Dingle Food Festival 2017 Members of the Dingle Food Festival committee gathered at Dick Mack’s Brewhouse, a newly opened micro brewery in the heart of Dingle town, to launch the 2017 Dingle Food Festival. The building, an old cowshed dating back over 150 years has been transformed into Ireland’s newest brewery. The 2017 Dingle Food Festival will run from Friday 29th September up until Sunday 1st October. The streets of Dingle will come alive with over 70 different taste trail offerings, over 50 Irish food stalls showcase and sample their produce at one of Ireland’s largest food market offerings. There’s wine, whiskey, and gin tastings, together with cider and craft beer trails. Add in live entertainment, kiddies events, cookery demos and food workshops and you truly do have a mouth watering festival. For the Taste Trail, festival goers purchase books of taste tickets to use on the festival’s infamous taste trail, that run the streets of Dingle. Highlights this year include Dingle Salted Grass Beef Taco with Dingle Farmhouse Cream Cheese Dressing, by the Dingle Cookery School and available at the Carol Cronin Gallery. The Marina Inn offers Seared King Scallops with Jack McCarthy's Kanturk Black Pudding & Parsnip Puree. While Micilin Muc The Bacon & Sausage Maker will be at Fitzgerald’s Centra serving the Micilin Muc Brunch Pot. For kiddies, the Dingle Town park transforms into a wonderland with a bumper line up of activities, including the Finding Nemo Workshop, Kingdom Falconry, a Mobile Farm, Dingle Bumper Ballz, face painting, bouncy castle & Zumba with DJ Nat. All activities are free of charge For liquid lovers, there will be Whiskey, Wine & Gin tastings and also a Craft Beer & Cider Trail. This limited edition pack is available for just €10. The Dingle Food Festival was set up to highlight the vast range of locally produced food on the Peninsula, and to showcase Dingle’s award winning restaurants, while also offering a platform for other Irish producers and chefs to showcase their Irish products. The Dingle Food Festival, now in it’s 11th year is a firm favourite with visitors and locals alike.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 19th September will be the Second World War drama Alone in Berlin. Starring Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson the film is a true-life tale of
courage as it unfolds against the tumultuous backdrop of Berlin in 1940. Otto and Anna Quangel are a working class husband and wife doing their best to ride out the war. When their son is killed fighting on the frontlines, however, everything changes. They begin pouring their rage and grief into postcards emblazoned with anti-Nazi slogans, risking everything to disseminate their messages of protest across the city. But this seemingly small act of subversion rattles the regime, including a police inspector who will not rest until the culprits have been caught. The following week on Tuesday 26th September the feature will be An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. A sequel to The Inconvenient Truth, the follow-up documentary addresses the progress made to tackle the problem of climate change and Al Gore’s global efforts to persuade governmental leaders to invest in renewable energy, culminating in the landmark signing of 2016’s Paris Climate Agreement.

€3.5 billion. The intention now is to further intensify the work in a strategic way.

