Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 23rd January will be Wonder. Starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson

the film tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. The following week on Tuesday 30th January the feature will be The Florida Project. The film tells the story of a precocious six year-old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times. Starring William Defoe, The Florida Project offers a colorfully empathetic look at an underrepresented part of the population that proves absorbing even as it raises sobering questions about modern America.

Inch Whiskey Tasting

The Dingle chapter of the Irish Whiskey Society will be having their first tasting evening of 2018 on 2nd Feb in Foleys bar, Inch at 8pm. The evening’s tastings have been carefully selected to pair with a fabulous assortment of chocolates, which include a locally made Whiskey Truffle from Milseoige in Dingle. Caroline O’Connor at Milseoige will not divulge the recipe, only to say that the Truffle has a mix of whiskeys including our local Dingle whiskey. Other chocolates on the night have been donated by Manna Organic Store in Tralee. They stock a large range of organic chocolates and the owner Claire O’ Connor has also spent time with three members of the Society sipping many whiskeys and nibbling a large quantity of chocolate in an effort to pair both. A free bus will travel from Dingle leaving from the bus stop at the back of Garvey’s SuperValu at 7pm sharp with the return journey departing at 11pm. It will be a sixteen seater bus, so book early to ensure a seat is available. Tickets are limited and must be bought online and will NOT be available on the night at the door. Book a place to avoid disappointment! dinglewhiskeysociety@gmail.com https://www. irishwhiskeysociety.com/event- 2776000

Farming News Louis Murchan Dingle Knowledge Transfer Event NEWKD are holding an Information Evening jointly with Kerry in Benners Hotel, Dingle on Tuesday 23rd January at 7.45 pm. This is an important event and needs to be supported locally. The KT Scheme has not been without its issues and this meeting intends to address many of these, and hopefully help explain and resolve issues. The focus of the event is to give information about supporting upland farmers, and their management of upland vegetation. The scheme acknowledges that farmers play a crucial role in keeping upland habitats in good environmental condition. Whilst many of the agricultural schemes have aimed to address environmental problems, one weakness has been that they operate on a “one size fits all” approach. The locally led scheme encourages locally driven solutions to address environmental and bio-diversity challenges at a local level… so local solutions to local problems. Well informed guest speakers representing the Dept of Agriculture, Irish Heritage Council, National Hill Committee, and the IFA will give information about the application process for the scheme/its benefits, and also key information about an existing project within the scheme. This should be an interesting conference for all concerned. This event has Knowledge Transfer status, and sign- in for Knowledge Transfer group participants is 7.45 pm -8.45 pm. More information from NEWKD offices, Dingle 066 7142788 Pruning Hedges - Motorways For Wildlife - GLAS Pruning new hedgerows encourages new shoots to grow at ground level, which will eventually grow into a dense stock-proof hedgerow. About 1,000 GLAS 1 participants have opted to plant new hedgerows. With a minimum length of 10m, new hedgerows of blackthorn and/or whitethorn and holly are planted at a rate of six plants per metre in a double row. Hedgerows are beneficial to the environment; they provide wind and sun shelter for animals and crops, aid drainage and help to prevent soil erosion. Hedgerows are nature’s motorways. They’re a means by which wildlife in all its biodiversity move throughout the land. Small mammals (of particular importance to bats), insects, butterflies, plants and birds use hedgerows to travel from one region to another. When hedgerows are removed, wildlife loses valuable corridors for shelter, commuting, foraging and nesting, and becomes isolated and more vulnerable. Badgers To Be Vaccinated - TB Eradication Programme Badgers are set be vaccinated as part of the bovine tuberculosis (TB) eradication programme, Minister Michael Creed has announced. The most recent research findings confirm that vaccination of badgers can play a role in reducing the level of infection in cattle. While vaccination of badgers is not a ‘silver bullet’, it is important in that it addresses one of the critical elements within the complex TB eradication challenge. The vaccination of badgers will be carried out by staff from the Department of Agriculture. The programme will commence in the areas which have already been part of the field trials demonstrating the effectiveness of badger vaccination. It will roll out incrementally to other parts of the country over time, with vaccination gradually replacing the need to remove badgers, the department explained. Minister Creed concluded by welcoming the fact that vaccination of badgers enables Ireland move forward towards the eradication of bovine TB in a controlled holistic way – which will serve to protect the badger population, whilst also protecting cattle and the livelihoods of farmers. CARA Projects 2017 As a regular contribution to this column, I never use the first person singular. But on this occasion, I make an exception. At this stage, many of you will have noticed a number of young people actively fundraising for a charity called Cara Projects. This is to enable one of our young people to volunteer in an orphanage in CARA Projects Girl’s Rescue Centre (CGRC), located in Kibiko, Ngong, Nairobi, Kenya. This is not just an ordinary orphanage and rescue centre, as the plight of young girls in equatorial Africa is much tougher than it is here, in Ireland, even in remote parts of Europe. Some girls out there are abandoned, sold, or stolen and placed in the slavery market. The lives of thousands of young girls are ripped apart through illness, poverty, abuse and hardship. It’s not a pleasant world. CARA Projects have been working out in the region for years and is the brainchild of a man from Newbridge, Co Kildare called Paddy O’Connor. 12 West Kerry Live

