The Rovers Go Marching On On Sunday 15th January Dingle Bay Rovers will travel to Limerick to take on Janesboro FC in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup. The game is the next step in the ever evolving story of the club. Formed over twenty years ago by Martin Neill and James Barrett, the Rovers first togged out in the field where the Community Hospital is now situated and also played on a pitch near where the Pobalscoil now stands. Beginning competitve life in Division 6 of the Kerry District League, they won promotion in their first season. The following season they were again promoted. It was a great beginning for the newly formed club and in the years since, all those involved have worked tirelessly to keep the show on the road. They moved to their own ground and clubhouse in Gallarus, a youth set-up was formed to nurture young talent in the area and then a few months ago, in the club’s 20th season, they were crowned Champions of the Kerry District League’s
Premier Competition. It was just reward for the dedication and perseverance of all involved. On entering the FAI Junior Cup, Dingle Bay Rovers joined 600 other teams from all over the country. When the final whistle blew in Clonmel on December 4th, the West Kerry club found themselves in the last 32 of the competition. Now they are looking to go one step further when they travel to Limerick. Whatever the result they have done themselves and West Kerry proud, not just this season but going back over twenty years. A bus will be travelling to the game from Dingle, details will be on the Dingle Bay Rovers facebook page. The game kicks off at 2pm. C’mon the Rovers!! West Kerry Live 3

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights
The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 10th January will be the Ken Loach directed I, Daniel Blake. The
film marks another well-told chapter in the director’s powerfully populist filmography and tells the story of Daniel Blake a 59-year-old widowed carpenter who must rely on welfare after a recent heart attack leaves him unable to work. Despite his doctor’s diagnosis, British authorities deny Blake’s benefits and tell him to return to his job. As Daniel navigates his way through an agonizing appeal process, he begins to develop a strong bond with a destitute, single mother who’s struggling to take care of her two children. The following week on Tuesday 17th January the feature will be A United Kingdom. The film is based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richard Williams Wren’s Day--- The weather was most favourable to The Wran this year and brought out huge support for the 4 main Wren Troops who provided great colour, humour, music and entertainment around town on St Stephens Day. Each group collected funds for various local charities and organisations while creating a unique atmosphere in the pubs and of great commercial value to the local economy also. What I did miss this year was the lack of door to door visitations by the young groups who called to their neighbours houses in colourful disguise as part of the Wran Tradition. Lets hope our young people we are not losing the values of such a wonderful tradition here in West Kerry. The Fireworks Display on New Years Eve was hampered by the wet weather which broke a few minutes before the blastoff. Still large crowds viewed the display from sheltered vantage points and raised areas around town.Although the display was a little shorter than normal it was well worth seeing and well done to all concerned for arranging such an event annually since the Millennium.
The Band Parade --Its only when one witnesses this traditional event that one fully appreciates how lucky we are to have such a wonderful FIFE AND DRUM BAND here in Dingle. Come what may weather wise the BANNA CEOIL take to the streets for numerous events throughout the year. The verdict from the hundreds who marched around with the Band on New Years Eve was that this was one of their best performances ever.I would certainly concur with this appreciation and thank each and every member for their ongoing commitment and dedication to the Band. Míle Buíochas also to the Gardai and stewards who helped make the parade such a success this year. Race Night-- The main funding for the Fireworks Display comes from the RACE NIGHT which will be held at the end of January. The race card still has a few races vacant so its not too late to show your support and horses may be purchased at Sheehys Spar in Green Street. We remind all who have already committed to purchase horses or ads in the programme to drop in their donations as soon as possible. Volunteering--- As most of our readers are probably making resolutions on what they intend to achieve in 2017 I ask you all to consider putting Volunteering on your list this year. I know that all the various groups throughout the Peninsula involved in organising activities be it Sporting, Cultural or Social will be delighted to welcome people of all ages to share their workload.Yes there is no better time than the start of a new year to get involved in your local community so be brave and take the first step in January this year. Tidy Towns--- We wish to congratulate and thank the County Council Staff who did such a wonderful job in cleaning up the streets after the New Years Celebrations before the town woke up the following morning. These guys are another part of the machine which keeps Dingle to the forefront in visitors glowing reviews of our area but the work they do is rarely appreciated. Míle Buiochas Lads. We are still looking for the use of a vacant garage or shed for a few months for indoor work in making timber flower tubs from recycled pallets. Any small building within reasonable distance of town will be considered. Slan Tamall!!!.

Farming News
Louis Murchan
A new year is born, but to many it is just a routine. This is the lot of farming, and from that point of view routine is everything. Farmers must remember that there are certain actions that need to be taken care of, at certain times of the year. The singly most important application annually is the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). If you do not return this, in time, there is practically no point in completing any other form through-out the year. The deadline for this is traditionally 15th May, and this year will be no exception. This time of year, requires farmers to complete a sheep census. Dairy and beef farmers must register all births on farm, as well as all purchases and sales through-out the year. BDGS and GLAs farmers need to keep a record of actions required and acted upon, during the year. This is just the tip of an increasing bureaucratic iceberg. So, be vigilant in 2017. Mostly, you will see notification of these requirements over the coming months, in various publications, including our own esteemed agri-column. So, keep your paperwork in order, be stress free and have a good year. Avian Influenza H5N8 in a Wild Bird in County Wexford Confirmed The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today announced that it has confirmed avian influenza subtype H5N8 in a wild bird in County Wexford. The wild duck – a wigeon - was found alive but unable to fly in Wexford Town on 28 December. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has confirmed that although the H5N8 subtype can cause serious disease in poultry and other birds, no human infections with this virus have been reported world-wide and therefore risk to humans is considered to be very low. The finding is not unexpected given the detection of highly pathogenic H5N8 in wild birds in Great Britain in the last two weeks, and comes one week after the Minister introduced regulations under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 requiring the compulsory housing of poultry as a result of the increased threat. Further tests are being carried out to determine whether the virus is the same highly pathogenic strain that is currently present in Great Britain and mainland Europe. The results of these tests will not be available until the middle of next week. The Department reiterates that strict bio-security measures are necessary to prevent the introduction of avian influenza into poultry and captive bird flocks. Flock owners should remain vigilant for any signs of disease in their flocks, and report any disease suspicion to their nearest Department Veterinary Office. Year of Sustainable Grassland Launched - 2017 The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, officially launched 2017 as the ‘Year of Sustainable Grassland’. This initiative will see a yearlong focus by the Department, its Agencies and other stakeholders on grass productivity and utilisation, grassland sustainability and the international reputation of Irelands’ grass based production systems. The aim of the initiative is to improve grass productivity and utilisation and to enhance and promote awareness of the sustainability of Ireland’s grassbased production system. There will be a range of events over the coming year to support the initiative and will involve all the agencies and many industry stakeholders. UN World Food Programme to receive 20M In recognition of the continued need to aid those suffering food deprivation, the Department of Agriculture has provided €20m as an advance payment of Ireland’s 2017 contribution to the UN World Food Programme (WFP). This is in addition to Ireland’s 2016 contribution of €20 million which was paid in July. This advance will significantly contribute to enhance WFP’s capability to address the growing humanitarian crises that our world is facing. Ireland has a strategic partnership agreement with the WFP for the years 2016 to 2018. This advance payment for 2017, while generally targeted at WFP’s emergency and protracted relief operations, will give WFP the flexibility to plan and target this funding in the most strategic, efficient and effective manner. This support is particularly necessary in the context of the current crisis in the Syria region where large parts of our funding will be targeted. This advance brings total Overseas Development Aid spending by the Department to €43 million this year. In addition to payment of Ireland’s annual subscription to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), DAFM also supports specific worthwhile projects including: FAO’s emergency support for vulnerable farm households in the Syria region; projects building agricultural value chains and reducing food loss and waste in Africa; and a number of initiatives on climate change and sustainable agriculture. UN World Food Programme:- WFP is a United Nations organisation responsible for the delivery of food assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world partnering with other United Nations agencies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector to enable people, communities and countries to meet
