Dingle Junior Team 1971 Reunion O’Flaherty’s Bar in Dingle will host a very special event on Sunday 14th August at 5.30pm when the Dingle team of 1971 will be honoured. The team were crowned County Junior Champions 45 years ago and it is hoped that most of the team and mentors will attend the reunion to share colourful stories and memories of their successful campaign and other bygone deeds. All are welcome to attend what should be a hugely enjoyable evening. A souvenir programme will be available on the evening at a cost of €7. It contains an account of the 6 championship games and the trials and tribulations of that memorable campaign. There is a fascinating account of Dingle in 1971, biographies of the players and mentors and photographs from yesteryear to the present.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 9th August the film club at Dingle’s Phoenix Cinema will screen “The Meddler”. Starring Susan Sarandon as Marnie, an aging widow from New York City, the film follows her travails as she follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband passes away. With its charming and heartfelt look at family dynamics “The Meddler” is anchored by a wonderful performance by Sarandon as her character finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others. The following week on Tuesday 16th August the feature will be the comedy - drama “Maggie’s Plan”. In the film the titular, Maggie decides to have a baby on her own but her plan is derailed when she falls in love with a married man, destroying his volatile marriage to the brilliant and impossible Georgette. But one daughter and three years later, Maggie is out of love and in a quandary: what do you do when you suspect your man and his ex wife are actually perfect for each other? With shades of Woody Allen or the American comedies of the ‘30’s and ‘40’s “Maggies Plan is a smart, perceptive commentary on modern time 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Historical Society presents

La Juliana, a 1588 Spanish Armada Shipwreck off the coast of Sligo. Its Rediscovery and investigation by the Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU) of the National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. An illustrated lecture by Fionnbarr Moore, Senior Archaeologist, National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Lecture venue: Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle. Date: Thursday, 11th August, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome In April 2015 the Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU) directed a series of dive inspections in the general location of three Spanish Armada wreck sites at Streedagh, Co. Sligo. On inspection the wreck of La Juliana was clearly exposed on the seabed for the first time in thirty years with two cannon visible from the surface. On diving and further investigation of the site over the months of April, June and July 2015 the number of finds increased to nine bronze cannon, nine gun-carriage wheels, part of a gun carriage, two anchors and structural elements of the wreck itself. This talk will present an overview of the Armada story, in which the Dingle Peninsula also featured prominently and an illustrated summary of the excavation and artefact recovery along with initial observations on the significance of the finds. Also presented will be an assessment of the site dynamics as observed in the course of the UAU investigation, the post-excavation research, conservation by the National Museum of Ireland and proposed future management plans for the wreck sites by the National Monuments Service. Fionnbarr Moore is a senior archaeologist with the National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and is head of its Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU). He is chair of the European Archaeological Consilium’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Working Group and is also a Council member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (RSAI). He has contributed to a number of journals and books on underwater archaeology and maritime history and has directed a number of underwater projects. As well as the above he has a particular interest in the Early Medieval and Medieval periods and has published a number of papers on ogham inscriptions and on the results of major excavations at Ardfert Cathedral, Co. Kerry, which he directed on behalf of the National Monuments Service. He is currently directing the UAU investigation of the Spanish Armada wreck sites at Streedagh, Co. Sligo in collaboration with his UAU colleagues Connie Kelleher and Karl Brady.

Fresh Mackerel and Gooseberry Sauce

Astrid Janning Lic. I.S.H.

HOMEOPATH

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Gooseberry is one of those ingredients that there is no middle ground, you either love it or hate it. But when you use the sourness of the gooseberry to cut through the richness and oil in the mackerel the result are incredible. Fresh mackerel at this time of year should be plentiful. If you are one of the very few who don’t like mackerel I suggest you give it another go and especially when you pair it with ingredients such as gooseberry, rhubarb, mustard and pickled vegetables you will be begin to love it.

Dingle Tel: 086-229 6809

Serve this on top of a salad but let the mackerel be the dominant flavour. The compote itself once made can be kept in a jar for a week or so in the fridge and is ideal to serve as you would with a relish or a chutney with cheeses, cold meats or any where you feel you need to add a sharpness to a dish. Serves 4 Ingredients 2-3 Mackerel fillets per person

Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne Teo.

Rapeseed Oil Salt and Pepper 300g gooseberries, cleaned and topped and tailed 1 Red Onion finely diced The zest and juice of 1 lemon Dash of sherry vinegar 1 small heap flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 50ml of dry white wine Sea salt and pepper Method For The Compote Put a pot over a medium heat and a dash of oil, add the red onion and cook this slowly for about 5 minutes. Add the berries, wine, lemon juice and zest. Cook slowly of about 10 minutes. Add the sugar and vinegar; cook for five minutes more, then stir in the herbs. To Cook The Mackerel Heat a pan to medium heat. Season the fish well, once the pan is ready add some oil to the pan and immediately add the fish skin side down. Allow this to cook for about 2-3 minutes. Turn down the heat and turn the fish. Allow this to cook for another one minute or so. Add a squeeze of lemon to the pan. Add a generous spoonful of the compote beside the mackerel. Enjoy!!!

Farming News

How Much Fodder Do You Need In The Winter We are waiting for our summer to arrive, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. And we must use this time to ensure we have sufficient fodder to make it throught the winter It’s very important to know exactly how much fodder you will need over the winter months for the number of livestock that you intend to winter. You don’t want to be left half way through the winter period and run out of silage and then you are left at the mercy of the market at that time. It is very simple for every farmer to work this out at farm level. Winter fodder requirement calculator (pit silage @ 25%DM)

affirms Ireland’s role as one of WFP’s most engaged partners. Ireland’s multi-annual commitment facilitates efficient and effective assistance for hungry and malnourished people, particularly in war-devastated regions, bringing us one step closer to our shared goal of Zero Hunger. A provision of €100,000 was also announced in emergency funding for Ethiopian farmers, through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). These monies will fund urgent FAO work in distributing seeds to families in Ethiopia who have been experiencing one of the most severe droughts in 50 years, due to the effects of climate change. The contribution to this project will not only help affected households in Ethiopia to resume food production, but is part of the wider role my Department plays in initiatives on climate change and sustainable agriculture at both national and international level. El Nino has had devastating effects on food security in Ethiopia. It is critical to timely deliver seed support to the most vulnerable ahead of the main planting season – and with support from the Government of Ireland, FAO is enabling 2 800 farming families not only to resume agricultural production, but to safeguard their livelihoods.

