The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 1st December will be “The Queen Of Ireland”. This highly acclaimed documentary film directed by Conor Horgan focuses on Rory O’Neill, better known as Panti Bliss, in the lead up to the historic 2015 referendum on marriage equality for same-sex couples in Ireland. The story charts his rural upbringing in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo through to the early underground scene in Dublin on to his career as the drag act and through to the seminal referendum result. The following week on Tuesday 8th December the feature will be The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, the film is set In a dystopian near future where single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods. Surreal and inventive, The Lobster is where science fiction and dark comedy meet. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News

Farmers Reminded to Submit Genotyping Samples and Survey Data in Order to Secure December Payment Under Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) It is intended to make payments under the BDGP in December to herds who have met their 2015 requirements. In order to be eligible to receive payment in December, all surveys in relation to animals born up to 30 June 2015 must be completed and returned to the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) by 8 December and that all genotyping test kits must be submitted to the relevant laboratories. All BDGP participants are strongly urged to return all surveys and genotyping samples in order to receive payment in December. In the event that all surveys and samples have not been submitted within the specified timeframe payments will continue to be made in the New Year as herds continue to satisfy scheme requirements. The BDGP is a new and innovative measure introduced as part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme, from which more than 27,000 Irish suckler farmers will benefit over the next six years. It’s a world first in terms of bringing genomic technology to beef farming and can revolutionise beef breeding in this country and help to drive on-farm profitability while adding greatly to our national sustainability agenda. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Martine has recently issued reminders to all participants in the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP), urging them to submit all tissue samples and surveys to allow for payment in 2015. Compliance levels among participants are already very encouraging, with almost 20,000 applicants having submitted genotyping samples and practically all participants having submitted some or all of their data notifications. It is essential now that applicants who haven’t yet submitted their data or samples do so immediately, in order to secure their payments this year . Liver Fluke Forecast November 2015 Each year, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) advises farmers in relation to the predicted risk of disease caused by liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection in livestock based on advice received from the Liver Fluke Advisory Group. A liver fluke disease-forecasting model based on meteorological data provided by Met Éireann with regard to weather conditions last winter and rainfall during the summer and early autumn of this year predicts that the risk of liver fluke infection ranges from high risk in the counties with an Atlantic coastline in the North West, West and South, to a moderate risk in the East of the country, less than in other parts of the country. This variation arises from a significantly greater number of days with rain in the Atlantic coastal counties relative to the counties in the east this summer and autumn. June was quite a dry month this year in most parts of the country; however, July and August had sufficient days of rainfall to again provide suitable conditions for propagation of the snail intermediate host. Liver fluke infection can cause ill-thrift in cattle and sheep and, if there is very heavy infection, sudden death in sheep. During the first ten months of this year, there has been a relatively low incidence of acute deaths in sheep caused by liver fluke diagnosed in the DAFM Regional Veterinary Laboratories, relative to previous years (such as 2012). However, due to increased rainfall days in July and August, after drier weather in June, stock owners should remain alert for later onset liver fluke disease during the remainder of the autumn and the winter months. In assessing the risk of liver fluke disease on any particular farm, variation between individual farms in their soil type and whether soils are heavy or free-draining and fluke history must be taken into account, in addition to weather. Livestock owners should continue to be vigilant for any sign of illness, ill-thrift or mortality in their stock and should consult with their veterinary practitioner for diagnosis of liver fluke infection or other cause(s) of these clinical signs. Information from abattoir examination of livers of previously sold fattened stock would also be a valuable source of information to inform stock owners of the incidence of liver fluke infection on their own farm or of the efficacy of their control program. In areas of high risk and on farms where liver fluke infection has been diagnosed or there is a prior history, livestock owners should consult with their veterinary practitioner to devise an appropriate control or prevention program for liver fluke infection for their livestock. It may be noted, that as with roundworms, resistance to flukicides is a possibility. Moreover, as flukicides differ in their efficacy against fluke stages (immature, early and late matures), it is important that product choice to match the stage of development in livestock is considered when choosing a flukicide. In these situations also, livestock owners should also consult with their veterinary practitioner to devise an appropriate control or prevention program for liver fluke infection for their livestock. 12 West Kerry Live
New Webpage Launched Providing Information and Advice on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) This new information section was launched on DAFM’s website, to create awareness and assist people understand AMR. This is key to the Department’s goal of raising awareness of the issue of antimicrobial resistance among farmers, veterinary practitioners and other stakeholders in the agri-food sector Agri-food & AMR aims to provide farmers and all those involved in the agri-food industry with information and advice in relation to prudent use of antibiotics as well as the latest research and publications on antibiotic resistance. Minister Coveney mentioned what he feels will be of particular interest to the average visitor. The webpage also contains the latest publications and reports on AMR as well as conference presentations. In addition, visitors will be able to address any questions they might have on the subject of AMR directly to an expert from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine via an “Ask Our Experts” facility. What Is Antimicrobial Resistance? Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is where the medicines used to treat diseases caused by specific microorganisms are no longer effective. Antimicrobial resistance commonly refers to antibiotic resistance where antibiotics are no longer working effectively to kill or inhibit diseasecausing bacteria. Antimicrobials are a scarce commodity and an essential resource in the treatment of human and animal disease. The rise of AMR is seen as a global public health threat with consequences for animal health, food security and the environment. The development of resistant strains of bacteria is a natural phenomenon, which is very complex and multi-factorial - but excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics increases the development and spread of resistance. Poor infection control practices, inappropriate food handling practices and in particular poor disease prevention strategies encourage the further spread of AMR. Coveney Strongly Welcomes Reduction in Inspection Rates Greater flexibility on Rural Development Programme is required and lower levels of inspections, is a must. DAFM recently welcomed the package of simplification initiatives recently announced. While the details of the new provisions remain to be clarified the Commissioner indicated a planned reduction in the minimum rate of on-the-spot inspections from 5% to 1%, in certain circumstances, and increased flexibility in the procedures for conducting inspections under the integrated administration and control systems (IACS). The announcements were made at a meeting of Council of the European Union Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers. In relation to the increased flexibility on the RDP The EU Commission has been repeatedly called on to simplify the implementation of the CAP and this announcement regarding the RDP will allow Member States such as Ireland amend their Programmes to target specific measures as conditions we operate in are constantly changing. The Minister also called on the Commission to implement market support measures in light of the continuing uncertainty the pigmeat sector and welcomed the Commissioners announcement that these measures will be in place in early 2016. GLAS Tranche II Monday 7th December is the deadline for this scheme. If you are not in, you should seriously considering getting in now. There hasn’t been the rush expected to join, but this is surprising, as many people will still qualify, and do well out of the scheme. Be warned that you cant just park up and enter your local friendly neighbourly advisor and join the scheme. This is an on-line application, and you must first be registered with agfood on-line services. If your herd number is in a joint name, or if you are registered with an advisor who cannot or will apply on your behalf, this will require a paper application, signed by both parties (in case of joint herd number). Many advisors are at capacity, so now is the time to think outside the box. Those still in AEOS II and III may remain in these schemes, and consider their position, next May. The advice is to remain in the old scheme, if there is no considerable financial gain for you, as you are doing a good job, and participating in a good scheme. The old motto, “if it aint broke, don’t fix it” still applies. The Season of Indulgence and Other Vices Irene Ní Fhlannúra Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat - or so the old rhyme goes. It is not only the goose that gets fat for Christmas but according to the statistics, on average we are likely to gain anywhere from two to ten pounds of fat over the next few weeks. Despite good intentions, the holiday season signals “red alert” for the health conscious as clean living meets party season head on! While the town is abuzz with Other Voices prepare yourself ahead of the “Other Vices” that may well have you feeling less than jolly by the year end. A few timely strategies will go a long way to limit some of the health risks associated with this time of the year and minimize the damage that can literally knock the stuffing out of us. Traditional Christmas food, as it was in the old days, was in fact a rather healthy affair of game or poultry, winter vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, herbs and spices. These foods are not only healthier than the processed imitations but are in tune with Winter eating patterns, providing the most appropriate nourishment for this time of the year. Most of the weight gained during the holidays comes from processed foods, both savoury and sweet as well as alcohol. The wholesomeness of the traditional fare allows us to indulge a little, feel sated and know when to stop unlike much of the junk aimed at the Christmas table, laden with toxic fats, sugar and chemicals which keep us wanting more. Get into the real spirit of Christmas and enjoy the wonderful, evocative aromas and taste of old-style seasonal cooking. In times past, digestion was helped along with apertifs (before a meal) and digestifs (after meals). This tradition still remains although many of the healthful aspects have been replaced with gimmicky ingredients. An apertif helps whet the appetite and stimulate the necessary enzymes and acid for good digestion. Typically, the apertif was a dry,
Scouts Collection
bitter alcohol drink but can also be made from bitter herbs such as gentian, dandelion, nettles, horseradish, watercress, parsley, coriander and arugula to name a few. The bitter component of these herbs stimulate the liver and gallbladder necessary for healthy digestion. A herbal version of the apertif is known as Swedish Bitters (or Digestive Bitters) and is particularly good for dealing with heavy, fat laden meals - very typical at this time of the year. Almost everyone has experienced bloating, flatulence and/or indigestion after a heavy meal. These symptoms can be avoided most of the time by eating less and chewing more but sometimes we may need something extra. After dinner fortified liquors such as “Creme de Menthe” were very trendy one time and were not too far from the original digestif. Peppermint, fennel, caraway and aniseed are known as carminative herbs which relieve bloating and wind following a big meal. These herbs are more effective as teas or pure herbal juices than anything you will find in the liquor aisle! Another vice that leaves us worse for wear is the Christmas tipple. There are countless suggestions for curing a hangover but without addressing the true cause - toxicity and dehydration - many people unwittingly prolong their symptoms. A breakfast of easily digestible fruits, some milled seeds or oats for fibre and plenty of fluids will aid the body’s recovery by promoting detoxification and rehydration more efficiently than the highlysalted, fat laden full Irish Breakfast favoured by so many. Herbal teas such as ginger, mint and licorice not only soothe a queasy stomach but also help to rehydrate the body after a long night. Coconut water and electrolytes replace lost fluids and also replenish minerals lost through over-indulging. Alkalising indigestion remedies and herbs such as slippery elm and gentian may also be beneficial. Milk thistle is a trusted remedy for liver support and protection from alcohol, environmental toxins and prescription drugs. Dandelion root, cleavers and burdock also offer support to the liver and detoxification pathways. The skin is a major route for eliminating toxins so a brisk dry-brushing and a tepid shower or bath using essential oils or natural salts will Solar Systems also speed up recovery in time for the next night out! Tom Kennedy Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more ef-
ficient but realistically the difference is small, West Kerry Scouts will be collecting food donations forthan thepanels, home less in Tralee on the 6thespecially of when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. December outside Garveys Supermarket,

