Dingle Bay Rover Juniors Under 12’s and 14’s Reach Shield Finals Dingle Bay Rovers (u14) 2 Mastergeeha (U14) 1 AET Dingle advance to the final of the u14 shield after a tough cup tie away to Mastergeeha. Dingle took the lead through a superb goal by the impressive Colm Ó hEartain, who was set up by Dean McAulliffe. Dean was the man of the match for the second game running, himself and Tomas Ó Sé are making a formidable pairing in the central of defence. Mastergeeha were dangerous from set plays and corners and were contributing to a great cup tie. The second half resumed again much like the first with a frantic pace and not an inch given by either team, but a lapse of concentration in defence proved costly for dingle as Mastergeeha equalised. Dingle pushed hard for the winner but were unfortunate on numerous occasions to hit the wood work, so extra time it was ten minutes a side not what the boys wanted after a long season but in fairness to them they all kept going and in the first period of extra time Dylan Geaney provided that bit of magic with a perfect through ball for Aodain Devine to finish to the back of net and send Dingle into the final. Well done to Mastergeeha for contributing to a fantastic cup tie. Thanks to all parents who travelled to the game and supported the team, much appreciated and hopefully it will all be worth at the end of the season. DBR U12 3-0 Listowel Celtic D - Shield Semi-Final (23/04/2016) A big home game for the U12 team in the semi finals of the Shield, and they performed very well against a well organized Listowel Cetlic team. It was a perfect day for soccer and we were able to field a strong team with Elijah Greenan captaining the team from his goalkeeping position as usual. The first half was very even but we missed a few chances early on which put the team on edge for a bit. Paddy Ryan and man of the match Oscar Donegan both had very good first halves down our left hand side and that is were most of our chances came from. But it was Kieran Bambury, our right midfielder, who opened the scoring with a strong follow up on a rebound near the end of the first half. The team carried on with their strong forward play with a goal from Ciaran O’Cinnede early in the second half and our nerves then settled a bit. The DBR midfield was very compact and were giving very little away but we had Ronan Begley to thank for some strong tackles at the back with his usual commanding centre back performance. He had turned his ankle in the first half but carried on through the pain to put in a impressive defensive performance which also drew praise from the Listowel Celtic manager. Oscar Donegan eventually got the reward for all his hard work up and down the left wing with a 3rd goal and the match was settled. Special mention for Aaron Hughes who made his DBR debut coming on for the last 20 minutes of the 2nd half. Also to Elijah Greenan for another clean sheet and a captain’s performance marshaling his defense. Thank you to a very well supported Listowel Celtic team for a great game and good luck with the rest of the season. Oscar Donegan also gained a place on the Kerry Team of the Week with his peformance. Well done Oscar.

Feta, or a soft goats cheese Few spoons natural yogurt Method Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion slowly, allow this to cook for about four minutes at a medium heat. You want to bring the sweetness out of the onion. Add a little garlic and continue to cook for a few minutes more. Then add the pepper and chilli and continue to cook over a mediumhigh heat. Add the tomatoes, season and cook until the peppers are soft and the mixture is starting to look like a sauce. Stir in the half of the herbs. Break the eggs on top and cook over a medium heat until they are set but the yolks are still runny (about 15 minutes over a low heat). The mixture will have become thicker at this stage. Sprinkle the eggs with salt and pepper, add a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and the ground chilli or cayenne. Scatter the cheese all over it along with the remaining herbs. To serve, place in the middle of a table drizzled with the yoghurt. Enjoy!!!

GLAS Inspections GLAS inspectors are on the road and actively visiting farms at present. Anyone who have tasks to complete as part of their GLAS I application, please ensure that you have completed these tasks as soon as possible. They are supposed to be completed at this stage, and failure to have them carried out by time of inspection WILL result in penalties and fines. These inspectors will not give any leeway.. BPS Deadline. Farmers are reminded that the closing date of 15th May 2016 for the BPS is fast approaching. They are also reminded that their application must be made ON-LINE, if they are in GLAS. And Finally, they are warned that they should not leave contacting their advisor or submitting their application until the last minute. Anything can and may happen. The interest provider may crash, your advisor may crash and end up in hospital, you may have an accident. If everyone leaves it until May to complete your application, your advisor will only be able to deal with so many applications, so you may have to wait. If you leave it till the last minute, and something goes wrong, the responsibility is yours, as will be the loss, if your application is late. Nematodirus Advisory Group issue warning for preventative treatment in spring lamb. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine advises farmers in relation to the predicted risk of infection in livestock based on the advice received from the Nematodirus Advisory Group. Nematodirosis is a severe disease of lambs six to twelve weeks of age, which become infected through ingesting large numbers of infective larvae present on contaminated pasture. The life cycle of the Nematodirus battus worm is unlike that of other roundworms in that, typically it takes almost a year before the egg hatches releasing the infective larvae. There is a mass hatching of larvae in spring when the soil temperature increases after a period of cold weather and disease typically occurs in April, May and June. Infection is characterised by profuse diarrhoea, dehydration and weight loss. Mortality can be high in untreated lambs. After ingestion, Nematodirus larvae invade the intestinal mucosa and in some cases death may occur before signs of diarrhoea are observed. Ewes will appear clinically normal. This disease is best prevented by keeping the current year’s lambs off pasture that was grazed by lambs or young calves last year. The maximum Nematodirus larval count on pasture is expected by the end of the first week of April in the extreme west of the country, with peak larval counts occurring in the rest of the country by the second week (in Connaught and coastal counties in Munster and Leinster) and third week (in inland counties) of April. Lambs may show clinical signs of infection two to three weeks from these dates of peak hatching. In the extreme west of the country, lambs should be dosed with a suitable anthelmintic from mid April onwards (two weeks post peak larval counts), while lambs in the rest of the country should be dosed from late April to early May depending on farm location and individual flock factors. This will help to decrease the risk of clinical disease and reduce pasture contamination for the next year. Early lambing flocks where lambs are five to six weeks of age and already grazing are particularly vulnerable; as are enterprises with higher stocking rates where lambs are grazing pastures grazed by last year’s lambs. As environmental conditions will vary from farm to farm, it is important that veterinary advice should be sought in the event of clinical cases or for a flock control program comprising specific measures for any intensive sheep flock. It is recommended that any lambs that die from unknown causes are referred by your vet to a regional veterinary laboratory for post-mortem examination as Nematodirus battus can cause death before clinical signs are apparent. It is important to note that most of the pathogenic effects of this parasite are caused by the larval stages. As a result of this, and coupled with the fact that this nematode is a poor egg producer, you should not rely on the use of faecal egg count monitoring as a sole guide for treatment. Although all three common classes of anthelmintics can be used to treat lambs with Nematodirus infections, benzimidazoles (white drench) remain the treatment of choice and are effective against both larval and adult stages of this nematode. The use of benzimidazoles as a first choice treatment option will also help to limit the exposure of the other anthelmintic classes to nematodes such as Teladorsagia and Trichostrongylus at a point in the grazing season when treatment for these may not be particular necessary. This will help to preserve their efficacy and is especially important on farms where resistance to benzimidazoles occurs. Currently there are no drenches with effective residual activity against Nematodi12 West Kerry Live

