Dingle Notes Richie Williams General Meeting . Dingle Business Chamber will be holding a Public Meeting on Monday March 13th in Benners Hotel beginning at 7.30p.m. The purpose of the gathering is to review the activities of the past 12 months and to plan for 2017. The Chambers contribution to the successful development of Dingle as a major tourist attraction has resulted in a huge increase in workload which has fallen on the shoulders of a few in recent years. It is hoped that a lot more people particularly those involved in business in town will get involved in various working groups and share the workload in future. There is no doubt but the success of other towns is down to a lot more people putting their shoulder to the wheel when and where required. So lets hope that that all chairs will be occupied on the 13th in Benners. Table Quiz. Bord Na Nog Daingean Ui Chuis are holding their annual Table Quiz on Friday March 3rd in Dannos beginning at 9p.m. Proceeds of course will go to the development of under age football in the club. All welcome and a good night out assured. Parade. The annual St Patricks Day Parade is scheduled to start from Ashmount Terrace at 12.45p.m.and will follow the traditional route with the review stand in Holyground. All types of entries will be welcome from individuals, clubs, groups, committees, business outlets etc and the usual music groups will be led by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band. We had a most colourful and interesting Parade last year but some local groups were noticably absent. The Parade is an ideal opportunity for all groups to be part of our national day of celebration and particularly a shopwindow for all local business interests to display their respective colours. So heres hoping for an even bigger parade this year. The morning Parade by the Fife and Drum Band will also start from Ashmount at 6a.m.and stop half way for Mass in St Marys Church before the final climb back to Ashmount again. What a wonderful and unique tradition and last year I reckon a crowd of over 500 turned out on a chilly morning to support the band and be part of the occasion. Molaim

sibh go leir. Awards. More glowing tribute to various outlets in our town with Benners Hotel, The Global Village and Idas being honoured in various awards categories at National level recently. Keep up the high standards folks and the awards and rewards will surely follow. Isn't it great to be able to point out to our visitors all the award winning premises in our town. Festival. The Global Rhythm Festival run by Cuisle Chorca Dhuibhne is moving to the June Bank Holiday Weekend (June 2nd to 5th) and another fine programme of music and drumming is lined up again this year.Yes the June Bank Holiday has been missing some activity and I am sure this Festival will fill that gap nicely indeed. Walking Festival. The weather was not too kind for the recent Dingle Walking Festival but that did not deter nearly 200 enthusiasts from taking part on both the Saturday and Sunday events and half that number in the Friday Night Walk. Colm Bambury wishes to thank all those who helped out over the weekend and of course all those who took part in the various walks also. This Walking Festival has tremendous potential judging by the response from those who travelled from outside the county especially for the weekend. What really was apparent to me was the respect and appreciation that walking enthusiasts have for our area and once some events are properly organised and supervised they will travel perhaps a good few times a year to take part in such specialised festivals. Certainly room for another such festival here in Dingle later in the year judging by the response to the recent event. Slan Tamall!!!.

The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 7th March will be the the Jim Jarmusch directed drama “Paterson”. The film stars Adam Driver as a bus driver and aspiring poet named Paterson and Golshifteh Farahani as his live-in romantic partner who dreams of being a country music star and opening a cupcake business. The film follows the life of Paterson over the course of a week quietly observing the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details. The following Tuesday on March 14th the feature will be the acclaimed drama “Manchester by the Sea”. The film stars Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler , a brooding, irritable loner who works as a handyman for a Boston apartment block. One damp winter day he gets a call summoning him to his hometown, north of the city. His brother’s heart has given out suddenly, and he’s been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and doubts about raising a teenager weren’t enough, his return to the past re-opens an unspeakable tragedy. At the Academy Awards, the film received six nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay, winning for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. 4 West Kerry Live