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynam-
ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, They will be there singing Xmass carols from 6-7. 30 p.m, all Donations will be welcomed you ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Milltown Castlemaine Video Horse Race Nite: And the flag is up! If you fancy yourself as Johnny Murtagh, Brian Cooper or Patrick Mullins- then our clubs annual fundraising Race Night of Sunday December 13th in O’ Shea’s Bar, is the event for you. Fundraising has long been an important activity for GAA Clubs. As our club continues to develop facilities and provide opportunities for Gaelic Games to be played in our local community, there are ever increasing demands on club finances. As you may be aware the club is in the continuous process of modernising the facilities at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. To date this year, a new entrance with a parking plan facility has ensured that the club grounds is a much safer place. Phase 3 of this project will see provision of lighting in the car park area –as well as the upgrading of the existing floodlights. Our Gaa Club caters for twelve teams at various grades, as well as facilitating the Primary and Secondary schools and the Milltown/Listry Ladies Football Club. In August, Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club ran a very successful Stars of the Future Camp, with over 100 children attending. To continue to offer these facilities and further develop them, we are embarking on a major fundraiser- A Video Horse Racenite. It has been a wonderful success in the past and we hope this year will be even better- with your valued support. The club are seeking race sponsorship: Full Race Sponsor-€200 or a Half Race Sponsor-€100. Sponsors will receive a full page advertisement in the race programme as well as being publicly acknowledged on the night. Sponsors will also be listed on large posters in Milltown and Castlemaine. They will also receive exposure on the Club’s website and Facebook page. Now is the time to head out and purchase your winning horse for just €50.
Drop out from sport is huge in the teenage years due to being "bad" at sport. If children realise that they are really good at some sports or at a particular aspect of a sport then they can go ahead and pursue thatbe it Basketball Athletics, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, swimming…The list is endless and it is important to remember that all sports will complement each other. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our Face-Book Page. Sports First Aid Workshop: Details of this upcoming workshop are as follows: Date: Saturday, November 28th, 2015 Time: 10am - 5pm Venue: Civil Defence HQ, Balloonagh, Tralee If a club or club member is interested in participating in the course, please make contact with Niamh De hÓra by Niamh.dehOra@kerrycoco.ie to express interest. Cost is €20. Alternatively contact 086/1703332for further details.
Looking forward to seeing you at our VIDEO HORSE RACENITE- in O’ Shea’s Bar on Sunday December 13th at 5 p.m. where you can enjoy a pre- festive night out. Finger food will be served and Tote Betting will be available on the night. Please contact any of the club executive should you wish to advertise your business in our Race Night Programme, sponsor a race or invest in a horse for a race. UNDER 21 Final: Hard luck to our Under 21 team who were defeated by the narrowest of margins by Beaufort on Sunday last in a tense and tempestuous game. GAA Lotto Winner: Winning numbers-5, 12, 18 and 27 Our lotto jackpot for €7,800 was won on Friday November 20 Th 2015 by Tom Connolly from Milltown. Tom has always been a great supporter of our lotto down through the years so it has proved a very worthwhile investment. Congratulations Tom and happy spending! Lotto tickets are currently on sale…Just €2 a ticket or 3 for €5. So head off and purchase your lotto tickets which are available from usual sellers and at various outlets in Milltown and Castlemaine and Ballyfinnane. Thank you to all the businesses who promote our Lotto and to our many loyal sellers and purchasers for your continued support of our GAA Lotto. Of course our Lotto would not be possible without our sponsors-Mike O’ Shea and sons-BuildersFarran, Milltown. FUN FOOTBALL: Marcus, Garry and John along with other club mentors have begun FUN FOOTBALL in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. A startling report recently released by the WHO remarked about the level of inactivity among children in Ireland, how sedentary children are becoming and how Ireland's children are going to be the most obese in Europe by 2030. 20 West Kerry Live

