Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 6th of February will be Martin McDonogh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. This darkly comic drama

received seven Oscar nominations including for Best Picture and Best Actress for Frances MacDormand who gives a bravura performance as the mother of a murder victim who seeks justice by painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, the town’s revered chief of police. The following week on Tuesday 13th February the feature will be the war drama Darkest Hour. Starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, the film follows his early days as Prime Minister, as Hitler closes in on Britain during World War II. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history. Oldman’s performance was praised, with many critics noting it as one of the best of his fine career; he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. 4 West Kerry Live

K-Fest: Call To All Visual Artists

Michael Makes The Final

Visual arts submissions are now being accepted for K-FEST, which takes place in Killorglin from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4, 2018. Submissions, including images of proposed artwork, photo of the artist, biography, and artist statement, among other items, may be sent via email to Neil Browne, K-FEST Artistic Director, at submissions@kfest.ie. Submissions are due at midnight March 9, 2018. In its sixth consecutive year, K-FEST will once again take over the town of Killorglin, exhibiting more than 100 visual artists across all disciplines, including paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. Selected artists show their work in curated, bespoke pop-up galleries throughout the town’s disused commercial and private spaces. Since 2013, KFest has housed over 600 visual artists and approximately 3,000 original works of art. K-FEST aims to nurture the growth of the arts and music, to foster participation in the arts and artistic thought, and, to promote culture in all its forms. The K-FEST name is associated with artistic exploration and excellence, cultural innovation, and with showcasing of fun, eclectic, and thought-provoking events while setting and maintaining highproduction standards across all its programmes.

Best wishes to Micheál O’Shea from Castlemaine will be amongst the finalists taking to the stage to compete for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal on Friday 2 February in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork. The event will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Micheál is from Castlemaine and he started off on tin whistle and moved to accordion at the age of nine. His earliest music influence was his sister Cailín. Travelling to various musical festivals around Ireland with her offered him the opportunity to develop his music and meet many wonderful musicians and friends. His accordion playing has been influenced by the music of countless players such as Danny O’Mahony, Joe Cooley, Tony MacMahon and P.J Conlon, to name but a few.

Farming News Louis Murchan KERRY STUDENT A WINNER Karen O’Neill, a Glencar native, has been selected as the student winner in the ‘Up close and personal’ category of the British Ecological Society, Capturing Ecology – photography competition. Karen a PhD research student at Dundee University, who is currently working on the Kerry LIFE EU co-funded LIFE demonstration project based in South Kerry, won the award with her photo “Canopy Bubble”. The photo captures the reflection of the overhead tree canopy in a bubble on the surface of tributary the Kerry Blackwater river. The British Ecological Society annual photography competition ‘Capturing Ecology’ includes images taken by international ecologists and students, to celebrate various aspects of ecology. Richard O’Callaghan Kerry LIFE team leader commented “Karen’s scientific work on the Kerry LIFE project is invaluable and the team have been impressed with the many fine images she has captured in the Caragh & Blackwater river catchments whilst working with us. We are delighted to see her photograph recognised in such a prestigious competition. HEN HARRIER SCHEME It was an exciting week for Project Manager, Fergal Monaghan and his team on the EIP-AGRI funded Hen Harrier Project. Officially launched by Michael Creed T.D. and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Hen Harrier Project is the first EIP-AGRI Operational Group under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The €25m project will provide an opportunity for the farming community to be acknowledged and in turn rewarded for delivering environmental benefits. The launch of the Hen Harrier Project took place during a visit to the farm of Jack Lynch, who farms in the Hen Harrier SPA near Ballyvourney, outside Macroom, Co. Cork. This is a critical programme which seeks to save one of Ireland’s most endangered birds, the Hen Harrier and is a prime example of a locallyled results-based scheme which will combine meaningful conservation measures in the six SPA hen harrier areas. To find out more about the Hen Harrier Project and the Programme Team log onto their newly developed website. The programme is also now open for applications and it is simple and free to apply, by submitting an Expression of Interest form. COMMENCEMENT OF 2018 FORESTRY PREMIUM PAYMENTS The first bulk payment of annual tax-free forestry premiums for 2018 has now commenced. The payments are currently being issued to forest owners who applied through the Department’s online services website www. agfood.ie. 7,300 forest premium applications have been paid this week amounting to €27.8 million. This first payment is for applications received online which shows the benefit of applying online for forest owners. I would encourage others to consider this option in future. The beginning of each year is a good time to consider their options and many are encouraged to consider forestry as a land use option. There are a range of schemes available under the current Forestry Programme so landowners should check those out in order to make a fully-informed decision. Forest owners who have not submitted their online applications so far, can still apply online for their forestry premiums through the IFORIS Internet portal on the Department’s Online Services website. For applicants who use the paper based application system, it is envisaged that a further bulk premium payment run will be made in April 2018. Application forms for the paper based system will be issued in February 2018 to forest owners who have not availed of the online application process by early February. UP-COMING DEADLINES FOR GLAS PARTICIPANTS All GLAS 3 participants must have their Farm Nutrient Management Plan prepared and submitted by 31 March 2018. GLAS 1 & 2 participants were required to complete a GLAS Training day prior to 31 December 2017. Those who were unable to complete the Training before Jan 2017, may have their payments paused until they have completed a GLAS training day. The Department will monitor the position of GLAS 1 & 2 in the first quarter of 2018 to facilitate the completion of outstanding GLAS 1 & GLAS 2 participant courses in the shortest possible timeframe to avoid any undue delay in payments to farmers. GLAS 3 participants will have until 31 December 2018 to complete their training day. SHEEP CENSUS REMINDER This year’s sheep census must be returned to the department by the 31st of January, (14th of February if doing online) 12 West Kerry Live

