Manx Shearwater Alert! The Bird Watch Ireland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings. They can be attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. If you find one of these birds, please ring one of the volunteers listed below who will come and collect the bird and release it safely back to the wild. If possible, put the bird into a cardboard box; do not give it any food or water and keep it in a quiet and safe place until a volunteer arrives. If you find one contact: Britta (Ventry and Dingle) - 087 2435845), Richard (Ballyferriter and Ballydavid) - 086 3168150, Catherine (Ventry and Dingle) – 087 9834823, Breda (Dingle) - 087-2438697

Kerry ILFA Friendship Golf Classic Beaufort Golf Club will host a golf classic being organised by the ILFA Kerry Branch on the 3rd October to raise awareness and funds for the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association and the Kerry Hospice Foundation. While this has been a challenging year for everyone, charitable organisations, including ILFA and the Kerry Hospice Association, have been humbled by the generosity and support of the public. However, with so many charitable events cancelled it has been hard to raise awareness of the indispensable work charities carry out. The aim of the golf classic (which will be held in adherence to strict COVID guidelines) will therefore not only be to raise vital funds for these two organisations but also to highlight the work of ILFA and the Kerry Hospice Association. The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association is a voluntary organisation which was set up in 2002 to support patients and families living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. There are approximately 400 patients diagnosed in Ireland with the condition each year. In addition to supporting patients and their families and to raising awareness of organ donation, the ILFA is trying to establish a clinical platform so that the condition could be diagnosed faster thus leading to more treatment options and better patient outcomes. The Kerry Hospice Foundation is also a voluntary association. It was set up in 1990 to provide funding and support for palliative care services in Kerry. In addition to the longstanding commitment to financially support the Palliative Care Service in Kerry each year to the cost of €100,000, the foundation also provides funding for services such as extra nursing care, equipment, aids and appliances to enable people to live more comfortably in their own homes, ongoing education of nurse specialists and crucially in the current climate they provide extra support for patients and their families. Anyone wishing to support these charities through this fundraising event 6 West Kerry Live

Hope Guatamala News Thanks to everyone who helped to feed the starving Mayan children and their families during Covid 19. With funds raised in Ireland and Germany we fed 2,000 people with maize, rice and beans. We were able to provide basic medical supplies to fight the Pandemic. More good news is that in some communities we are able to continue working on our projects: re-roofing an asbestos covered school, building water storage tanks for the community of San Jose, establishing vegetable plots for needy families and starting to build our 3rd Casa De Salud (Health Clinic). We are continuing to feed 50 children twice a day and employ Dr. Edwin Rojas to look after patients.

WO R K S H O P

S H OW R O O M

Because of your generosity we are able to pay fees for Mayan children’s secondary school and third level vocational training. This prepares the native people for jobs and helps break the cycle of poverty. If you would like to donate contact www.hopeguatamala.org

Bay Leaf it or Bay Leaf it Not! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