rus which means that as the lamb continues to graze it can become re-infected with larvae again and as a result may require repeated treatments at two to three week intervals. It is important to ensure that drenches are given over the back of the tongue to avoid stimulating the oesophageal groove reflex. Disease caused by Nematodirus can resemble coccidiosis in lambs. It is also important that farmers are aware that other parasites cause diarrhoea in young lambs and require different control measures and medication. Nematodirus can be wrongly assumed to be the cause of severe diarrhoea in lambs when in fact the cause is a coccidial infection. Rotation of pasture and frequent movement of feeding troughs and watering points to drier areas will help prevent coccidiosis in young lambs as localised poaching creates moist conditions suitable for the spread of this parasite. Raising feeding troughs will also help reduce the contamination of feed with faeces. It is advisable to consult a private veterinary practitioner for an accurate diagnosis and advice on appropriate medication if lambs with severe diarrhoea and straining are observed. This is especially the case where there has been little or no response to an initial treatment. Both nematodirosis and coccidiosis can occur at the same time in the same lambs, so treatment may need to be targeted at both pathogens. Low Temperatures Limit Grass Growth on Farms Due to the recent spate of poor weather, a number of farms have witnessed grass growth levels close to zero on some days. As a result, farmers have been forced to dip into their fodder reserves. “This is the reality of what is going on. Farmers are hoping that the weather will improve shortly,” said Teagasc dairy specialist, George Ramsbottom. Varied grass regrowth levels have been recorded in parts of the country, with Teagasc’s PastureBase showing an average grass growth rate of 15kg Dry Matter per hectare per day (Kg DM/ha) on both Teagasc dairy research and commercial farms. “Typically it would be expected to see growth rates of almost double this at 25-30kg DM/ha per day in late March so that’s half of what we’d normally expect,” George explained. “The reason for such low growth rates is the low temperatures – a key driver of grass growth in early spring. Currently temperatures are averaging 7ºC on farms which is almost 2ºC lower than normal.” “At this stage we should be seeing grass covers on the first grazed paddocks of 1200kg DM/ha. In most cases we have only seen half of that, at 500-600kg DM/ha. Our advice to farmers is to keep Nitrogen spread in line with their annual fertiliser plan, and continue to supplement, while they wait for grass growth to catch up,” said George. Teagasc advises farmers to go back and look at the first fields grazed to decide if action needs to be taken. Speaking at the recent series of Teagasc Spring Grazing Farm Walks, George Ramsbottom said: ‘Walk the farm. Pay particular attention to the covers on the early grazed paddocks. Firstly, maintain a rotation length over the whole of the grazing platform of at least 20 days. Supplement with silage and meal to feed the cows adequately.” “When the recovery commences, phase out the silage feeding first and you should see an increase in grass intake by the cow and protein per cent in the milk. Then as grass covers increase, reduce the amount of meal fed. Thirdly, start to close up fields for silage. The last thing we want to do is to sacrifice body condition of the dairy cows just before the breeding season begins,” George explained. IFA Presidential election It is hopefully a refreshing result, a new leader of the IFA, who has no ties to the “old guard”. I would like to congratulate Joe Healy on his election as the new President. The IFA is an organisation which has a responsibility to its members’ through-out the country, and to all members no matter what farm size or enterprise they operate. This is especially important in these marginalised far reaches of the country, such as West Kerry. Many farmers in this area are fighting weather, soil erosion and restrictions from SAC/SPA conservation sites and need more help thantheir more prosperous and progressive counterparts in the midlands. I have had a certain respect for the IFA in the past, and hope that Mr Healy restores this respect in all of us.The agriculture industry is a key economic driver for Ireland and we all recognise its essential role in Ireland’s economy. Last year alone the value of Irish food and drink exports increased to exceed €10.8 billion for the first time. I would like to wish Joe the very best as he takes office and we continue to work together to ensure that our industry is a world class food producer and exporter. Louis Murchan: 087-2857938

Kerry County Council has published the tender notice for the construction of the N86 Lispole to Ballynasare Lower and Ballygarret to Camp Road Improvement Scheme. The scheme, approximately 4km in length on the main Tralee-Dingle road, is the first phase of the construction of the N86 Dingle to Annascaul and Gortbreagoge to Camp Road Improvement Scheme. It is expected that construction of the Lispole to Ballynasare Lower and Ballygarret to Camp scheme will commence in July 2016 and will take approximately 18 months to complete. The scheme includes a cycleway/pedestrian facility and will be consistent with the recently improved section on the N86 between Annascaul and Gortbreagoge. It is expected that, subject to availability of funding, the construction of the remainder of this scheme will be progressed in a number of phases over the coming years.

