Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 30th October will be the crime drama American Animals. The film follows four bright and well-off college students in Kentucky who plot to steal some rare books from their university's Special Collections Library in a misguided quest for personal glory. Based on the story, the film includes interviews with the foursome who attempted the bizarre heist. Starring Barry Keoghan, Evan Peters, Blake Jenner, Jared Abrahamson and Ann Dowd. American Animals tangles with a number of weighty themes, but never at the expense of delivering a queasily compelling true crime thriller. The following week on Tuesday 6th November the feature will be Bohemian Rhapsody, a biographical film about the rock band Queen, focusing on lead singer Freddie Mercury's life and leading up to the band's Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium in 1985. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound and is a foot-stomping celebration of those times and a very unique and compelling frontman. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams PEIL. Good Luck to the Dingle Senior Football Team Members and their Mentors in the County Final against Dr Crokes in Tralee this weekend. What a great turnaround to their year from the early defeats in the County League and it shows how hard work on and off the field eventually pays dividends. I urge all able bodied people to head for Tralee on Sunday as this team really needs your support for the wonderful displays they have served up over the past few months. Come on Dingle!!!. MARITIME WEEKEND. The annual Maritime Weekend features a series of talks at The Aquarium on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of November this year. FOLK FESTIVAL. The 3rd Annual Folk Festival is scheduled for this Bank Holiday weekend with loads of music planned at various venues throughout town. The main Concert in St James Church on Saturday features Emma langford, Siomha, Bernie Phaid Dave Clancy and Riona with a limioted number of tickets still for sale through the fesrival website or facebook page. This was a badly needed filler for what was a quiet Bank Holiday for many years here in West Kerry. Enjoy. GOOD SERVICE. Comhgairdeas to Caroline Ni Sé the smiling face in Dingle Bay Hotel on your recent award in recognition of continuous good service to all the customers both visitors and locals who frequent the popular Strand Street establishment. Yes folks good service is so important and appreciated and ensures repeat business no matter what area of life one works in. FÉILE BIA. Well done to the Transition Corca Dhuibhne volunteers who manned the recycling and water rinsing stalls on the streets during the Féile Bia again this year. We hope that the general public will learn from and put into practice the correct recycling procedures for various everyday commodities which can lessen the huge amount of stuff unnecessarily going to landfill on a daily basis. Keep up the good work folks. SHOP LOCAL. Yes its that time of year again when the gift list is being prepared for the Season of Giving and Receiving as I heard it so nicely described on radio last week. Just to remind you readers that Shopping Local is so important to the entire community here in the Peninsula. The statistics show that every Euro spent in local outlets is helping to ensure the viabilty of the outlet or service in which it is spent and the continued employment of those lucky enough to have a place to work in West Kerry. And if the gift you seek is not immediately apparent vouchers are now regarded as one of the most acceptable presents in Ireland. And you could be saving your own, your families, relatives or neighbours jobs with your careful spend locally at any time of year. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Farming News

1. Use the driest/ most sheltered paddocks when grazing in very wet weather;

Nutrition and body condition critical for getting autumn-calving cows back in calf

2. Strip grazing should be used during to ensure minimal damage from poaching and to maximise grass utilisation (12 to 24 hr blocks); and

The calving season on approximately 20% of Irish suckler farms that operate an autumn-calving system has drawn to a close. Figures have pointed to a slight reduction in the number of calves registered to beef cows – suckler calvings in other words – during the month of August. However, the breeding season for autumn-calving suckler cows is currently underway on many farms across the country.

3. On/off grazing can be practised to reduce poaching damage and keep animals at grass for longer when weather gets wet (out by day- in by night... in November as conditions deteriorate).

It helps to have autumn-calving cows housed before breeding, as the change in diet and environment can cause stress and, therefore, have a negative effect on the cow. This system can be a little trickier than breeding in spring-calving herds. The biggest problem is anoestrus – the cow’s lack of ability to show signs of heat. While the majority of autumn-calving herds will use a stock bull when cows are outdoors, many farmers turn to AI as the animals are housed for the winter period.

It says to extend the grazing season by supplementing using concentrates if farm cover is low and to graze down to 4cm to ensure good quality grass next spring.

