Corca Dhuibhne Credit Union Education Bursaries

Tim Finn, Jaic Ó Grífín, Faolán Dáibhis, Paul Geaney. Kerry footballer Paul Geaney presented the two winners of the Corca Dhuibhne Credit Union Education Bursaries with their awards recently. Jaic Ó Grífín from Baile Bhoithín and Faolán Dáibhis from Riasc, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, both past pupils from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, each received €1,500 towards their third level education. This is the first year the Credit Union offered these bursaries and it was an open competition for all eligible 6th year students in the local area. Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne manager Micheál Ó Cinnéide said that the cost of third level education was a huge burden on parents and that he hoped that the Credit Union’s Education Bursaries would help with some of these costs. At the presentation, Tim Finn the chairman of the Credit Union Marketing Committee spoke of the value of education and of the importance of investing in our young peoples’ future, and that the Credit Union hoped these awards would continue over the coming years. Ba mhaith leis an gComhar Creidmheasa a mbuíochas a ghabháil leis na scoláirí ar fad a chuir isteach ar na sparántachtaí agus guímíd gach rath orthu ina saol oideachais amach anseo.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 17th October will be the murder mystery thriller Wind River. The film is a chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent (Elizabeth Olsen) who teams up with a local game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past (Jeremy Renner) to investigate the murder of a local girl on a remote Native American Reservation in the hopes of solving her mysterious death. Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, Wind River is a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skillfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title. The following week on Tuesday 24th the feature will be The Midwife. Two of French cinema’s biggest stars shine in this bittersweet drama about the unlikely friendship that develops between Claire (Catherine Frot), a talented but tightly wound midwife, and Béatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the estranged, free-spirited mistress of Claire’s late father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other as they cope with the unusual circumstance that brought them together in this sharp character study from the Césaraward winning director Martin Provost 4 West Kerry Live

Where compound feed stuffs are being fed at this time, a mineral feed stuff may be included in the ration by the feed mill at the time of manufacture. Otherwise, dry mineral feed stuffs (bagged minerals) may be dusted on the silage or fed with feed materials (‘straights’). Where boluses are used these can be administered seven to 10 days pre-mating to allow for rumen breakdown of the bolus. Receipts and invoices of all mineral feed stuff and/ or compound rations containing the mineral feed stuffs purchased must be retained and made available for inspection and/or administrative check. All mineral feed stuffs must be sourced from feed business operators licensed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine. Mineral feed stuffs must be administered in accordance with the appropriate instructions.

Beef and Carraig Dhubh Stew It is now the time of the year that we start to cook more stews and casseroles. This is a version of a beef and porter stew. Previously we might have reached for a more mainstream brand of porter but for this one I have opted for a stout or porter from one of our local breweries Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne (West Kerry Brewery). I have recently made a stew using their porter ‘Carraig Dhubh’ and the difference was very noticeable, much nicer flavour than from using a more mainstream brand. The more we taste and ask questions of each ingredient we use for any dish will always change how we cook and how our food tastes. To prove this all you have to do is pour yourself a little glass of this porter or stout and then ask yourself what are the characteristics or the flavours that are present and how will this taste in my stew.

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

½ tsp. tomato purée 300ml Carraig Dhubh stout 1 litre beef stock salt and pepper rapeseed oil Method Dust the beef with flour and season with salt and pepper. Heat a casserole pot over a medium to high heat. Once it is hot, add a dash of oil and then add the beef. Allow the beef to brown for about 5 minutes. Remove the beef with a slotted spoon.

minutes. Add in the carrot and leave for another 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent from sticking / burning. Once they have browned add the parsnip and repeat the process. Add the tomato purée and cook for about 2 minutes. Return the beef to the pot at this stage. Turn the heat down to medium, pour in the porter and leave to reduce by half. Add enough beef stock to cover the meat and vegetables. Cook this over a medium heat for about an hour and a half. At this stage, the beef should be tender and the liquid should have thickened nicely. Season with salt and pepper, remove the bay leaf and serve with some creamy mash potato. Enjoy!!!