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Tuesday, May 6. Confirmation day in Dingle and we were in place in St Mary’s Church by 3.30pm. The girls to be confirmed sat on the right, near the front of the church - the boys on the left - and the parents sat behind them. Bishop Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin conducted the ceremony. He has somehow become linked to rainy days and , as expected, it lashed cats and dogs for the duration of the two-hour ceremony so that all photos had to be taken indoors. We had a big turkey dinner for the family at home later.

By Ted Creedon Monday, April 28, 1986. There is grave concern in Sweden where a radioactive cloud has been detected and appears to be coming from Russia.

Tuesday, April 29. The Russians have admitted that a nuclear power station, at a place called Chernobyl, near Kiev in the Ukraine, has gone on fire. It seems there has been a massive release of radioactive gas into the atmosphere. It’s being seen as a major disaster and while the Russians say only two people have died western scientists believe that several thousands may be dead. Wallis Simpson was laid to rest in England today beside the remains of her late husband, the abdicated King Edward V111.

Wednesday, April 30. The disaster at Chernobyl continues to dominate the news which is not good for Europe it seems. Radioactive clouds have spread anti-clockwise across the continent and food, especially fresh vegetables, may be dangerously contaminated. The Russians are being castigated by the West for not making more information available.

Thursday, May 1. The first day of summer is more like winter here with violent winds and driving rain. The latest from the weathermen is that April weather was the worst since records began in 1874.

Friday, May 9. There’s a controversy raging in South Kerry at present over plans by the Office of Public Works to close Skellig Michael to all visitors this summer while restoration works are carried out on the monastic settlement there. The OPW say that this measure is needed to avoid injury to the public from falling masonry. Some ‘well-informed’ sources believe that the island my be closed to the public for several years. Locals are totally opposed to the plans because of the loss of revenue from tourists to the area and many deputations have met with government officials recently but no joy there. Work on the island is to begin on June 4. If there was any enterprising group in the area they could mount an interpretive exhibition on the history of the Skellig on Valentia or in Portmagee.

Saturday, May 10. Another damp and miserable afternoon so I didn’t feel guilty about watching the FA Cup final between Liverpool and Everton who scored first and really dominated the first half. Liverpool recovered from a panicky start to the second half and Ian Rush equalised. They went on to notch up a 3-1 win. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish goes into the record books as the only player-manager to complete the League and Cup double. There are reports that Sherpa Tenzing died yesterday. In 1953 he and Edmund Hillary were the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

There is still no growth on the land. Reports say cattle are dying of starvation in the north west of the country. Most farmers have left their cows out by now but there is almost no grass to support them. Around here the sight of cattle eating along the grass verges of the road has become common.

OPEN 7 Days 12 - Late for Lunch and Dinner

The Chernobyl disaster is beginning to affect all of us as radiation levels in the atmosphere over Britain are increasing, especially where there has been heavy rain.

Saturday, May 3. Watched Liverpool win the League title when they beat Chelsea 1 -0 at The Bridge. Liverpool are managed by one of their own, Kenny Dalglish. They fully deserve to be champions after climbing from well down the league table. They play old rivals Everton in the FA Cup next Saturday.

Sunday, May 4. There are reports of contaminated milk, as a result of Chernobyl radiation, being found in Britain. The Irish Nuclear Board are testing milk supplies here but say there is no need to be alarmed. The EEC is proposing to ban all fresh vegetables from Iron Curtain countries indefinitely..

Monday, May 5. Milk tested here in Ireland has now been found to be contaminated by radiation and while the public is not panicking there is a great deal of anxiety about the situation. Meanwhile, the Russians have been evacuating some 50,000 people from the Chernobyl area and are asking for help, especially medical help, from some western countries. The real threat of a nuclear disaster has been brought home to the world for the first time and anti-nuclear activists such as the Greenpeace movement will gain massive support.

The Skipper

The Irish government is making a lot of noise about the nuclear plant at Sellafield, across the water in Cumbria and the potentially disastrous consequences for Ireland if the place should blow up.

CAMP NOTES Brigid O’ Connor 1916 Rising Commemoration It was a wonderfully emotive weekend of celebration in Camp, when Camp Community Council raised the National, Kerry and Camp flag on Sunday last 24th April marking the momentous history of the Rising 100 years ago. Distinguished guests, All-Ireland Football medal holders for Kerry, Sean Murphy and Tommy Doyle, joined Brigid Moran, Eoghan O’Dhuibhne, Paud Herlihy and Brigid O’Connor in the ceremonious raising of the flags. The Proclamation was read by Martin Quirke, Gene Finn, Sheila O’Donnell and Sean O’ Moráin while the young children of Camp entertained on the tin whistle and Nora Rice sang “Banna Strand.” Our parish Priest, Fr. Gerry Keane and Rev. Phyllis Jones, Church of Ireland performed the blessing of the Community Field and facilities. On Saturday a Time Capsule containing memorabilia from all organisations was placed in the Garden of Remembrance to be re-opened in 50 years time. Later that evening the circus performance in the Community Hall was again a great success. And one on the highlights of the weekend was the Historical Talk and workshop, memorabilia and artefacts exhibition at the Old School. Seamus O’Donnell, Eoghan O’Duibhne and Sean O’Moráin’s delivery of local and National History was outstanding and congratulations to them on their research and work which will be compiled in a Magazine later this year. Sheila O’Donnell, Brid Brosnan and Mary Knightly did outstanding work in preparation of events and Gene Finn, Cathaoirleach Camp Community Council deserves the highest commendation for pulling all strands together and on his Trojan work in the community field for months in preparation of this historical weekend. Thank you to all who attended and to Camp Community Council members and everybody involved in any way in the organisation of this very historic weekend for the community of Camp. Camp people at home and abroad were remembered at the event on Sunday as well as those gone before us and those yet to be born and the pride of

place in our village and our people and the achievements of community past and present was fully acknowledged and manifest in the events of Camp Rising 1916.

