The talk will cover the interaction of the Knights of Kerry with Dingle from the earliest times until their departure at the end of the 18th century. It will concentrate particularly on the 17th century and will present some newly researched archival material relating to the first half of that century; it will then move on to the 18th century and cover in some detail the acrimonious breach between the 16th and 17th Knights; it will conclude with a summary of what became of the Knights after they left Dingle.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 11th July will be the Ianian drama “The Salesman”. The film is about a married couple who perform Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman on stage, when the wife is assaulted. Her husband attempts to determine the identity of the attacker, while she struggles to cope with post-trauma stress. The Salesman takes an ambitiously complex look at thought-provoking themes. The following week on Tuesday 19th July the feature will be the Finnish comedy-drama “The Other Side Of Hope”. The film which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film follows a traveling shirt salesman in Helsinki who quarrels with his wife and leaves her. He decides to leave the sales-business and goes for a long poker tour. With the money he wins he buys a restaurant where his three employees are first skeptical. The business doesn’t go well. He hires a Syrian refugee who is due to be sent back to Aleppo. “ The Other Side Of Hope” is a deceptively simple but powerful experience.

Féile an Phráta Elaine Lyne I am here thinking to myself every year I seem to be of the notion … sure July is a long way off when suddenly here we are … the year has turned so by now I am sure you have all tasted the new spuds. The experts say you can’t beat them. I took myself and my shadow off to the first of the parish heats in Dún Chaoin last weekend and Tigh Kruger was a hive of activity – the local rivalry was great to see. You simply can’t beat the small communities for their spirit and support for one another. Fair play do Fionnán (an Eagarthóir) all the kids got a feast full of spuds and gobbled them up delightfully. Mention was also given to Peigi Mistéal who passed away earlier in the Spring, an avid supporter of the Spud festival but especially in Dún Chaoin. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. It ended in a tie breaker with the judges being called back to the table which saw Nora Dalaigh winning this heat. Comhgáirdeas Nora. As per below the rest of the parish heats are taking place over the next week or so kicking off this Friday night in Ballyferriter and Ventry. Bigí ann más féidir. Us young mothers are always searching for something new to put on the table and as I browse I’ve come across lots of interesting spud recipes so if you’ve a good recipe under your belt why not join in the fun and bring along your dish to the Plata Práta Competition sponsored by Bord Bia. Give us a buzz to register your entry and we will assign you a time and info on dropping your dish off. Bring the kids and let them get their faces painted. Best child who arrives with their face painted or gets painted at the Craobh will be heading off for a feast of ice cream generously sponsored by Murphy’s. An Pláta Práta kicks off at 4pm on Sunday 16th and from there straight into the Craobh to see who will be crowned Laoch an Phráta for 2017. 6 West Kerry Live