The ancient Greeks were stone mad for them, the Romans wore them on their heads, Emperor Tiberius wore a hat made from them (to protect him from lightening), poets stuck them under their pillows for inspiration and witches and wizards lauded them for their narcotic effect which spelled a special kind of magic! Looking through the historical data, this ordinary herb extraordinarily sorted the ills and woes of populations all over the World! Bay Leaf has had many claims attributed to it down through the ages – some of which are valid, others not so much – but all make for some welcome distraction from Covid, Brexit and the “new abnormal”! The woody shrub, Laurus Nobilis, bay laurel tree or bay leaf tree, originated in the Mediterranean region but soon was cultivated in South Asia, South America, Australia and Europe. It thrives in hot, sunny climates with moisture from the sea but is often seen in Irish gardens too. It is most famed for its flavour, medicinal and ceremonial use as well as hair lotions and manly potions. The leaves, bark and essential oils extracted from the leaves give us the familiar bay leaf aroma and it is these parts of the bay tree that have undergone the most scrutiny in scientific terms although the tree also bears flowers and fruits -these don’t feature quite as much. We are familiar seeing a wreath of bay leaves (laurels) donned by the victorious in many modern sports harping back to a time when wearing a laurel wreath was prestigious and well-respected. The term “laureate” is attributed to those who have achieved high esteem or award for their work – Nobel prize winners and poet laureates are good examples of how the simple bay leaf has in itself earned high regard throughout the ages right up to today. In traditional (folk) medicine it has been widely used to treat migraines, earache, rheumatism, sprains, earaches, and to enhance perspiration (not quite sure what this really means!). It also was used for digestive issues, stomach ache, colic, vomiting, diarrhoea and indigestion. There are also reports that bay leaf tea relieved coughs, colds, influenza, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. Poultices of bay applied to the skin were used to treat pain and neuralgia. Resting on one’s “laurels” probably was a well spent past-time by all accounts. Today, many of the old remedies, have been examined for efficacy, safety and toxicology among other parameters that deem them a “medicine” by modern standards. Remarkably, bay leaf has a chemistry profile that would knock the socks off some of our most advanced drugs. Bay leaf has many biologic activities such as wound healing activity, antioxidant activity, antibacterial activity, antiviral activity, immunostimulant activity, anticholinergic activity (cholesterol-lowering), antifungal activity, insect repellent activity, anticonvulsant activity, antimutagenic activity, and analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. a tonne of bay leaves, much more work has to be done by our scientists but so far, there is plenty good reason to include bay leaves in your kitchen herb and spice collection. Have you ever noticed that once we are told that something is good for us, we automatically assume that more is better? Not this time! The best way to enjoy bay leaves is a few, regularly rather than a whole bunch of them just once. Bay leaves are indigestible and have a tough fibrous stem and sharp, pointy leaves – they should never be consumed whole. Injury to the mouth, oesophagus and intestinal linings have been known to happen. However, do not let that put you off adding whole bay leaves to slow-cooking dishes and remove before serving. The flavour imparted by the leaves in cooking consists of the beneficial oils and nutrients. Similarly, you can make tea from whole leaves by simmering 4 or 5 leaves per cup of water for 10 minutes, leave to rest, covered with a lid for a little while – strain the liquid before drinking. You could also add whole cloves and cinnamon stick to the simmering tea for even more potency especially now as we enter the season of coughs, colds and flu. Sweeten with honey and serve with plenty slices of lemon or oranges for some Vitamin C! Some of the more “out there” uses for bay leaves came from Witchipedia, a fabulous online resource for all things magic! As the darker evenings draw near and social distancing keeps us afar, conjuring up some magic at home might become the new going out! One way of manifesting some good fortune is to write your wish on a bay leaf and burn it under the full moon. Bay leaf is handy too if you want to hold on to your lover – simply go to a bay tree and pick a leaf together, tear it in half and each keep one half. Guaranteed that you will see your lover again, and neither of you will be tempted by infidelity. Ironically, as I write this piece, I just heard the pubs will re-open again on the 21st September – enough time to stock up on the bay leaves, for whatever reason suits you best! Pátrún na Min Airde Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Beannachtaí bisiúla ó Thobar Eoin Baiste na Min Airde chugat, a léitheoir. Éiríonn an t-alt so as mo ghealadh is mo thaithí ar thraidisiúin an Tobair úd. Tá Tobar Eoin Baiste suite cúpla céad slat taobh thiar de Chaisleán na Min Airde in aice láthair seanatheampaill meánaoiseach Cill Mhuire, agus turas an tobair á thabhairt ann leis na cianta. Más buan mo chuimhne, thugas mo chéad turas tobair ann i dtús sheachtóidí na h-aoise seo chaite i dteannta m’athar críonna Joe ‘Curney’ Ó Súilleabháin (1892-1977) Garraí na dTor. Bhí cosán corrach siar ’on Tobar ón mbóthar an uair úd, ach a bhuíochas do Mheitheal na Min Airde agus a gcairde, tá conair réidh ann ó 1998 i leith. Maitiú Ó Grífín is a Chlann, bail orthu, a chóiríonn abhanntrach an Tobair ó bhliain go bliain ó shin. Pátrún na Min Airde 2020 Ceiliúrann ‘pobal an dá pharóiste’ – Min Aird is Lios Póil – Lá Pátrún na Min Airde leis na cianta cairbreacha, agus b’amhlaidh ar an Satharn 29 Lúnasa i mbliana againn é, ach gan aifreann á cheiliúradh cois tobair (mar a bhíodh le breis is scór bliain) de bharr an choróinvéarais. D’fhág san turas an tobair á thabhairt i mbliana mar a thugtaí i bhfad siar é beagbheann ar shearmanas eaglasta. Is iomaí slí chun an turas so a thabhairt – siúl deiseal timpeall an tobair, ag rá na Corónach Mhuire lena linn, agus deoch d’uisce an tobair mar íocshláinte chlabhsúir, a deintear coitianta. Luaitear leigheas leis an dtobar do thinneas cinn go speisialta, ach deirtear ‘go ndeineann an turas seo maitheas do gach aoinne, is cuma cad é an aicíd nó máchail atá air’ agus is fíor sin! Tá nós ag tobaraigh áirithe le blianta beaga anuas (nach nós áitiúil é) deidimíní a chrochadh ar chrann cois tobair d’iasma a dtrioblóidí is dóigh, a thugann faoiseamh, ní foláir, ach, a fhágann cuma neafaiseach ar thimpeallacht theann an tobair, dar liom! Thughas fhéin mo thuras tobair le clapsholas lae i mbliana is é ina uain mheala, lapadáil chaoin na dtonn le clos ón gcladach, agus an nasc idir an saol seo is an saol eile le brath san aer ann. Pátrún na Min Airde anallód [in olden times] De réir na tuairisce ar Thobar Eoin Baiste ó Bhailiúchán Scoil na Min Airde (1937-8) a foilsíodh in eisiúint 288 de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo, lch 26, luaitear ‘tugaid an cúrsa naoi n-uaire’. Ar an nóta úd, casadh Clann Uí Dhufaigh cois tobair orm ar an Satharn agus deir Diarmuid (9) liom go ndúirt Marie Uí Ghrífín a mhúinteoir scoile leo: ‘Tosnaigh le Comhartha na Croise, siúil timpeall naoi n-uaire, agus abair Ár nAthair, ’Sé do Bheatha Mhuire agus Glóir don Athair ag dul timpeall.’ Dála an scéil, luaitear beirt bhan sa tuairisc úd ar an eachtra cois tobair i mbailiúchán Scoil na Min Airde – Máire Thaidhg (Bn. Uí Shúilleabháin agus Máire Ní Churráin (Bn. Uí Bhrosnacháin). Sinsin-seanmháthair dom ó thaobh mo mháthar í Máire Thaidhg (pósta le John O’Sullivan) go 10 West Kerry Live

raibh siopa beag aici ar an Min Aird Thiar de réir traidisiúin sarar cheannaíodar an fheirm agus an tabhairne i nGarraí na dTor c.1880, agus muintir Shúilleabháin ann ó shin (buíochas do Mhiriam Ní Shúilleabháin as an eolas seo). Deir Joe Ó Brosnacháin liom go raibh cnocán fothraigh tí Mháire Thaidhg le feiscint sa bhfaiche i Min Aird Thiar le linn a óige. Bí Máire Ní Churráin pósta le duine de na ‘Pads’ ar an mbaile fearainn céanna agus iad gaolmhar leis an aisteoir clúiteach Gregory Peck (1916-2003) – Catherine Ashe ón Min Aird a sheanmháthair siúd ó thaobh na máthar. 2. Seo a leanas tuairisc ar Phátrún na Min Airde ó thaifeadadh a dheineas i Márta 1999 le Lís Ní Shúilleabháin (1923-2009) ón Min Aird Bhuí, mar atá le clos ar Rian 22 den dlúthdhiosca Téanam go Min Aird.* ‘Ó, lá mór ab ea lá an Phátrúin’ LÍS: Ó, lá mór ab ea lá an Phátrúin. Now, níorbh saoire eaglasta é, ach lá saoire ab ea é do phobal – fé mar a deiridís san am sin – pobal an dá pharóiste mar tá a fhios agat do pósadh an dá pharóiste, agus paróiste Lios Póil anois a thugaimid air go léir. Ach san am san, na seandaoine – do bhídís ag caint i gcónaí mar – ‘pobal an dá pharóiste.’ Bhuel, do théadh pobal an dá pharóiste go dtí an Aifreann. Bhí uachtarlann i Lios Póil san am. Ní raibh na bairillí móra seo a bhailíonn é uair sa tseachtain ag teacht timpeall in aon chor ach do bheadh capaill is cairteacha, agus ceaintíní. Bhuel, raghadh na fir go dtí an uachtarlann agus théidís ana-luath, ar a cúig a chlog ar maidin, sé a chlog ar maidin, bheifeá id shuí ar a cúig. Agus d’fhágfá do chapall is do chairt ansan agus raghfá isteach go dtí an Aifreann; agus do bheadh an séipéal lán agus na daoine ón gceann eile – don dtaobh thuaidh – do raghaidís abhaile agus do dheinidís lá oibre.

