Am Spraoi - Dingle Playground Great news for the children of Dingle and beyond. Am Spraoi, set up in July 2011 was last week awarded €184,000 under the CLÁR programme to build a playground in Dingle. This large grant aid combined with over 5 years of local fundraising will fully finance the project. Kerry County Council has been involved from the outset and has helped the Am Spraoi voluntary committee every step of the way. The site of the playground which is owned by KCC is situated behind The Charthouse Restaurant at the entrance to the town. Upon completion, which is hoped to be early Summer 2017, KCC will both maintain and insure the playground.

16 &

Fundraising Am Spraoi has been fundraising steadily since 2011 and has raised in the region of €30,000 thanks to the generosity and support of the whole community. Many businesses donated sizeable sums following a door to door collection. Both West Kerry Live and The Kerryman were always more than supportive advertising events and following the progress of the playground. The following fund raisers took place and Am Spraoi are ever grateful to each and every one for their generosity: Fashion Show, Bingo Nights, Quiz Nights, Various Raffles and Street Collections, Christmas market stalls, Cake sales, Collection Bottles in businesses around Dingle, Bikathon donations, Triathlon donations, Women's Mini Marathon donations, South Pole Talk donations, Marathon donations, Wren Boys donations, Dingle Food Festival stalls. Is mian le Coiste Am Spraoi buíochas ó chroí a ghábháil le gach éinne agus le gach gnó a thug cabhair agus tacaíocht dúinn ó 2011 amach.

Killorglin Christmas Hamper Ride The Killorglin Cycling Club’s annual Christmas Hamper Ride takes place this Sunday, December 11th starting at 10am at the Sports Complex. Sign on opens at 8.45am for one of the most popular annual pre-Christmas ride-outs with a fee of e15 for Cycling Ireland licence holders and e17 for non- members. The Event: Riders have the choice of a 50km or 75km route both of which are ridden at a controlled speed until the pace pulls away and dash for home begins. The first three riders home over the longer distance and the first rider from the shorter distance will take home hampers. However there are plenty of prizes left to be shared out by raffle between the rest of the riders! This will take place in the Killorglin Community Centre where refreshments, hot food and showers will also be provided after the ride. The Route: The 50km route takes the riders on a relatively flat loop from Killorglin through Killarney, Farranfore, Firies, Miltown and back to Killorglin and is also suitable for u16 who are not allowed on the longer route. That route sees the riders continue through Farranfore towards Tralee and they will turn off at Farmers Bridge for the climb to the Killorglin / Tralee road where they will be let race back to the starting point. Alan Jones from the hosting Killorglin Cycling Club said that the Hamper Ride has grown more popular by the year. “The format suits everyone as it is largely a fun event but also allows the more competitive riders a good lung opener. The event attracts cyclists from all over the county and beyond and its timing makes it one of the most sociable days on the cycling calendar. The Killorglin Cycling club looks forward to welcoming all types of cyclists this Sunday to really kick off the Christmas festivities”.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The feature at the Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 13th December will be the winner of the Grand Jury Prize

at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival, “Nocturnal Animals”. Starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal as a divorced couple the film tells the story of a successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner’s idyllic life which is marred by the constant traveling of her handsome second husband. While he is away, she is shaken by the arrival of a manuscript written by her first husband, who she has not seen in years. The manuscript tells the story of a teacher who finds a trip with his family turning into a nightmare. As Susan reads the book, it forces her to examine her past and confront some dark truths. Great Gift Ideas Castlegregory ICA News Mention the ICA and automatically you can see the shy smirk and the soft nudge as the listeners concoct an image of “old dears’ sitting around a table knitting drinking tea and gossiping. This of course may happen but there is by far more to this wonderful women’s organisation than meets the eye. For over 100 years the Irish Countrywomen’s Association has been working on nurturing the Irish language and culture and ensuring that through practice and teaching the long tradition of heritage crafts is preserved for future generations. Using its collective knowledge and power it has influenced Irelands policies for decades and still continues to do so today. Irish society has changed a lot since the 1930’s when the ICA fought for education to be available to adults and to have safe drinking water tapped to every home in the country but the ethos of the organisation remains the same to nurture our heritage and help improve services to and the lifestyle of rural dwellers. Much is done on a local level with over 500 guilds countrywide. For many communities the ICA is their backbone organising and catering for many events. In Castlegregory we organise the annual Horticultural Show in August and again this year it proved to be a great day. Apart from the displaying of flowers vegetables and baking it gives the community a focal point where they can meet and chat over a cup of tea. This is hugely important in these times as isolation in rural Ireland is having a massive negative impact on mental health. Our guild is very aware of this and in October organised a walk on World Mental Health Day which was well attended. Two classes from the local Mean Scoil walked with us and it was a joy to see all age groups represented. Donations from the walk went to Pieta House Tralee. As a small group we get quite a lot done throughout the year. Two Mandala Weaving classes took place in October and a Needle Felting class in November. For all of these classes people outside the guild were invited and we had a very positive response. Many other requests for our help arise over the year and we are very glad to oblige. On the social front we get together several times for breakfast an outing or an informal cup of tea. There is always the opportunity to visit other guilds and many of us do so either to participate in classes they organise or walks or to socialise with them. Fashion shows always feature in the

6 West Kerry Live

yearly events and many of us have had the opportunity to try the catwalk…better late than never. Being an ICA guild member is very satisfying take this from someone who smirked and nudged also. Having an outlet and doing something for oneself is so important and the friendship and camaraderie in the guild is refreshing. Crafts are just one aspect of our guild as you can see lots of other things are happening also. New ideas are more than welcome. Just when you thought is that all!!! Let me tell you about the discounts you get as an ICA member. Many of the bigger retailers offer discounts with an ICA membership card for example, Harvey Normans, Shaws, Hickeys Home, Paco, Vibes and Scribes Cork for craft supplies and many more. Discount amounts vary but are always welcome. To conclude our yearly calendar we hold a Christmas Flower night in the Clubrooms. This year on December 12th we have the pleasure of inviting Juli Malone from Dingle to do the demonstrating. This night has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. It is a lovely social evening with mulled wine on arrival tea and homemade goodies half way and then the raffling of all the arrangements leaving us very contented going home. We are very aware that women out there are leading busy lives and juggling work and home and time is precious but we urge you to think about becoming involved in ICA. It is a non pressurised environment where you can relax and be yourself and be master of your own involvement. Have a great 2017. Nollaig shona agus bliain nua faoi mhaise dhaoibh agus go mbeirimid beo ar an am seo aris.