10 West Kerry Live
their own food needs. WFP is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, and is funded exclusively from voluntary contributions. In addition to DAFM’s core funding of WFP, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also provides funding to WFP for crisis programmes in specific countries and regions. UN Food and Agriculture Organisation:- FAO is a United Nations organisation is mandated to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable, enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems and increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises. 2016 Sheep and Goat Census. Over 44,000 sheep and goat keepers registered on the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s database will receive their Annual Sheep and/or Goat Census 2016 forms in the coming week. This year the Department has selected Saturday 31st December 2016 as the census date. Completing and returning the census is a legal obligation. The onus remains with the flock/herd keeper to make sure that completed census forms are received by the closing date of 31st January 2017. The census provides valuable statistical information to the Department and other organisations involved in the development of the industry. More importantly for farmers, submission of a completed Census is central in declaring that required stocking rates are being maintained and facilitates the drawing down of payments under schemes such as the Basic Payment Scheme, Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme, AEOS, GLAS etc. and also the new Sheep Welfare Scheme announced in the Budget. With regard to the new Sheep Welfare Scheme, it should be noted that while the census figures submitted for December 2014 and December 2015 will be used as the historic reference, it will be a requirement of the scheme that flock keepers continue to submit their annual census in a timely manner. Census information is also used during farm/flock inspections where the inspector has details of the census returns submitted for the holding in the last four or five years. This information is used as the basis for identifying whether animal records have been adequately maintained. 2016 census returns may be returned either by post via the enclosed addressed envelope to Seefin Data Management, PO Box 17, An Post, Cahirdown, Listowel D.S.U, Co Kerry or online via agfood.ie, no later than 31st January 2017. Failure to return the census on time may impact on future related payments from this Department. Keepers should be aware that, in the case of dispute regarding postal returns, the only acceptable proof of postage is a Registered or Express Post receipt. A postal certificate is no longer acceptable as proof of postage. Online returns can be made between 31st December 2016 and 31st January 2017 by users registered with agfood.ie. The Department has recently made improvements to this facility which will make online completion more efficient and user-friendly and will also give farmers access to historic sheep and/or goat census information submitted by them. Farmers not already registered with agfood.ie can do so by logging on to www.agfood.ie and clicking the option to register. It should be noted that the closing date of 31 January 2017 also applies to online Census returns so users registering for access to agfood.ie for the first time should allow sufficient time for their log-on details, which will allow access to all relevant online services, to be sent to them by post after they register. These logon details will be required to allow online completion of the census. The final point in completing your census is for sheep-only farmers. Ensure that you have at least One ewe for each hectare farmed. Otherwise, you will have trouble meeting your minimum stocking requirement, at the end of the year, This will put your ANC payment in jeopardy. Dog Owners reminded of Microchip Rule Some people still digs and other pets for Christmas. These dog owners are reminded that, under the microchipping regulations in force since March 2016, all dogs over 12 weeks of age must be microchipped and registered on an approved database. These are lovely little animals, and can be a great friend to your son or daughter, but they must be cared for, fed, walked and treated properly. It is recommended that the dog (or other pet) should pay a visit to a vet, for the start of a healthy life. They need treatment for worms, fleas, and vitamin boosts, etc. A child will invest a lot on money in his playstation or xbox, on games, and accessories, so spend a few euros on your pet. With a bit of luck, it will be with you for the next 12 to 15 years. ………….and here’s to a good New Year. Hopefully it will be better than the last one. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Beating the January Blues! Irene NĂ FhlannĂşra The brown, withered pine needles on the sitting room floor are a stark reminder that the festive high is about to come crashing down! With only the Three Wise Men to come, the thought of what happens after January 6th can be foreboding and fill many people with a sense of dread. Listening to the radio and reading through media there is an expectation to get off your backside, give up sugar, alcohol, partying and carousing and prepare yourself for a complete turnaround which involves nibbling on microgreens and sipping watermelon juice! The first step to “beating the January bluesâ€? is to switch off from this current hype, after all, the same media frenzy had us pouring a glass of Baileys at 11am less than 3 weeks ago! While it is true, the start of a new year offers the perfect opportunity to begin again, to resolve to be a better human and self-improve, the fear of change and the fear of failure is enough to blow the best of intentions in a very short time. The term “bluesâ€? is associated with a short period of depression, low mood and/or agitation that can affect anyone at any time during the year. Many people will feel low as the Christmas holidays end, family moving away again, maybe overspending and over-indulgence can be hard to take once the party is over – feeling a bit down postChristmas is not unusual and will pass in a short time once normal routines return. The January Blues suggests that things will improve once Spring comes around. The stark difference between December’s festivities and the stillness of January is often the main trigger for the January Blues. Let us not forget that we are still in Winter, a quiet time in Nature with many plants and mammals still resting. It’s a reflective time for humans, ideal for making plans and preparing for the year ahead, but may not be favourable just yet for a sprint up Mt. Brandon! Food this time of year reflects the low position of Earth energy. From within the ground comes a wealth of root vegetables, dark greens and hardy cruciferous such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and kale. The long growing period of these vegetables allows them to absorb more minerals from the Earth which in turn keeps us grounded and nourished throughout the Winter season. Bones and meat cuts for slow cooking are best this time of year, again, reflecting the need for mineral-rich foods for sustenance throughout the darker, cooler days. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium and selenium are best extracted from food through longer cooking times making broths, soups and stews ideal to get the best out our meat, fish and vegetables during the Winter. When people relied on their own surroundings for nourishment, preserved foods such as dried nuts, wholegrains. fermented and cured meats and fish and fermented and pickled vegetables made up for any shortfall in fresh produce. Although our supermarkets are filled with produce now grown all year round, foods in season or preserved by traditional methods still offer the best nutrition to stave off Winter woes. Vitamin D levels are at their lowest during January as our Summer stores are surely depleted by now. It is likely we may not have had enough sunshine during our last Summer or did not spend enough time exposed to the sun for enough vitamin D to see us through the Winter. Low vitamin D status is strongly associated with low mood and depression. Vitamin D supplementation is a first line therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), confirming the correlation between vitamin D status and mood disorders. The best approach to vitamin D is to get tested and get a proper dosage guide to supplementation. The RDA for vitamin D of 400 – 800iu falls short for most people and more so, for those with low mood, depression, SAD and anxiety. The correct dosage is unique to everyone and depends on present vitamin D status, body weight, gender and state of health. As Vitamin D is also involved in numerous body functions including immunity and bone health, this is a simple yet extremely effective measure to reduce risk of illness at any time of the year. Any episode of depression is exacerbated by alcohol, food binging 12 West Kerry Live
and poor sleep, which is another reason why some people really feel the full brunt of the blues come January. Getting into a good routine soon after Christmas will help shorten a bout of blues. Focus on feeling healthy by cutting out as much crap food as possible, have warm mineral baths before bed and give your liver a break from alcohol. This way, instead of feeling a total wreck, you will arrive at Spring, well rested, restored and prepared for the Season ahead. A very happy New Year to all my readers, may 2017 be filled with soup, salads and plenty plants! t Irene NĂ FhlannĂşra, Nutritional Therapist at RĂŠ Nua Nutrition Clinic, Dingle 066 9151360. over from Manchester. That was followed by a meal, with the adults eating in the main sitting-room and the kids in the kitchen. Plenty of grub for all, especially cakes and pies. Ended at 1.30am.