In November other trade missions to Japan and the Republic of Korea will also take place. This follows trade missions in the past year to China, Singapore, North Africa, the Gulf States, the U.S. and Mexico. Junior Minister Doyle at the Department of Agriculture has also led a trade mission to Vietnam and the Republic of Korea and the country is developing close liaison and a greater presence in many of these countries with offices and Foreign Affaires officials dedicated to working with importeds in these countries as well as other countries both within and outside the EU including Washington, Beijing and Abu Dhabi. Along with this €6.7 million, an additional €300,000 is allocated specifically for market development, €4.4 million towards market promotion and supports in international, UK and other EU markets, €1.6 million to strengthen strategic marketing processes and €400,000 in funding for a two year MSc in Insight and Innovation in NUI Maynooth which was recently launched by Bord Bia.
Carbon Navigations 2017 As with last years requirements for the Beef Data Genomics Scheme, all applicants will be required to complete a Carbon Navigator. This applies to both BDGS I and II. While BDGS II applicants will have their carbon-navigations paid for by the Department, those in the BDGS I will be required to pay their own costs. These will vary from between €100 to €160, depending on their service provider. The closing date for these completed CN’s will again be the end of October. Some will remind you that there was an extension granted to this deadline, which may make you feel that there is plenty of time. However, that was last year, and there is no guarantee that such an extension will be again granted for 2017. Failure to have these completed on time will result in your further participation in the scheme ended, with a 100% clawback on all payments received by you, to date. So, please remember to book your advisor to complete a CN as before the end on October. Review of the Agriculture Appeals Act, 2001 Announced It was recently announced that a review of the Agriculture Appeals Act, 2001 will take place soon. The Departments Programme for Partnership provides for a review of the Agriculture Appeals Act 2001, to ensure the independence and efficiency of the office in dealing with appeals from farmers. In order to ensure that this takes place a Review Committee was set up to carry out this review and report on same and will include recommendations on legislation governing and the future operation of, the Agriculture Appeals Office. This should be completed by the end of the year. In order to ensure that the review is as comprehensive as possible, consultation will take place with relevant stakeholders. As a result, any stakeholder who feels that they have a contribution to make, may make a written submissions for consideration by the Committee. This can be emailed to AgricultureAppealsActReview@ agriculture.gov.ie or by post to Agriculture Appeals Act Review, Corporate Affairs Division, Floor 6 East, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Agriculture House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, D02 WK 12. The closing date for receipt of submissions is 5.30pm onFriday 6th October 2017. For those interested, the committee is made up of three members as follows: Niamh O’Donoghue, former Secretary General, Department of Social Protection (Chair); Padraig Gibbons, former chairman of Connacht Gold and former President of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS) and Paud Evans, former Principal Officer, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Major Market Diversification funding of €6.745 million for Bord Bia This funding together with trade missions to Japan and South Korea in November and the giving of priority to these markets should be key to identifying new export opportunities for Irish food, drink and horticulture companies and producers. This will be a vital future strategy in addressing the market challenges relating to Brexit and is part of a wider strategy, linking the Department’s market access efforts to those of agencies such as Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland, and using Ireland’s network of Embassies as a hub, to develop the profile of Ireland’s food sector and improve access to a wider range of markets worldwide. The funding is additional to the €1.6 million provided to Bord Bia in Autumn 2016 for grants to assist food companies highly dependent on the UK market and the €2 million already provided to Bord Bia in 2017 for increased expenditure on programmes. This announcement is in addition to a number of initiatives already announced by Minister Creed. These included the re-configuration of the market access effort within his Department and the provision of additional resources for this purpose, the development of a new portal website which will bring together in the one location the full range of open markets and products, and the relevant conditions of certification in a user-friendly manner for exporters, and a programme of trade missions to provide an opportunity to Irish exporters to develop a market profile and presence in third countries. The market access efforts of the department and its agencies have already borne fruit in recent years, with the value of exports food and drink to international markets having increased by 13% in 2016 to some 10 West Kerry Live
€367,000 for Social Farming projects Following a competitive public procurement procedure under the 2017 Rural Innovation and Development Fund three successful projects were announced, that will receive funding totalling €367,000, to promote and develop social farming projects in rural areas. The awarding of funding announced is in addition to €350,000 already allocated to Ireland’s Social Farming Network bringing total support for social farming initiatives to €717,000 this year. The first project contract was awarded to the Leitrim Integrated Development Company for the continuation of a national Social Farming Model of Best Practice Project (in collaboration with University College Dublin), with funding of €121,000 and which will continue with the delivery of evidence based learning, best practice and policy recommendations which should contribute to the promotion and development of social farming in Ireland. The second project was awarded to South Kerry Development Partnership with funding of €123,000 for the provision of a Social Farming Project which will offer services for people with disabilities to engage with farm families and the community to meet personal development goals and choices and improve their wellbeing. The third successful award is for Down Syndrome Ireland (Cork Branch) who were awarded funding of €123,000. This will help with the next phase of ‘Field of Dreams’, a horticultural centre for adults with Down Syndrome. The facility is expected to provide hands-on work experience, training and promotion of social inclusion to adults with Down Syndrome. Social farming is the practice of offering, on a voluntary basis, farming and horticultural participation in a farming environment as a choice to people who avail of a range of therapeutic day support services. ANC Payments 2017 With the end of September looming, farm payments are poised to commence with the issuing of the ANC payment to all farmers in disadvantages areas. This applies to all or most farmers in Co Kerry, so all should expect a payment by the end of the month. This payment is roughly €100 per hectare, up to the first 34 hectares, giving a maximum payment of €3,400. All will be aware that this is related to your stocking rate, and is based either on a twelve month or seven month retention period. Those working on the 12-month retention will require a minimum of 0.15 LU per Ha, for all eligible hectares, and those on the 7-month system, such as summer grazers will require 0.26 Lu, at a vary minimum. Therefore, before you decide to sell any livestock, ensure that you have meet your requirements, because if you miss the minimum stocking rate by even one day, or by one ewe, you’ve missed it. If you miss it, there is nothing that can be done, so be sure before you sell. National Ploughing Championship This year, National Ploughing Championships take place at the end of the month in Tullamore. One of Europes largest Agricultural Trade Shows, last year it attracted 200,000 plus visitors, with over 1,300 trade exhibitors. Any farmers interested in purchasing or looking at new technology, or improving breeding stock, be they in dairying, suckling or sheep, this is the place to go, to see the best breeds available in the country. Also, if you have any issues with the Department of Agriculture, they have a well sign-posted exhibit, and it is worth a visit. The staff are
there to help you, and many issues are resolved on that day. Even as a family day out, it is an experience, as long as the teacher doesn’t mind taking the kids out of school for a day. They will see lots, and every kid should experience the NPC, at least once. However, parents should be advised that as with any large crowd event, there are always unscrupulous people who will take advantage of young people. Halloween is also approaching, and some will try to sell fireworks to youngsters. Be vigilant, as these are high dangerous and very volatile, especially when kept in pockets where they can reach body temperature. Serious injury may occur, so be watchful, and safe travels to and from. Sheep Notes: Ewe condition Having ewes in good body condition at mating could increase lamb numbers weaned by 5 to 10 per 100 ewes put to the ram. The target ewe condition at mating is 3.5 to 4 on a five point scale, where 1 is extremely thin and 5 is very fat. An increase in 1 unit in condition score is associated with an increase of about 10 to 12 kg in liveweight. If there is insufficient time between now and mating for these ewes to recover condition they are likely to have a poorer lamb crop and be in poor condition at lambing time giving rise to further problems at that time. For mid season lambing ewes there is still time to improve ewe condition and to have ewes & rams properly checked for health. Go through the flock immediately to select out ewes in poor condition. Ensure these are given top quality grass to improve condition. When thin ewes do not respond to this extra feeding, they should be culled. Old thin ewes lead to lower litter size than ewes in their prime. Furthermore, they cause additional work (inadequate colostrum, be slow in coming to milk, have to be segregated for additional feeding during winter). Very often these ewes are kept as a result of insufficient replacements being retained or purchased. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Scallops, Black Pudding, Carrot, Thyme Butter Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School Good scallops and good black pudding are a match made in heaven. It is worthwhile treating yourself to scallops from time to time. Sometimes people are afraid to cook them and leave them for chefs to cook in restaurants, but you will be surprised how easy they are to cook. They are very rich so you will not need too many for a portion. Use this with some of the fabulous black pudding we have here on the peninsula and you won’t go wrong with flavour.
Heat a large pan over a medium heat, add a little oil then add the black pudding and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Turn the pan to a high heat and add a little more oil then add the scallops. Cook over a high heat for 2 minutes. Turn down the heat and cook for a further 2 minutes.
Add the butter and the thyme to the pan. Season with salt and pepper. To serve Place some carrots in the centre of a plate, add some scallops and some black pudding dotted around the scallops. Drizzle some thyme butter over it. Enjoy!
Serves 4 Ingredients 16-20 scallops, side muscle removed, your fish monger will do this for you (keep the orange bit which is the roe) 200g black pudding, cut into large dice 2 carrots, peeled and sliced 3 tbsp. water bunch of thyme leaves, picked 100g butter salt and pepper oil Method Put the carrots in a medium sized pot, add the water and 50g butter and salt and pepper. Cook over a low heat for 15-20 minutes.