Spanish Meatballs (Albondigas) with a Spicy Tomato Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery This is a dish we did recently at a Tapas Supper Club at the cookery school. They always prove popular and are easy to make. The breadcrumbs soaked in milk help to bind it and will also help to keep it moist. We have added a little smoked paprika but feel free to experiment and add a little spice to it or even a small bit of chorizo to the mix. Serve these with the tomato sauce, a nice salad and some bread. Ingredients 50g fresh breadcrumbs 2 tbsp. milk 500g minced beef (or a mix of pork and beef) 1 egg yolk 3 tsp. smoked paprika ½ small onion, finely diced 1 garlic clove, crushed 60ml olive oil salt and pepper Method 10 West Kerry Live

Soak the breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes. Squeeze out excess moisture and place in a bowl with the meat, egg yolk and paprika. Meanwhile fry the onion gently for five minutes and add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes. Remove this from the pan and allow to cool. Once it has cooled add it to the bowl with the meat. Season with salt and pepper, then, using your hands, knead the mixture until smooth. Form into small balls and place on a tray. Cover and refrigerate for 10 minutes to allow to rest. Heat some oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the meatballs, turning frequently, for 4 minutes or until browned. TAMS II Payment Claims Should be Submitted Online The Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) II is a number of grant-aided measures in place since mid 2015. To date, approximately 5,000 approved applications have been made to farmers. There is a budget in place to meet these investments and the online system is also in place to ensure that payment claims received are examined and paid as quickly as possible. The Department want all farmers who have completed all work required under their application to submit their claim for payments to the online system immediately to allow for payment to issue. In addition to the over 500 payment claims received, figures available to the Department indicate that there are over 550 TAMS II claims at a draft stage on the online system. The online claim system has been open since July 2016 and the Depart-

Buy a Real Irish Christmas Tree This is an actual issue. There is nothing wrong with the open market and Globalization of our economies, but “really”, are we importing Christmas Trees? People are urged to buy a real Irish Christmas tree this year. At home we always make sure we have a real tree. It wouldn’t be the same Christmas experience without a real tree and all that goes with bringing it into the house, setting it up, the smell and the atmosphere. It is an annual event, we go to the same place every year, on 8th December, and we buy the tree. An Irish tree. And it’s as good, if not better than am imported model. And it creates employment in our community. So, come on, People, Get real. Buy an Irish tree, a local one. ITS CHRISTMAS, Ebeneezer! Around 550,000 Christmas trees are sold in Ireland each year with 350,000 sold at home and about 200,000 trees exported to the UK, France and Germany. The industry is worth €21 million to the Irish economy. This Business is seasonal, and the trees are a novelty item.. Suppliers must sell them at realistic prices, as must we support them. This business doesn’t come without its risks and none more so than the risk of Christmas tree theft. The Garda Síochána carrying out Operation Hurdle, an initiative specifically aimed at combating the theft of Christmas trees in the approach to Christmas, and need to be supported in their work. This is called Operation Hurdle has been running since 2011 and has dramatically driven down Christmas tree theft in County Wicklow. Creed Stresses Irish Brexit Priorities to UK Counterpart Andrea Leadsom The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, recently met his UK counterpart, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Andrea Leadsom MP, to discuss the implications for the agri-food and fisheries sectors of the UK’s decision to leave the EU. During these discussions both acknowledged the long tradition of trade in agri-food between the two countries, and agreed that they wanted this to continue. They discussed their respective Departments’ preparations to date, and the approaches being taken from a wholeof-Government viewpoint. They noted where the main challenges are likely to arise, including in relation to how tariff and other trade issues will be dealt with in the post-exit relationship, the practical difficulties associated with possible border controls and certification requirements, the particular challenges presented from a North-South perspective, and the complex issues that arise in relation to fisheries. The discussions were a very useful starting point in what will be a long process, but maybe it will never happen. Here’s hoping! Basic Payment Scheme Balancing Payments The next instalment of payments under the 2016 Basic Payment Scheme and Greening commenced last week, and will be on-going as we run up to Christmas. If any of you have yet to receive payment, contact your advisor, as they are not notified as to who is or is not paid. Since mid-October DAFM has issued 70% advance payments to farmers under the Basic Payment Scheme. From 1st December, balancing payments began. This will bring total payment for 2016 to €1.12bn and 121,000 farmers have received a payment to date. In addition, over 87,000 farmers have been paid a total of €188m under the Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme to date. Regular pay runs will continue to be run in December in order to process cases as quickly as possible. Young Farmers’ Scheme Payment also Commenced Some 8,600 young farmers submitted applications under the scheme in 2016. It was introduced in 2015 as a measure to support young farmers under the reformed Common Agricultural Policy. Ireland has allocated 2% of the Basic Payment Scheme national ceiling to fund the Young Farmers Scheme each year from 2015 to 2019. This is the highest percentage allowable under the relevant EU Regulations and provides funding of some €24m annually for the scheme. A qualifying young farmer receives the payment under the Young Farmers’ Scheme for a maximum period of five years dating from the year of setting up of the holding in his/her own name. Many of the 8,170 young farmers who qualified under the Young Farmers Scheme in 2015 will receive their second Young Farmer Scheme payment in 2016. Payment to successful 12 West Kerry Live

ment is urging all farmers who have completed their investments under TAMS II to submit their claim for payment to the system as soon as they are in a position to do so to. Payment claims submitted in line with all the requirements of the Scheme terms and conditions, including those related to tax clearance and the completion, where required, of a farm safety course will be processed for payment as soon as possible. Genotyping Samples and Survey Data, and Complete Carbon Navigator, to be completed In Order to Secure December Payment under Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) these issues need to be addressed immediately by participating BDGS farmers. These are suckler farmers, who are involved in the successor to the old Suckler Welfare Scheme, and should be commended for participating is this scheme, as it can be onerous, and really needs to be addr4essed by the farmer, as they are the only ones who know who did what to their cows. The Department intended to commence payments under the BDGP in December to herds who have met their 2016 requirements. These payments are apparently on target to begin in mid December. The commencement of these payments will ensure that vital funding is injected into the beef sector before the end of the year. It will also enable farmers to give a little back-hander to a certain Mr Claus, who is busy in his little workshop somewhere north of Olso. Or is it Helsinki or Stockholm, I can never remember. It’s somewhere up there! Back to the point, the BDGP is an innovative programme introduced as part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme which will benefit 24,000 Irish suckler farmers during the course of the programme’s six year term. In order to be eligible to receive payment in December all surveys in relation to animals born between 1 July 2015 and 30 June 2016 must be completed and returned to the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) by 7th December and that all genotyping test kits must be submitted to the relevant laboratories by that date also. In addition for 2016 BDGP participants must complete a carbon navigator before 30 November 2016. If you are late, don’t stick your head in the sand. Go get it done. Being late though bad, is always better than not turning up, at all. In the event that requirements have not been met within the specified timeframe, payments will continue to be made in the New Year as herds continue to satisfy scheme requirements. Farm Safety Training – TAMS II Any farmers who Applied under TAMS II for any grants will require a Safety Course, if they do not hold a Level 6 Certificate, received in the past five years. Such a course will be held in Dingle on 20th December 2016. If interested, or if you require such a course, for TAMS II eligibility, call 064-6632344 to book your place - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