Estimated silage yield (pit silage at 25%DM)

This example quickly tells the farmer going by these figures there will be a shortage of silage for their livestock over the housing period. To calculate the tonnage of silage in the pit there is a simple formula that can be used by every farmer. Multiply the length(L) by breadth(B) and the height (H) and divide by 45 and this will a tonnage figure. If the pit contains single chop divide it by 50. The Glas Traditional Farm Buildings Scheme Approval for the first building-restoration projects under the GLAS Traditional Farm Buildings Scheme recently took place. This is a small but very important scheme which will make a huge contribution to preservation of our rural heritage and the enhancement of the rural landscape and all of these buildings will be put back into some form of agricultural use ensured their ongoing relevance into the future. Nearly 60 projects are proposed for approval in this first round, with total associated grant-aid exceeding €800,000. A very wide range of projects are being supported, including restoration of traditional barns and byres, stables, walls, gates and gate-pillars. The GLAS Traditional Farm Buildings Scheme builds upon the success of a similar scheme under REPS4 (20072013) which saw over 350 buildings nationwide restored and over 140 previously unknown roosts of protected species discovered and conserved. Under the new scheme, grants are available to GLAS participants to carry out approved conservation works to traditional farm buildings and associated structures (historic yard surfaces, landscape features around the farmyard e.g. walls, gate pillars, gates). The principal objective of this scheme is to ensure that traditional farm buildings and other structures that contribute to the character of the landscape and which are of significant heritage value are conserved for agricultural use. Ireland Provides €20m Funding to UN World Food Programme and €100,000 Funding to UN FAO Emergency Fund The Department has provided €20,000,000 in humanitarian assistance to the UN World Food Programme (WFP). This UN World Food Programme feeds 80 million of the most malnourished people in 80 countries. It also plays a significant role in the UN’s global campaign for zero hunger, and is at the forefront of dealing with the migration crisis. This contribution will help save lives and support food security and nutrition and (re)build livelihoods in fragile settings. This support is particularly necessary in the context of the current refugee crisis, where large parts of our funding will be targeted. So if you think things are bad here, take a look further abroad, and you will see something much worse. But the good thimg is that we can help, and do. This contribution enables life-saving assistance for people living on the frontlines of hunger, conflict and climate-change, and it re12 West Kerry Live

€6.32M Eu Funding Secured For Agri-Food Research & Innovation Projects Under Horizon 2020 Agri-researchers from academia and companies in Ireland have been awarded a total of €6.32 million in the most recent round of EU funding from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme related to agriculture, food, marine and inland waters, the rural economy and the bioeconomy. The promotion and support structure for Horizon 2020 Societal Challenge 2 is led by the DAFM’s Research Section. Through national grant and awarded funding, Ireland has built up a talented and experienced agri-food and forestry research and innovation community and the Department, working together with Enterprise Ireland and others, assists them in identifying Horizon 2020 opportunities and in applying for EU funding. Assistance is also specifically targeted at newcomers with a view to preparing a cohort of new researchers and companies for the upcoming calls in 2017 and beyond. The funding awarded is spread across a number of projects, undertaken collaboratively by researchers in Ireland and a number of other mainly EU countries, and covers a broad spectrum of research and innovation activities in key areas of strategic importance. For example, it will support industry and academia to work together to reduce and create value from what was previously considered as food waste. It will also fund networks between researchers, advisors, farmers/foresters and other actors in the agri-food supply chain to enhance cooperation and stimulate knowledge exchange so as to optimise the transition to a knowledge-driven agriculture. Cross Compliance Sheep Tagging:- There are a few different scenarios when tagging sheep. If you buy in lambs from another farmer or from the mart and they are under a year old they will have one yellow mart tag in their left ear. If this is a lamb that you are going to fatten and kill in the factory or if you are going to sell on to another farmer before it is a year old, then you don’t tag this lamb in the right ear as was done previously. You just record the original tag number that is in the left ear on the dispatch docket when you are selling it. The full thirteen digits have to be recorded on the dispatch docket. If this lamb is a ewe lamb and you are going to keep it for breeding or until it is over a year old then this lamb must be upgraded to EID status. This means that you can leave the original left ear tag in if you want or you can remove it but you must record this number in your flock register and write down the new EID tag beside it. When you order your EID tags they come in sets one for the left and one for the right ear. The two tags are identical and the only difference is the one that goes in to the right ear must have the chip in it. These tags then stay in this sheep for life and are not be taken out no matter how many times it is sold. If one of the EID tags is lost then an exact replacement can be ordered or a totally new set can put into the sheep as long as the old number is referred to in the flock register with the new number. There is not the same requirement to tag sheep as they come on to your holding unless you are upgrading them to EID status. There is a lot of confusion among farmers of the exact proper procedure and Dominic Mc Glynn feels that the same system should be employed In the Republic of Ireland as is in place in Northern Ireland where they EID tag everything. This might come in time as the current system is too hard to manage for everyone. Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

by Sean Moran’s new house. Altogether it took one and a half hours to complete a journey that normally takes twenty minutes.

Wednesday, August 6. Reports of severe flooding in Tralee with a great deal of damage done to shops. Some people were stranded all night in the Siamsa Tíre building - others were rescued by boat in the town. Also, bad flooding in

By Ted Creedon

Killarney, Macroom and Bantry.

Wednesday, July 30, 1986. Weather is still bad. A very heavy night’s rain caused widespread flooding in the area. The fire brigade was called out to pump water from Thomasín Kane’s house in Lispole. However, the afternoon brightened up and it turned very warm. Took the kids to the phoenix cinema tonight to see the film D.A.R.Y.L. which they enjoyed.

Thursday, July 31. Quite a good day, breezy but warm and with long sunny spells in the afternoon. Took the kids for a walk across the racecourse to Beenbawn and back by the Bothar Dubh accompanied by our dog Lucky and our cat! It must have been an amusing sight for passing motorists to see a cat out on a family walk.

Friday, August 1.

The weathermen say that three and a half inches of rain fell in 18 hours and the flooding is the worst in over 100 years! At least 20 cars were abandoned near the cross for Dún an Óir hotel. Guests were ferried to the hotel by a local farmer using a tractor and transport box. The county is counting the cost in terms of losses for agriculture and tourism as well as damage to property and the long term impact for the tourist trade.

Thursday, August 7. The weathermen are now saying that four and a half inches of rain (114 mm) fell in the 12-hour period between 10am and 10pm on Tuesday. Many bridges were washed away in Kerry but, thankfully, no loss of life.

Friday, August 8. The first day without rain for many weeks.

The area was hit by a sudden violent storm early this morning with gale force winds and driving rain. The weathermen said it was more like winter with a depression of 976 over Kerry.

Saturday, August 2. Fresh and bright today but fairly cool. Dingle is very busy for the bank holiday weekend especially in the Holy Ground, Strand Street and waterfront area but Main Street is almost deserted by comparison. Lisbeth Mulcahy has opened a new craft shop in Green Street this week. It’s next door to John Moore’s shop but they should complement each other. Took the kids for a cycle to Flemingstown and stopped for a rest at Garfinny Bridge. The O.P.W. are keeping the place in good shape. If Jack Brosnan hadn’t shown me a photo of the bridge when it was cleared up years ago I wouldn’t have had the enthusiasm to ask the O.P.W. to take the bridge into State care.