If you are posting your census make sure and register post it and hold on to the receipt as it is the only acceptable proof of postage in the case of a dispute. The number of sheep that you put on your census should be the amount of sheep in your flock on the 31st of December 2017. DEADLINE FOR TAMS II APPLICATIONS 23 FEBRUARY 2018 We are now in the 9th tranche of TAMS II scheme. The deadline for submitting an application for the current tranche of TAMS II is 23 February 2018. To date the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine have received over 15,424 applications and 11,864 farmers have received approval to undertake their investments. Only 3,138 payment claims have been received with a total of €32.57 million paid out for investments to date. There is a budget of €70 million available for spend under TAMS II 2018. The most popular schemes applied for in 2017 were:

Schemes under TAMS II include Animal Welfare & Nutrient Storage Scheme (AWNSS); Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme (YFCIS); LowEmissions Slurry Spreading Scheme (LESS); Organic Capital Investment Scheme (OCIS); Dairy Equipment Scheme (DES); Pig & Poultry Capital Investment Scheme (PPCIS) and Tillage Capital Investment Scheme (TCIS). SHEEP WELFARE SCHEME REMINDER The Sheep Welfare Scheme (€10 per ewe) has opened for year two of applications. Farmers who wish to join the scheme or have any questions can contact the sheep welfare scheme section on (076) 106 4420 or email sheepscheme@agriculture.gov.ie. An application form will then be issued. Closing date for applications is this Friday the 2nd of February. SLURRY SPREADING BAN COMES TO AN END From the 1st of February farmers will be allowed to spread slurry on the lands for the first time in Donegal in 2018. It is very unlikely that there will be any slurry spread this week due to the continuous rain that we are having in this part of the Ireland since the start of the month. When spreading slurry farmers must always keep in mind the Nitrates directive and try to avoid any penalties under this directive and if you are employing a contractor to carry out this work make sure that he is aware of the do’s and don’ts with regard slurry spreading. NEW LEGISLATION IN RELATION TO SINGLE FARM PAYMENT ENTITLEMENTS There has being a new Statutory instrument (SI No 639 of 2017) being bought into force since the 21st of November 2017. This instrument states the following and makes major changes to the way that entitlements are treated by the Department of Agriculture when someone makes a will. Where a deceased person bequeaths land in a will and: • at the time of his or her death held an allocation of payment entitlements under Regulation 1307/2013, and • made no provision for those payment entitlements in his or her will such payment entitlements (or share of) shall transfer with the eligible land unless there is a legal impediment preventing the transfer. What this is basically saying that since this instrument was introduced that basic payment entitlements now go with the land and are split as the land is split in a will. They can’t fall into the residual of the will and end up in the hands of a person that wasn’t intended to get them. NEW RULES FOR DEROGATION FARMERS FROM THIS YEAR From this year on from the 15th of June any farmer in Derogation will have to adhere to the following changes 50% of slurry must be spread by the 15th of June this year Any slurry spread after this date must be spread using the low emission slurry spreading. By 2021 all farmers farming above 170kgN/HA must fence all watercourses permanently from cattle and place any water troughs back 20 m from the watercourse. Watercourses must be fenced back 1.5 m with a permanent fence. From the 1st of January this year a soil sample must be taken for every 5 ha of land and every 4 years. Need to have sufficient storage on farm for 20 weeks - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Chocolate Babka- the most delicious pastry you will make this year! Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School What is Chocolate Babka you may ask? Simply put, it is a chocolate pastry or a chocolate filled bread. Think of something like a slice of sweet bread filled with swirls of gooey chocolate. It is a Jewish pastry or bread and has roots from both the Ukraine and Russia. Since then it has travelled to New York where the addition of chocolate seems to have made it one of the most delicious and addictive pastries you can make. There is a small bit of work with this, but only in planning ahead. Ideally you need to make the dough the night before you want it. The good news is though that it has a shelf life of four days - that is if you can resist it. Give it a go and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Ingredients For the dough 1 tsp. dried yeast

