Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 26th July the feature at the Dingle Film Club will be Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. Picking up where they left off on the small screen Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more! The following week on Tuesday 2nd August the feature will be the independent Irish movie My Name Is Emily. The film is a charming, beautiful, poetic road movie about a teenage girl runs who away from a foster home with the boy who loves her. She searches for her visionary writer father who is locked up in a psychiatric institution. It is a story of redemption, a tender, coming of age drama, with a wonderful dreamlike quality

Dingle Notes

still do not clean up after their pets.

Richie Williams It was with deep sadness that the word spread around Corca Dhuibhne last weekend that the great Monsignor Padraig O Fianachta had passed to his eternal reward following a short stay in West Kerry Community Hospital. I have often heard it said that the full knowledge of a persons talents and achievements only really comes to notice after they die but that saying is certainly true in the Monsignors case. We have lost an incredibly intelligent and dedicated person but no doubt he has left us a huge reward in his many publications, collections and of course the jewel in the crown An Diseart i Sraid An Doirin. Mile Buiochas a Phadraig as na buntaisti iontach ata fagtha i do dhiaidh anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne agus scaptha timpeall an domnain comh maith.

Its great to see so many people using the TOWN PARK over the past few weeks and it proves what a wonderful facility we have right in the centre of our town. Do we have enough people interested in organising a LARK IN THE PARK before the school bells start ringing once again??? Dingle GAA are organising a CAMPA SAMHRAIDH next week JULY 25th to 29th for young people between ages 6 to 14 years in Pairc an Aghasaigh and have a few places still left so contact Sean B O Brosnachain at 0872734970 if interested. Slan Tamall

Well its the season of Festivals, Regattas,Marathons and Rasai na gCapall here in the Dingle Peninsula and full details of all events appear in various pages in this issue. As all such events cost money and volunteers time and commitment to organise we appeal to the general public to go out and support as many events as possible and show your appreciation to ensure that your local events survive and hopefully get even stronger in the years ahead. The TOP GEAR TV SHOW certainly showed the Peninsula in great light and what a wonderful tribute and recommendation the presenters gave in the final moments of the broadcast and in Chris Evans radio show as well. All good publicity and hopefully the Brexit vote will not create too many travel barriers for our tourist trade. While on the Tourist Topic I have heard a few comments about our pricing recently and especially about our restaurants in comparison to other venues around the country. We spent a week cycling along the Rhine between France and Germany in early July and found their food prices very reasonable so lets not price ourselves out of the market we so much depend on here in West Kerry!!!. We have a great product in the Peninsula but the visitors pockets and budgets are only so deep and at the end of the day the amount one has to spend dictates where one can go and how long one can stay there. TIDY TOWNS work evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. While walking around Sli na Slainte on Sunday Evening last I was very disappointed to see so much litter, weeds and cigarette ends strewn along almost every street in town. We sincerely ask every property owner to make a genuine effort over the next few days to take a look outside their premises and spend a few minutes with brush and dustpan to a least clean up their own area. Our volunteers can only do so much on a Tuesday so please please oscail na suille agus cabhraidh linn. The Dog Poo issue may have got a little better but more vigilance is needed as a certain number of canine owners

Blackberry, Lemon & Thyme Muffins Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School A good excuse to go out and pick a few blackberries! This recipe is nice and easy and the crumble topping adds an extra layer to this recipe. Muffins are a versatile bake – you can use them as breakfast or as a snack throughout the day or even as a dessert. Ingredients for the crumble 130g flour 50g sugar 1 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt 90g chilled butter, cubed 1 large egg yolk for the muffins 260g flour 1 tsp. baking powder ¾ tsp. baking soda pinch of salt 110g butter, room temperature 128g sugar 2 large eggs

Lár Ionad Oideachais Now includes

1 tsp. vanilla extract 230ml buttermilk

The Dingle Toy Shop

2 tbsp. finely grated lemon zest 300g blackberries halved 1 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped For the crumble Whisk first 5 ingredients in a medium bowl. Add butter. Using your fingertips, rub in butter. Add the egg yolk; stir to evenly distribute and form moist clumps.

We stock a large range of New LEGO, Zoobs, Sylvanian, ....

‘We have the Toy for every occasion’

For the muffins Preheat the oven to 165°C. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together, set aside. Using an electric mixer, beat butter until pale and creamy, about 2 minutes. Add sugar and continue to beat until well incorporated. Whisk the eggs and vanilla in a small bowl to blend; gradually beat this into the butter mixture. Continue beating until light and fluffy, 3–4 minutes. Combine buttermilk and lemon zest in a small bowl; gradually beat into the butter mixture. Add dry ingredients by folding them in. Add the blackberries and thyme with 2 tbsp. of flour in another small bowl and fold into the batter, gently crushing the berries slightly to release some juices. Spoon the batter into large paper muffin molds, or divide between prepared muffin pans. Top each large muffin with some of the crumble mix. Bake until tops are golden brown and a tester comes out clean when inserted into center, about 50 minutes for large muffins and 40 minutes for standard-size muffins. Leave to cool in the pan for at least 20 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Enjoy!!! 10 West Kerry Live

detail, and to arrange your own Carbon Navigation Plan

Louis Murchan

Completion Of The Carbon Navigator You will all have heard of Carbon Navigation and all it entails. All beef farmers in BDGP/Beef Genomics Programme(s) must complete a Carbon Navigation plan by 31st October 2017, while those in milk face an completion date, possibly sometime in the New Year. Carbon accounts for approximately 30% of Irish greenhouse gas-production with most of the remainder being contributed by the transport and domestic sectors, Ireland is committed to reducing GHG emissions by 20% by 2020. Agriculture emissions are in steady decline and are currently 9% lower than in 1990. The Irish grass based beef production systems are relatively carbon efficient. While agricultural emissions are difficult to reduce farmers who adapt a number of practices and technologies can significantly improve efficiency, improve profitability and lower GHG emissions. The Irish grass based beef production systems are relatively carbon efficient. The three main greenhouse gasses from agriculture are: • METHANE - From rumen fermentation and slurry storage. Methane is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It accounts for almost 2/3 of agricultural GHGs. • NITROUS OXIDE - From organic and chemical nitrogen fertiliser and excreted N. It is 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It accounts for almost 1/3 of agricultural emissions • CARBON DIOXIDE - Associated with the use of fossil fuels for energy and the manufacture of fertiliser. It accounts for a relatively small proportion of agricultural emissions With the expected increase in cow numbers and dairy output post 2015 the industry faces a challenge to reduce its Carbon footprint. While agricultural GHG emissions are difficult to reduce farmers who adopt a number of practices and technologies can significantly improve efficiency, improve profitability and lower GHG emissions. The Carbon Navigator is an online farm management package produced by Bord Bia and Teagasc that quantifies the environmental gains that can be made on an individual’s farm. Each BDGP participant must complete a Beef Carbon Navigator by 31st October 2016. The first completion of the Carbon Navigator must be undertaken in conjunction with an approved advisor. The Department will cover the cost of the approved advisor for the completion of the Carbon Navigator. The farmer’s cost is incorporated into the annual BDGP payment. The “Beef Carbon Navigator” quantifies the environmental gains that can be made on each applicant’s farm by setting targets in key areas such as grassland management. It is a very useful and simple tool which allows individual farmers to look at changes which can be made on their farm in areas such as the length of the grazing season or their average calving rate, and then illustrates what that change would mean in terms of reduced GHG emissions from his/her herd and the increased profitability associated with such a change. Specifically in 2016 each participant is required to provide details that highlight how a farm’s GHG emissions can be reduced. The areas covered are as follows: • Longer grazing season, • Younger age at first calving, • Higher calving rate, • Improved growth rates, • Nitrogen efficiency, and • Slurry management. The report compares your farm performance with other similar farms and highlights the potential impact on income and GHG emissions of reaching the targets set. Following on from the initial completion in 2016, applicants must submit data annually to allow for an update of the carbon navigator. This data will be submitted via survey forms issued by the ICBF to each applicant and will cover areas such as (1) grazing season length, (2) fertiliser use, and (3) slurry spreading. Advisors have been trained as “Carbon Navigators” and are available on the Dept of Agriculture’s related website. BDGP participants should select an advisor of their choice form the list and make an appointment to complete their navigator. The advisor will assist the farmer in the completion of the navigator in 2016 (before October 31st) and also provide farmers with an overview of the benefits associated with reaching the individual targets set out in the navigator. This Carbon Navigation is an annual process, and should be submitted on-line. Contact your advisor for more 12 West Kerry Live