Sunday, August 3. Stood outside the church in Ballyferriter before Mass to raise funds for the RNLI. People are not as generous as they used to be but then there’s always somebody collecting outside church doors these days.

The racecourse at Ballintaggart is almost ready for the weekend but no vehicles are being allowed into the field because of the rain. Two horses are being stabled in Tom Sheehy’s yard, namely Rosebud and Bigwood.

Saturday, August 9. The race committee have opened a gap in John Paul McDonnell’s field fence at Beenbawn Cross and the field is being used as a free carpark. There are traders and hawkers parked all along the road by the race field and the crowds began arriving around 2pm.

Sunday, August 10. Went for a swim at Beenbawn before dinner. The second day of the races and a very large attendance. It seems there was a big controversy after the main race. The winner had shed its weights just before the race and the owner was caught trying to replace them just before the awards. Anyway, a big row ensued. The horse was disqualified and, as they say, ‘there was murder’!

We had hoped to go to Bulls Head after dinner but it began to rain and stayed at it for the day so we watched some forgettable film on TV.

Monday, August 4. A good day for a change with warm sunny periods. Went for a swim at Beenbawn - water was cold but the warm sun made it bearable.

Tuesday, August 5. A most amazing day. It began to rain heavily in the morning and there was severe flooding in the area by the afternoon. I was giving Tomás Bowler a lift to Árd na Caithne but had to turn back because of floods on the road. Tomás went home on foot. There was more bad flooding at Gortadoo and only just made it through. Cars were abandoned at the next crossroad, mainly tourists trying to get to Dún an Óir hotel. The road to Ballyferriter was more like a river than a road. Had to push a car off the road at Ballyviheen - luckily I was wearing wellies. It was impassable at Burnham Cross - a minibus was stuck there and a car had water up to its bonnet. I turned back to Ventry and took the high road to Monaree. There was plenty of flooding but made it to Dingle. The Mall river had burst its banks. The fire brigade were pumping for all they were worth but it was having no effect on the water pouring into the town from the hills. Took the Garfinny road out of Dingle and down Davy’s Lane 14 West Kerry Live

One Good Championship Doesn’t Mean The Product’s In Good Health. Tadhg Evans I’ve moaned enough about the GAA’s moaners since I started penning these articles, so I hope you believe me when I say I feel bad that I’m about to moan about how nobody’s moaning all of a sudden. There’s much to be happy about right now. The gap between the top four or five teams in the country and the rest prior to this season was imposing, now it’s ordinary. One year ago, Monaghan would certainly have been considered amongst the top six teams in the country. Today, they’re probably still teetering from the ungracious thumps flung at their pride by little Longford during their second round qualifier at Clones. Tipperary evaded the discomfort of relegation from Division Three with little composure last spring, but since the ‘real’ football’s gotten underway, they’ve prospered, winning three matches against vaunted football counties to qualify for an All-Ireland semi-final. This accomplishment has been etched into history without the aid of some capable players who chose either foreign soil or hurleys over football for their summer months. Tyrone have improved markedly. Joe Brolly’s irritating us all once again with relentless declarations about how good they are, but we’ll pardon the difficult Derryman for now, as he’s not alone in thinking Tyrone can claim this All-Ireland. Clare offered meek questioning of Kerry’s worth on Sunday last, but that performance was a rare strand of disappointment in a park full of achievements cultivated by the Banner’s footballers this year. They won Division Three, and qualified for championship football at Headquarters for the first time in 24 years, so to request any more of them would’ve been excessively demanding. These are all developments that would’ve been infrequently forecasted prior to last New Year’s Day, and it’s nice that weird, wonderful things are happening again in the Championship, for a change. It’s marvellous, honestly… but every silver lining has its cloud. This year’s Championship is the reprieve that the GAA could not have deserved less, as the criticism of the organisation has been reduced though the problems have only subsided for the time being. We’re into August, and not many too many shouts have gone up for a restructuring of league or championship, though both are as urgently needed now as they were last year. The GAA’s accidentally stumbled upon a meadow full of primroses, fairies, unicorns, and other lovely, lovely things altogether, and all’s been forgiven by those with poor memories. But underneath the luxurious carpet, intercounty football is still in scutter. After the qualifiers were rightly introduced in 20 West Kerry Live

2001, counties like Westmeath, Derry, Sligo, and Fermanagh either won provincial titles or qualified for All-Ireland semi-finals in spite of being seen as minnows at the time of those achievements. But since the league adopted a four-tier structure in 2008, sensational happenings like that have been fitful. There’s been no ‘shock’ provincial champion since Roscommon claimed the Connacht title in 2010, and Tipperary will be the first Division Three team to play in an All-Ireland semi-final since the league was needlessly tinkered with eight years ago. But one possible sighting of a swallow is all the GAA’s needed to declare a summer, and now that the overachievers from Tipperary and Clare have been so kind as to pull the bag of weights off the association’s back, they needn’t be pestered about necessary change for another good while at least. Amidst all the celebration of Tipp and Clare’s achievements, we ought to remember that of next year’s Division Three and Four teams, only two (Tipperary and Westmeath) made it to the last-twelve of the 2016 Championship. So why no mention this summer of introducing a viable, worthwhile second-tier championship? The current structure is also as stupidly imbalanced as it’s always been. If Donegal make it to a semi-final, they’ll have done so having played Fermanagh, Monaghan (twice), Tyrone, Cork and Dublin – which would represent a ridiculously arduous route. Kerry have the opposite problem, having had a match against Tipperary sandwiched between games against Clare up to this point. The Kingdom is subjected to ridicule more than any other county, as often happens to the most powerful institutions, but while some have claimed that Kerry’s route is next to perfect, it’s actually a handicap that could spoil their 2016 ambition. If Kerry have to play Dublin, or even Donegal, in a white-hot semi-final, will a Kerry supporter really feel their county’s sufficiently prepared given that their three matches this summer have been against Division Three teams? This piece is not campaigning for the deletion of the provincial championships. They offer less formidable counties a reasonably good chance of winning respected silverware, and even giants like Kerry delight their supporters when they outperform Cork in a Munster final. But if unloved preseason competitions like the O’Byrne Cup were discarded with, then a longer, fairer championship structure that includes the provincial competitions and a meaningful second-tier championship could surely be accommodated. Ballyferriter’s big community day out is fast approaching and Rás an Bhuailtín will once again be the centrepiece of a fun day’s activities for the young and young in spirit. The fundraising race takes place on the 13th August at 10:30am. As usual, there will be the choice of a 10km run or 7km jog/walk on the most scenic of courses starting and finishing in the village of Ballyferriter. The first half of the route takes in breathtaking views of Mount Brandon to the right, beautiful Béal Bán beach, The Three Sisters and Ceann Sibéal (Star wars filming location!), while the home stretch includes An Fear Marbh to your right and Cruach Mhárthain for a finish! Information for the event is available on Facebook, search for Rás an Bhuailtín 2016. Race entry is €20 for individual adults. Families can register on the day for a cost of €30. Students and under 18s can also register on the day at a discounted price of €10. Registration for individual adults is available online at www.runireland.com, search for Rás an Bhuailtín. Places are filling fast and the first 100 to register online will receive a free t-shirt! Registration will be available on the Friday evening 12th August 20:00 - 21:30 and on the morning of the race from 8:30am - 10:00am at the new Comharchumann building in the village. After the race refreshments will be served at the school hall in Ballyferriter and childrens’ activities will include bouncy castles and face painting. There is no charge but donations are most welcome. In the past this race has helped to fund the wonderful playground in Ballyferriter and also helped fund activities for Cumann Caide na Gaeltachta (Bord na nÓg). The committee wishes to continue using this event and others to help build a local sports centre in Ballyferriter in the future. |s much as being a fundraising event this day out offers the local community and all visitors the opportunity to come together for a day of fun and chat. “We are fully aware that the new sports centre could never be built on the fundraising of this event alone, but we feel the day offers the community an opportunity to come together and mix with each other. As with all rural areas it can be difficult to create situations where people get the chance to come together, and we feel Rás an Bhuailtín allows this to happen” says Tomás O Muircheartaigh, Chairman of the committee.

