Dingle Historical Society presents its 100th lecture

The Knave of Trumps The Life and Times of Count James Louis Rice of Dingle 1730-1801 An illustrated lecture by Pat Neligan Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Date: Tuesday, 1st August, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome In 1792 a small band of Irish émigrés launched one of the most daring rescue plans in history – to free Queen Marie Antoinette from the Temple prison in Paris and bring her to safety in Dingle, Co. Kerry. In this lecture, Pat Neligan, history teacher and author, explores the historical reality behind this most enduring of Dingle legends and traces the astonishing adventures of the principal character who inspired it, the celebrated Count James Louis Rice. Born in Ballymacadoyle, a remote corner of the parish of Dingle, Count Rice became a household name throughout Europe in the late eighteenth century. He achieved celebrity status as a result of his activities in such diverse centres as Leuven, Liege, Vienna, Paris, Bath, Spa, Aachen, Guernsey and London. He enjoyed the days of grandeur and excess in pre-revolutionary France with his friends in the Irish Brigade. He witnessed the horrors of the French Revolution

and its bloody aftermath, in which he played a significant role. During this period of his life, he was constantly exposed to extreme danger and the possibility of an ignoble death on the guillotine. After a turbulent life, Count Rice died in the northeast corner of the Iberian peninsula in 1801. He had been a fearless adventurer, an archetypal swashbuckler, outstanding in an age which produced many such men. He was a man of great ability and personality, rubbing shoulders with the great and good of eighteenthcentury Europe, including the Holy Roman Emperor himself, Joseph II. He was equally at home among Europe's most powerful nobility as he was with his family and friends in his native Kerry.

mary school in Walkinstown for five years where another Dingle man, James Barrett, also of Main Street, was principal. He graduated from UCD in 1971 with a BA and H. Dip and returned to Dingle, joining the staff of the CBS, where he taught history to a generation of secondary school students. In 2002 he took an MA in Local History Studies at UCC, completing a thesis on an infamous murder in West Kerry, Dúnmharú Mhám Conarach, 1876. In 2017 he self-published The Knave of Trumps - The Life and Times of Count James Louis Rice of Dingle 1730-1801. He is currently working on other local history topics from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The story of Count James Louis Rice takes us from the world where he grew up to the heart of Austrian and French royal circles; from the opulent playgrounds of eighteenth-century aristocrats to the blood-spattered cobblestones of the Place de la Revolution in Paris. This lecture reveals the man behind the legend, and sheds new light on Count James Louis Rice’s attempt to rescue Queen Marie Antoinette of France and bring her to safety in Dingle. Pat Neligan was born and reared in Main Street, Dingle, Pat followed the traditional Dingle path to education, first to the Presentation Sisters’ Primary school in Goat Street followed by the Chrstian Brothers’ Secondary school in John Street. He graduated from St Patrick’s Training College, Drumcondra, in 1966 and taught in St Peter’s pri-

Dub Jamtronica in NellieFred’s Saturday 22nd July: Doors 10pm NellieFred’s in Dingle brings something a little different to the Spa Road when the venue hosts Wiggle this Saturday 22nd July. The collective came together at the turn of the century playing their very own unique music which could best be described as dub jamtronica. They incorporate the bass of Dub with the beats and rhythms of DnB, Jungle and Trance over which they lay stream of consciousness vocals, live sampling, guitar diddles and key lines. Initial influences came from roots reggae and dub as well as their immediate musical surroundings in Cork: the mighty Revelation Sound, Bonjai Massive, Green Monitor, Sultans of Ping, Cremé de Meth. No two gigs have been the same since they first started playing making each gig a very unique event. Tickets €5 on eventbrite.ie or at the venue before 10pm (€10 thereafter)

Thomas Callaghan CD Launch Thomas O’Callaghan, whose colourful commentary provides the

together a collection of 11 of his favourite songs. The songs, all of which are special to Thomas in one way or another, could be from a showband era playlist. They include, The Kingdom I Call Home, Mary From Dungloe, The Old Bog Road, and Dingle Bay – a very familiar song from Thomas’s repertoire, which on the recording is paired with a poem about Dingle Races by former Dingle PP, Canon Tom Looney. Joe Queally said Thomas didn’t hesitate when asked to do the recording for the RNLI. "It’s people like this who give of themselves that build a lifeboat, who put diesel in the engines…" Pat Neligan will launch the CD in The Skellig Hotel at 8.30pm on Wednesday next, June 26. All are welcome and a night of ballads, memories and good craic is promised. All the money raised from sales of the CD will be donated to the RNLI.

Although this is Thomas’s first CD, he has long since been known for his fine singing voice, which he inherited from his father, Mikey, a noted balladeer in his own right. The inspiration for the CD came from a meeting between Thomas and Joe Queally of Clare RNLI at a Blessing of the Throats Mass on the Feast of St Blaize last February. Joe asked Thomas to record a CD for the lifeboat service and the Sráid Eoin man took up the challenge without a moment’s hesitation. Thomas, who now lives in Ennis, set about recording the CD in Milltown Malbay Studios and in a matter of only a few weeks he had put 6 West Kerry Live

Disinfection Of Domestic Wells And Boreholes Disinfection is an important means of protecting human health, but it should not be considered as a solution to groundwater contamination. The Geological Survey of Ireland recommend that all new wells should be disinfected after drilling and that existing wells should be disinfected on a regular basis (each Autumn is suggested). There are two methods recommended for the disinfection of boreholes; method 1 involves the use of bleach and method 2 involves using chloros. Both methods are outlined below. METHOD 1: Using Bleach (sodium hypochloride, 3-5% available chlorine) 1.) Obtain 2 gallons (9 litres) of 3% strength or 1 gallon (4.5 litres) of 5% strength e.g.Parazone or Milton. 2.) Make up to 5 gallons (22.5 litres) by adding water and mix thoroughly. 3.) If sampling during a pumping test, on the day before the test starts pour half of the solution into the borehole/well, start the pump and let it run briefly until water with a distinct smell of chlorine pours from the outlet pipe. Turn off the pump immediately. Add the remainder of the solution and leave overnight (12 – 24 hours). Then pump to waste until the smell of chlorine disappears before taking a sample for analysis. 4.) If sampling from a well that is connected to a house, pour half of the solution into the well, start the pump and open all taps until water from each tap has a distinct small of chlorine. Stop the pump and add the rest of the solution. Allow to stand for 12-24 hours, then pump to waste until the smell of chlorine disappears. The length of time it takes to pump a well completely depends on the volume of the well, the volume of bleach added and the size of the pump installed. METHOD 2: Using Chloros (12% available chlorine) 1.) Obtain 0.5 gallons (2-3 litres) chloros. [2,) 3.) and 4.) (as method 1). Water usage: Water is the forgotten nutrient on farms and can be a massive expensive but a necessary one, to have thriving productive animals. The following is the necessary water per day

If the animals are not getting access to this level of water per day then they will not be as productive as they are capable of. For example a dairy cow will drop in milk yield 10% without adequate water which in the average herd will be 500 litres of milk per year per cow. This is €132.50 per cow at current prices or over €6500 for the average herd size in the country. Water loss is even more expensive on farms and tends to be something that is forgotten about. A dripping tap can cost between €2 and €40 per day depending on how bad the drip is. The usual cause of this is a worn washer which is a 70c fix and a 5 minute job. A leaking ball valve in a drinker can lose up to 150000 litres of water a year believe it or not and will save you €170 per year if fixed. An underground leak with a constant stream can be a lot worse costing anywhere up to €1500 per year. One example recently where a farmer replaced a length of piping where there was a leak at a cost of €450 for the materials and work. His saving in the first year was €1840 €10m in GLAS payments to issue recently. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., has announced that almost €10m in GLAS balancing payments are issuing today to 15,000 farmers in the GLAS 1 and 2 scheme. This represents the 15% of the 2016 payment and completes the total payment for GLAS actions undertaken last year for 15,000 farmers. Today’s 10 West Kerry Live

