An event not to be missed. Also breaking new ground for CCD is Brian Fleming's one man drama show 'Gis A Shot of Your Bongos Mister' at The Beehive Theatre. It'll make you laugh, make you think and most of all entertain you. Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 12th July the Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema will screen the Jodie Foster directed Money Monster. In this real-time, high stakes thriller George Clooney stars as a TV personality who advises his audience on commerce and Wall Street, and who is forcefully interrogated by a griefstricken bankrupt viewer who lost his money after a previous tip. With Julia Rberts starring as Clooney’s producer the pair must work furiously against the clock to unravel the mystery behind a conspiracy at the heart of today’s fast-paced, high-tech global markets. The following week on Tuesday 19th July the feature will be the action comedy film The Nice Guys. Starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling the film is set in 1970’s Los Angeles and follows a pair of detectives who stumble into a sprawling conspiracy while investigating the alleged suicide of a once-prominent female porn star. Harking back to the buddy comedies of a bygone era The Nice Guys is good old fashioned raucous fun 4 West Kerry Live

Hot and Spicy Spatch-Cock Chicken

Domestic Appliance Repair

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Get out the BBQ - regardless of the mixed weather we are having!! The good thing about this recipe is if you can keep the temperature to a medium heat and keep a lid on the BBQ you will be rewarded with a delicious smokey, spicy and moist chicken. Don’t be daunted by trying to remove the backbone from the chicken, it is a simple task all you need is a large scissors. This recipe will also work if you decide to cook it in your oven. If you are using the oven, set the temperature to 170ºC. As always try to source the best chicken you can find. Ingredients 1 Whole Chicken dry rub marinade 2 tablespoons chilli powder 4 teaspoons dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon ground fennel ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 1½ teaspoons salt ¾ teaspoon smoked paprika To prepare the rub, simply mix all the ingredients together and keep in an airtight jar until needed. This mixture can be added to any meat. Method To prepare the chicken Put the chicken on a chopping board with the breasts facing down. Using a large scissors cut the chicken down one side of the backbone, through the ribs (find the where the leg and the wing meet the backbone, it is where the shape become flat). Make an identical cut on the opposite side to remove the backbone completely. Place the chicken cut-side down and flatten with the heel of your hand. Rub the dry rub mixture under the skin onto the breast meat and leg meat and rub a little on the skin. Let stand at room temperature for at least 10 minutes and up to 30 minutes. To BBQ the chicken Preheat the grill to a medium heat, oil the rack and put the chicken skin side down. Close the lid on the bbq and allow this to cook for about 25 minutes (check the chicken so it not burning - if it is move it slightly from the heat). At this stage turn the chicken over and cook for a further 10 minutes. Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the chicken. Once it registers 75ºC take it off the direct heat and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before carving. Serve with a green salad and some crusty bread. Enjoy!!!

Unique Raffle To Aid Kerry Hospice

As a gesture of their appreciation to the Kerry Hospice, Gerard Ashe of Glen Minard, Lispole and his three daughters, Geraldine, Deirdre and Gráinne have organised a raffle in aid of the new Hospice Building at Kerry University Hospital. This charity is very close to their hearts as Cáit (Gerard’s wife and mother of the three girls) was a patient of Kerry Hospice for 18 months before she passed away in January this year. During this time, she was looked after by their Palliative Care team and she was very appreciative of the excellent care, compassion and extreme professionalism. Not alone did the team care for Cáit, but they also looked after her family, which will never be forgotten. The new building will be a huge comfort to cancer patients and their families as it will allow for very sick people to have access to a 12 bed Inpatient Unit which will provide an amount of specialist palliative care medicines and expert care. The family are hoping to raise as much money as possible and also to raise awareness of the fantastic work that the staff are already doing on a daily basis to care for the terminally ill. The prizes are as follows: 1st Prize Belgian Blue Heifer, donated by Gerard. She is due to calve a Limousin in September and both the heifer and the calf make up first prize. If the winner does not have a herd number, they will receive the cash value. 2nd prize is A two night stay in the four star Dingle Skellig Hotel.

Tig uí Mhurchú

3rd prize is a food hamper to the value of €100. The raffle will be launched at The West Kerry Agricultural Show on Sunday the 10th of July 2016, where the heifer herself will make a guest appearance! The draw will take place at Dingle Mart on Saturday the 5th of November 2016 at the In Calf Heifer Sale. Tickets are €5 each or 5 for €20 and will be available to purchase from family members and also at many locations in West Kerry. Contact can also be made with the family through their Facebook Page “Kerry Hospice In Calf Heifer Raffle”.Please support this very worthy cause as generously as you can.