Add a little oil to the casserole pot and add the onion, celery, bay leaf and thyme. Allow these to brown over a medium to high heat for about 3

You see from the recipe I take about 10-15 minutes to start the stew rather than trying to throw everything into a pot together. The small bit of work at the beginning will always make your stews taste better. Remember to cover the meat and vegetables with the liquid and always keep it to a nice steady simmer. Serve it with a big bowl of creamy mash and you will never go wrong. Ingredients serves 4 500g stewing beef, diced 1 tsp. flour (optional) 1 onion, diced 1 stick of celery, diced 1 bay leaf small bunch of thyme 2 large carrots, cut into large dice 1 parsnip, cut into large dice

Dingle Notes. Richard Williams Events. The stream of events here in Dingle seems never-ending and this weekend we look forward to Folk Fest-- Feile Cheoil Na Ndaoine. The programme features 2 major folk concerts on both Friday evening and Saturday evening in the HILLGROVE HOTEL with music trails throughout the town on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The full programme is available on www.dinglefolkfest.ie and good luck to Dara Herlihy and friends with this fledging promotion. The annual Dingle Maritime Weekend over the Bank Holiday features a series of interesting talks on Saturday 28th at 2.p.m. and 3p.m.and again on Sunday 29th at 12.30p.m. Separate topics based on Expeditions and Maritime History will be presented by different speakers at each session. Transition Corca Dhuibhne volunteers did a tremendous job in their attempts to educate the participants on how to reduce waste and recycle properly during the Feile Bia. Almost all their supply of Reuseable Cutlery and Bowls were purchased over the 2 days and the 3 different types of waste bags on street corners were well manned and properly explained to the hungry revellers. Tidy Towns. We received 5 extra marks bringing our total to 290 in the National Supervalu Tidy Towns Competition this year, The judges visited

16 West Kerry Live

the area on June 14th a full month earlier than the past few years but no excuses there as judging can be between early June and late August without advance notice. The review was very short with little or no direction as to how we may improve our marks under any the 8 categories which are attached to the competition. However it is quite evident from looking at other results that the communities in the more successful towns are away more active and supportive in promoting their tidy towns efforts. We invite all property owners to take a walk around the streets and observe the poor presentation of our town with weeds, grass, cigarette buts along every street and many buildings showing the appearance of very little regular care. Is it too much to ask of every property owner or occupier to take a few minutes every couple of days to clean the area immediately outside their own premises as happens in Killarney, Tralee, Kenmare and Listowel to name but a few. We wish to acknowledge receipt of a grant of â‚Ź500 from Kerry Co Co Community Support Fund to help purchase new timber sleepers for the Mail Road flower beds this year. Conor Pass Traffic. I recently got a lesson on the rules of the road from an angry German on the Conor Pass. He correctly pointed out that the ascending traffic have the priority on all hills despite my protests that courtesy and common sense are the usual Irish answer in such tight situations. Yes the Rule Book supported his argument but in blind corners like on our famous Pass it is sometimes impossible to see ahead or guess what progress the unseen vehicles are making when travelling with

or against you. Business Chamber. The Business Chamber are inviting suggestions on how the Christmas and New Year Programme in Dingle can be improved. A public meeting will be held on Monday October 23rd in the Harbour Masters Office to discuss the 2017 programme or indeed any other suggestions or ideas that will held promote our area for the year ahead.