Creed Welcomes Positive Decision By Us On Sheepmeat Imports The Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine Michael Creed TD today welcomed the announcement by the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) that it is proposing to change the regulations which restricted the importation of sheepmeat from the European Union due to the TSE. The proposal was announced yesterday as part of a 60-day consultation period which APHIS are now undertaking. This announcement by the US authorities that they are proposing to lift the rule prohibiting imports of EU sheepmeat is very welcome. While it is still early in the process, it does potentially provide an opportunity for Ireland to penetrate a sector of the US lamb market which can reward top quality, sustainably produced sheepmeat and add the US to the list of third country markets buying Irish product. The onus now is on the Irish sheepmeat sector to prove its credentials in areas such as traceability and secure market access as soon as the decision is formalised. This will be no easy task. This is a critical first step and that DAFM must work to complete specific veterinary technical details required by the US so that Irish sheepmeat is well placed to take advantage of this latest development. This will help to boost the existing €230m of exports to a wide range of EU and Third Country markets. Along with the current proposal for a €25m sheep scheme as well as the various other supports and market developments, the future looks very much improved for the Irish sheep sector. Results Of National Residue Plan For Milk The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today released the results of testing carried out on products such as Milk, Honey, Eggs, etc, under the National Residue Control Plan (NRCP) in 2015. The rate of non-compliance remains low at 0.2% of all samples tested, showing a continuing downward trend of low levels of non–compliance. The NRCP, which is approved by the European Commission, forms an important component of Ireland’s food safety controls and is implemented under a service contract with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). The NRCP, which is one element of the Department’s overall National Control Plan, focuses on food of animal origin. In excess of 19,000 samples were tested in 2015, taken across all 8 food producing species as well as milk, eggs and honey. Some 35 (0.2%) samples out of 19,439 tested positive which shows a continuation of the trend over a number of years of a general absence of residues in Irish food products. This is comparable with the level of 0.2% detected in 2014, 2013 and 2012. These consistently low levels reflect the responsible approach adopted by the vast majority of farmers. The extensive testing under the NRCP in 2015 indicated the absence of illegal administration of banned growth promoting hormones and other banned substances to food-producing animals in Ireland. Overall the small number of non-compliant samples related mainly to residues of authorised medicines. Creed Welcomes Flexibilities In €500 Million Commission Aid Package Important elements of a €500 million aid package for the EU Agriculture sector came to light with an additional €11.1 million earmarked for Irish farming. There will be particular emphasis on the Dairy sector. The package includes a €350 million conditional adjustment aid measure to be implemented by Member States – from which Ireland will receive €11.1m - and a €150 million EU wide measure to support voluntary reduction in milk production. The Agriculture EU Commission has taken a two-pronged approach to dealing with the issue. The fact that 70% of today’s package has been directed to adjustment aid is very welcome. Minister Creed said he was also pleased that the Commission has responded to demands from Ireland and others by the extension of public intervention for Skimmed Milk Powder and private storage aid schemes to February 2017. The package also includes provision for advance payment of key farm support payments. The payment of up to 70% of direct payments and 85% for area based RDP payments from October 16th of this year will provide further relief to farmers experiencing liquidity issues. Credit must go to Agricultural Commissioner, Phil Hogan. €500 million is a significant package in the context of competing demands for funding within the EU at this time and underlines the Commissioners capacity to deliver for the Agriculture sector within the EU. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Thursday, July 24. Rained for almost the whole day again. The kids are going berserk around the house from all of this confinement!

Friday, July 25.

By Ted Creedon

Dull and cloudy most of the day but some bright spells which let me cut the lawn - more like silage! - and just finished before the rain came down again in buckets!

Friday, July 18, 1986. Rain at first but cleared by mid-morning. President Hillery was in Ballyferriter for the launch of the Dingle Archaeological Survey book at the museum. He was entertained by a group of Siamsa dancers. Had to go to Tralee to collect family from the train. Called back to Dun an Óir Hotel later to meet some of the survey team and Steering Committee members. Home by 3.30am.

Saturday, July 19. Rain all day up to 6pm. After lunch, called to the Ceard Scoil in The Wood which is now being presented as the Dingle Heritage centre. It’s a bit too far from the town centre and parking isn’t great but things may improve with time. I was impressed with the standard of the display in the two rooms being used. A lot of work had been done to refurbish the interior. Dr. Finbar Ó Sé is responsible for chasing after material in the locality and further afield. The most important artefacts must be the Tom Crean collection of medals and documents relating to his expeditions to the South Pole with Scott and Shackleton. The late Michael Long’s collection of sea shells is also impressive. The exhibitions on the Dingle railway and the Currachs of Ireland, which I put together when I was the Development Officer of Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne, are also on show.

Sad news from England - my wife’s uncle, Mike Sheehy, passed away in his sleep last night. He was the youngest of the 14 Sheehy boys and girls. I often heard him talking about cycling to Ballybunion to dances when he was a young man. He worked as a supervisor on the building of a road on the Great Blasket about 50 years ago.

Sunday, July 27. Went to Ballydavid regatta this afternoon. It was bitterly cold on the pier from where a few brave souls watched the naomhóg races being run off. Dún Síon showed their championship form again by coming from third place on the course to take the lead over Maharees and a crew made up of Eddie Hutch and three Galway men. Ventry took the ladies race from Dingle and the Maharees. Micheál O Connor took the singles race. Greg LeMond won the Tour de France today. He is the first non-European to win the race since it was first run in 1903.

Monday, July 28. Another day of heavy rain and mist. It’s just unbelievable that we could have two summers like this. Cardinal Ó Fiach visited Dingle this afternoon and caused chaotic traffic jams on Main Street, Green Street and Strand Street.

Sunday, July 20. Wet and dull most of the day. Went back to Ferriters Cove after lunch where some 80 members of the Kerry Archaeological Society turned up to hear Professor Peter Woodman of UCC talk about his excavations of the mesolithic site. He brought us through the background, outlined the geography, geology, flora and fauna and the everyday life of people in this area thousands of years ago. The wreck of the ill-fated Titanic was found last year at a depth of some 12,500 feet. Recent reports say a safe was found but attempts to open it, by a remote controlled instrument, failed.

Monday, July 21. Ventry regatta was held yesterday and the main men’s race was won by Dún Síon with Maharees 2nd and Cuas 3rd. In the main women’s race the Ventry crew came first with Dingle 2nd and Maharees 3rd. Micheál O’Connor won the men’s single race and the Gaeltacht team beat Lispole in the tug-o-war. Reports say that over 3 million people are unemployed in the U.K. and the numbers have been consistent for the past five years.

Tuesday, July 22. Another damp and cold day. Micheál de Mordha of Raidío na Gaeltachta asked me to do an interview about Ferriters Cove but I declined. There have been several suicides and attempted suicides lately in Kerry. Is it the weather - the economy?

Wednesday, July 23. Cold, wet and miserable. Ron Wright asked me to be the race commentator at the Dingle regatta on Sunday, August 17. Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson in Westminster Abbey and a reported 300 million people watched the ceremony on television.

On Tuesday last, St. Mary’s Church in Dingle was packed to overflowing for the funeral mass of Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta who passed away the previous Friday. People from all walks of life gathered to celebrate an extraordinary man who gave his life to matters of the soul, the spirit and the mind. Ordained in 1953, Pádraig spent time as a priest in Wales before returning to Maynooth where he became Professor of early Irish. He immersed himself in academia and the scholarly & religious texts of the past while remaining thoroughly modern and progressive. He wrote, edited and published numerous works, his towering achievement in this field being his translation of the Bible into Irish. In 1993 he returned to Dingle and three years later founded An Díseart, the centre of Irish spirituality and culture in the heart of Dingle town. It perfectly reflected his passions in life in it’s embrace of learning, contemplation, history, folklore, art and all those things deeper and higher than much of what modern life offers. The gardens of the Diseart are also a reminder of the earthy and timeless nature of the man, a wonderful oasis of calm and refection .

Pádraig was a marvellously unique individual, always true to himself and his vision. He has left a considerable legacy across many disciplines in his wake. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis

The View From The Gáirdín

Goodbye Monsignor Today I was at your funeral, where many people came to honour that important moment of your life. When I left the church I felt the need to write you a letter. What first so impressed me when I came to Dingle 14 years ago, was your openness as a priest, or better as a man. I kept hearing about this very special Canon who did the blessing of the boats and was happy still to acknowledge the Celtic rituals together with the traditional Catholic ones. This was so amazing for me coming from Italy, where so many of the older rituals have been forgotten. Since then I really began to admire you and somehow wanted to meet you. And then it happened for the first time at the summer solstice when you were on top of a tractor all happy and you looked like a Tibetan monk with your smiling eyes. It was such a beautiful image. Later, there was a big fire, a drop of whiskey and the warmth of Irish people and tradition. Then a few years later when I had to find a place to do a women's theatre workshop I enquired about using a room in the Diseart. You were so open with me, asking me questions but never wanting to know too much. Somehow you trusted me, which I found so beautiful. Some months later I contacted you again because I needed a big space for my theatre art installation, The Wizard of Oz, and you were so excited. You liked the project immediately and were happy because we could use the third floor that at that time was not renovated and you knew that it needed some new life. I felt that there was an openness in you to accept and give space to art and culture because you knew that this is an important part of life, and here we were all blown in on the wind, living in Dingle, without any words of Irish. So for 4 months, I and 8 other people were coming and going from the Diseart, creating a surreal land of Oz and you really loved it. It was almost that nothing really shocked you and that actually you celebrated the chaos!

Name: Brigid O’Shea (92 yrs) Where are you from? Dún Chaoin What are your interests? Sewing, knitting, crochet, a jack of all trades! I also like watching football and comedies on T.V. Reading. Why do you like coming to Gáirdín Mhuire? It’s a great place. I’ve been coming since it started. The staff& the bus crew are great! What might surprise us about Brigid in Ascot in the 1950’s you? I worked as a nurse in London during the war. Soldiers came back from the battles abroad in bits & pieces. The wards were very busy, mostly with wounded soldiers including Canadians, Irish and British. A common affliction was soldiers losing their memories. I also worked as a professional seamstress making communion, bridesmaid & wedding ...and in more dresses and Irish dancing costumes. recent times

Come for Dinner... Dinner

I left after that to go travelling for few years and when I returned last year I came to see you, when you told me stories of all your achievements and you were so happy to be part of the movie that was shooting at that time, The Uncountable Laughter of the Sea. You were now an actor! It was very incredible to me to see your capacity to be the Monsignor but to be yourself also and to be open to what spoke in your heart. Then, when I read your book of Jesus in Dingle, I laughed so much at your sense of humour that you had in your way of seeing life. Monsignor, (although sometimes I called you Patrizio), you have been a hugely important character in this town because, with your charisma and bite for life, you could reach out to touch many people. You were able to connect to the truth that we all as human beings have the opportunity to live life as a joy and to know how important it is to honour this. Once I asked “How did you find God, Monsignor?” and you answered, “With my Grandmother who spoke only Irish and who taught me who God is, and at 7 years of age I started to give mass as a play near the trees. Yes, the trees and the sun connect me to God.”

It is those trees and that sun which connect so many people to the unknown. That's why, Monsignor, you could touch many people so deeply, because God for you was everywhere.

