Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 8th August will be “The Beguiled”. Starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst this is an atmospheric thriller from acclaimed writer/director Sofia Coppola. The story unfolds during the Civil War, at a Southern girls’ boarding school. Its sheltered young women take in an injured enemy soldier. As they provide refuge and tend to his wounds, the house is taken over with sexual tension and dangerous rivalries, and taboos are broken in an unexpected turn of events. The following week on Tuesday 15th the feature will be the latest film from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk. This universally lauded World War II thriller tells the story of the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk before Nazi forces can take hold. Dunkirk serves up emotionally satisfying spectacle, delivered by a writer-director in full command of his craft and brought to life by a gifted ensemble cast that honours the fact-based story. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance co-star, with longtime Nolan collaborator Hans Zimmer providing the score. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Farm Inspections – Kow Your Rights On-farm inspections are a requirement under EU regulations and farm scheme terms and conditions. The proportion of farms selected for inspection and the notice of inspection required varies by scheme. At the start of the inspection the Department inspector is obliged to introduce himself and provide ID. Inspections may be combined but all no-notice inspections will be separate to notice inspections, unless the farmer requests otherwise. At the end of the inspection, the farmer will receive a copy of the inspector’s report. You will be asked to sign the report but you are not obliged to; signing the report does not imply that you accept the findings of the inspection. You have a right to seek a review of or to appeal any Department decision. Eligibility inspections are carried out to verify that you meet scheme eligibility requirements. This includes land eligibility inspections, which check that areas declared correspond to the area you farm and to ensure no overlapping or duplicate claims. Between 65-85% of land eligibility inspections will be carried out by remote sensing. Following a campaign by IFA at national and EU level, pro-rata tolerances on the determination of eligible land for area based schemes have been introduced. IFA is insisting that the Department makes clear to inspectors that new tolerances must be interpreted and applied in a flexible and practical way. Cross compliance inspections check that land is kept in Good Agricultural and Environment Conditions and that Statutory Maneagement Requirements such as cattle and sheep IDs, nitrates, animal welfare, feed and food hygiene, etc. are adhered to. The inspector is required to allow certain tolerances in respect of sheep and cattle ID and registration.

Notice Of Inspection In the new Charter, it has been agreed that there will be a clear separation between unannounced and announced inspections, strengthening the position of farmers. The Department has agreed to conduct all no notice inspections separately unless the farmer requests otherwise. Cross compliance inspections involving Feed and Food Hygiene (Statutory Management Requirement 4), TSE (SMR 9) and the Welfare of Calves, Pigs and Other Animals (SMR 11 – 13) are no notice. Where these issues are part of a full cross compliance inspection, the Department will carry out all other cross compliance requirements at a later stage, unless the farmer requests otherwise. Under the Charter, the Department has agreed to provide notice for all other cross compliance and land eligibility inspections. These include animal identification, ground eligibility, Nitrates, Natura, pesticides, as well as Good Agriculture and Environmental conditions (GAEC).

• ID and registration checks will be carried out on a sample basis. • Penning, in a secure cattle crush, will only be necessary when problems are identified. • In the case of sheep, penning will be required for a sample of the flock. • Specific protocols for lowland and hill sheep inspections to provide adequate notification and tolerances to take account of welfare and lambing issues, and of unique circumstances and losses in hills. TOP 5 REASONS FOR BREACH OF CROSS COMPLIANCE Cattle identification:- 1)AIMS problems in relation to movements, births and deaths; 2) Tags missing on cattle (1 or 2 tags); 3)Animal passport discrepancies; 4) Cattle herd register not up-to-date. Pesticides:- 1) Unregulated products; 2)Incomplete records; 3) No warning sign on chemical store; 4) Inadequate pesticide store. Nitrates: 1)Inadequate collection of livestock manure; 2)Inadequate management of manure storage facilities; 3)Structural defects in storage facilities; 4) Failure to minimise the creation of soiled water; 5)Keeping within organic N limit – (170kg and 250kg N/ha require a derogation) Sheep:- 1) Inadequate flock register; 2) Sheep census returns and discrepancies; 3) Tagging issue. Good Agricultural & Environmental Conditions (GEAC):- 1)Poaching/rutting of permanent pasture; 2) Encroachment of invasive species; 3)Noxious weeds; .4)Stockproof boundaries Dingle Food Festival & Dingle Salt Grass Beef Project (DSGBP) At the recent launch of the Dingle Food Festival at the Dingle Cookery School, some of the beef from the D.S.G.B.P. was showcased and presented to the invited audience. In attendance were members of the restaurant and food trade, the farming community, the Credit Union, who funded the project, the local school and the six transition year students themselves, who ran the project over the past 18 months. Just to remind you, six TY students from PCD purchased six Hereford Heifer calves in Febuary 2016 with funding from Dingle Credit Union and they were housed and looked after by them and Colm Murphy on his farm. They were completely out-wintered in winter 2016 and are being readied for the Dingle Food festival in late September 2017. Reader on “salt-tainted” grass on Murphy’s pasture, they are expected to have a distinct taste or flavour particular to the region. Time will tell, but with the support of the local restaurants, The Global Village and John Benny’s and the Chart House, one heifer was slaughtered by Mike Cahillane’s Butchers, Killorglin, and hanged for 28 days, and is now available from these restaurants. Many more are expected to follow suit during the Food Festival and beyond, when the remaining heifers are slaughtered. When asked what type of feed these cattle received, it was reassuring to know that they were vegetarian, and fed nothing but the finest West Kerry grass, and a small amount of maintenance feed, out-doors to ensure that they remained in good condition. So, look out for them, at the food festival. The TY students will be selling both raw and cooked versions of this product at the festival, over the few days, and Sheehy’s SPAR will also sell prime cuts until the initial supply is exhausted. From a satisfaction point of view, those presented on the night sampled some fabulous rib-eye, cooked by our own Masterchef, Mark murphy, and all were of the opinion that if it wasn’t the best ever beef they tasted, it was up there with the best. Not a bad accolade for the young men who took responsibility for the animals over the past year and a half. So if you get a chance to get your hands on some, don’t pass up the opportunity.