Prepare and line a 2lb bread tin with greaseproof paper. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to form a large rectangle (about 25cm x 40cm). Spread the chocolate mixture generously over the surface of the dough. Sprinkle the hazelnuts over the chocolate mixture. Roll the dough tightly from one of the long ends to form a log. Place this in a fridge for about 20 minutes if the dough is very soft. Cut the log in half lengthways. Leave the cut sides facing up and starting at one end overlap / plait one half over the other half (make sure to leave the cut side with the chocolate mixture facing upwards. Continue to overlap right until you reach the other end. Place the platted log in the bread tin (making sure that the chocolate is facing upwards). Leave this aside for about 2 hours to allow it to rise. To make the topping

100g milk

Place the sugar, water and honey in a pot and place over a medium heat for about 5 minutes.

1 tsp. caster sugar

Preheat the oven to 180ÂşC.

100g butter, cubed and at room temperature

Put the tin in the oven and bake it for about 35 minutes.

1 egg pinch of salt

Once you remove it from the oven spoon the topping over the top. Allow it to cool before slicing.

250g flour

Enjoy!!!

For the chocolate filling 100g butter, cubed 100g caster sugar 100g dark chocolate, cut into small pieces 30g good cocoa powder 50g hazelnuts, toasted and crushed For the topping 60g sugar 80ml water 1 tsp. honey Method For the dough Place the yeast, milk and the caster sugar in a mixer and using a spade attachment mix on a low speed for about 2-3 minutes. Allow this to rest for about 10 minutes to allow the yeast to start working. Change the attachment of the mixer to a dough hook and add the butter, egg and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix this on a low speed for about 5 minutes and then add the flour and continue to mix for another 5 minutes or so or until it has become a smooth mixture. Put the mixture into a bowl and cover it. Keep it in a cool place for at least 4 hours or in a fridge overnight. For the chocolate filling Place the butter, sugar and chocolate in a bowl and place this over a pot of boiling water. Allow the butter and chocolate to melt and at this stage the sugar should have dissolved. Stir in the cocoa powder and then remove the bowl and leave to one side. To assemble

Keeping the Mammoth from the Door! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Stress is one of those words bandied about so often that we hardly think about its meaning or effect. While the body’s ability to deal with acute stress is quite amazing from a physiological point of view, the long-term effects of chronic stress is a different story that rarely has a happy ending. Back in the day, when we first emerged from our darkened caves, our innate stress response helped us to survive life-threatening events such as a woolly mammoth waiting outside, ready to eat you and your family! The stress response, governed by a host of stress hormones, launched itself into survival mode - the fight or flight response. Every system in the body is affected by this response as it overrules all regular functions to either heighten or quieten organ systems to deal with the crisis at hand. The effect of the stress response can be felt throughout the body - increased heart rate, faster breathing, tense muscles, sweaty skin, stomach upset - all of which are recognizable symptoms of a body preparing to stand up and fight that woolly mammoth or to run as fast as it can in the opposite direction. For the caveman, the stress response proved useful to protect him during such adverse events. He either got away, killed the beast or was eaten himself - all of which resulted in a short-lived stress response. Luckily for him, except in the last scenario, he had time to recover and recuperate before another woolly mammoth would threaten him. Nowadays, the increasing pressures and expectations placed on modern society to “do it all and have it all” is akin to having that mammoth visit every single day! Physical changes that occur in the body during the stress response quickly return to normal as soon as the stress has been resolved. Our bodies go into rest and recovery mode once the threat has passed and the coast is clear. In chronic stress, the stress never goes and the physical effects of the stress response can be long-lasting, many of which can manifest as disease or disorders. In chronic stress, the coast is never clear disrupting our restful periods and hindering our recovery. The constant rush of stress hormones places a lot of wear and tear on the body, increases inflammation and ages the body making it more susceptible to disease. A good example of this brings us back to Mr. Caveman and his woolly adversary. In “fight or flight” mode the body prepares to be wounded and to bleed - the 18 West Kerry Live