They should be surrounded in a concrete base which shall be poured directly against the sides of the excavation. When completed they must be upright. Timber post may be driven in to ground with a suitable post driver, or erected as above. Forest Certification Recently the importance and value of forest certification was highlighted at the National Conference on Forest Management Certification in Ireland, in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, earlier today. The theme of the conference, was ‘Forest Management Certification for the Private Grower in Ireland’. The Agenda for the Conference included presentations on the way in which certification works and the need for it from the perspective of processors and the international market. Forest certification systems are designed to verify that forests are managed according to the principles of sustainable forest management. Sustainable forest management is recognised as essential in order to maintain the productivity, biodiversity, regeneration capacity, vitality and potential of a forest. All stages of forest management require careful planning and consideration. All these activities, from preparing a site right through to replanting after clearfell must be done in accordance with Best Forest Practice and environmental guidelines, all of which are well documented. Certification provides the mechanism for proving that these high standards have been applied. It provides the evidence supported by a formal internationally recognised process to show that forest operations have indeed been carried out to the required standards. Certification represents a sound approach to forest management that combines the highest environmental standards with practices that will maximise the financial return to forest owners from their investment. Furthermore, it protects this investment by ensuring that the timber that ultimately will be produced will have access to the market in the years to come” and added, “the time is approaching whereby private growers will recognise the economic necessity of such certification. The question for private forest owners may not be the additional income to be earned from certified timber but rather whether the market has the capacity to take and use the timber if it is not certified. Animal Welfare Organisations Funding Applications Open The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr. Michael Creed TD, today announced that his Department is inviting applications from animal welfare bodies throughout the country for ex-gratia funding. it is important that the government acknowledges and supports the great work being carried out by the welfare bodies in protecting animals in need and I am delighted that the Department is in a position to provide financial support to these organisations in 2016. The funding is only intended to be a contribution to the overall funding of organisations and that these organisations must provide the bulk of their funding requirements through their own fund raising initiatives. The Department will continue to work closely with animal welfare groups in the promotion of animal welfare. Extension To Knowledge Transfer Advisor Registration Deadline The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D. today announced that the original 30th June deadline for registration of farmer participants in Knowledge Transfer Groups will be extended until 14th July. Knowledge Transfer is included under the Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020 and will involve the formation and administration of knowledge transfer groups across a range of sectors. Funding of €100m is allocated under the RDP for Knowledge Transfer Groups across the dairy, beef, equine, sheep, tillage and poultry sectors. Knowledge Transfer Groups will be delivered to farmers by qualified facilitators, with the first Groups already approved to hold meetings. While farmers will be required to attend 5 Knowledge Transfer meetings in each of the 3 years of the Groups, a central element of the design of the Groups is the requirement for farmers to complete an individualised Farm Improvement Plan (FIP) in conjunction with the Group facilitator. In response to stakeholder feedback a number of modifications have been made to the scheme design. Firstly, it is open for a farmer to arrange for an approved nominee to attend in his/her place should the need arise. Secondly, it is open for farmers to attend two Groups in different sectors – for example, one beef Group and one sheep Group. Given the overlap between the content of the Groups across sectors, such dual participation will attract a 50% payment rate for both the facilitator and the farmer in respect of the second Group joined. Each KT Group generally consist of between 12 and18 members. Each participating farmer will receive an annual payment of €750 in respect of successful completion of each year of a Knowledge Transfer Group. Louis Murchan: 087-2857938

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

the tourist trade is very slow this year due to the bad weather last year and that people are opting for sunnier climes.

Tuesday, July 8. American ambassador Heckler officially opened the Ballyferriter museum today and, by all accounts, there was a good turnout at the event.

By Ted Creedon Monday, June 30, 1986. Gave an illustrated talk on the archaeology of the area to a group of American visitors in Benners Hotel. The hotel is very old fashioned and a bit cramped for such events but the visitors enjoyed it and paid £25 for the hour. Francois Jouas-Poutrel, from Paimpol in Brittany, was in Dingle for the Brendan festival with his girlfriend and they called to the house last night for a chat. He is a lighthouse keeper and kindly offered us the use of his house for a holiday while he’s on lighthouse duty.

Tuesday, July 1. Got an invitation in the post to the launch of the Dingle Archaeological Survey book by President Hillary on July 18 which includes a lunch invitation in Dún an Óir Hotel prior to the book launch in the Ballyferriter museum. The Supreme Court in America has ruled that the Constitution does not protect homosexual relations between adults in their own homes. Footballer Gary Lineker has become the most expensive English player following his £2.75m transfer from Everton to Barcelona.

Two Australians were hanged in Malaysia this week after being convicted of drug trafficking - the first non-Asians to be executed under Malaysian law. Desperate pleas from Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, the Pope, Margaret Thatcher and others, for clemency, were ignored.

Sunday, July 13. Took the family to the Forge restaurant in Dingle for Sunday lunch. The restaurant is owned by the Fenton family and is built on the site of the old blacksmith’s forge in Holy Ground. The place filled up quickly after we arrived - mostly visitors but some locals too. We all had chicken and chips plus Cokes followed by delicious chocolate ice-cream. The bill came to £18. Drove to Ventry for the annual regatta but it was too foggy to hold the canoe races and too cold to wait around so we came home early.

Monday, July 14. Letter from a Brendan Moran at RTE television about a new series on the environment which will start in the autumn and wondering if there were any projects of interest happening in the area.

Tuesday, July 15.

Wednesday, July 2. The American Ambassador, Margaret O’Shaughnessy Heckler is to officially open the Ballyferriter museum next Tuesday. I’m sure the security people will be insufferable. Some 300 people have been invited - the village should do well out of it all. The Chernobyl disaster continues to affect farmers in Britain. Some three million lambs cannot be slaughtered because of contamination from radioactive rain.

There are stories that the Co-op’s glasshouses are in trouble and it’s the same story in the sector everywhere in Ireland this year. Despite having higher than expected crop yields the returns were not there in the early part of the season largely due to the Chernobyl disaster and the fact that people were afraid to buy fresh produce. Took the kids to see ‘Back to the Future’ in the Phoenix cinema tonight great entertainment for kids including us big ones.

Just one day after Gary Lineker’s milestone transfer deal Ian Rush sets a new transfer record of £3.2m from Liverpool to Juventus.

Thursday, July 3. The widening of the bad bend at Ballintaggart has been a major improvement to the Black Spot and we shouldn’t see many more accidents there. A number of advertising signs have been erected recently at Beenbawn cross which are spoiling the fine view of the harbour at that point. Petrol prices are coming down again by 7p per gallon. It’s a ridiculous seesaw economy when the Govt will increase the price again at some opportune moment - probably just before a bank holiday weekend.

Saturday, July 5. Wet and miserable - steady rain from morning to 8pm. Had two ‘Dingle’ poems framed at Commodum crafts in the Green Street arcade - they are the agents for the framers who live and work in Annascaul. The frames cost £10.50 each. Left 20 of the poems in to Hennessy’s art shop on Strand Street. Have sold over 300 copies of the ‘Dingle’ poem in two years.

Sunday, July 6.

Goat Street Social Goat St., Dingle

Took the kids for a drive around Slea Head before lunch. Watched an unexciting Men’s tennis final from Wimbeldon between Germany’s Boris Becker and the Czech Ivan Lendl which Becker won in three sets to keep the title that he won last year at the age of 17. He was ranked number 4 going into the championship while Lendl was ranked number one.