Girl and Goose
Artist - Dora O Connor Dora, from Inch, is part of a group that does textile art in Gáirdín Mhuire Centre, Dingle on Wednesday mornings. Dora’s mother had great skills in crochet and knitting but Dora taught herself embroidery. In class she selects themes familiar in her own life – fox, hens, wild birds, traditional cottages. Una sketches drawings onto báinín fabric for her and then Dora stitches her masterworks. She does a lot of the work sitting by the window in her own kitchen. This embroidery is based on Edith Somerville’s ‘Girl and Goose’ painting. The girl brought her goose to the Somerville’s big house for sale. Only when she delivered the goose did she realize that her pet would be killed and eaten. Edith’s painting shows her sadness. Dora added a brightly coloured traditional Kerry cottage creating a lovely setting for the girl. Our next term starts at 10.30 on Wednesday 20th September and every second Wednesday thereafter. Newcomers experienced and otherwise are very welcome. Fáilte roimh éinne thar aois 60! West Kerry Live 17

CPR: Information Can Save Lives. Nuala Moore As shocking as it sounds according to the Irish Heart Foundation there are "About 5,000 people in Ireland who die from sudden cardiac arrest each year” – that’s 13 lives lost every day. CPR can double if not triple a person’s chance of survival. And between Stroke and Heart Disease up to 10,000 die each year, which makes heart disease and stroke the nation’s biggest killers. Intervention and early recognition can save lives and is possible with education and training. I have been teaching Emergency First Response in schools ,clubs and businesses over the last decade - for me my passion was for schools. Being informed and also understanding scene assessments, recognising and managing CPR are simple skills and can save lives. When an emergency is over, it is so good to feel that you did what you could to help. We don't win every outcome but to give 100% is all we can ask for. Over the years as First Aid has changed from professionals only to more community based - much emphasis was placed on perfect performance, it frightened some people - and many people were afraid of doing something wrong. Now the focus is very much on "it is much better to do something rather than to do nothing". One of our biggest fears is "in the unlikely event that we are needed for an emergency, how will each of us respond?". Doubt and fear can sometimes prevent us from actually realising how 'able' we are, how capable we are of kicking into action and mostly how much information we already have. In the coming months I hope to run frequent courses for all interested groups, from Primary Care in the community, Primary and Secondary care to basic information nights and demonstrations. CPR is a very personal area for me, I am very passionate about first aid and through my own travels, my extreme sports and especially my own personal experiences I have been exposed to many situations as a non professional. Being trained is a simple process, staying current but also having the ability to risk assess and knowing that what we do - can save a life - that is wonderful. There are now many Defibrillators in West Kerry and in June this year I started communications to get all these defibrillators checked and up to date with pads and batteries. It's important whatever area you are in, in a business or a club or just living near by that we do make our best efforts to be informed - where the defibrillators are and mostly how to access them locally. Who is the contact etc. Over the coming months I hope to run some courses locally - for any info contact me – first course starting before the end of Sept. email: nualamooreswim@gmail.com Phone : 086 6049656