payment of just under €10m brings to over €138m the total payments made to date in respect of GLAS 2016. However, the Department placed a caveat in the announcement, that Nutrient Management Plans must be complete and submitted before this 15% payment can be made. This is somewhat disingenuous, as the NMP system was only made fully operational quite recently, and is often down due to maintenance and repairs. Many farmers think that their NMP will be submitted immediately, but in many cases, this may take some time, so farmers are being asked by advisors to be patient. On a related issue, the Commonage Management Plans that were supposed to be complete by 31st August have been pushed back to 31st October, because the proposed CMP System is not yet ready either. This will most likely result in an unannounced text to the entire farming community notifying them of the situation. The problem with this text system is that once a farmer receives said text, he or she will immediately make a call to their advisor which is understandable. But if everyone does this, it results in 50,000 calls being made in the space of one or two days to approximately 200 advisory offices resulting on 250 calls per office. This is turn takes up close to a week of the advisors work. A better way would be to notify the advisor first, of the pending text, thus allowing them to be prepared for the influx of these calls. The NMP system is managed and operated by Teagasc for the Department of Agriculture and remains open for the submission of NMPs by GLAS Advisors. It is a costly system to access, and as such, farmers should be aware that this work is not free. Creed Launches the National Farmed Animal Health Strategy 2017-22 The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, recently launched the National Farmed Animal Health Strategy 2017-22. The Strategy sets out a comprehensive set of actions for all stakeholders in the agri-food industry to work in partnership to achieve optimal animal health in Ireland. Prevention of disease minimises financial losses to farmers, the broader agri-food industry and the country. Upholding Ireland’s reputation for good animal health is vital to our ongoing efforts to secure access to the world’s markets. At a broader societal level, zoonotic infections in animals and the avoidable use of antibiotics in animals may impact on public health. Less than optimal animal health can also negatively affect the environment. In recent years Ireland has made excellent progress with country-free status for Brucellosis and Aujezsky’s disease, control of BSE and a substantial reduction in the incidence of TB. Animal Health Ireland, in partnership with industry stakeholders, is making substantial progress on BVD eradication and in improving milk quality with a focus on Somatic Cell Count reduction through the CellCheck programme. Additionally a new Johne’s Disease Control Programme is being developed and progressed. However, we must be mindful of ongoing threats to animal health, including the emergence of Schmallenberg virus and the resurgence of Bluetongue and Avian Influenza viruses across Europe. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a major risk to public health. The most significant way to reduce AMR is to reduce antibiotic usage which will flow from a healthy animal population. Department hosts Moroccan Trade Delegation The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has hosted a visiting delegation from Morocco, headed by Mr Hammou Ouhelli, Secretary of State for Rural Development. The Secretary of State was accompanied by Senior Officials from ONSSA, ADA and industry representatives. This visit follows on from the successful Trade Mission to Morocco, lead by Minister Creed last November. Senior Department officials accompanied by Sustainable Food Systems Ireland hosted high level discussions in Agriculture House, where opportunities for enhanced trade and cooperation were discussed. The Moroccan delegation will also have an opportunity to meet with key state agencies such as Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland and Teagasc. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

B12 – the Busy Bee! Irene Ní Fhlannúra It is surprising to think that in the 1920’s pernicious anaemia, an extreme consequence of vitamin B12 deficiency, was considered untreatable and fatal. There was much doom and gloom about the condition until three American physiologists - William Murphy, George Minot and George Whipple discovered that food could be used to treat pernicious anaemia. The diet, which included eating liver “in quantities that seemed outrageous”, roughly 250g of beef liver daily - had dramatic beneficial effects on the once untreatable pernicious anemia. In 1934, the three amigos scooped a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their discovery. Since then, we have learned that pernicious anaemia develops when we do not produce enough red blood cells due to the lack of vitamin B12. As vitamin B12 is vital for nerve cells as well as red blood cells and to make DNA - it can have devastating effects on our neurological health leading to amnesia, depression, dementia and an increased risk of stomach cancer. Long before these serious illnesses manifest symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are present - such as fatigue, heart palpitations, tingling of hands and feet, feeling run down and prone to infection, sore tongue and cracks on the side of the mouth, muscular pains and aches, confusion, depression, altered sense of touch and co-ordination problems. Testing for vitamin B12 levels is normally carried out by your GP with a blood test, although more sophisticated tests, including a breath test is in the pipeline. The treatment for vitamin B12 deficiency may involve intramuscular injections or sublingual (under the tongue) supplements. Having optimal levels of vitamin B12 depends mainly on eating enough foods rich in vita-

min B12 such as meat, fish and dairy foods as well as having the tools to absorb it efficiently. Unlike most other vitamins, B12 requires stomach acid to liberate it from food plus a protein secreted by stomach cells called “Intrinsic Factor” to carry it to the small intestine for absorption into the bloodstream. Any chink along this chain of events can hinder B12 being readily available to the body. Strict vegetarians and vegans have the highest diet-related risk by avoiding foods rich in vitamin B12, although some seaweeds, such as Nori are a good supply when eaten in adequate amounts. Calves’ liver is the richest source of this vitamin - a 125g portion providing a whopping 95mcg - which is 38 times the recommended daily amount. Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver, which is why liver is the best source. A well-balanced diet will supply plenty of vitamin B12 for most healthy people, but problems may arise where absorption is poor. As mentioned above absorption depends on stomach acid and intrinsic factor secretions. Age is often a factor as stomach acid declines as we get older. However, foods fortified with B12 and B12 supplements are not dependent on stomach acid as they are readily available in a “free form” and not bound to any food. Alcoholics are a high risk group because alcohol abuse depletes stores of B12 and also hinders the absorption process in the stomach. Long term use of antacids and prescription drugs that lower stomach acidity can contribute and worsen B12 deficiency. Other risk groups are those with illnesses of malabsorption such as Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease, small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), gastritis and stomach ulcers. A vitamin B12 deficiency will not occur overnight and can take many years to manifest itself. If you have many of the symptoms above - talk to your GP about being tested. In the meantime, ensure you are getting plenty B12 in your diet - a little amount often is best to keep a good supply but when levels are low

you can increase your intake by adding liver to the diet a couple of times a week. Also, foods such as Marmite, yeast flakes, sea vegetables and any fortified cereals will help boost you B12 intake. Supplements are usually available in tiny nuggets or liquid, ready to be absorbed underneath the tongue. High dose oral supplementation is now the preferred route for correcting deficiencies in Canada and Sweden as it is just as effective as the injections and well-tolerated by patients. Many other countries are considering the same because it is also more cost effective and less demanding on healthcare resources than the traditional intramuscular injections. Vitamin B12, as all vitamins play an active and vital role in the way our bodies function. We rely on the support of other vitamins, minerals, enzymes and gut bacteria for optimum absorption of all nutrients. Thanks to the tireless work of great minds such as our three heroes mentioned earlier, science continues to demonstrate that what we eat everyday has the greatest influence on our health and wellbeing.

Computer Matters Joan Maguire Net neutrality in simplest terms is a principle that states that all packages of data on the Internet will be treated equally. Requests from information and emails travel in containers called packages over the Internet. When you make a request for something through Google or Bing or some other search engine, your device i.e. computer, mobile etc, sends that request to a computer belonging to your Internet Service Provider which is connected to the Internet 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Over the past years there has been a lot of discussion around the subject of net neutrality. VoIP were central in this debate. Services or apps such as Skype and Whats App, use teh technology VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol). With Skype and WhatsApp, users can make a video connection to other users, using video that travels over the Internet. People who choose to use these services, pay for Interent usage but they do not pay the individual cost of each call or communication as it was previously with the phone companies. Telecom companies looked to see was there a way that they could discourage people from doing this and in the process some of them were giving less priority to certain data and more priority to other types of data on the Internet, as they were also Internet Service Providers. As all the data is routed through the Internet Service Provider they had the ability to do this. A group of concerned Internet users started a movement that set about ensuring that all data on the Internet was treated equally and that Internet Service Providers could not prioritise some data over another. The European Parliament in 2011 made a call to the commission to ensure that ISPs do not block, discriminate, impair or degrade the ability of any person to use a service.

Siúlóid Adrian Begley The Begley family would like to thank all those who participated in the Annual Siúlóid Adrian and contributed generously to the Kerry - Cork Link Bus. A special thanks to John Moriarty, Murphy’s Pub Brandon, Garvey’s SuperValu Dingle and Sheehy’s Spar Dingle. A total of €2,460 was raised for the Kerry - Cork Link Bus and the family greatly appreciate the efforts of all involved in supporting this very deserving cause and remembering Adrian. Míle Buíochas.

In 2015 a movement called save the Internet was launched which harnessed International opinion and lobbied to protect the neutrality of the Internet. Regulations regarding net neutrality came into force in December 2015. These regulations were challenged on the grounds that they were restricting the ISP's ability to manage traffic, if they could not prioritise some traffic over the other. This led to a consultation process with all the communications regulators in Europe. Resulting from this, in August 2016 the EU gave a resounding voice of support to Net Neutrality, the EU now is the gold standard bearer when it comes to projecting net neutrality. Two years ago the US also took steps to protect net neutrality. Presently there are fears for the security of this decision. A new appointee in the American administration, is tasked with reviewing the decision and examining whether net neutrality is in line with the present administrations policy. ISP:Your Internet Service provider is the person that you pay for your connection to the Internet, that could be through a landline, a satellite or a mobile phone company. Mackerel, Potato Salad, Horseradish Cream

salt and pepper Method For the horseradish cream

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Mix all of the ingredients together. Taste and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Leave this in the fridge until needed.