Creative Sounds forged in New Zealand Set For Dingle Showcase St James’ Church, Dingle. Thursday 18 August, 7:30pm Tickets: €15 on the door. Limited capacity On the west coast of New Zealand in a creative and vibrant place called New Plymouth five artists met, made friends and collaborated together musically. Sive, Jon Sanders, Ben Dixon, Diarmuid Cahill, Samuel Hagmann and Anand Rose have continued their musical journey and are delighted to bring their creative sounds to St. James’ Church, Dingle on Thursday 18th August. Anand Rose a Tipperary man and musician based in New Plymouth has promoted theatre shows, tours and house concerts down under over the past decade, saw an opportunity to bring these artists together back home, "It was a great opportunity with everyone being over that side of the world to bring the New Plymouth music vibe to Dingle, a town with such a rich musical heritage and history." Sive is a singer songwriter from County Kildare, in December 2013, she featured as part of the music television programme Other Voices. Jon Sanders a tirelessly touring musician of both hemispheres, is a master of the bouzouki, he effortlessly weaves in and out of different world music flavours with his playing, taking you on a musical journey. He has developed a radical ukulele style that evokes the mesmerising ngoni (African harp) music of Mali in west Africa and its passage across the Atlantic to the blues Delta lands of Mississippi. Ben Dixon is a talented young singer songwriter from New Zealand, drawing from the likes of Neil Young, Tom Waits and the National. Ben has built up an arsenal of original material written on piano and guitar, that continues to evolve and expand daily. Diarmuid Cahill a Clonakilty man has carved out his songwriting career in New Zealand and has gone on to form a collaboration with two other songwriters called Glass Boat. Diarmuid has a great ability to write well penned songs crossed with catchy melodic hooks. Backing musicians on bodhrán Anand Rose and Samuel Hagmann, a trumpet player from Switzerland who has just recently moved home after being based in New Zealand. On the night each artist will take it in turn to lead, receiving the backing of the rest in a subtle decoration of finely crafted tunes, culminating in an all in finale that promises to send everyone home singing!

Richie Williams A belated congratulations to Ballintaggart native Alan Creedon whose raised in excess of twenty four thousand euro during his four hundred míle endurance challenge from Manchester to Dingle last month. Well the main action this week end will be in Ballintaggart for the annual Dingle Horse and Pony Races. We appeal to ever able bodied person to make the effort to support the races at least once over the three days as the volunteers behind the event put a huge amount of time and effort into keeping Dingle on the racing map every year. This Summer has again reminded us of the Parking Problems we have not solved and which seems to be getting worse every year. It appears that a number of smaller car or vehicle parks are needed off every street in town to cater for the ever increasing demand. However I do believe that the employees of various outlets who park for long periods in the town centre should be the first to change their habits and adopt better parking locations out of the main streets. After all Dingle is a small town and one does not have too far to walk to any location if one wants to contribute in a positive way to solve the problem. Yes everybody can help a little so why not start now!!!. Tidy Towns work evenings continue on Tuesday's meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. The weather has not been too kind for gardening so far but the colourful plants will hopefully get their chance in August or September. The cigarette buts litter problem has not been tackled despite our remind in the last edition.. We once again request all business owners to look outside their own premises and take a few minutes every day to improve our towns image for visitors and locals alike. Slán Tamall !!!

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Acorn Life U21 Kerry County Football Championship 2016 Final Dingle will meet South Kerry in the Acorn Life U21 Kerry County Football Championship Final in Austin Stack Park, Tralee next Tuesday August 9th at 7pm in the Acorn Life U21 Kerry County Championship Final. It was South Kerry that defeated St. Kieran’s who played their Semi Final on the 27th of July at 7pm in JP O’Sullivan Park, Killorglin, St. Kieran’s 2-9 to 2-14 South Kerry. This is a strong tough South Kerry Team that have plenty of footballing ability and Dingle will have to be at their very best to overcome them. If Dingle bring the same ruthlessness and control that they brought to their own Semi-Final win against Dr. Crokes a few weeks back the West Kerry side are a match for any team on their day. The West Kerry Board would like to wish Dingle U21 Management and Footballers the very best in the Acorn Life U21 Kerry County Football Championship Final. Beir bua agus beannacht! Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin Kerry County Minor Football Championship 2016 Quarter Finals Best of luck to the West Kerry Minors when they play Firies on Friday August 5th at 7pm in Lispole in the Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin Kerry County Minor Football Championship 2016 Quarter Finals. The Round 3 game between Dingle and Firies was played on Tuesday August 2nd at 7pm in Páirc an Ághasaigh and it was Firies that emerged victorious on a score line of Dingle 0-11 to Firies 2-12. The home side Dingle failed to perform in the opening half and trailed at half time, Dingle 0-3 to Firies 1-9. Even with the aid of the wind in the second half this was too much of a lead to give to a well drilled outfit like Firies. West Kerry Minors will have to ensure that they play football from the throw up and match Firies with the same physical intensity that Firies displayed against Dingle. The West Kerry Board would like to wish the West Kerry Minor Management and Footballers the very best in the Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin Kerry County Minor Football Championship 2016 Quarter Finals. Beir bua agus beannacht! • Mid Kerry v Kenmare District in Killorglin on 3rd August at 7pm •