Sheoirse Íbhín – an áit a bhfuil Seán Ó Conchúir anois – bhíodh sé sin mar seomra na gcótaí ach gur seálacha a bhíodh sáite isteach sna ráilleacha sa staighre. Farming News Louis Murchan BOVINE TB HERD HISTORY RISK STATEMENT AND REPORT The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will provide personalised Herd Test History Statements and Reports to cattle farmers in the coming days, to help them to reduce the risk of Bovine TB in their herds. The Bovine TB Forum Interim Report identified the need to provide more effective information to farmers to help them reduce the risk of TB in their herd and advocated for the development of herd risk categories that are “simple, clear, and convey sufficient information to enable farmers to make the decisions appropriate to their situation”. Against this background the Department has developed individualised reports that provide a simplified TB herd risk category for farmers, with herd-specific advice on how to reduce risk of TB. Farmers are already provided with information in relation to their TB risk, but this new report presents this in a very much more user friendly, detailed and practical form. The objective of these measures is to provide farmers with new tools to reduce their own risk, and to target additional Departmental resources at in a way that will have a real impact on the incidence of a disease that results in the imposition of significant cost on every livestock farmer in the country. According to the Department of Agriculture, following many successful years of reducing bovine TB levels to the benefit of Irish farmers, there has been a concerning incremental increase in the disease since 2016. This has continued in 2020 with further increases in herd incidence and reactor numbers observed. Herd incidence (on a 12-month rolling basis) has breached 4% for the first time since 2012 and reactor numbers have exceeded 20,000 – the highest number since 2009. These trends highlight the need for urgent action to manage the risk more effectively. AUTUMN SLURRY APPLICATION APPROACHES Farmers have been urged not to delay spreading the remainder of their slurry this autumn. The nitrogen (N) in slurry spread in September can have a higher impact on grass growth. As grass growth reduces from September onwards the capacity to take up N reduces steadily, the agricultural authority notes. Any N not used by grass is susceptible to leaching when autumn and winter rains come – particularly in free-draining soils. Farmers are advised to look at your grass covers and identify if your farm has a sufficient supply of grass and to apply remaining slurry as soon as possible using low emissions slurry equipment where available. They should identify paddocks that are likely to respond to additional N based on soil conditions, grass covers and soil fertility. At this point no more than 20kg of N/ha is justified. In situations where there are significant grass covers and moderate to low stocking rate, it’s likely that no chemical fertiliser is required. At this point no more than 20kg of N/ha is justified. of Ireland and was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in the EU parliament. Some of you may even remember her visit to Dingle a number of years ago to address some food discussion during the food festival. We wish her well in her new role, hope that she is treated better than her predecessor and that she has a long and successful career representing the EU, (and indeed Ireland), over the coming years. And I take this opportunity to say good bye and thank you to Big Phil. You batted well for us, here in Ireland. AG SCIENCE LEAVING CERT STUDENTS SCORE HIGH IN 2020 With the “leaving Certificate” results just out, It is hoped that the calculated grade system works as predicted. Best wishes to all who received results in the past few days, and good luck in awaited college and apprenticeship offers, and to those who are entering the workforce. Remember, you are still young, and have plenty of time to reconsider your options. If you wish to enter college, but things didn’t go quite as you had hoped, you can always •

Sit the written Leaving Cert, later in the year,

Go back and repeat it next year,

Reapply to the CAO in 2021, when points may be lower, or

• Head off working for a few years then apply to college as a mature student, with a few extra pounds in your back pocket. Of interest to the farming sector is that there was a significant increase in the percentage of top marks received by Leaving Certificate agricultural science students this year compared to in 2019. According to the CAO, of the 60,419, 7,371 students did higher level agricultural science along with 1,129 doing ordinary level. There was much excitement along with nerves for some 60,000 students who received the results of their Leaving Cert last Monday, and among their parents also. The overall number of students due to sit the examinations in 2020 was 60,419. However, due to the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, calculated grades were issued to students. Students receive grades in the format of H1 to H8 for higher level subjects and O1 to O8 for ordinary level subjects. In higher level, H1 is the highest grade that can be attained, while H8 is the lowest. In ordinary level, O1 is the highest and O8 is the lowest. 9.1% of students doing higher level agricultural science achieved a H1 this year, compared to 5% last year. 15.9% received a H2, up from 12.2% in 2019. There was also a significant decrease in those who received lower grades – 0.8% received a H8 in 2020 compared to 7.3% in 2019. 2.9% received a H7, down from 12.7% the previous year. At ordinary level, it is recorded that no students received an O1 in both 2018 and 2019; whereas in 2020, 0.8% received that grade. There was also a jump in the amount of H2s received, with 5.9% in 2020, up from 0.8% in 2019 and 0.6% in 2018.

•Good uptake of the N in slurry by the plant and avoiding losses to water from late applications;

Earlier in the summer it was revealed that the interest in third-level agriculture-related courses had dropped in 2020 compared to 2019. One of the most significant differences this year is the 5% decrease in applicants opting for a Bachelors degree in agriculture (Level 8 agricultural course as their first preference). There were 24 less applicants in 2020, bringing the figure down from 471 in 2019 to 447 in 2020.

MAIREAD MCGUINNESS TO BECOME IRELAND’S EU COMMISSIONER The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced that Mairead McGuinness will become Ireland’s new European Commissioner. Following the disgraceful treatment of our previous Commissioner, and weeks on indecision, we finally have a new commissioner. And an excellent choice. But for the circumstances in which she was appointed, it is hard to criticise the decision, and congratulations to Ursula von der Leyen for insisting on a “multiple-choice”. It’s understood Mairead McGuinness will take over the Financial services, Financial stability and Capital Markets Union portfolio. McGuinness, who has served as Vice-President of the European Parliament since 2017, was put forward by the Irish government, while Andrew McDowell – former chief economic advisor to the government from 2011 to 2016 – was also nominated. She was elected as an MEP for the north-west constituency 14 West Kerry Live

How to use Face Coverings

Coronavirus COVID-19 Public Health Advice

ALWAYS CLEAN YOUR HANDS BEFORE AND AFTER WEARING A FACE COVERING

DO NOT: Leave your chin exposed.

DO NOT: Wear it loosely with gaps on the sides.

DO NOT: Wear it so it covers just the tip of your nose.

DO NOT: Push it under your chin to rest on your neck.

FO L LOW T H E S E T I PS TO STAY SAF E : ALWAYS wash your hands before and after handling your face covering.