Here is a simple but tasty lunch or starter. Mackerel with new potatoes is so tasty. To bring out the best in the dish you really need something like the horseradish and the mustard to cut through the oil in the fish.

For the Potato Salad

The potato salad itself can be served as a side to any summer meal. For this recipe, I have made my potato salad without mayonnaise and instead I have opted for a really good extra virgin olive oil, make sure to add it when the potatoes are still warm but not too hot, as this will let it soak into the potato. The Castle in Dublin Tom Hogan What a great day out Castlegregory’s U12 teams had on their recent visit to Dublin. Our 2 match challenge against Ballymun Kickhams provided us with two thrillers that ebbed and flowed ‘til the final whistle. After a nail-biting encounter which could have gone either way (Castle hit the woodwork 5 times!) our Green team went down gallantly on a score line of Ballymun 4-12 Castle 3-10. Our Gold team, although down 5 points at half-time, put in a terrific second half performance to run out winners – 4-14 to 2-14. Both of these games were hugely entertaining and were played at a very high tempo and intensity, reminiscent of all that was best in the classic Kerry v Dublin clashes down through the ages. But while the rivalry on the pitch was intense the hospitality and generosity we received from Ballymun was first class; and after the games they opened their club rooms and kindly provided light refreshments for all the Castle players and mentors. We would like to thank Alan, Jimmy and all at Ballymun Kickhams for the warm welcome we received and for providing our young Kerry lads with the opportunity to play against their arch rivals ‘the Dubs’. Who knows? Maybe one day, in the not too distant future, some of the players from either side will line out against one another on the biggest day of all in Croke Park! On leaving Ballymun, our day continued with our visit to Croke Park. Although not part

18 West Kerry Live

of the guided tour, our tour guide, Lauren, kindly allowed us visit the ‘Castle Dressing Room’. Team mentors Ger O’Callaghan and Tom Hogan spoke of taking a bunch of young kids (the same age as our young stars) to visit Croke Park in 2002 and returning to the same dressing room (the very dressing room we were now sitting in!) in 2010 to win the All-Ireland Junior Club Final. As all our lads listened with rapt attention, one little red head put up his hand and asked the question ‘Can a German play for Kerry in Croke Park?’ Yes, Carl, you and all your teammates sitting here in the dressing room, can - with a little bit of luck, a lot of hard work, the right attitude and full dedication and commitment - play in Croke Park, hopefully, for both your club and for Kerry. After a visit to the ‘official tour’ dressing room often used by Kerry (some of the idiosyncrasies and habits of players were revealed but none will be told here!) our young lads ran out the tunnel to pitch side, and through well-placed speakers, heard the roar of the crowd ringing in their ears. At pitch-side O’Callaghan and Hogan took time out to themselves to recall many magic moments from that famous day in 2010. As our tour guide gave the lads a history of Croke Park our young stars informed her that the Stand they were now sitting in was called after the Coiste secretary’s grandfather who had been shot in Croke Park (who could have told them such an outrageous story???). The boys were then given the opportunity to climb the steps of the Ardán where they could lift a replica Sam Maguire - which they all did with great gusto.

Even the Coiste secretary couldn’t resist the temptation; raising the cup to Hill 16 and in a poor impersonation of Bryan Cullen he let out the famous roar – ‘See you all in Coppers’. Not to be outdone by a Dub, the Coiste chairman leapt up on the podium and did a perfect impersonation of Tadgh Kennelly ‘ag rince’! After being fed at Croke Park (with a goodie bag to go), it was back on the bus for the long journey home with one burning question still unanswered – ‘Are we stopping at Barack Obama’s?’ ‘Are we stopping at Barack Obama’s?’ ‘Are we stopping at Barack Obama’s?’ There was no stop at Obama’s; instead a stop at Birdhill saw our lads enjoy the very best cuisine that junk food restaurants can offer - be it at Obama’s, Birdhill or any other motorway stop. Back on the bus our tired but happy crew were taken safely home by our patient and accommodating driver Jamesy Keane. Overall, a great day out; and thanks again to Ballymun Kickhams for being such great hosts and looking after us so well. Also, thanks to all our players who conducted themselves impeccably throughout the trip. They are a credit to themselves, their parents, their club, their community and their county. Dingle Notes Richie Williams 24 Marathons. No doubt about it our hero of the week here in Dingle must be Shane Finn who has just completed 24 Marathons in 24 Days raising in excess of €100,000 in the process for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland. This amazing achievement follows his 12 marathons in 2014 when he collected €30,000 for the same good cause. One wonders what challenge Shane will be planning in 3 years time but well done to him and his family and back up team and to all who came out to support his arrival on Saturday last. Award. Belated congratulations to Marian O’Flaherty on her prestigious award at the recent National Broadcasting Ceremony. Marian has really opened up a new avenue in promoting Gaeilge and West Kerry activities through Radio Kerry. Comhgairdeas Marian. Turbetts. Summer is certainly here when we see the Turbett Family roll in to town with their Spin City Amusements once again. Welcome back folks and we hope you have a good summer in business and enjoy your stay in Dingle. Exhibition. Dingle Library hosts the Tomás Ághas exhibition for the next few months . This wonderful display of memorabelia from 100 years ago is part of our local history and well worth a visit. Business Outlets. Great to see McCarthy’s in Goat Street open again under the family name and operating just in time for the summer season. Other recently opened or reopened food outlets include the Random Restaurant in Dykegate Lane, My Boy Blue in Holyground, Pantri Cafe in Main street and The Smokehouse in the Mall. We appeal to our readers to support these and all the existing business outlets in town.

Parking. The problem has not gone away and it looks like it will take another few years before extra spaces in the centre of town will be available. However its good to hear that the County Council are continuing negotiations with various parties to secure the sites outlined in their plans. We again appeal to all who drive to work to park their vehicles in the many vacant places in the perimeter of town. Every parking space has the capacity to be used up to 20 times every day by people doing business in town and yes we all can help in some way to ensure our business survives into the future. Plean Teanga. Work is progressing on the efforts to put a plan in place to ensure Dingle Qualifies as a Service Town for the Gaeltacht and all business outlets are requested to return the questionnaires to the Lab or in the boxes in local financial institutions. Míle Buíochas. Slán Tamall.

Banking. The intended reduction in cash services in Bank of Ireland branches is a cause for concern particularly for a busy tourist area like the Dingle Peninsula and the inconvenience to our ageing rural population. The Business Chamber are sending a strongly worded appeal to the Banks Management to reconsider this decision and we recommend to other interested parties in the Peninsula to make their feeling known also. The full day financial service is the least we should expect and is this action just the start of the withdrawal of other vital services by national organisations from rural areas? Tidy Towns. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. The flower tubs in the Ashmount area have suffered again when somebody or bodies stood on them destroying one and damaging flowers in bloom in others. We appeal to all business and property owners to make a more genuine effort to clean up in and around their premises and show some pride in our town. It only takes a few minutes each day and the rewards will be visible almost immediately.

