Dingle Literary Festival Launch Programme of Live Events Dingle Lit 19th – 21st November Dingle Lit’s rise in the literary calendar continues unabated as they launch their programme of events for 19th – 21st November 2021. Writers and eager literary enthusiasts will flock to the Dingle Peninsula for the most welcome return to the traditional festival format to celebrate writing in all its glorious formats. Building on the success of the 2020 festival, this year Dingle Lit brings a hybrid programme of events, broadcasting live from the stunning Díseart to include literary chats from world-class writers. Dingle Lit are most honoured to welcome President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins to Corca Dhuibhne. A passionate political voice, academic and human rights advocate, he is also champion of creativity within Irish society, a writer and a poet. The President comes to Dingle to discuss his most recent publication ‘Reclaiming the European Street’. In his collection of speeches on European themes, he points to a weakening of solidarity and rising inequalities and highlights the need to learn lessons from the past. In a further literary coup, Claire Keegan will discuss her eagerly anticipated new novel ‘Small Things Like These’. Described as ‘delicately wrought’, her wintery parable tells the story of a simple act of courage and tenderness, in the face of conformity, fear and judgement. Her previous award-winning collections received critical acclaim and her new novel with its sheer storytelling brilliance confirms her as one of Ireland’s great writers. Author and historian, Diarmaid Ferriter will discuss his new book ‘Between Two Hells’, a fascinating exploration of the Civil War and its impact upon Ireland and Irish politics in the following half-century. Singer songwriter Declan O’Rourke will chat about his debut novel The Pawnbroker’s Reward, while the short story will be celebrated with Nicole Flattery, John Patrick McHugh, Éilis Ní Dhuibhne and Evelyn Conlon. Events with Carlo Gebler and Catherine Merrigan will further add to the riches. Irish language events are aplenty with Declan Kiberd, Alex Hijmans and Victor Bayda, as well as a sprinkling of magical storytelling events for children. From further lands and building on the success of the 2020 online festival, Dingle Lit brings writers to readers in their own homes to share stories from Carol Drinkwater, Emma Dabiri, Colm Tobin, Kevin Barry and Paul Muldoon.

Some Food for Thought for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

study of carotenoids in breast cancer, researchers found that those who had higher blood serum levels of carotenoids had a significant lower risk of developing BC. It is thought that carotenoids play a role in identifying cancer cells, apoptosis and protecting breast tissue from free radical damage – all of which will lower your risk. Interestingly, in the same study, they saw no benefit to women who were overweight or smokers and concluded their efforts would be better served in losing weight and giving up the fags. Being overweight is a major risk factor for developing BC, even just gaining 10% more body fat in adulthood increases your risk. However, eating more fruit and vegetables can help lose weight, so, adding in about three cupfuls of colouful plant-based foods to your daily diet is not a bad idea. Dietary Fats

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Irish Cancer Society have gone all out with their latest campaign “Care for your Pair” featuring prominently in the media since the beginning of the month. One in seven women in Ireland will develop Breast Cancer during their lifetime, with risk rising after the age of 50 years. Men too, although much rarer, can also develop Breast Cancer with 37 men diagnosed every year. There are over 2,500 Irish women currently living with breast cancer and although survival rates are improving, the incidence of this cancer in both women and men has increased at an alarming rate in the last four decades in all Western, developed countries, and now in some developing countries too. All public campaigns raising awareness and highlighting the signs, symptoms and risk factors are most definitely welcome but continue to fall short on delivering hard-hitting data about the role of diet, personal care, environment and lifestyle to have any meaningful impact on reducing the prevalence of this disease. Like all cancers, breast cancer (BC) is complex and there is not a fix-all solution in either the medical or non-medical field of therapy. However, there is plenty of evidence that food can play a huge role in the prevention of BC and here are some of the most researched foods out there that you can easily add to your menu: Cruciferous Vegetables Cruciferous vegetables are a special group of vegetables named for their cross-shaped flower petals, including cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, pak choi, rocket and kale (to name a few common ones). Unique to this group of veggies are glucosinolates, which studies indicate play a role in the metabolism (breakdown) of oestrogen in the body. Their protective role may also be found in the type of fibre that binds to and aids the elimination of oestrogens including “foreign” or xenoestrogens which we are exposed to through plastics, personal care products, pesticides and tap water. These vegetables are easy to cook and are available in some shape or form all year round. Eating one or two portions daily will not only reduce your risk of BC but your overall risk of all cancer in the long run. Flaxseeds Flaxseeds (or linseeds) have the highest concentration of a phytoestrogen (phyto=plant) called lignans. In postmenopausal women, lignans can cause the body to produce less active forms of oestrogen. This is believed to potentially reduce breast cancer risk. There is evidence that adding ground flaxseeds into the diet decreases cell growth in breast tissue as well. Again, this would be the type of change that would be expected to decrease breast cancer risk. Furthermore, researchers have also found other types of phytoestrogens in flaxseed that promote programmed cell death, apoptosis – basically, when cancer cells pop their clogs and die. Another good reason to add 1-2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed to your porridge, fruit or salad every day. Carotenoids Carotenoids are found in the colourful pigment of several fruit and vegetables, particularly yellow, orange, red and green produce. In a major 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The type of fat found in dairy products, fatty meats, poultry skin, margarines and hydrogenated oils are off the menu and instead, replaced with the good stuff found in oily fish, olives, avocados, nuts and seeds if you want to make a difference to your BC risk. The type of fats consumed play a more significant role in protection than the quantity of fats consumed in the diet, so don’t hold back on these helpful fats. The typical Mediterranean diet which has a high ratio of fat (healthy fats) is known to reduce risk of BC while increasing longevity and wellness throughout the whole of life. Incorporate some sunny recipes to your menu using olive oil instead of cheap, processed oils in your cooking and dressings. Nuts and seeds are a delicious addition to breakfast, snacks and salads and small oily fish (sardines, mackerel, herring, anchovies) can easily replace some of those meat-heavy dishes during the week. Soy Soy foods and not soy products is the key ingredient here. Whole soy foods, as eaten in the typical Asian diet, as soy beans, edamame, tofu, tempeh, miso and natto offer protection in a similar way to flaxseeds. The controversy around soy and breast cancer arose out of certain studies that examined soy isolates and concluded that too much of these soy products can increase oestrogen activity leading to an increased breast cancer risk. Like most things in nature, the less humans interfere the better. In a major Asian-American study, carried out over a longer period, women who reported soy intake at least once per week during adolescence showed a statistically significantly reduced risk of breast cancer later on in life. With a huge array of whole soy products available now, you can create your own breast-cancer-busting meal by adding soy to cruciferous and colourful vegetables, topped with some flaxseed, nuts and olives – go wild in the kitchen! These foods are a few of most widely researched foods in Breast Cancer nutrition. In a month that is all about raising awareness, adding them to your menu is another step in the right direction and easy to do. Switching over from a highly processed diet to a more natural, wholefood fare will allow these foods to reach their true potential and let them to get on with the job at hand – taking good care of your pair! Planning for Funeral Expenses

