John Blek Returns to Dingle John Blek plays Nelliefreds in Dingle on Saturday 18th of November as part of the Catharsis Vol.1 tour.Doors 10pm. Tickets €5 before 10pm or €10 after Catharsis Vol.1 is the third solo album from Cork-based songwriter John Blek. Best known for his work with his band John Blek & the Rats, John has begun a new journey influenced by the folk music of Ireland, Britain and the US. With his solo work, he delves into the world of fingerstyle guitar and reveals the deeply personal and poignant lyrical aspects of his character. Having spent much of the early part of 2017 in and out of hospital with some mysterious illness and with his energy at an all time low, John turned to his guitar and what was left of his voice to fill the days. The material he wrote was full of resilience, pain and uncertainty. Of new love through fevered dreams, of strength, hope, distance, sedation and the cure. This catharsis became the new album from the ever-original Corkman 6 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan War on Waste:- Two New Projects to Tackle Food Waste Two projects will receive funding this year from DAFM’s Rural Innovation and Development Fund, for initiatives aimed at reducing food waste generated by food businesses, retailer/wholesalers, or suppliers in rural areas. Following a call for proposals issued in July, the objective of which was to provide, on a competitive basis, funding to activities or items that relate to the promotion and/ or development of innovative food waste reduction pilot projects in rural areas, the applications received were assessed by an Evaluation Committee comprising of members from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Funding has been made available to the following successful projects: • FoodCloud – ‘FoodCloud Hubs – Supporting Food Companies and Charities in Rural Communities to Work Together to Solve the Problem of Food Waste Through Surplus Food Redistribution’ (€111,407) • Clean Technology Centre, Cork Institute of Technology (CTC-CIT) – ‘Pilot Initiative to Promote Food Waste Reduction and Prevent Food Waste in The Midleton Rural Economic Development Zone’ (€78,220) Bat and Bird Boxes The objectives of these two options are to improve biodiversity in the farming landscape and replace habitats lost through changes in farming practice. Bats also play an important role in farm pest management as they feed on midges, flies and other potential pest species. This action is to help to replace natural roost locations for bats that have been removed through the changes in farming practice. It will help to conserve some of the nine bat species found in Ireland. All Irish bat species are protected by the 1976 Wildlife Act and 2000 amendment and the EU Habitats Directive, as are many birds, such as the Barn Owl, who is often spotted around the peninsula. These boxes should be located in areas where there is an abundance of bats or bird-life. Bats in particular favour hedgerows and treelines as navigation routeways and feeding sites. Areas where bats can be spotted zipping around in the evenings are suitable areas to locate a bat roost box. The main requirements are as follows: • Install new bat boxes in clusters of three or more, with each box facing a different direction. • The maximum number of Bat boxes is 15, in groupings of three boxes per tree or per post or per building. • The location must be clearly marked on the map and must be maintained in the same position for the duration of the contract. Once the box is installed, a marking must be put on the tree or post to identify it. • Do not place the box in a lit up area of the farmyard or adjacent to lighting • Bat Roost Boxes must be in place by this stage, for GLAS I, II & III. • It is recommended that the box is cleaned annually to prevent carryover of parasites from one year to the next. It is recommended that bat boxes are placed a minimum of 4 metres off the ground and an area of 1m radius around the Roost Box must be clean with no ivy and/or branches. Bat boxes should be grouped in clusters of three or more, while bird boxes must be sited individually at each location. Main Benefits Of Soil Sampling There is little doubt that soil sampling is good farm manahement practice, reducing costs, or allocating costs where they are required. The principal benefits of doing this are: •

Improved Yields and Economic return

Management tool for your fertiliser plan

Efficient use of fertiliser

Indicate the level of P, K and lime in the soil

Environmental benefits

Micronutrient requirements of the crop

Whether you are growing grass, Barley or any crop you need to know what level of soil fertility you are dealing with. We all know the amount of units of Phosphorus and Potassium per acre that we need to grow the relevant crops but if we don’t know the level of these elements and the ph. of the soil we are going to affect the yield of the crop and in return the money in your pocket. If you can apply the correct level of the different elements based on your soil sampling results you will obtain the highest yield possible per acre 12 West Kerry Live