Domhnach Deirneach do Mhí Iúil

Crom Dubh Máirín Uí Shé Págánach ab ea Crom Dubh agus chónaigh sé sa Chaisleán. Bhí gabháltas mór talún aige go raibh falla mór cloiche timpeall uirthi. Bhí buachaillí aimsire agus cailíní aimsire go leor aige agus mórán saibhris. Bhí sáipéal le tógaint sa Chlochán agus má bhí chuaigh an sagart ag lorg cabhrach ar na comharsainn go léir i dtaobh an tsáipéil agus thug na héinne acu a gcabhair do. Tríd an dtreoir chuaigh sé ag lorg cabhrach ar Chrom Dubh cabhair oibre go gcuirfeadh sé cuid dá chuid fear chuige. Ach dúirt Crom Dubh leis ná déanfadh ach go raibh tarbh aige agus go dtabharfadh sé do é agus go mbeadh sé aige d’fhonn cóir bídh a chur ar a chuid fear. Go mbeadh sé aige le marú agus le cur ar salann agus gur mhaith an chabhair í sin. Ghaibh an sagart buíochas leis, ní nach ionadh agus d’imigh sé leis abhaile go Clochán. Ach bhí fhios ag Crom Dubh ina chroí agus ina aigne féin ná raibh aon fhear beo i gClochán a d’fhéadfadh breith ar an dtarbh san, mar tarbh buile ab ea é. Bhíodh na haon bhúir agus na haon bhéic aige na haon lá agus bhreá le Crom Dubh a bheith ag éisteach leis. I gceann cúpla lá nó trí bhí an sagart a rá le na chuid fear go raibh a leithéid do tharbh le fáil aige. D’iarr sé ar dhuine nó ar bheirt acu dul ag triall ar an dtarbh. Ach níor dh’aontaíodar i n-aonchor leis. Dúradar leis ná raghaidís mar ná beadh aon ghnó acu thar geata isteach go dtí an dtarbh san ná tiocfaidís amach ina mbeathfaidh go deo aríst, nár gearr go mbeidís curtha ar an saol eile aige. ‘Tugaim mo láimh agus mo fhocal duit,’ ar seiseann le duine acu. ‘Beir leat aidhstear. Bíodh sé déanta oiriúnach agat le cur isteach ar cheann an tairbh. Beidh sé ansúd romhat. Ní bheidh corraí as. Beidh sé chomh macánta le caora an tsraithí. Ní gá duit aon rud a dhéanamh ach an t-aistear a chur ar a cheann agus leanfaidh sé abhaile thú.’ Bhuel bhí ard mhisneach ag mo dhuine agus ghlac sé le focail an tsagairt agus d’imigh sé sa tsiúl. Thit gach rud amach mar a dúirt an sagart é. Bhí Crom Dubh imithe go Baile Thrálí ar chúram éigin. Bhí an tarbh i mbéál an gheataigh agus é chomh macánta le caora. D’oscail mo dhuine an geata shleamhnaigh sé an t-aidhstear ar a cheann agus lean an tarbh abhaile é. Ní fada a bhíodar imithe nuair d’fhill Crom Dubh abhaile. Scoir duine des na buachaillí aimsire a chapall ní nach ionadh agus shuigh Crom Dubh síos ina chathaoir ina chistin go breá do féin. Tar éis tamaill ghlaoigh sé ar an mbuachaill aimsire agus dúirt, ‘Ní bhraithim mo tharbh ag búirthigh in aonchor an raghfá amach féachaint an bhfuil sé ann.’ Mar buailfeadh isteach ina chroí agus ina aigne go raibh an tarbh tógaithe uaidh. Chuaigh an buachaill aimsire amach ach ní raibh an tarbh ná a thuairisc ann. Siúd isteach é go Crom Dubh. ‘Níl do tharbh in aonchor ann,’ ar seiseann. ‘Sea!’ arsa Crom Dubh, ‘Tá an méid sin déanta. Gaibh an capall aríst agus cuir an cóiste air.’ Gaibh an buachaill aimsire an capall agus chuir sé an cóiste air.’ Léim Crom Dubh isteach sa chóiste agus as go brách leis. Deirimse libh nár fhás aon fhéar fé chosa an chapaill an oíche sin mar bhí eagla air go mbeadh a tharbh marbh roimhe. Ach ní raibh. Bhí an sagart ansúd roimhe agus siúd fé chéile sa chaint iad. ‘Thugais uaim mo tharbh,’ arsa Crom Dubh. ‘Thugas,’ arsa an sagart, ‘mar thugais ceadaíocht dom chuige.’ ‘Ní bhfaigh tú aon cheadaíocht é a mharú ná é a dhídeach in aon saghas slí gan cúiteamh ceart a dhéanamh liomsa ar dtúis’ arsa Crom Dubh. ‘Nílimse ábalta aon chúiteamh a dhéanamh leat,’ arsa an sagart. ‘Tá mo dhóthaint cúraim orm pá agus bia a thabhairt dos na fearaibh atá ag tógaint an tsáipéil dom. Ach tabharfaidh mé an tÁivé Máiria dhuit.’ ‘Agus an gceapann tusa go meáfaidh an tÁivé Máiria mo tharbhsa,’ arsa Crom Dubh.

Scéal le Tomás Ó Scannláinn, Baile an Lochaigh. Thug Jeaic Ó Muircheartaigh Radió Na Gaeltachta dhom. Mo bhuíochas. Tá an nós ann i gcónaí dul go barra Chnoc Bhréanainn ó thaobh an Clocháin ar an nDomhnach deirneach do mhí Iúil, Domhnach Crom Dubh. Téann na céadta go barra Chruach Phádraig i gContae Mhuigheo ar an nDomhnach seo chomh maith. Théidís i rith na hoíche agus cosnocht fadó. Téann cuid acu cosnocht fós. Bíonn aifrintí ar barra. “Reek Sunday” a thugann siad air. Fadó bhí nós ann ar an nDomhnach seo buíochas a fháil as fhlúirse an Fhómhair. Théadh daoine ag dreapadóireacht ar shléibhte chun go mbeadh radharc acu ar thorthaí agus flúirse an Fhómhair agus buíochas a fháil – “Height Sunday” a ghlaoití ar i n-áiteanna. Thugtaí – “Garland Sunday” - ar leis agus théadh daoine go tobair agus imill uisce le bláthanna agus dheinidís –“An Turas” . Bhí meas ag ár sinsir ar an aoibhneas dúlra agus bhíodar buíoch. Deinimís dá réir.

‘Mar meáfaidh,’ arsa an sagart, ‘faighfimís scála.’ Fuaireadh scála. Scríobhfadh amach an tÁivé Máiria. Cuirfeadh an tarbh ar thaobh an scála agus an tÁivé Máiria ar an dtaobh eile. Sea suas a d’imigh an tarbh agus leag an tÁivé Máiria anuas. Mheáigh sí anuas an tarbh. ‘Féach anois,’ arsa an sagart. ‘Féach anois cad a dhein an tÁivé Máiria.’ ’Sé a thit amach ar an láthair sin ná gur chaith Crom Dubh é féin ar a dhá ghlúin agus ghaibh sé buíochas do Dia rud nár dhein sé riamh roimhe sin ina shaol agus i gceann lá nó dhó baisteach é féin agus a bhean agus a mhuintir a bhí leis d’iompaídear go léir ina gcaitlicigh . Ón lá san amach tá lá mór pátrúin sa Chlochán ar an nDomhnach deirneach do mhí Iúil - Domhnach Crom Dubh. Sin é agaibh é. West Kerry Live 25

Thomas Ashe Centenary Exhibition Opens At Dingle Library To coincide with the forthcoming centenary of the death of Thomas Ashe on 25 September 1917, Kerry Library has opened an exhibition at Dingle Library of archival documents, photographs, personal effects and other memorabilia relating to the West Kerry patriot. The exhibition tells the story of Thomas Ashe’s life through a number of personal items such as Ashe’s sword, Uileann pipes, tunic, beret, shawl and prison shirt as well as correspondence and photographs. The exhibition also features a number of information stands highlighting the contribution of Ashe to the events of the period. Speaking at the opening of the exhibition in Dingle, which was attended by members of Thomas Ashe’s family, the Cathaoirleach of the South and West Kerry Municipal District, Cllr Seamus Cosaí Fitzgerald, said it was fitting that such items would go on public display close to Ashe’s home place: “This is a very important and valuable collection of memorabilia related to Thomas Ashe and really brings you up close and personal with the man himself. A lot of work has gone into collecting, maintaining and displaying these items and I am pleased to see that the collection is available over the coming months in a location so close to Ashe’s native Lispole,” he said. “Now that we have moved on from last year’s very successful and reflective commemorations of the Easter Rising, the focus this year is very much on the events of 1917 and particularly Thomas Ashe and the role he played at the time, and not least because the centenary of his death which occurs on 25 September. “While Ashe’s key role in the events of the Rising were marked at many ceremonies during 2016, including at his native Kinard in Lispole, this year sees a very clear focus on Ashe’s wider life story and his role during the entire revolutionary period,” he said. Thomas Ashe, who was born at Kinard in 1885, played a major role in the Easter Rising, leading the Fingal Battalion of the Irish Volunteers and was the last of the leaders to surrender at the end of Easter Week. Between the end of the Rising and his death, he spent several periods in various prisons both in Ireland and in Britain. Ashe’s final arrest was in August 1917, and he spent the remaining weeks of his life at Mountjoy Prison, before being transferred to the Mater Hospital due to illness on the day of his death. He died of heart failure and congestion of the lungs caused by mistreatment in prison and complications arising out of forcible feeding while on hunger strike. The exhibition at Dingle Library will run until 14 October 2017 and will be open to the public during normal library opening hours (10am5pm, Monday-Saturday, and 10am-8pm on Thursdays).