KT Farm Improvement Plans Deadline Extended It was announced recently that the deadline for submission of data for Farm Improvement Plans in Knowledge Transfer Groups will be extended until 21st August, 2017. The 31st July deadline for holding meetings of KT Groups remains in place. The extension of the deadline will allow advisors and planners further time to finalise actions required under the Scheme. It will also enable vets to finalise Animal Health Measures for farmer participants. The Knowledge Transfer Programme is funded under the Rural Development Programme and involves group interaction and one-to-one advice across a range of sectors. Funding of €100m is allocated for the scheme across the dairy, beef, equine, sheep, tillage and poultry sectors. Under the Knowledge Transfer Groups, participants attend meetings and approved Knowledge Transfer events which, together with a tailored Farm Improvement Plan, will support farmers in addressing a range of competitiveness and sustainability challenges facing the sector.

Is Fake News Being Served Up About Diabetes? Irene Ní Fhlannúra As politicians and other newsmakers take time off for the Summer, filling up news columns with sensational stories becomes a bit of a task. The media often resort to food and beverage stories to fill some of the gaps left by our wandering celebrities. One news story that grabbed many headlines last week was that of a Danish study which reported that drinking alcohol three to four times a week reduces the risk of diabetes in both men and women. Researchers concluded that “going for a drink or consuming alcohol at home most days was associated with a reduced risk of 27 per cent in men and 32 percent in women, compared with abstaining”. Don’t reach for the bottle just yet as there are a few little factors we need to consider before we write the party invites! This is not the first time that researchers looked at the link of moderate consumption of alcohol and diabetes risk, as similar studies can be found dating back to 1995. However, with modern techniques for the collection of statistics and the large number of respondents in this study, over 70,000 participants, these results are convincing. Interestingly, many of the other studies had similar conclusions. It appears that alcohol when taken in moderation increases the efficiency of insulin at getting glucose inside cells. However, a closer look at the studies reveal that beer and wine drinkers enjoy this positive effect whereas gin and spirit drinkers have an 80 percent increase in developing diabetes. Wine has the most benefits, more likely to do with a high polyphenol content found in red wine. Polyphenols are antioxidants found in certain plant-based foods which protect and repair cells from free radical damage. Another factor to consider is that both wine and beer are typically consumed with food in the countries in which the studies were conducted and this too would have a great impact on the end results. In Denmark, less than 10 percent of the population are overweight. Compare this to the Irish population with 30 percent either overweight or obese. If the same study was carried out in Ireland, it is doubtful that the results would be similar. In Ireland, nine out of every ten Type 2 Diabetes patients are overweight or obese and world-wide studies unanimously conclude that maintaining a healthy weight is the greatest way to reduce your risk of developing diabetes. Losing 7 to 10 percent of your current weight can cut your chance of developing diabetes in half according to a Harvard study on diabetes prevention. The Danes also enjoy a healthier lifestyle than us with more families spending longer hours outdoors in nature every week compared to us. They have shorter working weeks, greater benefits from a resourceful tax regime and have the number one Health Care system in the world! The Danish con-

Danno Donates His Dollars Like many bars, Danno’s in Dingle had a fine collection of Dollars, sent from all over the USA, adorning the walls. Unlike most however, Danno took them down and donated the lot to the RNLI. The donation of $737 was made in memory of Craig Reid who was lost off the fishing vessel “Apollo” near Orkney. The Apollo regularily lands in Dingle. The cheque was presented by Danno to Michael Brosnan (RNLI) and crewmembers of the Apollo. clusion may not translate as well in Ireland as those extra few drinks could be the breaking of a stressed out, ill-fed, fat, sedentary body already on the brink of diabetes plus many of the other lifestyle-related illnesses. The good news is that there are less risky ways to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. Losing weight and getting more active are joint firsts on the list. Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose, reducing the stress on the insulin-making cells. No need for long, sweaty workouts, as most studies conclude that 30 minutes of brisk walking everday can cut your risk by 30%. Ditch any sugary drinks including fruit juices and drink more water, herbal teas, black and green tea. For every 330ml serving of fizzy drinks there is a 25 percent increase of developing diabetes! Bump up the plant-power in your diet from wholegrains, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds to at least 80 percent of your total diet. Plantbased foods offer the greatest protection from every degenerative chronic disease including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, most cancers, autoimmune disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Swapping red meat and processed meat for healthier protein foods such as nuts, wholegrains, legumes, organic poultry and fresh fish lowered diabetes risk by up to 35% according to a study printed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2009. There are thousands of studies that point to a healthy lifestyle and honest, wholesome food to have the most overall health benefits and protection against all chronic diseases in the Western world. Research is needed for ongoing health improvements but careful interpretation is vital for results to have an effective impact on our health status. Unfortunately, many studies are biased, misrepresented or funded by the organization that most benefits from the results. Much of the research that makes for sensational headlines can be taken with a pinch of salt, which may or may not increase your risk of high blood pressure! Monkfish, Summer Vegetables, Basil and Lemon Dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Monkfish, expensive but worth it as a treat. Monkfish has very firm flesh and cooks a little different than more delicate fish. When cooking monkfish, it can take a little more heat than most fish so don’t be afraid to cook it as if you were cooking a beef steak. By this I mean start hot, brown all sides and then turn down to finish cooking. It has a sweet flavour and will go very well with summer vegetables like courgettes and tomatoes. You will find the basil and lemon dressing nice and light and perfect for this time of the year.