Tuesday, January 6.
Thursday, January 1, 1987.Up at
10am to a new year - let's hope it's a better one in every respect. Resolution? To write up this dairy on a regular basis. We all headed to Sheehys in Baileristeen after tea for a social gathering. The kids played with the Christmas toys. Home about 1am after an incredible supper. At least 60 people and possibly up to 100 died in a hotel fire in Puerto Rico last night and there are reports that it may be arson.
Friday, January 2. A nice autumn-like day with good sunny spells. Met Séamus Garvey in Dingle and he told us that a whale had washed up on Kinard Strand so, after a light lunch, we headed over there to find that the whale was little more than a heap of guts. It had been dead for a long time but was only washed up yesterday. What a stink! RTE is celebrating 25 years of broadcasting.
Saturday, January 3. A dry day to start with but turned to soft rain by afternoon. Took the kids to see the newly refurbished Dingle library which reopened just before Christmas. They've done a splendid job of decorating and the new facilities include micro film and video equipment. Cut down the eucalyptus trees in the garden this afternoon. They had grown too tall and their roots might have caused a problem with water and sewage pipes. American singer Aretha Franklin has been inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is a bit strange since she's more of a blues singer. She's the first female singer to be so honoured.
Sunday, January 4. Foggy, drizzle and cool with a few bright spells later. Took the kids to 11 o'clock Mass in Dingle. Fr. O'Connor was not preaching today. During his sermon last Sunday he spoke in relation to the Divorce Referendum. A woman in the congregation shouted at him to ' Stop making political statements where people have no right of reply'. Then she walked out. Never witnessed such an outburst in a church before. Took the kids to Dún Síon strand after dinner. A Brazilian passenger jet crashed into the jungle in the Ivory Coast yesterday, 49 dead and two survivors and a train crash in Maryland killed 16.
Monday, January 5. We had Mass in the house this evening with the extended family and some neighbours. It was celebrated by Father Jim who came 14 West Kerry Live
Little Christmas or Nollaig na mBan. Tom Sheehy's 'new tractor' arrived today. It's a Massey-Ferguson 35. Tom says a small, light tractor will do less damage to the land during the winter months. Took the kids on a long walk by way of Emlagh, across the Short Strand to Dún Síon strand then by road to Beenbawn and back to Ballintaggart.
Wednesday, January 7. Hard frost last night and very cold all day but bright and sunny. Took the kids to school on their first day back after the Christmas holidays - they didn't seem to mind too much. Later, took down all the decorations and distributed the balloons to the waiting demolition crew!
Thursday, January 8. Red sky over Strickeen and the Reeks this morning so looks like bad weather on the way. Bought a brass water tap in Fitzys and fitted it to an outside water pipe so as to have easy access for a hose. Borrowed some books from the library. President Reagan is recovering from prostate surgery.
Friday, January 9. Headed to Tralee after breakfast but developed radiator trouble in Annascaul so back to Moran's garage for quick repairs and back on the road to Tralee. Home by lunch time. Later, helped Tom fetter the sheep. Tommy Kelliher came along too with his dog 'Rose'. She was able to control the sheep better than a flock of men!
Saturday, January 10. Pruned the escallonia hedge which is probably the best species of hedge in this coastal climate. It's salt resistant, fairly wind resistant, evergreen, provides good shelter, good nesting area for birds and has a great show of flowers. Had to give up when the rain came.
Monday, January 12. The whole countryside frozen solid today and we even have ice on the windows inside the house. Luckily the roads are dry or there would have been many accidents. Lots of snow in the east of the country. The very strong north-east wind made it much colder. When hanging out the washing the clothes were stiff before they even got on the line! Went to the CBS to sign up for a ten week woodwork course.
Tuesday, January 13. The Big Freeze continues - the worst for many years. Last night's temperatures ranged from - 6C to -10C. Went down the bog and cut 10 bags of firewood. This is the best time to work in the bog as it's frozen over. There's a rumour that Breandán MacGearailt will run for the Dáil - there may be an election soon and it promises to be a cracker.

Roast Beet and Carrot, Crispy Goats Cheese, Winter Leaves, Orange and Cumin Yogurt Dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
1 tsp. coriander
Happy New Year to all. Some of you have probably vowed to eat more healthy food after the Christmas period so to help you out I am giving you a healthy recipe. The one thing to remember is just because it is healthy doesn’t mean it has to lack flavour. This tasty warm salad is perfect for this time of year.
for the dressing
Ingredients For the goats cheese 150g goats cheese, cut into six portions thyme leaves, picked and very finely chopped 100g panko crumbs 2 eggs beaten 100g flour salt and pepper For the salad 3-4 carrots, peeled and cut into even sized lengths 3-4 beetroot, cut into even sized wedges ½ tsp. cumin,
garlic, finely chopped orange orange 100ml natural yoghurt lemon salt and pepper selection of salad leaves such as radicchio, mustard leaves or mizuna Method To prepare the goats cheese Season the breadcrumbs with thyme, salt and pepper. Put the flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs in three separate bowls and keep them in that order. Dip each piece of goats cheese in the flour and then in the egg. Use the other hand to take it from the egg and to add it to the breadcrumbs. Repeat this process with the rest of the goat’s cheese. Keep this aside until the needed just before serving. For the carrots and the beetroot Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
Place the carrots into boiling salted water and likewise with the beetroot in another pot and cook them for about 5- 10 minutes. Strain the vegetables and place on a hot tray. Add the garlic, cumin, coriander and the juice of half an orange to the hot vegetables, season and roast until nice and crispy. When almost done remove from the oven and remove the liquid from the tray and put in a bowl with the remaining juice from the oranges. For the dressing Add some of the juices from the roasting tray to the yoghurt and add the orange zest followed by a squeeze of lemon. Season it with some black pepper and salt. To serve Heat a pan and when it is hot add some oil. Carefully add the coated goats cheese and cook for about two minutes before turning it over. The breadcrumbs should be a golden colour. Place the salad leaves in a large bowl and mix in just enough dressing to coat the leaves and toss well. Add in the carrot and beetroot and toss again. Divide the salad between six bowls and place the warm goats cheese on top and serve immediately. Enjoy!!! West Kerry Live 17
Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly Herbs to promote detoxification Detoxification also known as cleansing supports the body to rid itself of the build-up of harmful toxins. Our bodies are continuously working to neutralise and eliminate toxins from the body, which are present from the day we are born, passed on from the mother to the child at birth and continually thereafter from our environment. It is in fact impossible to be toxin free as we do not and indeed cannot live in a sterile environment and normal microflora bacterial and fungal strains are essential as they provide protection against infections, educate the immune system, ensure tolerance to foods and contribute to nutrient digestion. Our systems however can become overburdened and toxins will accumulate potentially from environmental pollutants and where there is disharmony in the body. When our immune system is weak, for example, we are more prone to infection or when there is stagnation due to excess, poor diet or lack of exercise toxins can accumulate above normal levels. This accumulation of bacteria and fungi can then contribute to a variety of problems with for example low-level symptoms manifesting as tiredness, skin problems, headaches, irritability and poor sleep. Left untreated pathologies can develop as the body becomes less and less able to eliminate and neutralise toxic accumulation. The intestinal microflora, liver and immune system all play a role in neutralising circulating toxins while the kidneys, skin and intestines help to eliminate them. Supporting each of these organs and systems therefore can help to ensure efficient disposal of toxic accumulation. Personally I prefer a gentle approach to cleansing the system rather than an all or nothing approach as an aggressive approach to cleansing can be harmful to an already weakened system. Better to take a compassionate gentle approach to healing our bodies, which will ultimately prove more sustainable. This is where herbs can play a significant role by taking a holistic approach using herbs to support the body while focusing on the particular area of weakness in the system. There are a number of herbs we can use with herbal tonics playing a role in helping the body to neutralise toxins and other herbs supporting the body to eliminate waste build up and congestion in the body. Attention to diet, exercise and emotional and spiritual well-being will act as an important catalyst to any herbal regime. Herbs to support elimination and promote harmony include burdock (Arctium lappa), cleaver (Galium aparine) and nettle (Urtica dioca). These herbs support the lymph system and restore proper functioning to the 18 West Kerry Live