and therefore increase your economic return per acre. There will be certain fields that have lower levels of the major elements than others and these fields will struggle to perform. Every farmer should set out at the start of the growing season with a fertiliser plan for the particular crops that you are growing. This fertiliser plan will detail the correct amount and type of fertiliser to apply to the different fields on the farm and the level of lime that needs to be applied as well. This fertiliser plan affects all aspects of the agricultural enterprise and will also keep the farmer within the limits set out by the Nitrates Directive and prevent a penalty under Cross Compliance. The fertiliser plan success and effectiveness is based on your soil sample results and cannot exist without samples have being taken With the increased pressure on farm incomes and the high level of fertiliser prices that farmers are subjected to it is vital that farmers are not applying too much of the wrong product. Your soil sample will tell you what fields need P, K and lime the most and also tell you what fields to target most with your slurry which will reduce your fertiliser usage. You will have fields that will show up a high level of P and K and lime and there can be huge savings on these fields by cutting back on the levels of these elements that are applied. If you haven’t soil sampled you won’t know if your soil is low in lime. If this is the case you could be losing money. If you have your soil at the correct ph. levels it could save you up to 2 bags of Nitrogen per acre. When you get your soil sample back depending on what you have sampled for you will get a sheet of paper back with all the different levels of those elements on it. The Lime is measured on a ph. system which tests the acidity of the soil. The more acidic your soil is the more lime you need to raise the level of the ph. The ideal ph. for soil to grow grass is between 6.2 and 6.5 and this correct ph. will release all the necessary elements available to the crop The P and the K are measured on an index system from 1 to 4. Index 1 being too low and Index 4 being too high When you don’t soil sample as we have already said you are farming in the dark and you could be applying elements to the soil that you don’t need to this is both a waste of money and detrimental to the environment. Soil sampling primarily allows the efficient use of chemical and animal manures on the land. If you apply chemical fertiliser or animal manures to soils that are at an Index 4 for P then you will be applying surplus P and this can then be leached of the soil and into the neighbouring waterways and cause pollution to these waterways and result in algae growth. Soils that have excessive levels of Phosphorus and Nitrates are more likely to leach these elements into the waterways. Soil sampling allows farmers to avoid applying Phosphorus and Nitrogen to areas of the farm that are naturally high in those elements. A farmer can also get an in-depth soil sample done whereby you get results back on the various trace elements that are present in the soil. These could include •

Available Phosphate

Exchangeable Potassium

Exchangeable Magnesium

Total Cobalt

Total Manganese

Total Zinc

Total Copper

Available Boron

Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen

Molybdenum (can effect lime requirement by up to 7.5t/ha)

These elements can have a serious impact on tillage crops and grazing livestock and affect the tonnage per acre and the quality of the crop. If you have a crop that is healthy and growing well this crop will need fewer inputs to get the desired yield per acre than a crop that is struggling for lack of certain minerals. Doing a soil sample on micro nutrients is effectively shinning an even bigger torch on the soil which allows you see even more about your soil that you are farming and hence allows the farmer to be more efficient in the day to day running for the farm. The point for farmers to remember is that the annual cost of soil sampling is roughly 50 cents per acre per year and if you compare that to the price of fertiliser per acre per year it’s a no brainer. By not soil sampling you are letting money leak down the drain so stop the leak and your farm soil sampled today by your agricultural advisor and start benefiting form more efficient and profitable farming. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Lamb Rogan Josh Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Most people like a really nice curry every now and then. Don’t feel daunted by the idea of making a curry, think of it as stew with some spices and a great depth of flavour. Don’t worry that it will not be authentic because the chances of making an authentic one are slim, unless you grew up making curry every day. So why not give it a go. If you are not used to cooking with spices, my advice is to go easy with the spices at first and really try to explore the different tastes of each. Each time you make it try to think of the last time and build on it or correct the seasoning of the dish. As with all curries and spicy dishes, go and spend a little on a selection of good spices. Once you have them you will find that you can make a range of dishes from just a few spices. Remember that all spices have a shelf life. I always recommend sourcing your spices in a spice shop where you will find that they are usually cheaper and much fresher. Ingredients 1kg lamb shoulder, diced 150g natural yoghurt handful of almonds, crushed tiny pinch of Saffron (expensive as a spice but you only ever need a tiny amount)

10g red chilli powder 10g coriander powder 5g turmeric powder To Finish 1 bunch coriander leaves, finely chopped 10g ginger, shredded Method Mix the almonds, saffron, salt, and half of ginger and half of the garlic into the yoghurt to make a marinade. Put the lamb in this marinade for 2-3 hours. Crush the cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, star anise and black pepper with a pestle and mortar or with a heavy pan. Put a large heavy bottom pan over a medium heat then add some oil and the crushed spices. Stir this and allow the spices to brown but be careful that they don’t burn. Add the onions. Cook these for about 15 minutes over this heat to allow them to brown and make sure you stir them every so often to prevent them from sticking. Add the marinated lamb along with the marinade and cook for about 10 minutes. Add in the tomato paste. Let this cook for a further 2-3 minutes then add in the stock, chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Cook over a low heat for about 40 minutes, or until the lamb is cooked. Garnish with the chopped coriander and shredded ginger.

5 cloves of garlic, crushed

Serve with some fluffy rice.

The Tomb in the Lab is a series of discussions, demonstrations and displays taking place during Science Week Ireland. All events are based on Killaclohane Portal Tomb near Milltown, Kerry’s oldest known man-made structure dating to about 3800 BC. The Neolithic tomb underwent a major excavation and restoration programme in 2015 and the artefacts found have been the subject of intensive scientific scrutiny. The techniques used in these tests and the results are showcased for the first time during Science Week, which runs from 12th to 19th November. The event is funded by the Heritage Council and Creative Ireland and supported by Kerry County Council. I was born in no. 4 Chapel Lane. My mom was an only child but she brought 16 children into the world, 7 of those were still born. I was born in December 1940, the youngest of them all. When I grew up in Dingle the families were all big, (no birth control then!) and of course people were very religious and obeyed the church.

We had a very happy childhood, six boys and three girls. People didn’t have much then, but they shared. My Dad, Peter Kennedy, was a very hard working man, very self sufficient. He was born in Baile na Buaile and my Mother was born in Tralee. Dad was a fluent Irish speaker. Mom tried her best especially when the nightly rosary was said, as we children would giggle at her attempts.