Dingle Pitch & Putt Crazy Golf Soccer Golf Cé go bhfuil an suíomh i dTeampall na Cluanach lonnaithe ar Chosán na Naomh, níl sé chomh cáiliúil le cuid desna suíomhanna eaglasta atá againn i gCorca Dhuibhne. Imfhálú beag eaglasta ar thalamh príobháideach atá ann. Tá fothracha sáipéilín agus seana-eaglaise ann agus chomh maith leosan tá fothraigh clochán ann agus dhá philéar chrosinscríofa a d’fhéadfadh a bheith ann ó thréimhse nach luaithe í ná an naoú aois, maidir le cuid dosna saineolaithe. Although situated in a field beside the present route of Cosán na Naomh/The Saints’ Path, this site of Teampall na Cluanach, in the townland of Leataoibh Mór, is not as well-known as some of the other similar site-types on the peninsula. There are some unusual aspects to the site, including the sub-rectangular enclosure, which may be formed from later field boundaries, although there does not seem to be evidence for any other enclosure present. There are the remains of two rectangular buildings, one of which is likely to have been a church similar to the only intact version of this type still standing at Gallarus, although many other buildings like this in the area survive in various ruined states. To the north of this church is another rectangular building, which may also have had a religious use. It is to be noted that at Cill Maoilchéadair, as well as the main church on the site, the structure known as St Brendan’s Oratory (recently conserved) was also associated with the site, although built sometime earlier than the 12th-century building which presumably is just the most recent incarnation of what would have been the main church that was built there. There are two cross-inscribed pillar stones at the edge of the westernmost of the two leacht features to the west of the southernmost church building. These stones have recently been featured on the Corca Dhuibhne 3D website, by recorder Helene Brennan, and can be seen at http://www.corcadhuibhne3d.ie/lateeve.php and http://www. corcadhuibhne3d.ie/lateeve1.php. The leachtanna may well cover an important (certainly to the people at the time of interment) grave or graves. No excavation has ever taken place here to help further interpret the site. We don’t know of any holy person associated with this site, the name only describing the location (the church or burial ground of the meadow). However it was used as a ceallúnach (children’s burial ground) certainly during the 19th century and probably earlier. This indicates that the people of the locality knew that the site was a holy place, which of course was confirmed for them not only by the presence of the crosses carved on the stones, but there were probably other traditions then associated with the place. This site is on private property, although access is allowed to pilgrims/ 28 West Kerry Live

The Geological Heritage of West Kerry Kilmurry Bay: egg-shaped boulders and fossil sanddunes

Patrick Wyse Jackson In 1934 the London, Midland and Scottish railway company commissioned the celebrated artist Paul Henry to produce a series of posters in an attempt to encourage travellers to use their trains and visit Ireland. One of these posters featured Minard Castle which overlooks the small inlet at Kilmurry Bay (Beal na gCloc) just south of Annascaul. This castle was constructed of local stone in the 16th century, but was later besieged by Cromwell’s army in 1650 and left structurally unsound.

It seems incredible given their size that the force of storm waves could move them, but they have been thrown to the back of the beach where they form a ridge called a storm beach. This is probably the finest example of this feature in Ireland. If you are sharp-eyed you may be lucky to fine a ‘D’ beautifully carved into the top of one of the sandstone ‘eggs’. Unlike in other rocks on the Dingle Peninsula, the sandstones at Kilmurry Bay don’t contain any fossil shells. However, they have yielded trace fossils—markings on or in the rocks such as burrows and tracks that were made by animals, which unfortunately have themselves proved elusive.

siderably different ages have been brought alongside each other on a fault line. A fault is a crack or line of weakness in the Earth’s crust and movement along it causes earthquakes. This particular fault runs from Minard Bay all the way to Caherconree Mountain 20km to the east. Fortunately this fault is no longer active (it was probably last so many millions of years ago) and in any case earthquakes have not been recorded on the Dingle Peninsula in living memory. Patrick Wyse Jackson is a frequent visitor to the Dingle Peninsula and teaches geology at Trinity College, Dublin.

In Minard Bay, the next inlet along the coast to the west, two different rock types of con-

Kilmurry Bay is of great geological interest for two main reasons. Firstly, 380 million year old fossilised sand dunes can be seen in the cliffs. In the Devonian period rivers flowed south across a large desert, and carried sands and coarse sediments. The sand formed crescentshaped sand dunes in the desert, and these were subsequently consolidated and cemented to form the pale yellow Kilmurry Sandstone. This is a unit of the Old Red Sandstone that forms much of the Slieve Mish mountains and those seen on the Iveragh Peninsula. We know that the rocks were deposited as sanddunes as large as those in the Sahara Desert today, because they contain alternating layers of sediments in a pattern called ‘herring-bone cross-stratification’. This layering is quite easy to see in the rocks in the cliffs. Secondly, over many hundreds and possibly thousands of years large blocks of Kilmurry Sandstone have become rounded by the action of the waves and from knocking against each other—they now resemble large eggs.

Beach Wheelchairs Now Available At Two Kerry Beaches

ing provided at other Kerry beaches in the years ahead. The wheelchairs are designed for ease of movement on uneven ground and soft sand. Due to their balloon wheels, they cannot be selfpropelled, therefore, all users will be required to bring someone with them to assist with transfer and pushing. The service is free of charge, but it is essential to book in advance. They can be booked in slots of up to three hours and users will be asked to complete a booking form and present a valid photo ID. Director of Services with Kerry County Council, John Breen said the wheelchairs have the approval and support of the Irish Wheelchair Association, Enable Ireland and the Disability Federation of Ireland. “The aim to is to allow wheelchair users to enjoy our wonderful beaches during the summer months and to ensure their carers can bring those they care for to the beach in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere,” he said.

Kerry Council Council has made specially adapted beach wheelchairs available for wheelchair users and people with disabilities at two Kerry beaches this summer. The Hippocampe wheelchairs are designed to make it easier for beach users with a disability or mobility restrictions to access and enjoy local beaches.

Cllr Terry O’Brien, Service Coordinator with the Irish Wheelchair Association welcomed the new Hippocampe wheelchairs. “A regular wheelchair would get stuck in the sand but these chairs are very ease to move and to manouevre on the sand. This is a great initiative in Kerry and hopefully we can see more of them available at Kerry beaches in the years ahead.” The chairs are available through July and August from noon to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 11am to 7pm at weekends. To make a booking for Ballinskelligs, contact 087 296 5874 or for Inch, call 086 266 3186

With the support of funding from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, two wheelchairs have been purchased and are now available at Inch and Ballinskelligs beaches. A third will shortly be made available at Ballyheigue Beach with the ambition of further chairs beWest Kerry Live 37

Domhnall Mac Síthigh 1951-2017

Danny Thall sa Phortaingéil a tharla an tubaiste Nuair a bhuail amhailt toinne an Naomh Gobnait. D’iompaigh sí béal fuithi i mbun abhann na Minho Is chaith a criú calma i bhfiantas fuar na farraige. Bhí an nae ag druidim go mall chun tíre, An ceathrar gaiscíoch ar crochadh léithi, Ach ainneoin focail mhisnigh a pháirtithe D’éag Danny leis an bhfuacht, go síochánta. Saor tofa a chuir na clocha féin ag allagar, Saor oilte a dhein bád a bhí fite fáiscithe, Tháinig sí i dtír gan mhaisle, gan mháchail, Ar an dtráigh a bhasc na borrthaí a fráma. Thóg Danny croí na ndaoine lena eachtraí líonmhara. Mar réalt reatha gheal sé an spéir Dhuibhneach. Roinn a ghean thar bearta do chultúr a sinsear Ar óg is ar chríonna, ón Rúis go dtí California. Ba shaoi eagna i bprós is san éigse é, Draoi focal ag seanchas is ag scéalaíocht, Fealsamh na gcnoc is na n-oilithreachtaí Ar lorg na manach, ón Íoslainn go Santiago. Uaisleacht thar meon go smior na gcnámh ann, Féinmheas tomhaiste gan aon mhór is fiú ann, Gaiscíoch éachtach bhí séimh le gach duine, Ba theanga labhartha phobal na Gaolainne é. Níor fhág sé slán, ní dúirt faic le héinne Nuair a scaoil sé fén iomramh is déanaí I naomhóg a anama le hais Bhréanainn. Mairfidh a chuimhne faid tá Gael in Éirinn. Bhuail tonn mhillteach bhróin is mhéala gach éinne, ón mBuailtín go Bostún, go bhfuil aithne acu, nó clostrácht,ar Dhomhnall Mac Síthigh, an tUachtarán Mícheál D. Ó hUiginn san áireamh, ar chlos scéala a bháis ar an 9 Meitheamh, ar chósta na hIbéire. Duine de na gaiscígh ba mhó a tháinig ó Chorca Dhuibhne riamh, spreag a éachtaí agus na cuntaisí a thug sé orthu, ar Raidió na Gaeltachta agus ar TG4, iontas agus mórtas i bpobal na leithinise agus in Éireannaigh timpeall na tíre is ar fuaid an domhain. Bhí Danny préamhaithe go doimhin in ithir Bhaile Eaglaise, an áit ar rugadh é, sa bhliain 1951, agus ar chaith sé formhór a shaoil, ach thiomáin roth na samhlaíochta é chun taisteal ar an bhfarraige mhór. Tháinig spiorad na heachtraíochta, a gineadh ann nuair a tháinig sé ar an saol, chun cinn go hóg nuair a chuaigh sé timpeall chósta na hÉireann i naomhóg le Jer Ó Cíobháin, 1975. Lean turasanna farraige go Meiriceá, go dtí an Mheánmhuir, agus go hAlbain sarar thug sé faoin Íoslainn, in Ar Seachrán, luaimh Phaddy Barry. D’fhág sé mionchuntas ar imeachtaí an turais seo i saothar iomráiteach dá chuid, Iomramh Bhréanainn MMXI (An Sagart) 2013, atá ‘ar an leabhar is iontaí ó aon scríbhneoir Duibhneach riamh.’ (An Mons. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta) 38 West Kerry Live