Football Stuck In Purgatory Tadhg Evans I don’t want to blame Mickey Harte for this seemingly never-ending predicament football finds itself welded to, because it isn’t his fault. But almost 13 years ago, he devised a game plan that was so cold, so devious, that it’s hard to look at anything he’s done since without thinking back to that day when a gifted Kerry team was paralysed in an All-Ireland semi-final. It was infamously dubbed ‘puke football’, and our sport’s been suffering ever since. What was in reality a crude ploy, one that could realistically work but once or twice, wrongly became an aspiration. Harte was always aware that ‘puke football’ wouldn’t be in-date for long, so, wisely, he ditched it immediately. It’s a terrible pity the rest of them won’t do the same. Football nuts watched Tyrone’s grisly mutilation of Kerry that day, and mistook it for genius. So they decided to imitate it. That was the day football entered purgatory, and it’s still stuck there more than a dozen years later. May God help us all. The main problem is that these managers, wannabe geniuses, are colour-blind to attacking football. How often do you hear anyone praise the brilliance of Tyrone’s 2005 and 2008 models, who engaged in a brand of football that was as pleasing to the eye as it was effective? Little more than never, because, for whatever reason, people looked on, and saw an unremitting defence, and nothing else. Nobody spotted the half-back line that could pick off game-breaking scores, a mid-section that could coolly flick between defence and attack, forwards of the calibre of Dooher, O’Neill & Canavan. All this ignorance, just because of one game in 2003. Just like Tyrone years previously, Donegal’s greatest team would also be wrongly defined by a horror show, and not their masterpieces. Their 2011 All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin might have been the worst intercounty game ever played, but it was so bad that it was, sadly, memorable. Donegal lost by eight points to six, and everyone with a brain gasped at the sight of Michael Murphy, of all people, loitering on the half back line when Donegal needed a goal to survive. But the ‘geniuses’ didn’t notice anything amiss. Thirteen months from that sad point, Donegal were, deservedly, embracing Sam on the Hogan Stand. Their defence had been as concrete as ever, but they’d earned victories with thanks to strategies that helped them rack up big scores. Yet the praise they received was faint, and their awesome counter-attacking ploys were, 20 West Kerry Live

largely, ignored. Memories of the horror of 2011 seared through their hopes of leaving a positive legacy, and, curiously, it was the losing model of 2011 that was favoured by the ‘geniuses’ looking for a style to copy, instead the winning style of 2012.

Donegal on the other hand are going backwards, and not just with their own free kicks. But at least we know they won’t reap any rewards… though they haven’t yet realised that for themselves.

Talk about putting two and two together and getting 666. So, with this, football’s stay in purgatory was extended. Jim McGuinness wrote last week in The Irish Times that defensive coaches were ruining the game, and this was wrongly described as the height of irony by the Twitterati. McGuinness was right in saying what he said, and he was not the wrong man to say it. Grand, he dreamt up the most intimidating defence in football, but it’s always been ignored that he didn’t forget what a football team’s sole aim is: to score more than the opposition. What McGuinness sculpted from that Donegal panel was frequently described as the product of a mastermind, but it wasn’t. It was a piece by a man with common sense, a work of infinitely more value than anything produced by the ‘geniuses’. His successor, Rory Gallagher, proved beyond all doubt at the Ulster Final on Sunday that he is absolutely, positively, a ‘genius’. At least when McGuinness sent Donegal out to play the most horrible football ever seen at Croke Park in 2011, he was building for a future, and an incredible one at that. But this is Gallagher’s second year in charge, and Donegal have obviously regressed under his rule. If they play Dublin in the quarter-final, and use the same game plan as they used against Tyrone, they will be split into canary-yellow smidiríní. Leaving opponents have possession from their own kick-outs, tapping a ball backwards from your free kicks, sending your longest kick passes back to your own defenders, ‘attacking’ by moving the ball… laterally… doesn’t just sound stupid, it’s been proven as such. This game plan and its tedious variants have never, and will never, win an AllIreland. They only wins games against modestly gifted teams, or outfits who adopt the exact same approach. It’s an adequate plan for damage limitation, as proven ably by Westmeath last Sunday, but woefully unsuccessful in achieving anything of consequence. Tyrone haven’t always been endearing, but we can all be happy that they won on Sunday. At least they’re a team that’s going places. They ditched Plan Stupid halfway through the Ulster final, and were duly rewarded. They’ve collected some big scores in the championship so far, and it wouldn’t be that surprising if their fourth All-Ireland title arrived in 2016.

Féile na Lughnasa Lá mór comóradh I bhí ann igconai I lá Pátrúin an Clochán. Féile Ceilteach is’ea an Féile seo. Deineadh athbheochain ar 20 bliain ó shin. Is deis mór é chun turasadóireacht a chuir chun chin sa pharóiste. Leanann an comóradh se oar aghaidh I mBreanainn, leis an lá Pátrúin ar an luain. Le rionnt blianta beaintear usáid as an ché aitiúil chun Teaispeantas Naomhóige agus Comórtas Naoimhóige a chuir ar súil. Téann na naoimhóige nó currach mar a ghlaotar ortha fadó siar go mór I stair lé Bhreanainn. Lughnasa is a Celtic festival. It is one of four festivals celebrated during the year. The other three are Samhain on 1st November, Imbolc on 1st February and Beltaine on 1st May. Lughnasa is a harvest festival which appears to go back over two thousand years to the Celtic period in Ireland. Among the most important mountain top ceremonies listed in Ireland along with Croch Patrick is the assembly on Mount Brandon. In Cloghane and Brandon Lughnasa is celebrated on the last Sunday of July known as Domhnach Crom Dubh or Crom Dubh Sunday. This festival was later adapted by the Early Christians and it became associated with the cult of St. Brendan. Pilgrimage Up Mount Brandon Central to Féile Lúghnasa is the pilgrimage to the summit of Mount Brandon. At 952m it is the second highest mountain in Ireland and one of the finest hill walks in the country. The first farmers of the region celebrated Lúghnasa with a solemn cutting on the first corn and offering to the deity by burying it at the top of Mount Brandon. All would have then participated in a meal of the new food. The sacrifice of a sacred bull may have taken place followed by a feast of its flesh, some rite with the bulls hide, a ritual dance play and struggle for supremacy with victory symbolised by the installation of the stone head of Crom Dubh on Brandon’s summit and a ceremony of triumph over it by an actor chosen to represent Crom’s adversary, Lugh. Pilgrims follow the well-trodden path from the grotto at Faha, departing at 10am on Sunday 31st July, angling upwards across the hill and passing Benagh Promontory Fort, above to the right. At the entrance to the Coom the path becomes stonier with a steep drop to the left. Near the head of the valley the river is crossed at the marked point, the path then winds between the highest lakes at the foot of the Esk, a steep section leading to the saddle. It is here on clear days gives the most fantastic views of the magnificent coastal scenery on the western side of the mountain. From the saddle pilgrims turn left at the top. The remains of an early Christian hermitage, attributed to St. Brendan, crown the summit.

Dancing the Irish Black Bottom Bert McCann 'Twas writer Scott Fitzgerald who first coined the term 'The Jazz Age' in his novel 'The Great Gatsby' as descriptive of the years 1920-1929. Ending with the advent of the great depression. it was interchangeable as an appellation with the 'Roaring Twenties' or the 'anything goes era'. Characteristically it was time of excess and hedonism but also of creativity and experimentation especially amongst black musicians. The Black Bottom was a product of the New Orleans dance scene having been published in 1919. It's thought to be an adaptation of a 1907 dance 'Jacksonville Rounder's Dance' and may go even further back. Incidentally, the term Black Bottom derived from Detroit, where a district was so-named by French settlers and referred to the dark soil they found underfoot. The dance fitted well with the spirit of the Roaring Twenties where it became popular along with the era's other keynote dance the Charleston. Ironically, the homage to Ireland that was the Irish Black Bottom, with its swing rhythms and patriotic references recorded by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five band, wouldn't have been well received in this country in the 1920s or in the next decade for that matter. In fact 1934 saw the launching of a national Anti-Jazz Campaign, a response to returning emigrants bringing their fondness for this innovative music into the land of saints and scholars. However ultimately this 'devil's music' flourished and survived. Armstrong was born in New Orleans on July 4th 1900. Or at least that was his claimed birthday. A researcher some years after his death established his true birth date as August 4th. Grandson of slaves he saw it all in his early years. Reared in the city's Storyville, famed for its legalised prostitution, he experienced family break-up, hunger and hard labour. Hanging around brothels and dance halls, at one time becoming a street singer and serving time playing cornet in a band in a home for poor black kids, he found his calling. Despite these hard times he later said that playing his trumpet transported him to the heart of the Big Easy and gave him something to live for in the midst of the struggle for survival. By the time the 1920s rolled round he'd earned his spurs playing in parades, riverboats and sitting in with older musicians and bands. Especially. he was close to bandleader King Oliver who had taught him to play trumpet and became his mentor. Oliver had moved to Chicago in 1918 as a result of a wrongful arrest after a dance hall fight and though initially the city was his touring base he eventually settled there in 1922, with Armstrong joining him in the city. There was money to be made and spent particularly on entertainment as black folk from the south were migrating and finding work in the 'Windy City' in factories and manufacturing. The young trumpeter's musical and financial horizons expanded and soon a recording career developed. At the same time as Armstrong was finding his niche, black women jazz singers and musicians were often dictating the musical pace of the Jazz Era. The exciting musical form, had in fact become an early voice of women's liberation. Women who worked in the factories during World War I were looking for new entertainment and the other boundaries especially sexual boundaries were weakening. Prohibition led to the emergence of clubs, speakeasys and venues which to a degree became melting pots for ideas and aspirations. Black women musicians particularly were getting recognition for their skills and talents. Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey were singing their way to the top, trumpeter Dolly Jones was making records and pianist and composer Lil Hardin was playing with King Oliver's band. Lil Harding was herself the granddaughter of a slave. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, as a small child she tinkered with an old harmonium that was gathering dust in the family parlour. It was the first step in what was to become a glittering career. After less than formal piano lessons with a tutor who gave her let to develop her own style as long as she hit the notes accurately, she played and sang at church, attended music school and wound up studying music at the all-black Fisk University in Nashville. Her twentieth birthday saw the family move to Chicago where she got a job playing piano in a music store. It wasn't long before she was talent-spotted and found herself playing at the Dreamland CafÊ, the première venue in Chicago at the time. Eventually the King Oliver Creole Band recruited her and she and Louis Armstrong hooked up when he arrived on the scene, and eventually married.