Camp Juniors FC Kennedy Cup Delight Last week the Kerry U14 squad of 20 for the annual Kennedy Cup Tournament in June was announced and CAMP JUNIORS FC were thrilled to see four of their players make the final cut. A great achievement for the Club. Maurice O Connell (Tullig, Castlegregory), Aodhán O Connor (Cliddaun, Dingle), Caolán O Connell (Illauncaum, Castlegregory) and Cian Wright (Garfinney, Lispole) all members of our U14 team were thrilled to be named in this years squad. Well done to the boys and congrats to their families and coaches...a lot of long hours spent training, driving to and from sessions....and now an exciting few months ahead as training and preparation step up for the Irelands premier schoolboy soccer tournament taking place in UL (June12th – 16th) Academy After a fantastic all day Blitz with teams from U6~U10 from Ballyhar Dynamos next up for the Academy is a trip to Cork Corinthian FC, one of Cork City’s leading schoolboys football clubs, on an interclub exchange this coming Saturday 4th March. With our U9 squad travelling along with all Academy coaches there will be great opportunity for sharing ideas, techniques and structures.

11’s & 12’s The 12s have found great form of late and an epic 5-4 win away to Killarney Celtic sees them climb to second place in Division 1. Impressive in this squad has been Jason Casey (Camp) in defence, Colm Rohan (Stradbally) in goals and Paudie Fitz (Fermoyle) in centre mid. Next up, a home tie v Park B on sat 4th. Meanwhile the 11s, (2 squads A & B) are finding it tough going in the Premier Division against the more established teams but coaches Eamon O Brien and Dermot Waugh are confident that come next season these lads will be competing well… showing great potential are in defence Dylan O Sullivan (Castle), on the left wing David Moore (Camp) and up front Timmy Cleary (Cloghane). Next up the 11s will host Mastergeeha A& B this Saturday in Camp. Girls Soccer Going From Strength To Strength Record numbers now signed up playing Girls soccer at the club at U8, U10 and U12 and what a result on our last outing when we travelled to league champions Listowel FC and came away with a share of the spoils in a great 4-4 draw. After an absence of 5 years we now have 20 girls training at U12s. Early results will put the league title beyond us but the improvement week on week is very encouraging. Particularly impressive are the Keel trio of Sophie and Always looking for more girls to get involved (Training Monday nights, 6-7.30pm) The 14S Advance In The Cup The JUNIORS put their recent league defeat away to Park A behind them and came away victors in the 1st round of the Kerry Cup beating the same opposition, Park A, 2-1 in a thriller. Maurice O Connell (Tullig) was to find form, in pure striker style, as he netted the 2 goals for the JUNIORS who had, against the run of play gone 1 behind early in the first half……coming on the back of a recent league win against Listowel the JUNIORS will be hoping for a favourable draw in round 2. Best for CAMP on the day were Cian Griffin (Camp) in the centre of the field, gritty and determined throughout and Donal Crean (Killelton) who again displayed some lovely touches, holding up play and distributing well. Next up a home game in the league against Killarney Celtic. U15s Finish League Well Last week saw the 15s play their last league game of the season away to Park B and they ran out winners on a 3-0 score line. A strong display from the JUNIORS with Conor Greany (Cloghane) very assured in goals, keeping the home side at bay through the first half when Camp played into a stiff breeze. Captain Daragh Hickson (Maharees) put in a tremendous display scoring a fine individual goal after Cian O Grady (Cloghane) had opened the scoring 5min into the second half. Centre half Caolán O Connell put the gloss on the score with a headed goal in the dying minutes. Still, two recent defeats have put the title beyond their reach and they must sit and wait to see other results play out before they know if the second place is theirs. Goalkeeper Course The JUNIORS would be starting dedicated Goalkeeper course for all