Ballinclare Fair And its Ballinclare Fair on May 1st. in the village of Annascaul. Always a great day out for all the family.

Súilóid Mhór na n-Óglaigh And early on Saturday morning over 45 patriotic West Kerry men and women reenacted the 1916 march from Ballyferriter to Tralee when West Kerry Volunteers made history marching to meet the “Aud” and Roger Casement in Banna Strand. History tells us that the march ended in The Rink at the Basin just outside Tralee, where they joined with others in bringing Roger Casement’s colleague, Monteith to a safe house. The beckoning light at The Railway Tavern was very welcome to the weary travellers who had only stopped once back the road in Tomásín for delicious soup and sandwiches. Our own local singer Nora Rice gave a lovely rendition of the song Banna Strand and following teas and coffees and refreshments provided by Mike O’Neill, the march set off again refreshed and very appreciative, for the final leg of the journey to Tralee. Dingle Talk: 'Mobilised and Ready: Kerry and 1916'

Historian and UCD lecturer Dr Mary McAuliffe will give a talk entitled 'Mobilised and Ready: Kerry and 1916' on Friday 29 April at 8pm in An Diseart Chapel, Green Street, Dingle. The event is being organised by Dr McAuliffe and her co-editors, Bridget McAuliffe and Owen O'Shea following the publication this week of their new book on the role played by Kerry in the Easter Rising. Local historian, Micheál Ó Moráin, a contributor to “Kerry 1916: Histories and Legacies of the Easter Rising”, will give a talk on Thomas Ashe and the role played by West Kerry during 1916 will also be discussed. Key figures from Corca Dhuibhne who led the preparations for the rebellion will also feature, including, for example, An Seabhac from Dingle, who was a key organiser for the Volunteers in Kerry. Dr McAuliffe, a native of Duagh, said: 'The role played by Kerry in the Easter Rising is key. Kerry was central to preparations for the Rising and key figures like Thomas Ashe, The O'Rahilly, Austin Stack, An Seabhac and others were central to those plans. There was a lot of activity in places like Dingle, Annascaul and Castlegregory ahead of Easter Week and hundreds of Volunteers mobilised in many parts of Kerry as the Rising got underway in Dublin.' 'In our book, we look at stories like those of Michael Moriarty, Dingle; John and Tadhg Brosnan, Castlegregory; Thomas Fitzgerald, Dingle; and Henry Vincent O’Donoghue, Annascaul, some of whom wouldn't be as well-known as Ashe or Stack but who shared a common goal - to strike a blow for Irish freedom,' said Mary.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn - 087-6720848 ergy, a system can payDowd for itself in 5 to 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com facebook/dowdyman

In the book Carl shares his memories of Dingle and its people: its butchers, bakers, carpenters and tailors; stories of bonfires, regattas, races and wren’s days; Dingle characters, rambles to the lighthouse and times he spent in that great Dingle institution - The Temperance Hall as well as pieces on Lispole and The Gaeltacht. With stories of processions, football matches, soapbox derbies and carnival queens that kindle fond memories of the Dingle of his youth. All are welcome to attend

Anam Cara Parent Evening Anam Cara is holding its monthly Parent Evening on Tuesday 10th of May from 19:30 to 21:00 in Recovery Haven 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee. Anam Cara is an organisation that supports bereaved parents in a safe, comfortable environment where they have the opportunity to connect with other bereaved parents. Parents do not identify themselves by their children’s age, how they died, or if their death was recent or many years ago. What Anam Cara provides is a safe place for bereaved parents to connect with others who understand the intensity of the grief and loss. 20 West Kerry Live

Ras Tailteann in 1956. The lunches will last just 1 hour max are open to all who wish to attend and should also be a good networking exercise which has been proved by other towns not too far from West Kerry.

Richie Williams April really kick started the crazy season here in the Peninsula and what a busy one it has been with Star Wars in Ceann Sibeal, Top Gear in Gallarus and Ceann Sle and a host of other activities catering for all age groups and plenty more to come!!!. My sincere thanks to the teams from An Gaeltacht and Dingle Clubs and the 1,000 supporters and stewards for their patience while waiting 3 hours in the cold Saturday Morning in Gallarus for the Top Gear entourage to arrive for the filming of the big match.Hope the effort will be rewarded with a few minutes coverage in the upcoming TV coverage as well as all the other locations filmed over that weekend. Already Chris Evans has given the area extensive coverage on social media and over the airwaves and so well he might as the entire group seemed totally surprised by the beauty and hospitality experienced during their trip to the Kingdom.

The Programme of events in the upcoming Féile Na Bealtaine are to say the least breathtaking and cater for all ages, tastes and interests so we urge everyone to get out and enjoy what must now rank as one of Irelands Premier Festivals. The Dingle Fitness and Running Festival was a tremendous success so well done to the organisers and lets hope it will be established as an annual event on the calendar and the funds collected will help much needed groups striving to survive in these tough times. I understand that approximately €10000 has been collected for Brú Columbanus and the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital during the Maura O’Connor Memorial fundraiser. Well done to all involved in the various events that weekend and glad to hear that Colm’s hair is starting to grow again after the headshave.

Outlook Not Good For Anyone Bar Dublin

highly unlikely to have the sophistication to block Dublin’s progress.

Tadhg Evans

The only advice I can offer is to people like me, for the sake of their own wellbeing: don’t stack your hopes too loftily for Kerry over the coming summer months. If Kerry beat Cork in a Munster final, even by a comical margin, don’t allow yourself to believe that we’ll be ready for Dublin. When James O’Donoghue fully recovers from his recent shoulder operation, don’t presume that he’ll instigate the impetus needed for a Kerry conquering of the capital.

By the August bank holiday weekend, our imaginations will be getting the upper hand on our better judgement once again. We’ve been letting that happen a lot over the past year and a half, thanks in totality to the last stings of ailing Donegal wasps three weeks before the AllIreland final of 2014. The happenings of that year were disguised as a blessing. An ‘unbeatable’ gaggle of footballers left a few openings for a swarm of old champions, who flew past the blue guard and gave the Dubs a poisoning.