Over the past number of years, Paddy has worked on a number of projects in Kenya, ranging from the building of orphanages and schools to the provision of a mini-bus for a remote orphanage outside Nairobi. It is an Irish Registered Charity (CHY18652) and is totally funded and supported by volunteers. No income is paid to the Irish Board of Management. All board members have travelled and worked on projects in CGRC, as it is a Registered Kenyan NGO. These Projects have no political or religious affiliations. Every year, for the past number of years, a bunch of local teens travelled to this centre, to help out. To get there, they first had to fundraise, to meet their travel costs, and bring some much-needed cash to the centre. This year is no exception, and there are some 70 transition year and fifth year school students travelling to Kenya this year. This makes fund-raising even harder. Of these young people, a number are travelling from both Dingle and Castlegregory Secondary Schools, including my two sons, (Louis & Sean, hence the passionate interest). It’s hard not to be proud of someone who takes on a task like this, especially when they do this on their own, or when required, press-gang their friends into helping out. But they all did get out there and had lots and lots of help from friends and family. But they still need some help. Wishes are important but they don’t put food in bellies or books in schoolbags or teachers in class-rooms. Your money does. Can you imagine if you sent your child to school then realised that there was no money to pay a teacher. Then you would realise how important a teacher is. Education is the most important thing in helping the children of Kenya to get out of the poverty that they live in. It costs just €140 to educate a child in Kenya, for a year, so when someone brings out €2,100 this will guarantee the education of 15 girls, for that year. They also have to be fed, clothed, housed and protected. In total, this costs €90,000 per per year for 30 girls. Not a lot, in real terms but to do this, the centre get 65 plus volunteers to fundraise, and look for a minimum of €1,000 each. Any extra cash raised is a bonus. This still leave the centre short financially, and this money is raised through commercial agriculture, crafts, and fish farming. They have pigs, grow wheat and other cereals more common to the Rift Valley, than to West Kerry. There are 28 fish ponds, producing fish to supply the local markets. All this goes towards making that extra money for the upkeep of the centre. This is going to be a life changing experience for these young people, but it’s not about them and they know that. And it’s not going to be near as significant as it will be for those who benefit from your generous contributions. I wish I could go, (there’s that “I” again) and I know that I could do some good, but I just can’t. But someone is going. So, if you see anyone collecting over the next few weekend, for a charity with a strange name, for a centre in a far-off place, don’t say, “but, didn’t I give you a few pence last week” Just say hello, and put your hand in your pocket. It’s not for them, it’s not for me, it’s not for you. It’s for those poor young people who need it most. And, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to contribute again next year, because that’s the type of young people we have down here. There are also some, who feel that we do enough, and that’s what makes this achievement all the greater. Let me just remind you, we don’t do enough. During our darkest days of our worst recession, it was still safe to let our children walk home from school. The volunteers travels on Thursday 1st February flying from Dublin to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, then on to Nairobi Kenya, and by car/coach to their final destination. Not a bad, or a small undertaking for young people still not entitled to vote or get married, and who can still play minor football or hurling for their club, (that’s if they knew how to play)! Finally, here’s the important bit. Anyone who wishes to make a contribution can go the Garvey’s Supervalu and donate at the final bag packing on the last Saturday in January, before they depart. Or, if you would just prefer to make a direct contribution, small sums can be lodged to his BoI Account details as follows: A/C number - 94803436; Sort Code – 905707; IBAN – IE30BOFI90570794803436; BIC – BOFIIE2D - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Seville Orange Tart and Seville Orange Marmalade Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Unfortunately, we have become so accustomed to getting whatever fruit and vegetables we want whenever we want without ever having to think of seasonality. Seville oranges are one of the few examples that you generally won’t find out of season. So why not treat yourself to this delicious bitter fruit and remember you don’t have much time as the season only lasts 2-3 weeks. They are way more bitter than other oranges but they are fabulous to cook with for marmalade, cakes, tarts or even sauces. I have included a recipe for an orange tart and marmalade. Each year I know some people make their own marmalade, but for those who don’t and would love to you will see that the recipe is easy and you will have some marmalade to keep you going through the year.