Not only was Hardin a composer, arranger and pianist but she recognised greatness in her new husband, a potential that wasn't being realised she felt, while he played second cornet in Oliver's set-up. Effectively she was the making of him. Lil persuaded him to get work in the New York scene, taught him to dress for the job and from there he was launched into a stellar career. Increasingly over several decades he became the face of jazz with his beaming visage and ever-present linen handkerchief used to constantly wipe his brow. Following becoming the first African-American to host a national radio show he added thirteen Grammys and nineteen hit records including in 1964 knocking the Beatles off the top of the Billboard's chart at the age of sixty-three with 'Hello Dolly'. Starring roles in upwards of a dozen Hollywood films, being elected to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame and the shaping of jazz as a universal musical language were only some of his other achievements. As was the undying gratitude of a firmament of stars including Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra whose music he helped develop. The marriage joining Lil and Louis didn't last more than half-a-dozen years, due mainly to his infidelities and they separated in 1931. However they remained close friends for the rest of their lives. She became a band-leader of renown with at one time her ex playing his cornet under her charge, a prodigious recording artist, returned to education earning doctorate and post-doctorate degrees and then had a career as fashion designer. Louis died in July 1971 following a heart attack. Six weeks later Lil also had coronary and died while playing keyboards at a tribute concert for Armstrong. Though her former husband earned an eminence that was denied her, she was undoubtedly one of the most influential forces to emerge from the Jazz Age and was indeed the proverbial great woman behind Satchmo's musical throne.

An Conair Bar, Dingle

Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson of Fish Go Deep have been playing records in their hometown of Cork for more than twenty years. Since finishing their Sir Henry's residency in 2001 the duo have travelled widely, bringing their unique sound to clubs and festivals throughout Ireland, Europe and beyond. During that time they have also hosted many of the world’s top house djs at their regular hometown Go Deep parties. This August the pair bring the party to the garden of An Conair Bar in Dingle where they will be joined by Colm Motherway for an evening of fine music and dancing under the stars. Ó cuireadh tús leis an dtogra, tá suíomh idirlín agus leathanach Facebook cruthaithe, tá mórán altanna scríte (agus ceann eile ar na bioráin), agus an-chuid pictiúirí tógtha. Táimid go léir ag foghlaim agus tá scileanna nua againn a bhaineann le húsáid bogearraí ríomhaireachta, rud nach raibh againn go dtí seo. Agus tá súil agam go bhfuil daoine ag baint sult as an dtionscnamh leis. Agus is clár é atá fós ar oscailt – beifear ag obair air go deo agus ag cur barra feabhais air. It is almost a year now since the first discussions between members of the Discovery Programme, the Ogham in 3D Project of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne took place, with a view to setting up a community project in Corca Dhuibhne to record ogham stones and other carvings made in antiquity, or even in the more recent past. Since then several information sessions have been held, workshops organised and many photographs taken. A web site has been designed (www.corcadhuibhne3d.ie – with thanks to Máirtín Mac Oiste) and a Facebook page set up. An article has been published in the Summer edition of the quarterly magazine Archaeology Ireland, and there are plans for a further article to be submitted to the Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, for publication in 2017. It is also hoped that a small exhibition will be made available, through the good offices of the Discovery Programme, which will be launched in the autumn. But more importantly, many people have been having a lot of fun discovering sites that they may not have visited before, taking plenty of photographs, learning about using specialist software, and (hopefully!) being delighted with the results. Already some new carvings have come to light, one group probably of medieval date – but on a prehistoric gallán – and another of more recent vintage – but no less interesting for that. Other stones, which had become more difficult to read due to the ravages of time, can now have their carvings more clearly made out thanks to the work of the participants on the scheme. You can view much of the work so far carried out on the web site, which is constantly being updated as new pieces are photographed and 3D models are produced. We are very grateful to the Kerry Group for funding provided to this aspect of project. This project has no time limit, not is there a limit to the numbers of people who can participate. If you want to find out more, please contact the curator of Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, either by email or phone (info@westkerrymuseum.com/Tel: 0669156333) or in person (the museum is 13km/8 miles west of Dingle, and well worth a visit!) The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. There is a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers. www.westkerrymuseum.com

In appreciation for all their tremendous work and dedication to the GAA Lotto, presentations were made to Willie Hanafin - most successful ticket seller and to Timmy Teahan and Mike Carroll for their longstanding service to both the lotto and the Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club. Senior County League: A pointed free in injury time secured Milltown Castlemaine's position in Division 1 of the the County League for 2017. MC lined out without some of their regular team who were absent due to injury or other commitments. Equally their opponents Legion were without their county players -so the playing pitch was relatively level from the start. Legion were first out of the the blocks with a pointed free from their number 7- Alan Moriarty in the 3rd minute. This was quickly followed by another point from their half forward- Billy McGuire. MC replied with a point from Cathal Moriarty in the 6 th minute. Cathal O' Connor who started in place of Alan Looney, picked up from the kick out and placed a clever ball to Jeremiah Hayes who pointed off the left boot- leaving the sides level at two points each -after seven minutes of play. Legion replied immediately with a point from Jamie O' Sullivan and MC levelled matters again when Brendan Delaney set up a move with Shane Murphy who was then fouled.Cathal Moriarty slotted it between the posts. Both sides were guilty of many errors and turnovers -with MC losing out on two certain goal opportunities in the 15th and 16th minute, despite the tremendous efforts of Dónal Kelliher and Gavin Horan. Legion were next to register a score by the way of 2 points( 1 from play and 1 from a free) from David O' Sullivan. MC's goal scorer from last week's game was unlucky to slot a point wide of the posts in the 24 th minute but the team continued to graft hard with David Roche, Mike Burke, Eoin O' Brien and Eoin O' Mahony playing some great football. Alas nothing was converted to a score. Legion had a chance of a score from a free just before half time but that went wide. The sides went in at the short whistle with Legion having a three point advantage . MC started the second half with great vigour and determination with the young Eoin O' Brien -continuing his impressive first half performance, slotting over a classy point off his left leg. Legion had a chance of a score from a free -but David O'Sullivan sent it wide. MC's free taker - Cathal Moriarty was in super form and split the posts with two pointed frees to level matters at six points all-after seven minutes of the second half. Some terrific defence by Damian Murphy, Paul Carroll and the Roche brothers kept the Legion forwards at bay. Legion introduced Mike O' Sullivan and Thomas Moriarty to boost their team but it was Cathal Moriarty who was next to score from a place kick -for a foul on David Roche. Legion'sub-Thomas Moriarty levelled matters once again with a great point from play- quickly followed by another superb point from Legion's Jamie O' Sullivan. A pointed free from Cathal Moriarty levelled matters once again for the fourth time -at eight points all. Jeramiah Hayes made way for Pa Wrenn -as MC attempted to try and secure their Division One status. Heading into the last five minutes and the teams level - excitement and tension was building, with neither side wanting to concede a score. However MC were awarded a free for a foul on Paul Carroll. Cathal Moriarty stepped up but it dropped short and a goal was on -which would

surely seal the day for MC. A point from Gavin Horan was the final outcome. Score now MC- 9 points , Legion -8 points and just 3 minutes left. A free to Legion was converted by Shaun Keane and matters were level once again in the 29 th minute. Would there be another score in either team? Would it be Legion or MC for relegation ? In injury now , MC's Shane Murphy was awarded a free for a foul by Damien O' Sullivan. Cathal Moriarty kept his nerve and made no mistake -as he pointed to give MC a one point victory. Final score: MC - 10 points, Legion-9 points. Well done to the MC panel and to Mike Hickey and his management team. Commiserations to Legion who fought right to the end. Our seniors are at home on this Friday July 22nd to Kerins O' Rahilly's at 8 pm. Under 16's:Our under 16's had a victory over An Ghaeltacht last Wednesday. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Tuairisc ón Oileán Úr Tá cloiste againn go léir faoi Shéamus ‘An Spailpín’ Ó Muircheartaigh, an cumadóir nótáilte amhrán ó Ard na Caithne a thug fad a mhaireachtana ag sluaisteáil is ag sclábhaíocht ó mhaidin go hoíche i mianaigh Iarthar Mheirice. Más ea, is dealrach go bhfuil Gaeil Chiarraí ag triall fós ar an taobh tíre úd ach gan an oiread céanna cruatain ag baint leis in aon chor! Thugas bliain go deireanach i gcathair Pocatello, Idaho. Dúthaigh sceirdiúil shléibhtiúil lonnaithe taobh le seanbhóthar iarainn a ritheann ó cheann ceann an chósta thiar. B’é an Coimisiún Fulbright faoi ndear é. Comhar oideachais is ea an Scoláireacht FLTA atá á reáchtáil acu idir na Stáit Aontaithe agus tíortha ar fuaid an domhain ina gcuirtear teagascóirí teangan i mbun cúraim in ollscoileanna coimhthíocha. Seoladh seachtar teagascóirí Gaelainne anall ó Éirinn i 2015 agus b’í an chéad uair riamh ceann bheith ar dualgas in Ollscoil Stáit Idaho, mar a rabhas ag múineadh. Tá nasc mór le feiscint cheana idir Ollscoil Stáit Idaho agus Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne. D’fhreastail scata dosna mic léinn a bhí fém bhois i rith na bliana ar chúrsaí samhraidh i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh ó chianaibh. Dheineas iad a phrapáil chuige trí ábhar a chur féna mbráid idir amhráin, litríocht is cadráil cainte. Níor mhó díbh ná go raibh paidreacha ar nós ambaiste agus th’anam ‘on diabhal ag teacht chuchu go rábach roimh dóibh aon chos a bhualadh in Iarthar Dhuibhneach! Is dheineadar togra mór poiblí ar pháis Thomáis Ághais i gcaitheamh Chogadh na Saoirse agus ar stair an Chonartha sa tréimhse chéanna. Bhí Órla Ní Shíthigh ó Bhaile Eaglaise ar aimsir ann leis mar bhuime do theaghlach Gael-Mheiriceánach is thug an-chúnamh le hócáidí cultúrtha a eagrú sa chathair. Is fánach an áit a bhfaighfeá gliomach! B’é ceann dosna nithe ba mhó a bhíos a dhéanamh iontais de sara bhfágas ná cad é an saghas daoine a bheadh ag gabháilt don nGaelainn san Oileán Úr. Tír fhairsing ilghnéitheach is ea í is tá a rian san le léamh in éagsúlacht mhionphobal na nGael féin. Ar na haicmí deifriúla a dhealaíos iontu bhí Gael-Mheiriceánaigh, daoine a thug tamall in Éirinn, ceoltóirí a bhfuil dúil sa sean-nós is sa nua-nós acu, ilteangaigh léannta meallta ag foirmeacha táite fadálacha na Mumhan, stróinséirí caidéiseacha, agus fiú págánaigh óga go raibh suim sna púcaí acu! Bíonn an-tóir ar na teagascóirí FLTA lastall desna háiteanna ina bhfuilid buailte fúthu. Chaitheas taisteal go Cathair na nAingeal, Montana, Portland agus Nua-Eabhrac chun ranganna a dhéanamh ag imeachtaí deireadh seachtaine ar siúl ages na pobail Ghaelacha éagsúla. Ba mhór an seó é bualadh le díthreabhacha Éireann agus Gaeil 34 West Kerry Live