The shops in Dingle at the time were Teresa Moriarty’s The Mall, the window always beautifully decorated. May Delia also had a shop on Main Street, for Christmas she used to dress her window in fairy lights. The shops used to give out Christmas boxes to their customers to thank them for their custom. McCarthy’s, Adams, B. Keane’s and Peggy Ashe used to do it. We used to have strawberry cordial for Christmas Day. My mother used to make Christmas cakes, she was a great cook. We used to put a big red candle on our window and we used to make paper decorations. We had no Christmas tree but we had a crib. The youngest of the family would light the big red candle. There used to be a big Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Benner’s used to have a Christmas Tree and we used to think it was magical when we glared in the window at it. There was one dispensary in Goat street - Dr. Savage. There was no medical centre then. At the back of the hospital there was a place called The Dead House. No matter who died, parents used to send their children to touch the body and say a prayer. I have eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2017 – An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to 0-10 Lios Póil Lispole are the Lee Strand West Kerry League 2017 champions after they defeated An Ghaeltacht in the final played in Páirc an Ághasaigh last Saturday, An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to 0-11 Lispole. Cathal O’Sullivan opened the scoring in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final for Lispole with a well taken point from play, this was followed by a point from play and a point from a free kick from Declan O’Sullivan. Ciarán Ó Coileáin opened the scoring for An Ghaeltacht with a point from play after seven minutes played. Lispole continued their dominance with two points from play and a point from a free kick from Declan O’Sullivan and a point from play from Tom Kavanagh to leave the score after fifteen minutes played in the first half, An Ghaeltacht 0-1 to 0-6 Lispole. A point from a free kick from Gearóid Mac Gearailt and a point from play from Brian Ó Beaglaoich brought An Ghaeltacht back into the game. Lispole responded with a point from a free kick from Cathal O’Sullivan before another An Ghaeltacht point from a free kick from Gearóid Mac Gearailt brought the first half to a close. When Referee Peter Lyons blew the whistle for halftime in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final the scoreboard read An Ghaeltacht 0-4 to 0-8 Lispole. An Ghaeltacht brought on Roibeard Ó Sé, Seán Ó Gairbhí and Dara Ó Sé for the restart but it was Lispole through a point from play from Cathal O’Sullivan that reopened the second half proceedings in Páirc an Ághasaigh. An Ghaeltacht responded with a point from play and two points from free kicks from Dara Ó Sé before five minutes were played of the second half. Lispole rallied and with Breandán Dorgan, Mike Jim Fitzgerald, Garreth Noonan, Tom Kavanagh, Donnacha and Noel Higgins making their presence felt around the middle of the field An Ghaeltacht found it very difficult to open a way through to the Lispole goal. An Ghaeltacht’s Cathal Mac Gearailt was on the end of a fine move and when it seemed all he had to beat was Lispole keeper Conor Ó hAiniféin out of nowhere came Breandán Dorgan to hit him a fair shoulder which dispossessed him and led to a Lispole counterattack that finished with a great Noel Higgins point from play. With fifteen minutes gone in the second half the score was An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to 0-10 Lispole. The impressive Declan O’Sullivan kicked another point from a free kick for Lispole shortly after and this was to be the last score of the game. An Ghaeltacht brought on PJ Mac Láimh and Colm Ó Muircheartaigh. With ten minutes left in the game Lispole were down to fourteen men after losing Breandán Dorgan. An Ghaeltacht to their credit continued to bring the game to Lispole and runs from Pádraig Ó Sé, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Ciarán Ó Coileáin nearly broke through but the Lispole defence were in no mood for surrender and with centre back Noel Higgins marshalling his men the Lispole defence stood firm. When Referee Peter Lyons blew the whistle for fulltime in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final the scoreboard read, An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to 0-11 Lispole.

One of the finest song-smiths of his generation, Dublin-born Mark Geary is an intoxicating mix of spontaneous wit, charismatic storytelling and finely crafted songs reminiscent of those penned during the halcyon days of Dylan. Geary honed his craft in New York alongside luminaries such as Jeff Buckley and Glen Hansard, and has continued a rich recording and performing career for over two decades. From the outset it is impossible not to be charmed by Geary, who delivers both his music and his stories in unassuming and singular style. His natural humour and ability to read the moment, give his shows a uniqueness, leaving his audiences with the feeling that they have just experienced something very special. It’s five years since his last studio album and in that time, Mark has been frequently touring, building his fan-base throughout Europe and the US, and ‘gig-bashing’ songs shaped from ideas born on the road. For this latest studio album, 'The Fool' - produced by Karl Odlum in France, Geary has amassed a collection of well-honed lyrical songs with catchy hooks which often belie the deep emotions at play.