Water is Life - Don’t Die of Thirst! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The phrase “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” has been around for some time but what if you led that horse to water and on the way, gave the horse a clear understanding as to why it should be drinking the water? The horse may be persuaded to lap it up and neigh in gratitude. There is a danger that in the current superfood hype, water becomes boring and less appealing to us. Our search for the “best thing since sliced pan” disconnects us from our basic instincts for survival, which is quite ironic, considering sliced pan didn’t turn out that great after all! If we were to strip away all the trimmings of modern living and focused on our survival needs - water, food and shelter make the core list, in that order – everything else is optional! This evokes a sense of foreboding as all three are being constantly challenged in terms of availability, quality and sustainability. In Ireland, water is never out of the news between the Irish Water fiasco, pollution, contaminated drinking water, leaks and scattered showers – not a day goes by that we are not reminded of water. Despite this, we are literally dying of thirst because for most of us, we just don’t drink enough of the stuff to meet our daily needs. The human body is made up of sixty percent water, we are predominately water and without water we would die in a matter of days. While this is unlikely to happen here, there is a real risk that we are placing undue stress on every organ and system in the body by not consuming enough water. Age, exercise, body size, level of sweat, health condition, use of medications and environment are all factors on just how much water we need. The average adult needs to replace just over 2.2L through fluids and foods, a little more than the eight glasses per day. Water is required to regulate temperature in the body, sweating being a good example. Not only does water cool the skin but each bead of sweat takes a little heat away from the body. If we do not drink enough water, are we going to heat up and explode? Probably not, but the body will tire easily and will require longer time for recovery. Good to know if you are exercising or fighting a fever! Water is the carrier of many waste products and toxins via the kidneys and bowel. Dehydration will affect both these organs systems, even at a marginal level. The number one cause of constipation is insufficient fluid supply. High fibre foods in the intestines absorb and hold on to water. This keeps the stool soft, large and easy to pass. If we do not drink enough water, the body will take water from the stool leaving small, hard bits of stool that are uncomfortable to pass. Kidneys are responsible for the elimination of much of our protein waste by-products, mineral salts, toxins and uric acid. Without a steady, sufficient supply this waste can build up and cause damage to the kidneys and urinary system but also affect joints and other parts of the body. The composition of our blood is governed by the kidneys as it keeps it con-

tents stable. Blood itself is made up of about 90% water, an insufficient supply can raise blood pressure and increase the thickness of the blood. Poor hydration levels affect our respiratory system, airways can be restricted to minimize water loss, making asthma and allergic symptoms worse. Water also helps maintain moist airways, prevent mucus building up and loosen secretions in the lungs that may otherwise harbour disease -causing viruses and bacteria. For skin, water is protective both inside and out. A decrease in hydration levels alters skin composition leaving it dry and tight, more prone to damage and wrinkling. Muscles, which are 70% water, suffer from fatigue and tightness when dehydrated making activity harder. Cartilage is 80% water and chronic dehydration affects shock absorption and the protection of joints. The brain is 70% water. Its network of nerves and the spinal cord require fluids to receive and send messages effectively. Small decreases in hydration levels are often felt first in the nervous system with headaches, loss of concentration and fatigue. Bones, muscles and all body tissue and fluids require water for efficient function. Fat, on the other hand just doesn’t mix with water inside or outside the body. This explains why people who have high body fat percentages or obese, are frequently dehydrated and will not re-hydrate easily even if consuming the recommended amount of fluids. Our bodies are ever-adapting to maintain homeostasis and stability. For us to be well, we must tune in to our innate warning system. Listen for alerts, distinguish and act upon the real threats to our existence, which ultimately boil down to water, food and shelter! Now, where did that horse go? As a club we need a presence on social media to be in the game, we feel the need to Tweet, much like Trump, only we feel are news is better. We are naturally so proud of all our players but one in particular has earned his own special hashtag of #honfitzy. Daragh Fitzgerald through huge commitment, hard work and the tireless support of his parents took to the field last Saturday in the no. 3 jersey to play for the Munster u18s. Shane O’Ruairc one of the RCD coaches, who has encouraged Fitzy every inch of the way, created the hashtag to honour this young local hero. Next Sunday Fitzy will take to the pitch wearing that red jersey again in Thomond to play Ulster. He did himself, Munster and RCD proud last Saturday when they beat Connacht 22-7. Not only a huge enthusiast for the game but also a true member of RCD, spending time with the younger players at the recent summer camp held at the club, full of encouragement and the embodiment of early dreams. Daragh has played with RCD for 10 years now, a pivotal member of the u18s his dedication and passion inspires other players. He trains with the RCD u18s and the Seniors every week on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7.30pm on our pitch back west in Carraig. The club motto is ‘Fág an áit (clear the way), Fitzy is doing just that, blazing a trail up the ranks of rugby in Munster and we hope many of our young hopefuls get to follow in his path. The u16s train at 6.30pm on Wednesdays. The u14s and minis train there on Saturdays at 11 a.m., players from the age of 6 years are very welcome. RCD spans the whole peninsula and anyone is welcome to join us. For anyone interest in playing with Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne, or supporting the club, you can email us on cdrfc@eircom.net, you can follow us on Facebook, on Instagram as RugbaíChorcaDhuibhne and on Twitter @RugbaiCorcaD, we really are inviting you to tap and go to our pages. So don’t forget when Tweeting this Saturday and beyond #rcdabú and of course add #honfitzy our rising star!