An Díseart Ba é an Monsineoir Pádraig Ó Fiannachta a bhunaigh An Díseart siar i 1996 i gClochar na Toirbhirte sa Daingean. D’imigh Pádraig uainn ar shlí na fírinne ar an Aoine 15 Iúil 2016, méadú ar a ghlóire insna flaithis. Thacaigh na mná rialta ó thús leis an bhfís a bhí ag Pádraig chun go mbeadh Ionad Spioradáltachta & Cultúir Ghaelaigh sa Daingean don bpobal áitiúil agus do chuairteoirí. Beidh ré nua i ndán dúinn go léir agus don nDíseart anois. Bhí cruinniú ag Bord Díseart ar an 29 Iúil inar toghadh an tAthair Jim Sheehy mar Chathaoirleach nua agus Joan Maguire mar Leas-Chathaoirleach. Bíonn cuairteoirí de shíor ag teacht chun féachaint ar fhuinneoga taibhseacha Harry Clarke agus ar gháirdíní cumhra Díseart. Is cúis cheiliúrtha an áilleacht seo a bheith againn i lár an bhaile. An bhfuil a léithéid in aon bhaile mór eile in Éirinn? Beidh obair dheisiúcháin le déanamh ar an bhfoirgneamh. Beifear ag obair go dian chun éagsúlacht agus raon mór ócáidí agus cúrsaí ar ardchaighdeán a chur ar fáil agus le haitheantas ollscoile a sholáthar. Beidh súil ag an mBord forbairt a dhéanamh ar na háiseanna Tríú Léibhéal a thionscnaigh Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Leanfar leis na háiseanna a chur ar fáil do ghrúpaí a bhíonn á lorg. Is é an Dr. Tadhg Ó Dúbhshláine a bheidh ag plé le cúramaí foilsitheoireachta An Sagart. N’fheadar éinne ach an éacht foilsitheoireachta a dhein Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. Beidh súil ag an mBord leis go leanfar leis na ceardlanna scríbhneoireachta as a d’eascair na bailiúcháin filíochta a chuir Pádraig in eagar. Ba mhór leis an mBord buíochas a ghabháil leis an bhfoireann as a gcabhair agus as a gcomhoibriú ar feadh na huaire. Leanfar le hobair Díseart – a cuireadh tús léi fiche bliain ó shin. Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta founded An Díseart back in 1996 in the Presentation Convent. The Presentation Sisters supported the project to provide a centre of Celtic Spiritualaity and Culture for the local community and visitors alike. Pádraig passed to eternal glory on Friday 15 July 2016, méadú ar a ghlóire sna flaithis.

Wild SUP Tours is reeistered with the Irish Surfinn Associaaon as a fully insured SUP School.

A new era has begun for us all and for the Díseart. Fr. Jim Sheehy was appointed the new chairman at a meeting of the Board on 29 July and Joan Maguire is the new vice chairperson. There is a constant flow of visitors coming to look at the beautiful Harry Clarke windows in the Díseart Chapel and the surrounding gardens. Some repairs have to be carried out on the building. Huge efforts will be made to provide excellent courses and activities with University accreditation. The Board is very confident that it can build and develop the Third Level provision initiated by the late Monsignor. Facilities will continue to be provided to groups who require them.

SUMMER SALE

An Dr. Tadhg Ó Dúbhshláine will continue the publishing work of An Sagart. We are only beginning to evaluate the publishing legacy left to us by Pádraig Ó Fiannachta so vast was his scholarly work over many years. The Board would like to thank all who work inside and outside the house for their ongoing help and cooperation. The good work of An Diseart, which commenced twenty years ago, will continue.

is on now!

The Dingle Peninsula History Timeline/ Líne Ama Stair Chorca Dhuibhne

Art in Stone

Isabel Bennett Tá a fhios ag an saol go bhfuil stair ársa fíorspéisiúil ag Chorca Dhuibhne, agus nach bhfuil aon easpa séadcomharthaí seandálaíochta ins na goirt, ar féidir cuairt a thabhairt orthu. Tá na céadta leabhar curtha i gcló a bhfuil mórán eolais iontu ar stair agus ar scéal Chorca Dhuibhne. Tá Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne ann leis agus léiriú ann ar sheandálaíocht agus ar ghnéithe de sheansaol an cheantair. Ach, an raibh fhios agat go raibh áis iontach eile ar fáil, agus scéal stair na h-áite inti, agus í curtha le chéile ag cuid dosna saineolaithe is fearr atá ar fáil sa tír ó thaobh staire de? Is í an Líne Ama Stair Chorca Dhuibhne, atá i gceist agus tá sí ar fáil saor in aisce ar an ríomhaire ag http://dinglehistory.com/. Agus táimid go léir ana-bhuíoch do Joan Maguire (a bhíonn ag scríobh ar chúrsaí ríomhaireachta don iris seo, a thionscain an togra seo agus a stiúraigh é chun críche. Áis den scoth is ea í, don ghnáthdhuine chomh maith leis an duine atá ag lorg eolais níos doimhne. Tá sé dá-theangach, agus is féidir éisteacht leis na giotaí eolais, nó iad a léamh tú féin. Launched last year, the Dingle History Timeline is a most wonderful, useful (and user-friendly) resource available to all of us who might have an interest in the history and archaeology of the Dingle Peninsula. Though essentially community-driven, this project was the brainchild of Joan Maguire (of this parish), whose expertise in computers led her to have this project developed. Using known experts in the field of medieval and Early Modern History (Drs. Paul McCotter and Declan Downey), a timeline was developed into which you can dip, selecting the topics and periods about which you wish to learn more, all just a ‘click’ away. All of the entries are enhanced by the marvellous photography of Valerie O’Sullivan.