Teaching junior infants was a real pleasure. I was teaching for 18 years in Dingle. Before Christmas, Santa brought ‘Súgradh’ children’s books. We prepared for his arrival. I explained to the children that he lived in an igloo in the North Pole. All the elves have been very busy all year making the toys for Santa to bring. He comes on Christmas Eve when all the toys are ready. The elves pack the sacks and put them on the sleigh. He has one special reindeer- Rudolf. When he comes near Ireland, he lands in Farranfore. Michael Ó’Connor drives to Farranfore and he collects Santa. When they arrive in Dingle - Main St - near the school he hoots the horn, and when the children hear the hooting, they make a dash for the door and they shout out ‘Fáilte Romhat!’ He sits down and gives out the books and speaks individually to the children. Photographs were taken. The children tell Santa what they would like for Christmas I Loved the teaching - i always looked forward to Christmas while teaching. i worked in three different schools. I thought 1st class in the Presentation in Cahersiveen. I taught in the Presentation in Tralee for 21 years, and I was principal of the Junior School for 7 years. I came to Dingle in 1982. I spent 18 years teaching junior infants which i loved dearly. i retired and went to do organic gardening in Co. Limerick. There were 16 nuns in the convent in Dingle in 1982. 5 of those taught in the primary school. A lot of people don’t know about the tunnel leading from the church to the convent. The Sisters used it to go to mass. It was also used by the communion girls on communion day. That tradition has since stopped. I was transferred from Cahersiveen to Tralee first. Sr Adriana was teaching junior infants in Dingle at the time. I was asked to come in her place. I am so happy in Dingle - I love it here. i enjoyed the football over the years. - An extract from the recent book “When I Was Young / Nuair a Bhíos Óg” by Ciara Ní Bhric, Niamh de Brún, Doireann Ní Choileáin and Sadhbh Ní Bhrosnacháin of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne West Kerry Live 17

Budget-Busting Shopping Tips! Irene Ní Fhlannúra In Ireland, the average weekly spend on food for a family of four is €150 yet according to a National Consumer Agency Survey one third of what we buy is thrown in the bin either having never been used or as left-overs from meals! In money terms this amounts to €50 per week or €2600 per year! There are two ways of looking at this figure. Firstly, imagine if the new budget introduced a household charge of €2600 per year? Riots? Protests? Joe Duffy-mania? Or alternatively, how would you like to be handed €2600 every year as a reward for being more savvy with the grocery shopping, less wasteful in the kitchen while protecting your health at the same time? Here are some ideas on how small changes in the kitchen may lead to more change in your pocket! Shopping Lists – take the time to plan meals for the week ahead and write a shopping list accordingly of the ingredients you will need. Mealplanning saves time spent shopping and wondering what to have for dinner every day. It gives you an opportunity to include seasonal produce which is usually cheaper and reduces the risk of buying food that will not be eaten during that week. Plan at least one meat-free day, as meat equates to a significant part of our weekly food bill. Meals do not need to be complicated and you can also give yourself a day off from cooking by preparing at least one dinner per week that will do two days. A big family omelette towards the end of the week will sort out any bits and pieces of vegetables left in the fridge! Fruit and Vegetables: The most perishable foods in your shopping basket deserves careful planning to avoid waste and to optimize their nutrition value. For most adults and older children - aim to eat two or three portions of fresh fruit and ideally at least five portions of vegetables daily. One cupped hand represents a portion so figure out how much fits in your hand to work it out. When shopping, use this as a guide so you buy enough but not too much. Vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and onions can be stored in a dry, cool place and have a longer shelf life. Leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes last longer in the fridge. Do not store fruit and vegetables in the same compartment in the fridge as a natural-occuring gas called ethylene can build up and cause spoilage to nearby fresh produce. Remove plastic wrappers from fruit and veg when storing as a sweaty bag will shorten the life of your fresh goodies. Most fruit do better out of the fridge, apart from soft berries, grapes and plums. The visible presence of a large bowl of fresh fruit is more appealing and is more likely to be eaten. Fruit can be expensive but if used instead of processed food snacks, you will save in the long run and benefit from the extra vitamins, minerals and enzymes they contain. Soups and stews with plenty vegetables will meet ideal veg intake as well as helping to reduce waste. For fruit that needs to be used up quickly – use early in the week at breakfast or as snacks. Anything fruit not eaten can be thrown into smoothies or compotes so no waste fruit at 22 West Kerry Live