Like breeding in a spring-calving herd, high conception rates are achieved on the back of high heat detection rates. Some cows will not express heat as well when housed indoors. Cows that are allowed access to a yard or a straw-bedded area will show increased heat activity. Breaking the bond – for a few hours everyday – between the cow and the suckling calf can also enhance heat activity. Heat detection aids, such as tail painting, are very important in picking up cows in heat. Cows should be checked on multiple occasions throughout the day and cows showing heat should be recorded. Nutrition A lot of silage has been cut recently in an effort to fill the fodder gap on farms and the recent favourable weather conditions have allowed this. However, the main problem that this presents is that silage that was harvested in latter weeks will not be of the same quality as silage that was harvested in June or July – mainly due to shorter days and a lower sugar content. Therefore, there is a huge difference between feeding silage with a dry matter digestibility (DMD) of 72% compared to a silage DMD of 55-60%; so, knowing the value of baled silage – or silage in the pit – is extremely important. This can be done through silage testing. Where cows are in good condition and on high-quality grass silage (75% DMD) ad-lib, there is no need to supplement these animals – if fodder supplies are adequate. Farmers could add concentrates and reduce the silage in order to stretch fodder. As silage quality deteriorates, more concentrate should be introduced as required. For example, cows receiving 70% DMD silage should be supplemented with 2kg of concentrate. Where cows are in poor condition, concentrate levels will have to be maintained following mating. Feeding should continue at this level for approximately 30 days after the end of the breeding season. The quantity of concentrates offered to cows can also be adjusted post-mating, depending on silage quality. Indoor Breeding While some farmers have never had any problem with the stock bull serving cows on slats, other farmers have had some problems. Breeding indoors can be very dangerous. It is not uncommon to see both bulls and cows slipping on slats and becoming lame. Younger bulls are especially at risk, as they may have been born and bred in sheds with solid, bedded floors. Allowing the stock bull to become familiar with slats can reduce the risk of injury. Rubber slat mats can increase grip for both the bull and cow when mounting is taking place. The bull should also be in good body condition, well-rested and free from injury. Lameness will reduce the mobility of the bull and his ability to serve cows. Keeping a close eye on the bull when mounting cows allows the farmer to monitor the situation. 3 tips to manage grass in difficult weather The autumn has been very kind in terms of growth rate and ground conditions. Grass utilisation has been excellent this autumn. Here are a few tips to continue utilising grass, even if the weather turns wet, from Teagasc. 12 West Kerry Live

It also recommends that paddocks being grazed now should be closed off for the winter and should be grazed early next spring.

Graze Down Grass It is important to graze down to a residual of 4-4.5cm in the autumn to stimulate growth throughout the winter and avoid the carry-over of dead material over the winter into next spring. Dead material doesn’t grow grass! Difficult, heavy, later, poor infrastructure paddocks should be targeted to be grazed this week if not already grazed, it recommends, and while the weather forecast is good, these paddocks should be grazed in rotation with dry paddocks. Teagasc recommends farmers to aim to have 60pc of the farm closed by the first week in November (1-2 weeks earlier in wet/ late areas). It says to feed supplements if there is insufficient grass in the daily allocation and to skip heavier paddocks if necessary – and graze paddocks with ideal covers - to meet the 60pc target if necessary. The advice also says to plan to leave the grazing platform with adequate grass cover when the cows are housed (farm cover of 600kg DM/ha on December 1). Zwartble Sheep The Zwartbles is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the Friesland region of the north Netherlands. There it was primarily used for the production of sheep milk as well as lamb and mutton. They were often kept alongside dairy cattle herds. The Zwartbles has a striking appearance: a black/brown fleece, a white blaze on the face, 2 - 4 white socks, and a white tail tip (which is traditionally left undocked). Both rams and ewes are polled. The Zwartbles are relatively large sheep: ewes weigh an average of 85 kg (187 lb), and rams 100 kg (220 lb). The dense fleece ranges from black to brown with sun bleached tips, some silvering may be present in older animals. The wool is medium to fine with excellent crimp and fibre length, a Bradford count of 54-56 and a micron count of 27 making it popular for spinning and felting. Zwartbles are known for being docile, friendly, easy lambing, prolific, milky and being excellent mothers. Traditionally used for both milk and meat in the Netherlands, they declined significantly in use until listed as critically rare by the Dutch Rare Breed Survival trust in the mid-1970s. The first Zwartbles were imported to Ireland in the 1990’s and there is now a Zwarble Breed Society. They are now mainly used to produce breeding stock, meat and wool. Being from a cold, wet, windy area of the Netherlands, the breed has easily adapted to the our climate and can thrive at various altitudes. They are increasingly popular with both smallholders and commercial farmers. Zwartbles rams are also crossed with ewes of other breeds to produce butchers lambs. Lambs from these crosses are always black but sometimes will have a little white on the head. Zwartbles rams and ewes cross well with other breeds. The wool of these animals is often trimmed to remove the sunbleached (brown) wool tips to give them a tight black fleece. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We have established a Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) and all interested members of the public are most welcome to join this community to help support the transition to a low carbon society of the future. The initial stage is a Dingle Peninsula Energy Master Plan and last week we held a day long planning meeting with the consultants who will carry out this work. Over the coming months they will determine how much energy we are currently using and then provide an energy efficiency roadmap for the Peninsula. This work will allow us to identify suitable projects and ultimately avail of Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) community project funding which can provide significantly more support than if householders were to apply for upgrade grants individually. As a community we will need to support this work by providing information in relation to our current energy usage. We will advertise a survey for people to submit this information in the near future and would urge people to get involved to help build an accurate picture of the energy we use today. As I mentioned, part of this work also is to compile a register of opportunities for community projects. If you have an idea for an energy efficiency project in your area, please come talk to us about it so that we can include it in this plan.