EnergyTríú Tips at home Ag DíolCost asSaving Costais Leibhéal

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

C: Is tuismitheoir mé go bhfuil súil ag mo mhac tosnú sa choláiste i mbliana. Deontas ComharSUSI: Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Teoranta

eolas@cccdteo.ie Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Teoranta iswww.cccdteo.com regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland

Ag brath ar do chúinsí airgeadais féin, b’fhéidir go mbeadh do mhac incháilithe chun deontas SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) a fháil. Is iad SUSI an t-aon údarás náisiúnta a chuireann deontais oideachais ar fáil. Tá Áireamhán Incháilitheachta (Eligibilty Reckoner) ar a suíomh idirlín acu ag www.susi.ie. Ní gá go mbeadh torthaí na hArdteiste faighte ag an iarrthóir fós, nó ní gá go mbeadh glacadh le haon chúrsa acu ach oiread. Is féidir leat sonraí an chúrsa atá beartaithe ag do mhac a chur isteach agus é a athrú amach anseo. Tá scála aistritheach acu agus muna bhfuil do mhac i dteideal an deontais iomlán, b’fhéidir go mbeadh sé i dteideal leath nó cuid éigin den ndeontas, ag brath ar theacht isteach an tí agus an méid leanaí atá sa tigh, agus coinníollacha eile. I mbliana, tá 43% do mhic léinn cláraithe ag tríú leibhéal ag fáilt deontas ó SUSI. Más rud é go bhfaigheann do mhac an deontas, ní bheidh oraibh an táille €3,000 a dhíol leis an gcoláiste agus díolfar liúntas éigin leis i dtreo na gcostas eile. Ná dearúd gur féidir leat an deontas SUSI a fháil díolta díreach isteach i do chuntas sa Chomhar Creidmheasa chomh maith. Tá 57% de mhic léinn cláraithe nach bhfuil i dteideal aon deontas. Gan dabht, bheimís ag moladh do thuismitheoirí airgead a shábháil thar na blianta le cur i dtreo an choláiste ach tá go leor tuismitheoirí nach n-éiríonn leo é seo a dhéanamh. Is é seo an t-am don mbliain go mbeidh formhór na gcostas le díol amach agaibh. Muna bhfaigheann tú an deontas ó SUSI, beidh an táille €3,000 le díol leis an gcoláiste agat, ach ná dearúd gur féidir é seo a dhíol i ndá leath, leis an leath eile le díol agat i Mí na Nollag. Beidh éarlais don lóistín agus leath an chíosa don mbliain le díol agat chomh maith. Is é tús na bliana acadúla an t-am is costaisí a bheidh ag do mhac le hairgead le díol amach ar chíos, leabhair agus na costaisí eile a bhaineann le bogadh isteach i lóistín nua. Iasacht Oideachais: Muna bhfuil tú i dteideal deontas oideachais agus má bhraitheann tú nach mbeidh do dhóthain airgid agat chun na costais a chlúdach, tá an rogha agat iarratas a chur isteach ar Iasacht Oideachais. Fiú má fhaigheann do mhac an deontas, b’fhéidir go mbeadh iasacht idirlinne uait agus tú ag fanacht ar SUSI an deontas a dhíol isteach i do chuntas. Baineann téarmaí agus coinníollacha leis na hiasachtaí seo ach is fiú go mór féachaint orthu. (www.cccdteo.ie/Iasacht-Oideachais) De réir an ailt a bhí san Irish Times níos luaithe i mbliana, bíonn 50% de theaghlaigh ag brath ar iasachtaí chun na costais seo a chlúdach. Therefore, we want to help people speak Irish every day, between native speakers, people who don't speak Irish too often and people with a small bit of Irish. Next year's census will ask about the use of Irish. We will be hoping to improve the number from 2016, because there was a fall in daily Irish speakers from 2011 to 2016. It will take a big effort from everyone - ní neart go cur le chéile!

An Cúinne Cruthaitheach Scéal beag a fuaireas i leabhar faoi sheana leighseanna. Blianta móra fada ó shin bhí droch aicíd nó bhreoiteacht uafásach ag dul thart agus morán Éireannaigh ag fáil bháis leis, chuir an bhean airithe seo fios ar an gclann agus a gar chlann agus bhailig sí timpeall uirthí iad agus dúirt leo éisteacht go cruinn lena raibh le rá aici leo. Bhí mias mór gairleog “garlic” ar a glúin aici agus roinn amach eatharta é agus dúirt leo smut do a chur féna dteanga ló ist-oíche nó go mbeadh an aicid thart. Ní bhuíoch a bhíodar ach thógadar a comhairle agus dheineadar amhlaidh. Fuair na mílte mílte bás leis an aicid timpeall na duithí ach duine amháin don dteaglach áirithe sin ní fuair breoite ach iad i mbarr a sláinte. B’fhéidir go bhfuil ceacht sa scéilín dúinn go léir san am dushlánach seo agus go mbainfeadh an “garlic” barra thuisle as an gCovid 19 nár bhfiú trial a bhaint as agus níl aon bhaol ná go mbeadh an Spás Soisialta i gceist mar na bheadh morán ag teacht ró ghairid dúit leis an mboladh laidir ach ba cuma san dá ndeanfadh sé an t-action. - Le Mary Nic Gearailt, Márthain 20 West Kerry Live

Maith thú to the White team on a great performance and a superb win (5-06 to 0-08).Some brilliant teamwork displayed on the night. A special thanks to the 4 girls in particular who came along and performed excellently. Milltown Castlemaine Abú! UNDER 14'S: Our under Green 14's put up a huge battle out in Rathmore on Wednesday night last and despite putting some fantastic scores-(2/14) on the board lost out at the final whistle. Hard luck but most importantly very well played. The White team were up against Legion on Wednesday last and equally served up some fantastic scores (4/07) to end up victorious after a very exciting finish- which had the supporters on the edge of their seats. Well done to you all! (Photo of White team sent ahead)

West Kerry Live 23

In his new book Thirty-two words for Field , Manchán Magan explores what the Irish language tells us about who we are. He suggests that we were once a less prudish, enlightened and body-positive lot. Terms for menstruation, for example, acknowledge different experiences and perspectives i.e. bláthscaoileadh (bloom shedding), an t-ádh dearg (the red luck) and tá brúdáin orm (I’m being crushed). Fast forward to modern day Ireland where last month the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland banned a 30 second advertisement for Tampax because it caused general offense to a grand total of 84 complainants. The fact that 83% of the complaints were made by women highlights the level of shame and stigma now associated with what is a normal bodily function for half the worlds’ population. Censoring communication in relation to periods not only adds to the embarrassment (not to mention the trauma experienced by girls as young as 9) but makes it more difficult to discuss anything menstruation related. What has this got to do with sustainability? From a social point of view, the UN recognizes that sustainable development is only possible if women’s health is prioritized and that includes menstrual health. Many menstruation related symptoms (MRS) such as menstrual migraines, disturbed sleep, or menstrual diarrhoea are not even recognised as such by many because they are rarely discussed as side effects while more serious conditions like endometriosis (a chronic inflammatory condition which can lead to pain, scar tissue and adhesions which affects between 2 and 10% women) takes an average of 9 years to diagnose in this country largely due the normalisation of period pain by sufferers and society. MRS can not only have huge effects on general physical and mental health but can also lead to reduced concentration and productivity at work and school, absenteeism and a reduced participation sporting activities (especially in teenage girls). From an environmental perspective, sanitary products are the 5th most common litter on European beaches (more widespread than single-use coffee cups so please do not flush them!). Conventional tampons, which are single use and non-recyclable, contain the equivalent amount of plastic as 5 carrier bags while pads are 90% plastic. The scale of the issue is illustrated by the fact that 4.5 billion boxes of Tampax alone (29% of the market share) were sold globally last year. 24 West Kerry Live