the end of the week. Meat, Fish and Poultry: Most butchers will have offers on certain cuts of meat, which can be used immediately or often, frozen for later use. For adults, a meat portion no bigger than the size of your palm provides your protein needs and any health benefits associated with eating meat. The regular consumption in excess of this amount will impact negatively both on your pocket and your health in the long-term. Make meat go further by adding plenty vegetables, lentils and beans to stews, casseroles and homemade Italian or Asianstyle dishes. Processed meats such as sausages, frankfurters, deli meats, chicken nuggets and the like appear cheaper at first glance but ultimately will cost us dearly in the long-term both financially and health-wise. There is undeniable evidence that preservatives and additives used in processed meat products greatly increase the risk of bowel and stomach cancer. Plan a couple of fish dinners. Your local fishmonger will help you choose the freshest fish depending on your budget and family size as well as providing invaluable advice about storing, preparing and cooking your seafood.

ful planning is key! Shopping wisely with health in mind will see you and your family through these tough economic times but more importantly, will put flavour, colour and great health back on the table! Breads, Grains and Cereals: In Ireland, bread has replaced the potato as our main food staple. However, most of the bread eaten in this country is white, sliced pan. Although it’s cheaper, white commercial bread offers no real nutrition and leaves us hungry and wanting more. You can save money by buying good quality wholemeal varieties of bread, cereal and other grain products as they fill you up and keep you feeling satisfied for longer. Regular home-baking can provide your family with delicious breads and sweet treats without the health problems associated with the over-dependence of chemical-laden fake food such as white bread, commercial cakes, biscuits and cereals. Examine your shopping habits. Whether it is the national budget or a household budget - care-

Cromane Notes Jane Casey Lotto: The numbers drawn on 4th October in the Cromane GAA Lotto Draw were 25.12.19.22. There was no winner of the €13,700 Jackpot. The following were the €40 winners Cathriona O’Leary, Glenbeigh. Ticket sold by Patie Joy. Ronan Geraghty, Australia. Ticket sold by Johnny Connor. Marie Tobin, c/o Fexco. Ticket sold by Jacks. Brendan Breen & Zach Griffen, Mens Shed. Ticket sold by Denis Teahan. Next weeks Jackpot is €13,700. If youre not in, you cant win. Cromane GAA Novice Final: Cromane 1-12, Moyvane 0-12 County champions for our first time since 2007. A strong start to the second half and some mighty defending from our backs set us up for this three-point win. A goal in the 3rd minute have us the perfect platform and by half-time we led by 1-5 to 0-6. This was Cromane’s first county final appearance in ten years, our last time was a Novice final win against other north Kerry opponents, Ballydonoghue at Austin Stack Park in 2007. That win paved the way for one of our greatest wins as we went on to win the Munster Junior B title in March 2008. We now go on to represent Kerry once again in the Munster Junior B competition. Cromane reached this final courtesy of away wins over Clounmacon and Kilgarvan, while Scartaglin were unable to fulfill the semi-final fixture. Moyvane, on the other hand, had beaten Asdee, Beale, and Sneem-Derrynane to make the decider. A few weeks previously we had travelled to Moyvane for a crucial county league game and came away with a six-point win (1-13 to 1-7). We expected a much tougher game in Tralee and we certainly got it. Moyvane were well in the game and the loss of their dangerous corner forward to a red card really hurt them. In the second half three points from Sean O’Sullivan and others from Micheal Shaughnessy and Finbar Casey paved the way for our win. Well done lads! Team and scorers: Paudie McCarthy; Stephen Foley, Eoghan Walsh, Brendan Foley; Liam Teahan, John Michael Foley, Finbar Casey 0-1; Donnchadh Walsh, Darren Houlihan 0-4 (0-3f); Shane Ahern, Emmet Casey 1-0, Mikey Houlihan; Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 0-2f, Micheal Shaughnessy 0-2, Sean O’Sullivan 0-3. Subs: Seán Teahan for John M Foley 29m, Eamon O’Connor for S Teahan 46m, Patrick Moroney for S Foley 52m to 54m (blood sub), Cian O’Keeffe for E Casey 60m, P Moroney for S Ahern 60m, Paudie McMahon, Lee Carey, Martin Sweeney, Danny O’Shea, Danny O’Connor, Jason Clifford, Matt Colborne, and Niall Dennehy. County League Promotion Play-Off: The Cromane seniors have another crucial game this Sunday, October 15, when they play Rathmore B in a play-off to see who goes up to play Division 4 football next year. The game is due to played in Listry at 2pm on Sunday. It will be a tough game for our lads as Rathmore B beat them by 1-12 to 1-10 when they played in Cromane in mid-August. Best of luck to the lads as they aim to finish the year on a high. Under-16s: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-16s begin their Mid Kerry Championship campaign this Saturday with an away game against Keel/Listry. After that they play every Saturday with games against Milltown/Castlemaine (home on Oct 21), Laune Rangers (home on Oct 28) and Beaufort (away on Nov 4). The ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals for the Mid Kerry Under-16 competition are provisionally fixed for Saturday, November 18, in Milltown/Castlemaine. Fixtures: Saturday, October 14 - Mid Kerry U16 championship (round 1): Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane v Keel/Listry in Keel at 3pm. Sunday, October 15 - County League Division 5 promotion play-off: Cromane v Rathmore B in Listry at 2pm. Training: Seniors - Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday this week at 7.30pm at Cromane GAA field. 30 West Kerry Live