The quest for the ESB Networks Dingle Project Ambassadors is well underway. Surveys have been sent to all potential Ambassadors and we have had a number of Information Sessions in Benner’s Hotel in Dingle. File and Polish Hand and Toes energy initiatives and investigate what is

involved in the transition to a low carbon society, the more it is becoming clear to us that people will need support. For example, if I want to upgrade my home in the morning there are many things I will need to know. What are the most suitable technologies for my home? What grants are available and what is the payback? Who are the installers and who will maintain the equipment? If I install an air source heat pump (ASHP), how do I use it most efficiently? We see this support being provided by independent Energy Coaches in the future and, with funding and support from Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB), we are planning to run a Local Training Initiative in 2019 to equip people with the necessary skills to be Energy Coaches. We will shortly be advertising for a coordinator and assistant coordinator for this course. The roles will be based in Dingle and will be for a duration of twelve months. We expect to advertise for places on this course in January.

Butternut Squash, Sausage, Ricotta and Honey Tart Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

200g fresh ricotta

Squash is so versatile, but this time of year look out for other types of squash and feel free to try this with pumpkins of any shape or size (there are so many types pumpkins and gourdes - they all look different and they each have a unique flavour). These flavours go so well together so don’t limit it to just a pie, this would work in a pasta, risotto or as a chunky soup.

rapeseed oil

The ricotta and honey will really work adding a little creaminess and sweetness. The ricotta I would recommend for this is made in Tralee by Massimiliano (Max) from Once Upon A Time Cheese. Ingredients For the dough 120g plain flour 80g wholemeal flour

1 tbsp. honey salt and pepper Method First make the dough by mixing the flours, butter and salt together. Once this resembles fine breadcrumbs add the water and bring this all together. Wrap it in cling film and allow it to rest for about 30 minutes or so. Once it has rested roll it out and place it on a baking tray. Preheat the oven to 190ºC For the topping Place a pan on over low heat, add a little oil then add the onion and fennel seeds and allow this to cook for a few minutes. Add the sausage meat, turn the heat up a little and cook the sausage for a minute or two. Add the squash and cook it for a few minutes to soften it.

150g butter cubed and cold

Add this mixture on top of the rolled out pastry. Scatter the ricotta over the top and then drizzle with a little honey. Season with salt and pepper.

pinch of salt

Place this in the oven for about 30 minutes. Enjoy!!!

120ml water For the topping ½ red onion, finely sliced ½ tsp. fennel seeds 8 sausages, skin peeled off and roughly chopped 1 squash, peeled and finely sliced

What’s Brewing in the Witches’ Kitchen? Irene Ní Fhlannúra Seasonal eating has become trendy again and may help remind us of a time when each Season dictated the menu of the day. Samhain which means “Summer’s End” celebrates the last harvest of the growing season and prepares us for the colder, darker days ahead. At this time of year, our ancestors took stock of what food was harvested, killed off any livestock deemed too weak or costly to survive the Winter and gathered any remaining crops or fallen fruit in the fields. It was considered taboo to eat anything left in the growing fields after the 31st of October, the festival of Samhain, and so was left to the Nature spirit and returned to the Earth. Between the slaughtered animals, the rotting crops and the tradition of remembering our dead, Samhain, had a deathly air about it that is somewhat mirrored in the modern-day celebration of Halloween. It is a pity that many of our cultural and spiritual connections with the Seasons and the land have been hijacked by consumerism and retail vulgarity, because much of what our ancestors did at this time of year prepared them for the long, dark Winter that lied ahead. Despite the progression of time, health risks associated with Winter now were present back in the old days – colds, flus, tummy bugs, sadness and loneliness, but traditions and timely preparations of seasonal ingredients meant that communities then shared food and company which saw them through until the Spring. Samhain is the half way mark between the Autumn equinox and the Winter Solstice. Although it was the end of the growing season, there were still many foods left to be enjoyed throughout the Winter. Traditional foods include nuts (hazels and chestnuts), apples, berries, potatoes, dark bread (rye), barley, cabbage, root vegetables, sea vegetables and a good selection of dried herbs - rosemary, mugworth, mullein, sage, bay and many others that were used in food and as medicines for the Winter season. The livestock that was slaughtered around Samhain, was respectfully prepared, dried or cured without any waste, to last throughout the season. Depending on where you lived and if you had land, game and fish were also on the menu and came in handy when meat supplies became scarce. The tradition and lore surrounding these foods are deeply rooted in the rituals and remedies of the season, many of which helped to keep us connected with the land and each other for the good of our health and well-being. Rosemary has long been associated with remembrance throughout the World. Ancient Greek and Roman scholars wore garlands of rosemary while studying as they knew it would help them remember and recall their studies. More recently, studies concluded that students who worked in a room with the aroma of rosemary oil achieved 30% greater results in memory tests. It is also the symbol of remembrance of our loved ones. At Samhain, people hung a bunch of rosemary over the doorway in memory of their loved ones who had passed away. Many of the traditions associated with death during Samhain helped to process grief and reassure those left behind to let go of negative emotions. Apples had a central role on the Samhain table as they stored well and were still plentiful. Before they were ever slathered in toffee and sprinkles, apples were split in two and the formation of the seeds inside represented the five elements of life in Pagan times – Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether (Spirit), their position and presence bore significance, sometimes good, sometimes not so good, for the one who split the apple. Bobbing for apples and swinging the apple from a string are well-known Samhain games that are still with us today. As Samhain marked the end of the year, many rituals looked forward to the coming year and what fortune lay ahead, usually in love or in prosperity. One such ritual was to peel the apple, making one long piece from its skin. When it eventually breaks off, leave to drop on the ground. The letter it most resembles when it falls is likely to mark the initial of a future husband/wife – who needs Tinder when Granny Smith is around! At Samhain, it is believed that the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is at its thinnest. It is the best time to summon our ancestral spirits for advice and good news of the year ahead while warding off the evil ones with scary masks and Jack o’Lanterns. Turnips and mangles featured long before the pumpkin but again, some of todays spooky faces hark 20 West Kerry Live