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald West Kerry Championship Final An Ghaeltacht 0-12 to Annascaul 1-6 An Ghaeltacht are West Kerry Champions once more after bridging a seven year wait with a three point win over Annascaul in Páric an Ághasaigh last Saturday the 14th of November in the West Kerry Championship Final 2015, An Ghaeltacht 0-12 to Annascaul 1-6. With All-Ireland Scór na nÓg Solo Singing Champion Proinsias Ó Cathasaigh singing Amhrán na bhFiann the scene was set in Páric an Ághasaigh for an epic battle between An Ghaeltacht and Annascaul. Playing against the breeze it was An Ghaeltacht with a pointed free from Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir that opened proceedings in Páric an Ághasaigh after 3 minutes and An Ghaeltacht supporters cheered in anticipation of more to come. Unfortunately for them Annascaul were not following the script and an Eoin Curry point had them level on one apiece after 5 minutes of play. Shortly after, Annascaul played a long ball into the danger zone and
the ever youthful Genie Farrell fisted the ball over An Ghaeltacht keeper Tomás Mac an tSaoir to score the games one and only goal. An Ghaeltacht tried to respond and goal chances fell to Eanna Ó Conchúir and Rob Ó Sé but both shots failed to test Annascaul keeper Tommy Pierce. It was Annascaul with further points from David Clifford, James Crean and Emmet Kennedy that led after 15 minutes of the first half, An Ghaeltacht 0-1 to Annascaul 1-4. An Ghaeltacht continued to try to run the ball through the heart of the Annascaul defence, but time after time Annascaul funnelled men back and stood firm in the face of each attack. Jason Hickson added to Annascaul’s tally on the 24th minute with a pointed free and Tommy Pierce made a great save to deny An Ghaeltachts PJ Mac Láimh just before the half hour. Half time score in Páric an Ághasaigh in the West Kerry Championship Final 2015, An Ghaeltacht 0-1 to Annascaul 1-5. Jason Hickson opened proceedings in the seconds half with a pointed free for Annascaul. An Ghaeltacht rallied and points from play from Pádraig Ó Sé and Marc Ó Sé and a pointed free from Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir left the score after 15 minutes of the second half, An Ghaeltacht 0-4 to Annascaul 1-6. Midfielder Rob Ó Sé began to exert control around the middle of the field for An Ghaeltacht and kicked a good point from play to continue his teams comeback. This was followed up with a pointed free from Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir and a great point from roving wing back Cathal Ó Fiannachta to leave two between the teams with 10 minutes to go. Annascaul continued to battle, but their fighting spirit saw them reduced to fourteen men after midfielder Gerald Lenihan received his marching orders. An Ghaeltachts Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir reduced the gap to one from the resulting free kick.

An Ghaeltachts right corner back Cian Ó Murchú levelled the game on the 22nd minute and An Ghaeltachts left corner back Brian Ó Beaglaoich put them one up shortly after with a fine point from play. Marc Ó Sé playing at full forward kicked his second point to put two between the sides with five minutes remaining and substitute Seán Ó Bambaire kicked a fine point on 30 minutes which was to be the games last score. When Referee Paul Hayes blew the final whistle the full time score in the West Kerry Championship Final 2015 was An Ghaeltacht 0-12 to Annascaul 1-6. Rob Ó Sé received the Strand House Man of the Match award and Cathaoirleach Bord Chiarraí Thiar Muiris Ó Fiannachta presented An Ghaeltacht Captain Colm Ó Muircheartaigh with Corn Tomás Ághas. In his victory speech Colm thanked his teammates, family, supporters and Management team of Paul Quinn, Conal Crowley, Seán Bric, Stiofán Tribolot and Piaras Feirtéar for their dedication, commitment and belief in the team. Colm praised the Annascaul team for the sporting manner in which they conducted themselves and the fighting spirit that they always display on the field of play. Colm paid special tribute to past players from both teams Brendan “Bawnie” O'Driscoll, Tomás Ó Conchúir and Páidí Ó Sé. A moment of silence was observed in Páirc an Ághasaigh for all those that have lost loved ones over the year and for all of the victims of the mindless violence in Paris at the weekend. The Kerry Social Farming project started during the summer of 2013 to help build closer links between the farming community & people with additional needs. In Social Farming, the farm remains a working farm at its core but invites people to participate in the activities of the farm. While on the farms people are encouraged to participate in the farming activities of the day and build relationships with the wider community. The aim of the project was to establish a number of Social Farms in County Kerry which open their farm gates to people with additional needs to come and spend time on their farm and enjoy the experience of being with animals and plants in a safe and friendly environment. Currently there are 8 host farms operating in the project with 16 young adults going out onto these farms every week. There is potential to grow these numbers in the coming years. The Kerry Social Farming project is being promoted through a working group which consist of members from South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd, The festivities will kick off on Saturday the 5th of December North, West & East Kerry Development, Kerry Parents & Friends, St John of God at Harbour House at 3pm with a fundraising talk on Kerry Services, Cunamh Iveragh, Kerry ‘Return to the Titanic’ by Rory Golden Down Syndrome and host farmers. Ponc Press Presents Its First Publication Tor Cotton Labhraíonn Fungie (Fungie Speaks) by Dairena Ní Chinnéide Some things in life are clear, like I must pay my ESB bill. Other things are more organic and feeling -based, more instinctive. When Dominique Lieb told us she was having to sell the Púca Press, Mike, Camilla and I had one response – we all felt that it would be a travesty to see it packed up and shipped off the peninsula, possibly even off Ireland. It felt as if the press belonged in Dingle. Yes, we would buy it and no it didn’t matter that between us we had absolutely no experience in letterpress printing.
scribed as a steep learning curve, we are delighted to say we have our completed our first publication: Labhráionn Fungie (Fungie Speaks) a beautiful poem by Dairena Ní Chinnéide in both Irish and English. The book has illustrations by another local artist, Áine Ní Chíobháin. The book will be launched by the Cork-based poet Liam Ó Muirthile in An Lab on Friday 4th December at 7pm. Dairena will present a performance of the poem and sign copies of the book. For a few years now the press has been situated in Púca Lane in Dingle. We are now looking for larger premises, either in town or on the Slea Head drive. All suggestions gratefully received. Anyone with a printing project they might like us to entertain, an interest in the press, or a suggestion about premises can contact us at printing@ poncpress.ie
Certain we could conquer the world with our 26 soldiers of lead we gaily set about effecting our purchase and renamed it after much discussion the Ponc Press. We had an army of lead at our disposal and we weren’t a bit afraid of it. For those readers not familiar with letterpress, it is how printing was done before the digital age, even before typewriters. Not so long ago, all text composition was done by laboriously typesetting individual lead characters by hand. Items such as newspapers were printed this way with a lead alphabet. Remember the early posters for the Phoenix Cinema? A couple of documents many Corca Dhuibhne residents would be familiar with but without perhaps realizing they are good example of letterpress printing are the Declaration of Independence and early Dingle Races Posters. (I am sure James Curran would welcome you in for a pint to see the latter). The machine itself, a 1955 Heidelberg 10 x 15 platen press, has had many incarnations. It was brought to Dingle from the Dolmen Press back in 1975 by Stan Whelan and took up residence in Dick Mack’s yard. Some of the typefaces were said to have originated with the Cuala Press run by the Yeats sisters. Heiko Rolff then bought it and ran it for a number of years before selling it to Dominique Leib. Since is has been in Dingle it has always been used for publishing as well as small printing jobs. It was in Dominique’s hands that as the Púca Press it took a slightly different, more art-based turn. She started printing small original books in two or three different languages, as limited editions, often with a local content and her own illustrations. Inspired by the artisan quality of those books and much in line with the publications produced by the Cuala Press as part of the Gaelic Revival, we felt compelled to keep publishing limited editions; starting locally and seeing where we go from there. With much joy and excitement, after a year with what can only be de-