Farming News
Louis Murchan
Would You Pass A Cross Compliance On Farm Inspection Every farm dreads that phone call from a strange number and at the other end of the phone is a Department of agriculture inspector. “You have being chosen for a 1% Cross Compliance “those dreaded words that sends a shiver up every farmers back. These inspections can be a serious worry for a lot of farmers and can cause sleepless nights. I want to show how this worry can be avoided and it’s not as bad as you might think. What I am seeing over and over again is the same areas of noncompliance on farms and with a little effort the most of these can be avoided and penalties avoided or reduced in a lot of cases. I had a phone conversation with an inspector recently and he pointed out to me the main problem areas that they are seeing on farms. The department of Agriculture inspector is only out to do job and they will work with the farmer in most cases and if the farmer is making a good effort to do the thing correct that will mean a lot. Top 5 Areas Of Non Compliance 1.
Cattle identification and registration
2. Nitrates 3.
Sheep identification and registration
4.
Chemicals and storage
5.
Good agricultural and environmental condition
Look at the following headings on the farm and go through them one by one and the first thing that you have to do is identifying the problems and then get them sorted. The main thing to remember here is that by carrying out this exercise we are trying to protect our Farm payments which are vitally important to every farmer. Cattle Idenification: Make sure all your calves are registered on time and all movements and deaths are recorded. Have all animals with two tags in their ears. Go around the herd and make a list of all the cattle on the herd that are missing a tag and get them ordered immediately. Make sure that the number of cattle on the departments system matches the amount of cattle in the herd. Make sure the number of cattle cards matches the number of cattle in the herd. Useful Tips - Every farmer should sign up for the online herd register as soon as possible as this does away with the Blue Book Go around the herd and make a list of all the cattle on the herd that are missing a tag and get them ordered immediately. Nitrates: Make sure that you have sufficient winter storage for animal manures. Make sure that you keep within the stocking limits Make sure that you keep to the spreading dates for fertiliser and animal manures Make sure to keep to the buffer strips Useful Tips - Spend a bit of time with your advisor on these items and he/she can work out the first two and tell you the relevant dates and buffer widths to be left. Sheep Tagging Flock registers not kept up to date is a serious problem on all sheep farms. I know myself the last thing you want to do after working hard all day is to start filling in details to your flock register. Get in the habitat of filling in the flock register as soon as the transaction takes place. Put in your sheep and make sure they are all tagged and that you write down all the tag numbers. Make sure these same numbers are in your flock register Make sure that all the sheep census details are filled into the front of your flock register. 10 West Kerry Live
Fill in all movement from farm to farm, marts, factories and animal deaths. Useful Tip - When filling out the flock register you don’t have to put every number in the book just the dispatch sheet number that is at the top of the sheet and that will suffice. Chemicals And Storage The use of chemicals on farm is getting more and more of a problem and we all know now at this stage that before November 2015 every farmer that has a sprayer has to have completed a fetac level 5 courses in order to use that sprayer. If you are caught after this date using a sprayer without the relevant course you will incur a penalty in your payments. The reason for all this regulations is coming from a misuse of chemicals and some people cutting corners Make sure you have a lockable store with the appropriate warning sign on it Have a bucket of sand beside this store in case of spillages Keep a record of all spray bought in and was they are applied and the rate etc. Useful Tip - An old chest freezer is ideal for a spray cabinet as long as you fit a lock. Keep the costs down. Fill out the spray records the day that you get the spray and use them don’t leave it to another day Good Agricultural And Environmental Condition(Gaec) Don’t damage land in the winter time Keep your hedges maintained on the farm Keep the weeds on the farm maintained by chemical or mechanical means Keep your boundaries stock proof Don’t remove a hedge on the farm without planting similar length of hedge at any location on the farm first. Graze all land properly Useful Tip -Don’t out winter cattle too late and house them by the end of October or earlier. Make sure you put sheep to your mountain land to graze every year. All of the above are the main problem areas that keep coming up on farms year on year. If every farmer downloads the cross compliance manual and goes through the check lists on these headings it will be possible to reduce the problem areas. It’s a matter of protecting your income and taking the worry out of farm inspections. The Africa Agri-Food Development Programme This is an initiative to support partnerships between Irish and African agri-food companies and is joint initiative by the two Departments to support partnerships between Irish and African agri-food companies. This AADP can harness the knowledge and expertise of the Irish agri-food industry and, in partnership with African companies, deliver transformative change in the lives of African communities. The programme, which is part of Ireland’s overseas development cooperation programme, will support agri-food business partnerships in all African countries in which the Government has an embassy - Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. It builds on the previous African Agri-food Development Fund and is open to Irish agri-food companies, with possible funding of up to €250,000 in total per company. Loving the Skin You’re In! Irene Ní Fhlannúra There is nothing quite like the Summer holidays to expose every blemish, blotch or bump on the skin. Although the sun has been a little shy lately, this warm, humid weather has us dressed down to our drawers and wishing we had begun a good skin regime months ago. No need to don the head-to-toe kaftan just yet - there is still plenty to do to get your skin glowing with health this summer and beyond! It is widely accepted in natural health care practices around the world that the skin reflects what is happening inside of us. Our intestinal health is often mirrored on the surface of our skin yet our innards are often the last port of call when skin problems arise. The skin is the largest of the body’s organs and not only does it keep our insides in, it is also a major detoxification outlet that enables the elimination of waste products and toxins safely and efficiently from our bodies. Many skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and many forms of dermatitis are not necessarily just skin problems but may be a signal of poor intestinal health and sluggish detoxification function, most commonly in the liver and bowel. The quickest way to improve intestinal health is to address the burden of toxins in the gut - whether they come from the food and fluids you consume or whether they are generated within the gut through an imbalance of good and bad organisms within the intestines, or produced because of poor digestion and food intolerances. Whole, plantbased food not only maintains great gut health - their vitamins, minerals and oils are also beneficial to the skin. Antioxidants such as vitamin A (as betacarotene), C and E can curb the damage caused by free radicals that are responsible for premature aging and skin damage. These vitamins are readily available in fresh fruit such as colourful berries, citrus fruits, kiwis and pineapples. Brightly coloured vegetables such as tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, kale and spinach also deliver great antioxidant power. Seeds, nuts and avocado are packed with vitamin E in particular - sunflower seeds, almonds as well as our faithful greens - spinach and chard. Oils rich in vitamin E such as wheatgerm oil and sea buckthorn oil are often recommended for healing scars and burns on the skin - such is the power of vitamin E. The best way to get plenty of antioxidants in your diet is to have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds everyday. Nature presents some of the most antioxidant rich plants in attractive colours to entice us to eat them so turn your plate into a rainbow of colour and you’ll be on the right track! Good quality, clean water is crucial for skin, liver and bowel health. Herbal teas which are particularly cleansing to both the inside and outside of the body include nettle, burdock, dandelion, fennel, anise, liquorice and peppermint. Not only can you drink herbal teas but many of these can also be used to cleanse and tonify the skin when used topically and are a lot more effective than some of the chemical-laden skin preparations on the market these days. It is estimated that the average person is exposed to over 500 chemicals through grooming products and household cleaning products every day. There is no doubt that everyone can make a significant reduction in unnecessary toxic exposure by choosing more natural body care items and cleaning products in the home. Much of what we put on our skin can penetrate through the skin and enter the body. This is not surprising when you think that many drugs such as nicotine, hormone therapy and pain relief can be administered through skin patches. Most alarming is the level of toxic chemicals found in sunscreen lotion, gels and sprays. Despite the ongoing campaign to wear sunscreen, the incidences of skin cancer in Ireland continue to increase. Recent studies in cancer research have demonstrated that the lack of sunlight and vitaNatural Health Treatments

min D is a significant factor in the onset and progression of many cancers including skin cancer. A typical sunscreen lotion of 15SPF can block the skin’s ability to convert the sun’s rays to Vitamin D by 99%. Coupled with a cocktail of chemicals in most sunscreens that penetrate well beyond the outer layer of the skin, perhaps there is more to skin cancer than pointing the finger at the sun! Suffice to say, it is never a good idea to allow the skin to burn - common sense, a hat and a long-sleeved shirt might be a safer option! The walk will leave from the Aqua Dome car park at 10:00am (walkers are urged to please use the Brandon car park for parking facilities). This walk raises much needed funds for Recovery Haven cancer support house and people are asked to walk on the day or to support a walker so we can raise as much as we can for this fantastic charity.
& BROCCOLI
The walk started in 2010 and has grown from strength to strength since, raising a total so far in excess of €70,000 for local cancer charities. The name of the walk has been amended this year to include the late Mike Deane who sadly passed away in March. He was a much loved Castlegregory native who was a key contributor and heavily involved with the walk over the years. This year the walk will be in memory of both Mike Deane and Jamie Wrenn. Buses on the day will be provided by Mike’s family. He will be very sadly missed, Castlegregory has lost a true friend and he will never be forgotten. There will be a bus hop on/off facility en route and 3 refreshment stops in Curaheen, The Junction Bar, Camp and finishing with a barbeque and live music in Maurice Fitzgearld's pub, Castlegregory. Annascaul Sports Hall & the Pole to Pole Run At the beginning of 2005, a group of naive dreamers got together and decided it would be a great idea to build a state of the art sports and amenity hall in Annascaul – a place where young and old could play, laugh, cry, have fun, win and lose, a place where the school children could do P.E., where a Naoínra could operate, the youth club could run, clubs could be formed and all sorts of sports be played.
might realise how much the hall has benefitted our community and that it is deserving of all of our support. On behalf of the committee, a big thank you to everybody who has helped us on this journey and we look forward to seeing you on August 5th. - Annascaul Sports Hall Committee
No matter there was no money, no plan, no site and most importantly no notion of the struggle that lay ahead – if we knew then what we know now, it probably would never have happened. But happen it did, and now, 12 years and much tears, grey hair, stress and head scratching later it stands as an essential part of the fabric of Annascaul. A very hard-working and enthusiastic committee was formed and the work began in earnest. Firstly a site was identified adjacent to the school and sports field and the owner agreed to sell at a reasonable price. The local G.A.A provided the access we needed and also some ground. A plan was drawn up and costed – much to our dismay, the estimate including the site was in the region of €600 to €700 thousand! No bother we thought – we’ll do a bit of fundraising and research. Grant aid would be available but would have to be matched by our own funds – here’s where the generosity of the local community came into play. After a few information evenings, leaflet drops and much persuasion, €120,000 was pledged to be collected over 3 years. The highways and byways of the county were traversed to sell tickets for a car raffle - this raised €80,000. A bank loan was secured for €80,000 with a ten year repayment plan.
Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh starting the Roadrace
A myriad of other fundraisers were undertaken – a night at the dogs, Christmas day swims, collecting on the Wren, talent competitions, table quizzes, bag packs and our 5K & 10K Pole to Pole Walk / Runs. The total cost of the project ran to €670,000 of which we received €350,000 in grant aid.
The hall opened in December 2008 just in time for Scoil Bhreac Chluain’s Christmas concert and since then has been utilised by all sections of the community on a constant basis. The Naoínra is there since the beginning and a separate childcare facility has recently begun. The Youth Club runs throughout the Winter months. Scoil Bhreac Chluain use it on a daily basis, be it for P.E., concerts or assemblies. Indoor soccer, badminton, football and basketball are played - indeed, Annascaul now has one of the most successful juvenile badminton clubs in the county. The hall location, with ample parking, adjoining the sports field and the school makes it a central hub of the community. The debt now stands at €24,000. Servicing this debt along with day to day running costs means that we still have to fundraise. This year we are staging our 4th Pole to Pole run and walk on Saturday August 5th at 11am, with registration at the hall from 8.30am. This has become a great social occasion with a fun get together afterwards for a treat and a chat. To make this years event as beneficial as possible, we would like everyone to participate in some shape or form – run, walk, crawl or just call for a cup of tea, buy a t-shirt or simply make a contribution. Maybe if we cast our minds back to 2005 before it became a reality, we 14 West Kerry Live