back to when these tough vegetables were carved, lit and placed on a window sill to ward off any dodgy or unwelcome spirits at Samhain. When Celtic pagans migrated to the US, they brought this tradition with them and were delighted to discover the pumpkin, which were in Season at Samhain and much easier to carve! Báirín Breac (Barm Brack), another great fortune telling food item for the Samhain table. The fruit speckled loaf contained many prophecies of the year ahead: The Pea: You won’t be getting married this year, oh well! The Bean: You will be prosperous and fortunate and full of beans! The Stick: You will have an unhappy marriage, possibly involving a stick! The Rag: You will be poverty-stricken and destitute! The Coin: You will be wealthy and rich – beware of the one who got the Rag The Ring: You will be wed this year and live happily ever after, unless you get the stick next year! Milltown Castlemaine GAA Under 16-Mid Kerry: Hard luck to our Under 16’s who were beaten by Keel Listry on Sunday afternoon last –in the above competition. They say goals win games and there was no shortage of same in this encounter. Keel Listry slotted in 5 and Milltown Castlemaine had 2 of their own. Were it not for a man of the match performance by M/C keeper, Jack Griffin, who pulled off some magnificent saves, the number could have been much higher. Shane O’ Connor, Jack Teahan, Evan O’ Sullivan and Cathal Daly commanded a great full back line with Pat O’ Sullivan, Oisin O’ Connor and Anthony Kelliher ably assisting in the half backs.

Cillian Burke and Seamus Nagle showed plenty of skill at centre field with some excellent fielding. Our half forwards Liam Roche, Conor Spillane and Anthony Barrett combined well along with their inside forwards- Tom Keane, Cathal Barrett and Brendan Casey, setting up and converting some fantastic scores. Well done to Keel Listry on an excellent performance and to Milltown Castlemaine –who despite being a very young side- put in a super effort and never gave up. Best wishes to Adam Lenihan from Milltown Castlemaine for a speedy recovery from his recent injury. Special thanks to Mike Burke and David Heasman for all their work with this group of players. Fundraising Lotto Jackpot Draw: Our jackpot now stands at €5,400 with €250 on offer for a match 3. UNDER-16s: Mid Kerry U16 championship (round 4):

Cromane ended 2018 on a high with a two-point win on Sunday over neighbours Glenbeigh-Glencar in the Mid Kerry O’Sullivan Cup final in Killorglin.

Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane 2-09

Next weeks Jackpot is €10,000. If youre not in, you cant win. Cromane GAA

It was well-deserved as they dominated a second half at one stage opening up a four-point lead, 0-15 to 1-8 with 12 minutes left. Things got a bit nervy towards the end with referee Maurice Murphy playing over six minutes of injury time but the lads got the job done in the end. Apart from a poor patch of play in the middle of the first half when Glenbeigh-Glencar hit six points in a row they controlled matter and could have passed the 20-point mark but for some wayward second half shooting. Cromane started the game very well and led by 0-4 to 0-1 after eight minutes with points from Darren Houlihan (two long distance frees) and two from play courtesy of Sean O’Sullivan and Mikey Houlihan. Glenbeigh-Glencar settled and hit that purple patch reeling off six points in a row between the 10th and 18th minutes to power ahead, 0-4 to 0-7. Cromane rediscovered their mojo and proceeded to hit four unanswered points of their own (all from play): Sean O’Sullivan (with two), Shane O’Neill and Darren Houlihan the scorers. This seemed to have settled them but then they were hit with a sucker punch just before the break with a high ball into the Cromane square was punched to the net by GlenbeighGlencar’s Kieran Cahillane to give our opponents the lead once again, 0-8 to 1-7. A late first-half free from Darren Houlihan (his fourth point of the half) left us one adrift at the break, 0-9 to 1-7. Glenbeigh-Glencar midfielder Colin McGillycuddy started the ball rolling in the second half with an outstanding point from wide on the left, off his left. However, this was to be Glenbeigh-Glencar’s last score for 20 minutes as our lads knuckled down and started to play their best football: quick and simple football. Between the 34th and 48th minutes, they rattled off six unanswered points in a period of play that ultimately won the game for Cromane. Scores came from Donnchadh Walsh, Danny O'Shea to level matters (0-11 to 1-8), three Sean O'Sullivan frees (one a mighty score from the sideline off his left boot), and a fine Liam Teahan effort to leave us ahead, 0-15 to 1-8 entering the last quarter. Glenbeigh-Glencar stopped the onslaught with a Kieran Courtney point before our captain John Michael Foley pulled off a great save to deny the same player moments later. While we were getting our act together in the forward line it was our backs who dominated their men in the opening 20 minutes of the second half: John Michael led the way, with Conor Sugrue, Brendan Foley, Cathal Crosby, Ethan Griffin, and Liam Teahan following his example. Goalkeeper Paudie McMahon was also assured under some testing high balls when he was needed. A Mikey Houlihan point in the 56th minute reopened our four-point cushion, 0-16 to 1-9, but Glenbeigh-Glencar to their credit finished strongly with three unanswered points to leave us in squeaky bum time as the referee added on those six minutes. In the sixth of those Sean O’Sullivan tapped over a free (his 7th point) of the day and moments later the final whistle blew on a fine win. After the match, our winning captain John Michael Foley accepted the O’Sullivan Cup while the man-of-the-match 34 West Kerry Live

Castlegregory Octoberfest Castlegregory Community Council

The global running movement, Run in the Dark, comes to Kerry on 7th November for its first year. Participants can join the 5k run taking them along Inch Beach in a unique night running experience, led by local man Mike O’Shea. Run in the Dark is the main fundraiser of the Mark Pollock Trust, which is named after blind Irish adventure athlete Mark Pollock. Mark Pollock suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury in 2010 when he fell from a second-storey window, which left him paralysed. Prior to the accident, Mark had competed in ultra-endurance races across deserts, mountains, and the polar ice caps and was the first blind person to race to the South Pole. The first Run in the Dark took place in Trinity College Dublin in 2011 to support Mark while he was still in hospital. Powered by Mark’s friends and the Irish expat community, the event quickly spread beyond Ireland to all corners of the world, with runs taking place in Edmonton, New York, Luxembourg, Sydney, and Singapore, all in support of the Mark Pollock Trust. In the past year, fuelled by Run in the Dark, the Mark Pollock Trust has secured two new sets of Ekso Bionics robotic legs worth more than $400,000. Both exoskeletons are used as research devices in Irish universities in studies with paralysed people. Commenting on his quest to cure paralysis Mark Pollock said: “We believe we can cure paralysis in our lifetime. And, right now, we are at an exciting inflection point with the research. Breakthrough therapies have been discovered and some will be made available to paralysed people within the next 10 years, if we support our collaborators to navigate a pathway from scientific breakthrough, to regulatory approval and commercialisation. By making these therapies available, we will change the lives of up to 500,000 people worldwide who suffer the injury each year.” Mike O’Shea, organiser of Run in the Dark Kerry said: “We are delighted to bring Run in the Dark to Kerry. Run in the Dark is one of the highlights of the running calendar in Kerry, not just because of the unique experience, but also due to the important cause powering the event. Every run entry, every donation, every step moves us towards a cure for paralysis and enabling people to walk again.” Sign up to Run in the Dark Kerry on 7thNovember at 8 pm at https:// www.runinthedark.org/kerry/