Seville Orange Tart Ingredients For the pastry 400g flour 200g butter 100g caster sugar 1 egg For the filling 4 eggs and 1 yolk 140g caster sugar 140ml cream 5 Seville oranges, zested and juiced Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC. For the pastry Mix the flour and butter together until it comes together like a sandy texture. Mix the egg and sugar to help dissolve. Add this to the flour and butter and mix until it comes together. Wrap in cling film and allow this to rest for about 20 minutes. Roll out the pastry very thinly on a floured work surface until just a little bigger than the size of a 23cm, loose-bottomed tart. Line the tart tin, letting the extra pastry hang over the sides of the tin.

Seville Orange Marmalade Ingredients (Will make about 8 or 9 1lb jars) 2kg Seville oranges (about 18) 4 lemons 2kg light muscovado sugar 2kg white sugar Method Wash the oranges and lemons and put them in a large pot and add about 9 litres of water. If you do not have a large pot, divide the recipe by two and make the other batch the following week. Place a plate on top of the fruit to keep them submerged. Simmer this for about 3 hours to allow the fruit to soften. Following this, allow the pot and fruit to cool enough to remove the fruit, you can leave overnight if you want, but make sure to keep the liquid. For the next step remove the whole fruit and cut them in half and scoop out the flesh and put into the liquid which was used to cook the fruit. Slice the orange peel finely and put with the pips into muslin or a clean pillow case. At this stage put everything into a pot including the muslin cloth tied at the top and bring to the boil. Allow this to simmer until it has reduced to about one third. Next, warm the sugar in a bowl in the oven for about five minutes (this will help to speed up the process of setting the marmalade). You can add the sugar stirring continuously - you can add the sugar in two or three stages allowing it to dissolve totally before adding the next. Once the sugar has totally dissolved bring the pot to a fast boil. Keep it boiling until it reaches setting point. An easy way to determine this is to have a couple of cold saucers in the fridge and simply pour a little on a saucer and place into the fridge and leave for a few minutes. Check this after a few minutes by checking for a skin when you push the marmalade – this will determine if it is ready or if you want the marmalade thicker just leave to boil longer. Once ready, pour the marmalade into hot sterilised jars (simply put the jars and lids in an oven at 180º for about 10 minutes, remember to do this with all utensils used such as the ladle jug etc.) Fill them almost to the top, put the lid on tightly and turn upside down and allow to cool. Enjoy!!

To bake the pastry blind Line the tin with greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans. Blind bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven until pale golden-brown. Remove from the oven and remove the baking beans and paper. Carefully trim the excess pastry off around the sides using a sharp knife. Return the empty pastry shell to the oven for another 10-12 minutes or until it is completely dry. Once the pastry is ready remove it from the oven and leave it in the tart tin. Allow this to cool. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 160ºC. For the filling

Opening Hours Mon - Fri: 11am - 5pm Sat: 10am - 6pm

Whisk the eggs, egg yolk and sugar in a bowl until it comes to a smooth consistency. Pour in the cream and mix well. Add in the orange juice and zest. Pour this into the pastry shell and carefully place this in the oven. Carefully transfer to the oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes or until just set but with a slight wobble in the middle. Place this on a wire rack and allow it to cool. The mixture will sink slightly. West Kerry Live 17

ons and top up with about 1000mg of supplement vitamin C for a good impact.

We can’t say we weren’t warned about this year’s Flu season and there probably has never been so much hullabaloo about it between A & E chaos, trolleys for beds and the confusion about the flu vaccine. Altogether it makes for scary times and particularly worrying for the most vulnerable people in our community – the young, old, pregnant and already sick, that covers a lot of people! Staying true to my usual stance on health matters, much relief and protection from colds and flu can be found in the kitchen. Whether you are a patient or a carer, the following foods will have you Kong Flu Fighting in no time!