I trust Fitzmaurice to make the right decisions for Kerry’s unit to improve. I don’t expect anyone to concoct a formula that can penetrate the Dubs.

It’s time to cool our expectations, temporarily. Kerry are second best – for now, that is.

The nation rejoiced; maybe Dublin weren’t as good as we, or they, thought they were. If Donegal could beat them, why not Kerry, or Mayo? Since that day, we’ve all been trying to shoo reality from our doorsteps. We pretended the tidal wave that has saturated the counties of Leinster couldn’t break the flood barriers erected along the borders of Kerry, Donegal, & Mayo, and we kept up that pretence even as drops of moisture began to seep through widening cracks in those defences. Last Sunday, at around 4.45pm, Kerry’s dam was finally declared to be ‘not fit for purpose’, even though we should have admitted it had burst last September if we had been honest with ourselves. In the weeks leading up to the National League final, comforting statements suggesting the Kingdom could be placed alongside Dublin as one of the two best teams in the country allowed for continued, misplaced faith in what was left of our hopeful dam – but you can always trust the Dubs to floor any optimism that’s been left over. Maybe the truth is that three All-Ireland titles in five years doesn’t ably illustrate how good they are, and perhaps we should try not to be misled by that fact. They’ve won eleven Leinster titles in twelve years, and four national league trophies in succession – both those stats are far more indicative of their sublimity. The media can pretend that Kerry’s strength-in-depth rivals that of an operation that can afford to drag Philly McMahon to the dugout for giving a bit of cheek, conceded a miserly average of twelve points per league game without the presence of Jack McCaffrey and Rory O’Carroll, and deploys a man who was footballer of the year as recently as 2013 for the latter stages of battles. They can pretend that Dublin wouldn’t have crushed as many of the Kingdom’s castles had it not been for Aidan O’Mahony’s dismissal. They can pretend Dublin’s superiority has only levelled Leinster’s counties, and their dominance hasn’t extended beyond that. In the days since Kerry’s most humbling defeat since being trounced by Meath in an All-Ireland semi-final in 2001, some observers have called for changes to Kerry’s current systemic approach, one that Tomás Ó Sé described as ‘good enough to beat the other 30 counties, but not good enough to beat Dublin’. Ó Sé is right in forwarding that point, but I don’t know what those changes should entail, and I don’t mind admitting that – because it’s my belief that Dublin’s panel is the best that this sport has seen in a few decades, and if nobody bar Jim McGuinness has dreamt up a system capable of razing them, then how should I be capable of doing so? I’m not sure if anyone is right now. You can state that Eamonn Fitzmaurice got things wrong tactically on Sunday, as Ó Sé and a few others have suggested, and you might be right in making that assertion. And if you think a few from the great classes of last decade need to be pushed from Kerry’s central schemes, anyone would find it hard to shut you up with a decent counterargument. But should a scissors cut a few mature names from Kerry’s team sheet, it wouldn’t trouble Dublin. And if Fitzmaurice, or a manager elsewhere, was to devise a masterplan over the summer in time for a potential bout with the champions in August or September, it would still be 30 West Kerry Live

Using Discipline Instead of Shame Anne Healy ‘Shame is different from guilt in that guilt makes a child feel bad about what they did whereas shame makes a child feel bad about who they are’ Brene Brown The Opposite of Shame: Self-Worth I want to begin with an important message that I have learned from parents that I have met over many years. One of the things they all want their children to have is a sense of self-worth. Self-worth is the opposite of shame. Self-worth helps you thrive and shine in the world. Self-worth and self-concept is the image we hold of ourselves – of our abilities, our qualities, what we do well and what we may not do so well. This is formed in our earliest years by what we hear about ourselves through those closest to us. In essence, children come to see themselves the way their parents, caregivers, teachers and wider community see them. However with the best will in the world parents and indeed teachers who are so important in the life of a child can say and do things to children that leaves them feeling very shamed and vulnerable. There is mounting evidence that some of the words used to discipline children - words that were previously thought “harmless” - have the power to crush children’s self-esteem and self-worth for years to come. In the article I will suggest some ways that you can discipline your child and at the same time maintain your child’s and your own sense of selfworth. What Does Shaming Look and Sound Like? A friend of mine recently was telling me how she remembered a shaming incident that she had experienced that she called ‘a put down’ by her mother when she was a child. She is now sixty years old and she recalled the incident that happened like it had occurred yesterday. Now as a mother herself she understands her mother’s frustration and stresses. None the less this incident and other shaming incidents impacted on her. Her story triggered a childhood memory of shame of my own. I was transported back to school. I am thirteen years old, I am a self-conscious girl who avoids drawing attention to myself. The teacher sits correcting homework at her desk. I hear my name being called ‘If Miss Comfortable (a name she conferred on me as I had a habit of sitting with my arms folded at my desk) will come to the blackboard to show us how she worked out last night’s maths question in different way than I showed her we could learn something new to-day’ I freeze and walk with head down to the blackboard. I take the chalk and go blank. Expectant eyes look at me from the teacher and the pupils, but I cannot explain how I worked out the maths question. ‘Go back to your seat and do things as I show you’ teacher says with a grin on her face. I find my way back to my seat. I felt deeply shamed and humiliated. Shaming happens when a child or young person feels bad for being told off for not getting something right, for not behaving the same way as their siblings or friends. A child feels shame when they hear comments like “You’re so bold”, “Act your age’, ‘How can you be so selfish’’ There are gender-based expectations that can cause a child to feel shame, especially for boys if they cannot stand up to schoolyard bullies they may hear “Toughen-up!”, “Don’t be a so timid!” When a child hears these comments they internalise it as ‘I do not measure up’, ‘I am not good enough’. If a child is hit by a parent the experience holds long lasting memories for them. Don’t get me wrong. Of course we need to encourage children and young people to reach their full potential. Of course children and young people need to be disciplined. But let’s work at keeping their integrity intact. It’s important to recognize that discipline is not the same as punishment or shame. Discipline is necessary. Punishment and shame is not. As you read this you may recall shaming memories you have experienced as a child or young person. You may recall some harsh words you used on your child in a bid to get them to comply or you may have been so frustrated that you just hit out and said or did something you later regretted. Indeed you may think “that happened to me and it did me not harm”. I believe all children need our respect and yes, they too need to learn to respect others. The good news is we can learn respectful and effective ways to respond to children and young people when they require discipline. As adults we can also learn to change unhelpful mes38 West Kerry Live