National Tourism Forum Delegates that attended a major forum on the tourism industry in Killarney not only got to discuss the key issues impacting on their business but they also experienced some of the finer things in life that Kerry has to offer – such as West Kerry. Away from the debating chamber, they attended a stylish banquet at the gala black tie IHF ball, in the Muckross Park Hotel as well as a first class networking dinner in the Brehon Hotel where West Kerry GAA brothers, Darragh, Tomás and Marc Ó Sé, were interviewed about their career highs and lows. While Friday was taken up with the business of Let’s Talk Tourism forum in the Muckross Park Hotel, at which a number of high-profile delegates contributed, Saturday was a more relaxed occasion as they hit the road for a VIP day trip into the west. They travelled by coach to Dingle and they were shown the way the town has developed food and rural tourism over the last 10 years and how it is booming as a result. A Taste of Kerry lunch was hosted in Benners Hotel and food writer John McKenna was the keynote speaker and the highlight of the day for many was when they got to try their hand at pottery in Louis Mulcahy’s – with very mixed results. They also toured Dingle Distillery on the day after the launch of Dingle’s Single Malt whiskey and Joe Joyce led a group of through a talk and tasting of the malt and of the young Dingle clear spirit. John McKenna wrote afterwards: “So there we were in Dingle, listening to Joe give the funniest talk about the history of whiskey I have ever heard, sipping the Dingle Single Malt the day after its birth: I guess we were wetting the baby’s head”. Conference Chairman and SKAL Republic of Ireland President, Sean O’Driscoll, remarked: “Various sectors within the tourism industry have annual conferences to discuss the particular interests and issues involving their specific sector. However, there was no forum for the grassroots of all sectors within tourism to meet, to debate and discuss tourism.” The Muckross Park Hotel General Manager added: “Our aim was to create a forum where tourism business owners and managers on the ground could discuss the future of tourism in Ireland and network and share business learnings”.

Ted Talks: Danny Sheehy Ted Creedon This interview with writer and local historian Danny Sheehy was broadcast on Radio Kerry in October, 2005, as part of the South by Southwest series.

Rocks and Reefs, Seine boats and Seaweed

Beginish Island was a great place for seaweed. Before, during and after the Famine there were seine boats in the area and they would go from Ballyferriter and from Dún Chaoin to Beginish Island for seaweed. In 1806 there was a boat coming from Beginish and they had a cargo of seaweed. There were seven men on board and there at Ceann Sreatha or Clogher Head their boat capsized and all the men were lost. There was a lament composed at the time about that boat. Pádraig Mhuiris MacDomhnall from Baile Uachtarach was the captain of that boat. Straight out from here in Dún Chaoin there’s a place called Banc an Bhody. What that means is there was another boat here from Dún Chaoin called The Body. It was also carrying a load of seaweed from Beginish and again there were seven men on board. This was also a seine boat and in the month of March, in 1877, as they were making their way home the seas turned rough and their boat capsized out there. Five of those men were lost. I think that was more or less the end of the seine boats in this area after that tragedy. The naomhóg was coming into the area and it became very popular. That was probably the end of carrying the seaweed from Beginish. Those boats carried quite a big cargo of seaweed because the landlords at the time had a very unjust type of method. The seaweed was sold at the rate of a shilling a man. So if there were seven or eight men loading the seaweed the cost was the same in shillings but you could take as much as you wanted. It was unjust in such a way that you would always carry as much as possible and maybe too much at times. Just outside Dunmore Head there’s a rock called Lúir - it’s a huge big rock and the name

Lúir comes from the word pilúir which means a pillar and seemingly at Gibraltar the rocks were known as the Pillars of Hercules so we have the same thing here in the Blasket Sound. There was a great scholar here in Dún Chaoin and his name was Seosamh Ó Dálaigh. He was a great folklorist and he made a huge collection of folklore from this area in the 1930s. He maintained that the word ‘Lúir’ came from the word ‘pilúir’. As regards Lúir, it was a feeding ground for lambs after they took lambs from their mothers. The Maoleoin family from Comínole would take the lambs from their mothers and put them out on Lúir. That could be up to 15 lambs and looking out there you’d think it was a bare rock but it’s not. There’s about six acres of land there. It was easy enough to get the lambs onto that rock but I’d say it was an awful job collecting them and taking them off. Nowadays we have great fencing and sheep wire and all that but in those days it was a free-for-all on the mountains and very difficult to separate the lambs from their mothers. The easiest thing to do was to take them out on to Lúir where they were completely separated then.

near Coláiste Íde in Dingle harbour and his name was Joseph O’Flaherty. Anyway, they were coming through the Blasket Sound, and it must have been bad weather, and they heard a bang but continued. The ship struck something but the didn’t take in any water. They brought the ship over to Plymouth, took it out of the water and they found a big chunk of rock in the hull of the boat that stopped the water from getting in. The British were very annoyed about this and very annoyed with Flaherty and they summoned him over to England and questioned him. But he was smart enough for them and said they didn’t have this rock marked on their charts. He retained his job. Then they sent over some people and they found the rock or reef or whatever. They put it on their charts and decided to call it Stromboli Rock.

Oileáin na nÓg or the island of the Young, which is north of Beginish, has about four acres there and it was named because they separated the young lambs from their mothers and put them there. There are 36 acres on Beginish. They say great sheep and great lambs came off Beginish and Inis Mhic Uibheláin. Tomás Criomhthain has it in his writings that if you put a yearling colt out on Beginish for a year it would come off that island with a sheen that you wouldn’t see on any other horse. Beginish is a great place for sheep and for fattening lambs. There’s a smaller rock off Lúir and it’s called An Sean Duine, The Old Man. I think that the reason it was called that is because it controlled the Blasket Sound. If you want to cross that Sound, in whatever direction, you’ll look at that rock first. The Blasket islanders, when they got up in the morning they’d look out to sea and they’d look at that rock first. Seemingly they had a saying that when the Sean Duine is shaving himself he’s very cantankerous because there’s lots foam around him and you have to be very careful going to sea that day. There’s a Sound then between the Sean Duine and Lúir and it’s called Bealach An t-Sean Duine (The Old Man’s passage). There was a fisherman in Dingle, Seán Brosnan, and he told me years ago that was the safest place in the Blasket Sound. He said if you were coming down from the north and heading for Dingle and if there was a bad sea you should come through Bealach An tSean Duine because that’s the safest part. If you go further on there’s the Stromboli Rock and it has two peaks and it is always under water, by maybe two fathoms and it breaks in bad weather. The British had a coast guard vessel here known as the Stromboli and it guarded the coast of Kerry and Cork. They took on local pilots in different areas and they had a pilot on board who was from

Living the Dream – Cycle for Donal Sheila Begley ‘This is something you will never in your life forget’, - the words of a very proud West Kerry mother as she supports her son on his journey across the USA. Tomás Mac an tSaoir, a native of Ballyferriter first began cycling four years ago and is now on the final leg of his journey which will see him cross 3,000 miles from California – Florida, all in aid of charity. He has undertaken this journey all alone, both for charity and also as a tribute to a good friend of his. ‘This cycle is a personal tribute to the late John Browne who sadly passed away this summer. John was a member of the local Dingle Cycling Club, a regular training partner and a personal friend of mine’.