Vegans look away now! Beef and Chicken bones simmered over hours produce a medicinal tonic with multiple benefits against cold and flu. The warm broth not only soothes your throat but helps keep you hydrated too. The warm temperature of broth eases congestion and clears mucous from the airways and makes the environment less hospitable to visiting germs. Cysteine, precursor to N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), is used in medicine as a mucolytic in the treatment of bronchitis, COPD and lung disorders and is indicated for the relief of cough, wheeze and phlegm associated with colds and flu. Cysteine is released into the cooking broth from chicken bones, another good reason to add broth into your cold and flu pot along with the onions and garlic. Beef is rich in zinc, important for the development of white blood cells which work well with vitamin C defending your body from viral attacks. The protein from both beef and chicken meat Solar Systems supports the body in building antibodies and Tom Kennedy fighting off infection.

We must begin with onions as our number one for colds and flu viruses. Unbelievable healing and instant protection puts onions top of this heap! In ancient times, Ayurvedic and Chinese health practitioners revered onions for their ability to relieve congestion in sinuses, bronchial tubes and lungs. The Ancient Greeks rubbed onions on aching muscles and Native Americans added them liberally to Autumn and Winter dishes as a preventative to colds and flu. Even the World Health Organisation in their own publication on medicinal plants, cited that Bulbus Allii Cepaei (onions to us) possess the “ability to help relieve flu symptoms including coughs, congestion, respiratory infections and bronchitis”. Much of the anti-viral action comes from several sulfur compounds responsible for the pungent flavour that makes you cry. Onion-related snivelling is good as it helps thin and clear mucous and wash microbes out of our respiratory airways. Quercetin found in onions is noted for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant power, boosting our immune function even further. Less than a hundred years ago European doctors advocated placing cut onions in a patient’s room to absorb airborne microbes such as bacteria and viruses, some others put them in socks and poultices. For now, though, try putting them into soups and broths for both prevention and relief. Garlic comes in as a close second, good enough to keep vampires away it’s pretty good at warding off colds and flu too. Allicin is the active ingredient and is much more potent in fresh garlic than dried supplements. Allicin is a powerful antimicrobial and becomes more potent once you cut or crush fresh garlic, leaving it to rest for a few minutes before consuming or adding to cooking. Don’t be shy with garlic and add by the handful to the onion soups and broths for extra oomph! Oranges and Lemons say the Bells of St. Clements and so say all of us! Vitamin C is crucial to the immune system and mucous barriers but can be a bit scarce during the Winter. The thick skin on citrus fruits ensures that vitamin C remains mainly intact from harvest time through Winter and Spring making it an ideal adjunct to cold season recipes. One orange can provide about 60mg of vitamin C, more than enough to keep scurvy away but you could do with a bit more during the cold and flu season. Milltown Castlemaine GAA New Baby: Congratulations to one of our former players Lawrence Dowd and his wife Angela on the arrival of their baby daughter. We wish you all many happy times together. Referees Required: Would you be interested in becoming a referee at under 12 and under 14 level? Or perhaps your interest may lie with refereeing at senior level. Kerry GAA are looking for our club to put forward some potential referees. A training course covering all aspects of refereeing will take place in early 2018. If you are interested, please contact any member of the executive or send a message via the FB page. There is presently a huge shortage of personnel and without sufficient referees, our games may not be able to proceed. Children’s/ Choir: For the past 9 years, we have been privileged to have a children’s choir in our community. The children sing twice monthly at the Sunday morning masses. The choir has gone from strength to strength over the years. Unfortunately, one of our leaders Ben is relocating. If you are a person that plays an instrument (ideally guitar or keyboard) and would like to work with a children’s choir, please contact Deirdre O’ Sullivan on 086/1703332.

Comórtas Chairman Pádraig Óg. Ó Sé said, ‘We are thrilled to be breaking new ground by hosting a team from South Korea and it’s great to see Team Germany ladies and men’s teams, made up of six German GAA Clubs, making the big effort to travel. It reflects the expanding reach of the GAA community globally but also shows the interest in our tournament has spread far beyond what my father ever imagined. Supermarket chain Lidl are our main partner and, just as they have helped to grow Ladies Football, they have helped us to grow the tournament to 40 teams this year which we are really excited about. The support of local host clubs is crucial in ensuring we can maintain such a high number of teams and we thank them for their co-operation. Local partners Lee Strand Milk and Kerry County Council Tourism Unit are backing us also to continue with the Comórtas, which has become a big benefit in terms of local tourism”.

