The Blueprint for Wellness: How our Environment Shapes our Health Irene Flannery

other lifestyle-related health issues. So, what can we learn from these health-centric communities, and how can we apply their wisdom to our modern lives? Firstly, incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets is a key step. Consider adopting the "Blue Zones" philosophy, where regions with the highest concentration of centenarians emphasize a predominantly plantbased diet. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains take centre stage, while meat and minimally processed foods play a supporting role. The Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on olive oil, nuts, and fish, provides an excellent model for achieving a balanced and hearthealthy diet.

In a world where fad diets and fitness trends dominate the headlines, we often overlook the profound impact our environment has on our overall health and well-being. Our environment is not just the hinterland in which we live but includes the spaces we occupy in our homes, workplaces and social lives. In the unprecedented era of modern living, human beings find themselves in environments that, for the first time in their existence, has significantly elevated the risk of chronic illnesses, obesity and premature death. It would be no harm for us to look to the healthiest populations in the world who took the slow train to the 21st Century, who make their own food every day and never go to the gym. These populations have mastered the art of living simply yet purposefully, where making healthy choices is not a conscious effort but a natural part of their daily lives. In examining these communities, it becomes evident that adapting elements of their diet and lifestyle could pave the way for a healthier future in the super-developed, modern societies. Take, for instance, the residents of Okinawa, Japan, known for having one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their secret doesn't lie in complicated diet plans or strenuous exercise routines, but rather in the simplicity and balance of their lifestyle. Okinawans have a cultural practice called "hara hachi bu," which translates to eating until you are 80% full. This mindful eating approach helps prevent overeating and contributes to their lower rates of obesity and related health issues. Another exemplary community is the Mediterranean region, where the Mediterranean diet has gained international recognition for its health benefits. This diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil, is not just about the food but also the way of life. Regular physical activity, social connections, and a strong sense of community contribute to the overall well-being of the people in this region. The emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients not only promotes good health but also benefits the environment and local economies. One common thread among these healthy populations is that the healthy option is often the easiest option in their environments. Fresh, whole foods are readily available and accessible, while processed and unhealthy choices are limited. Traditional diets are centered around plant-based foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, steering clear of the processed and sugar-laden foods that dominate many Western diets. Importantly, their lifestyle and work practices allow time and space to integrate good nutrition into their daily lives. In contrast, Western societies are faced with environments that promote sedentary lifestyles and are saturated with highly processed, caloriedense foods. Fast food joints and convenience stores filled with sugary snacks are often more accessible than fresh produce markets. There was a time, not so long ago in evolutionary terms, that most of the day was centred around activities that garnered food for us. In contrast, we now have outsourced our nutrition for convenience and in doing so taken time away from making food that nourishes us and given that time away to activities that are slowly killing us. This cannot end well! The prevalence of desk jobs and reliance on cars contribute to a lack of physical activity, resulting in rising rates of obesity, heart disease, and 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