Monday, July 7. Went to Fitzgerald’s to get paint for the exterior of the house and the front wall. Decided on a pale cream with dark chocolate for contrast cost £70 for 25ltrs. The bad weather continues so not suitable for painting. Locals are saying 14 West Kerry Live

Library News

The View From The Gáirdín

From July 2016, Kerry Library will join the new national library computer system.

Where are you from? Lispole

Name: Mary Herlihy (95 years young)

What this means, is that Kerry will be joining forces with other participating county libraries (Clare, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow) to provide a single, common membership. This will bring a number of changes to your library membership. If you’re a member in Kerry, you can use your card in any library in a participating county. If you’re in Limerick, you can use your Kerry Library card to borrow items, and you can even return them your local branch in Kerry or the mobile libraries. We will also have one integrated catalogue, so you can search and request items from any participating library and have them sent to your local branch for you. (You will not be able to request items from the four Dublin libraries until 2017). There will also be an increase in the number of items you can borrow and request. From mid July, you can borrow up to 12 items, and request 12 items at once. For teachers, the block loan allowance is now 40 items. We will no longer have a record of items you have previously borrowed; but if you log-on to your library account using your library card barcode and PIN, you have the option of keeping your reading history. If you don’t have a PIN, or have forgotten it, please ask library staff for a new one. •

Notifications will be sent by email instead of text; so if you have an email address, please let us know.

Under the national system, fines will now be 5c per overdue item per day.

• You won’t need to get a new library card, but it is very important to bring your library card with you each time you visit the library. If you don’t have a card, please ask for a new one.

What are your interests? Playing cards, singing, dancing, talking. Why do you like coming to Gáirdín Mhuire? The craic. What might surprise us about you? When I was young we used to catch blackbirds & thrushes to eat. We used to made cribs to catch them. Once caught we’d skin, gut & roast them. They were very tasty! Also during WW2 I worked in a flax factory in Northhampton making soldiers uniforms. At night there were blackouts as the bombers passed Mary back in the day overhead on their way to Kettering. I was never afraid.

The switchover is expected to happen on the 12th July and make take up to three days to be complete. While that is happening, we won’t be able to sign up new members, and you will only be able to borrow items with a library card. This is a brand new system, so there may be some teething problems. Please be patient with us.

We have called this event Solar “The Ring of the Atlantic Gold Coast”. The Tom Kennedy cycle is aimed to raise money for local charities and or local projects every year. For this Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide the initial year we chose a wonderful charity hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas orCommunity electricity. To find out more and totrade register log ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, into: you askThe how! Ring of the Atlantic gold coast cycle Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take- into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn Dowd 087-6720848 ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 tofacebook/dowdyman 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com

KDYS Streetfeast Alfie Hughes The KDYS is a charity supporting young people since 1971. The KDYS is engaged with over 6,000 young people around the County of Kerry. There are over 100 staff and 500 volunteers involved with the KDYS. On Thursday the 23rd of June, KDYS Killorglin hosted their second Street Feast at their Centre on Lower Bridge St Killorglin. Over 100 people attended on the day. Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland in June, hosted by you and your neighbours. They can be anywhere really - out on the street, in a local park or in your front garden. There are lots of good reasons to have a Street Feast, but it's really just a great excuse to eat great food, celebrate your local community Lots of local businesses were invited as well as community groups, agencies, teachers and the general public. The KDYS wanted to highlight the good work they are doing in the community and also say thanks for all the local support they have received over the years. The event itself was wholly organised by the KDYS Youth Committee who did all the planning and organising. Posters, flyers, and

promotion along with all the decorations and ideas came from them. They supplied Cakes, treats and savoury food on the day as well. The Youth Committee won the Kerry Community Award in 2014 for their efforts in the local area. The support this year from local businesses was overwhelming. Big Bite pizza donated huge family pizzas, Quinlan’s Fish shop gave goujons and chips, Micko’s gave sausages and pizzas. Both the Harmony and Dream Chinese restaurants gave large portions of appetizers and tasty bits. Jack’s bakery gave sweet treats and Supervalu and Eurospar gave lots of goodies. Last but not least, Eamonn Sheehan’s butchers donated 80 delicious burgers to make the BBQ a great success. Outside the Centre in the new KDYS Garden, the BBQ and music was great fun along with the free face painting and games. Inside, the Youth Committee had their work on display, showing pictures of them helping the Killorglin Tidy Towns, running Cake Sales and organising Youth Disco’s. Inside and out were fully decorated with balloons and colour. The Spud Mor competition, now in its second year, was held on the day also. Again this could not have been done without the help of Declan Crowley from the Grow It

Yourself (GIY) group. A number of local Spud Growers entered on the day, along with 2 other new categories included this year, the Secondary schools and Primary schools to find the best Spud in Mid Kerry. The Primary schools winner was Scoil Mhuire, Sunhill, Killorglin. ISK School won the Secondary schools category and Alfie Hughes won the independent growers along with the overall Spud Mor. He has said he would be willing to take on the West Kerry champion if they were up for it. We would hope that the Spud Off could be rotated between Mid and West Kerry on an annual basis to bring the communities closer together and just have some great fun. The KDYS would urge schools and community groups to get their spuds planted in the finest Mid Kerry soil by St Patrick’s Day next year and take on West Kerry.

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne would like to thank everyone who supported them recently at the launch of their new free bilingual Online Services and Mobile App and in their celebration of 25 years in business. Raidió na Gaeltachta started off the day with a live broadcast from the offices of the Credit Union in Dingle with a lively and informative programme. Present and past board members and founding members of the Credit Union contributed to the programme. Local members also spoke with great praise of their dealings with Corca Dhuibhe Credit Union. The manager Micheál Ó Cinnéide outlined the benefits of the new online services and mobile app to the Credit Union’s members and explained that the app is available in Irish also and that Comhar Creidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne are the only financial institution in Ireland to provide this service in Irish. Kerry senior football manager Éamonn Fitzmaurice officially launched the new services and also managed to sign some autographs for local children. Entertainment was provided by young local musicians and with an ice-cream van parked outside the Credit Union’s main entrance and inside the all-important face-painting service, children were delighted with their afternoon and they didn’t go home empty-handed either as they collected their piggy banks from Credit Union staff. Any member wishing to register to use the new online services can do so by logging on to www.cccdteo.com or by calling in to talk to any member of staff. New members are always welcome and there are

Dingle Historical Society presents

The Digital Mapping of Ireland’s 18th Century Barracks: The Munster Story

Book your Stand Up Paddle board tour of the Dinnle Peninsula NOW!