hour. The only record I’m going to break is cycling the slowest speed on pancake flat roads. I don’t know if I want to cry or laugh. Anyhow I’ve change my final destination and instead I’m going to bike to Penascola.’ With the journey nearing it’s end Tomás has taken the time to record the journey he and his bike, ‘Happy’ have had to date. ‘I’m so close to the finish now, it’s been one hell of a trip and the best 6 odd weeks of my life. I don’t have one bad story to tell – it’s all good stories. People have been just amazing and without them it would have been a pretty miserable bike ride.’ Tomás has raised roughly €4,000 for the Donal Walsh foundation and if anyone would like to donate they can do so at: https://www.idonate. ie/fundraiser/64358_cycling-3-000-miles-across-america-s--southerntier--in-aid-of-the-donal-walsh-live-life-foundation.html

The Gaeilge and History student graduated from NUI Galway in October, a mere few days before flying to America to embark on the trip of a lifetime which he began on October 24th, as he hoped to spread the message of the late Donal Walsh on both sides of the Atlantic. ‘I’m doing this cycle in aid of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Everyone in Kerry and further afield in Ireland is synonomous with Donal’s story before he died of cancer at the age of 16. The Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation was set up by the parents of Donal Walsh, Fionnbar and Elma. Primarily it was set up in order to promote the #livelife message that Donal spoke so passionately about before his passing. Donal said, there is help out there all you have to do is ask.’ The foundation is also aiming to help with the provision of teenage facilities in care centres. Fionnbar spoke proudly of the influence his 16 year old son has had on 22 year old Tomás. ‘You ask what I think about this man Tomás? Why has a twenty something year old done such a thing? What influence had a sixteen year old who was about to die have on the world the he lived in? We are slowly learning about the tentacles of one life influencing another. Tomás is an exceptional young man to do this adventure and we are grateful for him to do so in our son’s name. He is living a dream only Donal could have imagined and I do not think that this will be the end of his dream. I suspect that Breifne Earley will have to watch his back for the world record on cycling the planet.’ Tomás who is now within reach of his final destination, has been widely supported from both at home and abroad. This trip has been in the pipeline for a while and it came to fruition with preparations beginning a little over five months ago his proud mother Lulu Ní Chuinn has said. ‘He had been thinking about it for a year – saying he’d love to take a year off to cycle before he went to study the masters. He must have been preparing for five months at least if not more. ‘I had been nervous. The fact that he was going on his own, I was very nervous but he’s being so well looked after. He’s being treated so well by everyone single person he meets.’ The people of America have been so accomodating and helpful to Tomás as he has made his way across the states. One of those being Molly Smith Donnelly, from Phoenix in Arizona, who was only two happy to provide a bed, shower and food for him for the 2 nights. ‘My husband met Tomás in North Phoenix on his bike and rode Tomás to our house. We were concerned about Tomás riding through the city. Tomás arrived during our weekly dinner night and fit right in. He does have that Irish “gift of the gab!” Tomás has a great sense of humour, is very polite and helpful and is not at all shy. Still he’s a typical 22 year old boy but he’s doing such a brave thing’. Tomás has battled with all sorts of weather as he makes his way across the states, from thunderstorms to heavy winds. He has been battling with a very strong wind since he initially began his journey something he hadn’t been prepared for. He has made it as far as Florida struggling with the weather. ‘Florida! I made it! However it’s been an incredibly frustrating ride because of the wind. It’s really windy. I biked a mega 13km in the first 20 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richie Williams News reached us over the past week that 4 West Kerry Guesthouses have made the top 10 in the Trivago Internet Travel sites 2017 awards. Comhgairdeas to Greenmount House, Heatons Guesthouse, Emlagh House and Camp Junction House on getting the recognition they richly deserve from satisfied clients and of course once again keeping the Peninsula on the world tourism stage. Garvey’s Supervalu are also in the news being judged overall winners of the inaugural Kerryman Business Awards 2016. Well done to the management and staff on being recognised for your wonderful efforts over many years. Santa Fun Run--Yes its that time of year again and this year the newly reformed Dingle Community Games Committee will be the main organisers of the 5K Santa Fun Run to be held on Sunday December 18th starting at 2.30p. from the Marina Centre. The new committee are appealing to people of all ages to come out and support the event which will be one of the main fundraisers to get their plans in motion for 2017. I cannot think of a more worthy cause as community games caters for a wide variety of healthy sporting and cultural activities and interests for young people from tiny tots to late teens. Participants can run, jog, walk, crawl or talk over the Sli na Slainte route and a great way to build up an appetite before the festivities that follow soon afterwards. What a wonderful variety of entertainment we had last weekend with Other Voices producing such a huge programme of events at every corner of town. We are indeed most indebted to Philip King and his team for choosing to base such a huge event in our Peninsula a weekend which is now a must attend in so many music loving peoples diaries. The conduct and enthusiasm of participants and

supporters alike created a tremendous atmosphere right through the weekend and the commercial spinoff and publicity at this time of year is most welcome indeed. Míle Buíochas Philip and muintir Other Voices as an deireadh seachtaine iontach a bhí again arís i mbliana. The Feile na Soilse Lantern Parade was also a tremendous success with over 500 participants displaying lanterns of all shapes and sizes through the streets on Sunday evening last. If the sheer inventiveness of these young people is a marker for the future then there is no fear that the Peninsula and the country will be in good hands when they enter the work market in the years ahead. As usual the unique sound of the Dingle Fife And Drum Band led out the Parade and the members of the other popular local music group Walking On Cars did the honours in officially turning on the towns Christmas Tree at the Garda Station. Our sincere thanks to the members of both bands for their help and Comhgairdeas dos na leanai as an lashrann iontach a bhi le feiscint sa pharaid. The Business Chambers focus this year is very much on the Think Local And Shop Local theme with a particular emphasis on maintaining Local Employment throughout the peninsula. We appeal to everybody to leave at least some of their funds in their own locality through presents, food, drink or other requirements like coal, oil, gas etc. And Vouchers for goods or services are readily available from most outlets and in the past few years have grown to be one of the most popular presents in this country. So your choice is huge but think of protecting local employment if at all possible this year. Thank You. The Tidy Towns Committee are this week appealing for help in trying to find a vacant shed or garage or covered area for a few months to continue their work in making timber flower boxes from recycled pallets. A site in or close to town would be most suitable but any location within reasonable distance will be considered. Contact Patrick

Sheehy, Gene Courtney or Risteard Mac Liam with offers if available. Míle Buíochas. The Parking Issue in town will have to be tackled before the 2017 season kicks off and the Business Chamber would like to hear your thoughts, suggestions or ideas on same. The Christmas lights really brighten up the town and another beautiful tree stands proudly at the entrance to the Marina Centre this year. Well done to all involved in that initiative and to all the other brightly lit and decorates premises as well. It really is worth taking a few moments to look at Mary Divans window in Main Street with her traditional display. Another premises recently decorated is Staisiun na Gardai and I really like the new colour scheme which is very much in keeping with the building itself. Slan Tamall!!!