According to a recent article in The Irish Times, a funeral and associated costs, can amount to anything from €3,000 to €8,000, but it’s a subject that most of us would prefer to avoid and probably not even think about, until we have to. But planning ahead for your own funeral expenses, or for those of a loved one, can ease the burden at a time in the future when the last thing you, or your loved ones, want to think about is money. CCCD can help you to arrange and pre-pay these expenses in the form of a personal loan for funeral expenses for yourself, or in the case of a loved one, you may need a bridging loan to pay for the funeral, while you wait for the legal side of the deceased’s estate to be dealt with. Another facility offered by CCCD is the nomination of your savings, and providing for your dependants in the event of an unexpected death is something we should all consider. Credit union members are provided with a unique facility of nominating someone to receive their credit union funds in the event of their death. This is a valuable and free service. Your nomination is a legally binding, written instruction that tells the credit union what to do with your money after your death.

Vehicle Testing for all This is of benefit if the member diesLight without Commercial leaving a will as theVehicles funds left in the credit union will not have to pass through the, sometimes slow, process of intestacy. By choosing to set up a nominated person on your account you will be enabling yourMonday family or friends to access funds at theto time of your death without – Saturday, 9.00am 6.00pm. having to wait for all the Morans legal matters to be sorted out. This Garage - Dingle can be particularly beneficial in the event of an unexpected death when a family may be asset rich but experience a cash shortage while probate is in process, and it serves to relieve potential cash-flow difficulties.

BUDGET 2022: HOW IT WILL IMPACT YOUR POCKET AS A FARMER

60 TEAGASC STAFF EARN OVER €100,000

Following on from the announcements in Tuesday’s Budget 2022, the budget estimates provide €1.858 billion for the DAFM. This is in addition to almost €1.2 billion in EU-funded direct payments to support farm incomes and reward good agricultural and environmental practices. Further funding will be made available to the Fisheries and Agri-Food sectors in 2022 through the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR).

Many people often wonder where their “Tax-Dollar” or “Tax-Euro” goes. This is of particular to the farming sector who hear rumours of and face cuts in direct payments and reduced scheme opportunities, under new proposals under CAP.

The main points of the budget, that affect the farming community are as follows:

That is according to the 2020 Teagasc Annual Report, which shows that four members of staff earned between €160,000 and €170,000. Five staff earned between €120,000 and €130,000 with 22 earning between €110,000 and €120,000. A further 35 earned between €100,000 and €110,000. The salaries of staff at all grades have been gradually restored since 2017, including the salaries of senior management, after the cuts imposed as a result of financial emergency measures introduced by government between 2009 and 2015. Numbers employed by Teagasc during 2020 increased from 1,258 to 1,290 and pay costs increased from €71.25 million to €74.12 million.

• Some €872 million in funding for Rural Development and Forestry supports, including: • More than €100 million in targeted supports for the beef and sheep sectors, including BDGP, BEEP-S, Sheep Welfare Scheme and Dairy Calf Programme • €80m for on-farm investments through TAMS, including specific supports for solar energy installation • €7m for Enterprise Ireland capital investment schemes, to support the meat and dairy sector to invest in greater product and market diversification • €4m for the establishment of a Food Ombudsman’s Office • An innovative initiative to grant aid and support the planting of multispecies swards • Ongoing access to flexible loan schemes through the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland for farmers, fishers and food and drink SMEs • €15m for the continuation of the soil sampling scheme • An extra €1.5m to support the work of animal welfare organisations, meeting the commitment in the Programme for Government to double this funding; • An additional €2m to support farm safety initiatives; • €21m to support organic farming; • A tax package that protects the stamp duty relief for young, trained farmers, and stock relief. Also, extends the excise relief currently available to micro-breweries to cider producers; • €153m for Teagasc; • €53m for Bord Bia. •

€376 million to the Department of Rural and Community Development;

The Department of Agriculture maintain that the combination of direct financial supports and taxation reliefs in this budget, together with the supports to be provided under the Brexit Adjustment Reserve in the future, will provide “a good, balanced package of measures” for farmers, but time will tell. Other aspects of the budget will include the following Agricultural Measures: • €1.85bn for Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine – an increase of €32 million on 2021; • Zoned-land tax to encourage the use of land for building homes as part of the Housing for All Plan. Will be based on the market value of land (Minister Donohoe believes the initial rate should be 3% and will be “open to reviewing this in the future”); • General stock relief measure for farmers to continue until the end of 2024. For young, trained farmers and farm partnerships and the stamp duty relief to continue until the end of 2022; • Funding for second phase of Soil Sampling Programme; • €4m for Food Ombudsman; • Decrease in the Farmers’ Flat Rate Addition from 5.6-5.5%; • CAP fund being finalised. Details will be publish soon as part of a further public consultation on the plan; 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The numbers employed at Teagasc earning over €100,000 last year increased by 11 to 66, compared with 2019.