In addition to dietary changes, creating environments that encourage physical activity is crucial. Urban planning should prioritize walkability and the availability of green spaces. Communities that foster cycling, walking, or other forms of exercise as part of daily life are more likely to see improved health outcomes. Encouraging physical activity doesn't necessarily mean hitting the gym; it can be as simple as incorporating movement into our daily routines. Social connections are another essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. The emphasis on communal dining in many healthy societies fosters social bonds and reinforces the importance of shared meals. In contrast, the fast-paced, individualistic nature of Western societies often leads to isolated eating habits and gnaws away at the basic fabric of families and communities. Moreover, re-evaluating our relationship with food and the pace at which we consume it is vital. All of ultra-processed foods are designed to be wolfed down without a thought. If we dare to stop and think about what we are eating, it is more likely that we would chalk it down as a bad idea. This is why food processing puts so much effort into the mouth feel, textures and flavour enhancement of its product. Real wholefood, on the other hand, requires time for preparation and cooking and time for eating and digestion. The practice of mindful eating, as observed in cultures like Okinawa, encourages savouring each bite and recognizing when we are satisfied. This approach helps prevent overeating and promotes a healthier relationship with food. We can learn so much from the world’s healthiest populations to reshape our surroundings both inside and outside our homes. In doing so, it is possible to make the healthy choice the easier choice and take the hard work, time and effort out of trying to be well in a harmful, unnatural environment. Embracing a wholesome and mindful approach to food, moving more outdoors and prioritizing social connections are key steps towards a healthier future for Western societies. It's time to learn from the wisdom of these thriving communities and forge a path towards a more vibrant and resilient well-being. Dingle Notes Richie Williams NOLLAIG NA MBAN. A crowd of over 100 people followed the Fife and Drum Band through the streets of Dingle on the evening of January 6th to celebrate Nollaig Mór Na mBan. It is hoped that the business community will build on this initiative and make the evening into a better celebration for the female population who bear much of the work over the Christmas and New Year period. Thanks to the Band members for once again turning out in great numbers and the Gardaí for their usual efficient escort on such occasions. TOURISM. The Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance Charter is a very comprehensive overview and guide on the way Tourism is likely to change and follow in the years ahead. We recommend to all our readers that in this quieter period of the year it is worth taking some time to read briefly or in depth through the Charter which is available on their website www.dinglepeninsulatourism.ie. ROAD SAFETY. The high numbers of deaths for the first two weeks of January remind us all to take more care when driving, cycling, running or as pedestrians on public roads at any time of day or night. Yes we are all responsible for our own safety and that of others also. Thank You. TIDY TOWNS. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee wish to thank everybody who took part in our activities during 2023. Also to those who donated to our funds or by way of contributing services or materials all of which are much appreciated and will be used to make our town an even better place to Live, Work or Visit. Kerry County Council staff have completed upgrading work on footpaths along various streets and roads over the past few months. Hopefully the Town Park will be open for the Easter Weekend as the reseeded areas seem to be progressing well from a quick glimpse over the town wall.

CHARITY CONTRIBUTIONS. Great to see so many individuals and groups from around the area making presentations of large amounts to various local, national and international charities following their fundraising efforts over the past while. Listening to the news on radio and television especially over the past 12 months really brings home to us all how such donations no matter how small can make a huge improvement in the lives of others in all corners of the world. Keep up the good work everybody!!!. PUBLIC REALM. This is a final call out from the Business Chamber to our readers to let us have your suggestions for an appropriate name or title for that wonderful new amenity the Public Realm in Strand Street. We will be passing on your suggestions to the Kerry Council Department who we understand are planning on organising an official naming ceremony later this year. So a deadline of February 1st for your thoughts to 086-8641340 or to risteardmacliam@gmail.com.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest Ted Creedon The majority of articles are taken from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) with the focus on Kerry from the 18th to the 20th century.

Kerry Family Buried Alive -Leinster Reporter, 02 January 1897 A bog on the estate of the Earl of Kenmare, seventeen miles from Killarney and 200 acres in extent, began to move on Sunday night or early on Monday morning, carrying all before it. The house of a land steward with all its inhabitants disappeared. It contained Donnelly himself, his wife and six grown up children. The servant had left the house the previous day. Many cattle and much farm produce have been destroyed. The site of the bog is now occupied by a lake from which a peaty river flows to the lakes of Killarney while the surface matter of the bog continues to move over the land. Some of the bodies have been recovered.

The wreck of the Hebe

A stone, which is inscribed, was found many feet below the surface of the turf bog of Moorestown and he promised to furnish further particulars thereof on a future occasion. (There must be some information on that discovery somewhere. The name Hitchcock refers to the antiquarian Richard Hitchcock who was born in Annagh, near Blennerville, Tralee, in 1825. He became an assistant librarian in Trinity College and was one of the most important contributors to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, formed in 1849. He died in 1856 at the age of 31.)