Éanna Gets Ireland Call Up
Éanna Durham from Riasc in Ballyferriter is set to join the elite group of people who get to don their nation’s colours at an international tournament when he lines out with the Irish team at the inaugural European Amputee Football Championships in Istanbul. Éanna was born with a congenital limb deficiency which lead to an amputation of his left leg when he was 4 years old. He always had a great interest in sport and played football with An Ghaeltacht and rugby with Corca Dhuibhne at under age level before moving over to the UK in 2009 to study Prosthetics and Orthotics in Salford University in Manchester. He graduated with an honours degree in 2013. He now works as a prosthetist (prosthetic limb fitter) in Newcastle upon Tyne and has been living there since 2014. About a year ago Éanna started playing amputee football and has been centrally involved in starting up a Newcastle United team. However it proved difficult to attract enough players to field a team just yet so he began playing with Partick Thistle in the England Amputee Football League. In February he started training with the Irish international team and has been travelling to UL Sport in Limerick every month for training. All the dedication paid off last week when he was selected in the official Ireland squad which will compete in the European Championships. There are also two other Kerrymen in the team, Kevin 'Butch' Cahillane from Killorglin and David Saunders from Rathmore. The Boys in Green have been drawn in a tough group with world champions Russia, 2017 Amp Futbol Cup winners England and newcomers Greece. Their first game is against Russia at 3pm Irish time on the 3rd of October which will be live streamed. Check out the Irish Amputee Football Association on Facebook for details. Go n-eirí leat Éanna!

ing siege sites in the country, as it has never been built upon. Some of the place names in the area also refer to the siege, with ‘Gort na Gearradh’ (the field of the cutting) referring to an entrenchment dug as part of the fortifications (and not the massacre, as is sometimes suggested) and ‘Gort na gCeann’ (the field of the heads), perhaps referring to the place where executions were carried out.
Isabel Bennett
The name of the site, Dún an Óir (the fort of gold), it has been suggested, may refer to stones once thought to contain gold which came from the wreck of the Emmanuel, captained by Martin Frobisher, which sank in the area in 1578. These stones, from Baffin Island, which lies off the north coast of Canada, were being brought back to England but today one can still find examples on the shore below the promontory fort. No formal excavation has yet taken place here although there are some artifacts from the site in the national collection. Some of these are currently on display in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (on loan from the National Museum), as well as some pieces of Frobisher’s ‘gold’. Further information about this, as well as other sites in the area, and a lot more besides, can be found there. The museum is open 10.00 am – 5.00 pm, 7 days a week. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@ westkerrymuseum.com. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop. Tá scéal Dhún an Óir ar eolas ag ana-chuid do mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne. Is dún ceann tíre é atá ar an dtaobh thiar de Chuan Ard na Caithne. Ba ar an 10 Samhain 1580 a tharla an t-ár ana-thruamhéileach anseo. Bhí saighdiúirí ón Spáinn, ón Iodáil agus ó Éirinn ag tabhairt tacaíochta don dara Eirí Amach ag na Gearaltaigh, agus iad faoi cheannas Sebastiano de San Giuseppí, Iodálach. Tar éis léagar trí lá sa dún, fé fhorsaí Shasana, agus an Lord Lieutenant Lord Grey de Wilton i gceannas, ghéilleadar agus maraíodh iad go léir ach amháin San Giuseppi féin agus a chomrádaithe. Tá roinnt do na fallaí cosanta fós le feiscint ar an suíomh, agus píosa dealbhóireachta ana-dheas le Cliodna Cussen ann anois, cloch a nochtadh i 1980, nuair a reáchtáil muintir na háite comóradh 400 bliain Chath Dhún an Óir.