Lemon Tart Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School There are a few desserts that I believe that everyone should have in their repertoire. One of them is a really good lemon tart. This is a classical French lemon tart, if you have been to France you will see these in the window of every bakery ranging in sizes. It will suit any lunch and especially any meal where you have served fish as a main course. Try it and you will see that with a little practice, you will be able to make this perfectly. Ingredients For the Pastry
For the Filling
400g flour
lemon filling for a 23cm tart tin
200g butter
5 free-range eggs
100g caster sugar
125ml double cream
1 egg
225g caster sugar 4 lemons, juice and zest
Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC For the pastry Mix the flour and butter together until it comes together like a sandy texture.
Put all of the filling ingredients into a bowl and whisk together until smooth. Carefully pour the filling mixture into the cooled baked pastry case. Carefully transfer to the oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes or until just set but with a slight wobble in the middle. The filling will be soufflé-like when it comes out of the oven, but will sink down when it has cooled down. Leave to cool a little, or completely, then remove from the tin and transfer to a serving plate and dust with icing sugar to serve. Enjoy!!!

Mix the egg and sugar to help dissolve. Add this to the flour and butter and mix until it comes together. Wrap in cling film and allow this to rest for about 20 minutes. Roll out the pastry very thinly on a floured work surface until just a little bigger than the size of a 23cm, loose-bottomed tart. Line the tart tin, letting the extra pastry overhang over the sides of the tin. To bake the pastry blind Line the tin with greaseproof pastry and fill with baking beans. Blind bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven until pale golden-brown. Remove from the oven and remove the baking beans and paper. Carefully trim the excess pastry off around the sides using a sharp knife. Return the empty pastry shell to the oven for another 10-12 minutes or until it is completely dry. Set aside to cool. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 170ºC.