Dingle Hub. The Hub, based in Cooleen, offers a great opportunity to anybody needing high speed and reliable internet connection for business or personal use. The premises is experiencing increased demand from locals and visitors and is one of the most successful undertakings to come to West Kerry in recent times. It is one of the Peninsula’s strongest marketing tools and should be featured in promotional material used by all business outlets.

Race Night. The proceeds of the RACE NIGHT in Paddy Bawns on this Saturday night will go to offset the €8,000 costs relating to the annual Dingle New Years Eve Fireworks Display. First race is due to be screened at 9p.m.and horses can still be purchased either at Sheehys Spar or at the venue on Saturday night. Entry is free, there are 10 races on the card with betting costing just €2 per horse so a relatively inexpensive and enjoyable evenings entertainment guaranteed. Welcome. A belated Cead Mile Failte to the management, staff and students of the Sacred Heart College who have recently completed the purchase of the old CBS premises in John Street. We trust that the proposed renovation and development works will proceed unhindered and that the college will feature prominently in the ever evolving nature of our town for many years to come. Walking Festival. The annual WALKING FESTIVAL scheduled for February 16th to 18th will cover a large part of the Dingle Way this year. The usual Friday Evening walk will start at 6p.m. and Saturday and Sunday events offers a choice of long or short trips . On Saturday the long walk goes from Dingle to Dunquin and restarts on Sunday from there to Ballydavid covering 38km in total. The easier trip goes from Dingle to An Teampall Geal and return on Saturday and Dingle To Eask Tower and return on Sunday You have been warned so get exercising and join in what has proved to

Tidy Towns. The destruction of 4 flower tubs at Upper Goat Street over the New Year Weekend can only be described as utter vandalism and leaves our volunteers totally frustrated and very angry indeed. This of course follows on from the tubs already destroyed just 2 weeks previously. Any information on the likely culpits would be much appreciated and treated in confidence as such behaviour is an insult not alone to our volunteers but to all the lawabiding citizens of Corca Dhuibhne. High Vis . Once again we appeal to cyclists, runners, joggers and walkers to wear high vis vests or at least bright coloured clothing when on the roads either by day or by night particularly in areas not serviced by public lighting. Yes we can all be contributing factors to road safety and lead by example as well. Míle Buíochas.

At the Quay Wren's Ball Night, held in John Benny's recently, a cheque for €1,800 was presented to Michael Brosnan of the RNLI. The "Fear a'Tí'" John Benny made the presentation.

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly

tion. It will warm the lungs, thin mucous and alleviate coughs. Its antiinflammatory action can support arthritic and bronchial conditions and as a circulatory stimulant can be used for intolerance to cold particularly to support peripheral circulation. The dried root is better for warming the body internally. Its synergistic benefits make this herb an important addition to many herbal formulations supporting herbal preparations to reach their destination.

Ginger; Zingiber officinale

Preparation and dosage:

Parts Used; Root

Tincture dosage; 1.5 to 5mls three times daily

Family; Zingiberaceae

Juice of fresh herb or infusion as directed above

Ginger has been used throughout the world as an aromatic food herb for and is eaten daily in many Asian countries both for its taste and to preserve food in these hot countries. The herb is however much more than a food condiment with a broad range of therapeutic applications for the digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system. It’s use as a calming herb for stomach cramps and nausea is well known as is its use for preventing morning sickness and motion sickness. Its potency for viral infections however is often underestimated and at this time of the year as the cold and flu season is in full swing it is wise to stock up on this herb. It is readily available in its fresh form from most good vegetable shops and can be used both fresh and dried depending on the symptoms you are treating.