Hope Guatemala Book launch The Children of the Finca Florencia Orna Dunlevy & Eddy Dieckmann Friday 11th December 7.30 pm in An Diseart Hope Guatemala, founded in 2005, provides children of plantation workers with opportunities for education, daily meals and health care. In 2013, co-founder Eddy Dieckmann, spent a few weeks In the nutrition and health care centre CERNE in Chimaltenango where he got aquainted with the children and their families who work for the large landowner of the Finca Florencia. They told him about their daily routines which provided the material for this moving book which will be launched in An Díseart in Dingle on Friday 11th December at 7.30pm.
Dingle Business Chamber are promoting Christmas on the Dingle Peninsula 2015 with a festive celebration entitled ‘Féile na Soilse’. This event was hugely successful over the last few years and they hope to build on that success again this year with a number of special events over the weekend to coincide with the official lighting of the Christmas Lights & Tree in the town and the Other Voices weekend. Dingle Farmers Christmas Market will be held on Sunday the 6th from 11:30 - 5:00p.m with fresh locally sourced handmade festive treats a selection of crafts and present ideas , warm drinks and mince pies, a great selection of local foods to keep up the energy levels as you skip from one musical act to the next.
This created a colourful mosaic with beautiful photos and illustrations, consisting of personal insights of their lives, culture, their thoughts and stories. Let yourself be surprised and discover a different world which nonetheless appears to be very familiar at times. A short film (approx. 9 min.) about the children will also be shown on the night. Hope Guatemala would like to thank all who contributed with their service to the success of this book; in particular The Rotary Club Dingle who contributed generously to it’s publishing.
The Lantern Parade itsef starts at 5p.m behind Garveys Supervalu with the Children gathering from 4.30 once again led around by the Dingle Fife and Drum band.

The Irish Language 1961-2011, Nationally And In The Gaeltachts Tadhg Evans The future of the Irish language would be the source of much debate if that debate hadn't already been decided in the minds of many people. Most seem to agree that the language is, at the very least, in serious jeopardy. However, this viewpoint might actually be misplaced. According to the 2011 Census results, 41.4% of respondents answered 'yes' to the question 'can you speak Irish?'. That figure represents a total of over 1.77 million people living in Ireland. The aforementioned figure is an increase from the 2006 mark of 40.8%, and the only census since 1961 that returned a higher figure was in 2002 (41.9%). The figures from 1961 to 1991 were drawn from a question that was more precise, and included the option 'can read but cannot speak Irish'. This may have been why the number of Irish speakers recorded was always lower prior to the 1996 census. However, the pattern of increase still existed between 1961 and 1991 (rising by 4.2 points in those 30 years), with a decrease only recorded in one census in that time (in 1986, following 1981's census).
Since 1996, Censuses began recording more precise data pertaining to Irish language usage. This included a recording of the number of daily Irish speakers. Bar a tiny rise between 1996 and 2002, this figure has since tailed off considerably in the Gaeltachts. In 1996, 39.1% of Gaeltacht inhabitants were speaking Irish on a daily basis. In the last census, that figure had dropped to 33.6%. Again, as illustrated in the below graph, this goes against a general trend of increase in daily Irish speakers recorded at national level. Between 1996 and 2002, the percentage of daily Irish speakers in the Republic of Ireland dropped from 10.2% to 9.1%. Back-to-back increases have since been recorded, and in 2011 had jumped by 4.5 points since 2002. Often, one of the myths attributed to the decline of Irish in Gaeltacht regions is the perception that a high number of non-Irish nationals live in Gaeltacht areas. This is, at best, debatable. The number of non-nationals within Gaeltacht regions themselves is unremarkable against the rural
There are no anomalies skewing these results in the direction of increase. Every single county has recorded an overall increase in speakers between 1961 and 2011. North Tipperary recorded the greatest increase, jumping from 24.7% of its inhabitants claiming they could speak Irish in 1961 to 47.1% in 2011. Where the perception of the decline of Irish may arise from is the genuine decline of the language in Gaeltacht regions. The smallest increases by far were recorded in Galway (a rise of 1.5%) and Donegal (a tiny 0.4%). Interestingly, these are also the two counties with the largest portion of its total area with Gaeltacht status. The next two lowest leaps were recorded in Mayo (an increase of 7.4%) and Kerry (10.7%), two counties that also have sizeable Gaeltacht regions. All these jumps are miniscule when compared to North Tipperary’s extraordinary climb, mentioned above. The boundaries of these regions have undergone no major change since 1967 (when Meath was assigned two Gaeltacht areas), and the status was originally bestowed upon areas where more than 25% of inhabitants spoke the language on a daily basis. 1961 saw the first census recorded since Clare had been stripped of its Gaeltachts. Since then, a consistent pattern of decline has emerged in each Gaeltacht area, bar Meath’s, where an increase in the number of its inhabitants who can speak Irish has been recorded in every census since 1986. 61% of people in the Meath Gaeltachts profess an ability to speak Irish, an increase of nearly 5 points. Every other Gaeltacht county saw its Gaeltachts decline in this regard between the period of 1961 and 2011. The Waterford Gaeltacht and Galway’s Gaeltachts both dropped by 17.3 points in that time frame. In 1961, 93.4% of the Waterford Gaeltacht’s inhabitants claimed that they could speak Irish. In 2011, that figure had dropped to 76.10%. Excluding results pertaining to Meath’s Gaeltachts and the period of anamoly between 1991 and 1996, the other Gaeltacht regions in six other counties have been examined in 7 different censuses. Of the 42 results therefore recorded, only six showed an increase in Irish speakers from a Gaeltacht’s previous census, with the other 36 results noting a decrease. When the second graph is compared with the first graph, this highlights a remarkable pattern of decline in the number of Gaeltacht inhabitants who can speak Irish, something that goes wildly against a national trend of increase.

average of just over 10% (that figure excludes the Dublin region, Cork City, Limerick City, Galway City and Waterford City) Certainly, there is a high number of non-nationals within the Kerry Gaeltachts at 12.7%, and in Galway’s Gaeltachts at 11.7%. However, all other Gaeltachts are below, or well below the national level. Waterford and Mayo’s Gaeltacht’s number of non-nationals is very low, despite their decline. The number of non-nationals in the Republic as a whole jumped from 5.7% to 9.9% between 2002 and 2006, which coincided with a drop in the percentage of population who could speak Irish. But the national percentage of non-nationals increased again between 2006 and 2011, amd the number of people who could speak Irish increased within that time frame. Also, despite that 6.2 point increase in non-nationals between 2002 and 2011, there was a 4.5 point increase in daily Irish speakers in that timeframe. It’s hard to decipher what reason there is behind the decline in the Irish in the face of general improvement at national level. A report by the Department of Education and Skills into education in the Gaeltachts was scathing of the movement in teaching from Irish to English, and a lack of governance in terms of language policy in schools. Other will blame emigration, though the midlands counties have traditionally suffered more seriously than Western counties in that regard. Whether there’s merit in these suggestions or not, the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language 2010-2030 unveiled in December 2010 is faced with the difficult task of reversing decades of decline in the very areas where the language is most expected to flourish.