stress response diverts blood flow towards the heart and muscles, away from the skin to reduce blood loss. It is also responsible for increasing clotting factors (to stop bleeding) and increase inflammatory markers (to prevent infection and immobilize injured tissue). When these measures are applied to unresolved stress overtime they can manifest as heart disease, strokes or arthritis. Similarly, what is felt as a stomach upset during a moment of stress can also manifest as IBS, recurrent gastritis, stomach ulcers and cancer in the long-term.

ing that most of us eat a few times a day, every day - improving your diet will have a significant impact on how your body deals with stress, how well it recovers from stress as well as eliminating any unnecessary triggers. A wholesome and varied diet, based on natural foods not only provides the body with plenty of nutrients to handle the undesirable effects of stress but also ensures there is one less woolly mammoth in your life!

The role of nutrition in chronic stress is multifactorial. Not only does prolonged stress have a negative effect on your nutritional status and needs, your eating habits also influence how prone you are to stress, the intensity of the stress response and your ability to cope with unavoidable or unforeseen stress. The better nourished your body is, the better you will recover and repair from the physical assault of the stress response. A poorly fed body not only is a source of Solar Systems stress, triggering symptoms as described above, but it also provides nothing to rebuild and reTom Kennedy store the body when most needed.

Beaufort Film Night (beaufortfilmnight@gmail.com) Do people change situations or do situations change people? What happens when good men do something? These are the questions at the heart of the film, The Lives of Others, which will be screened by Beaufort Film Night at their inaugural event which takes at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, on Friday 9th February at 8.30pm. Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night will be carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings. To coincide with the new Kerry-Berlin air route Beaufort Film Night will screen the multi-award winning German classic, “The Lives of Others” (Das Leben der Anderen). Set in East Berlin in 1984, the plot begins with dedicated Stasi Captain Gerd Wiesler who is tasked with leading a surveillance operation on playwright Georg Dreymann and his actress partner Christa-Maria Sieland. What follows is an extraordinary tale of courage, power, choice, and redemption behind the Orwellian Iron Curtain. “The Lives of Others” is a political thriller and a human drama which reinforces the value of arts and culture in shaping us as humans. The film €25 is €35 in German with English subtitles and is the most successful German €30 film €40 ever made in terms of awards, amongst them both the Academy €14 Award and BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film, the European Film €25 Award for Best Film and the French César Award for Best Foreign Film. The €20 Lives of Others is a tour de force which was best described by the UK€25Daily Telegraph as a magnificent tribute to the human soul.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Registration Day and Football Gear Swap Shop It’s that time of year again when the evenings are getting longer, and our children have a spring in their step! The coaches and mentors at our club have been busy up-skilling during the winter months and are eagerly looking forward to imparting their new skills during the busy footballing season ahead. Registration for football will be on Sunday February 11th at the Milltown/Castlemaine GAA clubhouse between 12 and 1.30 pm. Drop off for the Swap Shop will be on Friday (February 9th) 6-6.30pm and also on Saturday morning (February 10 Th) 10-10.30 at the club house. There will also be some new club gear for sale on the day at knockdown prices. DON’T BUY A HEARING AID until you have trialled the Hearing Aid Risk-Free.