body increasing overall health and vitality. Digestive laxatives include yellow dock (Rumex crispus) and dandelion (Tarax officinalis), both of which support elimination of waste and toxins through the colon. Diet together with these herbs is particularly important to help balance the intestinal microflora together with fibre rich foods which help to bind and eliminate toxins from the body. Other important digestive herbs include meadowsweet (Filependula ulmaria) and chamomile (Matricaria reticuta) which act as antacids and help to calm the stomach. Liver support herbs include milk thistle (Carduus marianus), dandelion root (Tarax radix) and turmeric (Curcuma longa), which protect the liver and help to clear congestion in this organ. Expectorants such as, white horehound (Marrubium vulgare) and mullein (Verbascum thaspus) help to clear lung congestion. Diuretics which help the kidneys to work more efficiently and support elimination of metabolic waste, such as, urea and uric acid include, dandelion leaf (Tarax folia) and celery seed (Apium graveolens) and cleaver. Important lymphatics helping to stimulate the circulation of lymph, which ensures the efficient removal of waste products from our metabolism, include calendula (Calendula officinalis) cleaver and red clover (Trifolium pratense). The lymph system supports the immune system and together herbs such as, ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), burdock and echinacea (Echinaceae angustifolia), will help to protect the body and increase vitality. The above is only a snapshot of the many herbs we can take to support the body to carry out its many functions efficiently and safely. Where there is specific weaknesses in the system additional or alternative herbs may be needed but attention to diet, exercise and a good herbal regime focusing on the liver, lymph and immune system will ensure the smooth and efficient workings of the
intestinal microflora, which is constantly working away to ensure your health and wellbeing. As above none of us are immune from illness and as our bodies become weakened from stress, excess or environmental factors, following a herbal regime for a period of time will help to cleanse the body and bring you back to your normal sunny self, ready and able to cope with the remaining winter months. Safety considerations: Red clover may potentiate the effects of anticoagulant drugs Chamomile and dandelion may cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to plants in the Asteracea family. Meadowsweet should be avoided by people with salicylate sensitivity. Siberian ginseng may interfere with cardiac medications including hypo- and hypertensive medication. It may also enhance some drug effects. Echinacea may cause reaction in those sensitive to the Asteracea family and theoretically may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy. Turmeric may interfere with anticoagulant medication. Milk Thistle; Long term use of milk thistle can potentially lower ferritin levels so may not be suitable for people low in iron. Nettle may theoretically decrease the efficiency of anticoagulant drugs. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted in her shop Nature’s Knowledge, Lower Main Street, Dingle, by email at: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109

Staying Present to Yourself and Your Child Anne Healy A child once told me how upset she felt after a row with her mother. She knew that she had been un-cooperative but what her mother said to her made her feel really guilty. What the mother said was ‘after all I do for you, I bend over backwards and this is the thanks I get’! The sentence rang a bell in my own head. First I was annoyed that the parent placed that guilt on their child, as this child internalised that she was a burden to her mother. Many parents I know have said this and indeed it was said to me. I know now it was said when my mother had reached a crescendo, was stressed and felt she was not appreciated. If we could turn back the clock I would like to have said to my mother ‘you are wonderful and I appreciate everything you do for me. I know that you put your needs before mine. I also I know that there are times when you may resent doing that because I do not always show my appreciation. But I feel a burden to you when you tell me you bend over backwards for me’! But I was a child and did not have the skill or language to say this to her. The mother in the story I refer to was upset when I told her how that her child felt she was a burden on her. She is a great mother, but like many parents she is busy and stressed. I encouraged her to be compassionate towards herself and allow for the fact that all parents say and do things when stressed and very often say things they regret when they feel unappreciated. In my last article I spoke to you about ‘staying present’ to yourself and your children in the weeks ahead. I am going to offer more suggestions in this article about ways of supporting yourself in the event you feel stressed and also some suggestions of fun things to do with your child that will help them and you to feel present and more mindful. I came across an acronym STOP in an article in The Huffington Post by mindfulness teacher Lisa Kring which may be of use to you to support yourself when you find you are about to react as opposed to respond to your child, partner, or even work colleague! You could also teach your child this skill and adjust the language according to their age! S- Stop. Whenever you notice stress or imbalance, simply pause in awareness. T- Take a breath. Simply bring your awareness into the breathing body, just letting the sensations of the breath move into the forefront. Also, notice how your mind begins to settle a bit, bringing more clarity. Breath awareness actually harmonizes the cardiovascular systems in the body, while also calming the “alarm” centre’s in the more primitive parts of the brain, restoring full brain function. When we are stressed, we can’t think clearly or see any situation accurately. O- Observe. Just notice how the breath begins to naturally bring balance to the systems of the body. Let this be felt. Also, look around. What is really happening, in the moment? P- Proceed. Having shifted to a more mindfully responsive mode, take an action that is more skilful, appropriate and best attuned to your situation. So if we consider the mother I mention above if she could have used the skill I outline above she and her child would have felt better. If she had taken a moment and checked in with herself to ask how she felt about her daughter been un-cooperative she would have discovered that she was hurt and angry. This is a total normal reaction. However once we can acknowledge how we feel when our buttons are pressed we can respond to a child in a way that both of you feel good about. So for example the mother maybe could have said ‘Susan (not real name of child) when you do not co-operate with me I feel upset and angry. It really helps me when you co-operate’! The child in turn could then have apologised as she is learning from her mother the skill of responding instead or reacting. When we do this we are more mindful about our own needs and those of others. Lisa Kring considers that there are five main tenets of mindful parenting, in this article I am going to discuss the first one and in following articles I will discuss the rest, however if you wish to check out all the tenets check out :http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lisa-kring/the-5-main-tenets-ofmindful-parenting_b_4086080.html The first tenet is: 1. Make space for just being, every day. Kring suggests that ‘the greatest gift we can give our children is our full presence. We must begin with ourselves first. Being present, modelling this capacity for your children, is
22 West Kerry Live
priceless’. I recommended in the past if you can attend a mindfulness class in your area it would really help with you in finding ways to truly support yourself. However if that is not an option for you can begin to learn the technique I refer to above that helps us STOP and take stock!. And now for a few fun activities to try that will be beneficial to your child and yourself to become more present and relaxed! 1. Smell & Tell Pass something fragrant out to your child, such as a piece of fresh orange peel, a sprig of lavender or a dried fruit! Ask your child to close his or her eyes and breathe in the scent, focusing all of their attention only on the smell of that object. 2. The Art of TouchGive your child an object to touch, such as a ball, a feather, a soft toy, a stone, etc. Ask him or her to close their eyes and describe what the object feels like. This exercise and the one above are great ways to help children the practice of isolating their senses from one another! Very good for concentration and also offers quality time with you… and costs nothing! The Heartbeat Exercise If your child is a little hyper try getting him or her to jump up and down in place for one minute. Then get them to sit back down and place their hands on their hearts. Tell them to close their eyes and feel their heartbeats, their breath, and see what else they notice about their bodies. This is especially good for children who get dysregulated easily and need help to come back into their bodies in order to regulate their big feelings’ To conclude spending time in a mindful way with children builds a bond that will last forever. It lets the child know he or she is loved and appreciated. It opens the door for sharing any worries that may be on your child’s mind. It also helps the parent or carer to get to know the uniqueness of each child. It has huge benefits in reducing stress for overworked parents and carers! And it is equally important to make time for yourself each day and appreciate your uniqueness and value! For mindfulness classes check out www.kalyanacentre.com/.