sages we may have about ourselves that were not the truth that we may have received as children. For example I had to work with my messages that I could face humiliation when I lectured some years ago. I was able to support myself by telling myself that I am now an adult and the fear of humiliation was no longer true. Lots of us have ‘stories’ that we have internalised about our lack of worth, or inadequacies that get in our way of doing things we may long to do. Check out www. brenebrown. com or listen to her on you tube for information on working with and healing from shame we experienced as children. How to keep shame out of disciplining children. For example, let’s say your 5-year-old hits his 2-year-old brother. Before you jump in and accuse him or her with, “What did you just do to your brother?” He is only a child’ I am sick and tired of you messing about, grow up’ try instead to say: Parent: What happened? Child: I did nothing, he is always crying he wanted my Nintendo Parent: And? Child: And he took my toy! Parent: And? Child: And I am sick of him, you always stand up for him. Parent: Sounds like you were angry. Child: Yes! Parent: And you hit him? Child: I only took my toy! I gave him a small push and he screamed. So eventually you can get to the “you,” after trying to understand the child’s perspective, but try to not get into an accusation straight away. Keep your connection strong with your child by focusing on what happened and just getting the facts first. Then try saying to your child, ‘When your brother takes your toy I need you to not hit him, it is annoying at times I know when he wants yours toys. Instead give him something else to play with to distract him. I know you do not need to hurt him’ Example 2 If your child makes a mistake, breaks something tell them you’re there to help them fix it. What children need in the face of their mistakes is support. If they’re old enough to fix their own mistakes, you can support and encourage them to do just that. If they’re very young, you can step in and let them know you’re right there with them. Try saying to them: ‘Let’s see how can we fix it’? ‘Let’s clean this up’. The purpose of the “we” tells the child that you are on her or his side. You communicate that your child is not a bad person for a mistake she or he made, they are not bad because they broke rules. Yes they need to learn and if they broke something in anger they may have to pay for the item they broke. Conclusion Every parent’s capacity for patience can be stretched, that’s human. As a culture it is underestimated the skill and energy that is needed to truly meet children’s needs. If you read this and think there may be times when you are in danger of shaming your child, stop and take that ‘sacred breath’ that I have mentioned in other articles. Just breathe in and out a few times, acknowledge that you may feel really stretched, annoyed or whatever feeling you may have. As a means of support ask for practical help from trusted friends and family. Children’s self-worth determines their behaviour. Children will act out how they feel inside. A child who believes herself or himself to be bad will, act out often causing the parent to pile on more shame in an effort to control it. It is worth remembering to reflect on the question ‘what way do I want my child or my young person to feel when I discipline them. Do I want to enhance their self-worth and in so doing avoid shaming them’. And my experience tells me that that parents want to enhance their child’s sense of self-worth. Tension headaches Eddie O’ Grady aches affect most people at some point in their lives. Although they are a rare occurrence for most people, a small percentage suffer regularly from tension headaches. These headaches usually develop in the afternoon, causing mild to moderate pain. The pain may envelop your entire head or be limited to the forehead, back or top of the head. Many people describe a sensation of dull tightness or pressure that occurs in a bandlike pattern. The intensity of the pain may fluctuate, but usually it isn’t intense enough to keep you from functioning or sleeping. Unlike migraine headaches, tension headaches are not accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or blurred vision. In addition, researchers haven’t linked them to common migraine triggers, such as foods, genes, or hormonal changes. They are common at any age, but women are more susceptible, as is true for headaches in general. Often tension headaches are caused by tightness in the muscles of the scalp and the neck most notably levator scapulae, suboccipitals and scalenes. A variety of emotional and physical factors can also trigger this muscle tightness. Physical problems, such as eyestrain, whiplash, poor posture, or tiredness can also act as triggers.

Subjecting your head and neck muscles to any prolonged strain can cause them to stiffen, leading to tension headaches. Maintaining good head posture and avoiding awkward neck positions can help avoid this. If the muscles tighten often proper deep tissue work can significantly reduce or even totally eliminate tension headaches provided posture and any other triggering stresses are reduced. Often the effected muscles of the neck and shoulders have what are called trigger points which refer pain to different areas of the head. A good therapist will be able to deactivate these trigger points eliminating the referred pain. Neck manipulations without a significant amount of time spent on tissue work will have little long term benefit . Proper deep tissue work is so important here and with a good therapist you should see improvement from treatment to treatment.

The diagram shows the referral patterns from trigger points of three major neck and shoulder muscles (suboccipitals , sternocleidomastoid and trapezius).

Subocciptal muscles(x marks trigger point positions within the muscles)with pain referral pattern in red.