Pictúir: Ted Creedon Fear eisceachtúil, ildánach, ilbhuach é Danny, go raibh an dea-mheabhair agus an deaslámh, saoirseacht chloch is saoirseacht bhád, cumas chun gnímh agus claonadh chun doimhin mhachnaimh, an spioradáltacht agus an daonnacht ar chomhtharrac ann. I Fan Innti (Coiscéim) 2003, tugann sé cur síos ar stair, is ar shaíocht na naomhóige agus conas mar a thóg sé ceann i gCabán tSíle, i mBaile Átha Cliath. Dhein sé féin agus Liam Holden Naomhóg na Tinte nó An Naomh Gobnait, a tugadh, fé ghradam, isteach sa chearnóg os comhair Ardeaglais Naomh Séamas, i Santiago de Compostella, mí an Mheithimh 2016 ar chríochnú Camino na Sáile dó féin agus dá chriú inti. Cé go raibh sí iompaithe bun os cionn ag tonn na tubaiste, níor imigh faic uirthi féin sa bhfarraige agus thug sí an ceathrar criú isteach ar an dtráigh. Is ann a scoilt na tonnta a creatlach. Déarfadh na seandaoine gur bás nádúrtha gan tinneas, gan phian, bás le fuacht na farraige – sin é a fuair Danny agus é i mbun an chúraim ab ansa leis ar domhan. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige! Ba phearsa thaithneamhach, shéimh, chuideachtúil é a thuill meas agus gean mar chainteoir, mar smaointeoir, mar mhúinteoir, mar chumarsáidí agus mar chara. Is é a bhí buíoch beannachtach admhálach as na buanna ilghnéitheacha go léir a fuair sé óna shinsir. Bhain sé aoibhneas as an saol, as an ndúiche álainn inar mhair sé agus bhí fís aige ina raibh Dia, an duine agus an nádúr fite fuaite ina chéile díreach mar a bhí ag manaigh na Luath-Chríostaíochta in Éirinn. Ar nós na misteach i ngach aon chultúr ar domhan, bhíodh sé coitianta ag sú na diagachta agus na filíochta ón áilneacht a bhain leis an ruidín is lú, mar an dreoilín a bhí á spreagadh chun fanacht coitianta ar a pheann nó guardal Wilson a tháinig mar spiorad nó aingeal tríd an gceo chuige, nóisean a théann siar go dtí an litríocht Cheilteach. B’é fealsamh na miúine é go raibh focail fháidhiúla aige i Margaí Falsa (Súil Seilge) Coiscéim, 2007 nuair a bhí an stoirm eacnamaíochta ar tí réabadh tríd an dtír: ‘Is maith é an tine agus rud le n-ithe’ Má bhí spioradaltacht doimhin mar chuid de dhlúth is d’inneach Danny, ba chnapán breá de rógaire é, ag an am céanna, a raibh féith an ghrinn go feirc ann agus é thar a bheith macánta i dtaobh a lochtaí agus a easnaimh féin. Tá an cuntas ar an sranntarnach in Iomramh Bhréanainn agus sa leabhar Sranntarnach/Snoring le Ponc Press ar an mblúire is greannmhaire agus is saibhre teangan sa Nua-Ghaeilge nó in aon teanga. Deascéal dóibhsean nach bhfuil an Ghaolainn ar a dtoil acu go bhfuil an saothar iomlán aistrithe go Béarla ag Camilla Dinkel agus Danny agus nach fada go mbeidh sé ag teacht ar an bhfód, chomh maith le leabhar ar an iascaireacht, agus tá súil againn go mbeidh ceann eile, ar a laghad, ar Camino na Sáile, chomh maith leis an scannán atá ar bun ag Dónal Ó Céilleachair. Chinntigh sé go mbeadh a oidhreacht ríshaibhir ar fáil do na glúnta a thiocfaidh inár ndiaidh trí mheán a dhialanna, na dtaifead a dhein Raidió na Gaeltachta, na leabhartha a cuireadh i gcló agus na

gcláracha teilifíse go raibh sé páirteach iontu. Is mian le gach ball d’Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, go raibh Danny mar chrann taca aici le blianta, comhbhrón ó chroí a dheanamh lena bhean uasal, Máire, a chlann, Cormac agus a bhean, Brenda, a iníonacha, Róisín agus Orlaith; a dheirféaracha, Siobhán agus Áine, a dheartháireacha Pat, John Joe agus Gearóid, muintir a chéile, agus leis na criúnna go léir a roinn bia agus bord, cruatan agus bogra leis, go háirithe, Breandán Ó Beaglaoich, Pádraig Ó Duinnín agus Liam Ó Maonlaoi i bhí fairis go dtí an neomat deireanach agus a dhein a mile dícheall é a thabhairt slán. Go gcúití Dia a saothar agus a ndlúthchairdeas leo! Tá léiriú sa liosta seo (agus níl ann ach blaiseadh beag, cheal spáis dá bhfuil curtha i gcrích aige) ar dhílseacht Danny dá phobal féin i gCorca Dhuibhne agus d’Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, go raibh sé páirteach leo i ngach aon imeacht cultúrtha gur fiú trácht air sa dúiche leis na blianta: Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta, Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid, Meitheal Filí an Dísirt, Ceiliúradh Lughnasa & Cúrsaí Gaeilge do Dhaoine Fásta ag Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, Scoil Samhraidh na nOidí Bunscoile & Cúrsaí Gaelainne Choláistí Chorca Dhuibhne. Tograí eile a raibh sé rannpháirteach iontu ná Idir Chruach is Chuan Scéim Chéatadáin don Ealaín (2006), Scéim an Scríbhneora sna Bunscoileanna Gaeltachta, Seoda – Cnuasach scéalta, amhrán & tomhaiseanna don Aos Óg (2013) Togra Logainmneacha Chnoc Bhréanainn (2015). Saothair litríochta eile uaidh ab ea Allagar na gCloch (Púca Press) 2005, aistrithe go Béarla ag Caitríona Ní Chathail; Sligiríní (Púca Press) 2013, aistrithe ag Aodhagán Ó Muircheartaigh; Sranntarnach (Ponc Press) 2016, aistrithe ag Camilla Dinkel. Bhuaigh sé an Cómórtas do Dhreas Cainte an Oireachtais, sa Daingean, 2001 agus i dTrá Lí, 2003 agus Corn Bhab Feiritéir don scéalaíocht, i gCorcaigh, 2005 agus duais Oireachtais don bhfilíocht, 2006. Beifear i gcónaí buíoch go bhfág Danny an oidhreacht seo ag a phobal féin. Mairfidh a chraobh ar an bhfál…