A lecture by Dr Ivar McGrath, UCD School of History Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle

Thursday, 14th July, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome This lecture focuses upon the Munster component of a current UCD research project aimed at mapping the eighteenth-century residential army barracks in Ireland and assessing their social, economic, cultural, environmental and political impact upon the country. The commencement of the building of a countrywide network of barracks in Ireland in the late 1690s was a wholly new and innovative approach to dealing with the age-old problem of maintaining a standing army in both peace and wartime. The Irish model was to set the example for the rest of the British empire, as the utility of such residential military complexes became more apparent to both the state and the general public. As part of the project, a pilot website has been created which will be utilised during the lecture. The website is available at http://barracks18c.ucd.ie/. The lecture will look to offer some insights into the project itself, the nature of the barracks built in Munster, and the wider purpose of the website.

Wild SUP Tours is reeistered with the Irish Surfinn Associaaon as a fully insured SUP School.

Ivar McGrath is a senior lecturer in the UCD School of History. The original idea for mapping the barracks of eighteenth-century Ireland emerged out a chapter on the subject in his 2012 book, Ireland and Empire, 1692-1770 (London, 2012). There may also have been a residual hangover from his previous career prior to becoming a historian, given that he spent three years serving as a private soldier in the Irish army in 1983-6, including six months with UNIFIL in 1984-5. He has published widely, including The Making of the EighteenthCentury Irish Constitution: Government, Parliament and the Revenue, 1692-1714 (Dublin, 2000), articles in The English Historical Review, Irish Historical Studies, Parliamentary History, Eighteenth-Century Ireland, and co-edited works as follows: Converts and Conversion in Ireland, 1650-1850 (Dublin, 2005); Money, Power and Print: Interdisciplinary Studies on the Financial Revolution in the British Isles (Newark, 2008); and People, Politics and Power: Essays on Irish History 1660-1850 in Honour of James I. McGuire (Dublin, 2009).

Getting Ready For That Half / Full Marathon!

ommend a company/brand as once again you need to find which ones work best for you. But again a principle we use is always food first.

Shane Finn

4. Recovery: Train hard, recover harder. Recovery from training sessions begins the minute that you finish a run. For example you are to run 10 miles. Run 10 miles but run another half mile at a slow pace to cool you down. Stretch and foam rolling as soon as possible while sipping on water and/or a recovery drink is a good idea. Recovery is something that is hugely neglected especially after long runs. Ideally have your post training meal prepared before you head out training. Continue foam rolling and stretching even in the hours after your finished running. Try compression clothing to see if it works for you, it can encourage and assist with blood flow and removal of any lactate

With the Dingle Full & Half Marathon fast approaching here are some good tips you can implement into your training to help get ready for the big day! Enjoy the process. You don’t have 1. to run, you get to run. Enjoy the benefits physically and mentally. Enjoy being with like-minded people and enjoy the great outdoors. The hardest part of any half or full marathon is the training, the race is the reward. Put in the work & miles in training and you will have a good race! The Long Run. This is one of the 2. training sessions in your schedule that you don’t want to miss. No matter how hectic your week is, try to make sure to tick the box for the long run. For most, the Long Run isn’t about speed or pace. It’s about getting out on the road and running constantly for a long period of time. This is also known as “time on your feet”. It gets the body ready for the stress and demand of the 26.2 miles. The Long Run usually ranges from 20 to 22 miles. It is very important that you practise any nutrition strategies that you may be planning for your marathon in your long runs. For example, timing of gels. It’s a good practise to take a gel after a certain amount of time all the way through the race. For example taking a gel every 30/35 minutes. However everyone is different and you need to find what works best for you.

build up in sore legs. Again test these out, see if they work for you! 5. Easy does it: Its vital as you train hard for your half or full marathon that you listen out for the signals that your body is sending you. It is smart to have an easy day every now and again. Not every training session has to be all an all-out effort, take an easier day and save your legs for a quality session later on in the week perhaps! Your body will thank you for it & you will reduce your risk of getting injured too! Shane Finn runs WKFitness in John Street, Dingle with Mark Evans. (066) 915 0606

If you have a specific goal or time in mind you will need to focus on your pace a little more in the longer run. For example if you want to run 8:00 min miles on race day but you run 9:00 minute miles on your long run’s, you will find it very tough to hold 8:00 for a full marathon in particular! If you would like some more information or help with your pacing strategy we would be delighted to help you out! Fuel for success. As the miles 3. add up, the food you eat and the quality of the food you eat becomes more important. We highly recommend you eat high quality nutrient dense food. Fill your diet with good carbohydrate, protein and fat sources. You burn a huge amount of calories running, whether it’s a speed/tempo session or out for a long run. Those calories need replacing. Eat and refuel as soon as you can after training sessions, it also may be worth looking at recovery drinks. It’s really hard to rec-

Other Voices : Dates and New Sponser Announced At a recent event in Dingle, eir announced that it has come on board as the principal sponsor of the 2016 eir Other Voices Festival, which will take place from December 2nd - 4th this year. Commenting on the announcement, Jon Florsheim, Managing Director, eir Consumer, said: “The eir Other Voices Festival holds a special place in the heart of all those who love music. Over the years it has played an important role when it comes to fostering and showcasing talent from Ireland and overseas, including household names such as Hozier and Amy Winehouse. The line-up this year will be exceptional, with native talent Rusangano Family confirmed to perform and many more exciting acts to be announced. From an eir perspective, we decided to become involved as it allows us be part of something big; something very exciting. People want to share great content and that’s always our motivation, no matter what sponsorship we’re involved with”. eir has invested €24m in rolling out its fibre broadband network across county Kerry. At Other Voices, the eir partnership will be utilised to bring high quality live streaming of performances to national and international audiences as exclusive content is shared on social platforms. Founder Other Voices, Philip King, welcomed the partnership. “Over the past 14 years of the Festival, we have been privileged to bear witness to spectacular performances from The National, Ellie Goulding, Villagers to Damien Rice, Little Simz, Jessie Ware, The XX, Lisa Hannigan and Rufus Wainwright. We have always lacked good quality high speed broadband and often we had to drive during the festival weekend to Tralee to upload content. Now through this partnership and the revolutionary technological expertise of eir, we can reach out to a larger audience than ever before enabling them to enjoy moments of musical history as they are made. We are bringing people from around the world to the intimate setting of St. James’ Church.”