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs
Deirdre Daly Burdock Arctium lappa Parts Used; Root and leaf Family; Asteraceae Burdock is an important herb in western medicine and similar to the more exotic herbs, such as, Ginseng, Astragalus and Withania, is considered to be an adaptogen. This term is used to denote any herb that helps the body to ‘adapt’ to a new strain of stress be it physical or emotional by stimulating the body’s defence mechanism. Most of the adaptogens hail from Asian countries so it is comforting to know we have our very own adaptogen herb growing here. There are potentially more such herbs available to us here in Ireland but unfortunately no research funding is available unlike Asian countries where research is funded. This distinctive plant can be seen along the hedgerows of Corca Dhuibhne and it is the root that is used mostly, though the leaves can be used medicinally also. It is a biennial plant with a rosette of very large leaves forming in the first year as the root begins to develop. In the second year the stems grow up to two meters and purple thistlelike flowers appear. The root can develop up to 5 or 6 centimetres in diameter, which extend vertically into the ground to a depth of one metre. I did attempt to dig up one or two of the plants a few years ago but the ground was too hard and I had little success. You can however grow this plant in your garden and one tip I read is too use raised beds allowing you to harvest the root more easily, which can then be used fresh or dried and stored for use in the winter. You can of course buy the dried root and I do stock a wide range of herbs, seeds and roots here in the shop. While foraging is fun and very satisfying it is not always possible to forage for all your needs. Dried herbs and roots are
potent medicines and a great way to preserve and use herbs throughout the seasons. Burdock is one of the most powerful and reliable blood tonics in herbalism and because of this the herb can be used for many skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, boils and acne. It also helps to clear uric acid from the body and as I have discussed before conditions such as gout, rheumatism, and arthritis will all benefit as excess uric acid is broken down. This is supported by the herb’s diuretic action helping the body to expel the uric acid from the body. To complement this action dandelion leaf together with burdock is a great combination. Burdock has also shown anti-tumour activity and is the primary herb used in Rene Caisse’s four herb formula for fighting cancer. As an adaptogenic herb Burdock helps the body to cope with stress and improve the immune system by increasing the body’s resilience. In summary burdock has the ability to move the body to normal health as it restores, eliminates and regulates systemic imbalances. Harvesting the Root As burdock is a biennial the root needs to be dug at the end of the first year or in the spring of the second year Preparations and Dosage: Decoction and tincture can be taken. Decoction 1 tsp of root per cup three times a day (as burdock is a detox remedy it is best to build the dosage to three cups a day gradually) Tincture 2-4ml three times a day Safety considerations: Potentially those with a sensitivity to the Aesteraceae family may have an allergic reaction to this plant. As the herb is a strong detox remedy it is not advised when pregnant Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, ‘Nature’s Knowledge’, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, consultations and treatments. He is the author of more than fifty books, including collections of poetry in English and Irish, as well as several collections of verse for children. He has translated extensively from Irish and has edited a number of anthologies of poetry.
Is é seo an teideal ar leabhar nua de chuid an údair ó Dhún Chaoin, Mícheál de Mórdha, atá le foilsiú i dtús mhí na Nollag ag ‘The Liberties Press’, Baile Átha Cliath. Is aistriúchán é ar an leabhar’ Scéal agus Dán Oileáin’ a sheol de Mórdha sa bhliain 2012. File agus údar Mhaigh Mheáin, i gCiarraí Thuaidh, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, a rinne an t-aistriúchán. Stair shóisialta an Bhlascaoid Móir atá mar théama sa leabhar toirtiúil seo agus tá sé i gceist é a bheith mar ‘bhíobla’ acu siúd ar fad atá nó a bheidh ag déanamh staidéir ar phobal an Bhlascaoid Mhóir. Seolfaidh Máire Ní Shúilleabháin Uí Chíobháin (iníon Mhuiris Uí Shúilleabháin, an t-é a scríobh ‘Fiche Blian Ag Fás’) é ag ócáid foilsithe sa Dingle Distillery, ar a 7.30pm ar an Aoine, 11 Nollaig seo chugainn. The above headline is the title of Mícheal de Mórdha’s new tome, which is to be published in early December by ‘The Liberties Press’, Dublin. This new book is a faithful translation, by Gabriel Fitzmaurice, from Moyvane, North Kerry, of de Mórdha’s original treatment of the social history of Great Blasket, entitled ‘Scéal agus Dán Oileain’ and published in 2012. It is being offered as a reference source to all those interested in the Blasket Island story. Ms. Máire Sullivan Kavanagh (daughter of Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, author of ‘Fiche Bliain ag Fás’) is to officially launch the book at a reception in ‘The Dingle Distillery’, Milltown, Dingle, at 7.30 pm on Friday, 11 December. Mr. Jimmy Deenihan, T.D. Minister for the Diaspora and Dr. Declan Downey, of The School of History, UCD, and a plethora of local singers and musicians have confirmed that they will be in attendance. Even at its peak, when its fishermen in their little naomhóga were hauling in nets bursting with mackerel, the population never reached 200 souls. It was abandoned in 1953. Yet there is something about this little island and its Irish-speaking inhabitants that has fascinated Ireland and the world. Writers and poets from the Great Blasket, from Ireland and from abroad documented life there. TDs in the Dáil in Dublin debated its affairs, and so did MPs in Parliament in London. Taoiseach Éamon de Valera visited twice. In this book, originally published in Irish as Scéal agus Dán Oileáin, the author draws on personal experience, interviews with islanders, and a wealth of other sources to present a textured, comprehensive social and cultural history of this fabled island.

Cycling Ireland Licence holders can sign on for €15 with non-members sign on costing €17. This includes hot showers and food on the cyclists return to Killorglin. The Hamper Rides are essentially a fun event allowing cyclists to have a leisurely spin or for the more competitive riders a nice lung-opener. The event has become hugely popular over the last few years and is renowned far and wide as one of the most enjoyable social days out for cyclists in the county. While everyone is welcome to take part in the Killorglin Cycling Club Hamper Rides children under 16 must ride with an accompanying adult and are restricted to the 50km route. The 50km route starts in Killorglin and heads to Killarney, onto Farranfore, Firies, Castlemaine and Milltown before returning to Killorglin. The 75km is more testing and it follows the same route to Farranfore but then continues towards Tralee turning off for Farmers Bridge with the climb up to the main Tralee to Killorglin road and then back to the start via Castlemaine and Milltown. Both events are controlled by a pace car for approximately two thirds of the route, depending on conditions. The controls are lifted at Firies for the shorter route and Farmers Bridge on the 75km route and all are free to get home as fast as possible from there. While the event is not a race the first 3 riders home from the 75km with have their choice of hamper with the first rider home from the 50km will choose next. After that all the remaining prizes will be drawn from the sign on numbers.

passing close to it because it was completely covered in weeds, bushes and ivy. The writer of this piece visited Jack Brosnan to talk about the bridge and saw the photographs mentioned above. An appeal was made to the Local Authority to have the bridge cleaned up in 1980 as part of the commemorations of the massacre at Dún an Óir in 1580. This was done and a parking area was also provided. An appeal to the Office of Public Works to restore and preserve the bridge was also successful. A unique monument of the past has, hopefully, been preserved for the future.