Before outlining options for a more sustainable period it is important to acknowledge that it is a privilege to be able to afford and access safe and hygienic sanitary products not to mention being able to consider eco-friendly alternatives. Period poverty is one of the most hidden forms of poverty and affects thousands of people across the country on a daily basis. It also contributes to period related absenteeism and reduced participation in school, work & sport. Furthermore, the objective of this article is to provide information on options that you may not be aware of and not to add another layer to the burden of shame already associated with periods.

suitable to use when swimming. They do look a bit daunting and it does take a few days to get the hang of using it properly (YouTube has hundreds of information videos) but 9 out of 10 women who try them are converts! Menstrual underwear look like regular underwear (feel like a mix between support wear and swimwear) but have inbuilt absorbing layers (which can absorb the equivalent of 4 tampons). They are cared for in the same way as reusable pads. Brands include Think, WUKA and Modibodi and one pair costs on average between €20-30. This can make the initial investment quite expensive as you would need between 7 and 10 pairs if you decided to use them as a complete replacement for conventional products. Many people choose to use them alongside conventional products or for night time use as they are so comfortable. They are an especially good practical and easy to use option for younger girls and teenagers and individuals with disabilities. They can also be used by both men and women who experience urinary incontinence. It is also worth noting that Modibodi do a range of period proof swimwear which are an option for younger girls who might not be comfortable using tampons or menstrual cups.

As well as being single use and non-recyclable, most of the conventional sanitary products on supermarket shelves are made from nonorganic cotton which contain pesticide residue and the scented products contain up to 3000 fragrance chemicals which often cause irritation and allergic reactions. Many of these chemicals are also suspected carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Disposable organic sanitary products such as those produced Natracare (probably the best known of the brands available in Ireland, sold in health food shops but starting to show up in larger supermarkets) are plastic, perfume and chlorine free and are all biodegradable (compostable). They are also sold at a similar price point to conventional products (approx. €2.30 for 10 tampons; approx. €2.80 for 12 pads). Many similar products from new start-up companies with high ethical standards (climate positive; organic etc.) can be found online. One such company (Dame) also sells a self-sanitising reusable applicator which would eliminate another major source of sanitary product waste.

Finally, a recent survey by Plan Ireland showing that 61% of girls are too embarrassed to talk about their periods illustrates that there is a long way to go in terms of education and eliminating taboos. On a more positive note there is an ever increasing number of fantastic advocates for women’s health both online (e.g. @evidentiallyyou, @iamsarahsproule, @ tarastewartdj and @thisperiodinmylife) and in print (e.g. Dr. Mary Ryan, Saskia Boujo & Dr. Jen Gunter) whose aim it is to educate and inform. Modern technology in the form of tracker apps, also have the potential to help improve women’s health. Logging symptoms on these apps can identify patterns which allow for better management of side effects. It goes without saying you should speak to a healthcare professional for any issues that cause concern.

Reusable cloth sanitary pads are also available in health food shops and online eco-shops. These are usually made using two to three thin layers of organic cotton or bamboo and a thin layer of laminated polyester to make them leak proof. If cared for properly (rinsed out in cold water after use and then washed according to manufacturer’s instructions) most cloth pads are estimated to last for an average of 5 years so they should work out significantly cheaper than conventional products in the long run (3 pack of ImseVimse reusable pads retail approx. €18). Small Changes: An t-Ádh Dearg

The menstrual cup was invented in the 1930s but is only beginning to receive mainstream acceptance in the past few years with now almost 200 brands to choose from (Mooncup, Organicup, Rubycup and DivaCup are some of the better known brands in Ireland). Made out of medical grade rubber or silicone they last on average for 5 years so there is huge cost savings to be made (most cups cost between 20 and 30 euro, also available in your local health food shop). They usually come in two sizes based on your age and/or if you have given birth but a few brands such as the DivaCup and Organicup have a smaller size especially for teenagers. Depending on the brand they only need to be emptied every 8 and 12 hours, they do not leak, are non-irritant and

The GGC minors played Templenoe/Sneem/Derrynane in Cromane last Sunday afternoon. It was a fantastic game of football played between two attack-minded sides. In the end, GGC just came out on top thanks to goals from under-16 players Jason O’Connor and Charlie Foley. GGC led by 0-11 to 1-6 at the break thanks to a glut of scores from Sean Quirke and Darragh McKeefry. The second half was a very even game constantly ebbing and flowing. The visitors went ahead early in the second half, 0-12 to 2-7, but GGC steadied to end the game with a onepoint win. Well done lads. This was the last of three scheduled games in the county league. They ended up winning two of the three. They won their first game against Dromid-Waterville but came up short in their second outing a fortnight ago against Renard-St Mary’s. Scorers: Charlie Foley 1-3, Sean Quirke and Darragh McKeefry 0-4 each, Jason O’Connor 1-1, Rian O’Donovan 0-3, Eanna Healy 0-2. The main aim of the plan is to preserve and encourage the use of the Irish Language as a living language in our town and help with the promotion of Dingle as a Gaeltacht Service town. There is no doubt that Dingle Peninsula would not be such a popular tourist destination but for the area being identified as such a strong Irish speaking tradition. Under this special fund Kerry County Council have been granted the sum of €130,000 to widen the foothpath along the Quay/Strand Street area. The original idea of the fund is to promote, encourage and facilitate the access to towns and villages for pedestrians and cyclists. Some local opposition has been voiced to this plan as to widen the foothpaths will make it narrower and more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians already have footpaths on both sides of the street. Perhaps a compromise might be to demolish the old defunct Ice Plant and widen the road there instead.