óga na Stát Aontaithe ag cur le chéile agus seifteanna úrnua á gceapadh acu chun an dúchas a chothú ina saol fhéin. Ba mhaith an sás poirt a sheimint do chuid díbh, leis, agus is mó oíche go maidin a bhí agam ina dteannta! Deirtear liom gurb é 2015 an bhliain is mó teagascóirí Gaelainne ó Éirinn riamh ar scoláireacht Fulbright agus méid na nollscoileanna á lorg ag dul i méid. Cuireann an Coimisiún scoláireachtaí Gaeltachta ar fáil dosna mic léinn a fhreastalaíonn ar chúrsa á láimhseáil ag teagascóirí FLTA ó Éirinn. Thánadar ó Mhontana, Idaho agus Washington cheana i mbliana. Is tá ard-thuairiscí fachta agam ó mhic léinn Ollscoil Stáit Idaho tar éis a ngeábh ar an mBuailtín. - Séamus Barra Ó Súilleabháin Cá bhfuil Idaho? Is mise Spencer Armstrong agus tá staidéar á dhéanamh agam ar an nGaeilge in Ollscoil Idaho le bliain - mé ag filleadh ar dhúchas mo shinsear, muintir Mhic Chon Mara ó Chontae an Chláir. Chaitheas trí seachtaine i dtithe áitiúla i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh ar cheann de na cúrsaí Gaeilge a reáchtálann Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (i gcomhar le Ollscoil Missoula Montana & Ollscoil Chaitliceach Washington) ag deireadh mhí na Bealtaine agus tús an Mheithimh. Ní raibh tuairim agam sarar thána cad a bheadh romham toisc gurb í an chéad uair agam mo thír féin a fhágaint. Thógas ceann de chúpla rud a bhí an-difriúil in Éirinn seachas mar a bhíonn sna Stáit. Bíonn lipéid thrítheangacha le feiscint ar tháirgí bia sna Stáit - is é sin, as Béarla le fothéacs Spáinnise agus Fraincise. Bhíos ag súil leis gur mar a chéile a bheadh in Éirinn, is é sin, go mbeadh fothéacs Gaeilge i gceist ar a laghad. Bhí díomá orm nach dtugtar an stádas sin don teanga náisiúnta. Dheineas mo mhachnamh ar an scéal. Faigheann an Ghaeilge tacaíocht Stáit - teanga náisiúnta na tíre. Ní mar sin atá sna Stáit áfach. Is é an Béarla an teanga náisiúnta ach ní hí teanga dhúchais na tíre í. Deineadh éagóir ar bhundhúchasaigh Mheiriceá maidir lena gcultúr agus lena dteanga siúd, faoi mar a deineadh ar mhuintir na hÉireann. Is beag mionteanga dhúchasach sna Stáit go bhfuil aon chabhair á fáil aici ón rialtas i dtreo í a sheachadadh go dtí an chéad ghlúin eile - ar nós mar a fhaigheann an Ghaeilge. Ansan arís tá mórán teangacha dúchasacha i gceist - tá Idaho beagnach a thrí oiread níos mó ná Éire. Tá ana-chosúlacht idir tírdhreach Oirdheisceart Idaho and tírdhreach na hÉireann - ach amháin go bhfuil an aeráid ana-dhifriúil in Éirinn - aeráid an an ghaineamhlaigh atá acu thall. Tá formhór na mbailte agus na gcathracha lonnaithe ar mhachaire Abha an Snake nó sna gleannta idir na sléibhte atá ar imeall na machairí. “Foothill” is dócha a ghlaofaí ar Chnoc Bhréanainn i gceantar Pocatello - an áit go bhfuil cónaí orm féin. Tá Sliabh Scout - atá buailte ar an gcathair - timpeall le 1000

troigh níos aoirde ná Cnoc Bhréanainn. Deintear mórán cnocadóireachta i mo cheantar chomh maith le héagsúlacht imeachtaí fén aer. Bítear ag fiach agus ag iascaireacht de shíor. Fear mór fiaigh is ea mé féin. Bím sa tóir ar ainmhithe móra le hárdáin, le bogha, agus le gunnaí. Tá an fiach ina chuid anlárnach de chultúr Idaho. Is féidir le leanaí chomh hóg le 10 mbliana ceadúnas fiaigh a fháil, mar shampla. An té a bhaineann aois a dó dhéag amach, beidh cead aige as san amach ainmhithe móra a mharú - deasghnáth aistrithe saoil. Roghnaítear an Mule Deer nó an Whitetail Deer de ghnáth, mar shampla. Ón méid a chloisimse, ní mor an fiach a dheintear in Éirinn. Níl dóthain ainmhithe ar fáil chuige. Tá súil agam gur bhain sibh taitneamh as an mblaiseadh seo do Idaho chomh mór leis an sásamh a bhaineas-sa as mo thréimhse in Éirinn. - Spencer Armstrong. Lemon Balm Melissa officinalis Parts Used; Aerial parts

Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, ‘Nature’s Knowledge’, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, consultations and treatments.

Family; Lamiaceae I love the name Melissa with its soft even dreamy sound and true to its name this herb is indeed a very gentle herb suitable for most (see cautions below), even in frequent doses. Its common name Lemon Balm frequently referred to as Balm in some herbal books comes from the name Balsam due to its sweet smelling fragrance. The leaf gives a lovely sweet lemony fragrance and this flavour is reflected in the taste when you make a hot infusion of the tea making this herb a favourite even with children who may resist herbal teas. On this note I would recommend parents of young children to introduce them to herbal teas at a very early age ensuring their compliance in drinking herbal teas when they are feeling unwell. If the child is used to drinking a variety of herbal teas as part of their diet, then when illness does strike it will be so much easier to treat their symptoms with the recommended teas. Anyone however can develop a taste for herbal teas and there is something very nurturing about drinking a herbal tea as you sit back and enjoy the herb of your choice. Melissa is a perennial and can be grown relatively easily in your garden. Though it dies back in the winter if the winter is mild it will remain green and in the summer it can grow up to two feet high with white to pink flowers. It can be propagated by division and self-seeds readily. The plant looks best when it is cut back periodically, so plan to use lots of fresh leaves to brew tea, to put in your green salad and as a cooling summer drink infused and left to cool in the fridge. The plant was popular in all the old European traditional medicine systems and was used to treat the nervous system and digestive disorders particularly if of nervous origin. Today it is used in much the same way as a gentle herb for the digestive system relieving spasms, flatulence and as above tummy upsets of nervous origin, for example, anxiety and depression. It is a mild anti-depressant and can be used as a restorative herb for the nervous system similar to oats. Much of the literature on the herb’s traditional uses cite this herb as important in strengthening the brain, improving memory and chasing away melancholia and it finds the same uses today in contemporary herbalism indicated for, dizziness, poor memory, depression and absentmindedness.

Melissa’s gentle actions allow this herb to be taken frequently and long-term usage is perfectly safe. Children seem to respond particularly well to Lemon Balm tea when they are anxious, upset or experiencing tummy upset. It can also be used for feverish conditions such as influenza and childhood fevers in general. Lemon balm or Melissa whichever name you prefer is also good for neuralgic type pain, anxiety induced palpitations, migraine and insomnia. It has a tonic effect on the heart and circulatory system and will help to lower blood pressure. The herb is anti-viral and has proven clinical success in inhibiting the cold sore virus, Herpes Simplex. I recommend people to take the tea when the virus is threatening or present, drinking the tea frequently over a number of days. Melissa is an amazing healing plant. It is a very relaxing and soothing herb gentle enough for people of all ages and a good herb to use as an introduction to herbal teas in general. It can only do you good and taste wise should appeal to everyone. Preparations and Dosage: Infusion and tincture can be taken Infusion 1 to 2 teaspoons dried herb per cup up to 3 x daily. Its that Jellyfish time of year again! Louise Overy: Dingle Oceanworld If you go to any beach around Ireland during the summer months, you are undoubtedly going to encounter something that is transparent, squishy, slimy or gooey depending on your point of view. From a young age you are aware of their notoriety as something to beware of and even fear. Who are these formidable seasonal visitors and why do they make us so squeamish and reluctant to enjoy a cool dip in the summer sea? Jellyfish don’t have bones, blood, a brain or a heart as we know it. So how do they function? This is what makes jellyfish marvellous creatures! Although they look like they should be in a horror movie, if you can get past the gelatinous body and stinging tentacles you’ll find that jellyfish are fascinating. To start with, jellyfish aren’t fish they are actually plankton (small life forms that travel around with the water). They can range in size from less then an inch all the way up to over 100 feet! Where do they come from? The animal we know as a jellyfish is actually just its adult form called the medusa, named after the mythological creature that had snakes for hair. Jellyfish have a complex life cycle. Jellyfish babies are microscopic little larvae that soon attach themselves to a rock or surface and become polyps, now looking like a tiny stack of saucers. These polyps can spend several years like this. When they are an adequate size they then start to break off. The polyps go through a process called budding. It is at this stage that the polyp becomes the medusa jellyfish form. Jellyfish reproduce both asexually (alone, without a mate) and sexually (each adult jellyfish is either male or female). Generally the coloured bits of the jellyfish are the gonads (reproductive organs). The science-y bit… Jellyfish belong to a large group of animals known as Cnidarians (the ‘C’ is silent) which also include hydroids, anemones and corals. The name ‘cnidaria’ comes from the Greek word "cnidos," which means stinging nettle. Jellyfish are very simple in design, composed of the top part called the ‘bell’ which contains the mouth, stomach and reproductive organs, and from here extends the feeding arms and stinging tentacles. The stinging cells are called nematocysts and are like microscopic darts that shoot out when they come into contact with an object. What types of jellyfish are here in Ireland? While we do get some visitors from time to time like the Portuguese Man-o-War, there are over a dozen species common to Irish waters all with varying intensities of sting. Several of these species are spotted every year around the Dingle Peninsula alone. The most common species that you will recognise are the Common (Moon) Jellyfish (small with 4 purple/pink rings) and the Compass Jellyfish (larger with reddish-brown v-shaped marks and spots). The former has a very mild sting at most whereas the latter’s sting is in fact compared to that of a nettle. They don’t really seem so scary now, do they?

