Bild, GEO, Tagesspiegel, Berliner Kurier and Der Kulinariker followed a busy schedule that saw them scale Carrantuohill, cycle around and kayak on Caragh Lake, surf on Inch beach, take part in stand up paddle boarding on the River Laune, and ride horses along Rossbeigh Strand. While the region’s five guests worked hard, there was plenty of time to enjoy themselves. Staying in the Bianconi Inn and Kingston’s Townhouse in Killorglin, they got to dine on fine seafood at Jack’s Coastguard in Cromane, eat lakeside at Carrig Country House, sample fresh Cromane oysters with Glenbeigh Shellfish, and sample local beers and fusion tapas at Sol y Sombra in Killorglin. Other places visited included Foley’s Bar in Inch, Glencar Resort Hotel, Ard na Sidhe, Bunkers Bar & Restaurant and The Climbers Inn, Glencar. Before leaving the region, they were treated to a relaxing morning of Lomi massages and sound healing at Aloha House overlooking the River Laune. Reeks District chair Jens Bachem said: “Germany is a key market for tourism to Kerry thanks to both the new Ryanair Berlin route and existing Frankfurt Hahn service which both fly into Kerry airport. Our guests seemed enthralled with all the Reeks District has to offer, just a short flight from their home cities. Their coverage should help significantly increase visitor numbers to our region.”

The Blasket Islandman The Life and Legacy of Tomás Ó Criomhthain le
Gerald Hayes foilsithe ag
The Collins Press ‘Tomás Ó Criomhthain is a giant of Irish literature. His memoir An tOileánach (The Islandman) is a classic. But he was a highly unlikely author. He lived his entire life on the isolated and nowabandoned Great Blasket, in a house he built with his own hands using stones he found on the island. Likewise, he crafted a valuable literary heritage out of island life, bequeathing to us a captivating saga of a doomed folk culture. The Blasket Islandman tells the absorbing story of Tomás’ life, as well as describing the forces that influenced his work and detailing his impressive legacy. Tomás was determined that his community be remembered. In the process, he achieved a level of immortality for himself. More than eighty years after his passing, he remains the famed ‘Blasket Islandman’, the like of whom will never be again’ - Gerald Hayes An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979