Dingle Joins “Fishing For Litter” National Network Dingle has become the 8th BIM Fishing For Litter port to join the national network. Local fishermen have worked together with BIM to address the marine litter issue in an attempt to decrease the levels of marine debris and further enhance Dingle’s status as a popular tourist destination. The announcement comes as the European ‘Our Ocean’ conference begins in Malta, with one of the key themes discussing marine litter. Fishing For Litter is a recognised EU scheme that asks fishermen to voluntarily remove and retain marine litter on board if it interacts with their gear as they go about their fishing. Filled bags are deposited in participating harbours on the quayside where they are moved by harbour staff to a dedicated skip or bin for disposal. “We are delighted that the launch of Dingle as a Fishing For Litter port coincides with the European Commission’s ‘Our Ocean’ conference in Malta. One of the key themes up for discussion will be reducing marine litter and it is great to see more and more participation from industry in addressing this problem. Dingle, the furthest port on the Atlantic seaboard, is a case in point of how much a healthy ocean is important to any coastal community”, explained Jim O’ Toole, CEO BIM. Marine debris has demonstrated serious ef-

fects on beach tourism, with an international study concluding that 10 pieces of marine debris per meter of beach would deter 40 percent of foreign tourists. Overall ecosystem health is gravely affected by the accumulation of litter and plastics in our oceans. Marine debris ingestion and entanglement directly impacts marine life. While marine debris poses a physical threat to marine life, it also causes physical harm to commercial and recreational boats from fouling of propellers and jet intakes as well as damage to hulls. “Preserving our land and seascapes is a priority for a tourist experience and the fishing industry also wants to play its part in ensuring Dingle keeps its reputation of being a wonderful experience both for locals and far flung visitors alike. This news is very welcome and will go some way towards addressing the issue of marine litter here in Dingle”, explained Kevin Flannery, Director at Dingle’s Oceanworld Aquarium. Dingle’s aquarium is one of two in Ireland that has rallied to the European Commission’s call for aquariums to join a global awareness raising action addressing marine litter. Local fishermen such as Peter Hand, harbour master Nigel Collins and the National Inshore Fisheries Forum are also working in partnership with BIM on the project. “Bringing in the marine litter we find at sea is a simple contribution that the commercial fishing sector can make to removing it from the environment, reducing ingestion by wildlife and the potential damage to smaller inshore vessels”, commented Eddie Moore, vice- chair of the