Yarrow has a long tradition as a fever herb and is a good remedy for colds especially when flu and cold like symptoms are threatening. Yarrow together with peppermint and elderflower is a particularly effective remedy for the onset of colds and flu tackling the virus and any accompanying fever. The tea should be drunk hot and frequently when symptoms arise. Yarrow taken as a tea will help to reduce the body temperature and is a safe herb for children when childhood fevers occur. Childhood illnesses such as chickenpox and measles will benefit from tea infusions of this herb as will making a strong infusion of the herb and adding to a bath to help reduce the fever. Yarrow is also a good herb to help lower blood pressure as it dilates the peripheral blood vessels and can be taken with nettle, lime blossom and hawthorn for this purpose. The herb can be used for varicose veins as it tones the blood vessels and taken with horse chestnut and circulatory herbs can help to alleviate this condition. Yarrow was known as a ‘cure all herb’ and it has a number of uses not least its ability to tone blood vessels and help to lower blood pressure. It is excellent for feverish conditions allowing the patient to release toxins through sweating and as a uterine decongestant it helps menstrual function bringing relief to those suffering from PMS. It is also a mild hepatic, diuretic and urinary antiseptic. While the herb will staunch the flow of blood it also allows the blood to circulate more freely where this is needed. The herb can be used internally and externally, for example, as a skin lotion for the complexion, for varicose veins and for haemorrhoids. The versatility of this herb is arguably unparalled in the herbal field and as a tonic herb for the venous system this herb has the potential as a ‘cure all’, so yes another herb to keep in the kitchen/medicine cupboard. TV Corner with Tommy Kennedy

DJ Dowdyman

Q. Mary, Castlemaine. Is it true I can watch my SKY channels on a second TV without paying for more than 1 box?

Celebrate your big day with Dingle's No.1 Wedding DJ !

A. Yes. Firstly, your SKY box will allow you to watch your sky channels on as many TVs as you want without paying anything extra to SKY. If you want to be able to change the channels when sitting in front of different TVs you need what’s called a magic eye connected back to the SKY box. It allows the SKY remote to send information back to the SKY box in any other part of the house to change channel, watch something you have recording, view the guide or anything you could normally do with the SKY box. However, one factor to note is that the same thing will be available to view on each TV. So this is more suited to a situation where both TVs are unlikely to be used together. For example, if your sky box is in a sitting room and you have a TV in the bedroom, then you could turn off the TV in the sitting room (or leave it on, doesn’t matter ) and continue watching SKY on the TV in the bedroom and this would not require you to pay any extra subscription saving you at least €15 per month (€180 per year) as compared to having a second box. Secondly, and it may be a little off the question, but most of the Irish and British channels on your sky box are available without paying SKY at all. You always had the option of adding a box to your existing TV but now you can buy TVs that will give you the majority of the most popular Irish and British channels without paying anyone a subscription. Some of these TVs are easy to use, some are not, some are poor quality and unlikely to last more than a couple of years, some are good quality. It is best to ask a local trusted TV dealer about this

Scéalta ón Diseart

Nique and Etáin’s father, David, had often visited Dingle and the Díseart making great friends with the Sisters and Msg. Ó Fiannachta.

Imelda Fay

Bhí stiúidio Harry Clarke ar Shráid Frederick Uachtarach, gairid do Dhánlann Hugh Lane ina bhfuil an saothar iontach dá chuid “The Eve of St. Agnes”. Tá naoi n-áit déag eile gur féidir saothar Harry Clarke a fheiscint iontu i mBaile Átha Cliath – Bewleys agus san Áras mar shampla. Is féidir a chuid oibre a fheiscint, leis, ar Inis Meáin, i Séipéal Honan agus i mórán áiteanna eile ar fud na tíre – in Ard Eaglais Brisbane, chomh maith, agus i New Jersey, Nua Eabhrach.

Naturally their appreciation was unique, inspiring, and filled with a quiet contemplative knowledge mirroring their own innate familial Clarke sense. Harry, the human being, was present for some little while again at midday in this enchanting chapel. They were looking for Harry, they said, within the windows; they were asking about whether we’d ever noticed any joking inscription he often put on his work e.g. “poor Harry”. They saw the two small panes where J.Clarke & Sons, Dublin and Clarke Dublin trademark is etched inside the glass ; they saw the motif of bare cliffs to eternal city running throughout these six twin-lancet vibrant, stained glass windows of Christ’s life; they saw the Magi’s green shoe with the spurs; the starlings at the river Jordan ; Mary Magdalene’s long free hair as she witnesses the Resurrection ; they saw the sleeping apostles and the progressive window depicting the eight Beatitudes with eight disciples, three women and five men, with headgear from the 1920’s – the era the windows were created. They saw, in fact, all at a glance and all separately ; they saw as artists’ granddaughters see – their grandfather’s hands throughout, their own genes immortalised.

Ba mhinic a thug athair na mban, David Clarke, cuairt ar an nDaingean agus ar an nDíseart. Bhí sé ana-chairdiúil le Msg Ó Fiannachta agus le Siúracha na Toirbhirte.

Their appreciation and interest also encompassed the Carrara marble Altar, the Spanish Oak pews; the Misericors; the organ gallery and the Franz Meyer stained glass around the sanctuary.

Mar is dual dóibh, ba mhór an urraim a thug an bheirt bhan seo d’fhuinneoga an Dísirt. Bhí lorg Harry féin á lorg acu orthu - iad ag ceistiú an bhfaca éinne ‘poor Harry’ scríte ar an obair? Bhíodh a leithéid scríte aige ar uairibh. Chonaiceadar an dá phána gloine le J. Clarke & Sons Dublin agus Clarke Dublin, greanta orthu. Chonaiceadar, leis, móitif fhailltreacha loma Chathair na Glóire ins na sé fhuinneog ildaite seo ar shaol Chríost – bróg ghlas an Magi agus spoir inti, druideanna ar Abha na Iordáine, gruaig fhada scaoilte Mháire Mhagdalene agus an tAiséirí á fhaire aici, na haspail ina gcodladh agus an fhuinneog leis na hocht mBeáide agus ocht ndeisceasbal- triúr ban agus cúigear fear – ceannbheart ós na fichidí orthu – an t-am a deineadh na fuinneoga. Do chonaiceadar mar a chíonn gariníonacha ealaíontóra - lámhcheardaíocht a seanathar – a ndúchas féin buanaithe go deo.

They also visited the Nano Nagle Murals and The Last Supper Fresco by artist Eleanor Yates. Passing Claire O’Halloran’s Stained glass mosaic outside the Chapel, they were intrigued at this expertise. They loved the photos of Fr. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta – one with Pope Francis and the other with the Díseart staff.