Mass at the Ancient Ballintaggart Graveyard Fr Jim Sheehy On the evening of June 29th Mass was celebrated at the ancient graveyard enclosure on the Cnockeen in Ballintaggart. Although rain was threatening about 60 turned up only to be greeted at the beginning of Mass with a nasty shower driven by a stiff breeze which persisted for most of the celebration. However in spite of the conditions, in that beautiful but exposed location, the spirits of those attending were not dampened; in fact, a very relaxed, but prayerful, atmosphere prevailed. There was, I felt, a deep sense of the occasion as this was, to my knowledge, the first Mass celebrated there in living memory and probably for many centuries. Within the enclosure is a collection of nine Ogham stones, which, if only they could speak would, I believe, have a fascinating story to tell. A story that would take us back well into pre Christian, Pagan times, when this and the adjoining elevated ground known as the Cnockeen was first set aside as a sacred place of worship and a burial ground where the early inhabitants of pre-Celtic and early Irish times worshipped their gods and honoured their dead. The stones lying there are not only part of the story but they speak to us of an important chapter within that story, when that amazing transition from paganism to Christianity took place. Until late in the 4th Century AD The Celts communicated and passed on their traditions exclusively by word of mouth; their first written words appeared on stone. So it is true to say that the first words of the Irish language, inscribed here in coded form, were written on stone. This form of writing continued into the 6th Century at which time the written language, using the Roman alphabet had advanced to book and manuscript form. Those two centuries of ogham writing, however, are important in so far as they, in a sense, form a bridge between pagan and Christian Ireland; highlighted in the fact that some of the stones have crosses inscribed on them while others do not. So the early Irish Church in its wisdom did not deny or destroy its pagan past but Christianised it and built upon it and indeed was greatly enriched by it. That the early Christians should accept and adopt these pagan sacred sites for Christian worship and burial might seem strange to some today, but certainly not to the great St Augustine who said: “That which is called the Christian Religion existed among the ancients, and never did not exist, from the beginning of the human race until Christ came in the flesh, at which time true religion, which already existed began to be called Christianity.” With that unbroken link with antiquity we were standing on privileged, indeed on holy ground. However, apart from what meets the eye there seems to be little evidence of the great change and transformation that took place leading to what became known as the Golden age of Irish Christianity when just two centuries after the coming of Christianity Ireland became known and renowned among the nations as the Island of Saints and Scholars. One might imagine or speculate that in this enclosure we were standing at the heart and pinnacle of what from early Christian times would have developed into a thriving medieval monastic community with its own school and trades workshop. In fact there may be some evidence of this hidden within the inscription on one of these those Ogham stones. In his book Romantic Hidden Kerry T, F. O’Sullivan, quotes the renowned antiquarian and decipherer of the Ogham inscription, Dr Charles Groves, who talks about this “remarkable collection” of ogham stones in the Ballintaggart enclosure, claimed that the inscription on one of the stones is a dedication to the great Northumbrian Saint and Scholar Eadfrid. Eadfrid was believed to have spent 6 years studying in Ireland in the 7th Century before returning to the great Irish Monastery of Lindisfarne where he became Abbot, Bishop and the scribe of the wonderful Lindisfarne Gospels which could be regarded as England’s equivalent to the Book of Kells. However, rather than a headstone Dr Graves suggests that the stone may have served as a pillow used by the scholar Eadfrid who could well have studied here. 18 West Kerry Live
While Archaeological Surveys conducted from the early 1800’s suggest that there was probably a Church or Monastic Site on these grounds, there seemed to be little evidence to substantiate that claim. According to the local folklore, however, there was a monastic site there but in the late 1700’s it had been completely cleared to provide for a local building project and some would claim that there is evidence of the monastic enclosure in the short stretch of wall on the top of Ballintaggart Road where it meets with the Main Rd. In itself the place name Ballintaggart, Baile an tSagairt, the townland of the priests, offers a vital clue to past history. All surveys, however, refer to the burial ground that extended onto the Cnockeen from the circular enclosure on the top as the burial place for the victims of a great battle fought in ancient times where 400 local men were believed to have been slaughtered; as the familiar saying goes “Do thit dha chéad Seán is dhá chéad Domnall idir bhéal an Traigh Bhig agus Lisín a Chomhraic.” An area, about a half mile in length that stretches from the Cnockeen to the Short Strand. Some of the surveys speculated that the battle may have been with foreign invaders, perhaps the Danes; as evidence of this a bronze axe was unearthed in Kennedy’s land Dun Síon many years ago, but, as the saying goes, one swallow doesn’t make a summer. The belief in the area is that, sometime in the distant past, a great faction fight took place between the Clan Domnall and the Clan Seán; others would say that it is only a fable, perhaps with some small basis in reality and that the extensive graves found on the Cnockeen were of members of the monastic and local community who died there since early times. What all surveys agree on, however, is that over recent centuries and later surveys suggest up to the 1940’s that the circular enclosure had served as a Ceallúnach, used by local families for the burial of unbaptised infants and to my knowledge there were at least two families present to honour a member who was buried there. One was a member of the O’Muirchearthaigh family, a brother of Mícheál and the other a member of the Quinn family also of Dun Síon. And it was especially to remember and honour those infants which the mercy of God and the faith of their parents had won for them a high place among the heavenly hosts, that we, in thanksgiving, celebrated the Mass of the Holy Angels. Some present even suggested that the wind and rain was evidence of their presence with us and around us. As Angels of God they are messengers and intermediaries between heaven and earth, powerful intercessors on our behalf, who always remain close and attached to their families. As I have said this is perhaps the first time in centuries that mass has been celebrated in this place and it is wonderful to think that we were through the Mass in communion with all those who since time immemorial have lived and died here and have been laid to rest on this sacred ground. Go dtuga Dia súaimneas, solas agus beatha síorraí doibh go léir. To finish I would like to thank all who attended and participated in the liturgy and who, in spite of the weather or perhaps because of the weather, created such a relaxed and prayerful atmosphere; no doubt those we had come to honour also played their part in that. I would like to thank Paudie Ahearn, who in his devotion to those little ones of God afforded us the opportunity and privilege to be there and thanks to Fr Joe and Cathy for their support and encouragement. A special thanks to Donal Moran for preparing the ground and welcoming us on to his land, as well as, to members of the OPW for doing a wonderful job in strimming and clearing the site for the celebration. Many have suggested that this should be an annual celebration and perhaps in time the history and full story of this holy place and sacred space, unknown to so many, even in the locality, will be uncovered.

A consultation process is currently ongoing to help form a language plan for Dingle so that the town can achieve official status as a Gaeltacht Services Town. As part of this process An Lab is seeking the opinions of townspeople regarding the use of Irish in the town and how best to advance this. To that end, short questionnaires and post boxes have been placed in the banks (AIB and Bank of Ireland) and the Credit Union. Keel GAA Seniors Keel 0-12 Lispole 0-12. While both teams will be happy not to have lost, the home team in particular will feel the more tangible disappointment as they had a gilt edged chance to win it with a very kickable free in stoppage time. And with this miss the referee Paul O'Sullivan whistled for full time leaving Lipole still undefeated in Div 4 of the County League. Keel were first to score through Gary Sayers from play and over the next 10 minutes both teams swapped scores with a pointed free from Gary Sayers and points from Cathal O'Sullivan and Mike Fitzgerald in reply for Lispole. The next quarter was dominated by Keel with points from Thomas Ladden, Aaron Cahillane and a free from Dylan Prendergast leaving Keel three ahead after 23 minutes. Lispole replied with points from Sean Nunan and Cathal O'Sullivan and as half time approached would have been reasonably happy to have limited the damage during Keel's period of dominance. The home team struck very quickly for the final scores of the half with another free from Dylan Prendergast and one from play from Terry O'Sullivan. Half time score was Keel 0-07 Lispole 0-04. After much fire and brimstone in the dressing room at half time, Lispole emerged with extreme determination and completely dominated the first 20 minutes of the second period. Cathal O'Sullivan became a one man scoring machine with 5 points on the bounce from the 34th minute to the 44th minute. Keel's solitary reply came from Luke Flynn and at this stage Keel were rocking. Their 3 point half time lead had been wiped out and they were being cleaned out in mid field. Two futher points from Mike Fitzgerald and Cathal O'Sullivan(who else) left Keel two points in arrears as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Thankfully for the local supporters a point from Shane Prendiville in the 51st minute seemed to right the ship and two further scores from Gary Sayers in the 53rd and 56th minute left the visitors trailing by a point. A soft enough free allowed Declan O'Sullivan to level the game and the game seemed destined to end honours even. Keel had one final attack and earned a free in from 35 metres which should have been scored but this would probably have been a bit harsh on Lispole.