Pay to key management personnel totalled €744,000, while the former director of Teagasc, Prof. Gerry Boyle received €167,000 in basic pay. Teagasc’s spend on legal costs and settlements concerning legal proceedings decreased from €227,000 in 2019 to €151,000 last year. The breakdown shows that €12,000 was spent on legal fees along with an additional €139,000 on 23 separate settlements. They also spend on consultancy costs declined from €1.62 million in 2019 to €1.29 million last year, which includes €391,000 on architectural and engineering services; €351,000 on research advice; €258,000 on ‘other’; €186,000 on legal advice; €87,000 on pensions/human resources; and €25,000 on financial/tax advice. The agency last year recorded a pre-tax surplus of €2.62m and this followed a pre-tax deficit of €76,000 in 2019. Teagasc’s total income reduced from €191.37 million to €189.58 million last year and its total spend reduced from €185.68 million to €179.38 million. The bulk of Teagasc’s income came through a €152.52 million grant from government, which to the major extent is your “Tax-Euro”. The agency also generated €33.88 million in operational income. The agency recorded an operational surplus of €10.19 million before €7.5 million was transferred to a capital account. In a note concerning procurement, the report states that “in 2020 Teagasc found that of 232 purchase orders, those relating to four suppliers were non-compliant and the value of non-compliant purchase orders was €166,180”. The report also states that Teagasc exceeded its pay ceiling of €67.8 million by €967,000 in 2020. FARM SAFETY EQUIPMENT SCHEME LAUNCHED This is basically a “Wear and Tear” allowances for farm safety equipment scheme and will be known as the Acceleration of Wear and Tear Allowances for Farm Safety Equipment Scheme and will be administered by DAFM and was introduced by Minister Martin Heyden. It will introduce accelerated capital allowances for qualifying farm safety equipment. It places a particular emphasis on supporting those who have suffered life-changing injuries as a result of incidents on farms. A large proportion of all fatal workplace incidents (42%) occur in the agriculture, fishing, and forestry sector. Data from the HSA shows that between 2016 and 2020, there were 100 fatal incidents on farms. Currently, capital allowances are available at 12.5% per annum over eight years for agricultural equipment generally. The new scheme will allow for accelerated capital allowances of 50% p.a. over two years for certain eligible equipment. This eligible equipment includes, for example, chemical storage cabinets, anti-backing gates, and adaptive equipment to assist farmers with disabilities. An annual total equipment cost of €5 million p.a., excluding VAT, for the measure will apply. Farmers may now apply for certificates for the Accelerated Capital Allowance to the DAFM. It is hoped that this scheme will support and

help farmers get back to work, especially those who suffered a serious physical injury. There will be an emphasis on physical and mental health and wellbeing DAFM CONSIDERING ‘ACTIVE FARMER’ STOCKING DENSITY The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is considering a minimum stocking density for the definition of active farmers in the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Although such a plan is in the early stages of development, a figure of 0.15 livestock units (LU)/ha is being considered. This figure is the same as the one currently used in the Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) scheme. The adoption of a minimum stocking density by which to define active farmers in the next CAP would apply to direct payments as well.

Déardaoin 28ú Deireadh Fómhair

It’s not clear at present what types of animals will be included in this definition, with some farm organisations adamant that only cattle and sheep should be considered. For farmers who do not have a livestock enterprise, it is thought that they will have to provide some documented proof of their farming activities. This may also apply to persons engaged in such activities as making and selling hay. It is also understood that the department is looking at potential changes to the current situation around leasing entitlements long-term. It is also being proposed that DAFM was also examining the question of clawbacks on entitlement transactions, but more on this later. BPS 2021 PAYMENTS TO BE ISSUED It was also announced that BPS 2021 payments will be issued from next week. Farmers are advised to keep an “eye” on their bank accounts, as in many cases notice is not issued by post and many farmers have not registered their mobile phone number with DAFM son will not receive a Text Notification. Also, please remember that once the payment is issued, it normally takes Five Working Days to get to your account, so some may not actually see the cash payment until possibly as late as the following week. So, let’s get those bills paid!

Entrants from the Dingle area who featured in the awards category were as follows--Kennedy Butchers got gold in the Beef section and silver in the Lamb section. Mai and Tommy Bric of Dingle Farm were awarded silver in the Milk section. Dingle Distillery got silver for its Single Malt. West of Dingle really swept the boards with gold for both its Atlantic Sea Salt and Infused Sea Salt entries as well as the Best in County Award and Rogha na Gaeltachta Award also. With such high quality produce here in our local area all I can say is why shop anywhere else when supporting local should be top priority on everybodys list. Congratulations to all the award winners and to all the unsuccessful entries as well. Great to see so many of the big supermarkets using the Blas Awards emblems in their adverts over the past few weeks as it really means so much to the suppliers and retailers to get such exposure. FILM FESTIVAL. The Dingle Whiskey International Film Festival will hold its inaugural weekend in November 2022. A creative leader will be appointed shortly to organise and plan the event. With grant aid from the Leader programme a new film studies course will take place in Dingle over a 20 week period requiring a committment of two nights a week plus some practical work as well. Further information at film@dinglehub.info or phone 0851166770. ROAD SAFETY. A number of readers have asked me to remind pedestrians to please wear some high vis vests or at least bright clothing when using our public roads at any time of the day or night. The Ballinaboula Walking Circuit has become very popular in recent years and although great road widening has been undertaken by Kerry County Council a little thought to ones clothing will keep the area safer for all road users.

A Spicy Chicken Curry Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

If you want to drink that’s your business. If you want to stop we can help. Kerry Area of AA information number 087-0522911

Maurice Kavanagh Cabs 4 Seater 087-6553399 8 Seater 087-3932333 Curries are an amazing thing to cook and especially from scratch. This recipe is easy and it will give you the confidence and hopefully will inspire you to cook more with spices. This curry is hot and spicy, but you can cut back a little with the chilli powder if you do not want it to hot. An addition of yogurt at the end will help to cool it a little too. I hope you love this and give it a go.