ROAD SAFETY. Several of our readers have asked me to appeal to all road users to exercise more care when using our national routes and indeed all roads and public lanes and bye roads. Pedestrians ,Cyclists and Joggers are reminded to wear high vis clothing when using public roads and have suitable lighting such as torches or indeed using mobile phone lighting to warn oncoming drivers of your presence. Drivers are also reminded to travel at moderate speeds and help avoid unnecessary danger to your fellow road users at all times of day or night. SHOP LOCAL. Just a gentle reminder to shop local and support local producers and services and keep as many people as possible in employment in the Peninsula. GREENWAYS. I had the opportunity last week to cycle the Waterford Greenway and was indeed most impressed with such a fine facility and the great Cead Mile Failte we received along the way. It certainly appears to me that Irish people are only too willing to go on activity trips and we need to promote the many such attractions in our Peninsula as the competition is increasing all the time. The South Kerry Greenway should be a great benefit to that area if and when it gets off the ground. Do we have any such plans for a Greenway in West Kerry yet??. SLÁN TAMALL!!!.

Paddy Finally Gets Booked Paddy Browne receiving his 'This Is Your Life' book from his fellow Dingle GAA Trustee's Vincent Flannery and John Foley Burnham's Paddy Browne received a wonderful presentation of a 'This Is Your Life' book containing some of his memories from a lifetime of involvement with Dingle GAA and West Kerry GAA from his fellow Dingle GAA Trustee's Vincent Flannery and John Foley at the weekend. For many a year Paddy kept everybody informed with his Dingle Notes in The Kerryman. Many a game of football he reported on and he kept us all up-to-date with all that was going on in the locality. Hopefully when things settle down we'll have an evening of reminiscing of a Lifetime of GAA and Community Service with Paddy. Go raibh maith agat as an tseirbhís iontach a thug tú dár bpobal.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland As we slip into September and Autumn, it is great to still see so many locals and visitors alike out enjoying our magnificent land and seascape – walking our beaches and hills, hiking the Dingle Way, cycling, golfing, horse-riding, swimming (yes – the water is so warm at the moment!), kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddle-boarding, sailing, diving, surfing, fishing, kitesurfing and of course, all the wonderful boat trips – eco, Fungi and tours out and around the Blasket Islands (make sure to get your visit in to the Great Blasket before the ferries finish in a few weeks’ time). Also, as we know, our attractions are fantastic experiences too with many still open for the next few months including – Dingle Oceanworld, Ionad an Bhlascaoid, Hold a Baby Lamb and Beehives, Pet and Eco Farms, heritage and archaeology sites, breweries and distillery, topped off with great food, craft and retail! With time and pace slowing down, we may get to enjoy what our visitors have been enjoying over the last few months too……. And hopefully, welcome the reopening of our pubs soon - #DinglePeninsulaMissesYou That’s the promotional piece completed but seriously, the feedback from visitors, both far and wide across Ireland, is how our businesses and communities created such a welcoming and safe holiday experience here across the peninsula, allowing so many to have a wonderful 2020 “staycation”. It is truly testament to the quality and creativity of our local businesses – fair play to everyone to date! As we have seen in recent weeks with local

lockdowns, we must remember that we are still living with Covid-19! We must still manage our social distancing which is challenging at times and we must continue to ask everyone to be mindful of our community by practicing safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wearing your face mask indoors and in queues. Also, with continued reduced capacity and space this autumn for pubs serving food, restaurants, cafes, activities, attractions and accommodation, pre-bookings and reservations are still advised in advance to avoid disappointment. Please avoid crowded areas and gatherings in the interests of your safety and well-being and the safety and wellbeing of our community. We would ask everyone to please NOT litter and bring your rubbish home with you – please Leave No Trace. Promotional Updates The Dingle Peninsula Autumn / Winter Open 4 Business brochure is underway and will promote the businesses who are open this autumn and winter season. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance / Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne will also be creating a Dingle Peninsula Special Offers page or the Big E Virtual Market in West Springfield, Western Mass. Please contact Sam ASAP at dinglept@gmail.com to be included - https://www. dinglepeninsula.net/open4business/mobile/ index.html Funding Supports Update To follow are some important funding updates to be aware of so that you can start applying for – please note key dates and allow plenty of time for applications: • Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) -

EWSS is an economy-wide enterprise support that focuses primarily on business eligibility. The scheme provides a flat-rate subsidy to qualifying employers based on the numbers of eligible employees on the employer’s payroll and gross pay to employees. The EWSS replaced the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) from 1 September 2020. It is expected to continue until 31 March 2021. • Budget 2020 – Chambers Ireland have been running a series of surveys over the last few months to assess the impact that Covid-19 is having on businesses. Dingle Chamber and Tralee Chamber Alliance are working with Chambers Ireland on lobbying for business supports in this year's Budget. They need your input once again and so have created a new survey: https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/CI_KerrySurvey It looks at issues such as Revenue, HR problems, Invoices, Debts, and the challenges of reopening so please take a little time it complete – it will only take about 5 minutes to do so. • Covid-19 Credit Guarantee Scheme - Announced as part of the Government’s suite of supports for businesses that have been negatively impacted as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 in Ireland, the COVID-19 Credit Guarantee Scheme will facilitate up to €2 billion in lending to eligible businesses. The Scheme offers a partial Government guarantee (80%) to participating finance providers against losses on qualifying finance agreements to eligible SMEs, small Mid-Caps and primary producers. It is designed to incentivise participating finance providers to continue to play their role in supporting the availability of additional liquidity to Irish businesses.

And it was all to celebrate the life of a former much loved resident of the site, Jim Clear from Cork on the first anniversary of his death. Jim's family were all there and were overjoyed with such a lovely and fitting tribute to Jim who loved music and drama in life. It was indeed a poignant occasion, joyous while also tinged with sadness for Jims family and many friends. May he Rest In Peace. NEW VENTURE Best of Luck to Sandy Feet Fitness on their new Gym. A new Top Class facility located in Camp offering another great service to the local community. Go néirí an t-adh libh ! OBITUARY Sr. Mary Brendan Herlihy, Holy Family Sister, Knockglossmore, Camp and Tullamore, Co. Offaly and Knock, Co. Mayo passed away peacefully at the Sonas Nursing Home, Knock on August 26th. Removal from the Marian funeral home Knock was on Thursday, August 27th, to the Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Ireland, Knock for Mass at 1 o'clock. Sr. Mary Brendan was laid to rest in Clonminch Cemetery, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The following eulogy was delivered by Rev. Fr. Gibbons of Sr. Mary Brendans life at her funeral Mass. Sr. Mary Brendan was born into a very staunch Catholic family in Camp, Co. Kerry in the year 1922. She was the eldest of 6 children and attended Camp National School where the Headmaster Jackie Murphy was noted for his educational methods, which went far beyond the standards of the time. At the age of 14 years, she encountered the Holy Family Sisters and felt attached to join them in their various missions especially in the work of education. At that time the Novitiate was in France and she made the brave and big sacrifice to leave her native home and country. She quickly mastered the French language and eventually returned to England where she trained to be a teacher. She devoted almost 40 years of her working life to teaching in schools in London and Exmouth. She was elected Provincial to the English/Irish Province, a post which she held until her retirement. She then returned to the Ireland to her Community in Tullamore. Mary spent last year in Sonas Nursing 32 West Kerry Live