This past Saturday , 20th October, Neighbours Helping Neighbours in conjunction with the Castlegregory Community Council hosted a fundraiser with a great deal of success. Neighbours across the Dingle Peninsula came to Castlegregory Village for a fun filled evening of musical competitions and German food and the craic was flowing alongside the German Beers. The open mic competition included The Foxtales, Mario Mannering, Barry G and Fionn Lavery. All four musical acts were well received and managed to bring in €500 for charity; €350 for the “Dogs for the disabled” and €150 for Kiliney church renovation fund. Camps Mario Mannering took the Grand Prize while The Foxtales and Barry G ran neck-and –neck as finalists and Fionn Lavery came in as runner-up with just a few votes behind. Congratulations to all the musical groups for a highly successful night. Local publicans have taken note of your dedication to the event, your hard work for that evening and the array of musical talent you brought to our community. You can bet all four of your groups will reap the rewards for helping us out We would also like to thank 16 year old Rachel O’Connor, her assistance dog Justin and Rachels mother Eileen for coming as our special guests from Listowel. Everyone present found it a sincere pleasure to meet you and your mother. No doubts your dog Justin became the sweetheart of the village that musical evening. You are excellent representatives for the nonprofit “Dogs for the Disabled”. Keep up the great work and best of luck in the future to Rachel and Justin. We hope to welcome you back to our community soon. Everyone please keep a look out for the large purple bucket for the” Dogs for the Disabled”as it will be floating around the village seeking donations until the New Year. As a unique charity providing assistance dogs free of charge for the mobility challenged, they depend on private donations and support-they receive no Government Funding. Thanks to our neighbours and to our volunteers for helping to make Saturday’s fundraiser such a marvelous night of entertainment for the Peninsula. Happy Samhain!

Adrian's Second Chance

ber of articles over the years describing living and coping with a brain injury. Now, Adrian has penned his remarkable story in full.

"The doctors told my family members and friends that if I survived, I would probably never walk or talk again!" In 2004, 28-year-old Castlegregory native Adrian O'Connor suffered a traumatic brain injury while attending a friend's wedding in London. Despite the harrowing prognosis, Adrian confounded the experts by regaining not only the ability to walk, but also to run and not only to run, but to run marathons. The aftereffects of Acquired Brain Injury can be extremely difficult to predict even for the most experienced medical professional. For Adrian, this most certainly proved to be the case when it came to his propensity for discourse. For two years, Adrian said nothing, then in 2006, a referee's dubious decision at a local GAA match reopened the verbal floodgates and he hasn't stopped talking since. Adrian had never written for a public audience before but he felt compelled to share his story of hope with anyone who would listen. The West& Mid Kerry Live Magazine provided this opportunity and Adrian has submitted a num-

'Christy's Comeback' chronicles the life of a sports-mad young man growing up in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. It highlights the antics of his early years (mostly of courting and football), his university days (more courting and football) and his travels abroad (yes, you've guessed it!)

Fáilte roimh chách

Back home in his beloved County Kerry, Adrian embarked on his long relentless road to recovery, inspiring all of us who know him and amazing all of those he meets. This is a story of stamina and stubbornness; it is a tale of tenacity and tolerance, of failure and success. It is an autobiographical account of bloody-minded determination and a narrative of hope, belief and positivity. 'Christy's Comeback ' is the story of Corca Dhuibhne's own Laoch Léimneach.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults up to the age of 24 who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. Recently in Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory seven students and their teacher Miss Sallyann Leahy came together to cut 8 inches off their own hair for the Trust. It wasn't easy for some of these girls to do such a selfless act but they know the end result will be such a delight for those who have lost their hair. Each student has a sponsorship card and all monies raised will go to the Irish Cancer Society and Kerry Hospice. Thank you to all those who have supported the students so far.

& Much More......

Miss Leahy would also like to thank Cathriona Rohan for organising the hair cutting. Finally a special thank you to Caitlin Smith, Chloe Fitzgerald, Saoirse Harrington, Abby O'Sullivan, Lucy O'Mahony, Shauna Buckley and Una Fitpatrick for doing this very kind gesture.

Irish Whiskey and Dingle

member from last November’s “Elements of Taste” food and whiskey pairing, will give us a guided tour of whiskey cocktails through the centuries.

Peter White

From ages-old milk punch to his own modern twist on traditional favourites, we will taste an international selection of whiskey on their own and then shaken, stirred, or poured-over various ingredients to see how they complement the flavours of each whiskey.