Lispole’s new church -Cork Examiner, 10 September 1868 The Earl of Dunraven and his party arrived late last night from the Skelligs Rocks which are nine leagues by sea from Dingle harbour. I understand that the distinguished visitors are to travel to the Blasket Islands before their leaving of Dingle. I omitted to report in my previous article that Lord Dunraven and Dr. Stokes both minutely examined the interior and exterior of the new Catholic Church in Lispole and admitted they were very impressed with the quality of the workmanship.

- Kerry Evening Post, 24 April 1846

The credit is due to the contractors Mr. George Burnett and Son. Earl Dunraven expressed his astonishment that such an expensive building could be found in such a remote part of Ireland.

In the height of the storm on Wednesday morning a large vessel was seen off one of the Maharee islands. She appeared to be totally unmanageable, her sails gone and she was drifting fast on the fatal shore.

(This next item is gruesome, even shocking, and not something to dwell on but it brings home the reality of life and death for poor people during the Great Famine of ‘Black 47’ in West Kerry.)

She very soon took the ground where she became a total wreck. The inhabitants of the island were at once on the spot and by their exertions succeeded in saving four members of the crew by means of a line thrown from the vessel to the shore. The remaining five members of the crew were drowned. This ill-fated vessel was the Hebe of Limerick, bound from London to Limerick with a general cargo which, together with the vessel has been lost. The Master and mate are among the four survivors. The Master has a broken arm and the other three are very mush bruised from the violence of the sea. There were two brothers among the crew, one of whom has been lost.

Killed in America

Dead woman eaten by dogs -Dublin Weekly Nation, 1 May 1847 The body of a poor woman who died of fever at Lugnacoppul (sic), parish of Minard, was nearly devoured by dogs last Friday night. Neighbours were afraid to enter the house due to fear of being infected with the fever. There were also two children in the house. One of them died of the fever but they were not touched by the dogs. The body of the woman was so much eaten that she could not be lifted into a coffin so her remains were gathered into a bag. Three more people died of destitution in the same parish on April 18.

Paul's Property Maintenance

-Kerryman, 7 September, 1907 In the big railway wreck that occurred at Lordsburg, New Mexico, a short time ago, one of the victims was Patrick O’Sullivan of Lugnagappull, Minard, a young man who was widely known and respected in his own locality. He was a man who for his talents and gentle straightforward characteristics in every respect, had won for himself the esteem of all with whom he came in contact in the States.

All Jobs Considered

The scourge of the poor is prevalent and fatal in Dingle. There are no less than sixty cases now under treatment in the fever hospital which has been temporarily erected in the town. A correspondent from the west of Dingle writes that “The people there are dying fast of famine and fever. I fear thousands will die before the winter be over. Their starved appearances are frightful to behold. Still, the poor creatures are quiet so that it is a comfort to do anything for them”.

The Moorestown Stone -Kilkenny Moderator, 09 November,1853 Mr. Francis Dunleavy, one of the distant members of the Society, forwarded through Mr. Hitchcock, an account of the recent discovery at Moorestown near Dingle.

The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust wishes to thank everybody who helped to make the recent concert in St Mary's Church, Dingle a success. The concert was held to raise funds for the construction of a maternity unit at the clinic in Cape Maclear, Malawi. The amount raised was almost €6,000. The clinic was opened in 2004.The Trust provides healthcare to one of the poorest communities in the world. Ongoing support from the people of Dingle has been the mainstay of the Trust over the years. This year 2024 we celebrate 20 years providing healthcare to one of the poorest communities in the world. Our services include 24 hour emergency care, in-patient and out-patient services, hypertension, asthma and epilepsy clinics, HIV diagnosis and treatment, eye care including cataract surgery, feeding programmes, childhood clinics and schools bilharzia treatment programmes. The maternal mortality rate in Malawi is amongst the highest in the world. The current death rate per 100,000 births is 400. In Ireland per 100,000 births approximately 6 women die. Maternity services in Malawi are scarce and overcrowded. Women in our community sometimes cannot reach a maternity hospital and give birth at home in isolated circumstances without medical care. This often leads to disastrous consequences. We are now focused on raising funds to build a maternity unit at the clinic. The provision of this unit is the next necessary step in our gradual move to becoming a community hospital. As we begin the next phase of our development of the clinic, please continue to support The Billy Clinic in 2024 and beyond. - Mags Riordan.