The outdoor Thursday evening sessions will begin in early April. Membership for Under 6 boys and Under 6 girls is FREE. However, it is very important that every child registers with the club on February 11th -thus allowing them to participate in club activities throughout the year. Registration is also necessary for insurance purposes and it also ensures that we have sufficient mentors assigned to each age group. Membership rates are as follows: Adult €50, Couple €80, Family (Two Adults and all Children U-18) €100 U16/Student/OAP €30 As the club looks to develop new facilities to cater for the growing local population, we would ask you to consider our family membership. This entitles every family member to be entered into draws for tickets to Kerry games, including the All-Ireland Final (if Kerry are in it!) You also get free entry into all home club league games in Milltown during the year. Most importantly, you are contributing to the growth of a very important outlet for children in our community. West Kerry Live 25

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams FEILE NA STOIRME. The Storm Festival, now in its third year, has a load of interesting activities planned right across the Peninsula this weekend. The programme has events happening here in Dingle from 11.30a.m. on Friday morning to 3.30p.m. on Sunday afternoon and full details of all events are available elsewhere in this edition. So as always all I can say is get out there and enjoy some of these unique and wonderful choices happening right on your doorstep. AWARDS. More happy news stories coming our way with prestigious national awards of different kinds highlighting the enterprise and beauty of West Kerry. Holden Leathergoods won the Top Designer Ireland Award at the Showcase Ireland International Creative Expo in Dublin. Conor and Claire actually employ 9 people locally between the Burnham Workshop and Holyground outlet in town. It goes to show that a small enterprise in a rural town can survive, prosper, gain national recognition and create employment with the right product and careful management. Inch Strand has this week been named as Irelands Number 1 Strand both for its well kept eco friendly surface and its consumer friendly on shore and off shore facilities. The Dingle New Music Choir And Orchestra were recently presented with the latest NEWKD and KERRY GROUP Community Vibrancy Recognition Award in honour of their wonderful productions over the past few years. PARTY. The Annual Senior Citizens Party will be held in the Dingle Skellig Hotel on this Sunday February 4th starting at 2p.m. Some tickets still available from the usual outlets. NEW LINK ROAD. News just coming to hand that the sum of 1.8million

Euro has been included in this year’s budgets for the development of the proposed Link Road between Spa Road and Upper Goat Street. This long awaited facility will complete the town bypass and if properly managed should ensure faster entry, access and exit situations for all road users. Great news indeed and thanks to our politicians, local council engineers and staff, to the local organisations who lobbied for several years for the facility and also to the land owners who agreed to sell part of their properties to facilitate the new road. Subject to planning works should commence within the next few months and of course create more employment in the area. CARDS. Feile na Bealtaine will be holding their annual 31 card drive in the Dingle Pub on Sunday February 11th starting at 6p.m. Novices to seasoned and experienced players all very welcome to join in the fun for a very good cause. DINGLE WALKING FESTIVAL. As featured in our last edition this popular annual event will this year take in at least two sections of the DINGLE WAY over the weekend of February 16th to 18th this year. A local survey undertaken last year came up with the startling statistic that only 3 out of every 10 adults interviewed could honestly say they knew how to find the DINGLE WAY or had ever even walked any of this magnificant asset on our doorsteps. With the aim of offering locals and particularly people involved in the tourist trade an opportunity to educate themselves and experience the great outdoors in good company it was decided to walk from Dingle to Dunquin on the Way route on the Saturday and from Dunquin To Feoghanagh on the Sunday. Bus transport will be provided to and from Dunquin both days and pick up facilities along the Way if required for those wishing to retire early. Yes such a great opportunity should not be missed so get the gear (proper boots and clothing) ready and a few practice trips around Sli na Slainte should get the fitness livels up to scratch fairly quickly. Shorted walks are also on offer on Friday Night as well as on both Saturday and Sunday Mornings.

DBR Duck Race

Movie Review Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Pierce Hoare Jnr. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri is an excellent dark comedy film by Martin McDonagh, director of Seven Psychopaths and In Bruges. I will warn that the movie is not suitable for younger audiences as it contains a lot of strong language and a few graphicly violent scenes. Woody Harrelson and lead actor Frances McDormand both give fantastic performances and the two characters play off each other well, only coming second to Sam Rockwell’s acting which is astounding in this movie. The characters themselves have a lot of depth and you can go from hating them in one scene then loving them in the next and the protagonist is no exception, but I won’t go into any more detail as I think it is best to go into this movie blind. The dark comedy works well in the movie, making most if not all of the audience members laugh in the Dingle Phoenix Cinema when I saw it. The camera work and cinematography are amazing with some beautiful shots that I would turn into desktop wallpapers and another long take that must have taken ages to perfect. One issue most people seem to have with the movie is it’s ending but if you’ve seen Martin McDonagh’s other movie, In Bruges, you know what to expect from the director. Personally, I would recommend going to see this movie if you don’t mind the adult themes and harsh language. Go dtaga do Ríocht. WestKerryLive I Ríocht Lesotho le Beirní Ní Chuinn, Corraghráig.