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Funding For The 2017 National Reserve Announced The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., has announced the allocation of funding for the 2017 National Reserve. Following recent consultation between the Department and the Direct Payments Advisory Committee, comprising members of the main farming bodies and agricultural advisory and education providers, it has been decided that a linear cut to the value of all Basic Payment Scheme entitlements will provide funding of just over €5 million to the National Reserve in 2017. Successful applicants to the National Reserve receive an allocation of entitlements at National Average value or a top-up to the National Average value on entitlements that are below the national average. In addition, the 2017 Young Farmers Scheme will also be available to provide an additional payment to any person who qualifies as a ‘young farmer’. The National Reserve on-line application form together with full terms and conditions will be available when the scheme opens for applications in March 2017. To qualify as a ‘young farmer’ an applicant must meet the following conditions: • be participating in the Basic Payment Scheme in the year s/he submits an application • is no more than 40 years of age during the calendar year in which s/he submits an application under the BPS • is setting up an agricultural holding for the first time or has set up such a holding during the five years preceding the first submission of the Basic Payment Scheme application. The same applies for a new entrant to farming. In line with the requirements under National Reserve schemes since the introduction of the Single Payment Scheme in 2005, successful candidates will be required to meet an appropriate agricultural education qualification standard. Successful candidates will also be required to have an off-farm income of less than €40,000 in either of the 2015 or 2016 tax years. There is no off-farm income limit for the Young Farmers Scheme. Responsible Dog Ownership The Department of Agriculture, Local Authorities and Councils and the IFA are working to highlight the issue of responsible dog ownership and has issued a stark warning to dog owners to keep their pets under control. 1. Stop the dogs On encountering a dog attack on sheep, the first priority must be to stop the attack immediately, apprehend the marauding dog or dogs and look after the welfare of the sheep. 2. Follow the Law It is very important that sheep farmers are aware of, and follow the law, in the context of protecting their sheep flock against marauding dogs. Under the 1984 Control of Dogs Act it states under the section – Defence in action for damages for shooting a dog. Shooting of dogs in circumstances where they attack or even worry sheep or other farm animals is permitted by law, once such evidence is clearly shown. Farmers need to be very careful in their actions, but once they are so careful, the onus is on the dog owner to explain why their dog was where it was and doing what it was doing. 3. Inform the Gardai It is very important that a sheep farmer would notify the Gardai of any dog attack on their sheep. If a dog is shot following or threating a sheep flock, the person who shot the dog must notify the member in charge at the nearest Garda Station to the place where the dog was shot, within forty-eight hours. It is important that the owner of the sheep would report the incident in full, make an official complaint and request that a full investigation is undertaken and report filed. In addition, the farmer should request a site visit from the Garda. 4. Ring the Dog Warden Immediate contact should be made with the local dog warden of any sheep attack and the full details reported with a request for a site visit and full report to be filed. 5. Contact your local farmer organisation All dog attacks should be notified to the local farmers representative. 6. Ring the Vet To look after any injured sheep and protect the welfare of the flock, a vet should be contacted and asked to visit and inspect the flock. The farmer should ask the vet to write a brief report recording the important statistics such as the numbers dead, severely injured and 10 West Kerry Live