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor OBITUARIES On Stephen's Day, the sad news of the sudden passing of Paddy Kennedy, Maum and Dobbs Ferry, New York was received with great shock and sadness in Camp and indeed all over the peninsula where Paddy was well known, highly respected and much loved. A great character with a vibrant personality, Paddy always lit up a room with his larger than life presence. All of the lovely tributes on his obituary page flowing in over the past days show how much he was loved and indeed how much he will be missed by everyone. Paddy emigrated to New York at the age of 19 in 1963, staying with his Aunt Margaret and family. Along with his brothers Jimmy (RIP) and Tom, the Kennedy Brothers Building Contractors was established. Paddy is among one of the most successful businessmen ever to leave his native Camp. He worked hard and achieved so much in his lifetime. Paddy never forgot his roots and his home in Maum, visiting regularly. He loved the land and farming and sheep and cattle and going to the marts and fairs. He came home often for Camp Fair in September. He was a great sheep shearer and could hold his own with the best, even winning prizes with the hand shears at our Community national and local competitions. In 2011 he was one of the Camp 21 team of shearers presented with a special award by local champion shearer, Jimmy O’ Dwyer. Paddy was a loyal supporter of Kerry football too and played football at home and in Gaelic Park, New York in his young days. Deepest sympathy to Paddy's wife, Ann, daughter Fiona, sons Jamie and Patrick, brothers Johnny and his wife Ann and Tom and his wife Eileen and sister in law, Patricia and family and Paddy's much loved grandchildren, extended family, friends and neighbours in the USA and at home. Paddy was predeceased by his brother Jimmy, sister, Hannah and nephew, Pat. RIP. He was laid to rest in The Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne New York on Wednesday following Mass of The Resurrection at The Immaculate Conception Church, Irvington, NY. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal! Rest

Patrick Deane (Deene) of Knockanish, The Spá, Tralee and formerly Curra, Camp, died peacefully on 28th December (in the wonderful care of the team at Aperee, Camp). Beloved husband of the late Bridget Joan (Kiltimagh, Mayo), dear father of John, Joseph and the late Francis and brother of the late John, Brendan & Eugene. Sadly missed by his loving granddaughter Abigail, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Patrick, like many young people of that time, emigrated to England at the age of 17. He was a hard worker and set up his own Building Contracting business and was very successful. In all his years in England, he never missed Camp Sheep Fair coming home every year in September. He loved to share childhood memories of bringing sheep to the fair with his late father Patsy. Patrick loved sheep, he was an early riser, loved the land and worked hard. So it was no surprise that he came back home in 1990 and settled into sheep farming in Knockanish, the Spa. Patrick made many friends in his new neighbourhood and was well thought of in the local community there. Sheep farming and attending Milltown Mart and fairs was his life and he got to know people from all over the County who enjoyed his company and great sense of humour.

Patrick was a good footballer too playing with the Camp team in the 1940’s. An impressive era for Camp Football as documented in his brother Eugie's book on Camp football.