Beirt Chuairteoirí Thábhachtacha Ana-lá ab ea an Satharn 22 Deireadh Fómhair nuair a thug beirt ghariníonacha Harry Clarke ó Texas - Nique agus Etáin – cuairt orainn sa Díseart. Bhíodar i mBaile Átha Cliath toisc go raibh tigh a n-athar curtha ar an margadh acu. Ní raibh David Clarke, a n-athair, ach deich mbliana d’aois nuair a fuair Harry Clarke bás agus gan é ach daichead a dó bliain d’aois.

Bhíodar moltach ar altóir mharmair Carrara, na suíocháin, de dhair Spáinneach agus saothar Franz Meyer sa tsanctóir. Thugadar cuairt ar mhúrmhaisiú Eleanor Yates – Seomra Nano Nagle agus an Séire Deireannach. Thógadar ceann d’obair ghloine Chlaire O’Halloran lasmuigh den séipéal. Thaitin na grianghraif den Monsíneoir leo – an ceann leis an bpápa agus an ceann leis an bhfoireann. Labhair Nique agus Etáin ar fhuinneog na Genéibhe – ceann do mhórshaothair Harry Clarke gur deineadh coimisiúnú air i 1931. Níor seoladh chun na Genéibhe riamh í toisc gur dhein An Taoiseach Cosgrave cinneadh nach raibh sí ionadaíoch don Éire “nua”. Is san Miami Wolfonsian Foundation i Florida atá sí inniu.

Nique and Etáin spoke about the Geneva window which was Harry Clarke’s last great masterpiece commissioned by the League of Nations for their new building in Geneva in 1931. It never reached Geneva as Taoiseach Cosgrave of the new Irish Free State decided it was too risqué to represent the “new” Ireland. These days it is housed in the Miami Wolfsonian Foundation in Florida, USA ! Upon learning about the Family Tree Garden his granddaughters spoke about three trees in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. One is Harry Clarke’s tree, others his father Joshua's and, Keating’s. They reminded us too of their Grandmother (Harry’s wife) – Margaret Crilly Clarke, the renowned portrait artist. It was an honour to meet these vital and composed women : Nique – who is the image of Harry Clarke - and remarkable Etáin Clarke.

What a great day it was on Saturday 22nd October when two granddaughters of Harry Clarke – Nique and Etáin came to visit from Texas. They were in Dublin as they had decided after much soul searching, to put their father’s house up for sale. Their father, David Clarke, was Harry Clarke’s son and he was only 10 years old when Harry Clarke died at age 42.

Léiríodar spéis i nGáirdín Chrainn na dTeaghlach sa Díseart. Bhí trí chrann ag Harry Clarke i bPáirc an Fhionnuisce – ceann dó féin, ceann dá athair Joshua agus ceann do Kheating.

Harry Clarke’s studio was in North Frederick Street around the corner from the Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square, where “The Eve of Saint Agnes”, his spectacular stained glass window,is to be seen. There are at least 19 other places in Dublin – including Bewley’s and the Áras - where Harry Clarke’s work may be discovered. Outside of Dublin they can be seen in Inis Meán, Castletownshend, The Honan Chapel etc and abroad in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane , Australia and New Jersey, New York. 32 West Kerry Live

Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group Will Light Up Christmas Bert McCann On 17th of December at 4.30 pm Lily and Hannah Falvey will be the guests of honour who will ceremonially light up the Annascaul village Christmas tree on behalf of the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group. Donated by the Courtney Brothers the tree and the switching on will mark the start of the festive season locally. And it will also mark the mid-point of a busy year for ATTAG. Since the action group AGM, the publicly elected committee has ploughed forward, developing ideas which are aimed at embellishing the village. So, as the New Year approaches the occasion will also provide ATTAG members with an opportunity to gather with their neighbours, friends and associates and perhaps reflect on the progress made in the months gone by. No doubt some thought too will be given to making Annascaul a serious contender in the 2017 Tidy Towns competition.

man now offers a further opportunity to learn more of the history of the site. This is in addition to what can be gleaned from stones and monuments commemorating members of the German Palatine community whose descendants still live in Annascaul. And then there are those mentioned in the records, sometimes victims of shipwrecks and other calamities, and who were peacefully laid to rest here. Care for the environment has increasingly become a central consideration in the award process. At the last committee meeting two members of Transition Towns Corca Dhuibhne, Siobhán de Paor and Darach Ó Murchú, came over from the west by invitation and updated us on their work. Transition Towns are not only experienced in protecting the environment but also in how it can be utilised to enhance community life. Not short of ideas they presented some thinking on how the ecology of the village can be protected and improved and also detailed how local businesses might benefit financially by adopting constructive environmental practices. The conversation will continue and the committee will endeavour to enable TTCD to bring new ideas to the community for

A good start has been made. Every Monday evening from summer into autumn the members have been out tidying up the roadside verges and paved areas earning compliments of both holidaymakers and local folk. Thanks to Gary Percival and his generous donation of materials coupled with the labour and skills of the FÁS workers, the bridge and plant boxes by the South Pole Inn are being freshly painted. And in the last few days ATTAG volunteers carried out a clean-up operation around the bottle bank thus making a further important contribution to the visual aspect of the west of the village. The aforementioned FÁS workers have also been out clearing weeds in a pre-Christmas tidy-up. Recently, local businesses and villagers generously supported ATTAG’s fund-raising quiz night, kindly hosted by Hanafin’s Bar, raising just over €400. This effort will assist with the purchase of tools, plants and other essentials which will help further beautify the village. Another partnership which is being developed is that initiated by ATTAG with Kerry County Council officials and especially the engineer for the area. In so doing we can request information about any plans for the village and also put forward proposals for road maintenance and measures to allow safe pedestrian passage throughout the area. The committee meanwhile continues to roll out ideas. One of the aspects of village life that will also be assessed in the TT competition is support for local heritage. Accordingly, ATTAG has entered into discussions with the Rev Phyllis Jones aimed at unearthing, preserving and making accessible information associated with the Church of Ireland graveyard located in the village. The church annals are rich with references to people and communities who populated the area. Indeed, one more gravestone has recently been discovered and its inscription referring to the wife of a 19th century clergy34 West Kerry Live

public discussion. Tidy Towns judges like to see the inclusion of local schools and their students in competition entries. ATTAG therefore cherishes the environmental association that is developing with Scoil Bhreac Chluain which itself is a part of the Green-Schools Programme. Our local national school has agreed to allow its organic garden to be included in our competition prospectus and with the permission of parents, encourage the students become Junior Tidy Towns members. So do don your Santy hat and come along to the community centre, sing a few carols and cheer on Lily and Hannah, our guests of honour. When all is said and done, what the village creates now will stand for our cherished children in the future. Happy Christmas neighbours!

‘Tis The Season For Plastic Folly

participation of businesses, shops, schools, committees, communities, authorities and individuals. It will require time, effort, faith, hope and undoubtedly some charity.