info@dinglebaycabs.com

Ingredients dash of oil 1 onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, diced piece of ginger (about ½“) diced 1 green chilli, seeds removed and diced 1 tsp. chilli powder 1 tsp. garam masala 1 tsp. ground turmeric 1 ½ tsp. ground cumin 1 ½ tsp. ground coriander 1 tin of tomatoes 500g chicken, diced (chicken thighs meat will give better flavour- if using chicken breast cut the cooking time by about 10 minutes) ½ lemon, juiced bunch of coriander, chopped 1 tpsn. yogurt Method Cook the onions, garlic, ginger and green chilli in a little oil over a low heat for about 10 minutes. Add in the ground spices and stir well. Cook for a minute or so, add in the tomato and a little water. Bring this to the boil. Add in the chicken pieces, stir well and cover with a lid. Simmer this for about 30-35 minutes, check it after 10 minutes or so to make sure there is enough liquid in the pot. If it has dried out add a little water and continue cooking. Once the chicken has cooked, remove from the heat and add in the lemon juice and coriander. Spoon some yogurt over the top. Serve with fluffy rice and naan bread. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Déarfar Aifreann daoibh go léir. As we fondly remember our mother, Hain, on her first anniversary, we wish to express our gratitude to everyone who supported us and sympathised with us. We acknowledge you our relatives, our neighbours and our friends who shared in our bereavement. Your kind words, cards and letters were of great help to us. We thank those who called to the house with food to ensure we were well taken care of as well as those who took on responsibilities to lighten our load during those dark days. We are hugely indebted to Fr. Michael and Kathy from the parish. Your professionalism and kindness were a massive source of support to us. Thank you too to Dónal O’Connor, funeral director, for going about your business competently and with compassion. LGFA U-12 Division 2 Shield Final Report: Annascaul / Castlegregory 3-9 Glenflesk 2-4 Annascaul/Castlegregory girls ,runners up in Division 2 played third placed Glenflesk in the Shield final. This turned out to be a cracking game between two evenly matched teams. Good play from Keelin set up sharpshooter Caoimhe for the opening point for A/C and she followed up with a free. Glenflesk showed they meant business and scored 2 quick points to stay in touch. The tireless Alanna picked out co captain Sharon, and our full forward does what she does best, she scores goals! Her inside forward partner Saoirse wiggled free for a point before Glenflesk upped the ante through Megan O Reilly, Orna Doherty and Niamh Brosnan to score 1-1 despite the best efforts of Tara, Caoimhe Cawley and Orla. 1-3 a piece now.

and Ger O Callaghan who helped out throughout the year. Thanks to the continuous support and encouragement from all the parents and supporters who travel far and near!!! Finally ,thanks to the fantastic bunch of 30 girls, who always give their all both in training and in games,a joy to work with! Panel: Beatrice Dowling, Tara Laide,Sinead O

Connell,Jenna CreanRachel Heasman,Caoimhe Curran, Sadbh Moynihan, Ella Wallace, Muireann Mehigan,Liwia Polanczick,Orla Curran ,Alanna Griffin, Caoimhe Cawley, Niamh O Callaghan,Molly McCarthy,Annie O Brien, Leah Courtney, Keelin Clifford, Lauren Foley,Maria Keane, Amy Kennedy,Aoibhinn O Callaghan, Caoimhe Skinner,Lia Sheehy,Lily Falvey,Andrea Fitzgerald, Saoirse Brosnan,Sharon Enright,Chloe Passaway,Aoife Kennedy

The home side drove on with Leah teeing up Caoimhe for a point as Keelin found herself in space and finished well to raise a green flag. Caoimhe got the final point of the half to leave it A/C 2-5 Glenflesk 1-3. The second half saw Keelin fetch a great ball and send it into Saoirse for a point but Glenflesk with Aoife Donovan,Leah O Sullivan and Emma Dineen all to the fore ,scored a fine goal and followed up with a point to narrow the gap to two points. Alanna laid a lovely ball to Niamh and she split the posts before Niamh flicked on to Keelin who, with her confidence up,raised a white flag. A/C 2-8 Glenflesk 2-4 at the final water break. The last quarter saw Beatrice's huge kickouts along with co captain Leah's driving runs give us a platform. Lia Sheehy, the gritty Molly Mc and Caoimhe Curran put a stop to Glenflesk's supply to Orna Doherty who was by now, well shepherded by Caoimhe Cawley and Orla. Lia intercepted twice and set speedster Aoibhinn off ,quick hands saw the ball move to Niamh, onto Caoimhe ,who slipped to Keelin and she scored the all important goal to put daylight between the teams. Caoimhe Skinner took her tally to 1-4 with the last point of the night as Ref Gordon Kerins blew the final whistle. Huge thanks to the Glenflesk girls, coaches and in particular Harry for his kind words afterwards, his speech was well received by all our girls A fantastic end to the year for the girls as they added The County League Division 2 Shield to the North Kerry Division 2 title that they won earlier in the summer. Thanks to Colm Kennedy and all in Annascaul for having the pitch in top class shape. For ten of our girls, it was their final outing at this age group: Beatrice, Caoimhe C,Molly,Alanna,Leah C,Keelin,Caoimhe S,Lauren,Rachel and Sharon and they really drove on their younger teammates. Thanks to Katherine Syme Skinner,Mairead Clifford,Katrina Mehigan, Conor Slattery, Neil Sheehy,Brendan Falvey,Paddy Curran