The story of the siege and massacre at Dún an Óir, a promontory fort situated on the western site of Smerwick Harbour (in the townland of Ard na Caithne or Smerwick, as Béarla) is well known in the locality. It was one of the many tragic events that happened during the Second Desmond Rebellion, and many Irish, Italian and Spanish soldiers, who had come to the area to support the Earl of Desmond, were put to the sword by English forces under the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Grey de Wilton and also the Earl of Ormond, and by Admiral Winters (who was in charge of the naval force) having surrendered after being besieged for a few days. This happened on November 10 1580. The Irish and Continental soldiers were commanded by Italian Sebastiano di San Giuseppe, who hailed from Bologna, and who seemed to have ‘done a deal’ with the English, and escaped with his own life, along with a few of his comrades. Visiting the site, a National Monument, today, one first sees a striking piece of sculpture, crafted by Cliodna Cussen. This was erected on the 400th anniversary of the massacre in 1980. This event was remembered with the staging of a pageant, with many local people acting out the parts of the main historical characters of the time. It would be wonderful if any of you had photos from this pageant. We would love to scan them here at the museum, to have a permanent record of what seems to have been a really wonderful community event. The site still contains very obvious remains of the fortifications of the period, although sources indicate that the promontory had probably previously been fortified. It is considered to be one of the best surviv-

What do chefs serve their family and friends for dinner? Find out in Dingle Dinners, a new cookbook that celebrates the chefs of Dingle and their food. Compiled and edited by Trevis L. Gleason, Dingle Dinners serves up three-course dinners for six people with classics like roast duck dinner with all the trimmings, updates of regional specialties such as smoked mackerel pâté in cherry tomato with salsa verde, and, sure to be a family favourite, a pizza party with sweet potato fries. These are delicious, accessible recipes accompanied by mouth-watering photography. The chefs, who run Dingle’s busy restaurant kitchens, also revel in indulgences like fuchsia shortbreads with Dingle Gin lemon curd. Former chef Trevis L. Gleason moved to Dingle several years ago after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and has immersed himself in the foodie culture in Ireland’s #1 foodie town. He discovers how the chefs came to live, work and cook in Dingle, and entertainingly explains exotic ingredients and professional techniques familiar in the world’s best kitchens. The recipes in this imaginative collection share the warm, good-time feel of Dingle and are sure to become family staples and dinner party standards. Indulge in these charming tales of life, cooking and love of place. Dingle Dinners will be launched on Friday 29th September during Dingle West Kerry Live 29

A Dancer’s Legacy in Dingle… Dance Artist in Residence Maria Svensson has twisted, turned, high kicked and utterly enthused younger and older participants in her work as resident dancer at An Lab in Dingle for some months now. Her work is set to continue over a ten week period until October 2018. This will ensure a strong legacy when it comes to contemporary dance in the area. “There is a momentum growing in Dingle, an interest and curiosity amongst people to take part and to learn”, Maria said recently in interview. “Dance creates opportunities for conversation through movement and my work gives a voice to people to explore issues and concerns using dance as the creative focus. I love it and it is such a treat to watch people dance” Maria will be teaching dance in partnership with teachers at two primary schools and with local artists including Zoë Uí Fhaoláin over the next year. She will also be performing on Culture Night at An Lab at 6.30pm with thanks to Ealaíon Na Gaeltachta. The piece is called An Moladh/The Proposal which is based on the theme of being at home. It brings dancers professional and non-professional together, as well as a local film maker. The entire cast is based in the Corca Dhuibhne area. Maria will also provide workshops and social gatherings for local artists and offer opportunities for work to be shared and performed. Moreover she is in the middle of making a new piece together with Cork based dance artist Cathy Walsh, which premieres in February. Maria is instrumental to the Solo Dance Festival which takes place annually in Örebro, Sweden. Together with dance artist Nick Bryson from Legitimate Bodies Dance Company, Maria will direct a similar festival in Dingle 27-29 October this year. The festival is bilingual and inclusive brining local, national and international artists together for workshops, performances and a key note presentation by Fearghus Ó Conchúir. ‘Aonarach le Chéile/Going Solo Together’ will to take place at An Lab 27-29 Oct. The festival will include local, national and international artists with workshops taught by guest artists. Along with The Arts Council, both Kerry County Council and Ealaíon Na
Gaeltachta support Maria’s dance residency in Kerry with An Lab giving venue support. Kate Kennelly, County Arts Officer stated that “Maria’s work in Kerry assists the development of the artform in the County and offers a vital link to communities to create dance and for audiences to enjoy dance at a local level and in local venues”. Maria will be concentrating on the Dingle area but is available to do workshops and mentoring across Kerry on a planned basis, anyone interested in working with Maria and availing of her time should register interest at arts@kerrycoco.ie and requests will be accommodated as much as possible! It looks like audiences can look forward to some great dance events in the year ahead.