So why do they sting? Jellyfish don’t mean to hurt us and not all of them sting. The problem with jellyfish is they don’t really swim, but float gently with the water current using the bell to create little waves to steer with. They are interested in smaller animals to eat than us as their tentacles are the only way of catching food. We just sometimes get in the way! A jellyfish that’s not a jellyfish? Anyone unfamiliar with the biology of the venomous Portuguese Mano-War would likely mistake it for a jellyfish. Not only is it not a jellyfish, it's not even an "it," but a "they." The Portuguese Man-o-War is a siphonophore, an animal made up of a colony of organisms working together. It’s not even Portuguese! It gets its name from a 16th century warship which it resembles with its sail-like balloon. The Portuguese Man-O-War was last reported in Kerry on Wine Strand in Smerwick Harbour in 2011. They have also been reported this year around the south coast of Ireland, with a young girl just recently suffering a severe allergic reaction to the sting and having to be rushed to hospital. So although most the jellyfish here in Ireland only cause discomfort, it is very important to watch out for more severe stingers or allergic reactions. So what if you’ve been stung Contrary to belief, urinating on the sting won’t help! So that saves you or somebody else some embarrassment. Vinegar won’t help either. Don’t use freshwater as this will only release more stinging cells. The best thing for jellyfish stings is actually cold saltwater. It may not be what you want to do but going back into the sea is the best way to relieve the pain. Irish Water Safety are recommending that if you have been stung by the Portuguese man of War that has been sited in Ireland recently then hot salt water should be applied to the area. So, follow the below steps if you have been stung: 1. Ensure you don't get stung yourself when aiding others 2. Remove any attached tentacles with a gloved hand, stick, or towel (none of these available- use the tips of your fingers) 3. Do not rub the affected area (this may result in further venom release) 4. Rinse the affected area with sea-water (do not use fresh water, vinegar, alcohol or urine) 5. Apply a ‘dry cold pack’ to the area (i.e. place a cold pack or ice inside a plastic bag and then wrap this package in a t-shirt or other piece of cloth) 6. Seek medical attention if there is anything other than minor discomfort. 7. If the patient is suffering from swelling, breathing difficulties, palpitation or chest tightness then transfer to the nearest emergency department urgently. These guidelines were drawn up by the Jellyfish Action Group of Ireland and Wales (which includes experts form Beaumont Poison Centre, Pre-hospital Emergency Care experts, hospital A&E consultants, local GPs, and water safety officers) and are only to be applied in Irish and Welsh waters. If travelling abroad seek advice for that specific country. For more information on jellyfish visit www.jellyfish.ie

Annascaul Host successful Gaelic4Girls Programme

medals by club secretary Mairead Clifford.

The Gaelic4Girls programme in Annascaul has been a tremendous success, with 29 girls taking part over 8 weeks. The programme targeted girls between the ages of 8-12yrs who were not part of a Ladies Football Club and introduced them to the sport in a fun environment. The girls were taught the basic skills of Ladies Gaelic football and then demonstrated their new skills through a series of mini games. The Gaelic4Girls programme concluded on July 16th in Camp Community Sportfield with the presentation of medals to all participants. The Sportsfield was full to capacity with all the girls, coaches and parents amalgamating for the presentation. The Coach of the programme, Conor Slattery addressed the crowd and recognised the effort put in by all involved to ensure the programme was a success. He complimented the various different coaches for all their work over the past number of weeks. The girls were individually presented with their

The girls made many new friends through the programme, another important benefit of participating in Ladies Gaelic Football. The Gaelic4Girls programme provided a safe and nurturing environment for the girls to develop their athletic and social skills. Most importantly, all the girls got the opportunity to play Ladies Football, with all different abilities descending on the pitch on a weekly basis. All girls joined Annascaul Lgfa and hopefully all the girls will continue playing. Next week, the girls will head off to Croke Park on the July 25th to partake in a National Blitz . This is sure to be a fun filled day where the girls will participate in mini-games where they will showcase their newly learned skills. Also the Cul Camp are on in Annascaul Aug 1st to 5th, to register go to www.gaa.ie/kelloggsculcamps.

Killorglin Rowing Club National Rowing Championships 2016 Killorglin athletes secured two championship wins and one senior championship title for the Club over the weekend. Friday’s Racing: Our first victory came on the Friday of the championships and went to our Men’s Junior 16 Quad of Michael O’Connor, Sean Houlihan, Conor Murphy and Shane O’Connor coxed by Mara Treacy. The boys won their heat comfortably and qualified for the final. In the final they displayed magnificent rowing, the rowing stroke was controlled, long and powerful. The boys won their race with 3 second lead over Shandon A crew of Cork with further 3 seconds to Commercial Rowing Club of Dublin. Shortly after, the Women’s Junior 15 quad of Mara Treacy, Molly O’Grady, Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Anna Tyther coxed by Alanna Dolan followed the victorious track set by boys and won their final over Carlow, Muckross and Clonmel crews. Saturday’s Racing: On Saturday Monika Dukarska won her 7th National Championship Title since taking up rowing in early 2007. Monika became the Senior Single Scull Champion of Ireland in a massive time of 7:35.06 over 2000m. Monika lead the race from start to finish executing her race perfectly and opening a lead of 16 seconds over McCrohan of Tribesmen, Galway, the reigning Champion 2015. Having moved back into the single in February this year, Monika worked very hard to get back into top form and she has proven once again that her talents lie in sculling and this rowing event suits her in particular. Monika will now return to training in preparations for the World University Championships in September in Poznan, Poland. She will race the single scull for Ireland & IT Tralee. Other results (Saturday): Michael O’Connor, James McCarthy and Shane O’Connor miss out on top 2 finish in the Men’s Club Single Sculls. It was a very competitive race with 42 entrants in this rowing event. 9 heats this morning with 18 rowers through. Alanna Dolan finished 3rd in the Final 1 of the Women’s Junior 15 Single Sculls. Rhiannon O’Donoghue was 4th in the final 2 of the same event, while Anna Tyther finished 3rd in the Final 4 of the Women’s Junior 15 Single Sculls Sunday’s Racing Sean Houlihan continued his winning streak in the Men’s Junior 16 Single Sculls reaching final in a superb Semifinal performance of 7:42 over 2000m. Michael O’Connor went as far as the Semi Final, winning his heat over Clonmel, Blackrock, Castleconnel and Lee scullers. Sean contested the final in lane 3 and finished 5th overall out of 46 competitors entered. It was a superb performance by Sean. He has a huge potential going forward. Other Results (Sunday) The quad of Mara Treacy, Molly O’Grady, Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Anna Tyther coxed by Alanna Dolan contested the Women’s Junior 16 event in the fastest heat, pulling the third fastest time of all 15 competitors but missed out on top 2 finish, finishing 3rd in the race. All the girls are under 16 again next year, it was a great learning experience for them all. Well done to all our rowers, coaches, in particular Michael Fleming for all his hard work and dedication over the years, friends and supporters of the Club! 42 West Kerry Live

Do You React Or Respond To Your Children? Anne Healy In my last article I spoke about what neuroscientist Dan Siegel in his book ‘Parenting from the Inside Out’ suggests as a means of

helping you to enhance your parenting skills. I said that he recommends the following approaches to parenting: mindfulness, response flexibility, lifelong learning, mindsight, and joyful living. In the article I wrote about ways of becoming more mindful. This week I will look at response flexibility. I will discuss what this means and offer some suggestions of how to respond as opposed to react to your child. Dr Siegel explains response flexibility: as a parent you have a choice about what are the parental approaches and values you use to support your child. As an example - a little story. Just the other day a parent told me of how ‘he loses it’ with his son when he does not listen to him. Does that sound familiar? This is a story I have heard from mothers and fathers many times. This dad went on to say that this son just presses his buttons and he ends up shouting at him and sends him to go to his bedroom. This dad got upset when he told me this. He said ‘I feel so guilty after these times as he is a great child but he must listen to me’. After we spoke for a little while exploring why he reacted the way he does to his son he then said ‘well my father did the exact same thing with me as a boy, and he would not listen to what I had to say’. That was a great realisation. This does not mean that we dump everything that you do to your children on to your parents. However we are all influenced by our own childhood and how we were parented. Therefore it is crucial to be reflective about how your responses can be fuelled by your own childhood stories. Dan Siegel says that ‘when you consider your own story in a deep way you can help build a more effective and enjoyable relationship with your children’. How you make sense of your childhood experiences has a profound effect on how you parent your own children. Consider for a moment the many gifts that your parents offered you. However parents are ‘human’ and it is almost impossible to be able to ‘get it right’ all of the time. Most parents were well intentioned in the way they parented us. But for some people, parents have left them with painful memories. When this happens it can 48 West Kerry Live

get in the way of being the best parent that you want to be. If your childhood experience of been parented gets in the way of you being the best parent that you want to be get support. Speak to your doctor about a referral to a counsellor or therapist. The many parents I know who did this they say it really paid off! Understanding more about yourself in a deeper way can help you build a more effective and enjoyable relationship with your children. One way of doing this is to begin to become more aware of how you feel when your child ‘triggers’ some reaction in you where you feel you both wind up losing ground. Remember as a parent it is helpful to reflect on the fact that we do not blame the child for what triggers us. Better to say ‘I felt triggered when my daughter ignored me’. Think of times when you have entered tricky situations with your children. Knowing your triggers and being able to recognize when you are entering what I call ‘the rocky road’ are the first steps toward changing. Think about this as you read the article. Are there particular interactions with your child that frequently bring you on the ‘rocky road’? What situations act as a trigger and brings you to the edge?