20ml sherry vinegar

To cook the fish

½ lemon, juiced

Put a pan over a medium to high heat. Season the fish with salt and pepper. Once the pan is hot, add a little oil and then put the monkfish pieces in the pan. Remember not to overcrowd the pan. Get a nice brown colour on each side and turn the pan down to about half way. Cook the fish for about 5-7 minutes depending on the thickness. When the fish is ready, there should be a little spring when pressed in the centre of each piece. Once you feel this turn off the heat - don’t worry if your fish is a little undercooked, it is but if you leave it in the warm pan off the heat for about 5 minutes it should be cooked to perfection. While the fish is resting, warm the vegetables.

handful basil, finely chopped Method Start with the vegetables, in a large pot add a little olive oil. Add the diced shallots and pinch of salt. Allow this to cook slowly for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a minute or so. Next add a little more oil and add the aubergine and the courgette. They will take about 10 minutes or so. Stir the pan every few minutes to make sure they are not burning or sticking to the pan. Once you feel they are almost ready add the tomatoes, tarragon and a pinch of salt. Stir well and taste for seasoning. Once you are happy with the taste remove it from the heat. For the dressing Whisk the oil and vinegar together well. Add the lemon and then the basil. Season well with salt and pepper.

To serve Place the warm vegetables in the centre of a plate. Slice the monk fish and place it on top of the vegetables. Drizzle some of the dressing around the fish. Enjoy!!!!

WEDNESDAY August 9th

Congratulations to Tom Hanafin the well-deserved winner of the Milltown Community Person of the Year award for 2017. Tom has been involved in every aspect of community life in Milltown since he was a teenager, many events would not have been possible without his enthusiastic support whether it be supplying a much-needed microphone at short notice, setting up and testing street speakers, managing light and sound for concerts in the hall, climbing up a ladder to put up bunting and equally important to be there when everyone else had left to take it down again afterwards. Tom is a man without the word “no” in his vocabulary and his renowned attention to detail and belief in doing things right has rubbed off on everyone who has worked with him over the years. Thank's to the Plough Bar for sponsoring the beautiful glass bowl presented to Tom on the night. His name joins those of Willie Hanafin and Denis O'Mahony on the Stephen Lawlor commemorative shield which is sponsored by Anne Lawlor, Stephens mother who travelled from Longford to attend. Thanks to Bernie and The Plough for organising the music and food. But most of all thanks to everyone who turned up especially Tom's family and all who kept the surprise a secret. - Milltown Community Council

The Dingle Men’s Shed Fr. Jim Sheehy The words “Men’s Shed” have been simmering in my mind for many years since a priest friend, working in Australia, first introduced the subject. Although I was in England at the time and the setting in which I worked was not suited to a Men’s Shed, my first reaction was: What a wonderful Idea. I learned that the idea originated in Australia in the mid 1990’s. The movement initially arose out a sense of the aloneness and isolation experienced especially in the lives of middle aged and older men who had found themselves unemployed as a result of a depression in the job market at the time. Many of these men had skills and felt that these skills could be used and indeed passed on to others within the Men’s Shed setting to the benefit not only of its members but, also, of the local community. On becoming employed again most members kept contact and continued to be involved in some way with their Men’s Shed because of the social life and friendships that had developed. It was out of a deep concern for the social isolation, the aloneness of those who felt excluded in Ireland during the boom years of the 21st Century that urged John McEvoy, a Wexford man, after he had learned about the Men’s Shed movement in Australia, to travel there and explore the movement for himself. He was impressed with what he saw and came back determined to introduce the idea of the Men’s Shed in Ireland. The crash and downturn in 2008 forced him into immediate action and by 2009 the first Shed was up and running and within three years there were over 100 Sheds in the country. . For me the opportunity to air the idea of a Men’s Shed in Dingle arose when I happened to meet Séamus O’Hara of the NEWKD after a meeting, at the Diseart, where he had arranged for a speaker to come and talk to a small group of people interested in setting up a group for the support of the Bereaved. The group was formed and has run very successfully on a monthly basis since and, of course is always open and welcoming to whoever may feel the need to attend. Aware that the NEWKD had been set up to promote community initiatives I asked Seamus if they had thought about a Men’s Shed in Dingle; he explained that they had but they were unable to find a suitable location. Later while reflecting on our conversation it occurred to me that there were two sizable sheds with a separate entrance and yard; a cubicle house, with adjoining hay shed both no longer in use. They were in good condition and as they were built by my late brother Tom I felt that nothing would please him more that seeing his handiwork being used to serve the community. After discussing my thoughts with the family I suggested the idea to Seamus as a possible way forward. He and Pat Brosnan came to view the site; they seemed impressed and within a week the possibility of a Men’s Shed in Dingle was advertised in the West Kerry Live magazine and in the Kerryman and a meeting was arranged at the NEWKD Office in Cooleen. Twelve men attended; all enthusiastic about the idea of a Men’s Shed in Dingle. They decided to begin by viewing the site with which they seemed happy enough but there were questions about the location in Ballintaggart, two miles from Dingle as they wondered whether it might be too far out; so they decided that they should try again to find a place in Dingle. Having had time to reflect on the idea of the Men’s Shed, and what shape it might take and having explored other avenues regarding a site, the group met again some weeks later. By this time all had come to the conclusion that Ballintaggart should be the site and at this meeting there was a sense of urgency that, instead of talking about it, we needed to begin working on it immediately, simply by mucking in, using whatever talents, energies and materials available to the group, in preparing the site. In this way we felt that we could at least set down the necessary foundations for a Men’s Shed. Foundations, yes, in terms of the site and project but, even more importantly, in terms of the necessary atmosphere that would need to be created and the spirit engendered simply by coming together, with no agenda other than the desire to work together on a common project with a common purpose, where each person’s contribution would be equally valued and accepted. This it was felt would help to build up a sense of unity, community and ownership among those involved as well as helping to create a welcoming, friendly and supportive environment 24 West Kerry Live