Siamsa Tíre, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland and one of the country’s busiest arts centres, has drawn back the curtains on its stage, reopened its galleries, and put together an exciting programme of live events to celebrate the return of the arts this autumn. “2020 was a tough year for the arts sector worldwide,” says Siamsa Tíre’s Executive Director Róisín McGarr. “We were unable to host any live events, which meant our doors remained closed to the public. We’re delighted to once again throw them open and welcome the arts-loving community of Kerry back with a programme that has something for all tastes and ages.” The next event taking place at the theatre is a performance of Dances for Inside and Outside by the Irish Modern Dance Theatre on October 16th. Featuring dancers from Ireland, Angola, Poland, France, and Ethiopia, this show is a reflection upon our lived experience of the pandemic and what we learned from it. The precarious hold we have on life, our need to be together, and the importance of sharing joy. On October 17th, Siamsa Tíre hosts the closing night film of this year’s Kerry International Film Festival. Foscadh (Shelter) is an Irish language film based on a story by award-winning novelist Donal Ryan that has been selected as Ireland’s Oscar contender for Best International Film in 2022. It tells the story of a 28-year-old man whose over-cossetting parents die, leaving him mountain land that’s in the way of a lucrative wind farm development. He’s forced to navigate the choppy waters of trust, vengeance, and romance for the first time. Monday, October 25th, marks the beginning of Siamsa Tíre’s Samhain Festival. In bygone times, our ancestors celebrated Samhain by drawing in close to the fire and entertaining each other with stories of spirits and other worlds. Siamsa Tíre invites you to continue this tradition with a festival of fun for all the family. The line-up includes I am Baba, a theatrical experience for parents and babies; children’s workshops; a performance of Alice and the Wolf, which is a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood for the digital age; storytelling with renowned seanchaí Eddie Lenihan; an outdoor presentation of work by the National Folk Theatre Training Academy; and the centrepiece of this year’s festival, the children’s art exhibition ‘A Way Home’. This major commissioned art exhibition for children tells the story of two siblings who get lost in the woods at Halloween. They meet all sorts of otherworldly creatures that teach them the true meaning of this festival. The story was written by children’s author Olivia Hope and features artwork by 20 renowned children’s book illustrators. November kicks off with Circus Siamsa, an eclectic extravaganza which brings to stars of contemporary circus, street, and variety performance to the stage in shows for all the family. The rest of the month is devoted to music. Fans of singer-songwriter Old Sea Legs – aka Ian Bermingham, the former frontman of Dublin Quartet The Eskies – will be delighted to hear that he’s performing at Siamsa Tíre on November 12th. Music of a more classical kind will fill the auditorium on Thursday November 25th when the Irish National Opera will stage The Lighthouse. Three singers and a 12-player orchestra will perform what is acknowledged as one of the operatic masterpieces of the 20th century. More classical music will echo through Siamsa Tíre on Friday, December 10th, when the Ficino Quartet take to the stage.

We are now open subject to Covid restrictions

Opening Hours Monday - Saturday 10 - 5 'A book is something you lose yourself in and find yourself in' (Thanks, Vick Hope)

Small Changes: Halloween

The origins of Halloween are believed to lie in the pagan Celtic festival of Samhain which was marked with great gatherings and feasts to celebrate the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Our ancestors believed that the dead, both good and bad, could walk among the living during this time, so they prepared offerings of food and drink to welcome their beloved departed as well as to appease spirits who might mean to do them ill. They also lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off ghosts. The traditions of Samhain later became incorporated into the commemoration of All Saints’ Day (also known as All Hallows’ Day) and the vigil held on the day before, All Hallows’ Eve (from which the word Halloween is derived), was the early version of a modern Halloween. Like many cultural festivals, the observance of Halloween has changed over the years. Increasing commercialisation means that it is now more about celebrating the profits gained from promoting overconsumption (Americans spent an estimated $9 billion on the holiday in 2019) than celebrating a good harvest. The only truly scary thing about present day Halloween is the vast quantities of waste produced.

pumpkin for every meal over Halloween (there is the added advantage that large populations of fruit flies are not attracted to painted pumpkins!). An assortment gourds of different colours and sizes can make a much more impressive display and are much tastier than the traditional large orange pumpkin. The seeds can be dried to eat as a snack while the flesh can be used in soups, salads, quiches, muffins etc. – there are literally hundreds of recipes to choose and many of these options can be frozen to eat at a later stage. Finally, compost the rest of the vegetable in your home composter or your brown bin so its nutrients can be recycled rather than throwing it into the black waste bin. Costumes- The original costumes for Samhain were made of furs and feathers so that people would be mistaken for animals by the spirits. Fast forward to the present day where the vast majority of Halloween costumes are made fabrics derived from oil and most end up in landfill. In the UK alone, 2000 tonnes of plastic waste were generated from throwaway Halloween clothing in 2019. To avoid this waste, costumes can be swopped or handed down. Both charity shops in Dingle have an array of second-hand costumes on sale at the minute. If you are any way imaginative or creative, making your own costume is a great idea and there is always the retro 1980s option of using a white sheet to dress up as a ghost. Trick or Treating – Mummering/Souling was popular throughout Europe on feast days in centuries past. People, often in costume, would go door to door for food or money in return for a prayer. These practices are linked to the current tradition of ‘trick or treat’. Again, this tradition has been hijacked by commercialisation.

Supermarket shelves have been piled high with Halloween treats over the past number of weeks alongside the plastic pumpkins needed to carry the loot. If you wish to reduce packaging waste then ‘cash not trash’ is a welcome alternative. If you expect a lot of visitors and think sweets are a cheaper option then try to bulk buy treats that are not individually wrapped and hand them out in paper rather than plastic bags. If you have time on your hands then homemade treats are a sustainable option. This is the first year that soft plastic packaging is accepted in recycling bins. Make sure all treat wrappers and packaging are clean, dry and loose before placing them in the green bin. Decorations – Decorating your house has always been a part of the Christmas tradition but the practice of decorating your home for Halloween has really caught on in Ireland over the past decade in particular. Reusable decorations and D.I.Y. creations are the most environmentally sound choices. Halloween Games - In 2017 Irish consumers spent 65 million euro on Halloween. I would hedge a bet though that the best memories most children will have from Halloween are not of decorations, costumes or the treats they received but rather the time spent with friends and family playing Halloween games. Bobbing for apples, snap apple, flour mountain, fortune telling games (e.g. ring for marriage, rag for poverty) or playing hide and seek outside in the garden at night are just a few of the classics.