Scorers Keel: Gary Sayers 0-5 (2 frees),Dylan Prendergast 0-2 frees, Shane Prendiville, Terry O'Sullivan, Thomas Ladden Aaron Cahillane & Luke Flynn 0-1 each. Lispole: Cathal O'Sullivan 0-8 (06 frees), Mike Fitzgerald 0-2, Sean Nunan and Declan O'Sullivan 0-1 each. The game also marked the welcome return of shane Prendiville who had be out with a long term injury. U12 The u-12s finished off their county league recently with a victory over Churchill resulting with them winning division 2 continuing on from winning div 4 in phase 1. This is a great achievement and the players and coaches have put in some hard work over the last few months, players and parents enjoyed some light refreshments after the game in the clubhouse. Thanks to the Anvil Bar for supplying some of the refreshments. Next up for the U12’s is the Mid Kerry Championship starting with a home tie against Glenbeigh on July 7th while the B team will play Laune Rangers on the same night at home

As you may know this year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Tomás Ághas. He was born in Kinard, Lispole in 1885 and subsequently joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Irish Volunteers. Ághas became a commandant of the Fingal Battalion of the Volunteers which mobilised in north Dublin and Meath during the Easter Rising in 1916. He led his unit at the Battle of Ashbourne in Meath and was the last of the Rising leaders to surrender on 29 April 1916. While in prison Ághas composed the poem ‘Let me carry your cross for Ireland, Lord’. In protest against the refusal of the authorities to grant him political status he went on hunger strike in Mountjoy Jail and while being force fed on 25 September he collapsed and died a few hours later. His body lay in state in the City Hall until his funeral on 30 September and an armed guard of uniformed Irish Volunteers kept vigil as thousands came to pay their respects. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery and his funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Dublin. Leabharlann An Daingin is proud to host an exhibition for 3 months opening on Monday 10 July at 10.00am that will display articles of Tomás Ághas memorabilia. Some of the items have undergone a conservation process and were formerly displayed in the library. The exhibition will also feature an audio-visual display and information panels giving background details on his life and achievements. Ná déan dearúd. Lig do scíth le Leabharlann Chiarraí. Glanteenassig Wood
As well as the 3 waymarked trails there is about 8 km of forest road in this block of forest. This provides the ideal location for a long hike or for a family cycle. Although remote, Glanteenassig is only about 6 km from the sandy beaches at Castlegregory thus providing the perfect diversion for the holiday maker on the days not suited to the beach or when one tires of sun and sand. To get away from it all there is no better place to spend a day or even an afternoon

Features: Picnic Site, Walking Trails, Viewing Points,Fishing Platforms, Waymarked Trails Activities: Walking/Hiking, Fishing Glanteenassig is a 450 hectare area of Coillte woodland, mountain, lake and peatland, situated in a sheltered valley among the Slieve Mish mountains. To reach it, the visitor must step off the beaten track, travel up the valley and feel the remoteness of the mountains. Behind the trees the area abounds with streams, lakes, waterfalls and dramatic cliffs which characterise this untamed landscape. The wood is approached through a small grove of beech between the entrance and a bridge that spans the Owencashla river. Just over the bridge is a car park. The forest, typical of those which were established in the 1950’s and 60’s consists mainly of sitka spruce and lodgepole pine. However, there are some pockets of silver fir, larch and beech in the more sheltered areas and some native species such as birch, alder and holly. As areas mature and are clearfelled much of the spruces are being replaced with larch, alder and mountain ash in keeping with the primeval forests that once colonised the area. The first opportunity to experience the beauty of Glanteenassig is about 1.2 km from the car park. Just after crossing a wooden bridge, take a left along the trail to the shore of Lough Slat. This quiet and serene lake sits below the imposing hill of Doon and the majestic rock face of Carrigaspanaig. This scene can be even more dramatic after heavy rain when “ a thousand wild fountains rush down to that lake from their home in the mountains ”. ( J.J Callinan ) It is easy to understand the origin of the name Glanteenassig or Gleann Tí an Easaigh which translates to the Valley of the Waterfalls. Back to the forest road and take the trail to the right which leads the visitor up along the bank of the river Owencashla and back on to the road again. Continue along the road to a T junction, take a left and after 100 metres you are on the shores of Lough Caum with a board walk right around the lake. This lake is a trout angler’s paradise. From here the landscape opens up to a 360° vista of mountain, forest, lake and valley. Retrace your steps from here back to the T junction and continue on over a ford on the infant river travelling east for about 600 26 West Kerry Live

The Geological Heritage of West Kerry
Fossils on the mythical mountain of Caherconree Patrick Wyse Jackson
in the stream beds that flow down the western edge of the mountain and come together as the Finglas River. Next time that you are climbing towards the top of Caherconree remember Cúchulainn who climbed to the fort when he wooed Bláthnat, the wife of Cú Roí, but also think about the extinct marine creatures that used to live in the area many millions of years before. Patrick Wyse Jackson is a frequent visitor to the Dingle Peninsula and teaches geology at Trinity College, Dublin.
One of the most rewarding views in the Dingle Peninsula is that from the fort at the top of Caherconree Mountain. One can look down the spine of the peninsula all the way to Dingle and beyond to the Blasket Islands, and also enjoy the magnificent mountains to the south on the Iveragh Peninsula. When you are walking anywhere on the Dingle Peninsula take a few minutes to consider the rocks that you are walking over. The area has a rich and varied geological foundation that has fascinated geologists for over two hundred years. Recently, a series of ten interpretative panels have been erected at various sites in West Kerry by Kerry County Council, in a scheme in association with the Heritage Council and the author of this article. It is hoped that this on-going series of articles on the ten sites will further encourage visits. The rocks that make up Caherconree Mountain date from a number of geological times. The oldest are from the periods called the Ordovician and Silurian and comprise mudstones and limestones that were deposited in a shallow ocean some 450 to 400 million years ago. Most of these rocks contain fossils: some resemble tiny pencil-like markings which are the remains of colonial animals called graptolites that floated in the surface waters, while others look like woodlice, but are in fact small arthropods called trilobites that scurried around the seabed or burrowed into sediment looking for food. Younger rocks include the purple-coloured Old Red Sandstone that was laid down during the Devonian period 340 million years ago, when Ireland’s landscape resembled that of the modern Sahara Desert. Infrequent river channels occasionally flooded with water and carried cobbles of white quartz, red jasper and other rocks along their beds. Sometimes the water spilled over onto the adjacent flood plains and left sheets of sand behind. These sediments became cemented together with iron oxides to form coarse rocks called conglomerate or finer red to greencoloured sandstones. Approximately 300 million years ago all the rocks at Caherconree were folded into a large anticline or arch when a southern continent called Gondwana collided with Europe. Today the uppermost part of the fold forms the spine of the Slieve Mish Mountains. In the last two million years the climate got much colder and at times ice collected on the sides of the mountain and developed into glaciers that moved down slope. On Caherconree the oldest rocks were exposed both in Derrymore Glen by the action of this ice as it deepened the valley, and