Dingle Whiskey Tasting Peter White And the Gloves are off….. For our next tasting, the Dingle chapter of the Irish Whiskey Society would like to welcome you all to what will surely be one of the whiskey tastings of the year, not just in the town but the entire country! This year we have been very lucky indeed to have had several whiskey ambassadors’ from Ireland’s distillery’s travel to Dingle to present their wares to us and for October’s whiskey tasting, we hope to expand on that theme. IWS Dingle are arranging to have some of them in the same room together and just to add a bit of craic and a further twist to the standard tasting format, are hoping that they will present each other’s whiskeys blind. In other words, they will not be presenting their own brands but those of the other presenters, without knowing just what it is they are presenting. Some of these ambassadors are featured in the latest edition of Irish Whiskey Magazine and we look forward to having them explain to us just what it is that motivates them to do what they do, what their own favourite drams are and just where they see Irish whiskey in ten or even twenty years’ time. As usual, they will be open to questions from our expert audience and there are bound to be a lot of laughs on the evening. Venue: Benner’s Hotel, Main Street, Dingle Date & Time: Thursday, October 26th, 8 pm sharp Tickets: Booking strictly on line at https://www.irishwhiskeysociety.com/page-18106 Strictly no cash at door 38 West Kerry Live

For 14 years Daithí Ó Conaill has been a regular visitor to the beautiful valley of Loch an Dúin. The valley contains at least 89 ancient stone structures including wedge tombs, standing stones, rock art, fulach fia and prehistoric pre-bog field walls. Amongst these monuments is a 4,000 year old tomb in which ancient rock art can be found. On a recent trip to the valley Daithí realised that the alignment of the tomb is far from accidental and it’s entrance is in fact aligned with the setting sun of the equinox. For a few days on either side of the equinox the rays of the setting sun enter the chamber and illuminate a cup and circle motif which had been etched into the rock thousands of years ago. Archaeologist Míchéal Ó Coiléain, himself an expert in the archaelogy of the area, said “Daithí’s discovery is wonderful and it goes to show that people living 4000 years ago are aware of movements of the sun. They are agricultural communities, so to know when the longest days of the year, the shortest, and when the equinoxes fall is so important. To construct such a perfectly positioned monument required remarkable expertise and knowledge.” Photos: Daithí Ó Conaill

Annual VW Trip to The Railway Tavern 2017

Pole Inn in Annascaul for a tea/coffee and then a short spin down onto Inch beach where the whole convoy lines up for a few pictures and then a spot of lunch. After lunch it is back to The Railway Tavern for a few hours relaxation before the ceol agus craic. There will also be an auction for nominated charities, which this year are Down Syndrome Limerick and Meningitis Research. At the auction it is all about having a bit of craic, with plenty of banter, when many donated items, VW themed or anything quirky, are auctioned off to raise much needed funds for these charities. After the auction is over there's more ceol agus craic, before the Sunday afternoon trip home. The organisers would like to thank Mike and Ann O’Neill, who year after year throw open their fantastic pub to all participants with the traditional Kerry welcome, and without whom this event couldn’t take place.

LIKE NEW CLEANING The Annual VW Pilgrimage to Camp takes places this year on the weekend of 20, 21 and 22nd October. Since its inception in 2003, the annual camp in Camp has grown in strength from 4 campervans to up to 60 vans in recent years. Every year the whole event grows stronger and stronger and as a result it has now become one of the biggest VW events in Ireland today. Whether you drive a VW van, Bus, Campervan or Beetle, or even have an interest in the VW scene - all are welcome. Vehicles come from every corner and county in the country and descend on Camp for a weekend of ceol agus craic and plenty of VW chat and fun. It all kicks off on Friday evening for a chill out after the long drive down. On Saturday morning about 11.30am the convoy sets out from The Railway Tavern out the road, up the Conor Pass to the viewing platform to admire the Kerry landscape and then on down into Dingle for a drive through the town. After Dingle the VWs head out to Tom Crean's South