treated. This report is vital evidence on the case. 7. Keep the Evidence/Take a picture Pictures of dead sheep, injured sheep, dead dogs etc., should be taken on the spot with a smart phone etc., as this again can prove to be Vitally important in terms of evidence. All dead sheep must be disposed of and recorded into the knackery. 8. Get a valuation of losses Contact a local auctioneer or valuer and have any dead sheep valued on the spot and any other losses documented. 9. Inform your insurance company It is very important to inform your insurance company of any dog attack as soon as possible after the incident occurs. Likewise it is very important to establish the insurance company of the dog owner (home and/or farm insurance). 10. Tell your sheep farming neighbours It is very important that other sheep farmers in the local area are aware of any dog attack in their vicinity, particularly if the dogs are not apprehended. Utilise the local community alert or text messaging facility if available. The bottom line here is for dog owners to take care of their pet and for farmers to use a degree of common sense. A phone call may be marginally more expensive than a bullet/cartridge, but may be more expedient. Reduction In The Inspection Fee Payable On Exports Of Calves Under Three Months Of Age The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D, has announced that he was reducing the veterinary inspection fee payable on live exports of calves under three months of age. The new fee will be €1.20 per animal, reduced from €4.80. This reduction will bring greater equity in respect of fees payable per consignment in respect of calves, weanlings and adult cattle. Fees payable on bovine animals over 3 months of age will remain at €4.80 per animal. The continental market for young calves has traditionally been important for dairy farmers, providing an important source of income and underpinning the market for such stock. The export of these calves reduces the potential for over-supply of adult cattle at a later stage, which would put the beef market under pressure. Irish Beef - Enhanced Access To Saudi Arabia An agreement has been reached on improved access for Irish beef to Saudi Arabia, on the first day of the Irish agri-food Trade Mission to the Gulf region. As part of this trade delegation, Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed TD also discussed a number of technical certification issues of interest to the dairy and other sectors, and both sides agreed that the process for Irish sheep meat access should commence, and arrangements are being made to follow up on the necessary technical steps. Last year Saudi Arabia was the third largest non-EU destination for Irish agri-food exports, only behind China and the USA. Total Agri food exports to Saudi Arabia increased from €92 million in 2013 to €136 million in 2016, representing an increase of almost 50% over the course of only 3 years. This is a rapidly expanding market place and Ireland needs to be part of it, despite what anyone thinks. Water Quality Inspections Kerry County Council staff have over the past number of weeks carried out a number of inspections relating to water quality, and the risks and occurrences of pollution in the county. The largest risks to water quality are from Silage pits and stored bales, dairy washings and leaking slurry tanks. It is vital that these risks not only be reduced, but they must be eliminated, as the threat to water quality effects all. Restocking of salmonoid fish species to these rivers and streams is time consuming and extremely expensive. If you allow farm contaminants to pollute these waters, you put the environment at risk and expose yourself to serious penalties. These KCC inspectors are around, and are only doing a job. Be respectful to them, and more importantly, make their, your and my life easier by ensuring that nothing goes into your nearby stream, other than what’s supposed to. Gorse Fires Since Wednesday 1st March, it has been illegal to burn gorse on hills, etc. any siting or reports of same to DAFM are likely to result in an investigation, so farmers are advised to refrain from burning any scrub or furze until 1st September 2017. We have had suitable dry conditions since September last, and many land-owners took advantage of these suitable conditions to clear large area of invasive species from their hill farms. They should be commended for the responsible way this was carried out. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Lead Us Not into Temptation! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

The significance of Lent has become diluted among an ever-evolving society, but even in Modern Ireland the imprint of the Catholic tradition of Lent remains ingrained in our psyche. Lent is a time of reflection, sacrifice, penance and preparation for the celebration of Easter in the Christian religious calendar. Religion aside, this is probably the leanest time of the year in Nature as Winter stores are waning and Spring hasn’t quite sprung yet. Of course, a glance around the supermarket does not reflect Nature’s dwindling supplies and the idea of “giving up something for Lent” may not seem like such a sacrifice with so much choice and alternatives at the ready! Nowadays, Lenten sacrifices reflect the times we live in and many “give up” sweets, treats, booze and the fags. Even so, the mass intention among our society to ditch a vice for Lent whether it is for religious reasons or otherwise can only be a good thing. Not to take away from the sacrifice and self-denial of Lent, the following tips are to help you make it through the next 40 days and 40 nights! Sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cakes - whatever way you take your sugar abstaining from it can be challenging. Unlike other vices such as nicotine and alcohol, our bodies actually need sugar (or glucose) to survive. When cutting out sugary and refined foods from your diet it is important to provide a steady stream of glucose, in the form of complex carbohydrates - whole fruit, whole vegetables and whole grains. Cravings arise when our blood sugar levels drop because of long gaps between meals or skipping meals. The physical craving for sugar is the body’s way of screaming “feed me” but for many this call is answered by sugar and little else. Too much sugar, insulin takes control and removes sugar from the blood leaving you craving for more sugar - and so it goes on, the merry dance of sugar and insulin! Keep blood sugars on an even note throughout the day to avoid cravings. Always have breakfast, avoid long gaps between meals and eat unrefined carbohydrates as close to their natural state as possible. Supplements such as Chromium, Cinnamon, Jerusalem Artichoke and B vitamins are useful for sugar cravings but only as an addition to a natural, wholesome diet. It is easy to assume that cravings for alcohol are a result of withdrawal and addiction. This is most likely true as alcohol serves no beneficial purpose to the body. There is, however, a large body of evidence that some nutritional supplements offer support during periods of alcohol withdrawal. Most studies point towards B - complex vitamins although all major vitamins (A,C,D and E) in addition to B-complex have been found to play a role. Alcohol consumption is linked with the depletion of all B vitamins and in particularly B1 (Thiamin) - needed for the brain and nervous system. Supplementing with B-complex with extra B1 can help lessen the desire to drink. Studies also suggest that supplementing with the amino acid L-glutamine can reduce cravings and the anxiety linked to alcohol withdrawal. From a food perspective, lessening cravings for alcohol is helped by reducing sugar and caffeine in the diet. Milk Thistle is a herb which supports detoxification and promotes the regeneration of liver cells. All detoxification pathways will benefit from a clean, green diet and plenty of fluids as pure water and herbal teas.