ACTIVE 55’S FITNESS COURSE AT WK FITNESS CLASSES TAKE PLACE EVERY MONDAY AT 5PM AND FRIDAY AT 9AM

Exercise is of vital importance to people who are aged in their fifties & over! We have highlighted some of the benefits below! To date we have experienced fantastic results with some of our older members, these include a reduction in back pain/stiffness, reduction in shoulder & hip pain/stiffness, increased flexibility, reduced blood pressure. One member in particular is completely free of osteoporosis a couple of months into her basic strength program!

Here are some benefits of physical exercise for older folks:

No time was wasted getting kicked off following the first committee meeting on Wednesday 22nd June when it was decided to revive the official name of the tidy towns group which has fallen into disuse, namely Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group. Then the village volunteer tidy-up resumed on Monday 27th. A great wee gathering of folk cleared the cobblestone area on Main Street opposite Teach Séan's and adjacent to Patcheen's. As you can see from the photographs it was a cheerful occasion and a group of Australian visitors stopped by to say hello and declared themselves well impressed by this civic effort. There was a repeat performance on 4th July at the flagstones next to the Tom Crean Memorial Park with this time a visitor from Salt Lake City stopping to say hello. The tidy-up crew to which everyone is welcome will meet every Monday night outside the village hall and start off at 7pm with an 8pm finish. Come along and bring any gardening tools that you have. However we can supply them if necessary. A pair of gloves would be handy if you have them. It's not tough work and a few laughs are had too. ATTAG has now launched a Facebook page facebook.com/annascaultidytowns . This is the official page and contact point for the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group. It will publish news of ATTAG, photos, information on local tasks that we are informed need doing and any other suggestions that you might have. It's the essential linking tool and forum for those who are interested in keeping the village in good nick. By underpinning the community effort to keep our place in a prime visual and horticultural condition, it can be enjoyed by residents and visitors together. So, if you have minute log in,give it a 'like' and share it with your friends at home and abroad so that they know that Annascaul continues to flourish due in part to this voluntary, cooperative effort.

• Improvement in Mental Health / depression / anxiety • Maintenance of lean muscle mass & basic strength • Improve basic strength levels to help perform everyday activities • Improve flexibility, reduce joint pain & stiffness • Regular physical exercise combined with good eating habits can help with Type 2 Diabetes • Exercise helps improve sleep quality • Improvement in bone strength (osteoporosis) • Prevention of increased body fat % with ageing and post menopause in women • Exercise can be a huge aid in lowering blood pressure • Its social! You can meet new people & have some fun too!

Excavations Online Suíomh idirlín www.excavations.ie Isabel Bennett

Don té a dteastaíonn uaidh breis eolais a fháil ar na tochailtí seandálaíochta a deineadh ina cheantar nó ina chontae féin in imeacht na mblianta, tá suíomh idirlín ann le tamall de bhlianta anuas www.excavations.ie a ligfidh do dhuine cuardach a dhéanamh ar na suíomhanna éagsúla. Tá cuntas ann ar nach mór gach tochailt a deineadh ó 1970 ar aghaidh, cur síos gonta ar na suíomhanna agus is minic pictiúr agus léarscáil ag gabháil leis. Is í an Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta a mhaoiníonn an suíomh idirlín seo, agus is an-áis é don té go bhfuil suim aige ina leithéid, chomh maith le lucht taighde acadúil nó gairmiúil na seandálaíochta. We learn much about what our ancestors did in the various places they inhabited, worshipped at or were buried in, through archaeological excavations. In general the results of these excavations are usually eventually published, but often this happens within journals that have a limited distribution, or in publications that are too academic for the general reader.

by Wordwell Ltd, and it is updated continuously. It depends entirely upon the individual excavators, or the companies for which they work, to ensure that the summaries of the sites investigated are uploaded. There are currently almost 24,000 reports available on the site, although many of these investigations will have produced negative results. However, these are just as important to the archaeologist, as a picture is being built up of where in the country people did live in the past, and what areas were not so favoured. In some instances, more detailed information can be found about some sites on the Archaeological Survey of Ireland mapping database, at http://webgis.archaeology.ie/ historicenvironment/. Have fun exploring! To find out more about archaeological sites on the Dingle Peninsula, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, www.westkerrymuseum.com. And to celebrate its 30th

But we are all interested in the results of these explorations, and particularly so if they happened in our own area, or in places that we perhaps lived in in the past. We are always interested in how our forbearers lived! So where can you go if you want to find out more about sites that may have been dug in our own home areas, or even to find out if such excavations have ever taken place? For many years now a searchable website, www.excavations.ie, has been available, containing brief summaries of most of the excavations that have been carried out since 1970 in the entire country. More recently the site was upgraded to allow for maps and images, making it a most useful resource, both for the academic and the interested lay person. This is your one-stop-shop to search for your home area (or a particular artefact or site type, or all excavations carried out in a particular town, or in a particular year….there are any number of ways to search the site!)