Exercise Induced Arterial Endofibrosis

Eddie O’Grady

Eddie O’Grady This is an unusual condition, but an important one to keep in mind as a differential diagnosis, especially in the case of cyclists. When an athlete bends forward and exercises (say like cyclists), it can put pressure on and/or cause a kink in the arteries supplying the working muscles of the leg with oxygen, sugars and so forth. The artery affected is usually one of the external iliac arteries which supply the majority of blood to each leg, from the heart. The theory is that the longer time spent bending forward and exercising, the more the artery can be kinked and irritated. Over time, the body responds to this irritation by making the artery harder, thereby reducing the irritation to the artery (a good outcome), but this hardening also reduces the blood supply to the leg when exercising (a bad outcome for bike racers). Typically the patient complains of weakness and cramping, ‘bursting’ or aching pain of a single leg only during heavy efforts on the bike. They can’t ride through it, and in fact, the the harder they try, the worse it gets. The onset is usually slow, over months, but extremely consistent. Always with increasing intensity comes decreasing strength. The patient may get treated by a number of therapists often misdiagnosing the condition, and diagnosing some other exotic sounding condition instead. One thing remains constant though; the symptoms persist. A simple, butSystems not always conclusive test that Solar doctors perform is to exercise the patient, then take their blood pressure at their arm Tom measurements Kennedy and at their ankle. In a normal patient these two will be the same or Solar..panels or tubes, difference? both provide similar. In a patient with the problem, the blood pressure inwhat's thetheankle of Well thethey effected hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, leg will be lower (because it is getting less blood). be it oil, gas or electricity.

More invasive tests may follow. Treatment toitcorrect theversus condition involves surgery. comes to tubes panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially Often it is difficult to confirm the condition with absolute certainty. This is important when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. because the surgery carries risk, so you really want to be"solar as system" sure known as possible. There is another in the trade asSurgery "Thermodynamic" this is another a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, involves cutting out the kinked bit and sewing in bit of vein from your leg you ask how! instead, referred to as a ‘’patch’’. Because a veinWell is athebit ‘flimsier’ than an artery, it bends answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way works isit a panel is fittedmaking to your roof a which is connected a bit better. An artery has a muscular wall – which isit why pulses, patch usto a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar ing a piece of artery less suitable. Also you canto‘spare’ a inbit of vein more you what's found a fridge, this unit pumps athan refrigerant gascan into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling spare artery, and as a rule arteries run deep and harder to soharvest. pointare of about -25 Celsius this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Tógaint Leanaí le Gaelainn: Tús Áite Más féidir leat tús áite a thabhairt don mhionteanga (.i. an Ghaelainn) beidh níos mó de sheans ag do leanbh a bheith dátheangach. Muna bhfuil forbairt na Gaelainne ard sa cheann agat sula mbeidh a fhios faic agat beidh an mhórtheanga in uachtar – inár gcásna an Béarla. Chomh luath is a bhogann do leanbh amach sa tsaol mhór beidh sé báite ag an mBéarla – ach má thugann tú tús áite don nGaelainn ó thús éireoidh i bhfad níos fearr le do chuid iarrachtaí! Making the minority language in your child’s early years a priority goes hand in hand with being proactive. If the development of your child’s minority language isn’t one of your family’s highest priorities, chances are the majority language will quickly come to be dominant and the minority language will be relegated to a more passive role. Don’t underestimate how quickly this can happen once the child enters the world and spends the bulk of his hours immersed in the language of the wider community. Make the minority language a priority from the get-go and you’ll strengthen the odds of achieving long-term success.

Flu Vaccination Question: I have been recommended to get a flu vaccination. Can I get it for free? Answer: Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition.

The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: •

Are aged 65 and over

Have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease

Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment

Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40

Are pregnant

Live in a nursing home or other long-stay institution

Are a carer or a healthcare worker

Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs

You can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card, you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Service below.