The article below first appeared in The Dingle Echo, the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin, in the winter of 1985/’86.
GARFINNY BRIDGE One of the most beautiful but little-known ancient structures on the peninsula is to be preserved as a National Monument. This is the stone-arched bridge which spans the river Garfinny, located about three miles from Dingle on the old high road. The bridge was cleaned and restored by the Office of Public Works last year and we’re told that it will be the first bridge to be taken into State care as an individual monument. About 150 years ago Samuel Lewis noted the bridge when compiling his book ‘A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland’. He wrote: ‘From its high arched form it has been termed the Rainbow bridge and is evidently of great antiquity’. Nobody in the locality calls it the Rainbow bridge today but just how old can it be? There are vague references in folklore to Walter Raleigh, Lord Grey and others having crossed the bridge on their way to Dún an Óir in 1580 but no evidence for this. Father Jackie McKenna believes it to be older than the old bridge at Castlemaine which was built in 1224 A.D. and removed some years ago. Could Garfinny bridge be over 700 years old? Fr. McKenna also came across a reference to the bridge in the papers of Pádraig Ferriter, in the UCD archives which said the bridge ‘ was built by the monks of Garfinny’. We know nothing about them. Perhaps they were connected with Garfinny Church which is said to have stood in the old cemetery - possibly 14th or 15th century. Possibly. Maybe. Might have been. All too vague. It’s a great pity that it can’t be reliably dated. There’s always the possibility that the original structure collapsed at some stage, perhaps more than once, and was repaired. This would make dating more difficult. Around 25 years ago the bridge was cleaned by the County Council for some unknown reason. Jack Brosnan, from Ballybowler, now 85 and living in the Grove in Dingle, took some excellent photos of the bridge after it was cleaned. But by 1978 the bridge could not be seen by anybody 44 West Kerry Live

Slow cooked Pork in Milk with Braised Leeks Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School This is comfort food at its best. The idea of cooking pork in milk can be traced back to Roman times and versions of it can be found throughout Europe. The milk helps to tenderise the meat beautifully and helps to make a wonderful curdled sauce. You can change this recipe for a tougher cut like a shoulder of pork and allow it to cook for a longer period and top up the milk if it is starting to disappear. This recipe makes an ideal winter Sunday lunch, and leftovers are perfect for sandwiches the following day. Braised leeks are a perfect accompaniment for this dish, by braising them slowly it make the leeks so tender and soak in a lot of the flavour from the stock. Ingredients For the Pork 1 kg loin of pork 1-tablespoon olive oil
2 onions, peeled and chopped roughly 3-4 cloves of Garlic Bunch of Sage 1.5 l milk 250ml cream Salt and Pepper For the Leeks 2 large leeks washed and cut into 2inch lengths Bunch of thyme 150ml chicken stock 1 bay leaf 1 clove of garlic peeled and sliced knob of butter Salt and pepper Method Rub the pork with salt and pepper. Brown the pork well in the oil on all sides over medium heat for about five minutes. Add the onions and garlic, then stir and brown for five minutes more. Drain off all the fat. Add the milk and sage

and cover. Bring it to a boil and simmer it over low heat for about an hour and a half. Remove the lid and keep cooking it over a low heat for another hour. Meanwhile you can get the leeks ready. In a pan, brown the leeks. Stand all the leeks up in a pan keeping them close and tight together. Add the rest of the ingredients and allow the stock to come up about 他 on the leeks. Use parchment to make a lid for the leeks. Cook this over a very low heat for about 20 minutes. Once they are ready turn off the heat and keep them covered until the pork is almost ready to serve. To reheat them turn the heat back on and add a little butter and salt and pepper. To finish the pork, strain the milk gravy into a saucepan, add the cream and bring to a simmer. Place the roast in the oven and cook 10 minutes or until brown. Serve with the leeks and mash potato. Enjoy!!!