Killorglin Rowing Club Well done to all rowers on a wonderful weekend of racing! After three wins in Limerick Regatta on Saturday, two in the Women’s Junior 15 Double Sculls (Anna Tyther & Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Alanna Dolan & Hannah Joy) and the Women’s Junior 15 Quad of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Tyther, Hannah Joy and Alanna Dolan, there was no time to rest! On Sunday, our rowers raced for their respective schools at the National Schools Regatta, racing hard to the line in heats, time trials and finals to secure best possible place for their school (the title of the ‘Best Rowing School’ is awarded based on a scoring system, with points awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place). Intermediate School Killorglin came out on top with two wins. First, in the Women’s Junior 15 Double Scull of Anna Tyther and Rhiannon O’Donoghue and the Women’s Junior 15 Quad of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Tyther, Molly O’Grady and Alanna Dolan. Michael O’Connor made the final of the Men’s Junior 16 Single Scull for the Killorglin Community College. Michael finished 4th out of the 16 entrants in the race. Alanna Dolan, who is still under 14 raced her first race in the Under 14 Single Sculls event finishing 2nd in her final. Well done Alanna, great achievement. Alanna also paired up with Grace O’Grady in the Women’s Junior 14 double and finished 3rd in their final. Sean Houlihan and Shane O’Connor raced the Men’s Junior 16 Double Scull for the ISK and missed out narrowly on first place to Christian Brothers College of Cork. They also raced the Men’s Junior 16 Singles, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively with only the winner progressing to the final. Cathal O’Donovan and Stephen O’Sullivan raced for Colaiste Na Sceilge, Cahersiveen in the Men’s Under23 Double and finished 2nd in the time trial. James McCarthy raced for the Presenta-

tion School, Milltown and finished 3rd in the second time trial. Both crews missed out on qualification to the final. Again, well done to all athletes and big thanks to all supporters, parents and Mike Fleming for all his hard work and effort put into coaching.

Is there Trouble brewing in your Cuppa? Irene Ní Fhlannúra There are various accounts of the origins of coffee, but the most popular is the discovery made by a goat herder named Kaldi in Ethiopia during the 9th century. He noticed his goats dancing from one coffee shrub to another after consuming the red berries, in which the coffee bean is contained. Curiosity took over and Kaldi decided to try out these bitter berries for himself and soon he was as giddy as the goats. A passing monk on witnessing the antics of Kaldi and the goats, decided to pick some for himself and his brothers and sure enough, they were up all night praying and filled with divine inspiration. From these humble beginnings, coffee is now one of most widely consumed drink in the world and is only second to oil as the most traded commodity in the world. Many recent studies show that drinking one to two cups of coffee per day can protect against cancer, particularly liver and colon cancer. It also offers protection against conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. These health benefits can be mostly attributed to caffeine which temporarily increase the output of our stress hormones - which, in small amounts, produce positive effects all over the body. Caffeine is a stimulant in coffee which can increase our energy levels and metabolism, improve concentration and alertness and increase the rate at which we burn fat (mostly to fuel the extra energy burst). Antioxidants and tannins in coffee also have protective qualities - protecting us from free radical damage which is good for our heart and vascular system. On closer examination of these studies it is noticeable that many of the benefits of drinking coffee are linked to protective qualities rather than the therapeutic use of coffee to treat a specific ailment. In fact, coffee can make many existing conditions worse and impair healing. For example, coffee induces contractions in the gallbladder - thereby increasing the flow of bile and aiding the function of the gallbladder - this is good as it protects from gallbladder disease. But, when gallstones already exist - these extra contractions can worsen the condition and increase pain, inflammation and the risk of obstruction in the gallbladder - not good! The same is true for Type-2 diabetes, much of the studies examine populations of coffee drinkers compared with non-coffee drinkers. Coffee drinkers are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, probably due to high levels of magnesium and chromium in coffee which assist insulin to work more effectively as well as the protective antioxidants in coffee. However, once type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, most of the protective qualities of coffee are negated as the body struggles to benefit from this drink. Also, many of the other habits linked to drinking coffee, such as adding sugar, smoking and eating sweet foods far outweigh any benefits that coffee may offer. It is important, therefore, to look at these studies a little closer before you order a super-sized cup of latté, hoping to find a cure for diabetes at the end of your mug! The battle between caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee rages on across the globe leaving many of us believing that it’s better to drink decaff instead. However, the protection that coffee offers against Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia is due to caffeine which positively affects neurotransmitters associated with alertness, concentration and enhanced memory. Again there is the downside - too much coffee over stimulates these same neurotransmitters leaving us agitated, anxious and jaded. Caffeine affects our sleep patterns, particularly if consumed late in the day – adding extra woes that are associated with lousy sleep. Decaff, at first glance, might seem like a good alternative but the processing and chemicals involved in removing the caffeine can be harmful in many other ways. Caffeine is removed from the bean by soaking it in a solvent such as carbon dioxide or methylene, which are linked to cancer. In the 1970s, another solvent 42 West Kerry Live

trichloroethylene was used but later discontinued due to its carcinogenic properties. If choosing decaff, look for natural methods for decaffeination such as “Swiss water process” which uses activated charcoal or carbon filters to remove the caffeine. As with all good things in life – moderation is key. Most research shows that the health benefits come with one or two cups of coffee a day, whereas more than five will certainly negatively impact on your health. If you have a pre-existing health condition or on medication find out how caffeine may impact on your illness and your meds. Thankfully, for most of us - we can enjoy a cup or two of this glorious brew knowing its great taste and aroma will impart some goodness and raise our spirits, just like Kaldi, the goats and the monks! Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs

Deirdre Daly Peppermint Mentha piperata Parts Used; Aerial parts Family; Lamiaceae There are many different varieties of mint but it is the peppermint Mentha piperata that is most valued medicinally. Peppermint is considered to be a hybrid of watermint and spearmint but has a stronger proportion of aromatic oils than the other mints. All species of mint have the same properties and can be used safely apart from the specie pennyroyal M. pulegium, which is contraindicated in pregnancy. Mentha Piperata is highly aromatic and is used in cosmetics, confectionary, liqueurs and drinks as well as therapeutically. It is a good plant to have in your garden and a few sprigs of the plant can be picked for a pleasant minty hot or cold tea infusion. The plant can be invasive so be careful where you chose to plant it. Most people have some experience with this plant and it is a popular herb taken mostly as a tea infusion particularly for the digestion or just for its pleasurable taste. If you like mint (and I do know a few people who don’t) it will mask the taste of other less palatable or tasteless herbs. Peppermint can be quite stimulating and in some people will cause insomnia so avoid drinking in the evening. It is however a good herb for concentration and taken together with sage can help struggling students during exam time. Again beware drinking late at night as a good night’s sleep is by far superior to any stimulant. Therapeutically peppermint has many uses and it is excellent for the digestive system resolving problems such as, indigestion, flatulence, IBS, nausea and cramps. Peppermint helps the muscles of the digestive system to relax and in my experience, nausea and cramps can be cured or at least alleviated almost instantly with, for example, a tincture blend