One for the Boys! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

For some years now, November has been taken over by the Movember movement, a global organization raising awareness of health issues that are particularly pertinent to men. It is the time of year that men can lay down their razors to grow a moustache, all for a good cause. Movember cite prostate and testicular cancer, mental health issues and suicide prevention as their primary concerns. Funds raised are put into supporting independent research and development programmes for these issues and to increase awareness among the male population of risk, treatment and prevention of the same. With no chance of growing a moustache this month, I’ll do my bit and delve into the role of nutrition in prostate health. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men, after lung cancer. One in eight men in Ireland will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system producing a fluid component of semen that nourishes sperm. As men age, the prostate may become enlarged in a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous condition. Prostate cancer also causes enlargement of the prostate. Both conditions share similar symptoms of frequent urge to urinate, difficulty when urinating and/or incomplete emptying of the bladder. While these conditions are quite rare in men under forty, they are increasing in those over 60 years. As with many cancers, the risk of incidence increases with age, not because the aging process is a risk factor but more likely that we are exposed to cancer-causing factors over a longer period and our ability to naturally fend off risks may diminish with age through loss of vitality and health, poorer nutrition and less active lifestyles. Many cancers, including prostate may take years to manifest which is also reflected in the statistics relating to cancer risk and aging. While the statistics are alarming laid out in black and white, a colourful diet is a sure way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer and improve the outcomes and survival rates for those already diagnosed.

these diets is due to soybean intake but more likely due to a healthier approach to eating and the increased consumption of plant-based foods. A moderate intake of protein from fish, nuts and seeds will also provide healthy fats which reduce risk of prostate cancer. Monounsaturated oils from olives and avocado (rich in vitamin E) are protective while heated, treated oils such as corn, rapeseed and vegetable oils can increase risk. Fried foods, trans fats, red meat, sugar, dairy and high calcium intakes are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer which may explain the rising rates among the Irish men! Extracts from Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin seed, available as supplements may be included in a prostate-friendly diet but do seek good advice on these supplements. Selenium, Zinc, B vitamins and folate can be added to the manly list and readily available in foods such as brazil nuts, wholegrains, fish and pumpkin seeds and topped up if needed in supplement form. So, Men of West and Mid Kerry, enjoy the month of Movember! The kitchen is officially yours! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat St, Dingle 066 9151360. Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the red pigment of tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is a crucial ingredient to reduce prostate cancer risk. It is thought that lycopene targets specific free radicals associated with DNA damage to prostate cells which can instigate the onset of prostate cancer. Tomato products such as passata and bottled tomato juice are also a rich source of lycopene, offering us year-round protection, even in the Winter. Pomegranate seeds also provide important antioxidants such as polyphenols, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Like lycopene, these antioxidants protect the prostate cells from free radical damage caused by metabolic activity and environmental toxins. Anthocyanins may also reduce the risk of urinary and bladder infections associated with enlarged prostate. Pomegranate seeds have the added benefit of inhibiting oestrogen production, which is a possible cause of BPH in older men. Cruciferous vegetables, top the charts again when it comes to prostate cancer. Sulfuronane in these vegetables acts as a potent anticancer agent and is particularly beneficial in hormone sensitive prostate cancer. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale can be easily incorporated into the diet – just don’t boil them to a mush! Steaming or simmering in a little water will help to ensure your prostate gets the best from these veggies. Soybeans, although controversial, are worth a mention. Populations with higher than average intakes of soybeans tend to have lower incidence of both prostate and oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. This is attributed to phytoestrogens which offer protection from the harmful, growth promoting effects of oestrogen on these cancer cells. Other legumes and lentils also provide this kind of protection and fibre, which helps eliminate excess oestrogen from the body. These populations also enjoy a diet rich in fresh vegetables, eat very little meat and no dairy – all of which are relevant to both breast and prostate cancer. Dingle Notes Richie Williams FISHING FOR LITTER. Dingle Port has joined the national Fishing For Litter campaign which requests fishermen to collect litter which becomes entangled in their nets at sea and deposit same at port for proper disposal by onshore harbour staff. This action helps improve the environment both at sea and on shore while protecting wildlife and ensuring the fish we eat are not contaminated in any way either. Keep up the good work everybody. HARBOUR WORKS. Great to see the long awaited Harbour dredging is getting under way. When complete the deeper channel should help make the area more accessible and safer for local and visiting vessels of all sizes. The transfer of dredged material away from the harbour area will probably mean some traffic disruption but no doubt it is the correct time of the year as off peak tourism traffic is easing off now.

ST ELIZABETHS HOSPITAL PROJECT. News filtered through recently that a plan is being drawn up to reopen the St Elizabeths Hospital Building with the idea to use it as a multifunctional facility along with the Historical content being opened to the public in the form of museum. Certainly a very good project which should benefit the entire Peninsula and create much needed employment opportunities which have stagnated of late with much focus on the more populated areas. This plan definitely needs and I am sure will have the support of everybody in West Kerry and well beyond the Peninsula also. Good luck with the research and planning and I know that the personnel behind the project have the experience, the vision and the drive to take it as far as possible which hopefully will be final completion in the nit too distant future.

IONAD AN BHLASCAOID MHÓIR THE OPW GREAT BLASKET CENTRE

MEETING. Kerry Sustainable Energy Co Op are holding a Public Information Evening on Thursday November 23rd in Dingle Library between 6.30 to 8p.m.The session is open to all age groups and the Energy topic is certainly featuring prominently in the national and international media at present. SHOP LOCAL. With the big Christmas spend fever just around the corner the Business Chamber wish to appeal to everybody in the Peninsula to THINK LOCAL and SHOP LOCAL if at all possible this year. Although we may have had a relatively good tourist season some outlets did not benefit as much as other years so it is vitally important to support our local outlets and services and ensure as much employment as possible is maintained in Corca Dhuibhne. Yes every €10 you spend in and area will circle at least two and a half times more in that area so every euro spend locally really benefits the whole area many times over. Míle Buíochas. TIDY TOWNS. Three extra DOG TOILETS were placed around Slí Na Sláinte recently . They are located at Páirc An Ághasaigh, Upper Goat Street and opposite Dingle Mart and already have visible use thanks to careful canine owners, we appeal to the few who continue not to clean up after their offending animals to act more responsibility and help keep Dingles streets and footpaths clean and safe at all times.