Puck Fair 2017 A festival almost as synonymous with Ireland and its culture as St Patrick’s Day, the annual Puck Fair celebrations provide a unique draw not only to those visiting our shores from far off climes, but also to Irish natives living abroad, who use the annual event as a fun and exciting opportunity to return home. This year is no different, with thousands of Irish emigrants planning a visit to the green, green grass of home this summer to coincide with the 3-day festival, which takes place from the 10th to the 12th of August Monika Dukarska, 2009 and 2016 World Coastal Rowing Champion, this year’s festival ambassador, a Polish native who moved to Co. Kerry at the age of 16, “I feel so privileged to have been asked to be an ambassador of this year’s Puck Fair festival. I’m proud to call Kerry my home and to play an important role in such a well-known and historical event that means so much to the people of Killorglin and the county as a whole. I can’t wait for the festivities to kick off and I look forward to being a part of the buzz and excitement in August!” Long-running Chairman of Puck Fair Declan Mangan, having worked as Chairman of the voluntary committee for over 40 years, was quick to point out why he is hugely proud of his important role, saying: “There’s a reason I keep returning to this post year in, year out – it’s a hugely important part of Killorglin’s past and present and it is a great deal of fun. I get such a thrill out of seeing visitors flock to the town each August to witness the crowning of King Puck and to see what our beautiful village has to offer. It brings locals and tourists together and highlights Killorglin as an important focal point within the Irish tourism industry.” Commenting on what visitors can expect, Mr. Mangan added; “Highlights of this year’s Puck Fair festival include musical entertainment on the town square stage to be provided by Brass & Co (Thursday 10th August), The Elvis Spectacular Show (Friday 11th August) and The Ultimate Garth Brooks Experience (Saturday 12th August). There will also be a wide range of children’s entertainment taking place in the village across the three days of the festival as well as market stalls, street performances and a host of activities for all the family. Information and updates on this can be found at www.puckfair. ie in the lead up to the festival and we look forward to having you all there.”

Now over 400 years old, Puck Fair is one of Ireland’s most ancient traditional celebrations, reportedly dating back to 1613 when King James I issued a charter that granted legal status to the existing fair in Killorglin at that time. The festival revolves around the coronation of a wild mountain goat, fondly and famously known as ‘King Puck’, who is crowned by The Queen of Puck; traditionally a young girl from a local primary school. There are many legends surrounding the origins of the Fair, with one particularly popular tale suggesting that it began during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the 17th century, when a wild goat broke away from its herd to warn the people of Killorglin of an impending attack. Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Wedding Congratulations to Gearóid O’Shea, son of Eileen and the late Michael O Shea, Upper Camp and Sandra Byrne, daughter of Paul and Mary Byrne, Blennerville who were married recently in Portugal. Gearóid is the Annascaul GAA Club goalie through many years of triumph and he and Sandra are ardent supporters of Annascaul Coiste na n-óg and Annascaul Ladies Club. Along with Gaelic football, Gearóid also plays with Camp United Soccer Club and Sandra too has excelled in swimming over the years. A well matched union for sure, we all wish Gearóid and Sandra the best of luck in their future life together. As well as all of the relatives and guests who travelled to the wedding were the O’Sheas from San Francisco, Gearoid’s brother, Kevin, Kathleen, Danny and Conor and Sandra’s cousin James Herlihy also travelled from the USA to be with the happy couple on their special day. Birthday Party Congratulations to Máire Deane, Knockglossmore, Camp who enjoyed a wonderful birthday celebration at Fitzgerald’s Junction Bar, Camp on Saturday night. And that was not all, in the midst of the celebrations, Maire’s boyfriend, David O’Sullivan went down on one knee and in a most romantic setting outside the Restaurant in the glow of a million stars, he proposed to the lovely Máire, who by all accounts graciously accepted. We all wish Máire and David the very best of luck and congratulations on your engagement. Up West Kerry And the West was Awake on Sunday 10th July in Páirc an Ághasaig when West Kerry defeated Legion 1-18 to 0-18 points in what was an exciting pulsating game of football. West Kerry who it seems went in as the underdogs but soon showed that they were anything but, playing a mighty game and over all the odds in the local media, they came out victorious placing them now in the final 8 in the Co. Championship. Our own Annascaul club players Campmen James Crean, Andrew Finn and Eoghan Curry were worth their weight in gold as was Jason Hickson and Cathal Ferriter. It was a tremendous feat for all of West Kerry and we wish them continued success in the remainder of the championship. Amazing Athletic Feat An athletic feat of huge magnitude, that is surely what the young Annascaul man Shane Finn has achieved over his 24 day marathon run which finished in Dingle town outside his own WK Fitness Centre on Saturday evening. Many sporting greats met him along the way and our own Tommy Doyle winning Kerry Football Captain 1986 was there to support Shane when passing through Cork. Shane’s father Tim was cycling by his side all the way and well done to all the Finn family and to his mother Josie, sister and brother and his cousin Jamie as well as uncles, aunts and friends who have all put so much into supporting Shane in his marathon achievement. Shane himself thanked all of them on his arrival in Dingle. In the summer of 2014 Shane Finn ran 12 Marathons in 12 Days from Dublin to Dingle raising €31,640 for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Ireland. Shane has now doubled that journey and the young Fitness Instructor surpassed his target of €100,000 while passing through his home place, the Dingle Peninsula on Saturday. Shane is in no way pretentious and he took time out to stop and stand for photographs with little children and to greet people all along the way. At Blennerville, Camp and Annascaul, there were crowds waiting for him every mile of the road. Congratulations Shane, you have earned a place high in the accolades of our local heroes. Obituary Sympathy is extended to Mary Ellen Barry, Camp, her sister Joanne and brother Pat and all of the extended family on the recent death of her mother, Kathleen Galvin (nee O’Shea), Leataoibh, Ballyferriter. Difference Between a Torn Muscle and a Muscle Spasm When somebody presents in clinic with a muscle injury, it is important to first determine whether it is a spasm or a tear. A spasm/cramp can often be worked out in a treatment session with deep tissue massage, maybe some dry needling and stretching, allowing almost immediate return to training. A muscle tear takes much longer to recover from, the length of time greatly depending on the degree of damage. It may take several treatments along with an injury specific rehabilitation program.

tear, the more the muscle fibers that are torn. When somebody tears a muscle they will often feel something give-way within the muscle and the muscle will immediately shut down preventing further activity. A sharp stabbing pain in the affected muscle is usually also the first symptom as the injury occurs. The affected muscle will then quickly become very tender to the touch and some swelling/inflammation usually also occurs. In severe pulls, bruising may also be present, though this usually comes up a day or two later. Also with sever tears a little gap may be visible in the muscle where the fibers have torn apart.

What is a Muscle Spasm?

Pulled Muscle Causes

A muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction of that muscle. It usually occurs suddenly, can cause significant pain, usually limiting the use of the muscle for a short period of time.

Pulled muscles are usually the result of not preparing the muscle for work through proper progressive training loading, not warming up sufficiently , not allowing enough time for recovery from training, over-using the muscle but mostly it is the result of placing too much tension on the muscle too quickly often in a position of maximum stretch.

Eddie O’Grady

Causes of Spasm Spasms in a muscle are usually caused by problems such as; overuse, poor hydration, electrolyte imbalances, insufficient blood flow to the muscle, or nerve compression. What is a Muscle pull/Tear? A pulled muscle is actually a tear in the muscle tissue due to over-strain. The more severe the

higher the intensity in training , the more time needed to recover. So for an athlete, periods of maximal performance require more recovery time.

Prop. Gavin O’Grady

I’ve been at home caring for my children for a number of years. I want to return to work. Can I get help to develop my skills so that I am more employable? Answer Springboard provides places on courses from certificate, to degree, to post-graduate level – Levels 6 to 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications. There are many different courses available that lead to qualifications in areas where there are employment opportunities. Most of the courses last for one year or less. If you are a homemaker with a previous history of employment you don’t have to be getting a social welfare payment to qualify for Springboard. To qualify, you must have been a homemaker for a minimum of 12 months prior to your Springboard application and be ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland for at least three of the five years before your entry to Springboard. You must also provide supporting documentation to show you meet these requirements. You can do this by signing a declaration before a Commissioner for Oaths, attesting to your status. Further information about this is available on springboardcourses.ie. Most of the courses start in September. Details on available courses and eligibility are on springboardcourses.ie. You do not have to pay course fees or charges while you are unemployed. To apply for a Springboard course, you choose the course(s) you are interested in on springboardcourses.ie and apply online, following the instructions on the website. If Springboard doesn’t meet your needs, you can find information about other ways to go back to education on citizensinformation.ie. Further information is also available from the Citizens Information Service West Kerry Live 51