Note:The above notice in respect of adjustments to repayment rates will not apply during any period when the loan is at a fixed rate. If you or your dependants intend to use the property as a principal place of residence, you must show evidence of mortgage protection insurance, unless you are exempt under the Consumer Credit Act 1995. A typical €100,000 20 year Variable interest rate mortgage for an Owner Occupier Residential Property with LTV greater than 80% will have monthly repayments of €618.44 APR 4.33%. If the APR does not vary during the term of the mortgage, the total cost of credit i.e. total amount repayable less the amount of the mortgage, would be €48,425.60.The effect of a 1% increase in interest rates for such a mortgage will add €54.13 to monthly repayments. Anterior Knee Pain in Adolescents : Osgood-Schlatter disease (growing pains) Eddie O’ Grady Osgood-Schlatter disease is an inflammation of the bone, cartilage and/or tendon at the top of the tibia (shinbone ie. just under the knee), where the tendon from the kneecap(patella) attaches. It presents as a painful lump just below the kneecap. It usually strikes active adolescents during growth spurts which can begin any time between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls, 10 and 15 years in boys, basically during puberty. Growth spurts make kids vulnerable because their bones, muscles, and tendons are growing quickly and not always together at the same time. With exercise, these differences in size and strength, between muscle groups can place unusual stress on the growth plate at the top of the shinbone, just under the kneecap (A growth plate is a layer of cartilage near the end of a bone where most of the bone’s growth occurs. It is weaker and more vulnerable to injury than the rest of the bone). While Osgood-Schlatter disease is more common in boys, the gender gap is narrowing as more girls become involved in sports. Osgood-Schlatter disease affects as many as 1 in 5 adolescent athletes. Teens increase their risk if they play sports involving running, twisting, and jumping, such as basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, figure skating, and gymnastics etc. Most parents go to the doctor after their child complains of intermittent pain below the knee over several months. Signs and symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease •

pain that worsens with exercise

relief from pain with rest

swelling or tenderness at the bony prominence just under the kneecap

limping after exercise

tightness and tension in the muscles surrounding the knee (the hamstring sometimes but particularly the quadriceps muscles)

The pain varies from person to person. Some have only mild pain while performing certain activities. For others, the pain is nearly constant and can be quiet debilitating. The good news is that Osgood-Schlatter disease is far less serious than its name suggests. Though it is one of the most common causes of knee pain in adolescents, it is really not a disease, but an overuse injury intensified due to a sudden growth spurt. The condition is self limiting and usually resolves itself within 12 to 24 months, sometimes a lot less. A similar condition, ”Sever’s disease” occurs in children of the same age group down at the achilles tendon attachment, and presents as heel pain. Again the condition is self limiting and the same treatment protocols apply. While there is no evidence that rest accelerates the healing process, a reduction in activity usually reduces the pain. There is no need as such to rest completely. Pain should be the main guide as to the limitation of activity. Tightness in the quadriceps muscles may predispose to this condition. The athlete should commence a stretching program. Some massage therapy on the quadriceps can be tried. Pain also can sometimes be relieved by icing the painful area(ice in wet towel) for 10 minutes at a time. Correction of any biomechanical abnormality, such as excessive subtalar pronation(feet turn out while running) could also be considered. Osgood-Schlatter disease – Summary To sum up, this is basically a self limiting condition that adolescents generally grow out of (Brukner and Khan, 2011). Some stretching exercises for the quads(with emphasis on these muscles), hamstrings and calves along with modification of activities is generally the best and most cost effective course of treatment. Putting the Goodness back into Seedy! Irene Ní Fhlannúra In the mid-1500s, seedy was a term describing a fruitful, abundant, seedladen plant – full of promise and potential. By the mid-1700s, it meant shabby or run down making reference to the appearance of the flowers after they shed their seeds. Nowadays, seedy can be defined as sordid, undesirable and sleazy usually referring to people or places. Just how the word itself was downgraded from life’s potential to an offensive description of a darker nature possibly reflects our own cultural degradation or can simply be attributed to the evolution of language – whatever the reason, there is nothing seedy (in modern terms) about seeds! Seeds are the origin of nutrition, the promise of a sustainable food supply and a powerhouse of life-giving nutrients. They come in all different sizes, shapes and colours and can provide a complete food source, delivering all the key nutrients required for sustain life. A plant puts in a tremendous effort to create each seed and fills it with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, proteins, essential fats and enzymes to ensure that seed becomes a fully-fledged mature plant, which in turn will do the same all over again!

A seed is life – it is a living food. By roasting or refining a seed, its classification moves from a living food to a dead food. There is no seed on earth that can withstand roasting or heating without breaking down its nutritional components. In a raw state – whether whole, sprouted, mashed or milled it is a wonderful addition to our diet and certainly gives new meaning to being seedy! • • Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 066 9151360. What are Seeds? Technically speaking, grains, nuts, beans, kernels and what we term, seeds are actually all seeds! Grains typically are the seeds of cereal grasses, nuts - the seeds of trees, beans are seeds from legumes and seeds as we know them can be from a variety of plant types and this is where it gets confusing! If, like me, you were once told that if you swallowed apple seeds, an apple tree would grow out your ears you may be cautious about eating any seeds. At what point did we decide that adding flaxseeds to our porridge was a good idea yet orange seeds not so much? Originally, much of our wisdom was passed down to us from our ancestors, a few of whom probably suffered a seed-inflicted injury along the way! We also learned a lot from other animals in Nature and did what they did. But mostly, we understood the nature of the seeds and understanding how they were designed to be dispersed was a crucial factor in deciding whether they were to be eaten or not. Most seeds that we now eat, have been tried and tested by those who have gone before us – humans, animals and birds all had a role in making seeds an important source of nutrition for all creatures. Modern nutritional science and botanical studies have discovered and classified edible seeds according to their properties and have given us humans many more reasons to include seeds in our daily diet.