Decoction of dried root

Ginger is an important herb for the respiratory system and the hot tea from fresh ginger root can stop mild to moderate cold and flu viruses in its tracks particularly at the onset of symptoms. The tea will usually end any mild infection in a few days however if the symptoms persist in more severe cases the tea will help to thin the mucous, lower the fever, reduce coughing and slow the spread of the virus in the body. It can also be used as a gargle for sore throats. To make the tea juice one to two pieces of the root about the size of a small carrot, then combine a quarter cup of the juice with hot water to taste (it is quite a strong taste) and then add some honey and lime or lemon juice. This tea can be taken 4 to 6 times a day. An infusion can be made by grating or chopping the fresh ginger root ( a piece about the size of your thumb) as finely as you can then steep in 250mls of hot water for 2 to 3 hours covered to preserve the volatile oils in the tea. Drink 4 to 6 cups a day. The addition of an immune tincture complex is important when flu symptoms persist to support the body to fight this potentially dangerous illness. Fresh ginger root is an excellent anti-viral particularly for the respiratory system but it is also a good supportive herb for other viral infections and has been used for, for example, herpes, Epstein barr, hepatitis and candida. As a carminative for the digestive system the herb is effective against bacterial infections of the GI (gastro-intestinal) tract and for bacterial diarrheal conditions, for example, E coli and Helicobacter pylori. Ginger can also be taken for morning sickness where the dried root is preferable and for motion sickness. Internally ginger can be taken for arthritic conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The dried root can be taken as a decoction or in tincture form both for its analgesic and anti- inflammatory actions. Externally the essential oil of ginger can be used as a topical application for painful joints. The juice of the ginger root can also be used to relieve the pain of burns and to speed up healing and is a good antibacterial and antifungal when applied to skin infections Finally but very importantly ginger is what is known as a synergist, where the potency of both herbs and other medications is increased. Ginger is a good circulatory stimulant dilating blood vessels and increasing circulation helping the blood and the constituents in the blood from herbs or other medications to achieve faster and more effective distribution. This can have very positive effects for bacterial, viral and fungal infections as the potency of herbal formulas is increased. In TCM ginger is used in small amounts in as much as half of their formulas. In conventional medicine ginger can potentiate the activity of, for example, antibiotics, which can be useful for resistant infections but would need to be taken in conjunction with a medical practitioner or practising herbalist. In summary the fresh juice of ginger is an effective preparation particularly at the onset of cold and flu symptoms. It is a respiratory antiviral and can be used to alleviate fever, headache, runny nose, and nasal conges30 West Kerry Live

Safety considerations; Small dosages of the dried root only when using for morning sickness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the recommended dosage for morning sickness is no more than 2 grams of dried ginger daily. Caution is advised if taking other medications due to its synergistic action and best done in conjunction with a medical or herbal practitioner. Large doses may enhance the effects of anti-coagulant drugs Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Emerging Artists: Jade O’Connor Conor Browne

Explain what you do in 100 words ? I shudder at this question because it’s challenging to answer but here goes, try not to get lost: I am a professional Actor / Singer / Dancer. I choreograph, compose music / songs and I DJ for fun and a free night out! I work in many Art Forms - Theatre, Film, Music Videos, Photography, Performance Art and I collaborate with many different Artists and Theatre Companies! I am also the Co-Founder of Femme Bizarre - A New Theatre Company and Rebel Barre which is a Ballet Barre Fitness Company. Where did you learn to dance ? I learned to Dance at home. My mother Carol O’Connor is a Dance Artist and Movement practitioner. She also teaches Yoga, NIA and Creative Movement around the country. She trained at Laban, studied Jazz and Contemporary and was enthusiastic about all art forms as I was growing up. Music, Dance and Art were an enormous part of our lives and I was exposed to all sorts of Art worlds which explains my multi-disciplinary attitude! I started ballet and tap at 3 in London where we lived at the time and went on to study at the Kerry School of Music in Jazz, modern and Ballet, I was also in Muireann Joy’s wonderful award winning Slogadh Choir. Quaintly enough but very importantly her Mother Aine Joy was my Speech and Drama teacher who coached me and kept my marks up in the 97% average for years, she really encouraged me to work in the arts and supported me so much as I was growing up, I am forever grateful to her! I did much better at Speech and Drama than I did at Ballet because I was allowed to be free within a role and ballet can feel so restrictive. Being a little bit averse to authority speech and drama often suited me better! I went on to train at The Firkin Crane The Irish Institute for Dance and Choreography under the Director - Alan Foley for 2 years where I had my first taste of professional training, it was tough I had no idea I would be in physical pain every day and I was certainly ill prepared for the amount of hours that were required, while I was training I toured with Cork City Ballet and Crux Dance Theatre performing in many theatres and events around the country. I then auditioned for School’s in London and received a scholarship to train at Millennium Performing Arts - here I studied Meisner Technique and Method Acting, Music / Voice work and Dance including Graham Technique, Cunningham, Ballet, Jazz, Commercial Dance. We were required to take Ballet every day for one hour and a half and then the rest of the day would be an amalgamation