COMMUNITY DINNERS The Seniors community dinners will resume at the old school, Camp on Thursday, 18th. January. For further information please contact Mary Moran - 086 4089504. A lovely social occasion, everyone is welcome! EAR TO THE GROUND The sun shone brightly on the beautiful scenic Maharees peninsula, on the RTE 1 Ear To The Ground programme broadcast on national television on Thursday 11th January last. Local Vegetable Farmer John Ferriter gave a wonderfully inspiring interview citing the challenges to his business in recent times. It is indeed a wake up call to all of us to shop local and purchase this fabulous product, fresh carrots from the fertile lands of the Maharees. There are no air miles or long haul travel from distant places involved, thus also addressing climate change. Congratulations John, well done and may your crops always flourish into the future. You can catch a repeat of the programme on RTE 1 playback, if you missed it last week. BIRTHDAYThere was a huge turnout at The Junction Bar on Saturday night to wish George Edwards well on his 80th. birthday. George, our very popular local gentleman, is hail and hearty and in great form. There was a mighty session of music too with more than 20 musicians and singers taking part. Congratulations George, Go maire tú an céad.

Concluding at the end of the requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP, Patrick's two sons, John and Joe recalled with great affection some lovely memories of their Dad and their late Mom Bridget Joan. Patrick was laid to rest in Camp Cemetery. Rest In Peace. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal! CHRISTMAS TREES Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club will make good use of your Christmas Tree. Want to try something new and fun then come along to Milltown Nagle Rice community centre and have a go at short mat bowls. All you need is just a pair of comfortable shoes for two hours of gently rolling bowls along a 1.8 meter wide x 12 meter long mat. A timber block is placed midway along the mat and the aim of the game is to roll a bowl along the mat, avoiding the block and touching a yellow ball called the “Jack” at the opposite end. A wooden fender is placed at both ends to keep the bowls from rolling off the mat end. Nearest bowl to the Jack after 9 ends scores, the more of your bowls closer than your opponent the more you score. All training and guidance will be provided along with the use of club bowls to get you started.

Once you get going then we have league and cup competitions, friendly individual and group matches along with the opportunity to play other clubs within Kerry. Sounds simple!!! Well the only way to find out is to come along and have a go. President Constrained by Constitution from Supporting Sun Glare Issue President Higgins constrained by Constitution from supporting sun glare issue. An appeal to President Higgins to support efforts to encourage some Government department to highlight the dangers of sun glare is outside the President’s remit.

Open: Mon - Sat, 7am - 5pm Large selection of cakes, confectionery, sandwiches, hot pies, sausage rolls, teas, coffees etc. Wide selection of breads