Nature’s Knowledge
Myrrh Commiphora molmol
There are a significant number of herbs that are anti-microbial and a small selection can be considered particularly strong for local and systemic infection working quickly and efficiently when the need arises. Myrrh falls into this category and I have used this herb in combination with other anti-microbials on a number of occasions to help fight both local and systemic infection in the body with excellent results. The three wise men recognised the worth of this herbal resin and thankfully for us it is still here to stay.
Parts used; Gum Resin
Preparations and dosage
Family; Burseraceae
Best taken as a tincture preparation as the resin dissolves more easily in alcohol than water
Healing with Herbs
Deirdre Daly
Tincture dosage 1 to 4 ml three times daily 1 to 2 teaspoons powdered for an infusion using boiling water and infusing for 10 to 15 minutes, taken three times a day As a rinse or gargle 5 to 10 drops of tincture to a glass of water Externally use a cotton bud to apply a small amount of the tincture on a wound Safety Considerations;
Myrrh is well known to most people as one of the gifts to Jesus from the ‘three wise men’ along with frankincense and gold. This implies the worth of this resin, which was much prized in ancient times both for its healing properties therapeutically and spiritually. Myrrh has been used for thousands of years as an ingredient in incense and perfumes, in religious ceremonies and for embalming. It was also used as a popular paste to help stop bleeding, and an antiseptic for cleaning and healing wounds. Today myrrh is used in Western Herbalism, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Greek medicine and Ayurvedic medicine. It is the resin of myrrh that is used, which is formed when a wound is made through the tree bark and into the sapwood. Over time the tree oozes out a sticky, golden yellow resin, which is the part that is used in herbal medicine.
Myrrh is generally regarded as very safe to use by both the young and old and whilst pregnant or during breast-feeding. A small percentage of people get a contact allergy from Myrrh (mostly from its essential oils) so if using externally and a red rash forms soon after using it then it should be discontinued. Theoretically myrrh may interfere with anti-diabetic treatment as hypoglycemic properties have been documented. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, Nature’s Knowledge, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Email: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com
The resin is used as an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agent and can be highly effective when taken alongside other herbs to help fight infection in the body. Myrrh has a special affinity for the respiratory system and can be used as part of an approach for the common cold, tonsillitis, laryngitis and respiratory catarrhal complaints such as sinusitis and sore throats. Systemically myrrh can be felt in the whole body and can be used for mucous damp conditions of the respiratory and digestive systems. It is also used widely for viral, bacterial and fungal infections of the mouth, gum, throat and for vaginal infections. The tincture of myrrh can be added to water and used as a gargle for all mouth infections and as a douche for vaginal infections. The tincture of myrrh can be taken internally for these conditions also. The resin can be used for wounds because of its powerful antiseptic action and the powdered myrrh used as a paste can be applied to cuts as an anti-infective, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent.

Athrú Aeráide agus Oidhreacht Chultúrtha The CHERISH Project (Climate, Heritage and Environments of Reefs, Islands & Headlands) Isabel Bennett Is é ‘Sceireanna, Oileáin agus Cinn Tíre – Aeráid, Oidhreacht agus Timpeallacht’ an teideal atá ar comhthionscnamh nua idir Éirinn agus an Bhreatain Bheag a bunaíodh le déanaí. Ins an tionscnamh seo, ina bhfuil an Clár Fionnachtana agus Suirbhé Geolaíochta na tíre seo ag comhoibrú le hOllscoil Aberystwyth agus leis an gCoimisiún Ríoga dos na Séadchomharthaí ársa agus na Séadchomharthaí stairiúla sa Bhreatain Bheag, beidh siad ag féachaint ar na suímh atá cois farraige, agus iadsan atá faoi bhrú ón athrú aeráide, ón aimsir nó ón taoide 7 rl. I gCiarraí, beidh siad ag obair in iarthar Chorca Dhuibhne agus mar an gcéanna in iarthar Uíbh Ráthach, agus beidh cabhair á lorg acu uainne, pobal na háite, mar sin, bígí ag faire amach dosna fograí uathu! At a recent conference hosted in Dingle by Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, Conn.), entitled ‘Sea, Land, and Spirit: Coastal Environment Ireland’ one of the many interesting papers delivered was by Anthony Corns of the Discovery Programme (www.discoveryprogramme. ie) about an exciting new cooperative project taking place between Ireland and Wales, the Cherish Project. This project, launched last March and funded by the Ireland-Wales Programme of the European Union, has been established to look at threats to our coastal heritage, and much of the western portion of the Dingle Peninsula, as well as the western portion of the Iveragh Peninsula, are among the target areas selected for most attention. We certainly have plenty of islands and headlands to which attention can be given (I’m not sure about reefs!) Other partners involved in the project are the Geological Survey in Ireland and The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (Project Lead) and Aberystwyth University: Department of Geography and Earth Sciences. It is also hoped to engage local communities in this work, and provide
training to enable people to work as ‘citizen scientists’ so we should be watching out for updates about this. Skellig Michael is one of the areas particularly targeted, but here on the Dingle Peninsula we have many coastal sites, some of which are under serious threat from coastal erosion (e.g. An Dún Beag promontory fort as well as shell midden sites and other features now located right beside the sea thanks to sea level rise). These sites will be looked at to see how these factors, as well as climate change, such as increased numbers of storms etc., are affecting them. Specialists from various areas will be employed to do this, and some employment in such specialist fields has already been generated. The project will support specialist organisations in both countries to employ new technologies such as laser scanning, bathymetry, surveying and photography using drones, and geophysics as well as more traditional survey techniques, and shipwrecks will also be included in the survey, as well as the various archaeological sites of all periods built along the selected areas of coastline. It is hoped that some excavation will also take place, although it is very early in the project, so no specific sites have yet been targeted. Specialists in hydrography, geology, archaeology, built and maritime heritage, remote sensing and environmental science will be employed in this research. As befits any modern project, there is a website, http://www.cherishproject.eu/en/ (available in Welsh as well as English). There is also a Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/CherishProject/, which also posts in English and in Welsh. Hopefully, in due course, posts in Irish will also be made. Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne is already involved with the Discovery Programme through the Corca Dhuibhne 3d project (www.corcadhuibhne3d.ie) and we would hope to develop this cooperation when the time comes for the Cherish Project to look at the Dingle Peninsula.
To learn more about coastal and other archaeological sites on the peninsula, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Buail isteach ag Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil maidir le stair agus seandálaíocht na háite. Tá siopa leabhar agus caife ann. How to recognise Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica) Glúineach Bhiorach Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica), is an invasive herbaceous perennial (a plant that can live more than one year). Since it was introduced as an ornamental plant in the 19th Century from Japan, it has spread across the island of Ireland, particularly along watercourses, transport routes and waste grounds where its movement is unrestricted. Identification Only female Japanese knotweed plants have been recorded to date in Ireland and the UK hence it is spread entirely from site to site through the deliberate or accidental movement of rhizome fragments or cut stems. Some reports suggest a fragment of knotweed as little as 0.6 grams can result in new growth. The key features of the plant are summarised below: Produces fleshy red tinged asparagus like shoots when it first breaks through the ground in an established stand. Has large, heart or spade-shaped green leaves which are approximately the size of your hand. Has leaves arranged in a zig-zag pattern along the stem. Grows up to 3 metres in height. Yellow / cream flowers in late summer (Typically the start forming from late July onwards). Hollow bamboo like stems which have distinctive ring like nodules at regular intervals along it. Brown stem in winter once it has died back. Extensive rhizome system (roots) (7m x 3m approximately) Orange centred rhizome. Spread entirely via the movement of plant and rhizome fragments. Source: http://invasivespeciesireland.com If you intend treating japanese knotweed this year please wait until after flowering for best results.