Home Knock where she received great care and was very happy. Sr. Mary Brendans sister Sr. Catherine and her neighbour Sr. Eileen O Donnell (now deceased)followed in her footsteps joining the order in 1938 and Sr. Kathleen O Donnell from Slieve, Camp carries on this great tradition, continuing to work in her ministry with the Holy Family Sisters in England. These Camp women like many many other Irish Missionary nuns deserve a real debt of gratitude for their work with people in need all over our world. They are and did make a difference ! Sr. Mary Brendan is deeply regretted by her religious community, her brother Paud, sister-in-law Maeve, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Sympathy is extended to all. The news of the death of Eileen Keane (nee Bruton), Aughacasla and Green Acres Caravan Site on Monday, 31st August was received with sadness. Eileen was a lovely lady, we all have great memories of her, her wonderful sense of humour and fun, Polka Set Dancing in Camp School and out with the Biddy fundraising for local charities. Eileen with her husband Tom established Green Acres Caravan Park in Aughacasla in 2011, a very successful tourism venture in the area. And again she made many new friends in Green Acres, who will miss her greatly. On Wednesday morning many neighbours and friends lined the roadside outside her home in Aughacasla and again at the Church and at Killiney Graveyard where she was laid to rest following requiem Mass at St. Marys Church, Castlegregory. Eileen is survived by her husband, Tom, Son, Michael, Daughter in law, Susan, grandchildren Sarah and Michael, brother, Paul, sister, Angela, nieces, nephews, relatives, extended family and many friends to whoom sympathy is extended. Eileen, Rest In Peace. ANNASCAUL/DINGLE GIRLS FOOTBALL It has been a busy few weeks for the Annascaul/Camp girls who combined with Dingle to play at u 14, u16 and Minor level for this short but hectic season. The girls from both clubs have shown great commitment to make the games and training and thanks also to the parents who have brought them to the games. The club would also like to thank the Coaches and mentors from the Dingle club who have been fantastic to work with again this year. U 14s, The u 14s are having a great run in the County League, notching up some impressive victories and have reached the final against Currow. They have played Currow twice in the League already and there has only been a kick of a ball between them on both occasions so it should be an exciting final. U 14 Squad : Beibhinn Sheehy, Molly Greaney, Sarah Casey, Ellie Hoare, Mae Griffin, Orlaith Murphy, Leah O'Connor, Orlaith Clifford, Grainne O'Dwyer, Roise Deane, Saoirse Mehigan, Líle Garvey, Hannah Granville, Norah O Driscoll, Ciara Kennedy, Megan Brosnan, Ellie Fitzgerald, Hayley Flaherty, Robin Quinlivan, Ciara Slattery, Ciara Casey and Sinead Murphy. Mentors Jim Garvey, Noreen Flaherty, Mairead Clifford Conor Slattery U 16s. The U 16s rounded off their County League campaign with a game against Kilcummin in Camp last week.

The club would like to thank Camp Community Council for facilitating the game. Killcummin were excellent on the night and deserved their victory but our girls settled into the game after a tough start and battled hard to the end. The girls have shown great commitment through the season. Minors : The minors finished off the league campaign with a draw in a thrilling game with Beale/ Ballyduff in Dingle last Friday and now progress to the County Semi Final. It wasn't looking good at half time when we trailed by 5 points to 1. However a super comeback in the second half, including a wonder goal by Emily O Regan, saw our girls get back into the game. A superb Ella Sheehy point saw us go into the lead but Beale/Ballyduff came back to level it. Spicy Beef & Chorizo Stew Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

some lemon zest and parsley before serving to freshen it slightly. This can be made in a slow cooker too.

Heat a large casserole pot, once hot add a little oil and then the meat (you may have to do this in stages if the casserole pot is small).

Ingredients 1 kg beef dice, from the shin

Cook this over high heat for a few minutes until it has browned all over. Once browned, remove the meat and wipe the pot with some kitchen paper. Put the pot on over a medium, add a little oil and the onion. Cook for a few minutes and stir every now and then. After a few minutes add the garlic and pepper, cook for another few minutes until it the vegetables have softened.

1tbsp.flour (optional) 1 large onion, finely diced 3 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 red peppers, seeded and finely chopped 250g cooking chorizo, cut into chunks

This time of year, should excite everyone who loves to cook, the evenings getting longer, plenty of vegetables in season and it is the perfect time for comforting and hearty food. At the cookery school we always focus on the techniques of cooking. We believe that if you understand them well you can cook anything. The basics of a stew always remain the same, this one just happens to have beef, chorizo and a few spices. So, for a dark stew, brown the meat, add the vegetables, add enough liquid to cover everything and cook for a few hours until it is tender. Even though it is going to be cooking for a few hours, try to spend the first 20 minutes giving it plenty of attention, this is where you really make the difference. I always love to season any rich hearty stew with

Turn up the heat a little and add the chorizo. Cook again for a few minutes and stir every now and then. Add the spices and tomato puree, then add in the beef stock to cover everything. Season with salt and pepper.

1 tbsp. smoked paprika 1tsp. cumin 1 tbsp. tomato puree 500ml beef stock

Bring this to a simmer, and put the lid on it and place in the oven. Leave in the oven for 2 hours.

1 tin of chopped tomatoes

Remove from the oven and add in the chickpeas and tomato, stir this and put the lid back on and put it back in the oven for at least another hour.

1 tin of chickpeas, bunch of parsley salt and pepper 1 lemon zested

Once it is all ready, add the parsley and season with salt, pepper and lemon zest.