The timeline is bilingual, making it even more useful for students of the language as well as of the history of the area, with translations into Irish carried out by Breándán Mac Gearailt and Msgr Pádraig Ó Fiannachta. As an aid to those whose eyesight might be failing, or those who have difficulty reading, or just those who delight in having the luxury of being able to listen as well as to read – all of the earlier sections of the text are available aurally, read in the dulcet tones of Ted Creedon (again of this parish) for the English and Dairena Ní Chinnéide, Áine Bric and Brenda Ni Shuilleabháin for the Gaeilge. It is hoped to complete the readings in due course. The timeline currently brings us up to 1800, but there are plans to add further to this, and bring the whole project right up-to-date. If you haven’t had a look at this great resource, do so now – you will be amazed at the range of information available, and how fascinating it all is. Maybe you explored it when it was first launched? Well, now is a good time for another look, as the site is constantly being expanded. It may well be a unique resource, and we are certainly very lucky that Joan and her colleagues have devoted such time and effort into producing something that really deserves much wider recognition. http://dinglehistory.com/

History of SOL Our group formed following a pilot survey by the Kerry Japanese knotweed survey and awareness group on the River Laune in 2015. Up to that time their group had been surveying the roads on the Dingle and Iveragh peninsulas. While surveying the Laune it became apparent how badly affected the rivers had become. They were able to show on their map, using photos and GPS, that an entire one fifth of the length of the river was affected by Japanese knotweed. They then realised that the rivers and lakes that feed into the Laune would also need surveying. So a wider plan was needed hence the SOL group was formed. This brought together concerned groups and individuals such as, Tidy Towns, The Laune Anglers, Killorglin Beekeepers, The Rowing club, NPWS, Inland Fisheries, Astellas pharmaceuticals and Kerry Japanese knotweed survey.

To prevent further degradation of the natural heritage of the River Laune we needed to know the extent of the problem. We therefore widened our survey to include seven other invasive species affecting the river and tributaries. So with generous funding from the Heritage council of €6000, Kerry co co €1000 and Agenda 21 € 500 the SOL volunteers have to date surveyed over 150km of lakes and rivers by both canoe and on foot. They will continue on into September and all data is available on their 36 West Kerry Live

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach

An Lab, An Daingean. Dé Domhnaigh, 24 Iúil 2016 Cuireadh cloch eile fós ar charn laochra Éirí Amach na Cásca, Dé Domhnaigh, 24ú Iúil 2016. Bhí gliondar agus aoibhneas i ndán don tslua mór daoine a raibh sé d’ádh orthu freastal ar thaispeántas Dhiarmaid de Faoite sa Lab an tráthnóna úd. Is beag má bhí suíochán folamh san amharclann. Thug de Faoite léamh drámatúil ar Seacht mBua an Éirí Amach, cnuasach gearrscéalta de chuid Phádraic Uí Chonaire, a cuireadh i gcló don gcéad uair go gairid tar éis Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916. Agus a léithéid de chur i láthair drámatúil! Ní haon áibhéil a rá gur chuir an t-aisteoir fónta pearsanra na scéalta i láthair ina steilleabheatha. Bhraitheas gur bhuaileamar leo go pearsanta. Thairis sin dhein de Faoite Pádraic Ó Conaire féin a athbheochan agus a chur in aithne don lucht éisteachta. Ní beag san de theist ar ealaín de Faoite mar aisteoir agus mar léiritheoir. Tar éis an tsaoil bhí sé gan frapa gan taca seachas a ghuth cumhachtach, inchreidte féin. Chuir sé go mór le pléisiúr an taispeántais ceol veidhlín agus amhránaíocht a bheith á thionlacan. Ba í Nuala Ní Chanainn ceoltóir an tráthnóna. Bhí sí ag seinnt léithe go binn agus sinn ag teacht isteach san amharclann, rud a chruthaigh suaimhneas agus tnúthán ionainn. Agus tháinig an tuar faoin dtairngreacht. Is dlúthchuid den nádúr daonna an scéalaíocht ó bheadán agus mionscéalta ár saoil laethúil féin go dtí scéalta móra an lae ar na meáin chumarsáide agus shóisialta. Ó aimsir na scéalta Fiannaíochta riamh anall go dtí ár lá féin tá dúil againn sa scéalaíocht. Sa léamh drámatúil a dhein Diarmuid de Faoite ar Anam an Easpaig, Beirt Bhan Mhisniúla agus M’Fhile Caol Dubh gan ach trí scéal a lua, chuir sé raon fairsing mothúchán in iúl go báúil, go híogair agus go paiseanta. An greann, an t-údarás, an t-éirí in airde agus an t-athrú meoin in Anam an Easpaig, an misneach, an grá daonna agus tíre, an chomhthuiscint, an t-áthas agus an brón ag na mná misniúla, an chluain, an mhídhílseacht agus an cur i gcéill, agus an easpa céille agus sásaimh in M’Fhile Caol Dubh. Bhí an bheatha go léir ann! Is féidir linn go léir ionannú leis na mothúcháin sin. De réir dealraimh tá Pádraic Ó Conaire féin agus a lucht aitheantais le brath ar na carachtair a chruthaíonn sé sna gearrscéalta. Deirtear nach gcruthaíonn scríbhneoirí carachtair inchreidte, iontaofa amach as a n-aigne féin ach go mbíonn siad bunaithe ar a lucht aitheantais. De réir de Faoite bhí aithne phearsanta ag an gConaireach ar phoblachtánaigh. Mhúin sé ranganna Gaeilge do lucht Chonradh na Gaeilge i Londain go luath san fhichiú haois. Bhí sé mór le Michael Collins mar shampla agus bhí Pádraig Mac Piarais ina eagarthóir ar a chuid saothair ó thús na hAthbheochana Liteartha go dtí a anbhás,

3 Bealtaine 1916. Deir de Faoite go gcuaigh gearrscéalta Uí Chonaire chun leadráin in áiteanna ina dhiaidh sin cheal dea-eagarthóireachta. Ach scéal thairis é sin faoin am seo. Níl dabht ar bith faoi ach gur thug Diarmuid de Faoite agus Nuala Ní Chanainn seoid de thaispeántas dúinn sa Lab an Domhnach déanach d’Iúil. Ba phribhléid dúinn go léir a bheith i láthair. - Máire Ní Iarlaithe Mar Eolas Dioplóma i Múineadh na Gaeilge (Foghlaimeoirí Fásta) Tá an cúrsa páirtaimseartha seo ag Leibhéal 7 á thairiscint ag Ionad na dTeangacha, Ollscoil Mhaigh Nuad, Co. Local B/B’s and guesthouses were all booked out and families too were home on a visit and Mass at St. Marys Church on Sunday and at The Church of Ireland, Kilgobban had lots of tourists in attendance. Pubs and local restaurants had a good weekend and visitors are high in their praise of the delicious locally sourced food and great ambience in all our local hostelries and everyone is so friendly and nice to meet. Well done to all ! Wedding Congratulations to Lorraine Moynihan, Camp and Glen McCarthy, Churchhill on their recent marriage. The very best of luck to you both, Go n-éirí and tÁdh libh Obituary. The death of our local blacksmith, John McCarthy, The Forge, Carrigaha, Camp brings to a close a vibrant and living chapter in the local history of this area. In the old days, the forge was a hive of activity especially on wet days when local farmers had little else to do at home other than take their horses to be shod at the forge. John McCarthy was a master craftsman of his profession and even in later years he adapted easily with the times and changing practices in farming, making car trailers and repairing tractors and other machinery. John was a gentle, quiet man, a good neighbour and a friend to many people whose life he touched in The Forge at Carrigaha. He will be missed ! John was waked in Lynchs Funeral Home, Castlegregory on Friday evening and was laid to rest on Saturday in Ballinknockane Cemetary, Camp following Requiem Mass at St. Marys Church, Castlegregory. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Sympathy is extended to his son Thomas, daughters Catherine, Mary and Bridget, grand children, brother Brendan, sisters, Mary and Chrissie extended family and friends. John was Predeceased By His Wife Bridie.