Seeds Galore Now February 2018 is upon us it is time to really focus on checking our seed stock. I store my old seed in biscuit tins which I keep in a cool dry place. In late autumn, I collected some seed of Silybum marianum (Milk thistle) Perilla (Shiso) and Centaurea macrocephala (Giant knapweed) This was done by simply cutting the ripening seed stalks from the plant and placing them in brown paper bags to finish the ripening process. Hybrid varieties with extended names such as oriental poppy ‘Pizzicato’ or lupins ‘The Governor’ will not come true to type which means they will revert to an original wild species and will not exhibit the same characteristics – perhaps height or colour may be different however it is fun to see what will emerge. Once dried, seeds are ready to be extracted from their pods or capsules. The unwanted chaff (husk or seed casing) can be removed by the gentle act of blowing and the seed then stored in marked envelopes. This exercise reminds me of my student days in the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin where on wet days we would be sent to the herbarium to prepare a myriad of seeds from all over the world. It was a lovely relaxing chore which I found quite interesting but not one you would want to be doing all day. Those who were more learned in the subject of taxonomy would take great pride in pronouncing the exotic botanical names along with an exclamation of where they came from - which was usually another Botanic Gardens. Seed often got exchanged between institutions and sometimes a very rare variety would cause tremendous excitement in the seed room. I recall on a few occasions blowing too strongly and sending one of these rarities half way across the table - a scramble to retrieve it would ensue. If it got lost, which sometimes did happen with tiny seed, an uncomfortable silence would follow. Saving and distributing rare seeds is a very important task, it helps to preserve many species which are on the brink of extinction. Our planet has already lost millions of species and according to the ‘World Checklist of Selected Plant Families(WCSP) at Kew Gardens between 20-30% of those in existence are threatened including those which yet remain undiscovered – such diversity is mind- boggling. It is important to compile your postal seed order as soon as possible because many varieties sell out quickly and become unavailable in February. Most packets contain far too many seeds for the average home grower so swap with friends or retain some for the following year. Certain seeds such as cucumber and courgette do not store well while others such as tomatoes can last for years. Test them prior to sowing by placing them on a saucer of damp kitchen paper in a warm position and covering with plastic to preserve moisture. If the seeds fail to sprout within a week or so then you know you are out of luck. My favourite companies are Seedaholic, Tamar Organics and Chiltern seeds - it is an absolute joy for me to research unusual varieties and new additions each year! The seed selection in garden centres, supermarkets, and shops has expanded greatly, providing easy access to many varieties, particularly for first-time growers, If you are new to growing let me recommend easy vari-

Inflammation Of The Fat Pad

Treating Fat Pad Pain

Eddie O’Grady One common cause of heel pain is inflammation of the fat pads. This typically occurs after repeated, forceful or prolonged activity. Examples include continuous jumping(gymnasts), chronically excessive heel strike(runners), jumping from high lading on heel. Decreased elasticity of the fat pad can also be a contributory factor. Other contributory factors include increased age, weight, poor footwear. Fat Pad Displaced Or Thinned Sometimes the cause can be that the fat pad has become displaced or thinned. In this type of injury, the heel pain will feel like a deep ache or a bruise. And you will find it extremely difficult to walk barefoot or on hard surfaces. Fat Pad Pain Differs From Plantar Fasciitis While both heel pad injuries and plantar fasciitis cause heel pain, the injuries differ. Plantar fasciitis sufferers usually experience a sharper pain in a specific spot on the inner heel. Fat pad pain is usually felt around

Overload Heel Pain Location

Plantar Fasciitis Pain Location

the outside of the heel. It can sometimes be felt closer to the instep area, but is less specific than where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. Keep in mind that the fat pad is the fat that covers the heel bone(calcaneous) of the foot acting as a shock absorber and cushion, so often the pain is more general and less severe than plantar fasciitis pain, which follows a fairly specific pain pattern. Also there is usually pain on the arch of the foot with plantar fasciitis and the first steps in the morning or after rest are often very painful. Plantar fasciitis is much more common than fat pad pain. If in doubt, an MRI will differentiate between both. This can be important because treatment protocols are slightly different for each as are the orthotics for the different conditions.

There are a variety of different options to help treat fad pad pain. Staying off your feet as much as possible initially is always recommended. A cushioned orthotic which in itself acts like a fat pad, but also spreads the load under the foot is usually highly effective.