Siobhan de Paor - Transition Corca Dhuibhne

In the meantime, Christmas is coming and the wild goose is getting fat on microbeads. So this is the action of the hour. We are calling on the people of Dingle to, where possible, refuse disposable plastic packaging this Christmas and stand against the excesses of season. Our provisional rubbish tracing investigations have revealed our rubbish is getting shipped to God knows where for God knows what so here so if you really care – (or if you really want to care but can't find the time) here are some suggestions:

“Ah sher, tis Christmas”, says that eejit from advertising, as he tops up your wine glass at the staff do and you’re already too-flushed, too-affectionate and too tickled by the Christmas cracker jokes but leave him off because “sher, tis Christmas.” It echoes around the dinner table when the pudding (full o' drink) lands on a gut that's already groaning under the weight of turkey and three different kinds of spuds. “That's the gratin Granny, it's French”. “Ah sher, tis Christmas,” you tell yourself, when you break your last fifty for a pair of leather gloves that your father doesn't want, need or use.

Refuse Styrofoam, bubblewrap, glossy cardboard and foil ribbons and insidiously inflated gift sets.

Instead be creative with your wrapping: Irish newspapers for

example, while they make terrible reading, make excellent gift wrap.

• Forgo the plastic toys with the plastic smile in the plastic box or the plastic appliances of convenience that make inconvenient waste a year later. •

Instead shop local this Christmas with local crafts or craft something yourself. The benefits are manifold: No packaging, no transport, no godless multinational making profit from the sweat of Bangladeshi children.

Do what you can this Christmas; tangled pelicans everywhere will appreciate your efforts.

It’s a common phrase – well worn, overused even – but no less effective for it. A magic phrase that absolves the grossest of excesses, eases the guilt, shushes the shame and gives this great little nation of merry makers license to make merry. Loveable, feicless, destructive, cavorting rouges that we are. But the phrase is getting tired. And so are we. And so is the planet. And it’s high time we curbed the excesses because that bloated feeling isn't just confined to Christmas, it’s become pervasive in our days. It follows me out the door of the supermarket but it’s not the food or the drink giving it to me, it’s the packaging they come in. It’s a sickish feeling that comes on when I look at that tidy pile of plastic bags and containers that wrapped the organic fairtrade non-GM foodstuffs. Shove them in the recycling bin – press it down, close it quick, out of sight – but that feeling is still niggling because I’ve seen the photos of that poor tangled pelican and I've heard of the great Pacific garbage patch. And I know I’m only codding myself. After stewarding the bins at the Dingle Food Festival, twenty of us Transition Corca Dhuibhne volunteers realized just how much we are codding ourselves. We saw just how few plastics are recyclable and concluded that recycling was no kind of answer to this rising tide of plastic that has contaminating the people and oceans of the world. As an issue, its one of those, 'too depressing to think about' but by now we know the only panacea for depression is action. So we met again in the back room in Kennedys to hatch a plan to wean Dingle off of disposable plastics. This plan – grand, ambitious, delicious – will require the willingness and 36 West Kerry Live

And its home grown too by Camp Christmas Trees, Upper Camp who are also providing a complimentary Christmas wreath to be raffled on the night. Proceeds of the night go to Camp Fair. Teas and refreshments will be served at the interval. Your support will be appreciated. Camp Christmas Trees Christmas Trees are on sale at O’ Dwyers Retail Centre in Camp. There are plenty of Trees to choose from, freshly cut as well as potted trees which come in a very nice Terracotta Pot. Wreaths are freshly made every day and you can buy them decorated or undecorated. Obituary The death of Jim Cournane, Kielduff, Tralee occurred recently. Jim was predeceased by his wife Hannah (nee Kennedy), Maum, Camp. Sympathy is extended to his sisters Breda and Greta and all his extended family, relatives and friends. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Brendans Church Clogher on Monday 21st November followed by burial in Old Rath Cemetery on Tuesday, 22nd November. May he Rest In Peace. Book Launch The launch of Tony O Callaghans book entitled “The Kerry Coast” was performed by former Kerry footballer Eoin Liston, he himself a scribe at The Railway Tavern, Camp on Friday 11th November. “The Kerry Coast”, Eoin said, was essential reading in all Kerry households and he urged parents to share this book which he described as a part of their heritage with their offspring. And Eoin in conclusion recited, in his own inimitable passionate 40 West Kerry Live

way, a verse of Sigerson Clifford’s I am Kerry to illustrate his point. Tony O Callaghan, the author himself said that the idea to write a book on the Kerry Coast had been simmering in his mind for a long time and was satisfied that the final production fulllfilled a dream. The influence of sailing the coast with his brother Brendan gave him an aspect on his native county that allowed freedom of description to balance his many excursions by foot and by bicycle on land. On the day following the launch Tony organised a coastal walk around and along the shoreline of Camp and Killelton. Local historian Seamus O Donnell proved to be a most interesting guide and his deep, heartfelt knowledge of ‘his own place’ was much appreciated by those who were in attendance. The walk tracked around to Kilteebane where the versatile Milo O Brien put on a ‘one man and his dog(s) display that held those present spellbound. This was rural and coastal Kerry at its best. The Kerry Coast is available in all Solar Systems good bookshops in Kerry and in Amazon. Have Yourself a Very Berry Christmas!

Irene Ní Fhlannúra Cranberries are increasingly popular at the Christmas table, bringing flavour and colour to our festive feast. Long before cranberries featured in the cookery books, they played an important role in Native American Medicine. A native fruit to North America, cranberries grew wild in the peaty boglands of Northeastern American and Southern Canada. Since the 1800’s they have been cultivated all over North America and also in Central Europe, Germany and Finland. As we know from history, the pilgrims would not have survived the wilderness of the New World without the help of the Native Indians, who taught them, among other things, how to get the most of this tiny berry. Traditionally, the Native American Indian used cranberries as food, medicine and dye for fabrics and quills. Interestingly, the original energy bar was made by the Indians for sustenance during long journeys, particularly during the Winter. A mixture called Pemmican, in which cranberries were mashed with equal quantities of dried deer meat and fat tallow (yum!). The fat acted as a high calorie preservative for the protein-rich meat and the acidity and antioxidant nature of the cranberries made it resistant to bacteria. While the Pemmican bar may have lost out to more appetizing snacks, the function and purpose of the bar is to be admired for its provision of true nourishment and sustenance during bleak times. Most notably, cranberries were and still are used for the prevention of bladder and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Validated by modern science, cranberry is now known to stop bacteria, such as E.Coli from adhering to the inner wall of the urinary tract. For infection to occur, these bacteria must attach themselves to the inner linings. When this occurs, the immune system instigates an inflammatory response which leads to the discomfort and classical symptoms of a UTI. The protective property of the cranberry come from proanthocyanidins, which are also found in blueberries and acerola cherries. Cranberry is most effective for preventing this type of UTI but may also be useful if infection has already set in by shortening the duration of an infection. The medicinal use of cranberries in chronic cystitis has only seen benefit when bacteria are known to be the root cause. In the case of non-bacterial Interstitial cystitis cranberry has shown not to be effective and may cause further irritation to inflamed urinary tract linings. It is, therefore, important to get a firm diagnosis before using cranberry for chronic inflammatory conditions of the urinary tract. The mechanism in which these proanthocyanidins work together with the antioxidant properties of the cranberry is also responsible for its use as a mouth and gum tonic. Once again, the Native Indian advised sailors and whalers to take barrels of cranberries on board with them to prevent scurvy. Cranberry is still in used today to treat bleeding gums and periodontal disease. The discovery of the specific mechanism in which cranberry blocks the adherence of certain bacteria to the inner lining of organs has expanded this area of research and studies into its use for the prevention of stomach ulcers by inhibiting bacteria H. Pylori to embed itself in stomach linings, is very promising. Cranberry is available as fresh berries, in juice or as extract in supplement form. Much of the therapeutic benefit of cranberries is thought