times like this when our buttons are pressed to come back to ‘the here and now’. That is where remembering to be mindful comes in. We pause, we check out how we are feeling, and then we are ready to respond! There are many good parenting courses held locally. Consider attending one of these as a means of supporting you and meeting other parents who will no doubt share very similar stories of how easy it is to react as opposed to respond to your child. The good news is… we can change from our patterns of reacting to responding thus creating more positive and harmonious relationships with your child. Anne Healy is a play therapist and parent adviser with over thirty years experience of working with children and families. 087 2486421 info@mindfulparentingadvice.ie

Is it bedtime, homework, getting dressed, acting up when they are out in public, at mealtimes? Maybe all of them. I name these situations as they are ‘triggers’ for the many parents I have met over the years. Now what would it be like to consider the possibilities of changing the patterns of the past? When you find yourself about to react in a way that is not helpful for you or your child be aware that an alternative pathway is possible. Take a breath. Count to ten. Remove yourself from the situation by taking time-out. If you do ‘lose it’ and react rather that respond to your child consider how to repair what has happened between you. Locked Thoracic Facet Joint - Symptoms and Treatment Eddie O’ Grady Facet Joints and Flexibility In order to facilitate movement while also protecting against excessive motion, over-twisting etc. the spine is stabilized by a number of structures. One of these structures are the facet joints. They are found at nearly every spinal level. The vertebrae of the chest area(thoracic facet joints) are far less mobile than the cervical(neck) and lumbar(low back) vertebrae, permitting just a small amount of forward/backward movement, along with some side bending, and very little twisting. Facet joints are positioned at each level of the spine to provide and protect the limits of motion, especially to rotation, and to prevent forward slipping (spondylolisthesis) of each vertebra over the one below. Facet joints have to be able to slide on each other to allow movement. Both sliding surfaces are normally coated with a very low friction, moist cartilage. A small sack or capsule surrounds each facet joint and provides a sticky lubricant for the joint. Each sack has a rich supply of tiny nerve fibers that provide a warning when irritated. The intervertebral discs are also a type of joint in the spine, and are bound together by flexible fibers in several circling bands, like a tough fire hose, that make up the outer portion of the disc. Disc joints can bend and rotate a little bit but do not slide as do most body joints. The discs are meant to be fairly stable structures. Hence you cannot put back in a ‘’slipped disc’’ like people might tell you. Any time they are telling you they are doing this, and when they manipulate your back and you hear a crack, most likely they are just opening locked facet joints which were irritating nerves etc. and causing pain. Locked facet joints in the spine can produce excruciating pain when nerves are irritated, resulting in muscles of the area also going into spasm also. When thoracic, cervical or lumbar facet joint inflammation is at its peak, the symptoms may closely imitate those of a herniated disc. It is important that the practitioner is able to differentiate between these conditions. One major difference between a disc herniation and a locked facet joint is that with a locked facet joint the patients usually gets relief when they bend forward but have increased pain when straightening up or arch back the spinal section involved. This pain is usually also increased with twisting to one particular side(the side the locked facet joint is on). With a herniated disc the pain is usually more relentless and is often increased when the client bends forward increasing the compression of the disc against a nerve. There are other orthopaedic tests to differentiate the various conditions. However sometimes with nerve irritation and severe muscle spasm it can be hard to differentiate between conditions, because of the pain a client is in. With a locked thoracic(or cervical) facet joint pain can radiate down the arm similar to a disc herniation. With a locked lumbar facet joint it can radiate down the leg. Non-surgical treatment options for locked thoracic facet joints There are a number of nonsurgical treatment options that can be used to alleviate the pain, correct the condition and rehabilitate the back, such as: • The use of non steroidal anti - inflammatories and muscle relaxants can be of benefit. • Loosening tightened muscles of the area followed by manipulation of the locked facet joint to open it, is probably the most effective treatment, once the joint has not become too arthritic or dysfunctional. There can be a major decrease in pain after such a treatment, with the condition then settling totally within a day or two. Sometimes it works better to manipulate the joint first and thereafter do the deep tissue work, when the pain has subsided and the client begins to relax. • Icing the area with an icepack for 10 to 15 minutes at a time can be beneficial. • Successful long-term treatment involves specific exercises along with education of the client, to correct and maintain good posture.

Keel GAA Colin Clifford Obituary The parish lost one of it's great characters last week with the passing of the late Dinny Flynn. Dinny served as coach, selector, secretary and treasurer for Keel GAA Club and the respect and affection for him was evident with the large guard of honour by former and current players and officials. He was shouldered into Keel church by members of the 1981 Mid Kerry Championship winning team with which he served as selector. Dinny had a true love for the GAA and post match discussion in the parish will be much poorer for his passing. County League Keel played Gneevguilla on Sunday in round 8 of the County League Division 3. Keel started well with Martin Burke scoring two points and a point from Aaron Murphy had the home side three up after ten minutes. But they lost Shane Prendiville to injury and Gneevguilla started to dominate the game. Three points from Cornelius Buckley and one each from Fergus McAuliffe and Padraig O'Sullivan gave the visitors a 5-3 lead after twenty minutes. Keel replied with points from Aaron Murphy and James Nagle to make it level at half time 0-5 each. The sides were evenly matched for most of the second half with a Cornelius Buckley free and Conor Herlihy point matched by an Aaron Murphy free and Aaron Cahillane point. The decisive moment came as the game entered the final quarter. A long pass from David McAssey found Martin Burke on the edge of the square. He beat his man and rifled the ball past Patrick O'Riordan in the Gneevguilla goal to put Keel up 1-7 to 0-7. Gneevguilla

piled on the pressure for the remaining ten minutes but couldnt break down the resolute Keel defense. Two points in Injury time from Cornelius Buckley and Mike Murphy cut the deficit to a point but Keel held out for a good win. Time to give Tummy Bugs a Holiday! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Many a holiday is disrupted from a bout of gastroenteritis, commonly known as a tummy bug. Typically, the incidence of gastroenteritis is more common during the Winter months and early Spring, but it seems nowadays that there is some form of “tummy bug” doing the rounds no matter what month or season is upon us. So much so, that the “wintervomiting-virus” could be re-christened the “all-year-round virus”. Most gastroenteritis infections are caused by a virus - norovirus is the most common cause seen in adults and is responsible for the newly-named “all year round virus”, while rotavirus is most common in children. These viruses usually last between 24-48 hours and most of us get over them without much problems, although they can leave you weak and drained. Tummy bugs can also be caused by bacteria, such as E coli and salmonella or parasites, such as cryptosporidium or giardia. A bacterial or parasitic infection can last longer than 48 hours, in some cases up to 2 weeks. Most tummy bugs, regardless of cause, will have similar symptoms. However, knowing the cause can help with preventing the spread of infection as well as choosing the appropriate treatment and recovery for a particular bout of bug! Symptoms such as weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, raised temperature and abdominal cramps are common to all tummy bugs - but the severity of these symptoms can vary drastically and often can warrant medical attention, particularly if small children or babies are infected or those with compromised immunity such as the sick and elderly.

Activated charcoal, in the correct dosage, may be used internally to help absorb toxic substances from the digestive tract, relieve spasms and flatulence. Take a liquid multivitamin and mineral supplement to replace lost nutrients and restore energy following a tummy bug as well as a good quality probiotic supplement to replenish gut flora. Paying attention to risks can often prevent or minimize your exposure to these harmful bugs. Most importantly, wash hands and fingernails frequently, particularly when handling raw foods, after going to the toilet or being in contact with infected people. A change in eating practices and different foods associated with foreign travel can lead to a tummy bug so build your defenses by taking a high potency probiotic prior and during your holiday. It is also a good idea to take a probiotic supplement following a bout of gastroenteritis to replenish gut flora. Avoid contaminated water, if in doubt boil water or drink bottled water. Picnic food on warm days should be stored appropriately and avoid packing picnic foods that require refrigeration such as coleslaw, mayonnaise, certain meats, fish and eggs. Frozen and chilled items on your shopping list should be purchased last, to avoid them heating up in the car and brought home quickly and stored safely. Avoid cross contamination in the kitchen by storing raw and cooked ingredients separately, particularly meat and fish. This also applies to chopping surfaces and utensils.

During a bout of gastroenteritis, the most important thing you can do is to make sure you do not become dehydrated by drinking small amounts of fluids often, particularly in the first 24 hours of symptoms. The demand for fluids are greatly increased to help flush out the offenders and to restore fluids lost through vomiting, diarrhoea and sweating. Vomiting and diarrhoea are the body’s natural way of eliminating these invaders and it is best to allow this process but with careful monitoring to avoid dehydration. Signs of dehydration include weakness, lightheadedness, decreased urination, dry skin, dry mouth and lack of tears and sweat. If in doubt, seek medical advice. Limit food intake and once diarrhoea/vomiting has stopped, opt for plain, easily digested food such as dry toast, plain boiled rice, stewed apple. Yellow and orange foods such as apricots, sweet potato, carrots and squash are easily digested and rich in beta-carotene which is needed to regenerate the cells of intestinal lining. They are best stewed or boiled to aid recovery and build strength. Avoid milk and dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods or highly seasoned foods for a few days. Many foods can further irritate the stomach during and after a tummy bug and can lead to more trouble. Following an infection, battle weary tummies can be soothed by sipping chamomile tea. Another herb, Slippery Elm can also soothe inflammation and help protect and repair gut linings. Aloe vera juice is also very soothing to irritated gut linings and safe to use for babies and young children. Glutamine, 5-10g powder daily for adults, is needed to regenerate damaged gut linings and works well with slippery elm. Ginger and garlic can aid recovery so add these to broths and teas once solid food has been re-introduced. Ginger, has a long history as a digestive aid and can help ease nausea and cramps. Garlic can help eliminate intestinal parasites. 52 West Kerry Live

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Padraig Ó Fiannachta Tá an fear groí Padraig ó Fiannachta ar lár. Fear éachtach b’ea an Dochtuir ó Fiannachta, file, scriobhnoir, foilsitheoir, fear gnimh, Ollamh agus pearsa cleachtúil. Imreoir maith caide b’ea é agus ard scéalaí. Is duairc é mar scéal é an Collosus seo againne bheith ar lár. Eagarthóir, fear taighde, teangeolaí, fear diaga agus cad ná bhfuil curtha i gcrich aige sa Díseart i saol an léinn. Fear gnímh gur deacair a shain-thréithe uileghabhalach a mheas. Cion air ag scoláirí, saoithe agus an fear nár dhoirchigh doras scoile riamh. Chuir a éirim comaoin ortha uile. Tá súil agam ar sé liom lá, go maithfidh Dia dhom aon uair go rabhas cráite agus ná rabhas ródheas le daoine. Mura a bhfuil ag cur buairte ort ach an méid sin dúras ní call dhuit aon mhór eagla bheith ort. Sa chúpla líne seo caithfear a ghaisce a dhein sé an Bíobla Naofa a chur ar faill dúinn a lua. An chéad leabhar a scrig se ná An Comharsa Coimhthíoch’ cur síos ar a shaol sa Bhreatain Bheag. Bhí an Bhreathnais ar a thoil aige maraon le oscalán do theangacha eile. Sé a shaothar i bhforbairt an Diseart, na gairdíní agus an ceangal idirnáisiúnta a fhagann a Phoenix mar uacht againn. Mairfidh a chuimhne ar Neamh agus ar Talamh.