The appeal to the President was made by retired Dingle journalist Ted Creedon whose wife and sister-in-law were seriously injured in a road traffic accident, due to blinding sun glare, exactly one year ago this Friday, January 19. “Because of the impact of last January’s road crash on my family I decided to appeal to senior politicians and the President for support on this issue”, he told West Kerry Live this week. Ted wrote to the President, seeking his help in the matter and received a response from the President’s secretary, Luke Sweeney, on January 5. “I fully appreciate why you have decided to ask for the President’s assistance in raising awareness about the dangers of sun glare. However, due to the President’s Constitutional position it is not possible for the President to become directly involved with matters which fall under the remit of a Government department,” Mr Sweeney wrote. He continued: “I hope you will understand that it is the Constitutional provisions with regard to the Office of the President, rather than any lack of empathy, which prevents the President from being able to intervene.” “I completely appreciate the President’s position and am not disappointed with the response from the Áras. The President is a good man and I believe he is supportive and compassionate regarding the accident and the sun glare issue, especially when you read ‘rather than any lack of empathy’ in the above paragraph” Ted said. The letter from the Áras concluded with; “The President would like to send his very best wishes to you and your family”. People are killed or are seriously injured as a result of sun glare accidents every year including motorists, walkers and cyclists, according to the Road Safety Authority (RSA). “Sun glare is a threat to life especially during the winter months. The public should be made aware of the danger of sun glare and how to deal with it through state sponsored warnings in the media,” Ted believes.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland On behalf of Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne (CTCD) / Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA), a sincere ‘míle buíochas’ and appreciation for all the support you have given this not-for-profit community tourism alliance. Throughout 2023, the voluntary CTCD/DPTA Council and team, were very happy to support you, your businesses and communities across the peninsula. We were delighted to help you in appropriate promotion when the time was right to do so, asking visitors to take care and be responsible whilst here enjoying the hospitality of our local family run businesses, communities and taking in the stunning landscape, so they could send messages across the world to our international followers, to keep our connections strong, and to share our stories with them along the way. The coming weeks are very important holiday / vacation planning months with significant bookings made in January, February and March. So maybe businesses can partner up to create wonderful holiday packages including accommodation, dining out, local guided tours, land and sea activities, family attractions, cultural and heritage experiences ‘as Gaeilge’ with music, arts and crafts… So together, we can look forward to a busy and successful 2024 What are the key trends as we look to 2024? 1. Local Family run Business Promotion – Pádraig Ó Scannláin attended this year’s Stuttgart Holiday Trade Show over the weekend on our behalf and reported great interest in our Súilóidí Chorca Dhuibhne/Dingle Peninsula Maps (translated Into German), – walks and trails, Family Holidays, Activity Holidays and Golden Breaks. Local food and well-being were of great interest too…. 2. Sustainability - We are truly working to show that we are an authentic sustainable AND responsible destination which in so many ways, we already are. We take great pride in being part of the current EU funded Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism (CE4RT) programme and are extremely proud that of the 18 Irish businesses that were selected through the application process, 10 were locally family run ones from our very own Dingle Peninsula. 3. Community – “Community-based tourism ensures that local communities have full ownership and management of the tourism

experience, so that the economic benefits of tourism stay within their community. Community-based tourism is designed to give travelers an authentic taste of a local community’s heritage, their cultural practices and natural resources, and in this way offers an immersive and rich travel experience.” Intrepid Travel

Chicken, Date and Olive Tagine Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

Skim off a little of the fat and turn the heat down a little. Add a little butter and add the onion. Cook this for about five minutes, add the garlic and cook for a further 3 minutes or so. Add the spices and mix into the onion and garlic. Return the chicken to the pot. Add in the stock and tomatoes, let this cook for about 5 minutes. It will start to thicken a little, at this stage add the chicken pieces, olives and dates. Simmer this slowly for about an hour or so. Check the chicken to see if it is cooked. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Stir in the lemon juice, add the zest, almonds and herbs. Serve with some cous-cous and mint yogurt.

There is something so satisfying when you cook chicken slowly and especially when it is with spices. The aromas around your kitchen will make everyone hungry, but don’t be tempted to try to speed it up. Slow it down and the chicken pieces will be so tender. A tagine should have plenty of flavour and freshness to it, this one will not disappoint.

Bain Taitneamh as!!

The olives will add a little more salt to this while the dates will help to balance it with a little sweetness. Rinse the olives well, this should remove any excess salt. Enjoy cooking this as much as everyone will enjoy savouring every last bit. Ingredients Serves 4 600g chicken thighs with bone in and skin on salt and pepper butter or olive oil 1 onion, chopped finely 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp. cumin seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. coriander seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. fennel seeds, toasted and crushed 1 tsp. smoked paprika ½ tsp. sumac 500ml chicken stock 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 20-30 green olives, pitted, chopped and rinsed 15-20 dates, chopped in half 1 lemon, zested and juiced handful of flaked almonds, toasted bunch of flat leaf parsley and mint chopped Method Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Heat a pan or pot over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and then the chicken pieces. Brown them all over. Remove from the pot. West Kerry Live 25

It’s All In The Mind: Good News, Bad News Orla Smyth

face of stress and the link between hopelessness and depression. We can’t be happy without hope: it makes a difference to our physical, emotional and spiritual health. It affects our neuro chemistrywe all know of the placebo effect when belief can help us to heal. Feeling hope releases endorphins, impacts our immune system, induces healthy habits like exercising and healthy eating: belief in possibility matters, we can’t live and flourish without hope. It is important to distinguish between existential hope and its shadow side; what we might call egoic hope - our wish for a certain outcome, for things to go our way. Egoic hope drives us to grasp and cling to everything we like and love ; it forces us to narrow our horizons and live with the fear of things not working out the way we want them to.