Tá boird, leath bhoird is ticéadaí aonaracha ar díol ó Dhara Ó Cinnéide, ó Sheán Ó Catháin agus ó Oifig na dTicéad thoir san INEC. Breis

Beidh an Ghaeltacht ag dul thar teora amach don gcéad uair ó 2003 i gcraobhchomórtas caide na Mumhan Dé Domhnaigh beag seo. Is iad foireann Mhá Ealla, curadh idirmheánach peile Chorcaí, a bheidh inár gcoinne agus ní beag san mar dhúshlán. Ní beag ach an oiread an turas a chaithfidh an bhuíon imreoirí agus a lucht tacaíochta a thabhairt orthu féin toisc go gcuirfear tús leis an gcluiche ar a 1 a chlog san iarnóin i Má Ealla. Cúis misnigh don bpainéal go léir oiread de lucht leanúna na Gaeltachta a fheiscint amuigh ar an bpáirc ag ceiliúradh a mbua i gcraobh Chiarraí ar an nDomhnach deireanach den bhFómhar. Bhí na sean laethanta geala á dtabhairt chun cuimhne acu siúd a bhí i láthair agus ba mhór an t-éirí croí a tugadh do phobal na Gaeltachta go léir nuair a thug an captaen, Colm Ó Muircheartaigh, an corn thar táirseach Óstáin an Meadowlands isteach agus siar go dtí’n mBuailtín ina dhiaidh sin arís. Fágann bua na craoibhe idirmheánaigh go bhfuil cuid des na spriocanna a cuireadh rompu bainte amach ag an mbuíon imreoirí dúthrachtacha, dícheallacha seo i 2017. Tá Comórtas Pháidí Uí Shé buaite, cluiche ceannais Roinn 1 na sraithe bainte amach don gcéad uair le 10 mbliana, Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta buaite don gcéad uair le ocht mbliana déag agus, gan dabht, an chraobh idirmheánach buaite don gcéad uair le naoi mbliana déag. Tá glúin imreoirí óga ag teacht chun cinn arís ag an gcumann agus tá mórán íobairtí déanta acu chun ár seasamh a neartú i 2017. Éinne a bhí ag ceiliúradh i dTrá Lí agus thiar i gCorca Dhuibhne tar éis na craoibhe le déanaí, tuigfidh siad an meas agus an féinmhuinín atá tagtha chughainn arís sa chlub. Tá súil againn go leanfaidh an sodar ar a laghad coicíos eile ach tá bac mór le sárú. Tá súil againn ár lucht leanúna dílis a fheiscint i Má Ealla Dé Domhnaigh chun na haon chúnamh a thabhairt dúinn. I dteannta a chéile is fearr sinn! Oíche Aitheantais Do Dhriotháracha Uí Shé Tá ag éirí go diail le mór fheachtas bailithe airgid an chumainn le roinnt seachtainí agus scata bord á ndíol le lucht gnó agus le lucht leanúna don ócáid atá le bheith thoir san INEC i gCill Airne an mhí seo chughainn. Ócáid ar leith a bheidh anseo, ócáid b’fhéidir nach mbeidh aga againn a cheiliúradh arís. Tabharfar éachtaí agus gaiscí caide chlann driothár chun cuimhne ar an oíche i gcomhluadar na muintire, na gcomharsan agus na gcairde. Agus deireadh na bliana ag teannadh linn, beidh deis chomh maith againn, ní h-amháin ré caide Fheargail, Dharragh, Thomáis agus Mharc a chomóradh, ach deis bliain thar bhlianta ag glúin óg an lae inniu a thabhairt chun cuimhne.

Níl cead. Geansaí Bhriain Uí Bheaglaoich á tharraingt sa cluiche cheannais craobh idirmheánach an chontae i gcoinne an dTeampall Nua. Pic: Seán Ó Mainnín

Important Advice Before Buying A Used Car 1. Never, ever, buy a car without getting it independently checked by a qualified mechanic.. Ensure the mechanic is properly qualified and independent from the seller. 2. Always carry out a comprehensive history check through official vehicle record holders (e.g. Motorcheck, Cartell, myvehicle.ie, Carhistorycheck etc.). This can show if a vehicle has been written off, clocked or if it has outstanding finance. 3. The National Car Testing Service (NCTS) started printing the odometer history on the NCT Cert and the current reading on the disc from July 2014. So ask to see the Cert/disc and compare with the reading on the car now. If the prior odometer reading is more than the current one it could indicate that the car was clocked. 4. If buying from a garage, get a warranty