Tugann an chéad dán san a léas éachtaint dúinn ar chuid de na nithe a shantaíonn an file ina cuid dánta, cás an duine agus go háirithe iad siúd gan chosaint, gan urlabhra….an cneasú agus an cúram a dheineann an nádúir don nduine, ..nósanna an phobail… agus í féin mar dhuine a saolaíodh ar imeall na Gaeltachta, nó ar an gclaí teorainn más maith leat, agus í i dtaoibh le hUíbh Ráthach a hathar agus Gaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne ar thóir a fréamhacha. Tá filíocht Bhríd Ní Mhóráin breac le háilleacht an nádúir atá inár dtimpeall, agus bíonn an nádúir céanna gan trua gan taise nuair a oireann. Sa dán Fuar fuar í Eire deir sí:
hóige, an fhoghlaim agus ‘bileoga an cheana chun bualadh le taibhsí geanúla’ “O bhrobh go beart, bhailigh banc cuimhní Chomh luachmhar, leochaileach le cuislí a d’iompair fuil na beatha tamall” agus bionn toradh dearfach ar bhailiú agus ar shaothar mar: “go gcruthaíonn muirín carntha na mblian -rósanna Mhuire na cuimhne, labhandar an cheana Is úlla na cailliúna, gréas an fháis is athfháis” Críochnaíonn an file agus í lán de dhóchas agus don dtuiscint ná fuil aon deireadh agus go leanfaidh rotha an tsaoil ag casadh: “Níl aon cheann chúrsa ach tímpeall i bhfáinne An saothraí a thosnaíonn gach lá, as an nua, tabharfaidh sé, in am trátha, an chraobh ghlas óna gcloisfear scol an éin is binne amuigh” Is file pobail í an file agus í ag tabhairt ómóis do dhaoine a bhí go maith di. Is cuimhin liom bheith i séipéal na Carraige agus Aifreann na Marbh do Nell Ni Mhurchú a cheiliúradh nuair a léigh Bríd an dán Banríon Gan Choróin. Chuir sí punann véarsaí le chéile d’fhonn is faoiseamh a thabhairt dóibh siúd go raibh scailp uaignis orthu. Dhein sí amhlaidh do Bhab Feiritéar agus i gcás an Bhab cháisigh sí a himeacht agus an teanga mhilis a d’iompair an Bhab go huasal: “Ró-fhada taoí amuigh ag plé le caint a chodail amuigh Síofra beag mílítheach a d’éalaigh as meaisín Is í seo do theanga labhartha féin A thaithíonn iothlainn ildathach an anama” Sa dán álainn Sé troithe fén bhFód tugann sí ómós dá hathair agus an mheabhair scaipthe anois air agus é féin ag druideam le ceann cúrsa..…..tá sí ina hOisín i dTír na nÓg ag filleadh lena hathair in Aisling ar a cheantar dúchais, Uíbh Ráthach: “D’éalaíomair ar nós taibhsí trí dhoras na comhchuimhne an oiche dhuibhré sin i dtosach na bliana nuair a iarradh orm tú chur chun suaimhnis; tú ar nós garlaigh shuaite i dTigh an Dearúid in aois aon bhliain déag is ceithre fichid duit”
“Cromann rósanna feoite a gceanna Fé chaidhp bhán seaca na Nollag. Iadsan atá gan chosaint, gan fothain, Crithidís leo san anró fuar folamh” Ach nuair a dhíríonn an file a haird ar áilleacht faighimid ina slaoda í. Sa dán Sásta subhach…
….agus sa dán Carpe Diem, deir sí faoina máthair
“Féach ar mhórgacht bhantiarna na talún\ .... ar a hucht tá macnas na fiúise A mheallann lán coirceoige leannán Atá ag deol is ag rangás san aoibhneas”
“Mórthimpeall ort tá luan an chiúnais is an tsuaimhnis aigne, cé go bhfuil an geimhreadh atá dian ar sheandaoine ar láimh………… Ós a choinne sin, is tú croí na h-óige Feileacáin iad id phrόcaí meala; Tagann tú ina láthair go péacach Maisiúil fíneálta id dhathanna glé”
Ritheann abhainn na Fionnaghlaise tríd an gCom thoir, agus leis na haon bhraon di seo a sciorrann le fánaigh deineann bean bhreá di a chonaic Cú Roi is Bláthnaid . Tá an dán An Fhionnghlais ar cheann do mhórdhánta an bhailiúcháin seo agus is é seo a deir Bríd: “Nuair a bhíogann bith le teaspach na Bealtaine Osclaíonn sí a béal ag cur amach beach, feileacán, feithid is fáinleog. Trom anois, í ag iompar breac, bradán is madra uisce. Ar a port, tá crainn á clúdach -sail, sceach gheal is caorthann, sánn a gcosa is a ngéaga innti, á gcothú féin ag tarrac aisti”
Tá na haon ní go breá sa tsaol an fhaid is atá an garraíodóir ar a ramhann i dtiún le heilimintí na cruinne. Is ea, mar a deirim tá an nádúir ina cuid dánta agus sa bhfírinne sin seasann abha na Fionnghlaise mar phointe tagartha trína saol, ar nós an bhradáin a fhilleann ar fhoinse a bheatha, filleann Bríd ar an bhFionnghlais arís is arís eile, uaireanta is deacair an bheirt a scarúint ó chéile. Teacht is Imeacht is teideal don dán deireanach sa bhailiúchán nua seo: Sa leath dhorcha den mbliain gach lag trá nó taoide aife ag Bunabha na Fionnghlaise bíonn scata cadhan ag póirseáil nó go mbláthaíonn an Ghraonlainn.
Sin pléisiúr agat. Sin saothrú i séasúr atá lán do bhorradh agus do dhóchas agus do thorthúlacht, ómós chomh maith do na déithe a chuaigh romhainn, agus is mór idir san agus meon an fhile sa dán Aidbhint agus í thar n-ais i lúb na Fionnghlaise agus í ag féachaint siar ar chúrsa a saoil agus nochtann sí a croí dúinn
Fillfidh na healtaí ar Bhunabha de réir chúrsa na gréine is na reann casadh na taoide agus an domhain. Lá éigin, bead féin, leis, ag imeacht, ach an dtiocfadsa an tarna feacht?
‘Seasaim ar bhruach na Fionnghlaise, Sarah mé, nó Eilís, ag dul isteach sna blianta Ach ní hionann is an bhantracht bheannaithe Níl aon tsúil agam le breith mhíorúilteach’ Agus tá na mothúcháin fírinneacha céanna le braith sa dán Saothrú an Ghairdín…. an dán a thugann teideal don mbailiúchán is déanaí seo. Tá obair agus cúram ar leith ar an ngarraíodóir i gcaitheamh na bliana….ó thus an Earraigh nuair atá an churadóireacht ar bun go dtí go dtosnaíonn an síol ag péacadh agus ag bláthú fé ghrian an tSamhraidh….agus annsan tagann an Fómhar agus tá saothar na bliana bailithe sa ghairdín…gach a bhfuil fós go maith le coimeád, na seana-dhuilleoga atá ag lobhadh leo, na géaga a chaithfear a bhaint don gcrann….agus samhlaím an dán seo le Fómhar na bliana….. fén dtráth san tá cuid mhaith don tsaol caite…roinnt mhaith bailithe, agus tá sé in am anois gabháil chuchu agus scarúint le cuid dos na haislingí agus tugann sí ‘gan scrupall fén ollcharn’ ach músclaíonn an obair seo cuimhní ar laethanta a

Donations Wanted I know especially at this time of the year you are all probably fed up with being asked to donate to this charity or that charity and we are no exception. As you all know we are holding a Christmas Market in the Clubrooms in Castlegregory on Saturday 5th December from 4pm - 8pm (ish) and we are asking for your generosity once again. It was amazing last year and we would like to do the same this year but we can only do it with your help. All we are asking for is a donation of a non-perishable item like for example a tin of peas, beans ,soup or a packet of biscuits with a long date on them. If you have anything that you think would be nice to bring (we all have that one gift which was given to us and then put in the back of a drawer cos it wasn’t quite what we wanted)if you think someone else could use it please bring it along. We will be putting baskets together again to raffle off. Please bring any item and /or nonperishable item into the office where either myself or one of the other ladies who works there will gladly take your donation. Thank you all in advance for your generosity and we look forward to having a great Christmas Market again this year. - Bernadette( Bohan)