The new Men's Shed undergoing conversion from a former dairy farm cubicle house at Ballintaggart. that would prove attractive to those who might want to or feel the need to become involved. This would seem to be the pattern and basis on which Men’s Sheds have been set up, all over Ireland and indeed all over the world since 1995; to provide a healthy, relaxing and enjoyable social environment for men of all ages to meet, to share ideas, skills and general interests and time together while at the same time being sensitive towards and being available to serve any pressing need either social or material within the local community that may come to their attention. Work has already begun and the foundations of the Dingle Men’s Shed are being set down, cemented by the good humour and friendly banter of those involved. We would obviously be happy to receive any help, support or indeed encouragement from the community. Hopefully we will soon be able to provide a list of materials that will be needed to help make the Shed into a comfortable meeting and working place. Any materials or equipment that are surplus to requirement and that you would be happy to donate will be much appreciated. If you would like to support or be involved; please contact Pat Brosnan at: 086 8727521 The Famine Graveyard I would like to use the little space left to make an appeal on a separate issue. About four years ago a small group got together in the hope of making the Famine Graveyard, Cnoc a’Chairn, accessible to the public, as well as, of repairing the walls, making the graveyard itself presentable and erecting a little chapel as a shrine to honour the memory of victims of the famine as well as the many infants laid to rest there until well into the last century. We used our own resources and it was our intention to continue to maintain the grounds which we have managed to do so far. This year, we are struggling as the work force has been reduced to two and in fact most of the work has fallen on one person. We have tried to enlist the help of FAS, who would be glad to help but are finding it difficult to enlist new workers. Because we feel so strongly about appropriately honouring those buried there, who are after all our own ancestors, we are determined to see that the grounds are properly kept; and so if there is anybody out there who might feel as we do and can use a strimmer we would be grateful if you would enlist to help in the work. If you would like to help please contact Pat O’Connor, Cnocnahabha at: 087 6497438 or you can contact me at: 086 2625498.

Cosán na Naomh

to St Maolcéadair who died in 616.

Mount Brandon has been a focus of pilgrimage since medieval times, and probably earlier. Cosán na Naomh (The Saints’ Path) is a pilgrim route through the peninsula finishing eventually on the top of the mountain, which is named after St Brendan. An annual pilgrimage is still made to the summit of Mount Brandon on the last Sunday of June.

Slea Head: Ancient Rivers at the Edge of Ireland Patrick Wyse Jackson One of the most picturesque views in Ireland is that of Dunmore Head as seen from Slea Head. Jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, this part of the Dingle Peninsula is made up of sandstones and coarser pebblybearing rocks called conglomerate that are very resistant to erosion. These rocks were produced by the breakdown of even older rocks which produced sediment, which in turn was carried southwards in a series of meandering river channels. If you stop at Slea Head and examine the purple rocks closely, one can make out or feel the sandy texture of the sandstone, and in places can easily see the conglomerate comprising of cobbles of purple mudstones, sandstones and pebbles of white quartz all mixed in a sandy matrix, resembling concrete. All these sediments have been cemented together with iron oxide which gives the stone its distinctive maroon to purple colour. These are the rock-types that were used to build Gallarus Oratory during the 6th or 8th century. By 430 million years ago during what is called the Devonian Period two large continents had collided and Ireland was now a single landmass made up of two geologically distinctive parts. The climate had become warmer and continued pushing up of mountains by forces of this continental collision produced much erosion which was the source of the Slea Head sedimentary rocks and similar rocks on parts of the Blasket Islands. On account of their similarity these sedimentary rocks are packaged by geologists as the Dingle Group and can be recognized to the east as far as the slopes of Caherconree Mountain overlooking Camp.

with the Heritage Council and the author of this article. Patrick Wyse Jackson is a frequent visitor to the Dingle Peninsula and teaches geology at Trinity College, Dublin.

Nineteenth century woodcut of Bull’s Head showing the Dingle Group rocks.

Dingle Pitch & Putt Crazy Golf Soccer Golf

In the 1850s the officers of the Geological Survey of Ireland identified a significant time-gap between two similar package of sediments on the Dingle Peninsula. At Bull’s Head east of Dingle, the Dingle Group rocks have been orientated vertically by major earth-movements, then eroded, and younger Old Red Sandstone deposited on top. The gap, and missing eroded rock, between the two units is represented by a line called an unconformity. The rocks of Slea Head bear testament to major movements in the Earth’s crust, but whose mode of formation we can recognize today by looking in any riverbed where it joins the sea: the meandering river depositing sand along its banks, and its bed is lined with cobbles of various rock-types. Perhaps in millions of years time these present day sediments will be preserved as part of an on-going geological process. The rocks at Slea Head are illustrated in a roadside interpretative panel recently erected by Kerry County Council, in a scheme in association