Motoring for the car. If the dealer is not willing to offer this, consider walking away from the sale. The NCT is not the same as a warranty. A vehicle still needs to be serviced in line with manufacturers’ guidelines in between NCTs. 5. All cars over 4 years old are legally required to have a valid NCT certificate. You can check whether a cert is fake by visiting www.ncts.ie and entering the vehicle registration number. This shows the expiry date of the last NCT cert issued for that vehicle. For commercial vehicles go to: www.cvrt.ie

parts and labour. A qualified mechanic should be able to identify worn or dangerous parts. Also check the vehicle’s service history for regular maintenance. 8. It is not a good idea to transact in cash and certainly don’t bring a large amount of cash to an isolated location when buying a used car. If you can avoid using cash, do so. Use a bank draft. The seller can verify the draft. No matter how you carry out the transaction always get a purchase receipt. Source: RSA.ie

6. If you are importing a used vehicle from the UK, make sure to check its odometer and test history first by visiting https://www. check-mot.service.gov.uk/ and entering the UK registration number and vehicle make. 7. What may seem like a bargain at the time, can end up costing you more in the long term with expensive replacement

Time to Consider an Electric Vehicle? Enjoying the quiet comfort of an electric vehicle isn't just great for your pocket, it's great for the environment too. Electric vehicles emit zero tailpipe greenhouse gas emissions thereby helping to improve air quality in our towns and cities, as well as reducing noise pollution. The town of Dingle has recently been chosen by the ESB Networks as a demonstration town to test how the smart electricity network of the future will operate. As part of a €4 million demonstration project to see how the grid copes with additional demands for power, new and existing homes will be fitted with solar panels, electric vehicle charging and battery storage points. It is also looking more and more likely that consumers will be faced with increases in taxes on diesel and petrol vehicles as the Govt comes under pressure from the EU to reduce emissions due to health and environmental concerns. The transport landscape is changing beyond recognition. Ireland currently has one of the most advanced electric vehicles (EVs) charging networks in Europe with over 1,200 standard and fast charge points across the island of Ireland. Benefits of ecars for Customers

Benefits of ecars for Businesses •

Accelerated capital allowance scheme permitting write off of capital investment within one year.

Government incentive of a €5,000 grant per vehicle and zero VRT

Reduction in company carbon footprint

Benefits for Society •

Significantly reduced air pollution

Lower CO2 emissions

Improved air quality

€5,000 Government grant towards the purchase of an electric vehicle

€120 motor tax band for electric vehicle

Free home charge point installed by ESB for the first 2,000 purchasers of new electric vehicles (T+Cs apply see ESB.ie)

Nationwide charge point infrastructure

Incredible driving experience

Electric vehicles are environmentally friendly so ecar drivers can feel confident that they are doing something to help the environment. Electric vehicles offer a real opportunity to reduce the carbon output of the transport sector, as they emit zero exhaust pipe emissions. Most people will charge their ecars at night when a higher proportion of electricity is generated from wind. The growth in the generation of electricity from renewable sources offers a route towards carbon neutral motoring.

Penalty points Penalty points on payment

How many of us actually know how the system works? Penalty point offences are recorded on your driving licence record if: • You are convicted of a driving offence that attracts penalty points, or • You are served with a fixed charge notice for an alleged offence that attracts penalty points and you opt to pay the fine rather than having the matter referred to the courts Since 17 April 2016 there are now 63 road traffic offences that attract penalty points Any driver accumulating 12 penalty points within any given three-year period will be automatically disqualified from driving for six months. A lower threshold of 7 penalty points leading to disqualification applies to any driver taking out a first learner permit on or after 1 August 2014 while he or she drives under any learner permit and subsequently during the first two years while he or she is driving under a full driving licence. The driver is required to surrender his/her Irish or foreign driving licence to the National Driver Licence Service within 10 days of disqualification commencing. It is an offence not to surrender a licence. It is also an offence to drive while disqualified. Penalty points remain on the licence record for a period of three years. Tips For Winter Driving

Keep up to date. Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Pay heed to the weather warnings alerting drivers of unsafe and dangerous driving conditions. Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car. •

High visibility vest

Spare fuel

Appropriate footwear in case you need to leave your vehicle e.g. boots

A hazard warning triangle

Spare wheel (Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel. Make sure that you know how to use it.)

Tow Rope

Check your tyres...they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions.

A shovel

De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks)

Spare bulbs

First aid kit

Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order.

A fire extinguisher

A working torch

Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions.

A car blanket, additional clothing & some food and water

Taking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on Irish roads during winter. There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months:

Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. Make sure you can clearly see. All too often motorists do not de-fog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen. Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areas on roads, under trees and near high walls. In the event of a breakdown. Drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so as not to obstruct other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier (on the embankment) and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone.

1967. An Bunteastas agus Saoroideachas 50 Bliain ó shin. Ba bhliain stairiúil í an bhliain 1967 ó thaobh cúrsaí oideachais de sa tír seo. Ba sa bhliain ciniunach san a cuireadh deire leis an mBun Teastas agus gur cuireadh tús leis an Saor Oideachas. Má bhís ar dhuine de na micléinn a dhein an Bun Teastas sa bhliain sin 1967 ba mhaith linn cloisint uait agus teacht le chéile chun dul siar ar bhóithirín na smaointe -- fiú amháin tabhairt fén bpáipéar scrúdaithe don ath-uair. Scaip an scéal agus téigh i dteangmháil le Seán O Catháin ag 0868044416 nó seanocathain6@gmail.com.