Wedding Entertainment..W here to Start?! Eamonn Dowd What do we need? When should we book? How much is it all going to cost? These are just some of the questions you may be asking yourself if you’re in the fun business of planning a wedding. Musical entertainment can often be overlooked but more often than not it is the big difference between having a great wedding party and… well, one that's not so great. Getting it right for your big day may seem like an impossibility, but with a cool head (preferably screwed on) and a few chats over a couple-a cuppas, your night can be one that's forever remembered.
So where to start?
Before booking anything or even picking up the phone, identifying exactly when you want music during your day is crucial. This varies with each couple but for the most part there are 5 main areas to be taken into careful consideration; Church, Drinks Reception, Dinner, Band DJ. You had those 5 too??? Ok, great. Let's get it right from the get-go. Selecting suitable church music may be the trickiest of the bunch as finding appropriate outfits are limited. Piano, guitar or stringed instruments such as violin/cello accompanied by a singer is a tasteful option and is usually unique and pleasing to the ear. Some churches may be able to arrange an organ player or choir to play the standard hymns and this is also an option depending on the locality. Make sure your musicians are well experienced however as the silence of an official ceremony can often put looming pressure on a newcomer and any mishaps will be instantly recognised by the keenly raised ears of the church. Calling on your talented first cousin or prodigy niece for a song is possibly another option and a nice way to involve close ones in the event. Best of all they can't say "no", it's your wedding after all. The drinks reception is always a much more relaxed affair with some lively but volume conscious music a great preference. Live duos or 3 pieces are usually affordable for an 1-2 hour set and often a trad session is a perfect way to liven up the afternoon and also please Irish lovers not to mind getting feet tapping and people's bellies rumbling for dinner. Dinner music can be done simply by making a playlist on an iPod or laptop and played through the hotel sound-system which will be used later for the breathtaking speeches. A big one to remember here is to make the first song of the playlist the desired entry song for the Bride and Groom as they strut their stuff to the top table. This is totally down to preference but usually something up-tempo and bright goes down a treat…leave the soppy stuff to later. After that, the playlist should be background volume but recognisable. Remember, people are eating so heavy metal or techno is probably not the best path to go down, unless that's really what your going for. Think Forrest Gump soundtrack… The band. This causes a lot of stress and really should be one thing hovering at the top of the priority list. Busy wedding bands can be booked out 2-3 years in advance so getting the one you want, for the night you want is better done sooner rather than later. Paying extra attention to the music at friends weddings is a helpful advantage and crashing the odd randomers wedding to see a band is very acceptable. Make sure the band know your first dance as early as possible so that they have adequate time to learn it if not already in their repertoire. This can also be played on an iPod if there's an issue but is never really the same as the real deal. Bands are a chunky expense reaching up to €2,500 + extra for long distance travel so choose well. The DJ usually rounds up the day's entertainment so pay attention to getting this bang on. Make sure your Jockey of Discs is comfortable 24 West Kerry Live
on the mic and knows what works best with the crowd on the floor. A good DJ will ensure the records are spinning immediately after the band as a gap in entertainment will instantly lead to an empty dance floor with people shuffling off to the smoking area and bar. Choosing a big last song is also advisable to see the night to a close. Remember you will most likely be in the middle of the floor at this time with your newly-wed partner (if ye're still married) surrounded by your family and friends so make sure it's something known yet still pulls on those heartstrings. Working with experienced professionals helps no end and each contact should make arrangements as easy and straight-forward as humanly possible. Marital stress will be needed elsewhere on make-up, hair curls and locating where the rings were left. Most importantly, don't forget to enjoy the music when it does come round…that's why you hired us remember?! Our Big Day Amanda Prendeville & Denis Dowd
Type of wedding ceremony and reception Church ceremony in St Gobnaits Church DĂşn Chaoin and wedding reception in the Skellig Hotel Dingle. Number of Guests We only had immediate family at the wedding ceremony and approx 90 guests for the evening reception in the Skelligs Hotel. Best thing about the day Probably the highlight of the day was the ceremony, although we were both very nervous we enjoyed the intimacy of the small church ceremony surrounded by just our family. The evening reception was also fantastic, the meal and the party after was great. The staff and wedding team could not have been better in the Skelligs, the staff were so attentive to every detail and made sure it all went smoothly. Worst thing about the day The nerves before the ceremony were quite bad which looking back probably took from the experience a little. Anything you would change The day goes by so fast! I would probably try to relax a bit more before the ceremony and get rid of some of the nerves! Any tips for future brides and grooms Our wedding was planned quite quickly in comparison to alot of weddings and although we were lucky to get the venue we wanted and a great band, it does make sense to give yourself enough time to book well in advance if you can. Our Big Day Maura O’Connor and Alan Curley
Type of wedding ceremony and reception We had a traditional church/hotel wedding. Our church was my local- St. Mary's, Castlegregory and was just stunning on the day. Our reception was held in the Ballygarry House Hotel.
Number of guests We had just short of 300 guests attend on the day. Best thing about the day It is difficult to pick a highlight but walking down the aisle with my Dad and meeting Alan at the end was a definitely a special, almost surreal moment. Worst thing about the day The weather! I'll never forget the rain that morning, it was falling sideways in the gale of wind. Someone, somewhere, must have been thinking of us though because ten minutes
before we left for the church the winds abated, the rain stopped and the sun came out! By the time we came out of the church it was glorious. Anything you would change I know it is a total clichĂŠ but I wouldn't change a thing! Any tips for future brides and grooms I would just advise future brides and grooms to not worry about things outside of your control. Let the professionals be the professionals and everything will run smoothly. And if it doesn't- you probably won't notice anyway :)

Our Big Day Karena Kavanagh and William Murphy.
Type of wedding ceremony and reception We had a traditional Catholic wedding ceremony was in St Mary’s Church Dingle and it was officiated by a family friend, Fr. Jim Sheehy. Our reception was held in Ballyseede Castle, Tralee. We didn’t stick with an exact theme but we did incorporate a lot of our interests and memories into our special day. Number of guests We had 211 guests sit down for dinner.