Ráthanáin – Lios agus Caisleán/Rahinnane Castle and Ringfort Isabel Bennett Tá lios i Ráthanáin agus tógadh caisleán ann cúpla céad bliain tar éis dosna háitritheoirí an lios a thréigint. Ba insna liosanna a mhaireadh na feirmeoirí móra agus a dteaghlaigh. Tugann seandálaithe liosanna nó ráthanna ar na cinn a bhfuil claí cré acu agus cathracha ar na cinn a bhfuil clocha sa chlaí. Uaireanta bhíodh claí adhmaid anuas ar an gcré. Bhíodh tigh laistigh desna clathacha. Clocháin a bhíodh iontu don gcuid is mó i gCorca Dhuibhne. Bhíodh uaimh talúin i gcuid acu mar atá i Ráthanáin. Slándáil nó dídean an fheidhm a bhí acu. Maireann na liosanna ón dtréimhse idir an 7ú agus an 10ú haois A.D. B’fhéidir ag deireadh an ceathrú haois deag nó insan chúigiú haois deag a tógadh an caisleán ann. Is caisleán de chuid na nGearaltach é, chomh maith leis na cinn i nGallaras agus i Min Aird. Bhí Ridire Chiarraí ina chónaí ann. De ghnáth is túr cearnógach a bhíonn insna caisleáin seo, bíonn idir trí go dtína cúig hurlár iontu, fuinneoga caola agus forbhallaí arda le cíor lámhaigh. Tógadh iad mar áitreabh daingne ag na huaisle, idir Normánaigh agus Éireannaigh. Tá Caisleán Ráthanáin ina fhothrach ó aimsir Chromail. A well-known site for anyone travelling west from Dingle along the Slea Head Drive is Ráthanáin castle and ringfort, situated on Mám na Gaoithe, near Ceann Trá. This national monument stands out as a multi-period site, re-used in the medieval period when a towerhouse was built within the earlier ringfort, which was probably also re-fortified at the time, although originally being constructed in the early medieval period. Ringforts are one of the most common monuments that we have. Well-to-do farmers and their families lived within these enclosures, in houses usually made of stone here in Corca Dhuibhne (clocháin), although other building materials might also have been used. This site at Ráthanáin also has a souterrain (or underground passage) entered from the fosse or ditch area. These features may have been used for storage and also possibly for refuge. Ringforts have a general date range of from the 7th to the 10th centuries AD. Later on, probably in the 14th or 15th century, the branch of the Fitzgerald family known as the Knights of Kerry built a tower-house castle within this monument, re-using the surrounding banks as a defensive feature, and maximising on the strategic location on Mám na Gaoithe, commanding the pass but also with a good view of Ventry Harbour. Castles generally tend to be located in strategic areas, with a very good view all around from the battlemented area on the roof, adding to their defensive nature.

they would also have had others in the area, including in Dingle town, which may have been their home from the later 17th century. In later years, in the 18th century, the family moved into Grove House in Dingle, the site of which is where the Pobalscoil is now built. Tower-houses generally have 3-5 storeys, with either a spiral stairs or lengths of straight stairs within the walls giving access to the upper floors. The entrance doorway is usually defended and they have narrow windows and crenellated battlements. Normally at least one of the floors consisted of a stone vault (as can be seen at Ráthanáin), while the others were of timber and there was usually only one main room on each floor, with one or more much smaller chambers around the sides. Higher floors would have contained more private rooms, bedrooms and living rooms, while the ground floor was generally used for storage. There are 3 stories in Ráthanáin, with a mural stair. Tower-houses were the fortified residences of the better-off members of the Anglo-Irish and Irish gentry alike. Those surviving in West Kerry did not generally continue in use as dwelling places from the mid-17th century onwards (and sometimes earlier), for a variety of reasons, not least the Confederate wars of that time and the change in land ownership that resulted. This was the case with Ráthanáin. Please note that this monument is on private property, and permission must be obtained from the landowner before visiting the site. Further information about ringforts and tower-houses, and a lot more besides, can be found in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle) www.westkerrymuseum.com. The museum is open from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm each day for the summer season; Tel: 066 9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum.com. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee while you browse in our bookshop, and there is free Wi-Fi for customers. Buail isteach ag Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil maidir le stair agus seandálaíocht na háite. Tá siopa leabhar, caife beag agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá óna 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat isteach.

The family here seem to have been in the area from the early 14th century, and were one of the major landholders at that time. Minard and Gallarus were also FitzGerald castles, and West Kerry Live 35

Richie Williams Tidy Towns. Work Evenings continue on Mondays, meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. We again appeal to all business owners to take a few minutes each day to clean up all forms of litter including cigarette buts from outside their own premises. We also appeal to Residents Associations in the various estates to continue their good work in maintaining their areas as it appears their efforts have slackened off over the past while. The Annual Church Gate Collection will be held before all Masses on August 14th and 15th and the usual generosity of the general public will be much appreciated. Races. Céad Míle Fáilte to all our visitors and particularly to those returning for the Dingle Races which is one of the highlights of not alone this Peninsula but of the Horse and Pony Racing Calendar in the entire country. We encourage everybody to support this wonderful occasion at least once during the 3 day programme and well done to the hard working volunteers for their hard work and commitment to ensuring the continued success of the weekend. Peil. The quest for Sam Maguire continues and great to see the Geaney cousins playing such a pivotal role once again on the slippy sod of Croke Park against Galway. Good luck also to the West Kerry representatives on the Kerry Junior and Minor teams in their respective games in Portlaoise this weekend. Activity on the local club front continues at all levels and the various teams request support for their games which appear to be going on almost every evening of the week over the past few months. 24 Marathons. It appears that Shane Finn’s recent 24 marathons in 24 days has helped raise over €120,000 for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland and the amount is still rising daily . Once again well done to Shane and his team and the collection is still open if any of our readers wish to contribute to such a worthy cause. Exhibition. Dingle Library hosts the TOMÁS ÁGHAS exhibition of memorabelia from 100 years ago and is well worth a visit to view this wonderful display of items from our local and national history. Parking. The Business Chamber continue to appeal to all employees to help the parking situation by leaving their vehicles in the perimeter of town and leave the centre of town free for shoppers and visitors who usually only occupy parking spaces for short periods. Research has shown that each parking space has the capability of being used at least 20 times during each normal working day so please lets all help the situation and ensure our future employment in the town centre. High Vis Clothing. Recent near misses and carelessness on the roads by motorists, cyclists, runners and walkers prompt me to again highlight the need for more people to wear high vis vests or clothing which can be easily seen at all times of the day and night. Yes we can all contribute to road safety so drivers please slow down and wear high vis if you are heading out on the road by foot or on a bicycle.