Parish Priest has left a huge legacy to all of us, he founded An Díseart a third level Institute of Education in Dingle in 1996 to promote the research and study into all areas of Irish Spirituality, Celtic Culture, language, theology, literature and arts. A writer and scholar himself, he established links with Universities at home and abroad and welcomed students from all over the world to study Irish Culture and Literature. And above all Monsignor Ó Fiannachta was a man of the people of Corca Dhuibhne, in the midst of all his literary and cultural achievements, he was able to find time and took an interest in everything happening around him locally, and campaigning for the Dingle Community Hospital where he spent his own final days was a project close to his heart. He was laid to rest on Wednesday in the church yard of Seipéal Naomh Chaithlín, in Ceann Trá. Beannacht Dé lena anam dílis. Cloghane Native Passes away In New York The news of the death of Morgan O Flaherty, Cloghane and Queens, New York was received with sadness all along the lower west of our peninsula where Morgan was well known and liked. On one of his final visits home he caught up with a lot of us in Camp Fair where we all enjoyed a great evening. A screen writer and producer of many plays and theatre productions in New York, Morgan also had a huge stage presence himself taking part in plays in Sunnyside, New York where he and his wife Catherine resided for many happy years ! Sympathy is extended to his wife Catherine, brother Thomas, Uncle James Courtney, nieces, nephew and all the extended family and friends. Morgan was laid to rest in Ballymacelligott cemetary. and old farming practices, a real walk down memory lane for all the family. Always a great day ! The event will be held in the field at the rear of Fitzgeralds, Camp Junction Bar. Camp Fair Camp Fair falls on Monday September 19th. This year. The Fair is one of the oldest traditional sheep fairs in the country, still a living testimony to the practice of buying and selling sheep in the old fashioned way, making bargains and deals and judging sheep held in pens like long ago. The Sheep Show on the day attracts top quality sheep from all around the peninsula. Watch this space for details of categories ! And you are invited to take part in the fancy dress parade for children and adults which will be good fun too. Camp Fair was always a children’s day in the village and we hope to engage them much more this year. Again watch this space! And a few Horses and donkeys have in recent years adorned the cross on Camp Fair Day, so mark your September Diary to include a day out in Camp for all the family.

The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson to produce something that is altogether more than the sum of it’s individual parts in it’s recasting of folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour. Joyful Living Anne Healy ‘Enjoying your child and sharing in the awe of discovering what it means to be alive, to be a person in a wondrous world, is crucial for the development of your child’s positive sense of self’ - Dr Dan Siegel Dr.Siegel says that ‘enjoying your child and sharing in the awe of discovering what it means to be alive, to be a person in a wondrous world, is crucial for the development of your child’s positive sense of self’. Reflect for a moment on joyful moments you enjoyed this week with your child. Perhaps there are many or maybe none! However try to consider the first thing that comes to mind - a time when you and your child felt great joy together. What feelings does this evoke for you? Perhaps ask your child or children how they felt during these moments of joyful shared time together. The other day I was walking in Ballincollig Park and I was busy thinking of what I was doing later that evening. Suddenly the sound of joyous rapture of children’s laughter took me out of my trance state and stopped me on my tracks. The joyous sound came from a group of children who were playing ‘blind man’s buff. I noticed the mother of the children placing a scarf over one of the child’s eyes and then turning and turning her child around and around while the other children skipped with anticipation of the chase ahead. I was cast back to summers days as a child and times when my parents found time to ‘see us’ and take time out from the stresses and demands of parenting. Siegel says that ‘remembering and reflecting on the experiences of day-to-day life creates a deep sense of feeling connected and understood’. An advertisement used to run on television some years ago of a mother dropping children off to various clubs, activities and her car had a taxi sign on the roof. While it is great that children get to experience different opportunities to develop their skills it is really important to 42 West Kerry Live

find time to together to enjoy shared experiences and create memories that enrich you and your child’s lives together. Siegel explains when parents are too busy doing things for our children, ‘one can forget how important it is to simply be with them’. He suggests that learning to share in the joy of living is at the heart of a rewarding parent-child relationship. Pam Leo author of Connection Parenting suggests that children need at least 10 minutes of daily connect time with at least one adult, to feel safe, connected, and loved. During this time, your child needs to have your full attention, and to get really connected, your full engagement. That means PLAY! Play is not just for your younger children it is for children of all ages! Check out the following website if you want ideas for connecting playfully with your child http://onetimethrough.com/joyful-ways-toconnect/. Or perhaps just call on the great and rich bank from the world of your own and child’s wonderful imagination. A little boy told me the other day that he was having water party’ in his garden later that Solar‘aSystems afternoon with his mother and sister. His eyes shone with joy as he told me this. A water Tom Kennedy party .. it does not cost anything but my guess Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide is when hebyisthemy and hears the hotthat water when heated sun’sage energy, thus he saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. squeal of laugher in the distance and looks A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When and sees it is a water party he too like me in it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially Ballincollig Park this week on seeing a famwhen we have had such a great spell of sunshine. ily playing ‘blind man’s buff’ will remember There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamthe joy of that day and other joyful days that ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!his relationship with his parents. shaped Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. Anne play therapist and parent adThe wayHealy it works is is aapanel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar viser with over thirty years experience of workto what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the ing 087 panelwith wherechildren it heats due and to the families. fact that the gas has2486421 a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, info@mindfulparentingadvice.ie where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity www.mindfulparentingadvice.ie to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

That Extra Hole on Top of Your Runners Eddie O’ Grady Why is there an extra lace-hole on the top of your runners?.....Yes the one you have gazed at curiously but have always chosen to ignore. Have you ever wondered why there is an extra shoelace hole at the top of your running shoe? Many running and hiking shoes have the extra hole, most people never use it. Instead, they skip threading the lace through the last top hole and tie them as usual. When you tie your laces properly using these extra holes using the “heel lock” or “lace lock” technique, it creates more friction between the laces at the top of the shoe, which are closest to your ankle. This serves to keep the heel/ankle area tightly and snugly in place. Using these extra holes can help prevent blistering on your heels, and also stop your feet from cramming forward into the front of the shoe, injuring toes. They also help prevent a condition called ‘’plantar fasciitis’’, in runners. This can occur unexpectedly in a runner who heads out for a long jog, without properly and securely lacing up their trainers. The cause in this situation is increased torsion between the heel and the forefoot during running, stressing the plantarfascia, due to the loosely laced footwear. It is important to understand foot biomechanics when treating plantar fasciitis. There are plenty of treatments out there for the condition. Most do not address the cause of the problem, so have limited results. By securely tying your runners and properly utilising this extra hole, you securely lock the heel and forefoot in place, reducing torsion, and as a result reducing the chances of injury to the plantar fascia.