Best thing about the day It is the one day that you will have all your family and friends who you love in the one room, we just loved having everyone around us. If I had to pick a favourite moment, I would have to say it was walking down the aisle. It is an overwhelming feeling of joy and happiness!
day went by so fast and at least you will be able to look back and see the whole day over and over again. It was a very long day, we were up at 7am and I was so excited I didn’t eat much breakfast, I would advise to try and have a good breakfast or have something throughout the day. Also, for the girls, I would definitely recommend doing hair and make up trials. You don’t have time on the morning to be trying out different styles and looks! It was so nice to sit and relax and know exactly what look you were going for! We didn’t book to go on honeymoon until January and we are now glad that we got some extra time with our guests after the wedding as we had a lot of people travel from overseas.
Worst thing about the day We were very unlucky with the weather throughout our whole weekend. It was grey skies, raining and windy. We couldn’t even walk up the main steps of Dingle Church and we had to use the side door. It did clear up a little bit when we got to Tralee and it did keep all our guests together indoors so I guess it wasn’t too bad after all! Anything you would change I wouldn’t change a thing, everything worked out perfectly and any mishaps that did happen were very minor and were easily fixed unbeknownst to everyone! There are so many aspects of the day that are out of your control. You spend so much time worrying that certain parts might go wrong so put your trust in your venue and your suppliers, they have the experience!` Any tips for future brides and grooms I would definitely recommend getting a videographer. The Wedding Ring An Old Tradition
The ring is the most enduring symbol of marriage. Its pursuit and eventual purchase play a major part in run up to a wedding, and during the marriage ceremony itself the exchange of rings is the moment around which everything else revolves. The ancient Egyptians began the practice using rings made from twisted reeds and rushes from the banks of the Nile. With no beginning or end the ring was seen as the symbol of eternity and the man placed it over his wife’s finger as a sign that he trusted her to keep a good home. The third finger was chosen because of the belief that a vein ran directly from that finger to the heart, the Romans later called it the vena amoris, the vein of love. The Romans themselves used iron to make rings while later gold became the preferred choice. The wedding ring became the opulent expression of love with the addition of gemstones in Medieval times, while later in Renaissance Italy highly ornate silver bands were the order of the day. In the eighteenth century, the distinguished man of letters Samuel Johnson referred to the wedding ring as “a circular instrument placed upon the noses of hogs and the fingers of women to restrain them and bring them into subjection. Thankfully this attitude no longer prevails, although the poor hog may disagree. Today the wedding ring still pays centre stage with any amount of choice available. Here in West Kerry we have a number of excellent jewellers who will craft unique pieces for the occasion and thus continue a practice that goes back thousands of years to the banks of the Nile. On a wedding day the spotlight is understandably focused on the Bride and groom but one of the unsung hero’s of the day is surely the Best Man. He is tasked with numerous jobs, but the one that towers over everything else is “the speech”, it can lead to sleepless nights beforehand and no end of nerves on the day. So if you’ve been appointed to the exalted position of Best Man listen up: here’s a few tips to help you through the speech. 1. Keep in mind that the audience are on your side (and to be honest will laugh at the slightest of prompts). Nobody is there to give you a hard time. 2. Thank everyone for making it such a great occasion and mention the bride and groom’s parents by name 3. Take your time. One of the biggest mis- takes people can make is to fly through the speech just to get it over and done with. This is a guaranteed way to make it fall flat. Pause for laughs at the appropriate times and you’ll be surprised how easily they come. 4. Don’t drink beforehand. You’ll enjoy it all the more afterwards. 5. Do your research. Ask family members about the groom as a child or for any interesting stories. Maybe try googling the date of the wedding to see if there was some event in history that you could use as a humourous comparison to the day’s proceedings 6. Know your audience. Keep in mind that the average wedding consists of a fairly mixed crowd. So steer a steady course. 7. Steer clear of “inside jokes”, by definition they exclude most people. 8. Memorise the first few lines at least. After that it’s OK to have a few notes to prompt you but raise your head and face the audience as much as you can. 9. Compliment the bride on how she looks. 10. Don’t mention former girlfriends 11. References to the groom should be an equal mix of friendly digs and compliments 12. Finish by getting everyone to raise their glasses in a toast to the bride and groom.

Má bhí clagarnach bháistí ann Oíche Coille bhí an lá maith go leor. Bhí gasraí ag tarrac ar an gceantar le sport agus cleachta a bheith acu. Thall is abhus bhaist cuid acu an Nollaig lé pínt mhóra bhlasta fé churán breá bán, cúrán a bhí ag imirt chleas ar lucht na bhféasóga móra. Bhí an saol mór ag fágaint slán ag an tsean- bhliain agus ag fáiltiú roimh an mbliain nua. Ní mar a chéile a ghlanann gach éinne a sháspan. Bhí lá maith ag na Dreoiliní idir óg agus iad siúd a bhí beagán níos sine. Is deas a fheiscint nách bhfuil na traidisún caite i dtraipisí. N’fheadar an rabhais ar dhuine acu siud a chaith dhoibh agus a thum iad féin sa bhfarraige Lá Nollag. Is dócha nár dhein sé aon díobháil do aon duine acu. Bhraitheadar ‘saor fiáin’ – seo cuid eile don gceiliúradh. Bhí duaiseanna breátha á dtarrach dóibh siúd a bhí ádhmharach agus go raibh an freagra ceart acu ar na tómhaiseanna nó is dócha gur cirte na cheisteanna, a bhí á gcur ag baill do fhoireann Raidío na Gaeltachta. Bhí daoine fillte ar an bhfód dúchais le bheith lena muintir don Nollaig agus a thuilleadh fós le freastal ortha siúd a fuair ‘Cuireadh na Nollag’. Is mó scéal seóigh a chloisfeá mar an fear a dúirt le cainteoir líofa Gaolainne, ‘tá Gaolainn níos fearr agamsa ná mar atá agatsa, ach ná labhraim í’.
Trump ….Agus Mheas pobal Shasana agus na Breataine Bige gur cheart an ceangal leis an Aontacht Eorpach a scor. Tá san déanta agus níl fhios ag aon duine conas mar a bheidh. Measann na Sasanaigh nár cheart go mbeadh aon duine ag cur iachall ortha glacadh le ordaithe ón AE. Bhí Albain go láidir ar shon leanúint leis an gceangal agus pobal na Sé Chontae. Is deacair a dhéanamh amach mar go dtuigeann Páirtí Caomhach na Breataine go bhfuil dearmad déanta acu ach glac leis go bhfuil éadan dána ar an daoine seo agus déanfaidh siad iarracht ar é a bheith acu ina ghruth agus ina mheadhg. Ní ró-fholláin atá cúrsaí againn féin. Táimíd ag cur go láidir in aghaidh an beartais airgead nó cáin ná raibh díolta mar ba cheart ag chomhlachtaí Meiriceánacha anseo a chur ar ceal. Ní theastaíonn an t-airgead uainn! Ní theastaíonn ón saol poilitíochta anseo an gumh a chur ar na Meiriceánaigh - más fíor beidh Trump ag iarraidh gur i Meiriceá a fhanach aon airgead cánach a bheadh le díol ag comhlachtaí Meiriceánacha mar shampla in Éirinn. Tá súil againn ná scaipfidh an phraisigh. Iarsma An mó duine agaibh gur cuireadh iarsma air agus nár íoc aistí? An mó duine a bhuail an bholóig ar an ndoras iata agus a fhógair an gorta agus an gála go dtí [Fút féin áit a roghnú]. Is cuimhin liom fear a fhógair iad go tigh na mba. Séideadh an ceann do thigh na mba agus bhí gach dara bó ar lár sa sléibhte an bhliain sin. Thaínigh an magadh go leaba na dáiríre! An mó duine againn atá meáite béas mí-shláintiúil nó gránna tarcaisneach a chaitheamh uainn? Ní féidir leat ach do dhícheall a dhéanamh.