Phort Láirge an lá cheana? Bhuaidh Loch Garman ar Chorcaigh. Is fiú moladh a thabhairt do Longphort a bhain an bonn ó Mhuineacháin agus is deacir a thuiscint nár éirigh le Gaillimh buachaint ar Roscommán le linn ‘Dile’ an Domhnaigh seo tharainn. Bhí daoine ag gearán fén gcaigdheán imeartha ach cuimhnigh go raibh gála agus báisteach thréan ann ar feadh cuid mhaith don gcluiche. Beidh lá eile acu agus tá súil againn nách i an anaithe chéanna a bheidh ann. Gearáin Tá olc ceart ar dhaoine go bhfuil gaolta díbeartha lasmuigh don nGaeltacht mar ná fuil ‘slí’ dóibh in Óispidéal an Daingin. Ta tarrac ar shlí ann. Tógadh an tÓispidéal le freastal ar phobal an cheantair rud ná fuil á dhéanamh. Tá leapacha folamh. Is trua mar atá an pobal fágtha mar tá, ag saol na poilitiochta. Cheart leis féachaint chuige go mbeadh toghchán daonlathach ann do Údarás na Gaeltachta feasta. Bhí san dar liom geallta ag ceannasaí Fhianna Fáil, Míchéal Máirtín. Agus más fíor a gcloisim tá lliúntas breise á íoc le gardaí atá i mbun dualgais sa Ghaeltacht. Measaim gur timpeall 37O duine an uimhir atá luaite. Láimh anairde na Gardaí go bhfuil liúntas Gaelinne Gaeltachta á fhailt acu?. Ceisteanna. 1. Cathain a eisigh an Pápa Pól V1 a imlitir Humanae Vitae? 2. Cén chéad Chaitliceach a gnóthaigh suíochán i bPáirlimint Shasana?. 3. I gcás aoise stoic, cad é ‘urchallach’?

San idirlinn tá an Eóraip suaite ag bagairtí ISIS agus má leanaimíd-ne ag tabhairt cead do eitealláin Mheiriceá tuirlingt sa tSionainn le saighdiúirí agus seans lón cogaidh beam-na fé bhagairt chomh maith. Fanaimís glan don gcúram san. Gan dabht tá an AE ag iarraidh Éire a tharrac isteach i NATO. Cuireadh in úil cheana ná raibh san uainn. Dúirt TD gur cheart dúinn bheith i gComhfhlaitheas na ‘Breataine mar atá an Astráil, An tSaolainn Nua etc. ‘Sí tuairim na coitiantachta ná gur é ár leas fanacht san AE, ach cad fén Norbhuaigh, mar shampla, ná fuil ina mbaill don AE ach go bhfuil ceangail margaíochta déanta acu leis an AE, mar a oireann dóibh féin. Meastar go bhfuil an t-AE ag iarraidh greim iomlán a bheith acu ar na tíortha atá san AE. Ní hamlaidh atáim ag cumadh leathscéil le Sasana a chosaint. Tá an aigne i mean aicme na Sasanach, gur dána an mhaise é do aon dream a bheith ag rá leo cad a dhéanfaidís. Bhí sean- thaithí acu a rogha rud a dhéanamh trís na haoiseanna. An dtarlódh go mbeadh reifreann eile á éileamh ag Albain sa bfad thréimhse le éirí as an mBreatain mhór? Tá an Páirtí Náisiúnach in Albain tréis greim daingean a fháil ar an bpobal ansúd agus iad ag braith rompa le reifreann eile a thionscú nuair a oirfeadh an t-am. Ón dtaobh seo tíre in ionad a bheith ag iarraidh socrú gnó a dhéanamh idir na Sé Chontae agus na 26 Chontae tá sé scaoilte tharainn againn. Fág fúinn é. Measaim gur chóir dúinn a bheith san airdeall agus gan aon bheartaisí amaideacha a dhéanamh a sharódh ár neodracht ná ár bhféineachas. CLG. Déarfainn go bhfuil CLG ag tabhairt áirde ar na gearáin fén sort caide atá á imirt. Tá i bhfad Éireann pasanna láimhe ceadaithe, breis agus 450 i gcluiche an lá cheana. Is ceart an béas gan dealramh seo a chosc. Mar a dúrt níos luaithe níl, is baolach aon fhoireann iomána ann a bhaineadh tuisle as na ‘Cait’ mar a ndéanfadh na Tiobradaigh. Cad a imigh ar 56 West Kerry Live

6. Cén bia a bhí luaite le buachaill aimsire? 7. Cé chúm an t-amhrán, Bó na bPóilíní? 8. Cé a chúm an leabhar, ‘Éist le Dubh Dorcha’? 9. Cé a scríg an leabhar ‘Séadhna’? 10. Cén t-imreóir is mó a fuair scór i gcluiche Sraith Chomórtais iomána?

Conas mar a bheidh ag Albain atá go láidir ar shon an AE? Bhí breis ann ar shon AE sna Sé Chontae chomh maith. An t-aon mór ait eile a bhí ar shon fanacht sa AE ná cathair Londain.

5. Críochnaigh an ráiteas, ‘Buille luath an Luain agus buille.?

Cé ná fuil mórán ama imithe, tá titim do €100 an ceann ar bheithíg sna monarcain. An é go bfuil pinginí á ndéanamh ag na monarcain ar scáth na cainte agus an bheartais go bhfuil Sasana éirithe as an AE. Ach a gcuamair isteach sa CE bhí na hiascairí thíos go mór leis. Bhí a mhalairt i gceist i gcás na bhfeirmeórí.

4. Cé air a bronnadh Corn Sam Maguire don gcéad uair?

1. 1968. 2. Dónal Ó Conaill. 3. Beithíoch bliain go leith. 4. Ar Billy ‘Squires’ ‘Gannon Chill Dara. A bhuaidh ar an gCabhán i gCraobh Chluiche Éireann 2-6

Ainneóin na cainte go mbeadh Mí Iúil breá againn is baolach gur a mhalairt atá fachta againn. Ceathanna sneachtaigh, ceó, gaoth agus báisteach. N’fheadar cad deirim leis mar scéal agus mar Shamhradh. Ní hé is mó atá ag dó na geiribe ag scata ná conas mar bheidh againn anois go bhfuil Sasana tréis beartú éirí as an gComhphobal/Aontas Eorpach (AE)

eipic ar an bhFiannaíocht idir laoithe agus scéalta le

Pádraig Ó Fiannachta maisithe ag

Dónal Ó Bric Tá an laoch ar lár. Tá an Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta imithe uainn, fear a dhein éacht ar son na Gaeilge. Tá a ainm, mar údar nó mar eagarthóir, leis na scórtha leabhar. Tá an leabhar so ar cheann des na cinn is déanaí uaidh, ceann ar bhain sé féin an-shult as agus é ag obair air. ‘Tá raidhse Scéalta agus Laoithe Fiannaíochta againn ach níor fhígh éinne an traidisiún scríofa agus an traidisiún béil go léir le chéile ina aonad. Seo iarracht ar an traidisiún scríofa amháin a fhí ina chéile. Tá bailiúcháin cháiliúla laoithe mar Duanaire Finn, agus an téacs síoréachtach de phrós agus d’fhilíocht, Accallamh na Seanórach, ach táimid go dtí seo gan eipic; seo iarracht ar an mbearna sin a líonadh.’ - An Sagart

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service Cohabiting and social welfare payments Question I have applied for a means-tested Jobseeker’s Allowance but I was told that I’m not eligible because of my live-in partner’s earnings. We live together but we are not married and we split our expenses equally. Why is this?

the DSP adds all of your means together 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 and then halves them to get the assessable means for each one of you. For Jobseeker’s Allowance, Disability Allowance, and Farm Assist, the DSP adds all your combined means together and then assesses them against the maximum household payment for your circumstances. If your spouse or partner is getting a social welfare payment in their own right, your means are taken to be half of the

Project4:Layout 1

total means of yourself and your spouse or partner. Sometimes a certain amount of income, or income from particular sources, is not taken into account. This is called an income disregard. For example, a certain amount of income from employment can be disregarded.

Answer The Department of Social Protection (DSP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment. It assesses the total income of the household, rather than the circumstances of the individual claimant. This means that if you are married, or are living with another person in an intimate and committed relationship, the means of your spouse or partner are also taken into account. This is the case even if only one of you is actually claiming a payment. The DSP uses detailed definitions and criteria to assess whether a couple are cohabiting and you can read these online at welfare.ie.

Dingle outreach: 3rd Tuesday of every month in the old C.B.S Monastry Building , John Street

How the means of a couple are assessed differs slightly depending on the payment being applied for. For Blind Pension, State Pension (Non-Contributory) and Carer’s Allowance,