How to properly utilise that extra hole

The Keel GAA VHI Cul Camp

Keel GAA Colin Clifford Mid Kerry League Keel played Glenbeigh Glencar in the final round of the Mid Kerry League in what was essentially a semi final that would have seen either team through to the final if they won. What followed was a cracking hour of football that would unfortunately end in a draw that would be of benefit to neither team. Both teams were missing a number of regulars and traded points from Barth Murphy and Podge Griffin before Jack Brosnan ran the length of the field and score a goal from a rebound after a fine save from Luke Flynn. A Jason McKenna free left Glenbeigh Glencar ahead by 1-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. Keel responded with two points from Gary Sayers and a point each from Dylan Prendergast and David McAssey to level the game at 0-5 to 1-2. Both teams were evenly matched and went in at half time level at 0-8 to 1-5 after Gary Sayers scored two points and one for Aaron Murphy for the home side were met with two Jason McKenna points and one from Colin McGillycuddy. Two Jason McKenna free’s and a point each from Sayers and Terry O’Sullivan kept the game level at 0-10 to 1-7 before Keel established a three point lead through two Aaron

Murphy points and one form Sayers. Pa Kilkenny was becoming more influential and soon the game was level at 0-13 to1-10 with points from Jack Brosnan and McKenna. As the clock ticked down points from Jerry Hoare and Leon Seidler looked like they would put Glenbeigh Glencar in the Mid Kerry League Final until Sayers scored a last minute free to level the match again. Final score Keel 0-15 Glenbeigh Glencar 1-12

B12 – The Hard Working Vitamin! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It is scary to think that less than 100 years ago, pernicious anaemia, an extreme consequence of vitamin B12 deficiency, was considered untreatable and fatal. There was much doom and gloom about the condition until three American physiologists - William Murphy, George Minot and George Whipple discovered that food could be used to treat pernicious anaemia. Their diet treatment, which included eating liver “in quantities that seemed outrageous”, roughly 250g of beef liver daily - had dramatic beneficial effects on the once untreatable pernicious anemia. In 1934, the three amigos scooped a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discovery. Thankfully, since then, we have learned that pernicious anaemia is a condition where we do not produce enough red blood cells due to the lack of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is vital for nerve cells as well as red blood cells and to make DNA. It deficiency can also have devastating effects on our neurological health leading to amnesia, depression, dementia and an increased risk of stomach cancer. Long before these serious illnesses manifest - symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are present - such as fatigue, heart palpitations, tingling of hands and feet, feeling run down and prone to infection, sore tongue and cracks on the side of the mouth, muscular pains and aches, confusion, depression, altered sense of touch and co-ordination problems. Testing for vitamin B12 levels is normally carried out by your GP with a blood test, although more sophisticated tests, including a breath test is in the pipeline. The treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency may involve intramuscular injections or sublingual (under the tongue) supplements.

fer extra support for those whose ability to absorb it is impaired. Alcoholics are a high risk group because alcohol abuse depletes stores of B12 and also hinders the absorption process in the stomach. Long-term use of antacids and prescription drugs that lower stomach acidity can contribute and worsen B12 deficiency. Other risk groups are those with illnesses of malabsorption such as Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease, small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), gastritis and stomach ulcers. A vitamin B12 deficiency will not occur overnight and can take many years to manifest itself. If you have many of the symptoms above - talk to your GP about being tested. In the meantime, ensure you are getting plenty B12 in your diet - a little amount often is best to keep a good supply but when levels are low you can increase your store by adding liver to the diet a couple of times a week. Also, foods such as Marmite, yeast flakes, sea vegetables and any fortified cereals will help boost you B12 intake. Supplements are usually available in tiny nuggets or liquid, ready to be absorbed underneath the tongue. High dose oral supplementation is now the preferred route for correcting deficiencies in Canada and Sweden as it is just as effective as the injections and well-tolerated by patients. Many other countries are considering the same because it is also more cost effective and less demanding on healthcare resources than the traditional intramuscular injections.

Vitamin B12, as all vitamins play an active and vital role in the way our bodies function. Thanks to the tireless work of great minds such as our three heroes mentioned earlier, science continues to demonstrate that the food we eat has the greatest influence on our health and wellbeing.

Optimal levels of vitamin B12 is reliant on eating foods rich in vitamin B12 such as meat, fish and dairy foods as well as having the ability to absorb and assimilate the vitamin efficiently. Unlike most other vitamins, B12 requires stomach acid to liberate it from food plus a protein secreted by stomach cells called “Intrinsic Factor” to carry it to the small intestine for absorption into the bloodstream. Any chink along this chain of events can hinder B12 being readily available to the body. Strict vegetarians and vegans have the highest diet-related risk of deficiency that warrants regular testing and followup supplementation if needed. B12 is produced by gut bacteria in herbivorous animals such as cattle, but our human gut bacteria do not produce enough to meet all our demand. Calves’ liver is the richest source of this vitamin - a 125g portion providing a whopping 95mcg - which is 38 times the recommended daily amount. Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver, which is why animal liver is the best food source. As mentioned above absorption depends on stomach acid and intrinsic factor secretions. Age can be a factor as stomach acid declines as we get older. Foods fortified with B12 and B12 supplements are not dependent on stomach acid as they are readily available in a “free form” and not bound to any food, and can of46 West Kerry Live

Back to School Clothing & Footwear Allowance Question What is the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance? Answer The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. You must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. Your children must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September 2016. If they are aged between 18 and 22, they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. The allowance is €100 for eligible children aged between 4 and 11 and €200 for those aged between 12 and 22. The scheme is open from 1 June to 30 September 2016. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically to many customers. This means that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you should receive a letter stating when and how your Allowance will be paid. If you do not get an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must apply for the Allowance for them and supply evidence that they are in secondlevel education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in the family). You can get application forms in all local social welfare offices and Intreo centres, and on the Department’s website, welfare.ie. When a decision has been made on your application, you will get a letter informing you of this and whether a payment has been awarded. If your application has been successful, you will also be told when and where you can collect the payment. If the Allowance is refused, you can ask for a review of the decision. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre: Tralee 0761 07 7860 Killarney: 0761 07 7820 Killorglin: 0761 07 7830 Dingle Outreach: 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Old CBS Monastery Hall, John Street.