34 West Kerry Live

of different Classes the schedule was gruelling and extremely disciplined, we would arrive at 8.30am to warm-up, class would begin at 9am on the button and if you had a hair out of place you would be sent out, then we would continue to train until 5pm or 6pm if we were putting on a show we would be there until 9pm or 10pm! Crikey if I don’t get home these days by 8.30pm I’d be giving out!!! What dancer do you most identify with? Liza Minelli - ‘Cabaret’ and Shirley McClain - Sweet Charity. They are fearless and true triple threats! They had something that I think a lot of performers lack today and it was a love of art not fame. I haven’t deliberately chosen women but I identify with them the most. I love Misty Copeland - Prima Ballerina and I have so much respect for Dancers such as Martha Graham and Isadora Duncan who were true pioneers of contemporary dance at a time when Ballet was the only “professional Dance Form”. What’s your favourite dance piece? Matthew Bourne’s Picture of Dorian Grey which I saw at Saddler’s Well’s in London at the Midnight Matinee and was sitting next to Joan Rivers, hilarious!!! Also there is a lot of Irish work that I love - Oona Doherty’s - Hope which will be shown at Dublin Dance Festival this year, She is a force to be reckoned with and a true Dance Artist! Has dancing become work to you, do you still enjoy a bop in a club? Never, dancing only becomes work when you have to regurgitate the same steps in the exact same way every night! It’s a vocation, if you look at it like work you have already decided it is hard and a career in the arts is already hard enough so you might as well get a little light hearted. I only go out to have a bop in a club, but instead of exuding a refined dancer I seem to channel my inner raving ape and throw shapes as opposed to “cool moves” on the dance floor in fact the more someone presses me for pirouettes and high kicks for proof that I am indeed a dancer the more likely I am to start doing really crazy stuff! What memorable responses have you had to your work? I recently toured with Catherine Young Dance Company with a beautiful show called ‘Welcoming The Stranger’, we toured in Ireland and the Middle East most notably in Palestine. I Danced one of the lead parts in the show and composed a song that I sang with an incredible bunch of musicians and the response was enormous it was the first time I had really tapped into other peoples experiences to write a song. I wrote it in response to the Apartheid in Palestine and because of the courageous story of my brave friend Ahmed from Gaza who has suffered atrocities that are too difficult to stomach. He performs with us in the shows and is an incredibly inspiring human, I have learned so much from him especially his native dance The Dabke! When I performed it I got such a powerful response from the cast and the audience it was quite surreal. I hadn’t spent a lot of time writing it so it was a surprise to me that people liked it! When we performed the work in Ramallah it was at the same time as the hunger strike in the Palestinian prisons so the people were really on edge. They came to see our show and cried and cheered and nearly jumped up on the stage after. They said that they were suffering and the show brought some temporary relief, that feeling stays with me all the time. It was

such a visceral reaction for me that I carry the residue everywhere! What do you dislike about the dance scene? The dance world much like the art world can be very elitist and tight knit. I absolutely despise a system that excludes any people who can’t afford to take a ballet class for instance? How would you ever find out if you could dance if you can’t even afford to take a class, it’s absurd! People should be able to access all of the arts it is a right not a privilege. I am glad the perceptions of what a dancers body should look like is changing. Thanks to the likes of Misty Copeland we are seeing more strong athletic dancers coming through. “Dancers are the Athletes of God” Albert Einstein. This couldn’t be more true, the mental and physical tole it takes to be a dancer has been the cover up of the century. It is a huge sacrifice and massive undertaking, dance careers are volatile, short and gravely underappreciated. I have a distinct distaste for dance work that is abstract for the sake of being clever, that really irks me. Yes by all means be intellectual and make interesting work but don’t alienate the audience by trying to outsmart them. My mother is quite the advocate for dance in the community and worked tirelessly in Killorglin when I was growing up I feel the effects of that now from a human perspective and I feel the ripples of her effort in the praise she receives from students. Professionally, what’s your goal ? To make honest, new and fresh work. I embarked on a dance residency in Dance Ireland in Nov 2017 and I worked on my own. I have never been in total control of my own work I am usually working for a director or choreographer or with other performers, so it was really interesting, I discovered I have an album 75% ready to go so I have started recording already and will continue to do so throughout 2018. I will be making a music video with Gary Cahillane a film / documentary maker and the wonderous Artist - Rochelle Lucey, we will collaborate when I have recorded the material! I have many Film and Theatre projects in the diary from now until August / September 2018 so watch this space. I would also like to work on more political subjects like that of Palestine I feel that Dance is an excellent vehicle for voicing your opinions. Where can I see you perform ? I will be performing my very own show called ‘CAGED’ with my company Femme Bizarre with the extremely talented Kate Finegan, it will premiere at Scene and Heard festival at The Smock Alley Theatre 2nd of march. I choreographed and i am featured in a new music video by LOAH called Unveiled which will be available soon! And of course you will be able to hear my music and watch my Dance Films in the near future. I am a guest speaker at AIB’s Future Sparks Festival at The RDS 22nd March. Conor Browne is the head of Spoken Word for the K-fest Festival. K-fest is one of Ireland’s premier festivals for Emerging Art. To date, the festival has housed over 450 visual artists and approximately 2,000 original works of art, covering paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. In these interviews Conor will introduce you to some of the best emerging Artists born or practicing in Kerry.