Cromane GAA Seniors: Cromane 0-6, Ballylongford 2-9 Cromane lost out to table-toppers Ballylongford in this Division 5 clash on Sunday in Cromane. Apart from the opening quarter we never really got going, missing numerous potential starters due to holidays, injuries, and other reasons. We still had a panel of 20 available and the lads that took to the field gave their all. We led by 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes with two Paudie McCarthy points from play and a free converted by Darren Houlihan. Then Ballylongford got a grip on the game and struck for two goals in the space of ten minutes. By halftime we had only managed to add another point to our tally (a fine outside of the boot effort by Liam Teahan) as we trailed by 2-5 to 0-4. Again, we started the better team but we had no directness in our play and ran down two many cul-de-sacs. We lost possession numerous times and Ballylongford punished us on the break. Darren Houlihan (free) and Mikey Houlihan cut the gap to two goals five minutes into the second half but we failed to hit the target after that as we went looking for goals too early. Next up for our seniors is an away game this weekend in Tralee against Austin Stacks B. Team: Paudie McMahon; Sean Teahan, Eoghan Walsh, Danny Connor; Liam Teahan (0-1), John Michael Foley, Finbar Casey, Liam Walsh, Darren Houlihan (0-2 frees); Matt Colborne, Mikey Houlihan (0-1), Shane Ahern; Emmet Casey, Paudie McCarthy (0-2), Cian O’Keeffe. Subs: Stephen Foley for M Colborne 50m, Eamonn O’Connor for C O’Keeffe 40m, Martin Sweeney for S Ahern 50m, Jason Clifford for S Teahan 55m, Danny O’Shea. B Team: Mid Kerry B League: Cromane 0-11, Keel 2-10 The Cromane B team began their Mid Kerry League campaign with a five-point defeat against Keel in Cromane last Tuesday evening. Keel didn’t have it all their own way as we made a very good start, leading by 0-6 to 0-2 after 15 minutes. Paudie McCarthy kicked three fine points for us in this period, with Finbar Casey, Cian O’Keeffe, and Martin Sweeney also splitting the posts. Terry O’Sullivan kicked Keel’s best score of the opening quarter. 52 West Kerry Live

Keel (who had new Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin at full-forward) got back into the game in the 20th minute courtesy of a classy goal from O’Sullivan who chipped his namesake Sean in the Cromane goal. At half time it was all to play for though as we led 0-7 to 1-2. Keel dominated the third quarter with Gary Nagle impressing at midfield and opening the second half scoring. A goal from Dylan Prendergast then edged them in front with 20 left: 2-5 to 0-8. Our lads tried their hardest to get back into the game, but some costly turnovers around the middle allowed Keel to break and open up a six-point lead with ten left (2-10 to 0-10). A Lee Carey point edged us closer before we had a late chance to really pile on the pressure but Paudie McCarthy’s penalty was saved by the Keel goalkeeper Chris Clifford. Final score: Cromane 0-11, Keel 2-10. Cromane Team: Sean Og O’Sullivan; Karl McCarthy, Liam Teahan, Shane Ahern; Stephen Foley, Finbar Casey, Patrick Moroney; Emmet Casey, Jason Clifford; Sean Teahan, Paudie McCarthy, Cian O’Keeffe; Martin Sweeney, Lee Carey, Kevin Casey. Senior County League: Our seniors- sponsored by Larkin’s Bar and Restaurant and Kelly’s Londis Top Shop were up against Austin Stacks in Division 1 -Round 8 of the County League. Played in Milltown Castlemaine GAA Grounds in wet conditions, it was the home side who got the first score, a pointed 45 by Jack McCarthy. MC were very unfortunate to lose their captain Jeremiah Hayes to injury in the 4th minute – he was replaced by Eoin O’ Brien. AS got their first score soon after with a pointed free by David Mannix. The 9th minute saw a cracking goal off the boot of Shane Murphy of MC –following a great move between Alan Hickey and Cathal Moriarty. MC were guilty of some passing errors as well as missed scoring chances. However, a free from Donal Dennehy off his left boot gave them 4 point lead at the end of the first quarter. In the 18th minute Cathal Moriarty for MC was heading for goal after brilliantly intercepting a short kick out from AS David Hennessy. He had to be content with a point after it went over the crossbar giving MC a score line of 1:03 to AS 0:01. AS were guilty too of poor kicking -missing an easy free in the 18th. They redeemed themselves immediately when David Mannix popped over a point and in the 22nd minute, Darragh O’ Brien gave AS another point. Austin Stack’s grew in confidence and were causing lots of problems for the MC back line. Despite the tight marking of David Roche, Shane O’ Callaghan managed to pop over a point and in the 25th minute, Stack’s added another point which came from a mark. (MC 1:03, AS: 5 points.) After a gap of 10 minutes without scoring, MC seemed destined for a score by way of solid work by Alan Hickey but a final stray pass gave possession back to the visitors. The home side grafted hard and were rewarded in the 29th minute with a well taken free by Jack McCarthy. Stacks did have a chance to score before half time by way of a free but it went wide of the posts.

arty kicking a superb point for the home side, giving them a one point lead. Gavin McKenna and Jonathan O’ Sullivan linked up well together and a free for a foul on Gavin was converted by Jack McCarthy to give a score line of MC: 1/6, AS: 7 points. David Mannix from AS added another point- for his side and this was quickly followed by another point from Fiachna Mangan and a further point in the 12 th minute from play gave AS the lead for the first time in the game. AS: 10 points, MC: 1/06. Shane Guthrie received a black card and so AS had to adjust their mid field setting. MC introduced Pa Wrenn in the 16th minute-having just completed his shift as a paramedic. A fisted point by young Eoin O’ Brien brought the sides level once again. The home side were guilty of some bad errors in passing and scoring opportunities and so Austin Stacks punished them with two quick points from play. MC suffered another blow when goal scorer Shane Murphy had to withdraw due to injury. Kieran O’ Carroll came in replace him. The game was delayed for several minutes due to an injury to Gavin Horan from MC. On resumption, Jack McCarthy pointed a free for MC to bring them to within one point of their opponents. A copious amount of coloured cards was issued in the closing stages of the game and a free to MC was calmly popped over by Jack McCarthy to level the scores at full time. MC: 1/09, AS: 12 points. AS are at home to Glenbeigh Glencar on July 23rd at 2 pm while MC will be at home to Dr. Crokes on August 13th at 3 pm. Keane’s Supervalu Minor County Championship: Congratulations to Mid Kerry on their victory over South Kerry in a thrilling encounter on Tuesday last. Winning by the narrowest of margins, great credit is due to the players and management. Maith thú to Aaron O’ Brien, David Leane, Dylan O’ Neill, Killian Kerins, Daniel Cronin and John Dennehy from our own club who are part of the panel. Kerry Gaels/Conway Cup. Congratulations to former club player Marcus Mangan who captained the Kerry Gaels to win the Conway cup in London recently. Well done Marcus! Senior Ladies Championship: Congratulations to our senior ladies who defeated Dr. Crokes last week by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling game of football. Final score: Milltown Listry-4/08, Dr. Crokes:4/07. Special thanks to senior players Damian Murphy and Nigel Wrenn for all the time they put into training these girls. They now face Kilcummin on Monday July 24th. Marriages: Comhghairdeas to Mike Quirke Farran, former senior player with our club, on his marriage last Saturday to Stephanie Walsh. May you have many years of happiness together. Current senior player Shane Murphy will walk up the aisle on Saturday next to marry his fiancée Laura Nugent. We wish you both many years of wedded bliss.

Half time score: MC: 1/04, AS: 5 points. Alan Hickey made way for Nigel Wrenn at half time for the home side. Despite a lot of possession it was the visitors the visitors who notched up the first 2 points of the second half. Jonathan O’ Sullivan was very unlucky for MC when he tried to chip the Stacks keeper-David Hennessy but he was denied by a great save. A resultant 45 was kicked wide by MC’s Jack McCarthy. Jack Morgan pointed for AS in the 4th minute and David Mannix added another to his tally by way of a free soon after. In the 8th minute, a good move by Gavin Horan resulted in Cathal Mori54 West Kerry Live

Seán Enright foilsithe ag Merrion ‘After the Rebellion came the trials. 3,226 men and women were rounded up and brought to Richmond Barracks in Dublin, where they were screened for trial, deportation or release. In the following three weeks of May 1916 nearly 2,000 men and women were deported and interned. 160 prisoners were tried by Field General Courts Martial. These trials were held in camera - no press or public were admitted, None of the prisoners were legally represented or permitted to give sworn evidence in their own defence. Most trials lasted about 20 minutes or less. 90 death sentences were passed and 15 were carried out. This book provides a powerful analysis of an ‘uncomfortable’ moment in history when ‘the rule of law’ gave way to political imperatives.

The trials and executions took place while the outcome of the Great Troubles hung in the balance. The ‘government’ judged that publication of the trial records would damage army recruitment and the war effort, so the trial records were suppressed and most were thought to have been destroyed. But since the turn of the century more and more trial records have surfaced, casting dramatic new insights into what took place.’ - Merrion