Pumpkins- Jack, of Jack O’ Lantern fame, is said to have tricked the devil into granting him eternal life. When Jack died and was not permitted into heaven, he went to ask the devil to allow him into hell. The devil, who unsurprisingly held a grudge, threw a lump of blazing coal from hell at him. Jack, the cratur, put the coal into a turnip to use a lantern to search for his eternal resting place and so began the practice of carving turnips in Ireland at Halloween. Irish emigrants brought this tradition to America with them but pumpkins were deemed to be more readily available and easier to carve. The problem with this tradition is that people tend to forget that pumpkins are food which require a lot of valuable resources to grow (fertiliser, water, energy, etc.). A British study last year found that 1 in 7 people didn’t know that the seeds and flesh of pumpkins can be eaten. Only a third of people in the UK bothered to cook any of it and data from the US and the UK show the vast majority of pumpkins end up in landfill where they release methane as they decompose. It is unlikely that the habits of Irish consumers differ in any of these respects. There are, however, easy ways to reduce the impact of jack-o-lanterns. To begin with, pumpkins could be painted rather than carved so that they last much longer. This is handy if you have more than one and don’t want to eat

‘Tarraingíonn scéal scéal eile!’ Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Fuaireas glaoch gutháin ó mo dheirfiúr Proinnsiasa le linn Lúnasa seo chaite agus í ar saoire ar an bhfód dúchais i Lios Póil lena h-iníon Muireann atá seacht bliana d’aois. D’eachtraigh sí dom go raibh Muireann á tabhairt aici ó lá go lá go dtísna h-áiteanna ab ansa léi féin agus í óg. An lá áirithe seo, bheartaíodar beirt siúl siar an bóthar ó Pháirc an Teampaill, mar ar tóghadh í, go seanScoil Chluain Chumhra, a bhí mar nós laethúil aici féin is a clann dearthár is deirféar – Liam, Gearóid, Áine, Brenda agus Fidelma, agus iad ag freastal ar an mbunscoil i seachtóidí na h-aoise seo chaite. Ar shroichint na scoile dóibh, arsa Muireann, ‘Ba mhaith dul isteach i do sheanscoil, Mom.’ Bhí a máthair i bponc, ach bheartaigh sí siúl isteach i seanchlós na scoile ar aon nós, agus de réir a chéile shroicheadar príomhdhoras na scoile ón dtaobh thoir den bhfoirgneamh. Bhí an doras iata rompu. ‘Osclóimid an doras,’ arsa an cailín óg. ‘Is baolach go bhfuil sé fé ghlas,’ a d’fhreagair a máthair. Leis sin bhrúigh an gearrchaile an doras, agus an chéad rud eile d’oscail rompu, agus b’sheo leo isteach. Ba mhór idir radharc an lae úd agus cuimhní na scoile i gceann Phroinnsiasa ón uair dhéanach a shiúil sí ar leacacha an tsiúltáin ina cailín scoile di. Roimpi an uair úd bheadh casóga na leanaí crochta ar chrúcaí ó dhá thaobh an phasáiste. Ach inniu, fallaí loma gan chrúca gan chasóig, agus boladh taise agus trochlaithe/decay san aer. Fós fhéin, cuimhní geala óna laethanta scoile a bhrúcht ina hintinn. Thaispeáin Proinnsiasa an chéad seomra ar chlé do Mhuireann, mar a mbíodh Ranganna Naíonán, agus Bríd Budhlaeir mar mhúinteoir geanúil aici ó 1969-’70. Ó sheomra go seomra leo ansan, go dtángadar go dtí an seomra deiridh ar dheis, an seomra rince le linn di féin ar scoil, agus lem linnse leis! Cad a bhí ann rompu ach carn cóipleabhar scoile. Le sracfhéachaint orthu thuigeadh do Phroinnsiasa go mb’fhéidir go raibh luach stairiúil leo. Ghlaoigh sí orm le fios a scéil dom, agus loirg mo chomhairle fésna cóipleabhair. Tar éis ábhar machnaimh, ghlaos ar an sagart paróiste, An tAth. Mícheál Ó Muineacháin, agus niseas ár scéal dó, agus loirgíos a bheannacht chun na cóipleabhair a thabhairt slán – is thug go fonnmhar. Chun scéal fada a chiorrú beagán, bhíos fhéin i Lios Póil don deireadh seachtaine seo chaite. Tar éis aifrinn Dé Domhnaigh i gcuimhne ar ár dtuistí, thaispeáin Proinnsiasa an mála de chóipleabhair agus de sheanleabhair scoile dom, a bhí cnuasaithe roinnt seachtainí roimhe sin aici. I measc na gcóipleabhar, bhí ceann amháin a sheas amach, cóipleabhar d’aistí breachta ar VERE FOSTER”S RULED EXERCISE BOOK le buachaill scoile a bhí i Rang VII i 1941, ceithre fichid bliain ó shin, agus b’é siúd Tomás Ó hAiniféin (1927-2010) ó Lios Deargáin – a bhí in aon rang lem mháthair Kathleen, ach gur chuaigh sise go Meánscoil na Toirbhirte, Daingean Uí Chúis i 1939. Ceithre cinn déag d’aistí atá i gcóipleabhar Thomáis le ceithre leathanach is dhá scór lámhscríofa i bpeannaireacht agus leitriú den scoth, gach re aiste acu i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla. Seo a leanas an ceathrú aiste, agus fágfad fút fhéin, a léitheoir, caighdeán na Gaelainne inti a mheas: Pósadh Tuaithe Ins an Inid is gnách le daoine timpeall na háite anso pósadh agus cleamhnaistí a dhéanamh. Nuair a bhíonn dhá líon tí ar intinn cleamhnas a dhéanamh le chéile cuirtear scéalaí ó thigh acu go tigh an líon tí eile. Uaireanta téann an scéalaí ar muin capaill nó ’na chois, agus más ’na chois a théann sé, bíonn bata siúil ’na láimh aige, madra lena chois agus buidéal lán d’uisce beatha ’na phóca agus dorchadas na hoíche ann. Is chun na seandaoine a mhealladh a bhíonn an buidéal aige. Nuair a théann sé isteach ní ligeann sé faic air, agus bíonn sé ag caint agus ag cur tré chéile mar gheall ar an gcogadh nó an aimsir. Leanann said ag caint mar sin ar feadh tamaill. Ansan tarraingítear anuas an líon tí eile, agus moltar go hard iad go mór mhór an óigbhean nó an baitsiléar inphósta. Má bhíonn ag éirí leis an scéalaí, tarraingíonn sé amach an buidéal agus tugtar lán gloinne do bhean an tí chun í bhogadh, agus ansan geibheann fear an tí a chuid de. Má aontaíonn siad, beartaítear lá chun dul ’on Daingean chun na coinníollacha a tharrac agus an bhileog d’fháil ón sagart, agus socrú leis i dtaobh an méid a bheadh á éileamh as an lánúin a phósadh, agus lá an phósta a bheartú. Maidin lae an phósta tagann cúig nó sé ghluaisteán go tigh an bhaitsiléara agus imíonn siad leo go dtí an sáipéal, an baitsiléar sa 36 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