In the same venue dancer in residence Maria Svensson has choreographed a poetic movement piece performed by a group of courageous and gifted souls from the West Kerry locality. The piece An Moladh / The Proposal gets underway at 6.30pm and explores the notion of ‘belonging’ using text, music and poetic movement, asking questions about what it means to belong and if it is possible to embody such a thing or idea. The piece is as much a proposal to and by the performers as it is to the audience, as the questions never seem to let us stop pondering.

Think Before You Flush in Dingle! Think Before You Flush is a public awareness campaign operated by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme. The campaign was born out of a need to keep marine litter from being flushed down our toilets, flowing through the sewage systems, swimming through the sea and ending up on our beaches as marine litter. This year Think Before You Flush is running programmes in 9 communities around the country, of which Dingle is one. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Sex. Carpal tunnel syndrome is generally more common in women. This may be because the carpal tunnel area is relatively smaller in women than in men.
Eddie O’Grady
Nerve-damaging conditions. Some chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, increase your risk of nerve damage.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and arm. The condition is caused by compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist. The median nerve runs from your neck down along the arm and through the carpal tunnel to your hand. It provides sensation to the palm side of your thumb and fingers, except the little finger. It also provides nerve signals to move the muscles around the base of your thumb . Anything that squeezes or irritates the median nerve in the carpal tunnel space may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. The anatomy of your wrist, health problems and possibly repetitive hand motions may also contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome. A wrist fracture can narrow the carpal tunnel and irritate the nerve, as can the swelling and inflammation resulting from rheumatoid arthritis. Proper treatment usually relieves the tingling and numbness and restores wrist and hand function. It is worth noting that carpal tunnel syndrome is often misdiagnosed and the main site of median nerve compression can be occurring up at neck and shoulder level. Often by freeing up neck and shoulders muscles and surrounding joints with physio as well as working out muscles down along the arm through which the median nerve penetrates, and loosening and stretching the wrist structures, much relief, often total relief can often be achieved. Symptoms Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms usually start gradually. Numbness: The first symptoms are usually tingling or numbness usually in the thumb, index and middle or ring fingers, but not your little finger. The sensation may travel from your wrist up your arm. These symptoms often occur while holding a steering wheel, phone or newspaper. The sensation may wake you from your sleep. Weakness: You may experience weakness in your hand and a tendency to drop objects. This may be due to the numbness in your hand or weakness of the thumb’s pinching muscles, which are also controlled by the median nerve. Risk factors A number of risk factors have been associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Although they may not directly cause carpal tunnel syndrome, they may increase your chances of developing or aggravating median nerve damage. These include: Anatomic Factors. Wrist fracture, dislocation, or arthritis that deforms the small bones in the wrist, can alter the space within the carpal tunnel and put pressure on the median nerve.
Eddie O’Grady
Inflammatory conditions. Illnesses that are characterized by inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can affect the lining around the tendons in your wrist and put pressure on your median nerve. Obesity. Being obese is a significant risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome. Alterations in the balance of body fluids. Fluid retention may increase the pressure within your carpal tunnel, irritating the median nerve. This is common during pregnancy and menopause. Carpal tunnel syndrome associated with pregnancy generally resolves on its own after pregnancy.
Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat)
Diagnosis History of symptoms, Physical examination. Nerve tension tests. X-ray. Some doctors recommend an X-ray of the affected wrist to exclude other causes of wrist pain, such as arthritis or a fracture. Electromyogram. This test measures the tiny electrical discharges produced in muscles. During this test, your doctor inserts a thin-needle electrode into specific muscles to evaluate the electrical activity when muscles contract and rest. This test can identify muscle damage and also may rule out other conditions. Nerve conduction study. In a variation of electromyography, two electrodes are taped to your skin. A small shock is passed through the median nerve to see if electrical impulses are slowed in the carpal tunnel. This test may be used to diagnose your condition and rule out other conditions. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