1967. Primary Cert and Free Education 50 Years Ago How would you describe your music ? I generally tend to describe myself as Folk Singer/Songwriter. I've been told my stuff sounds like Ed Sheeran, or an acoustic John Mayer. Although my album - Friendly Shores - has a broad range of influences. “Full Circle” is an all out jazz song, “Chapter After Chapter” is a country song, and “Shindig” is heavily inspired by south African music. What was your best and worst gig to date ? My best gig was easily the launch of my album a few weeks ago. The turnout was great, the crowd were in top form, and everyone really loved the night. My worst gig was probably a decade ago. My friend and I were playing/singing in a youth club to other teenagers who were not told there was going to be music present. We sat in the corner for an hour and watched as everyone in the room ignored us.

1967 was a historical year education wise.It was in that year that the Primary Cert was abolished and it also signalled the introduction of Free Education. If you were one of the pupils who sat that famous examination in 1967 or there abouts we would like to hear from you. with maybe organising a reunion to relive those memories and maybe have another go at that exam. Spread the word and contact Seán O Catháin at 0868044416 or seanocathain6@gmail.com.

Who Are Your Biggest Influences? It’s hard to narrow it down to a few people. In terms of inspiring me musically AND lyrically - Paul Simon, Newton Faulkner, Ben Howard, Tallest Man On Earth, Ben Folds, and Ed Sheeran have all inspired certain tracks on my album. What’s Your Song writing Process? Essentially, I’m constantly writing. If an idea comes to me, I write it down on my phone. Some notes I take have just a word or two, some have over a hundred. It’s just a stream of consciousness. Then every so often, I’ll try to piece some together to form the foundation for a song. After enough editing and piecing together, I have the finished product. How do you find the music scene in Kerry? The music scene in Kerry is great. Beyond the fantastic opportunities to play trad music alongside some of the nations’ greats, there’s a real thirst for all genres of live music in the county. Every late bar wants to have bands playing, and there are so many more venues now than there were 15 years ago. A friend of mine told me once that "I fear coming to parties in Kerry because everyone has a party piece and I can't even clap in time to music". Where can I listen to your music ? My album “Friendly Shores” is available to buy/stream online pretty much everywhere. I’m on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon ….. the lot! You can check out my website cathaldowd.com for links or just google me. Conor Browne is the head of Spoken Word for the K-fest Festival. K-fest is one of Ireland’s premier festivals for Emerging Art. To date, the festival has housed over 450 visual artists and approximately 2,000 original works of art, covering paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. In these interviews Conor will introduce you to some of the best emerging Artists born or practicing in Kerry.

Muscle Twitches

Eddie O’Grady

Eddie O’Grady Muscles are made up of fibers that your nerves control. Muscle twitching is caused by minor muscle contraction in the area, or uncontrollable twitching of a muscle group that is served by a single motor nerve fiber. Stimulation or damage to a nerve may cause your muscle fibers to twitch. Most muscle twitches are minor and aren’t usually a cause for concern. Some are common and normal. Others are signs of a nervous system disorder. Causes These may include: Autoimmune disorders such as Isaac syndrome. Drug overdose (caffeine, amphetamines, or other stimulants). Lack of sleep. Drug side effect (such as from diuretics, corticosteroids, or estrogens). Exercise (twitching is seen after exercise).

Lack of nutrients in the diet (deficiency). Stress. Medical conditions that cause metabolic disorders, including low potassium, and kidney disease, and uremia.

Twitches not caused by disease or disorders (benign twitches), often affecting the eyelids, calf, Tom Kennedy or thumb. These twitches are normal and quite common, and are often triggered by stress or anxiety . These twitches can come and go, and usually do not lastwhat's for more thanWell a few days. Spinal muscular atrophy

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Weak muscles (myopathy)

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar When to Contact a Medical Professional to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling Call your health care provider if you have long-term point or persistent muscle twitches or back if twitching of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transoccurs with weakness or loss of muscle. ferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Online Shopping & Import Charges Question I want to do some of my Christmas shopping on American websites. What are the rules about VAT and customs duties when shopping outside the EU? Answer You are importing goods if you buy goods from abroad online or from a mail order catalogue, or if you get goods that are sent as a gift from abroad. In general, when goods are imported into Ireland from a country outside of the EU, they become liable to import charges. These include VAT, customs duty and excise or other duties where relevant. In some cases, you can get relief from import charges. If someone sends you a gift from outside the EU, and it is valued at under €45, you do not have to pay customs duty or VAT. To qualify for this relief, the gift must be of an occasional nature and sent from one private individual to another.

avoid import charges. This is illegal. You, as the importer of the goods, are responsible for ensuring that the information provided is accurate and that all duties and taxes are paid. Some websites may also promise delivery from within the EU, which would eliminate any import charges, but are in fact shipping their products from outside the EU. If this is the case, you are liable to duties and VAT. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Service

Táimíd in áit nua!

You can buy some goods from outside the EU up to a value of €22 without paying VAT. The value is calculated on the full value of the item, plus postage and duties. This is also the value that is used to calculate VAT, if it is payable. If you buy goods from outside the EU valued at more than €150, you will have to pay customs duty as well. Customs duty is normally calculated as a percentage of the full value of the goods including the cost of postage, packaging and insurance. VAT, customs duty and excise duty are always charged on excisable products (such as alcohol, tobacco and perfume) from outside the EU, whatever their value. All packages received from outside of the EU require a customs declaration, which is usually completed by the sender. The declaration should include a description of the goods, the value and whether they are gifts or commercial items. Some websites offer to undervalue your goods to West Kerry Live 49

Up For The Challenge?