Why Play Ball At All? (Part 2) Colin Sheeran There is a concerted wondering afoot. It wonders has the dedication and devotion of the current intercounty player gone too far? Is the wheel out of kilter? Are the sacrifices worth it? The consensus has it that our players fall into two broad categories; the successful and the unsuccessful. The analysis has it that both groups are doomed, for different reasons but doomed none the less. Let’s look at the lot of the successful. For the successful and high profile, there is unprecedented scrutiny. Their lives are lived under the microscope. Their regimes are extreme and restrictive. They are not allowed do anything remotely enjoyable off the pitch and increasingly they are not allowed do anything enjoyable on the pitch. Worse again, the sacrifice of their youth, social lives and positional decision making are for naught. They get nothing from the endeavour because they do not get paid. The successful are so professional that money must follow. Pay for play is on the way.

I understand that an intercounty player cannot do whatever he wants, whenever he wants to but I am not sure their lot should be cast as a sacrifice. I am not sure he gets no reward for what he is doing. Spending five nights a week forging life long friendships, playing a game you love in the company of like minded peers; Being supported and encouraged to find and maintain your peak levels of health, fitness and performance; Getting education and training, the time and the facilities to test yourself; Enjoying the respect of your peers and community; Maybe even a little adulation? It’s not that bad is it? There is a lot to be said for taking something as far as you can take it. An important question for a young man to answer is “Where is my limit?”. Sport provides an excellent graduated framework for finding out a few things about yourself and elite sport is a simple extension of that. The benefit of being helped and encouraged to thoroughly and comprehensively answer this fundamental question should not be overlooked. And once uncovered the answer is in the back pocket for the rest of your life. But what of the things you have to give up? The wine, the women, the song? The take ways, the late night bars, the milky bars? Well, anything worthwhile tends to involve some choices. Having the cake. Eating the cake. It is accepted that if I want to get first class honours, I have a better chance if I’m not in a nite club Monday through Sunday. And really, what’s the problem with that? In assessment of my own friends and our twenties, maybe slightly less socialising and a slip more go-getting wouldn’t have been the worst thing that could have happened to us. A bit of rigour, a bit of discipline, a bit of hardship; I’m not convinced it would have been disastrous. Also, let us remember, it’s not forever. These things will always be there for later. The world is not going to run out of cream buns or tequila. There is precious little you can do at 22 that you can’t do at 32. I think intercounty players know this. I think it is obvious to them that the principle beneficiary of their efforts is themselves. And that’s why they put up with the parts that don’t appeal. And that’s why they continue and they will continue.

Low Back Pain
injury but it is usually more general and not as severe as with discogenic pain.
Facet vs Disc
When we start talking about disc injury, we are usually referring to a small tear in the outer annular fibers of a disc that has either resulted in a bulge, a protrusion, or an extrusion of the disc particle. Pain occurs when a disc touches off a nerve due to one of these injuries, triggering a series of reactions, some of which include muscle spasm, inflammation and pain. Often the nerve root irritation sends pain signals down either the front or back of the leg depending on which disc level is affected. In contrast to facet joint injuries, with disc injuries, bending forward causes a significant increase in pain, as it usually increases compression of the disc against the nerve. So again to generalize, disc injuries are usually more sensitive to forward flexion, whereby facet injuries are very sensitive to backward extension. A classic and very telling sign of a disc injury is where the spine becomes visibly curved off to one side as the disc tries to get away from the nerve it is touching. You will visibly see the person’s spine twisted off to one side.
Eddie O’Grady Two of the most common causes of low back pain presenting in clinic are discogenic (disc) or facet joint related pain. Injury to either can cause severe discomfort, limiting a person’s movement and ability to carry out normal daily activities. The facet articulations are small joints along each segment at the back of the spine, controlling the movement of the spine. There are two of these joints at each vertebral level. The intervertebral discs are the primary shock absorbers, generally between a quarter and a half inch in height, interconnecting the bodies of the vertebral segments. Therefore, it can be considered that the discs and the facets create joint complexes that allow for both shock absorption and movement at each segment of the spine. One of the primary symptoms with lumbar facet joint locking is an increase in pain on extension of the lower back, that is basically more pain when you try and straighten up your lower back or lean back on it. This position loads pressure on the locked, and now most likely inflamed lumbar facet joints. Usually in this type of injury there is pain relief to a certain extent when a person bends forward. The reason for
this is that forward flexion decompresses the facet joint articulations, releasing some of the pressure on the joints and hence the associated pain. There can be nerve irritation with this Beauty Salon
re Beauty Main Street, Dingle.
With a locked facet joint, a simple osteopathic manipulation and a person can get off a treatment couch and have an immediate 60 - 70 % relief of symptoms, the person often being almost back to normal the next day. Disc injuries generally benefit more from medication, although proper physio can also play its part. With a facet joint injury, you are simply unlocking the locked facet joint which limited movement and was causing the problem. With a disc injury, you are trying to take pressure off the disc in the hope that it stops pressing against the nerve. Once off lumbar facet joint manipulation can play it’s part in recovery from disc disorders, if used at the right time by an experienced practitioner. Again this is used to mobilize the area and try and take pressure off the disc.
deep tissue massage, dry needling, manipulation at the right time, but not endless sessions of this for weeks. A rehab program involving pilates type exercises etc. is paramount once a patient improves. Continuous spinal manipulations several times weekly for extended periods pushed by certain professions could do more harm than good, causing sheering of the disc and slowing healing. ‘’Putting back in a slipped disc’’ by manipulation is a myth. When somebody gets a manipulation done, the little crack you hear is when the facet joint gaps or unlocks. It is not the disc going back into place. That is the reason one person gets massive relief from ‘’the crack’’ during a manipulation and another person doesn’t. To generalize it is because one person had a locked facet joint, the other had a disc injury. If you look at the diagram of disc disorders above, you will see that the disc is more bulging, protruding or breaking down rather than being out of place.
Often with a suspected disc injury a physio etc. may need to refer a patient to a doctor for a second opinion and most possibly medication( NSAIDs, muscle relaxant, nerve blocker), depending on the level of pain and discomfort. The doctor may also refer the patient for an MRI if they need more information on the level of damage. Physio generally involves