Tips on how to Reduce Waste le Transition Corca Dhuibhne Grow your own food to cut down on packaging and food waste. Start with an easy vegetable like garlic: split up organic or locally grown bulbs of garlic into cloves then put each clove, pointy side up, just beneath the soil surface, 6-8 inches apart. Plant before the end of February, clear the area of weeds every now and then and water during a prolonged dry spell. Séamus Knightly from Annascaul is a past pupil of Scoil Bhreac Chluain and attends CBS The Green, Tralee. Séamus with his team Kian Trant and Conor Crowley were awarded third place in the Technology Intermediate Group for their project 'Blind and Elderly Assistance Project -Artificial Intelligence for the Blind' at the BT Young Scientist Awards held in Dublin earlier this month. Photo L - R: Kian Trant, Séamus Knightly & Conor Crowley.

Harvest about 6 months after planting, for each clove planted you'll get a new bulb of garlic. Continue the growing obsession ... plant spuds in March and salads in April. There are lots of online websites with resources, https://giy.ie/get-growing/ http://www.no-dig-vegetablegarden.com for example. Ádh mór. West Kerry Live 35

Caid Is mór an mí-sheans a bhí le foireann na Gaeltachta i nDúrlas Éile an Satharn so caite. Is minic é ráite go leanann ádh bua agus mí-ádh cailliúint. his eternal reward on Wednesday last. George Rice in a graveside oration at his funeral on Thursday paid a fitting tribute to Eugie, his republican beliefs and ideals, honesty and integrity and a lone piper playing the perfect Eulogy “The Wearing of The Green “ led Eugies cortege to his final resting place in Camp Cemetary alongside his father Pasty and mother Katie. R.I.P.

ghan O Duibhne raised the National Flag at the 1916 Community Centenary Commemoration in Camp Community Sports Field, along with one of his own dedicated community contemporaries, Brigid Ní Mhoráin R.I.P. And at the Old School along with Seamus O Donnell R.I.P. another esteemed historian of our time, no longer with us, Eugie delivered an historical account of events of the 1916 period in the Camp locality.

Eugie lived and played GAA, he was on the Camp team that won the 3 in a row in the 1950’s. And he wrote the book of Camp Football spanning an era from 1890 – 1953. Sean Murphy, Kerry and Camp footballer delivered a heartfelt tribute to Eugie his colleague and lifelong friend at Ashes Bar after the funeral Sean reminisced on the rich tapestry of football woven by players like Eugie, the thread of which lives on in the youth of Camp today. HOMEOPATH

A total of 19 Irish published books will compete in respective categories for the Best in the World rankings to be handed out in Yantai, China May 25-28. Launched at the 2017 Dingle Food Festival, Dingle Dinners profiles 26 chefs of Dingle, tells the stories of how they came to the rural outpost, why they came and, importantly, why they stayed. Serving up 3-course menus that the chefs would make for their own family and friends rather than restaurant food, the premise of the book is unique. Elaine Kennedy, another Dingle resident, is responsible for the profile photography of the chefs in the book. “It was an honour and privilege to not only tell the stories of these wonderful men and women of Dingle’s kitchens,” Gleason says, “but to have this book represent Ireland in the growing category of Culinary Travel and Tourism at these international awards is also quite humbling. I can’t thank the chefs of Dingle and the books supporters enough – especially The Dingle Whiskey Distillery, Blas na hÉireann, and the Dingle Food Festival” Gleason - a former winner of The Prestige Award of the International Jury from Gourmand International for his memoire Chef Interrupted; Discovering Life’s Second Course in Ireland with Multiple Sclerosis (The Collins Press, 2017) – lives and writes in Dingle, Kerry and Seattle, USA with his wife, Caryn and their two wheaten terriers, Sadie and Maggie.