Japa meditation, or japa yoga, is an ancient practice to calm the mind and soothe the soul. What we experience inside, we manifest outside. Japa is a sound based meditation which increases our ability to focus our minds, to increase our productivity and above all our energy levels. The world runs on energy, with it we can do anything, without it we struggle. This will be a taster class prior to a twelve week course, which will enable the attendees to experience this meditation before the course starts. The evening will include: *Understanding the benefits of meditation. *The advantages of mantras for meditation. *Pranayama breathing exercises. *Mantra session.

Community Enterprise Events Welcome

Seniors. Our senior team hosted Castlegregory last Friday evening for what was billed as a crucial Division 4 promotion tie. Apart from the first ten minutes when the sides exchanged points, the game was totally dominated by the home team. Points from David McAssey, Aaron Murphy, Gary Sayers and Terry O’ Sullivan for Keel saw them build a lead of 0-9 to 0-3 after 25 minutes, Castlegregory’s scores coming from Anto Kelliher (free), Michael Scanlon and Liam Maunsell. A goal by Aaron Murphy immediately before the interval extended keels lead to 1-9 to 0-3 at half-time. To add to their woes, Castlegregory lost Alan Fitzgerald to injury before half time and Micheál Ó Sé shortly after half time. Despite an improved showing in the second half, the visitors were confined to pointed frees from Anto Kelliher (4) and Timmy Moriarty while in some lovely fast flowing football five of Keel’s eight points in the same period came from play. In the end, Keel ran out comfortable winners on a score of 1-17 to 0-8. On the night where every player gave a good account of themselves Martin Burke, Gavin Evans, Donal O’Neill and Aaron Murphy stood out. Their next game is at home to Skellig Rangers on Aug 13th U12’s. Our U12 teams begin there central league next Monday evening away to Laune Rangers

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Happy Retirement Caroline McCrohan , Principal of Aughacasla National School has retired. Caroline’s commitment and interest in education and in the welfare of all of the children of the school during her tenure of over 27 years leaves a huge legacy to Aughacasla school, which has a long history of excellence in education provision. Caroline, May you enjoy a long and happy retirement. Go raibh míle maith agat ! Birthday Celebrations Johanna Kelliher, Seaview House, Garrahies, Camp celebrated a special birthday on Wednesday night with family and friends at The Seven Hogs. A great night was had by all. Best wishes Johanna, may you celebrate many many more brthdays ! Obituary The death of John, Sean Herlihy, Knockglossmore occurred on Thursday last. Delivering a graveside oration on Saturday, Sean’s dear friend and football colleague Eoghan O’Dhuibhne paid an emotional tribute to Sean, a good footballer with the Camp team in 1949, 50, 51 highly committed both on and off the field. Eugie talked of Sean’s love of the land and farming and of his lovely singing voice. Gordon Saunders sang The Rose of Tralee and Milo O’Brien played a few of his favourite tunes at Mass and the beautiful Camp choir under the direction of John Chamber sang some lovely hymns, all a fitting tribute to a man who loved music and loved to sing all of his life. Sean was a civic minded man too and he represented the Farming sector on the first branch of Camp Muintir na Tíre in 1958 and he had an avid interest in news and current affairs keeping him abreast of happenings all over the world. Séan was a pleasure to meet and to know, a born gentleman ! May the sod of Ballinknockane lie lightly on his gentle soul.

The following reading at her funeral mass, as gaeilge says it all – “Gúimíd ar son oibrithe deonacha a bhíonn ag saothrú le croí maith mór mar a dhein Bridie ar feadh na mblianta i bhforbairt phobail an Chama ! Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.” Bridie is survived by her daughters, Máire, Bríd and Íde, sons, Pádraig and Séan, grandchildren and great grandchildren, daughter in law, sons in law and extended family, many relatives and friends. Sympathy is extended to all. Camp Fair Monday 18th September is Camp Fair Day ! And this year promises to be bigger and even better than last year which was a great success and a wonderful day out for all the family. Along with our Annual Sheep Show in Daly’s Yard and the afternoon Children and Adults Fancy Dress and Dog Show an openair session of music and song will also be held in the village. Mutton pies and music in the pubs and teas and coffees in the Old School and meeting up with old friends is all part of the fun of the fair, so mark Camp Fair Day in your Diary, not to be missed for sure ! Crossbay 2017 Congratulations to Sandra Byrne, Camp first woman ashore in the CrossBay 2017, Tralee Bay Swimming Challenge from Derrymore to Fenit 4.5km Swim on Saturday last. Well done Sandra and all who braved the elements of Tralee Bay, a wonderful achievement for all 17 participants.