Kevin O’Brien (lead vocals, guitar) Thomas O’Brien (drums and backing vocals) and DD Foley (bass guitar and backing vocals). How did you choose you Band Name? - We got the name one day when Diarmuid, our bassist, suggested a few names he gathered one evening. At the time we were playing under a different name and we were planning on heading to the studio to mix our first EP. We thought what better time than ever to play under a new name. Who Are Your Biggest Influences? - The three of us share an interest in The Smiths, Interpol and Radiohead. After that we're individually influenced by anything from Misfits to Kendrick Lamar. How Did You Meet? - Myself and Diarmuid met in school, and Thomas is my brother. The three of us played in different bands when growing up and came together near the end of secondary school. Then only a couple of years ago we formed as Deep Sky Objects. What’s Your Songwriting Process? - It can be quite random at times so we wouldn't have a specific process as such. Sometimes I'll put something together on Garageband and bring it to a rehearsal. Other times Diarmuid might have a riff that we'll jam to and will lead to something on the spot. How do you find the music scene in Kerry? - We find that the Kerry scene has thrived over the last few years and is always changing over time. With the likes of Kfest and Puck Fair in Killorglin, and Other Voices in Dingle, the music scene in Kerry is better than ever. Bands from throughout Ireland and beyond want to play here, and that's a fantastic achievement. Where can I listen to your music? You can check out all our songs on Spotify, iTunes and SoundCloud. We've also been releasing music videos on our Youtube channel, where we will be adding more videos in the coming weeks. When is your next Kerry gig? Our next Kerry gig will be in Mike the Pies, Listowel on Saturday 28th of October. We've haven't played there yet but we've only heard great things about the venue so we're looking forward to the night! Conor Browne is the head of Spoken Word for the K-fest Festival.

Tá foireann deas ag mhuintir an Teampaill ach níl aon bheann ag an bhfoireann seo againn-ne ar an aimsir, pioca fliuch nó fuar, ach gan amhras ba dheas le gach duine go mbeadh an lá breá.

Fómhar Samhradh bog fliuch a bhí againn. Sileadh an cuóta uisce don mbliain sa mhullach orainn go luath i mbliana agus le breis agus dhá mhí, bhí an ghaoth agus an bháisteach a’ gabháilt stealladh orainn. Is mó san duine ná raibh aon rian don fómhar sábhálta acu, ach ag braith ar an aimsir réasunta atá againn le deich lá -tá tarrac ar fhéar breá bog ag ainmhithe, ach cuimnigh go bhfuil an féar san ag cur thar maos le uisce. Ní mhaith leat a bheith ag cur droch-mhisneach ar na feirmeórí beaga bochta.Tá a ndóthain scalladh fachta acu. Is minic a chonach droch samhraí ach nuair a théadh an ghaoth soir isteach sa bhfómhar, braití ar thréimhsí geala le fómhar a chur i dtreo. Ní bheadh an caighdeán féir ar fheabhas acu, ach bfhearr é, dá fheabhas fomhar fliuch, nó lofa. Is minic a chuir gaoth anoir an mhí seo, le líon na gcocaí féir agus béil sadhlais a tugtaí ‘n gharraí. Bainne Bhíos ag cur asam, mar a bhí scata, go mbeadh droch phraghas ar an mbainne, rud a bhí, ach go gcasfadh sé, rud atá ag teacht chun críche anois. Bhainfeadh an árdú seo an pian neascóide a bhí ar an bhfeirmeóir agus cuirfidh sé misneach ar lucht táirge a’ bhainne. Gan amhras is maith an cúnamh don bhfeirmeoir na seiceanna ón EECsiad a thug scata tríd an lag phraghas bainne. Is cuimhin liom bheith ag comhairliú gan a bheith ag ceannach bha bainne mar go mbeadh praghas an bhainne le bheith go hainnis ar feadh cúpla bliain, rud a bhí, ach go bhfeabhasódh sé ansan, mar atá tárlaithe. The Autobiography

When Colm Cooper retired from intercounty football in 2017, he left behind a remarkable legacy. The holder of five All-Ireland medals and eight All-Stars, he was Kerry’s stand-out forward for fifteen years. From a family steeped in Gaelic football, and a core member of the Dr Crokes team, Colm was still in his teens when he first played for Kerry at senior level. But the man known nationally as ‘Gooch’ is also an intensely private figure who has never courted publicity and his personal story remains largely untold. Now Gooch: The Autobiography unlocks a peviously unopened door, tracing a compelling path through the life beyond the headlines. Colm Cooper remains one of the GAA’s most recognizable and bestloved figures at a time of tumultuous change in the game. Gooch is the story of an ordinary man who became an extraordinary footballer.