Cór Ó bhíomair ag caint cheanna bhí Coirm Ceoil sa Diseart sa Daingean ag an ngasra atá fé stiúir Gabor… Tá gaisce thar na bearta déanta ag Gabor. Bhí an Cór agus na Ceoltóirí go diail. Má bhí nóta amú ag duine nó dhó is deacair a thuiscint go mbeadh caighdeán chomh maith ag na daoine seo gur gnáth dhaoine ón bpobal iad. Is Ungárach Gabor a tháinig chugainn, ní ró fhada ó shoin. Tá árd mholadh ag dul do as a dhíograis a thuiscint agus a éifeacht as dhíorma breis agus leathchéad duine a mhúnlú go healaíonta taithneamhach. Bhí Danny Mac an tSíthigh ag aithris dán dá chuid agus Marcas Mac Dómhaill ag Aithris dáin ‘Oíche Nollag’ le Maire Mhac an t-Saoi.
Mar sin ní bheidh na ceisteanna ró chruaidh.
Má tá aon duine a thuilleann an gradam Pearsa na Bliana sa cheanntar ‘sé sin an fear óg Gabor….

Tips for Getting in Shape Eddie O’ Grady 1. Getting in shape for 2017? Start out slowly, build up slowly over weeks/months especially if you have been relatively inactive for years. This applies even more so as you get older. Your body needs time to adjust. Doing too much too soon is one of the biggest causes of injuries during training . 2. If you are using a particular brand of runners and have been happy with them, try and stick with that brand. Different trainer(runner) brands can have size and fitting differentials which can lead to injury, as the body tries to adapt to these changes . Also if somebody in a shop does a gait analysis and tells you that you are over-pronating, but you have been using a neutral runner all along with no problems, I would have a serious think before changing. This is another major cause of lower leg injuries(sudden change). Often it takes several weeks for the injury to manifest itself, so the person does not associate it with changes in their footwear. I have also seen it in bike fits where somebody was doing fine and some ''expert'' tells them something needs to be changed.....next they have an injury several weeks later. When you train, the body adapts to cope with the stress. If you change things it has to readapt so you have to give it time to readapt. Now obviously mixing stuff up in training to say hit all muscle groups is a good thing, but I think you know where I am coming from. ''Leave well enough alone'' as a general rule unless there are definite gain to be made by adjustment. Another thing the jumps out as a contributor to injuries is where seasoned marathoners are encouraged persuaded to include sprint/speed training. Here you are taking somebody who has adapted their bodies energy systems and slow twitch muscle fibres to maximise their aerobic potential, fired in somewhere and asked to activate fast twist fibres and anaerobic energy systems they have been using minimally with little chance given to the body to adapt. In these situations it is usually the hamstrings that suffer, 34 West Kerry Live
3. Those two little extra holes at the top of your running shoes or hiking boots, the two you probably have ignored for years are there for a reason. They are there to lock in and secure your foot during running/walking etc. and can help prevent conditions like plantar fasciitis and tendonopathies during training. Google how to tie them up properly on youtube. 4. If you get a free spinal assessment off somebody as a ''special offer'', especially if you had no injury as such to begin with and you are told you need say twenty adjustments over something like an eight week period, costing several hundred euro, I would be very skeptical, especially if you are not really given a chance to back out. Tell them you will have a think about it and that you will get back to them. Once you are out of the clinic the pressure is off. Call me skeptical but there is nothing really for ''free'' these days in the world. Everybody has little aches and pains now and then, especially as they get older. Often one or two sessions where a little time is taken loosening out muscles etc. of a client along with one or two manipulations at the end of a treatment session can work wonders, rather than weeks of 5 min treatments, several times a week. Generally speaking you should be getting more relief from session to session. 5. Nowhere has it been scientifically proven that orthotics help with low back pain or neck pain. Often patients believe they have worked for these conditions, not because the orthotics have worked but because the condition itself has eased with time, ie. the body has healed itself. Also If you have been say running for years with few issues, you may just have an injury that needs treatment and not need a pair of orthotics. You were fine all along, why do you suddenly need orthotics? Just because you have flat feet or high arches does not mean you need orthotics either. There are plenty top athletes with flat feet or high arches who don't wear orthotics and have no issues. As I have stated above the body has a wonderful ability to adapt. Orthotics can be beneficial for certain lower body conditions(from knee down), but they are often oversold for monetary gain. Finally the more you pay for an orthotic does not necessarily make it better, even though people seem to have that perception. Basi-
cally an orthotic is like a good supportive insole which by tilting the angle under the foot fractionally, can help take the stress/pressure off an overused tendon or certain areas of the foot ie. metatarsals,. 6. Chondroitin , glucosamine, green muscle extract for your joints....No scientific evidence whatsoever. You might as well be flushing your money down the toilet. The supplement industry is making millions out of gullible people for years. If you do proper research in proper scientific journals you will see most supplements have no proper studies backing them up. Eat a healthy balanced diet: meat, fish, dairy, cereals , fruit and veg, nuts etc. That and moderate exercise is your best track to health for the new year. Have a great 2017 Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. On Asssignment in Dingle Michelle Heimerman It's New Years Eve, and rather than ringing in 2017 with close friends I've been celebrating with for nearly twenty years at one of our Brooklyn apartments, I've decided to travel to Dingle a few days earlier than planned to watch the fireworks, join in the parade and have a pint of Guiness with new friends. As the Photo Editor of Saveur Magazine, a food and travel publication based in New York, I spend my days producing photoshoots in far off corners of the world, from Western China to Patagonia, and everywhere in between. When Dingle, Ireland was added on my to-do list, the descriptions of dramatic landscapes, great food, and lovely people caught my attention as I decided I would go myself to capture the essence of this place in photos. It’s a difficult task to truly represent a town that’s steeped in such history when you only have a few days. You have to really time everything just right. It’s about capturing those waves crashing over the rocks with the Blasket Islands in the distance while the sunlight highlights the tips ever so perfectly. It’s about being at the right place at the right time to get out on the fisherman’s boat where chefs source the ingredients for that evening’s dishes. Or popping into Curran’s because you have an extra few minutes and you’re able to record some amazing music casually performed while sitting at the bar with a pint. One man mentioned Bob Dylan’s song, Twist of Fate, yesterday. “I have the belief you’re in certain places and you don’t know why you’re there,” he told me. And while I’ve come to Dingle on assignment, it’s all those in between moments, unexpected encounters, that make this so much more than that. Beyond my shot list, it’s the people of this community that really define just how special of a place Dingle really is. Michelle Heimerman is the Photo Editor of Saveur Magazine, a food and travel publication based in New York. Saveur are currently working on a feature on the Dingle Peninsula and how it has become a food destination. The article is due for release in early Spring. Michelle has spent the last week in Dingle taking pictures for the article and producing short video pieces for their website. Saveur’s has a circulation in excess of 325,000 and Saveur.com draws nearly 2 million unique visitors monthly. West Kerry Live 35
Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Camp rang in 2017 peacefully and said goodbye to a year of mixed fortunes, family joys new life welcomed and sad and unexpected partings. A Happy and Peaceful 2017 1916-2016 In April, Camp Community Council marked the 1916 – 2016 centenary commeration by the raising of flags in the community sports field and unveiling a stone to celebrate community volunteers and burying a time capsule with momentos from all community organisations in a memorial garden. The 1916 proclamation was read and in the Old School, local historians delivered a wonderful presentation of the history of that period and an exhibition of 1916 memorabilia was also put on display in the Old School over the commemorative weekend. Hands Across The Ocean And Enterprise Connections 1916 -2016 In March 2016 Michael Dorgan Video Production and Denis Herlihy facilitated a cyber connection across the miles to San Francisco. Camp children supported by Bríd Brosnan presented a wonderful artistic wall collage and along with music, poetry, song and dance, one hundred years was marked in a very special way and grateful acknowledgement to the courtesy and support of Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne and Pádraig Feirtear whose technology enabled the link. Breda O Dwyer CEED IT Tralee promoted enterprise connections and Brigid O Connor and NEWKD and Kerry Co. Council publicised and promoted the event. Camp Community Council Ltd. At a special meeting of Camp Community Council Ltd. on Friday 30th December organised to address urgent community sportsfield business, Chairman Eugene Finn opened the meeting observing one minutes silence in memory of the late Vincent O’Driscoll, Curradubh, Camp and on behalf of all of the members of the Council expressed deepest sympathy to the O’Driscoll family on the sad and untimely death of Vincent who passed to his eternal reward so suddenly and unexpectedly. The Council gratefully acknowledged Vincent’s voluntary work, contribution and support of all Community Projects down through the years. Rest in Peace. Thank You Thank you to all who supported our Annual Community Christmas Walk on Wednesday 28th December and to all who supported Martin Quirke’s Annual Reindeer Run on 27th
December, the proceeds of the two events amounted to €1,000 towards The Camp Community Sports Development Fund. Thanks also to The Church of Ireland Committee, Kilgobbin who donated E150.00 proceeds of their Annual Harvest Thanksgiving to Camp Community Council Ltd. towards village enhancement, flowers baskets etc. Camp Christmas Day Swim A large crowd turned up at Garrahies Gap, Camp on Christmas morning to take part in the Camp Christmas Day Swim. And all to support and raise funds for Metastatic Breast Cancer Research. Afterwards Martin served up the Mulled wine to warm us up. €1300 was raised. Bunny O Donnell thanked everybody for their support. And well done to Bunny too for organising the event. Obituary The news of the sudden death of Vincent O’Driscoll, Curradubh, Camp recently was received with great shock and sadness in our community. Vincent was the second youngest of a family of 11 children born to the late Pa and Maureen O’Driscoll and like all of his brothers, he shared a great love of football and sports, playing with his local club Annascaul in his youth and later in New York where he worked in his younger days. Vintage cars, crosswords and family photos and a lorry depicting his business were brought to the altar by his grandchildren. Vincent’s son Brendan Bawnie R.I.P. a talented and skilled sportsman in all codes predeceased him in October 2011 and Bawnies sudden passing at such a young age, only 28 years was a source of great sorrow to Vincent and to all the family. After Mass, Vincent’s eldest son, Jamie paid a moving tribute to Vincent, a loving and caring father, husband, grandfather, a gentleman in every sense of the word. Jamie thanked everybody in the community for their support and help and alongside Jamie his Uncle Tommy Doyle, our own former Kerry footballer also expressed sincere thanks and gratitude to everybody, praising the community, all those who helped out at the house and all those who travelled and dropped everything to be with the family and support them on this very sad occasion for all the family. Vincent was laid to rest in Ballinknockane Cemetary, Camp following Requiem Mass at St. Marys Church, Camp celebrated by Fr. Gerry Keane PP. who too delivered a lovely homily about the life and times of Vincent. Aughacasla school children and teachers and Annascaul GAA and Coiste na n-Og flanked his coffin in a guard of honour at St. Marys Church Camp before and after Mass and again accompanied the cortege to the
cemetary. The wake and funeral on both days was huge and representative of the esteem in which Vincent was held in our community and beyond. Vincent, Ní bheid do leithéid arís ann. Go nDéana Dia Trócaire ar a anam dílis. Sympathy is extended to his wife Mary, sons, Jamie, Vincie, Chris and Michaél, daughter Aisling, sisters, Peggy, Mary, Bernadette and Anne, brothers, Gene, Joe, Michael, Seamus and Patrick, grand children, nieces and nephews and extended family and many friends and neighbours. Vincent was predeceased by his son Brendan Bawnie and his brother Séan. Thank You The O’Driscoll family Curradubh, Camp wish to express their grateful thanks and appreciation to all who attended Vincent O Driscoll’s wake and funeral, those who travelled long distances and the community of neighbours, friends and family who helped them out in any way and supported them in their very sad bereavement. May Vincent Rest In Peace.

A succession of wides from the West left them scoreless well into the first half. However, a speculative ball into the square by Jack Nix eluded the East’s defence and ended up in the net. Tomás Connor added to the tally with an excellent pointfrom far out on the left wing. Shane Hennessy and Jordan Quirke were controlling affairs in midfield for the East, ensuring that their team led by 1-5 to 1-3 at half time. On the resumption, good work by Jimmy O’ Grady led to another point from Tomás Connor. A goal by Adam O’ Donnell in the 17th minute increased the prospect of an exciting finish. The East, however, pulled further ahead four minutes later with a goal from Jason Griffin, following another good run by Alan Fitzgerald. Further points from
AntoKelliher, Alan Fitzgerald, Brandon Hoare and Maurice Slattery ensured that the East held out for their long awaited win. Final score 2-11 to 2-07.At the final whistle John Joe O’ Connor presented the Timmy O’ Connor Memorial Trophy to the winning captain, Brendan O’ Connor, who had travelled from Sydney for the occasion.Congratulations to all players and team mentors on an eagerly contested, entertaining and, at all times, sporting occasion. Teams: East: Eoin O’ Shea, James O’ Connor, John Fitzgerald, Finn McKenna, Enda Whelan, Joe Scully, Colm Sills, Jordan Quirke (0-1), Shane Hennessy (0-1), Jason Griffin (1-1), Alan Fitzgerald (1-3), Maurice Slattery (0-1), Tomas Butler (Patrick O’ Donoghue), Alan Quirke, AntoKelliher (0-5).

Question What are my consumer rights when I buy something in the sales? Can I return sales items? Answer Your consumer rights during a sale are exactly the same as at any other time of the year. Your rights do not change just because you bought the item in a sale. Goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, a replacement or a refund. If there is a fault with goods that you bought at full price and are now on sale at a reduced price, you are entitled to a refund of the full price (if the shop is willing to offer a refund). Shop notices such as “No Refunds” or “No Exchanges” do not limit your rights, if you have a complaint about faulty items. However, you are not entitled to a refund because you change your mind about something you have bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. Many shops do allow you to exchange goods that you have had second thoughts about, but this is at their discretion. It is a good idea to check the shop’s refund policy before buying anything. You should always keep your receipts as proof of purchase and the price paid. This does not necessarily have to be the shop receipt. You could show your credit or debit card statement if you used one or any other documentation that proves it was purchased.