Camp Community, footballers of today and of yesteryear and friends and colleagues formed a guard of honour on both days and Fr. Gerry Keane celebrated the Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at St. Marys Church Camp. Sean is survived by his wife Maeve, sons, PJ, Tom and Denis and daughter Marcella, grand children and great grandchild, brother Paud, sisters, Mary and Kitty, daughters in law and son in law, nieces, nephews and extended family, relatives and friends. Sean’s son Jack predeceased him. Sympathy is extended to all of the family. Rest In Peace. Bridie Moran, Bridgid Úi Mhoráin, Ballinknockane, Camp passed peacefully to her eternal reward on Saturday last at Ocean View Nursing Home, Camp surrounded by all of her family. Bridie was a committed voluntary community worker giving over 50 years service to Camp Community. And this was at a time when there was little or no outside financial support for rural communities and local fundraising was the only means of income for facilities. Bridie was a true advocate of self help epitomising the words of Canon Hayes founder of Muintir na Tire “better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”. And in 1958 she was one of the founders of Camp Muintir na Tire and later the ICA who in her time provided home cooking and refreshments for all fundraising activities including the Monday night Whist Drive where she and her colleague Maureen (R.I.P) provided refreshments for well over 20 years. In addition to all of that, Bridie gave the ultimate commitment to the community, when Camp Community Council purchased a Community Sportsfield in 1983 and she took up the responsibilty of a trustee. A creative and artistic person too, she recited poetry at every social event and took an active role in Camp Drama Society, in the early days when rehearsals were held in her home in Camp Barrack. And Bridie’s loyalty to her native Cork was marked at her funeral Mass too when our local Déise/Waterford woman Norah brought the red and white flag to the altar and “The Banks” was sang with great gusto at the graveside later, followed by a lovely session of traditional music delivered by her grandchildren. Bridie was laid to rest in Ballinknockane Cemetary, Camp following requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Gerry Keane PP. assisted by Fr. Jim Sheehy and Rev. Phyllis Jones. A Camp Community guard of honour representative of all sectors of the Community accompanied Bridie’s funeral cortege to her final resting place next to her beloved husband Séan who predeceased her in 2009. 44 West Kerry Live

Orthotics - A Few Things To Look Out For Eddie O’Grady Here are a few things to look out for when getting orthotics. You don’t necessarily need orthotics if you have flat feet or high arches. I know people who run marathons with both conditions, don’t wear orthotics and have no injuries. People often get lower leg injuries when they start out running and are quickly referred for orthotics. What was really needed was time for the body to adapt to running and a proper graded training program. Kids rarely need orthotics. Many kids have flat feet because their musculature etc. hasn’t developed yet. What did kids do for the past 1000s of years before orthotics and even adults for that matter. Sometimes the issue with kids is poor footwear, or the fact they are going around without tying their laces up properly, or because they are growing(growing pains). We all want to do the best for our kids and some people prey on that. Often quality cheaper off the shelf orthotics will suffice for many conditions. However if you choose prescribed orthotics, proper prescription should be done somewhere along the following lines. The injury will be assessed and diagnosed. This is important because the orthotic being made is condition specific. Also you will be asked about your activities and say

the surface you play on, because the material used in the orthotic will be dependent on these factors. A detailed analysis of your foot will be carried out to check range of movement of the joints of the foot, flexibility of the ankle, arches etc, position and flexibility of toes etc. This is because whether the foot is rigid or not, or whether there is some dysfunction in the foot will dictate the shape of the orthotic device. Areas of pain on the feet will also be noted. Your gait will also be looked at(say do your feet turn in or out etc.)

pair) and even then orthotics is not an exact science. The orthotics also should look professionally finished and feel comfortable to wear.

Eddie O’Grady

As you can see the above is quiet detailed. A cast of your foot should also be taken, usually either as a ‘’plaster of paris’’ or a ‘’foam’’ cast. I have seen plenty crap orthotics out there over the years and people paying up to 500 euro for them, thinking they have something extra special because they have paid so much. I have even seen where somebody drew a line around a persons foot on a piece of paper and made ‘’orthotics’’ based on that alone. Above are some guidelines anyway. Again bear in mind you might not even need orthotics, especially say if you have been training and playing a specific sport for years relatively injury free. You might just have an injury that needs treatment. Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) You need to be assessed by a qualified person when paying out the kind of money prescribed orthotics cost(roughly 300 euro for a decent

Prop. Gavin O’Grady

Question I am the parent of a four-year-old daughter who will start Primary School in September. My only income is from my One-Parent Family Payment and €90 I get each week from a part-time job. I don’t get maintenance and I’m worried about the extra costs involved in sending my daughter to school. Is there State help available? Answer As you are getting a social welfare payment, you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) to help meet the cost of your daughter’s school uniform and footwear, as long as your weekly income is below a certain level. You are currently receiving a One-Parent Family Payment of €222.80 (including a child payment) and earning €90, so your weekly income is €312.80, which is below the income limit of €418.10 for a lone parent with one child and will entitle you to BSCFA. The BSCFA payment this year is €125 for a qualified child aged 4–11 years. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically in many cases. If you haven’t already received a letter from them, you will need to apply by 30 September 2017. Application forms are available on the Department’s website, welfare.ie, or from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. A form can also be requested by SMS (text message) by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing the Department at BSCFA@welfare.ie. The Department of Education and Skills also runs a School Books Grant Scheme which is available to State-funded schools to help with the cost of school books. Some schools will help with the cost of buying textbooks or run a Textbook Rental Scheme. You should contact your daughter’s school principal to find out if this option is available at her new school. You can get detailed information on the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance on citizensinformation.ie. West Kerry Live 49