ghluaisteán tosaigh, agus an óigbhean sa ghluaisteán deiridh. Nuair a bhíonn said pósta tagann siad anuas an tsráid agus isteach i dtigh ósta nó i dtigh tabhairne, agus bíonn ól agus rince agus ragairne acu ar feadh an lae. Ansan tráthnóna tagann siad go tigh an bhaitsiléara agus bíonn prátaí plúracha agus rósta blasta ullamh ina gcomhair. Nuair a bhíonn ite acu, bíonn ól agus rince acu ar feadh an chuid eile den oíche. Marie Ní Ainiféin/Uí Ghrífín le cóipleabhar a hathar Tomás Pic le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh

Scéilín grinn Tráthnóna Domhnaigh an lae céanna, chuas ar thuairisc mo sheancharad Tommy Evans ar an dTobar, agus bhí comhluadar caoin eadrainn ar feadh uaire, mar is iondúil, bail air. Thaispeánas cóipleabhar an Ainiféinigh, agus do léas aiste Thomáis ‘Pósadh Tuaithe’ dó. Ní túisce an aiste léite agam, ná gur tharraing Tommy an scéal seo a leanas chugam: ‘A late vocation!’ There was this bachelor, and he got, as I describe it, a late vocation – he decided he’d get a nice girl for himself and settle down. But, there was a farmer across the parish anyway, he had three daughters, and he was anxious to get rid of the daughters too. So, my bachelor, anyway, put the bottle in the back pocket, himself, and he went to the house, and the old man, a cute old, well, I won’t say what he was, he was fairly well up, he introduced him to the oldest of the three daughters first, ‘great girl, great housekeeper, milk the cows, bake the bread, but, he said, she has a small bit of a lame step, but, you’d hardly notice it.’ So, my bachelor friend had two chances left, and he took a chance that he’d get the younger – the second of the family. Farmer gave the same introduction: ‘great girl, turn her hand to anything, milk the cows, bake the bread, anything, she has a small bit of a squint in one eye, but you’d hardly notice it.’ So your man said things could only improve, he was introduced to the young girl, a lovely girl – love at first sight by your man. What Are You Drinking With That?

Oyster Season

The great oyster, in all its simplistic glory is one food that can divide a nation. In Ireland, it would appear, you either love them or you hate them. For some it’s a texture thing, for others it’s the salinity, and in general the overall appearance mightn’t seem altogether pleasing...even an oyster lover will admit that. The native Irish oyster season is now in full swing as it kicked off on the 1st of September. The Pacific oyster was introduced here in the 1960s and appears frequently on Irish menus. During the months of the year spelt with an ‘r’ chefs feature our native oyster more often. That we are surrounded by the ocean and to have these delectables at our fingertips is a blessing, but are you pairing them with the right drinks? The classic oyster and a cold, creamy pint of Guinness pairing is hard to beat when surrounded by beautiful views of Dingle Bay but let us delve deeper. Champagne is another one of those classic pairings for those looking for a little more luxury in their lives and is great with oysters cooked in a creamy, buttery sauce. The salinity of an oyster is looking for a crisp, dry, high acid wine with a clean finish. Wines with a

minerality that can stand up to the salty oyster pair beautifully, so why not try Txakoli from the Spanish Basque Country or an Albarino from Rías Baixas. Out of the Blue here in Dingle have a fabulous Vino Atlantico, Txakoli by the glass as the perfect pairing. Look for wines that have a crisp apple-y flavour like Muscadet or Sauvignon Blanc, especially if you’re a vinegar mignonette fan. Looking to try something a little different? Pair your oyster with a little Sake or iced-cold vodka. You’ll want to avoid fruity wines that may be a little flabby in the mouth, you don’t need anything to add to the fattiness of the oyster. Certainly, avoid oaked wines with raw oysters and any wines with a high tannic structure so no red wines. If you are somebody who likes a little fruitiness try a good quality dry cider like Stonewell. When pairing beer with oysters don’t go for anything big or bold, stick to lagers or a pilsner that won’t overpower the oyster. Try a Scurvy Dog IPA from the Tom Crean Brewery in Kenmare, a wonderfully crisp and light beer that would nearly convert even the most seasoned wine drinker. For those of you who are the designated driver a good pairing doesn’t always have to involve alcohol. Kombucha has proven to be a wonderful pairing with oysters, find yourself a nice dry refreshing Kombucha or even some sparkling water with cucumber. There are some fantastic non alcoholic beers on the market now like Brewdog Punk AF. There are so many options to choose from when pairing your oysters this oyster season. “The world is your oyster. It’s up to you to find the pearls” – Chris Gardner Please, always drink responsibly and never – EVER – drive after drinking. Sláinte mhaith duit fhéin agus dod’chlann. Cheers

So, what does that mean for tourism – it means a sustainable and responsible approach for the future and to bring this together as a community across the peninsula. Sustainability means different things to different people – different industries, different sectors. So, from a tourism point of view, sustainability is "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities" (United Nations World Tourism Organisation 2021). Darach Ó Murchú i mbun Scoil Foraoise le leanaí Chorca Dhuibhne. Ceann d’imeachtaí na Scéime Teanga Teaghlaigh Tús Maith is ea an Scoil Foraoise ina bhfoghlaimíonn na leanaí fén mbithéagsúlacht agus fé chnuasach bídh agus fé scileanna maireachtála amuigh fén aer. Gach eolas ó Órlaith Ruiséal ag 066 9156100. Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne Bhí cáil ar an airgead luachra i gcónaí dá chumhracht. Dheintí é a chur i ndeochanna dá mhilseacht. Chuirtí i bhfíon agus i mbeoir é sna meánaoiseanna. Ach bhí daoine ann a chreid go bhféadfadh cumhracht airgead luachra duine a chur ina chodladh leis agus go mb’fhéidir ná dúiseodh sé as an gcodladh sin. Is mar gheall air sin a chreidtí in áiteanna go raibh mí-ádh ag baint len é a thabhairt isteach sa tigh. Tá scéal áfach