to be superior in the fresh berries and you would need to consume 100-150 berries daily for medicinal use. If buying cranberry juice, opt for unsweetened, pure cranberry juice or juice your own cranberries as anything else is just an unhealthy sugary drink. The juice has a sharp, tart taste but may be diluted with water if necessary. For prevention of UTI 30ml daily of unsweetened pure cranberry juice is recommended and increased to 3 or 4 times daily at onset or during an active infection. Extracts of cranberry are also available as powders, capsules and tinctures. Seek out reputable suppliers and check ingredients for unwanted sweeteners, fillers or bulking agents that may negate the benefits of taking a cranberry supplement. Cranberries are in season now and at their nutritional peak from October to December. Fresh cranberries can be stored in the fridge for up to 20 days. They may collect a bit of moisture in the fridge but once they are not too mushy can be used safely. As they have such a short season it might be worth storing them in the freezer, particularly if you intend to use them medicinally. Spread fresh cranberries onto a flat baking sheet, place in the freezer for 2 hours. Once fully frozen they can then be transferred into freezer bags. Juice them or blend them straight from frozen or toss through warm porridge or Winter salad for a cheerful splash of colour! In the Top 14, Aiming for the Summit Nuala Moore It is such an honour to again be nominated by the World Open Water Swimming Association selected and shortlisted in the top 14 in the world of Open Water Swimming. I have pushed limits and I have pushed emotions but along the way I have learned that we swimmers and humans we have amazing potential to achieve. My ethos is no swim is designed to test you medically so I was working mainly with research and understanding while pushing my body to 0 deg limits. The awards are meant to honour the men and women who: * best embody the spirit of open water swimming, * possess the sense of adventure, tenacity and perseverance that open water swimmers are known for, and * have most positively influenced the world of open water swimming in calendar year 2016. S This last year has been a year of super challenges I competed 4 times in Russia and also traveled to the so called ‘end of the world' swims. Dec 2015 Tyumen Siberia water 0 degree 200m and 500m at 0 deg Jan 2016 Ireland Ice Swim 1000m at 4.8deg

September 2016 Murmansk completed Kola Bay 1.200m at 8 degree September 2016 Argentina Tierra Del Fuego Ushuaia 1000m @ 5 deg September Argentina: Relay swim from Port Navarino Chile to Post Ushuaia Argentina 3-5deg in the Beagle Channel Over the last few years my interest in swimming in the Ice has concentrated on safety. The sport has exploded with so many people now swimming longer distances, more often and I would love to see people paying attention to safety plans and also to understanding the cost medically of these sports to the body-even including other extreme sports. I worked over the last 2 years with medical doctors in Russia and Argentina on understanding the body and the impact and am now writing a manual on Hypothermia and Cold water injuries related to cold water immersions. In September I was inside the Arctic Circle and down at the Antarctic within 2 weeks. What an amazing experience - there was an opportunity to swim across the Beagle Channel from Port Navarino Chile to Port Ushuaia Argentina. A team of us relayed across this 3 deg water. We had to get out passport stamped on Chile and then once onto the beach in Ushuaia we had to immediately bring our passports to get stamped! it was so funny. I also completed 1000m at 5 deg at the Tierra Del Fuego. I presented at a conference on the risks of Ice Swimming and hypothermia. In the last 12 months I have travelled to Russia 4 times, In April I competed and won the Russian 1000m Ice Swimming Championships in far east Russia in the Yenesie River which originates in Mongolia and empties in the Arctic at 1 deg water. It was colossal swim as it was open water route. I also travelled to Tyumen and again competed at the World Championships at 0 deg. In September at Murmansk I swam across Kola Bay 1,200m at 8 deg another river empties into the Arctic. I am delighted to be nominated for this award it is based on my work on safety. Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh 1-15 : Killorglin Community College 0-8 Meán Scoil Castlegregory had a comfortable win in the McDyer Cup final last week. This win is the result of hard work and huge commitment from players, coaches and teachers at all levels and maintains our 100% record in all competitions this year. The Meán Scoil defence led by Brian Dowling and Dylan Hoare was outstanding and held Killorglin to 3 points in the first half. The midfield pairing of Patrick O'Donoghue and Mikey Lyne dominated from start to finish scoring 1-9 between them. Jimmy O'Grady also caused constant trouble scoring 5 points. It's certainly onwards and upwards for this group. Team captain Cormac Cronin who was industrious throughout accepted the cup to the delight of Parents and students along to support. 46 West Kerry Live

Óglaigh Chill Airne 1913-1916

2016

Macallaí na Cásca, 20 le Tomás B. Ó Luanaigh foilsithe ag Coiscéim ‘Ar fhilleadh abhaile dó ón Rotunda i mBaile Átha Cliath tar éis bhunú Óglaigh na hÉireann, thug Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha (An Seabhac) aghaidh ar ‘An Dún’ i gCill Airne chun a rang Gaeilge a mhúineadh mar ba ghnáth. Bhailigh daichead ógánach an doras isteach chun freastal ar an rang seachtainiúil, agus shiúil amach an chéad bhuíon d’Óglaigh na hÉireann i gCiarraí. B’shin oíche Dé hAoine 28 Samhain 1913. Léireofar sa saothar seo conas a tharla an t-éacht céanna, an cúlra a bhí leis agus an toradh a bhí air. Nochtfar an tslí inar mhéadaigh buíon an Dúin ó dhaichead Óglach ar an oíche gheimhridh úd ar bhruach Loch Léin go dtí buíon mhór Óglach fé airm. Pléifear cad a bhain dóibh fé Cháisc 1916, agus mar a sheasadar an géibheann ina dhiaidh sin.’ - Coiscéim Bhí seoladh an-mhaith ar an leabhar i gCill Airne oíche Dé Luain agus tá fáilte romhat go seoladh in Óstán Meadowlands i dTrá Lí ar 7.00i.n. Dé hAoine beag seo an 9ú Nollaig.