By now, many of our New Year’s resolutions may already have fallen by the wayside. Traditionally, we commit to making changes, improvements, getting rid of bad habits and forming better new ones at the beginning of the new calendar year. However, when we attune to nature and stay in sync with the energy of the season rather than struggle against it, our natural inclination in the depths of winter is to lay low, incubate, give time to rest and restoration, inhabit the slow, dark and deeper side of ourselves, in preparation for the growth of Spring. Instead of planning great transformations or cultivating brand new habits, this time of year is better suited to simply observing, noticing and allowing whatever lies deepest in us to slowly emerge :the seed of a longing or intention to take hold; maybe dropping a bit deeper and connecting with our inner resources, the vital force that keeps us steady, nourishes the spirit; touching base with our foundational beliefs, the core strengths that help us to navigate in an uncertain world. Hope is one such quality that has an important role to play in human behaviour. In the coming weeks, maybe take the time to pause and gently check in with your relationship to hope, just noticing if you feel hope as a solid foundation in your life or as a slippery, elusive quality that doesn’t carry the weight of misfortune or disappointment. There is a growing body of research indicating that hope is crucial to our survival. There is nothing more damaging to our growth and well being than the belief that things are bad and never going to get better. Hopelessness can hold us in a grip of despondency and despair. When we believe there is nothing ahead that we can count on, that there is no intrinsic goodness in the world we lose hope. Without hope ,we lose the will to live. When we believe our efforts are ineffectual and doomed to failure our life energy sinks. On the other hand, hope can sustain us through times of doubt and frustration, through all the ups and downs of political and economical life, of challenges and disappointments in our personal life- hope is a belief in infinite potential, in our capacity to evolve. In his book Making Hope Happen, Shane Lopez refers to studies showing the correlation in workers, between hope and resilience in the 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Take a moment to pause and feel into your sense of hope - is it bound with fear? Would you not be ok if a certain thing doesn’t happen? Of course, self serving, momentary hope is part of our human nature, of how we are programmed to survive but it does keep us trapped in a loop of fear and non acceptance of the present as it is : we struggle against the inevitable natural cycle of life and often end up building castles in the sand. Egoic hope can set us on a rollercoaster of aspirations and disappointments, from optimism to disillusionment : whether we get the job/ promotion we feel we deserve or if we dont pass that exam, get negative diagnosis or positive test results, win the lottery or lose a gamble. This kind of hope feeds into our suffering and insecurity. When we can detach from the fear of unfavourable momentary outcomes, even though we feel the very real and sometimes unbearable pain, it does not touch our inner, innate sense of hope that life is bigger than this. We are liberated from the fear of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ things happening. The following is an ancient taoist parable which, I believe, still resonates today. A Chinese farmer gets a horse, which soon runs away. A neighbour says, "That's bad news." The farmer replies, "Good news, bad news, who can say?" The horse comes back and brings another horse with him. Good news, you might say.