Choosing Seeds It seems that there is a new seed on the block every week and it can be difficult to keep up with the Jones’ on this front. However, our tried and tested old reliables such as sunflower, pumpkin, flaxseeds (linseeds) and sesame seeds remain the most popular with chia seeds and hemp seeds hot on their heels. Broadly speaking, all these seeds share common nutritional properties that are beneficial to our health. They are a complete food, rich in protein, varying degrees of omega 3 and 6, vitamins A and E, and minerals such as zinc, magnesium and calcium. Most seeds on the shop shelves have been dried to preserve them. Fresh, moist seeds are susceptible to moulds, yeasts and bacteria that would ultimately destroy them. However, if harvested and dried carefully the majority of seeds can be sprouted given the right conditions, proving the potential for life remains intact. Dried seeds are generally ready-toeat as they are and are mostly consumed this way. Sprouting and soaking seeds unlocks a higher concentration vitamins and enzymes as the emerging plant requires greater amounts of nutrients to develop. Also, sprouting and soaking seeds improve the digestibility of the seed due to the tough seed coat being broken down through the germination process. This is particularly true of the tinier seeds such as chia, flax, hemp and sesame due to their impenetrable seed coat. It is better to grind your own whole seeds prior to eating them but if you must buy readymilled seeds ensure they are well-sealed, stored in a cool place and not exposed to light, as the oils are sensitive to both light and heat. Also, because of their high fat content seeds soak up pesticides like sponges so always choose organic seeds and seed products. 48 West Kerry Live

Visitors Welcome. Fáilte roimh cách.

Annascaul Singing Club It was the finest of musical nights at the June gathering of the Annascaul Singing Club. Song-sharing was the central element of the evening with members of the Dinglele Ukelele Band going through their repertoire and bringing everyone Photo: Evelin Peenar. along with them. The regular core members shared their own songs too with an enthusiasm that underlines what singing is all about, community and good energy. As the season kicks in we expect to see some new faces at Patcheen's in the coming months. Last summer we welcomed visitors from Europe, the US and the UK as well as from all parts of Ireland. Indeed we were fortunate to have Mary McCormack Deka visit in June. A storyteller and poet from Chicago she delivered her wonderful words with confidence and great charm to the delight of the assembled listeners. She has previously visited the area and was so taken with it that she was determined to come back, albeit four years later. So, wherever you hail from there will always be an open door for you at the Annascaul Singing Club. The next gathering is scheduled to take place at Patcheen's Pub, Main Street, Annascaul on Thursday 21st July from 9pm. Bring your songs, stories and poetry and join us round the fire. Or come in and have a listen if you feel so inclined. As usual it's free and it's fun.

Seniors: Thursday 7th July, Draw at 9:45 am. Ladies Club: Friday 8th & Sunday 10th July, Founders Cup, 18 Hole Stableford (GOY) Timesheet, Kindly sponsored by Marion Bourke. Men’s Club: Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th July, Founders Cup, 18 Hole Stableford, Timesheet Soccer Results: U17s result: Fenit 1 - 0 Castlegregory Celtic Fc. After a very hard fought and tight encounter a superb Fenit goal put an end to our U17’s cup run last Thursday in Mounthawk park. From the start both sides were very evenly matched and in fact Castle were unlucky not to have the lead in the first half when Dara Butler’s strike from the edge of the box was tipped onto the bar by the Fenit keeper. After a long break since the 1/4 final both teams took a while to get into the rhythm of the game but once they did they played out an enthralling encounter with some fantastic soccer played by both sides. For Castle Brian Dowling was man of the match with an outstanding performance along with his centre back partner David O’Brien and the irrepressible Michael Scanlon who really caught the eye. Overall, an excellent performance but a disappointing result for our boys after a long season. Best of luck to Fenit in the final. Sunday Market The market will be on every Sunday mornings from now until the end of August, doors open from 10am – 1.30pm. So if you are in Castlegregory over any weekend pop in to see us and say “hi”, have a browse and you never know - you just might find something you like. Bhí slua breá i láthair ag Craobh Chluiche sinsir caide na Mumhan i stáid an Ghearaltaigh ar an nDomhnach seo caite. Bhí bua gan aon mhór stró ag fearaibh Chiarraí ar bhuachaillí Thiobrad Árainn. Ba chúis imní do chuid acu a bhí ag féachaint ar an gcluiche i gCill Airne go bhfuair imreoirí Thiobrad Árainn scór chomh mór. Ach dúras cheanna go bhfuil an- fheabhas tagtha ar an Tiobradaigh ach tá cupla céim ar aghaidh eile rómpa fós. Is in aghaidh na ‘Jeaicíní’ a bheidh Ciarraí an chéad bhabtha eile agus is ansan a thabharfar an breac ar a bport, nó beidh gol agus gíoscán fiacla againn ar feadh bliana eile. An mbuafaidh Ciarraí ar Bhleá Cliath nó cad a cheapaimíd? Bhí an báideoir go diail an lá cheanna. An fhadhb is mó ag Ciarraí ná cosantóirí. Tharlódh go dtáthódh siad le chéile ar an lá ach i gcás aon dearmaidí, bheimís thíos leis. Tá fearaibh mhaithe ar fáil do lár na páirce. Tá súil againn nách droch ghortú a bhain do Cooper an lá cheanna. Bhí an Donchúch ar ais agus é go diail. An fear ab fhearr agus ní hé a haon é, ná Colm Geaney. Nuair a gheibheann sé an chaid is gnáthaí go gcuireann sé crích mhaith uirthi. Bhí sé go diail ar fad an lá cheanna. Cabhair mhór ó Dhonchú a bheith ar ais. Braitheadh amuigh é agus braitheadh istigh é ar an nDomhnach. Dar liom agus scata eile, go bhfuil na fearaibh againn a bhuafadh ar Bhleá Cliath ach iad a bheith tofa sna háiteanna is fearr a oirfeadh dóibh ar an lá, rud ná fuil éasca. San ráite siad Bleá Cliath rogha na coitiantachta agus chughainne atá iad a stop. Ambaice go bhfuil An Ghaeltacht ar bhóthar na bua fós. Thugadar an lá leo o nGallarus ar Ghleann Fleisce. Ní raibh teacht acu ar Bhrian ó Beaglaoi a bhí i mbun gaisce i gCill Airne ar an nDomhnach.