Cromane GAA MUNSTER JUNIOR B SEMI-FINAL: Our rearranged (for the second time) Munster Junior B semi-final against Cashel King Cormacs is due to finally be played this Sunday in Knockaderry, Co. Limerick. Throw-in time is 2pm. We have reached the last four stage courtesy of winning the county Novice title last October. We then secured a 0-10 to 0-5 win over the Clare champions, Banner GAA Club, from Ennis last December in a game also played in Knockaderry. The winners of this second semi-final will play the Limerick champions, Ballybrown, in the final which has been provisionally fixed for Sunday, February 4. This game will also be played in Knockaderry. Our lads have been preparing for this game since it was postponed before Christmas. They worked hard throughout 2017, and into 2018, to get to this stage so they deserve our support on Sunday. Best of luck lads. Mid Kerry League: Cromane 1-13, Glenbeigh-Glencar 0-14 A goal two minutes from time off the knee of Donnchadh Walsh got us over the line in an exciting Mid Kerry League game on Saturday evening. It was a novel game as it was played under lights at the John Mitchels GAA complex in Tralee. The pitch was in great condition and both sides played some mighty football at times. In the end Cromane’s edge in fitness, given we have our Munster Junior B FC semifinal coming up next weekend probably told. The first half was dominated by GlenbeighGlencar with Pa Kilkenny at centre-forward and Jason McKenna at full-forward causing problems. Midway through the half however we were still within reach trailing by just a point, 0-3 to 0-2 (Mikey Houlihan and Sean O’Sullivan with our scores). Then our opponents started to stretch us and points from Tommy Cahill, Kilkenny and McKenna pushed them ahead 0-8 to 0-4. A late Sean O’Sullivan free for Cromane reduced the gap to three at the break, 0-8 to 0-5. We had plenty of work to do at the break and some straight talking fixed a few problems. However, it would take a few minutes into the second half before a better performance materialised. Glenbeigh-Glencar shot out of the blocks with two quick McKenna points pushing them out to a double-score lead again, 0-10

to 0-5. This was when we started to settle and gain a stranglehold on the game as Donnchadh Walsh and Finbar Casey at midfield, John Michael Foley at centre-back and Sean Teahan at full-back got on top of their direct opponents. One of our best performers during the game were our three senior debutants, Ethan Griffin who started at wing-back, as well as Shane O’Neill and Cathal Crosby who came on subs early in this second half. Their speed of thought and extra running ability gave us a quick lift. Between the 33rd minute, when Sean O’Sullivan knocked over his fourth point of the evening, up to the 48th minute we hit eight points without reply to power ahead. This purple patch was lit up by some fine points from Sean, Mikey, Shane O’Neill, and Emmet Casey. Thanks to this 15 minute spell of dominance we went from five down to three up (0-13 to 0-10) with 10 to play. However, given the openness of the game and the resultant excitement, Glenbeigh-Glencar were not done yet and got their second wind as we retreated. They then had their best scoring spell in the game hitting four unanswered scores, three from McKenna and one from Bernard Murphy to put them back in front, 0-14 to 0-13 with four minutes left on the clock. That still left plenty of time for Donnchadh to power through onto the end of a fine move to finish a ball to net - via his knee! A good start to 2018 now all eyes turn to preparing for the Munster Junior FC semi-final next Sunday. Let’s make sure the lads get the support they deserve they have been working hard through the Christmas and into the New Year and they have earned our backing. Cromane scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 0-7 (0-4 frees), Donnchadh Walsh 1-1, Mikey Houlihan 0-3, Emmet Casey 0-1, Shane O’Neill 0-1. Cromane team: Paudie McCarthy; Shane Ahern, Sean Teahan, Stephen Foley; Ethan Griffin, John Michael Foley, Liam Teahan; Finbar Casey, Donnchadh Walsh; Matt Colborne, Micheal Shaughnessy, Niall Dennehy; Mikey Houlihan, Sean O’Sullivan, Emmet Casey. Replacements: Shane O’Neill and Cathal Crosby for N Dennehy and M Colborne 35th minute, Eamon O’Connor for S Ahern 55th minute. UNDER-21s: Mid Kerry Under-21 semi-final result: Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 0-12, Beaufort 1-5 GGC qualified for the Mid Kerry U21 final with a mighty four-point win in Beaufort. They were much the better the team in the first half, aided by a strong breeze, and led by 0-5 to 0-2 at the break. The tide looked to be turning against them early in the second half when a goal from Ciaran Kennedy and points from Kennedy and Mike Breen pushed the home side ahead, 1-4 to 0-6 with 15 minutes left. However, GGC settled and some great play from Conor Sugrue, Caolim Teahan, Darren Houlihan, and Dara Casey led to their best patch of play over the 60 minutes. With the Beaufort still ahead by one, 1-5 to 0-7,

GGC hit five unanswered points in the last 10 minutes (four from Caolim Teahan, 2 frees, and a free from Darren Houlihan) to run out fourpoint winners: 0-12 to 1-5.