Friday, October 12 saw ambassadors or representatives from six of Ireland’s very best distilleries visit Dingle to present not their own but each other’s wares blind. It is very difficult to get ambassadors from so many different distilleries to visit one place at the same time, especially Dingle given its remote location but such is the reputation of the town and its bars that these guys made the journey for the second time in two years. A hearty welcome was extended by the Daly family at their crystal workshop in Ballinaboola and they laid on some terrific food on the night prepared by Nicky Foley. Several society members travelled from all parts of the country to attend. The whiskeys represented were Echlinville, Midleton, Walsh, Dingle, Powers and Beam/Suntory with the new Irish Whiskey Society Teeling presented by Inch’s own Con Collins. This tasting was probably the most successful and enjoyable tasting ever held in Dingle and the Irish Whiskey Society Dingle chapter are pleased to announce that there will be a third incarnation of this tasting late in 2019. We hope to have 10 ambassadors present to us on the evening. We would also like to thank all of the ambassadors, attendees, Finn MacDonnell and the Daly’s for making the evening such a great success. Irish Whiskey Awards 2018 The 2018 Irish Whiskey Awards were held in Slane Castle & Distillery on Thursday, October 18, and Dingle again proved more than a match for its rivals around the country. Dick Macks pub won Munster and overall Irish Whiskey Bar of the Year whilst John Benny's pub won a gold medal on the night. Dingle Distillery won Best New Irish Whiskey with its Batch 3 Single Malt and Best Gin for the second year running and a gold medal for Dingle Vodka. Walsh distillery in Carlow won Best Single Cask whiskey for its Irishman Founders Reserve Caribbean Cask finish whilst Echlinville distillery won a slew of awards for its Dunvilles whiskey and Bán Poitin. Overall Irish Whiskey of 2018 is Redbreast 12 Cask Strength. Next IWS Dingle Tasting Many whiskey aficionados look down their noses at the concept of whiskey cocktails; seeing them as some form of stew as opposed to the fine cut of fillet that a dram can be. Well, we all know the difference between a stew of scraps and one made by adept hands using only the finest ingredients. The better the components, the better the stew. And we’ll use some of the best. Chef Trevis L Gleason, who many will re42 West Kerry Live

We’ll talk cocktail equipment, terminology, and appropriate glassware. It’ll be the perfect way to spend a long, winter’s night and we look forward to doing so in the company of old friends and new. We are proud to announce that this tasting will take place in John Bennys pub which has just won a gold medal in the 2018 Munster Section of the Irish Whiskey Awards. When: Friday November 2 2018 at 8pm.

Where: John Bennys pub, Strand Street, Dingle N.B: No cash accepted on the door on the night. Book online at www.irishwhiskeysociety.com

Back Pain Treatment Eddie O’Grady I would estimate that over 90 per cent of back pain can be resolved without surgery if a patient puts in the work. A lot of back pain is either muscular or an issue involving a facet joint locking up. Both these types of back pain are generally easy to treat and can be resolved quickly by a combination of massage, stretching and facet joint manipulation. The more tricky situation is where there is disc damage involved. This could be where a disc is bulging against a nerve(sending pain down the leg) or where the whole disc structure is collapsing. Treating disc issues may involve a combination of medication along with massage, facet joint manipulation, prescribed stretching and strengthening work. What you are basically trying to do is to relax down any spasm, release any locked up joints, reduce pain, get somebody moving again, and get a client to increase their core strength, all with the purpose of taking the pressure off the damaged disc, in the hope that the pain will then settle. Often I will work with a doctor because medication(muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories)can be as helpful as physio treatment. I try and get a client off medication as soon as possible and only use it in more serious cases. An MRI may be needed if the condition is ongoing or surfaces regularly(every couple of months). You can have disc damage without pain, or you can have damage which can be relieved ,supported and protected by strengthening exercises. You need to look at MRI results in the context of the severity of the injury presenting. Often with MRI results the physio treatment/exercises etc. are the same. I do find however that the results may focus the client on doing something proactive about their injury, and save them traveling to multiple practitioners spending a lot of money on various treatments. Movement is so important in the healing of many injuries. The only long term non-surgical

fix for discogenic back pain is trying to gently improve on flexibility, strength and fitness. Exercises should be prescribed only by a practitioner experienced in the treatment of discogenic disorders, because progression needs to be very graded and certain exercises need to be avoided. Often with disc disorders a client will have to go through a little bit of discomfort in order to build flexibility, along with core fitness and strength and hopefully come out the other side feeling better. It is not about endless treatment sessions but more about the client sticking religiously to their rehab program under guidance. Physio should be viewed more as assisting recovery and empowering a person to recover. With strengthening work you are trying to strengthen the support structures(muscles) of the spine, in order to take pressure off the discs. Think of it like the ropes pinning a tent to the ground, the stronger the ropes and the more of them, the better the tent stays up in the wind. Working on flexibility is like the steel rods they put in skyscrapers to allow some level of movement. If there were none and the building was too rigid, it would crack. Being overweight puts extra pressure on discs of the spine. If you think of a big belly, that is pulling sections of the spine (discs etc.) forward and out of place compromising their structure. Now you might be able to counteract this somewhat if you are extremely strong muscularly like say a strength athlete, but generally being overweight is not healthy for the spine. A overweight client may have to include weight loss in their rehab program.

mean that discs were quite unstable structures. Bringing somebody in for endless manipulations several times a week probably does more harm than good and may even cause more damage the disc over time, due to shearing of the disc. It does make a lot of money for that practitioner though. Generally to be effective you would loosen out all the muscles surrounding the area and do a once off manipulation, not manipulate over and over again. You may notice that many practitioners who manipulate your joints on a regular basis or for many treatment sessions, never do tissue work. Without deep tissue work and muscle tension release the joint often locks up again shortly after treatment. Hence your frequent revisits. I hope this article helps you understand discogenic back pain a little better and the best treatment options to seek.