Café Mhúsaem Chorca Dhuibhne Buail isteach go dtí Café Mhúsaem Bhaile an Fheirtéaraigh idir seo agus deireadh mhí Iúil nuair a bheidh saothar leis an bpéintéir Bob Ó Cathail ar taispeáint ann agus ar díol. Ealaíontóir féinmhúinte is ea Bob Ó Cathail atá ina chónaí i gCeann Trá, Corca Dhuibhne ó 1993 i leith. Is i gContae Cheatharlach a rugadh agus a tógadh é agus as san a chuaigh sé ar a chamchuairt ar fuaid na hEorpa, an Mheáin Oirthir agus na hÁise. Tar éis dó tréimhsí a chaitheamh ag obair i Sasana, san Isiltír, in Iosrael agus san Ind, d’fhill sé ar Éirinn, ar dtús go Baile Átha Cliath agus ansan go Ciarraí. Is fuirist a stíl a aithint de bharr réimse agus éagsúlacht leathan ábhar ina chuid saothair, agus as na dathanna agus dearadh láidir a úsáideann sé. Is léir go dtagann an stíl áirithe seo as a chúlra san Ealaín Cheilteach, ealaíon araltach, ag obair mar dhathadóir comharthaí agus ag péinteáil múrmhaisí. Chaith sé tréimhse ag múineadh ealaíne i ranganna oíche agus ceardlanna, i gclódóireacht bloc, i ndearadh Ceilteach, agus i bpeannaireacht, chomh maith le líníocht agus péintéireacht. Is iad na healaíontóirí is mó a spreagann Bob ná Picasso, Van Gogh, Chagall agus Matisse, agus is meascán inphléasctha dó iadsan agus an cúlra Ceilteach a chur le céile. Tá Bob ag plé le taispeántaisí aonair agus grúpa le breis agus triocha bliain anuas, agus tá a chuid pictiúr scaipthe ar fuaid na cruinne. Cuirtear fáilte roimh gach éinne go dtí an stiúidió i mBaile an tSléibhe (Fionn Trá) chun bualadh le Bob agus breathnú air i mbun oibre. Question I am the parent of a four-year-old daughter who will start Primary School in September. My only income is from my One-Parent Family Payment and €90 I get each week from a part-time job. I don’t get maintenance and I’m worried about the extra costs involved in sending my daughter to school. Is there State help available? Answer As you are getting a social welfare payment, you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) to help meet the cost of your daughter’s school uniform and footwear, as long as your weekly income is below a certain level. You are currently receiving a One-Parent Family Payment of €222.80 (including a child payment) and earning €90, so your weekly income is €312.80, which is below the income limit of €418.10 for a lone parent with one child and will entitle you to BSCFA. The BSCFA payment this year is €125 for a qualified child aged 4–11 years. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically in many cases. If you haven’t already received a letter from them, you will need to apply by 30 September 2017. Application forms are available on the Department’s website, welfare.ie, or from your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. A form can also be requested by SMS (text message) by texting ‘Form BTSCFA’ followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing the Department at BSCFA@welfare.ie. The Department of Education and Skills also runs a School Books Grant Scheme which is available to State-funded schools to help with the cost of school books. Some schools will help with the cost of buying textbooks or run a Textbook Rental Scheme. You should contact your daughter’s school principal to find out if this option is available at her new school. You can get detailed information on the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance on citizensinformation.ie. West Kerry Live 47

Payable to Patrick Casey, Sinead Lavin Cromane GAA SENIORS: Cromane 1-10, Ballyduff 1-6 Cromane travelled to North Kerry on Saturday afternoon for an early throw-in (4pm) to take on Ballyduff in their latest county league game. The first half wasn’t one of our best as we conceded an early goal. We steadied ourselves and led by 0-5 to 1-1 after 20 minutes. However, by half-time, our hosts were level at 0-6 to 1-3. We started to get to grips with things at the start of the second half and a goal from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan put us in control 1-8 to 1-5 ahead with 15 minutes left. We held on for the win despite some wayward shooting. We are making a habit out of squeezing through in close games, following on from the previous week’s two-point win. This is, of course, a great characteristic to have in any team. This win leaves us with six wins from our first seven games in the county league. Team and scorers: Paudie McCarthy; Liam Teahan, Eoghan Walsh, Seán Teahan; Finbar Casey, John Michael Foley, Shane Ahern; Darren Houlihan 0-5 (0-1f), Liam Walsh; Matt Colborne, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 1-2 (0-1f), Cian O’Keeffe; Emmet Casey 0-1, Seán O’Sullivan 0-2, Mikey Houlihan. Substitutes: Sean Walsh for Cian O’Keeffe 35 minutes, Danny Shea, Danny Connor, Paudie McMahon, Martin Sweeney, Micheál Shaughnessy. Cúl Camps: Have you booked your GAA Cúl Camps place yet? The popular camps take place at Cromane GAA pitch from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 21. You can book online here: https://www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie/ or contact a club officer. The camps cost €60 for the first child, €50 for a second child, and €40 for each additional child. Munster Final: Well done to Donnchadh Walsh and the Kerry team on winning their fifth Munster title in a row after Sunday’s 1-23 to 0-15 win over Cork in Killarney. This is Donnchadh’s eighth Munster football championship medal, his first came in 2007. Well done Donnchadh. 48 West Kerry Live

‘Sa leabhar seo, an chéad chnuasach filíochta uaidh, scaoileann Séamus Barra Ó Súilleabháin a racht. Trí phearsa Dhónaill Dhuibh, más é sár-, príomh- nó frith-laoch an tsaothair seo é, tugann an file aghaidh ar chuid de cheisteanna móra agus beaga na freacnairce mar a gcíorann sé an sean agus an nua, an óige agus an dul in aois, an beo agus an marbh.