Sore Feet in Kids Eddie O’Grady Sometimes I get a phone-call along the lines of this. Customer: Hello, I am ringing about my daughter. She has sore feet and I think she might need orthotics. Me: What age is your daughter? Customer: She is aged four. She is always complaining of pains in her feet when we go walking. Me: How long are the walks ? Customer: About 5 miles a day. Most likely the problem here is that 5 miles a day is too much walking for a kid of that age. It is not because they need orthotics. Sometimes also with older kids, somebody tells the parent their kid has flat feet. Parents want the best for their kids. They look at the kids feet and now for the first time notice they are flat and start to worry(for no reason). Many kids feet are pretty flat because they are just developing and growing. Feet can change and develop as kids go through adolescence and their bodies develop.

Even in itself flat feet, or the opposite, high arches, are not necessarily a problem. Many people go their whole lives with either flat feet or high arches, without problems. Do you want to be buying new orthotics every six months as kids grow. Buy them decent supportive shoes, get them to tie their laces properly and don't miss out on obvious things like the over-walking in infants, growing pains as a child develops, and unfortunately these days over-training in teens.

good at sports. I used to think ''should I give her orthotics ?'', because like all parents I wanted the best for her. I never did give her orthotics and she developed a perfectly normal gait and foot arch as she entered her teens.

Eddie O’Grady

Also social media etc. has us driven crazy thinking everything should be perfect, perfect bodies, perfect looks, perfect feet, perfect gait. In reality most of the photos on the internet are photo-shopped. The body has an amazing ability to adapt, so often imperfect bodies can achieve great things. I have never heard of a doctor recommending orthotics for young kids unless they have a very unusual condition. It is mostly people who stand to make a financial gain that are pushing them for kids. Because I prescribe orthotics myself for very specific conditions, 99 % in adults, I used to look at my own young daughter growing up, her feet going all over the place as she walked. She hadn't the perfect gait by any means, yet she was quiet

Ted Creedon Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer with the Cranberries, died suddenly in London on Monday while on a recording assignment. She was well known in West Kerry where she and her husband, Canadian Don Burton built a large house in Dún Chaoin in the mid-nineties. John and Mairín Moriarty, of Lord Baker's restaurant, knew the couple well. "They used to come into the restaurant all the time when they were building and living in the house in Dún Chaoin. Dolores was a beautiful singer and often sang Patsy Kline numbers in the restaurant for Máirín who is a big Patsy Kline fan. We became very friendly with them and spent a holiday with them one year at their home near Toronto in Canada," John told West Kerry Live this week. John was chairman of Dingle Tourism in 1996 and because of his friendship with Dolores it was suggested he invite her to the launch of a tourism campaign to promote the peninsula. The event was held in Benners Hotel and the actual launch was performed by Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. "We were invited to her 30th birthday party in Kilmallock. It was a very extravagant affair and I remember that there was great concern about their horses when the fireworks went off", John said. "The Cranberries were huge all over the world. Dolores often talked about their overseas concerts that attracted up to 60,000 fans. But fame didn't suit Dolores. She was very fond of Máirín and when she was alone in the house in Dún Chaoin or feeling lonely Máirín would go back to her to cheer her up. We're really shocked at her sudden death,'.