Cromane Notes Jane Casey Cromane GAA - Well done, once again, to Donnchadh Walsh for playing his part in Kerry’s 1-18 to 0-13 win over Galway in Sunday’s All-Ireland quarter-final. Kerry’s All-Ireland semi-final will be played on Sunday, August 20, against the winners of Monday’s Mayo/ Roscommon replay. Under-16’s: Lee Strand Under-16 County Football League Division 3A (result): Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane - 6-18, Glenflesk 2-4 Two wins in a row in the county league for the GGC under-16s. Our lads were too strong for a Glenflesk side that lined out without some key players. The game in Glenbeigh saw our lads produce a fine kicking performance as they hit 6-16 from play. Well done lads. Team and scorers: Cian Knight; Dylan Falvey, Jack O’Sullivan, Diarmuid McGillycuddy; Seán Tadhg Sheahan 0-1, Kieran O’Sullivan 1-0, Darragh Blennerhasset; Liam Roche 0-1, Tommy Quirke; Chris Scannell 1-1, Darren O’Shea 1-5, Seán Page 0-2; Kaiya O’Flaherty 0-1, Darragh McKeefry 2-1, Rian O’Donovan 1-6 (0-2 frees). Cromane Maroon lost out by four points, 5-14 to 5-19, away to Glenbeigh while Cromane White were beaten in Killorglin by a good Laune Rangers Blue side, 5-10 to 1-10. Next up are two games away to Beaufort on Friday evening, August 4 (7pm throw-in for both games). Games against Keel, called off due to inclement weather conditions last week, also need to be refixed. B Team: Cromane ‘B’ lost to Glenbeigh/Glencar last week in their third Mid Kerry B League game. The game was played in slippery conditions in Cromane and it was nip and tuck in the first half. Our visitors led at the break by 0-5 to 0-4. Glenbeigh/Glencar pulled away in the second half as their superior fitness told to win by 1-13 to 0-4. Our B team play their fifth Mid Kerry League game on Tuesday, August 8, when they are at home to Laune Rangers at 7pm. It is always good to see new faces in action. Mid Kerry U21s: Darren Houlihan and Paudie McMahon were part of the Mid Kerry U21 side that played Kenmare District in the county final last Wednesday evening in Austin Stack Park. Rud nach mór a lua ná gur diail an bheartaíocht atá déanta ag foireann na Gaeltachta i mbliana, idir óg agus sinsir. Mo ghraidhn a gcrói.

Freagraí

Aimsir Ná raibh an Bhealtaine go diail againn ach is baolach go raibh Iúil go hainnis- lár an tsamhraidh, gaoth, ceó agus báisteach. Ba dhóigh leat gur é an Márta a bhí agat uaireanta. Ná caill an misneach mar bhí an-fhásann. Ní bheidh aon cheal féir ar an bhfeirmeoir. Brexit Ní dúramair faic go dtí seo fé Bhrexit agus an mí–ádh a leanfaidh é más fíor.Tá an ceart ag an dTaoiseach an fhadhb atá cruthaithe ag na Sasanaigh is fútha an fhadhb a réiteach. Ní chuala riamh oiread cainte fé aon abhar agus gan é tosnaithe i gceart fós. Deirtear gur é seo an t-am le Éire aontaithe a bheith againn. Tá mórán don dtuairim go mbeidh saghas éigin dá leithéid againn ach ní bheidh an DUP sa Tuaisceart sásta aon bhaint mar sin a bheith acu leis an bPoblacht. Ná bímis ag magadh fúinn féin. Gan dabht is mó cos a chuireann an chinniúint fuithi, mar sin fanfam agus cífeam. Truailliú. An mó duine orainn a thabharfaid fén ngluaistean nua Leictreach?. D’réir deallraimh ní bheidh aon slad á dhéanamh ar ár mbóithre mar, má bhíonn gluaisteáin tiomáinte ag leictreachas a bheidh ábalta an bóthar a thabhairt ortha féin gan aon duine á dtiomáint. Ambaice, ach go bhfuil sé á thuar go mór go dtiocfaid an lá níos luaithe ná mara mheasamaíd. Beidh na comhlachtaí íle go mór ina choinne seo agus is mór é a neart- airgead. Ach mura mbeidh ar chumas na Náisiúin Aontaithe aontas Domhanda a fháil leanfaidh scóladh agus scrios domhanda. Bheidh na Náisiúin Aontaithe ag iarraidh tabhairt ar gach tír a gcion a dhéanamh; béidh scrios mura ndeintear. Níl ach ardú do 2 chéim eile teochta agus má tharlaíonn, beidh cúrsaí ina gcíor thuathail. Beidh an Chine Daonna mar tá, thíos go deó leis, le gálaí agus fíor dhroch aimsir agus bailte ísle ar fuaid an domhain báite gan aon dul siar. Is dócha go dtiocfaidh a gciall dos na dalacáin is mó amuigh, fiú Trump. Aitheantas Ná fuil sé in am go mbeadh leacht againn i gcuimhne daoine mar Danny Mac ‘n tSítiigh, Jer Ó Cíobhain, Seán Ó Lúing agus an ‘Spailpín ó Muircheartaigh. Bíos ag cuimhneamh ar mar go measann scata gur cheart ómós a thabhairt dos na Laochra seo rúd go n-aontaím leis. Mar sin má tá suim agat sa bheartas seo, agus déarfainn go bhfuil, beithfear ag iarraidh na pinginí a chnósach lena léithéid a chur i gcrích.

Bhí Gaillimh go maith ach ní rabhadar maith a ndóthain. Beidh daoine ag tromaíocht ar Chiarraí ach aon fhoireann a thugann an lá leo agus ocht bpointe breise acu, is léir go rabhadar i bhfad níos fearr. Chuaidh Gaillimh an- ghairid dhá bháide a aimsiú ach bhí an dála céanna fíor i gcás Chiarrai. Bhí ‘Star’ go diail ar fad agus dá bhfanfadh sé istigh in aice an bháide dhéanfadh sé breis gadaíochta ar na Gaillimheánaigh. Bhí Colm Geaney go diail arís agus Johnny Buckley. Cuirfead mar seo é bhí gach foireann acu go maith agus iad siúd a tháinig isteach ón dtaobh líne, bhíodar san go diail chomh maith.