Transition Kerry has been active for 10 years, organising public events, delivering educational programmes and initiating workshops on best environmental practice and upskilling for community resilience. This event aims to inform and shape our ongoing climate action work here in Kerry and to strengthen local networks, through our key international, national and local speakers.

Card Game

Ten years ago Transition Kerry asked the question ‘What will Tralee look like in the year 2030’, because we recognised that ‘climate change changes everything’. Now, we have planned this public gathering to mark ten years of working on this transition in Kerry and to strengthen Community Solutions for Climate Change.

Registration is essential. There is a €10 contribution to the event, but concessions are available. Please contact us directly if you need further information or want to volunteer Niamh Ní Dhúill @ 086 7247066 – info@transitionkerry.org.

Community Solutions to Climate Change Saturday November 11th 2017 Manor West Hotel, Tralee 9.30am – 4pm.

How do we create community solutions to the challenges of climate change? On the day, speakers and participants will address how communities can respond and become more resilient in the face of the increasing challenges of climate change. We will look at national policy and mitigation, food security & biodiversity loss, sustainable energy and co-operatives. We will be discussing how we can work in partnership with community groups and government structures; encouraging personal participation and actions. We will have a range of speakers on climate change and community resilience including experts; John Gibbons (Journalist) Dr. Cara Augustenborg (Lecturer in Climate and Environment, UCD) Dr. Margaret Desmond (Environmental Research Institute – ERI, UCC) We are going to have a number of online interviews: Professor John Sweeney (IPCC Climatologist) Rob Hopkins (Founder of the Transition movement in Kinsale over 12 years ago) There will be input from Transition Kerry on our 3-year plan, Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-operative (KSEC) on their work and from representatives who are involved in sustainable local community projects, including Plastic Free Dingle, Kerry Sustainable Energy co-op and Greening Siamsa Tíre. We are hosting this event with Davie Philips from Cultivate and with support from our key statutory partners, including Kerry County Council, the EPA and Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-op. This event is also being supported by Kerry Public Participation Network (Kerry PPN) and Siamsa Tíre. We are planning for a strong local community representation on the day, which will be complemented by key local and national stakeholders. 50 West Kerry Live

It was 1st V 2nd in Div 1B in Kellysheight on Sunday last when Castle hosted St Brendan’s Park, and it proved to be a cracking game. After a very sluggish start Castle found themselves trailing withing the first 10 minutes before they had really even warmed up! However, as the first half wore on Castle began to get a hold on the game and on a very well organised Park side with brothers Brandon & Dylan Hoare grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. The home pressure eventually told when Brandon Hoare scored an absolute belter of a free kick from 20 yards to leave the score at 1-1 at HT. In the second half Castle continued to press and were creating some great chances, with several corners almost producing a second goal. Then came the match winning moment when, after some great wide play involving Damien McMahon & Steve Spiers, Conor Shannon unleashed an absolutely unstoppable shot from all of 25 yards into the far top corner after being set up by Enda Whelan. From here Castle defended stoutly and in fact could have extended their lead but for some good saves from a stand in Park keeper. Overall, a cracking game with two superb goals by the home side and this win sees Castle extend their lead at the top of the table to 5 points with a game in hand. Best on the day: Brandon Hoare (MOTM), Maurice Slattery, Dylan Hoare & Damien McMahon. Goals: Brandon Hoare & Conor Shannon Assists: Enda Whelan Team: Shane Kenny; Cormac Cronin; Conor Boden; Dylan Hoare; Damien

An Triail le

Franz Kafka aistrithe ag

Risteárd Mac Annraoi ‘‘Ní foláir nó bhí duine éigin ag insint bréag faoi Josef K mar, cé nach raibh aon rud as an slí déanta aige, gabhadh é maidin amháin...’ Foilsíodh úrscéal Franz Kafka, An Triail, i 1925 agus faoi seo tá sé tiontaithe go dtí ilteangacha an domhain. Anois tá sé ar fáil i dteanga na nGael don chéad uair, sa leagan seo atá déanta ag Risteárd Mac Annraoi. Díríonn Kafka ar na húdaráis anaithnid bhagarthacha nach bhfuil tuiscint cheart ag éinne ortha ach a stiúrann cúrsaí an tsaoil agus a choimeádann gach ní faoina smacht. N’fheadar an príomhcharachtar, Josef K, ó thalamh an domhain cad chuige a bhfuil sé ar a thriail. An é go bhfuil sé neamhchiontach, agus scriosta ag an stát? Nó ciontach, agus daortha go cóir? Nó an é go bhfuil sé lán d’uabhar, cosúil le frithlaoch i ndráma Gréagach, agus go gciontaítear é as ucht a chuid ciontachta a shéanadh? Ní thugann Kafka féin aon fhreagra ar na ceisteanna seo, ach tugann sé cuireadh don léitheoir dul leis ina chuardach anama agus aigne.’ - Risteárd Mac Annraoi An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979 An Café Liteartha