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Deinimíd comhgháirdeachas leis an bhfile tréitheach Ceaití de Bheildiún a ghnóthaigh duais filíochta Mhícheál Ó hArtnéide le déanai. Tá scata duaiseanna buaite ag Ceaití. Bainim an- shásamh as a a cuid filíochta. Bean shocair, thuiscionach grámhar coitianta. Aimsir Tiocfaidh an fuacht ach tá sé barra-déanach go maith i mbliana. Bhí cúpla tuille bháistí againn agus gála fiáin oíche amháin ar a trí a chlog istoíche ach ní mhair i bhfad. Dúirt fear liom nár chuala sé faic mar go raibh doimhin chodladh air. Bhí na fearais éistithe cluas tógtha amach ag fear eile agus ‘sa chás sin ‘, ar sé, ‘ní chloisim dada’. Nách breá do dhaoine aírithe é. Bás Bhuail an bás daoine ins sa phobal seo againne le déanai. Duine acu sin b’a Eibhlín Uí Choileáin, Avondale, an Daingean. Bean gheanúil fháilteach b’ea Eibhlín. Bhíos an- mhór léi agus b’amhla do scata eile. Luig an bás go mór uirthi nuair a cailleadh Tadhg Óg agus a garmhac Séamus. Meala mór a bás dá céile Tadhg a hiníon Máire agus a beirt mhac Aodh agus Mícheál. Bhí an saol mór sa tsochraid i dTeampall Bhaile ‘n Mhuilinn. Bhí an- shuim aici sna cluichí Beiriste. Solas na b’Flaitheas ag a caoin anam. Ní rabhas timpeall do shochraid Mhike Jim Mac Gearailt ón nGualán Thoir Mac do Phaddy Jim go rabhas an mhór leis. Fear breá socair b’ea Mike ná raibh rian don leisce ina chnámha. Méala mór dá chéile Aingeal dá gceathrar iníon Orla Kate Nicola agus Deirdre, mac do Mícheál, deartháracha Pádraig agus Seán agus deirféaracha Nóra agus Peig. Parrthas Dé dá anam mánla. Seasca dó bliain a bhí Harris Moore, Meiricéanach a fuair bás le déanaí ina thig féin i gCill Mic ‘n Domhnaigh mar a raibh sé ag cur fé le blianta. Bhí musaem ag Harris i gCill Mhic an Domhnaigh ina raibh iontaisí ó i bhfad siar. Maireann a mháthair i gCalifornia, deartháir i mBerlin agus deartháir i gColombia Mheiriceá Theas. Bhí socraithe á ndéanamh aige le cara dhó a mhusaem a thógaint ar láimh agus bhí sé beartaithe aige dul dtí grian Cholombia.’Tá blianta fada caite agam sa Mhusaem seo’, a dúirt sé liom, ‘is mithid bóthar eile a thabhairt orm féin.’ Fear ceoil b’ea é agus bhí CD déanta aige féin agus Steve Cooney. Bhaininn an- shásamh as a choluadar, an- chleachta. Go soilsí Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam féilteach fáilteach. Fear a bhí ar m’aithne nuair a bhíos i gcoláiste i gCorcaigh go raibh an- mheas agam air b’é sin Niall ó Murchú, Corcaíoch cathrach ná raibh aon teora lena eolas. Bhí sé ina Ollamh Fisice agus mórán taighde déanta aige. Bhí buachaill ón Sciobairín i lóistín liom tamall. Innealltoireacht a bhí sé siud ag staidéar. Lá duirt sé liom go raibh sé ag léacht agus go raibh Ó Murchú sa bhliain céanna agus dúirt sé ná raibh aon teora le Niall. Bhíodh sé ag ceartú an Ollaimh uaireanta nó ag cabhrú leis. Níorbh aon nath aige aon abhar. Bhí cur amach aige ar chúrsaí spóirt poilitíochta 7rl. Ní bheadh sé ina ghaige. Fear cleachtan b’ea Niall a bhí pósta le bean ó Mheiriceá Donna, go bhfuil Gaeilge chomh maith liom féin aici agus ag a beirt clainne, Niall agus Aonghus. Gan dabht bhí athair agus máthair Niall líofa sa Ghaolainn agus láidir i gcúis na Gaolainne. Bhí Diarmaid an t- athair ina eagarthóir ar an iris Agus ar feadh i bhfad. Maoileoineach b’ea mháthair Niall, scolairí agus lucht cúise b’ea iad. Deirfiúr di mháthair mo chéile. Beidh Niall ar a thriall le Naomh Peadar. Ní chuirfinn aon phingin ar aon duine acu ó thaobh eolais. Suaimhneas síorraí ag do anam caoin cneasta, a Niall. An Feirmeoir. Dar fia go bhfuil eagla ag teacht ar fheirmeoirí go mbeidh díothú mór ar a líon bó. Tá na húdaráis ag iarraidh teacht ar leigheas. Tamall ó shin tháinig an scéim fuinnimh a ghinniúint. Sclátaí móra a chur ar cheann an tí a thabharfadh dóthain fuinnimh le freastal ar gach a mbain les an ndtigh. Bhí deontas le fáil as. Ní thug scata an bóthar san ortha féin - fíor bheagán feirmeoirí. Muilte gaoithe go bhfuil gaiscí déanta agus á dhéanamh ag scata tíortha go mór mór an feirmeoir. An tseachtain seo tá praghas maith ar bheithigh agus gamhna agus tá praghas maith ar uain agus caoire- ardú beag arís sna monarcain. Bhí CFE ag cur a gcás ar shráideanna an Chabháin 7rl agus as san anuas an go sráideanna Chorcaí an deire seachtaine seo caite. Cuimhnigh go bhfuil leigheas ach dul sa treo cheart. Gan beartais chiallmhara beidh gol agus gíoscán fiacla.