Peter Cox ‘The Skelligs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere in the world. This book is the result of nearly ten years photography, and the final pieces of it came together when I realized a long-held ambition to photograph Skellig Michael at night. I also made images from the South Peak, the highest point on the island, and a very difficult spot to reach. A seemingly inaccessible pinnacle of jagged rock, the South Peak is also the pinnacle of the Skellig experience. The climb to it is dizzying, but not nearly as much as the experience of photographing from that knife-edge summit. Other Skelligs books have been published, but there aren’t that many dedicated photography books. I’ve never personally felt that they have fully captured the essence of these islands, nor matched the sense of awe that I feel when I’m there myself. The images in this book were captured from boats, aircraft and from Skellig Michael itself. I’ve been fortunate enough to overnight on the island. This is something very few people have done, and it enabled me to make photographs in light that no tourist ever sees.’ - Peter Cox An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Castlegregory Notes Unfortunately due to new corona virus regulations Tuesday night’s Bingo has been cancelled for the moment. Natterjack Toad Colouring Competition: Maharees Conservation Association in conjunction with the Local Authority Waters Programme is celebrating Heritage Week 2020 by launching a colouring competition with great prizes to be had. Information sheets available at the Office in Castlegregory. Also check out www.mahareesconservation.com and their facebook page. Recycling: Please note the blue bins for recycling will be left out every Thursday morning. Bags for recycling are available in the Office. €3 per bag. Face Coverings: Thank you each and everyone, local and visiting, for observing the requirement to wear face coverings. These are available in Spar, the Beach Box and the Village Pharmacy in Castlegregory and include beautiful, locally made ones. We would like to remind everyone to continue wearing them and not to become complacent as time goes by. If you aren’t in the habit of wearing your face mask, now’s a great time to start. It is good that the Covid 19 figures in Kerry are relatively low. Let’s do our part to keep it that way by complying with the practices advised by the health and safety authorities. Stay safe and many thanks for taking good care in the community! Tidy Towns will commence work again soon with all of the relevent restrictions in place. Help will be needed for a sustainable nature project at Coolroe. Watch this space for further details. Castlegregory Information Office Opening Hours during September (Staff Hols): Monday: 10am – 3pm; Tuesday: 10am – 3pm; Wednesday: Closed; Thursday: 10am – 3pm; Friday: 10am – 2.30pm Physical distancing protocol is in place (access for one customer only at any time. Thursday, 24th September 2020, is the date for our annual Coffee Morning. Due to Covid 19 it will be more difficult this year - the priority is the safety of everyone and it is very important to adhere to social distancing and to the HSE regulations. Obviously we will not be able to hold our Coffee Mornings like we used to but rather than abandon the idea completely we are wondering if people could partake in a virtual coffee morning. We are so very grateful for all the support that we have received from the whole county over the last thirty years. This, however, is one year where we cannot thank you in person, over a cup of coffee, for all the help you have given us. But, we would be delighted if, on 24th September, or any other day, you can raise your cup to yourselves and consider the enormous effort and goodwill that has helped build both an inpatient and outpatient unit, supporting thousands of patients and their families. Kerry Hospice Foundation has been a community organisation all the way, run and supported by ourselves. We are not finished - there is still work to be done. There will always be a demand for palliative care. It is our job to ensure there will always be resources to provide the best possible professional service. So join us on our virtual coffee morning, whether by Zoom, WhatsApp or simply sitting in your own kitchen enjoying your own company. Salute yourselves for all the contributions you have made. We too will be saluting you and your loyal support to this great self-help journey. Remember Ted Moynihan's wish 'You may never need the Hospice, but the Hospice will always need you'. We have Coffee Packs available, sponsored as always by Bewleys, should you wish to avail of them. Contact for West Kerry : Ursula O'Connell, 087 7450 126

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Comhghairdeachas le Rang 2020! Ó Choláiste Íde, Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne agus Mheánscoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, bhí bliain dhúshlánach agaibh ach is mór an rud é teacht go dtí an phointe seo - maith sibh! Congratulations Class of 2020! It’s been such a challenging year for you all and this week brings important milestones. Well done for reaching this point. We hope the path you choose leads you to achieving your potential and we have no doubt that the resilience you have developed this year will serve you well. We’d love to stay connected with you all - you are the people who may want to build your future careers and businesses from the Dingle Peninsula. You can register for our Youth Community (see links on advert in this issue) or follow us on social media to stay up to date with events, projects and opportunities. Go n-éirí an bóthar libh go léir agus fanaigí i dteagmháil linn! On Culture Night on 18th September 2020, we’re delighted to be hosting a performance by two local artists Silke Michels and Maggie Breen. The performance, which will be live-streamed from our office, explores freedom and isolation in a two metre square. Can freedom be found within these boundaries? This multi-disciplinary piece is part of ongoing work exploring our connections to closeness, our experiences of distancing and looks at what isolation means

and how it affects us. The work is grounded in the personal experiences of the artists and captures how they each navigate these elements through movement and spoken word in their native languages - Irish, German and English. Léiriú a dhéanann iniúchadh ar saoire agus ar uaigneas i limistéir cearnóige dhá mhéadar cearnach. An féidir saoirse a bhraistint istigh sna teorainneacha seo? Is mar chuid d’oibre leanúnach é an píosa seo, a dhéanann iniúchadh ar ár nasc do chóngaracht, ár dtaithí ar a bheith scartha ó dhaoine, chomh maith le iargúltacht agus conas a théann sé i bhfeidhm orainn. Tá tionchar mór ag taithí pearsanta na n-ealaíontóirí; taispeánann an obair seo conas a dhéanann siad a mbealach tríd trí mheáin gluaiseachta agus focail i dteangacha dúchasacha na n-ealaíontóirí - Gaolainn, Gearmáinis, Béarla. Time: 5pm - 5.30pm Genre: Performance Art/Movement/Spoken Word Website: More info & Live streaming link via www. dinglehub.com In connection to the above performance, which has moved to live streaming instead of inperson performance, we are very aware of how the current situation has massively impacted musicians and artists. We are all looking at new ways to connect with the world and as such we’d love to hear from people in the creative sphere based on the Dingle Peninsula who may wish to use our boardroom/artists’ space/ online workshop room to live stream, facilitate online workshops, etc. and avail of our 1Gb eir high-speed fibre broadband connection. We are

open to collaborations and to support funding applications, ideas, etc. You can best reach us by email info@dinglehub.com or by phone 0669150140. Have you recently started working from here? Are you considering a part-time or permanent move to the Dingle Peninsula? Are you selfemployed, remote working or a start-up business? Perhaps you are in a position within your business to bring remote working opportunities with you and build a team from here? We want to hear from you!! Please connect with us at info@dinglehub. com and help us build a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community and network. It’s not necessary to need a physical desk or office space in the hub to be part of this wider community. We’d also love you to connect with us on social media platforms - Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook. Anyone who wishes to use the facilities can book hot desk or conference room options online at www.dinglehub.com or contact info@ dinglehub.com to arrange longer term options. The conference room can accommodate up to 3 people while maintaining social distancing and it is important to note that access to the Dingle Hub will be by prior appointment only for the duration of Covid-19 restrictions.