I. Ó Suilleabháin, Ó Murchú agus Mac Cárrthaigh.

‘Sí Eibhlín de Paor ó Údarás na Gaeltachta a réitigh an ócáid agus is maith chuige í. Bhí uirthi Féile Willie Clancy a thabhairt uirthi féin sara rabhamair críochnaithe. Duine eile a thug tamall ann ócaid Tomás Ó Céilleachair ó Chathair Bó Sine. Tá Tomás pósta le Áine Mulqueen agus is iontach an bheirt iad agus a gclann. Bhuaileas isteach chucha agus bhí tae agus cleachta againn. Bhí cupla cuairt eile meáite agam ach fuaireas glaoch a chuir in úil go raibh dualgas eile ag fanacht liom i gCorca Dhuibhne. Sea nách dial an saol a bhíonn ag daoine, agus is minic nách sásta a bhíd.

2. Ó Suilleabháin, Ó Conchúir agus Ó Murchú.

An tseachtain seo bhíos sa Rinn ceanntar a chuireann ardú croí orm coitianta. Bhí Seán ó Muineacháin ó Mhúscraí agus mé féin ag caint fé ‘Agallaimh Beirte agus conas tabhairt fútha. Mar dheire ar sin bhí ceardlann ina ndein grúpaí beaga a gceann féin a chumadh agus daoine aonair chomh maith, bhíodar go diail. Ortha siud a bhi i láthair bhí Róisín Ní Shíthigh ó Bhaile Eaglaise. Bhaineas an- thaithneamh as.

3. Ó Broin, Ó Ceallaigh agus Ó Dúill.

Tá cúpla seachtain siúlach churtha tharam agam. Ar dtúis bhíos i mBleá Cliath mar a raibh leabhar taibhseach ‘Portráidí Scríobhnóirí na Gaeilge, á sheoladh. Ní raibh fhios agam go raibh oiread riamh ann ach bhí slua breá ann agus bhíodar siúd a bhí gafa ‘g baile, sa leabhar. Tá pictiúirí a thóg Mairín Uí Mhaicín do gach duine dos na scríobhnóirí aguis cúntas gearr ar a n-eachtraithe agus a saothair i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla. Is baolach go raibh Máire slán mo chomhartha, tréis bháis tamall ó shoin ach bhí toradh a saothar ceamara fágtha mar oighreacht ag eagarthóirí an leabhair. Cupla lá ina dhiaidh sin bhí lá mór eile in Áras an Uachtaráin agus bhí san go taibhseach chomh maith. Bhí ionadaithe ó shaol na Gaeilge, ó Comharchumainn, drámaíocht gnó agus filíochta ann. Bhí turas ar chuid do Arus an Uachtaráin againn agus ansan blaise bidh bhlasta i bhfoirgneamh mór aice an Arais. Gan amhras b’é barra bua an lae na an chaint bhreá a thug an tUachtarán Mícheál D Ó hUigín. Mhionaigh sé go mbeadh sé ag cur brú gan stad ar na húdaráis ina shlí éifeachtach féinig agus ar na foinsi stáit a bhíonn ag plé leis an nGaeltacht, ‘agus leanfad leis’, ar sé. Gan dabht bhí fáilte agus moladh thar mholadh ar fáil don Uachtarán. Ard Fhear. Ní shin a dúirt rógaire a bhí in aice liom, nuair a gluais an tUachtarán isteach sa halla bhí dhá mhadra sásta meidhreacha á thionlacan. Sea, cad dúirt an rógaiire úd ná ‘ ‘caithfidh gur cuireadh na madraí le Michael’. Cúis gháire. An- Lá.

An tslat tomhais a bhí in úsáid acu sa phróiseas seo ná géilleadh i gcónaí don bhinneas, don liriciúlacht, don tsimplíocht agus don saibhreas teanga. Is órchiste luachmhar an leabhar seo a thugann léargas cuimsitheach don ghnáthléitheoir ar éagsúlacht agus ar áilleacht na héigse a cumadh i nGaeilge le míle trí chéad bliain anuas. Tá an leabhar dírithe ar léitheoirí na filíochta Gaeilge a thugann suntas do shaibhreas agus do fhairsingeacht na véarsaíochta a tháinig anuas chugainn ó ghlúin go glúin. Táthar cinnte de go gcuirfidh ‘Síoda ar Shíoda’ go mór lenár neolas agus lenár dtuiscint ar oidhreacht luachmhar ársa ár dtaisce filíochta agus go dtarraingeofar aird an phobail léitheoireachta arís ar cheardaíocht agus ar thábhacht na bhfilí Gaeilge agus ar an sárobair atá ar siúl acu i gcónaí.’ - Coiscéim Sa leabhar so tá nualeagan Gaeilge den dán SeanGhaeilge Pangur Bán a foilsíodh mar leabhar Béarla do pháistí le déanaí fén teideal The White Cat and the Monk.

State pensions and qualified adults Question I am retiring from work when I turn 66 and will be eligible for a reduced-rate State Pension (Contributory) of €198.60. My husband is getting his full State Pension (Contributory) of €233. He thinks we would be better off if he claimed for me as a qualified adult on his pension. Is he correct? If we do this, will all the money be paid to him?

home) is taken into account. If you have joint savings or investments with your spouse, half Project4:Layout 1 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 is taken into account. You also need to look at the tax situation. Your husband is entitled to claim a PAYE tax credit (€1,650) with his pension. Even though the Increase for a Qualified Adult is paid directly to you it is not a social welfare payment to you so you cannot claim a PAYE tax credit of €1,650. However if you claim a social welfare payment in your own right (for example, your

reduced-rate pension) you can claim a full PAYE tax credit. You should analyse both options carefully and do detailed calculations, taking all the factors that affect how much you receive into account. After you do the calculations, you may find that you are better off claiming the reduced-rate contributory pension in your own right.

Answer If your husband claims for you as a qualified adult on his pension, then his pension will consist of €233 plus an increase of €209 – a total of €442. The increase is automatically paid directly to you (although you can request that it is paid with your husband’s pension). If you decide to claim a reduced rate contributory pension then the total for you both will be €431.60. Therefore, it would appear that you are indeed better off being a qualified adult. However, there are other factors that you should take into account. While your husband’s pension is not means tested, the Increase for a Qualified Adult is means tested. This means that any income you have in your own right from employment, self-employment, savings, investments and capital (for example, any property except your own