Eddie O’Grady

Please let me make it clear that there is no such thing as ”putting in a disc” by manipulation. That is a complete myth. The click you hear during a manipulation(adjustment) is the facet joint opening, if locked. It is not the disc going back in. This manipulation(opening a locked facet joint) can in itself sometimes relieve pressure on the disc reducing pain, when done at the right time. This may be due to a post-manipulation freer movement in the area along Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) with reduction in spasm. If people could manually put discs back in on their spines there would be no need for surgery. Also it would

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Garry Partington RIP Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal has lost one of its outstanding members: following a period of illness, Garry Partington passed away on 19th October. Chairman of An Coiste Bainistíochta, Fionbarra Ó Cathail paid the following tribute to Garry. “It is with deep regret that we hear of Garry's passing yesterday. Garry was an outstanding contributor to Galf Chumann Cheann Sibéal over many years and in many different roles. Over the past year and despite his illness, he took on the role of Captain of the Mens Seniors and took an active part as a member of the Course Development Committee. As always, he played his part with integrity and enthusiasm. The Club will miss his massive contribution. He was also a very popular figure with those who had the pleasure of working or playing with him. On behalf of all our members and staff, I want to extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, Edel, his daughters Sarah and Amy and to all his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.” Garry’s catalogue of the Flora and Fauna of Ceann Sibéal. As Fionbarra mentioned, Garry made a huge contribution to Ceann Sibéal and some years ago, partly as a re-action to claims that Golf Courses and Golf Course maintenance were having a damaging effect on the environment, Garry took the time to list the abundance of Flora and Fauna to be found in Ceann Sibéal. This is highly topical currently in Golf circles

and Garry’s article below is as relevant as ever. The Flora and Fauna of Galf Chumann Cheann Sibéal Golf courses are often criticised by environmental groups for causing loss of biodiversity, especially in the local flora. This is put down to widespread use of pesticides, fungicides, weedkillers and fertiliser, and the promotion of grass monocultures, all of which will certainly reduce the nos. of species of flowers and of insects and larger the larger animals that feed on them. However, Ceann Sibéal can reliably claim that this is NOT the case on our course, and probably quite the reverse. Although we have about 120 acres of land only about 18 acres of this is cut and even less receives any application of weedkiller. Fungicides, pesticides and fertiliser are only really used on the greens – a tiny area. Before the course was developed the land was farmland – grazed by sheep (mostly) and cattle, and if the course were to close it would undoubtedly return to farmland. Farming of course means intensive use of fertiliser and other chemicals, and results in serious loss of biodiversity. Over three years around 1990 I identified a total of 108 wild plant species growing inside our boundaries, and I list them below. I used the Collins paperback “Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe”, second edition. Many of the flowers themselves are quite small, and not always easy to spot.

Movie Review A Star Is Born Pierce Hoare A Star Is Born (Directed by Bradley Cooper) is a 2018 remake of the 1976 film of the same name (which in turn is also a remake of the 1937 version). The movie the the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper (American Sniper, Guardians of the Galaxy), who also stars in the film. Lady Gaga (Toxic, Poker Face) is also in the film as one of the two leads alongside Bradley Cooper. The acting in A Star Is Born is phenomenal, with Bradley Cooper showing off his amazing range, reminding us he can do more than voice a talking racoon. Lady Gaga is also good in the film but her musical scenes far outshine the rest of her performance. While the songs in the film are not the sort I would normally listen to, those I’ve spoken to who do like the type of music say it was amazing, with the duets being a definite highlight, so if you like country/pop songs I would recommend the film. As for the plot of the movie, which revolves around the relationship between the two leads, I would say it starts off a bit weak but improves slowly as the film progresses. If you are a fan of romance movies, or a fan of any of the previous versions of this film I would recommend going to see it.

In Fighting for the Cause well-known Kerry historian Dr Tim Horgan tells the stories of some of the Kingdom’s extraordinary men and women who fought for an Irish Republic. They include the Fenian Jerry O’Sullivan, who blew up a wall of Clerkenwell prison in 1867 in an attempt to free two prisoners; Bridget Gleeson and Nora Brosnan, who were both incarcerated for their Republican activities; John Cronin, whose attacks on the British forces in 1920 were so audacious that he was considered a maverick by his own brigade commanders; Pat Allman, who was hidden above the Gap of Dunloe to recover from bullet wounds sustained in a fight with Free State forces; Paddy Landers, who spent nine months in Limerick Gaol, from where he would attempt to broker peace during the Civil War; and David Fleming, whose sustained hunger strikes in the 1940s would destroy his health and lead to long-term psychological trauma. Each of the people profiled in this book suffered for ‘the Cause’ but none faltered in what they considered to be their duty to Ireland;’ - Mercier Press