44 West Kerry Live

of chamomile and peppermint. The highly aromatic oils in peppermint act as a mild anaesthetic allaying nausea and easing cramps. Sipping an infusion of peppermint tea throughout the day adding chamomile if liked, is a comforting remedy when you are feeling nauseous. Peppermint is also good for coughs and colds and a tea infusion of peppermint on its own or a blend of elderflower, peppermint and yarrow can help to keep a nasty cold or flu at bay. A steam inhalation of peppermint essential oil will give temporary relief in nasal catarrh and help clear sinus problems and a blocked nose . In much the same way as nausea and cramps can be relieved, so too can painful periods as can headaches caused by tension or an upset tummy. A footbath of peppermint can work wonders for tired feet soaking them in a hot peppermint foot bath for tired achy feet or a cold infusion for hot or sweaty feet. The essential oil of peppermint can also be used to soothe itching and inflammation of the skin and for local pain relief where arthritis and rheumatism are a problem Peppermint is a versatile herb and another must have for the kitchen cupboard, settling the digestive system, alleviating colds and flu like symptoms, easing menstrual cramps and a comforting drink when you are feeling nauseous or headachy from a tummy upset. Externally the essential oil can be used as an inhalant for nasal catarrh and applied locally for sciatica and rheumatic type pains diluting in, for example, almond or olive oil. Preparation; Peppermint tea infusions hot or cold, therapeutically 2 tsps to each cup three times a day Tincture 1-3ml three times a day Externally essential oil diluted in a carrier oil Safety considerations: Not to be taken if breast feeding Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, Nature’s Knowledge, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Ó thaobh Seán ‘Binn’ ó Ceallacháin ba iníon a chéile don laoch Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh ó Ghallarus. Agus thug a bhfurmhór seo aghaidh ar Thrá Lí le onóir agus buíochas a gabháil lenár n-Óglaigh. Níórbh aon nath acu an siúl. Bhí an aimsir fé dhóibh rud na raibh do dhream 1916. Ambaist beagnach daichead míle. Is maith í an óige. Nach deas an taispeáinteas a bhí ag CLG i bPáirc an Chrócaigh Dé Domhnaigh. Bhí sé thar barr. Ná bac an babhta seo le foireann Chiarraí. Bhuail mí-ádh iad.

Drámaí Ní fuaireas ach caoi oíche amháin a chaitheamh ag féachaint ar na drámaí a bhí ann i rith na Féile ar an bhFeothanaigh. Bhí an trí dhráma aon ghníomh a chonac do diail. Scor Tá Gearóid ó Brosnacháin ag éirí as a phost mar bhainisteoir an Chomharchumainn, tréis taoide mhór blianta. Is beag ná déarfadh gur dhein Gearóid a chúram go paiteanta, críochnúil. Seolann an bád go láidir dá éis. Bás Bhí an- aithne agam ar Mháirín Breathnach ó Bhaile a’ Lochaigh agus Leataoibh Mór, a fuair bás le déanaí i Sasana. Bhí an naocha bliain cnagaithe aici. Bhí an- bhailiú scéalta neamh-ghnáthacha aice, dánta agus paidreacha. Chuir sí go leor ar phár dhom agus bhí an scríobhnóireacht chómh ealaíonta go mbeadh brí an abhair imithe amú ort bhí an pheannaireacht chomh taibhseach san. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam galánta. Ráiteas Ráiteas ó Chraobh Chorca Dhuibhne do Chonradh na Gaeilge. ‘Is abhar mórtais dúinn go léir a fheabhas is atá Éirí Amach Na Cásca á chomóradh ar fuaid na tíre agus anseo sa Ghaeltacht. Ach is abhar díomá é go mbeadh sé do dhaoirseacht in ár n- údaráis go mbeadh ainmneacha Saighdiúirí Shasana a maraíodh le linn Éirí Amach na Cásca ar an leacht chéanna, i Reilig Ghlas Naíon ar a bhfuil ainmneacha laochra Gael a maraíodh. Tá an dearmad a bhí sa Ghaolainn i dtosach ceartaithe go ciotach. An mbeadh na Sasanaigh sásta ainmneacha saighdiúirí Gearmánacha a bheith ar an leacht cheana agus a gcuid saighdiúirí féin a maraíodh sa chéad agus an dara cogadh Domhanda? Dar linn gur masla é seo dos na laochra seo againne a fuair bás le linn an Éirí Amach. Agus mo náire iad siúd a bhí freagarach as an obair dhaoirsiúil mí-chuibhseach seo. Deir alt san iris ‘An Phoenix’, go ndúirt beirt cholúnaí san nuachtán’An Telegraph’ i Sasana, goraibh Éirí Amach 1916 ar aon dul le iompar ISIS. Ní chualamair gíocs as na húdaráis ag cáineadh an mhasla seo. Deir an iris ‘An Phoenix’, chomh maith go raibh cartún san ‘Irish Times’ ar an dtuairim céanna le beirt an Telegraph agus arís tá ciúineas do-chreidte. 48 West Kerry Live

Seo an leabhar deireanach a d’fhoilsigh Mícheál Ó Fionnáin, beannacht Dé leis, agus seo dán as an leabhar: Ghost Trawler I observed a ghost trawler anchor in the bay under The Plough and The Milky Way. The luminous lights shone round and the ghost trawler called me away, Northbound... But my loved ones cannot come with me now by the sweep of light on Kerry Head sound.