Student grant appeals Question I’ve applied for a student grant to start a college course this year but I didn’t get the grant I was expecting. What can I do? Answer Applications for the Student Grant Scheme are processed by Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI). If you are not happy with the outcome of your application, you can ask SUSI to review the decision if there has been a change in your circumstances or if you think your household income wasn’t assessed correctly. You can also request a review if you think you should get a special rate of grant or if you think there was an error in assessing the distance between your home and college (which affects whether you get an adjacent or non-adjacent rate). You can request a review by using the online form on the website susi.ie. You can also make an appeal to SUSI if you are not happy with your final grant decision or if you request a review and are not satisfied with the outcome. You must make the appeal within 30 days of the original grant decision. This deadline may be extended by a further 30 days if the Appeals Officer accepts that you have reasonable cause. To appeal, you complete the form, available at susi.ie, explaining why you think SUSI applied the rules incorrectly. The Appeals Officer will notify you of the outcome within 30 days. If your appeal is turned down you can submit a further appeal to the independent Student Grants Appeals Board, outlining why you believe the scheme has not been interpreted correctly in your case. When you get the written decision of the SUSI Appeals Officer it will include information on how to submit an appeal to the Student Grants Appeals Board. The Board has 60 days to decide on your appeal and will write to you to let you know its decision. An appeal of this decision on a specific point of law is possible and can be made to the High Court.

Other Voices Dates Announced Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd December eir announces second year as title sponsor of Other Voices Festival
now open at www.othervoices.ie/content/open-call and will close at 6pm on September 22nd. Last year, more than 900 acts applied for one performace slot at the IMRO Other Room. The new eir Other Voices Open Call will add authentic value by supporting the chosen artist on their journey to Dingle and beyond. eir’s additional investment will enable the artist to travel, record music and shoot a performance video. Further details can be found at www.othervoices.ie and more announcements regarding artists, performances and events will be announced soon.
It has been announced that eir Other Voices will return to Dingle this December 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the 16th instalment of the worldrenowned TV series recording sessions that reverberate around the ancient walls of St. James’ Church, later edited and broadcast on RTE2 and around the world as Other Voices, Ireland’s longest running music TV series. Over the years a dynamic, eclectic, free music and arts festival has flourished alongside the TV recordings in Dingle, broadening the musical offering, introducing spoken word, artistic and theatrical elements, taking the experience beyond the tiny capacity of the Church sessions and bringing it to the thousands of music fans from home and abroad, who brave the mercurial winter weather of the Wild Atlantic Way to immerse themselves in a weekend of glorious musical diversity. Oisin Masterson, eir’s Head of Brand and Marketing, along with Aoife Woodlock, Music Producer for eir Other Voices, enthusiastically confirmed the second round of partnership on eir Other Voices Festival 2017. In addition, eir has evolved the sponsorship significantly further this year with the launch of the eir Other Voices Open Call 2017, which will make possible the opportunity for one Irish artist to earn a hugely coveted performance slot at the IMRO Other Room during the Festival in December, transmission of that performance on the RTE TV series, along with further music-career support including all travel to and accommodation in Dingle for the duration of the Festival, three days in a recording studio with a top engineer, the production company and budget to create a music performance video, along with practical music industry mentoring from the eir Other Voices team. Aoife Woodlock, eir Other Voices Music Producer went on to announce the first three acts to perform in St. James’ Church: the challenging, intimate and tender sounds of Seattle’s Perfume Genius, desert punk/ blues band Songhoy Blues from Timbuktu, Mali and Cavan’s Aine Cahill, a truly unique writer and performer with Glastonbury and Electric Picnic performances already under her belt at the age of 21. Also confirmed on the night, the news that Dubliner Katie Laffan, Electric Picnic’s Best New Artist 2017, The Irish Times Ticket Awards, fresh from the Other Voices Stage at Electric Picnic, is the first act announced to play the IMRO Other Room at this year’s festival. Other Voices founder, Philip King, welcomed the second year of partnership with eir: "We are delighted to be again working with eir. It was great last year and it's going to be even better this year. Their remarkable technology and their excellent team continue to make Other Voices audible, visible and considerable at the highest resolution locally across the Dingle peninsula, nationally and internationally. eir Other Voices is a natural partnership sophisticated in its ambition to encourage, inspire and give air to the next generation of great Irish artists. It shows what's possible when you connect the periphery to the centre and the centre to the world. It’s a model for where Ireland is heading."

Seán Ó Lúing foilsithe ag
Mercier Press ‘‘His death would tell the world the spirit that was left in Irishmen, and ... that nothing but freedom would satisfy the Irish people, and that they were ready to perish, one after the other, rather than submit to be conquered.’ Thomas Ashe died on 25 September 1917, after being forcibly fed during a hunger strike in Mountjoy prison. Although incarcerated for his political views, he was being treated as a common criminal and was fighting to gain the status of political prisoner. His death helped revitalise the fight against British occupation in Ireland, a fight in which he had already played an extraordinary part. It was Ashe who led the Volunteers at Ashbourne during the 1916 Rising, focing over sixty RIC men to surrender after five hours of fighting. His Fingal men were the last body of Volunteers to surrender when the Rising ended. This is the classic biography of an exceptional man prepared to pay the ultimate price for the freedom of Ireland, a resolve demonstrated by the words he spoke the day before his death: ‘Even though I do die, I die in a good cause.’’ - Mercier Press