The farmer gives the second horse to his son, who rides it, then is thrown and badly breaks his leg. "So sorry for your bad news," says the concerned neighbour. "Good news, bad news, who can say?" the farmer replies. In a week or so, the emperor's men come and take every able-bodied young man to fight in a war. The farmer's son is spared. Good news, of course. This story relates to a different kind of hope that is not dependent on how things work out for us, it does not come and go, it is deep-rooted and more profound than that. Of course, we are human and we all want things to go well, we want peace and love and happiness but to pin our hope on specific things is too tight and limiting- within our emotional response we can tap into an awareness of a more liberating, bigger picture kind of hope that despite events, does not waver - there is an openness to possibility underlying it all - a trust in the unfolding of potential beyond our understanding or control. The good and the bad are what happen in life, we cannot avoid suffering but, as holocaust survivor Victor Frankl said in Man’s Search for Meaning ‘when we’ve lost much,or even nearly everything, sometimes all we can choose is our attitude in the face of trials’ If you were at the end of your life, looking back, what would most matter? Slowing down and taking time to attune to what really matters frees us from the vagaries of momentary gratification. When our actions are aligned with our true values ,we can let go of the outcomes and trust in the hope that our full potential will be fulfilled. ‘The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for and the most you can do is live inside that hope, not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof. What I want is so simple I almost can’t say it. Elementary kindness’ - Barbara Kingsolver Orla Smyth - certified teacher of the Mindfulness Based Stress Relief (MBSR) and the Dot B. -mindful awareness for children / orlasmyth67@gmail.com

Dfhanamar ar barr an chnoic chun cúpla pictiúr deas a thógaint ach tar éis tamall beag , d’fhilleamar thar nais anuas ón gcnoc go tapaidh arís. Bhí seans againn ár scíth a ligint ag bun an chnoic tar éis an maidin tiursiúil a bhí cuirthea dínn againn, agus ar deireadh thiar thall ar ais linn go teas na scoile. Siúlóid fíor thaitneamhach a bhí i gceist , agus tús maith don chleachtadh a bheidh ar siul againn roimis dul ar an ‘Camino’ i mí na Belataine le cúnamh Dé. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The Bee Sting le

Paul Murray foilsithe i

Sasana Duaisleabhar Béarla na bliana 2023 ‘Irresistibly funny, wise and thought-provoking - a tragicomic tour de force about family, fortune, and the struggle to be a good person when the world is falling apart... The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under - but rather than face the music, he’s spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife Imelda is selling off her jewellery on eBay while their teenage daughter Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge-drink her way to her final exams. And twelve-year-old PJ is putting the final touches to his grand plan to run away from home. Where did it all go wrong? A patch of ice on the tarmac, a casual favour to a charming stranger, a bee caught beneath a bridal veil - can a single moment of bad luck change the direction of a life? And if the story has already been written - is there still time to find a happy ending? - Penguin’

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá ‘samhradh’ geimhridh againn le breis agus seachtain. Cé go raibh sioc againn coitianta ní raibh aon bhaol mór. Níl aon teora le éirí ar maidin agus an ghrian a fheiscint go lonrach fáilteach. Níl aon amhras ach tá croí briste ag mórán de bharr an tsíor bháisteach. Bhí gaoth ann ach ní ro-dhiabhair. Tá na cosa tugtha linn againn rud ná raibh ag pobail eile. Ní bheam ag canrán mar nár luigh an anaithe ró mhor orainn agus le cúnamh Dé leanfaidh an ádh sin. Poilitíocht - thar lear Leanann Putin gránna búistéir na Rúise ag spré buamaí agus gach áis maraithe ar an Úcráin ach níl an tír sin cloite acu agus ní dócha go mbeidh. Tá dream eile i Yemen agus iad ag scrios báid iompair bia agus riachtainisí. Anois tá scata tíortha bailithe dos na síor ionsaithe ar longa agus tá longa cogaidh ag cur tine chreasa leis an ndream seo atá lonnaithe thiar theas i Yemen. An mbeidh deireadh go deo leis an scrios? Ní fada go mbeidh toghchán sa Rúis. Tá ceannaire an fhreasúra seolta dtí príosún sa tSibéir. I Meiriceá tá Trump ar a dhícheall ainmníuchán a shlánú do féin ach tá bean éifeachtach ina choinne. Beidh sé suimiúil. Fear deas ‘sea Joe Biden ach is léir óna aos go bhfuil a cheannaireacht istigh.