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Tá an geimhreadh ag lomadh ár gcrann ach b’iontach an radharc é an Gairdín Crann Clainne sa bhfómhar lena ildathanna; bhí a lán cuairteoir a bhain sásamh éistéiteach as sa bháisteach agus isteach leo ina dhiaidh sin chun radharc ar na hiontais ealaíne laistigh. Bhí Tripadvisor a thug an chéad áit ar domhan do Fhuinneoga Harry Clarke i mbliana acu mar spreagadh. Tá súil agam go bhfaca moltóirí na mBailte Slachmhara na fuinneoga agus a dimpeallacht. Tá an Gairdín Urnaí geall le bheith réidh leis lena rilleán agus lena thuras clochach na Croise. Tá na pleacanna dóibh siúd ná fuair crann sa ghairdín eile ullamh le leagadh anois. Más spéis leat a chinntiú go gcuirfear mar ba mhaith leat ceann a bhainean leat cuir ceist ag an bhFáiltiú nuair a bheidh sin ar oscailt. Beidh poiblíocht mhór á fháil ag áille leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne agus Uíbh Ráthach de thoradh scannáin a thaispeánfar, le cúnamh Dé i gConsulacht na hÉireann i Nua-Eabhrac 14 Nollaig 2015. Dhein dhá fhoireann scannánaíochta an ghrianghrafadóireacht aoibhinn agus an fhuaimeadóireacht san Earrach agus mé féin is mó a bhí sa timpeallacht agus beidh mo ghuth le clos i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla sa bhfuaim raon dhátheangach. Táim chun an rún a scaaoileadh anois—tá an taispeántas seo mar chuid lárnach de ómós atá á thabhairt dom ar son a bhfuil déanta agam i gcaitheamh mo shaoil ar son ár gcultúir dhúchais, ár n-ealaíne agus ár dteangan; caithfead dul sall don ócáid; táim ag iarraidh dul sall ar 10 Nollaig agus filleadh ar an seachtú lá déag. Go dtuga Dia sall agus anall mé go slán sábhálta. Guígí go Muire Loretto, pátrún na heitileoireachta ar mo shon. Sea, d’fhoilsigh An Sagart dhá leabhar bhreátha le déanaí; seoladh sa Mhúsaeum i mBaile an Fhirtéaraigh iad; sheol Danny Mac Síthigh AnBlascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile le Nóra Ní Shéaghdha a chaith seacht mbliana, 1927-34 ina múinteoir sa Scoil Náisiúnta sa Bhlascaod. Bhí stracadh ar an leabhar mar ná raibh ár ndóthain cóip againn. Pádraig Ó Héalaí, mac Nóra a chuir in eagar. Tá Thar Bealach Isteach (1941) go léir geall leis in eagar go nua-aimseartha anseo agus scríbhinní foilsithe eile de chuid Nóra, a bhformhór ag baint leis an mBlascaod, i gcló anseo mar ‘Aguisíní.’ Mar chlabhsúr tá ‘Bailiúchán Béaloidis’ de chuid a daltaí scoile a d’eagraigh sí sarar tharla an bailiúchán náisiúnta. Mar Léachtóir Sinsearach i Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge in Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh nó gur scor a bhí a mac a chuir an bailiúchán seo in eagar go scolárata. Tá os cionn tríocha grianghraf dubh agus bán i gcorp an leabhair agus pictiúr gleoite ealaíne ar an gclúdach. Tá sé ar fáil sna siopaí leabhar agus is maith is fiú €25 é. Bhí beagán míthuisceana orm féin leis an dara leabhar a sheol Helen Ní Shé le linn oscailt na File Bige nuair a cheapas ná beadh an oiread sin eile ag titim amach sa Mhúsaeum. Ach dhein Helen a gnó go snasta binnbhriathrach. Saothrú an Ghairdín le Bríd Ní Mhóráin an leabhar seo; leabhar breá tathagach 166 lgh 50 West Kerry Live
é. Tá sé maisithe go slachtmhar ag Saturio Alonso, i gcló ag Modern Printers, Cill Chainnigh agus foilsithe ag An Sagart. Roghnú tuisceanach as a bhfuil foilsithe roimhe seo aici is ea formhór an leabhair ach is ‘dánta nua’ faoin dteideal ‘Saothrú an Ghairdín’ an chuid is suaithinsí den iomlán. Ní rabhas ar mo shuaimhneas nuair a thosnaigh rabhadh burgléireachta ag béicigh ar maidin Dé Domhnaigh agus gan é ar mo chumas a bhéal a dhúnadh nó gur tháinig léictreachas Uí Mhurchú ag fóirithint orm. Mura mbeadh sin bheadh a thuilleadh cóipeanna díolta agam. Beidh Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill ag léamh a cuid filíochta agus is dócha sleachta as leabhar nua próis ‘Seanchatracha na Tuirce’ 27 Samhain i Sáipéal an Dísirt ar 8pm. Beidh Sladmhargadh Leabhar na Nollag ar siúl óna 5pm. roimhe sin. Tá an Cheardlann Cruthaíochta níos suimiúla ná riamh; léann Danny Mac Síthigh sliocht as leabhar nua eile fós Seanchas na Farraige. Prós leis a léann an sáirsint Noel De Búrca dúinn; Who done it? Nár réitíos-sa an chéad aiste; ar an púcaí ar Shliabh an Fhiolair an ceann is mó a chuir sin ag gáirí. Bíonn dhá sheisiún againn gach oíche Máirt, 6-7pm agus 7-8+pm. Fanann formhór na n-éigsíní don dá sheisiún; nil táille ballraíochta ach bíodh 10 gcóip de dhán nó d’aiste agat; tá áiseanna iolraíochta saor sa Díseart, agus slí fós do bhaill bhreise.
News from the Díseart The trees in the Family Tree Garden put on a wonderous display before the November gales. The Prayer Garden also played its part though one of the two apple trees was blown down, or fell down under the weight of apples and water. The birds feasted on many of the apples but visitors helped. We hope to have the official opening of this garden in the next planting season. We have plaques ready to place by the trees; these are the ones we were unable to place in the upper garden; if you are interested in one of these please contact Reception when open. I hope our Tidy Towns adjudicators will give Dingle some extra marks next time in view of Tripadvisor giving the Harry Clarke windows first place in the world this year. Many more visitors than usual enjoyed our gardens this year while on rainy days still more came to see the internal artistic wonders. Publications this autumn included ‘The Blasket through the School Window’ by Nóra Ní Shé who taught in the school 1927-34; ‘Saothrú an Ghairdín’ by Bríd Ní Mhóráin a thoughful poet. Our bilingual creative writing workshop is proving a delightful success. It continues till 29 December with two sessions every Tuesday, 6-7pm, and 7-8+pm. Danny Sheehy is reading from ‘Lore of the Sea’ in his melodious voice, while sargent Noel Burke has switched to prose; I failed to solve his first Who Done It? All laughed as he described the Summit of the Fairies on Mount Eagle recently. Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill will read for all in The Díseart Chapel 27th November at 8pm. This will be preceded by a Christmas Sale of An Sagart books, some in Énglish.

Ní hé seo a haon, ach bhí an dortadh fola an babhta seo brúidúil gránna ar dhaoine ná raibh aon bhaint fén spéir acu le aon sort cogaidh ná achrainn. Gan amhras tá cead agat súil a chaitheamh siar ar na cogaí a bhí idir tíortha na hEorpa agus na Muslamaigh. Níl anso ach mír eile. Cuimhnigh go raibh baint ag an bhFrainc leis an léirscrios a deineadh sa Liobáin, An Afganastáin, An Iaráic, agus sa tSíria. Mhairbh a mbuamaí níos mó go mór do shiabhalaigh ná mar deineadh an lá cheanna. Anois tá leithéidi ISIS sa tSiria. Tá Boko Haram i Malí, sa Nigéir agus an Algéir agus i Somalia.. Conas a mheasann na Meiriceánaigh, Sasana agus an Fhrainc, nó aon dream conas a bhraith na pobail sna tíortha a scriosach in ainm an daonlathais Mo ghraidh do cheann, ní raibh i gceist ag an Iarthar ach ampla, creachadh agus íle. Ní mór dos na tíortha seo san ‘Iarthar’ a suaimhneas a cheapadh. Téadh siad i muinín na síochána agus leig do na tíortha seo a gcuirimí féin a leigheas. Mura a bhfuil siad sásta san a dhéanamh cuireadh siad an mílte saighdiúir ar an dtalamh sna tíortha seo a chuirfidh cor na mblianta ortha mar An tSíria, Algéir, Malí, Somalia agus an Nigéir. Go pearsanta ní cheannódh aon ní an tsíocháin. Agus mar bhuile scoir ba cheart dúinne fanacht glan do mhianta Impirúla na dtíortha seo san Iarthar.Tá 50, 000 Muslamach sa tír seo againne. Claíodh gach tír lena bhfadhbanna féin, más féidir.Tá daoine istigh i nDáil Éireann agus a gcóleacaithe saibhre ag moladh go láidir ár gcrobh a chur san ainnise.Táimíd Neodrach agus caithfear gan é sin a chur i mbaol. Glactar bog ár Neodracht. Ná deintear mar a dhein Redmond dul ag tacú le Sasana ina maraíodh na mílte saighdiúir Éireannach gan pioc dá bhuíochas, ach an tír a roinnt. Deirtear gur maraíodh 20,000 Éireannach sa chogadh sin, Cogadh Domhanda a hAon, ach meastar i bhfad Éireann níos mó. Treabhaimís ár n-iomaire féin. Caithimís uainn an ghlogárnaigh gan chrích gan chéill.