wholesome diet. Many fear the weight gain associated with giving up cigarettes. This is most likely due to nicotine being an appetite suppressant and that people tend to replace their habitual cigarette for food. Avoid falling into this trap by cleaning up the diet at the same time as giving up cigarettes. It might seem like too much to do but you will feel the health benefits of both actions sooner than either one on its own. Supplements helpful during the first few nicotine-free weeks include antioxidant support from vitamins A,C and E and Selenium and Zinc. Again, the B-vitamins are very useful especially when paired with super-antioxidant glutathione in the form of N-acetylcysteine (NAC). NAC is used therapeutically for addictions and compulsive behavior and is shown to work well with B-complex vitamins especially B5. Respiratory support can come from simple herbal infusions of thyme, elecampane and elderberry extract. The addictive properties of sugar, alcohol and nicotine makes it more challenging to give them the boot. Nutritional support is certainly a step in the right direction but sometimes the emotional dependency keeps us anchored to our bad habits. If Lent provides the impetus and the spiritual support to banish these demons, the rewards will be great for both the body and soul! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

Thursday, February 26. The times they are a-changing. The Church of England has voted to allow the ordination of women priests and the move is supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie. The debate over this move has been going on for years. It’s not finalised yet but it looks promising. Will it happen in the Catholic church some day?

By Ted Creedon Thursday, February 19, 1987 The kids have a half day from school today for some unknown reason. Slept late this morning after watching the General Election results into the small hours. Charlie Haughey must be very disappointed after the election count which shows Fianna Fáil three seats short of a majority thanks to Dessie O’Malley and the Progressive Democrats who turned in a great show by winning 14 seats. Charlie will now need the support of Blaney, Kemmy and Tony Gregory to stay in power. There are rumours of another election within a year but it’s doubtful if any party will have the stomach for it - except the PDs maybe. The result is good for the less well-off people of the country - there won’t be any serious cuts in social welfare such as Fine Gael were proposing for the next budget.

Friday, February 20. Cold but fine today. Charlie Haughey has retired to Inishvickillaun for ‘prayer and meditation’ following the General Election results. The Dáil will be back on March 10 but a lot of horse-trading will be done before then. It’s 25 years since John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth and only 18 years since the Americans landed on the Moon.

Saturday, February 21. Fine sunny day, cool but little or no wind. Took the kids to 7.30pm Mass tonight. When we emerged Fianna Fáil election candidate Breandán MacGearailt addressed the crowd and thanked the people of Dingle for their support in the election. Eamonn Coghlan set a world indoor record in Los Angeles for the 2,000 meters taking four seconds off the existing record. Coghlan also holds the world indoor mile record.

old Green Road to the waterfalls and rested at the concrete bridge. Then there arrived behind us Michael O’Connor of Cluais, who is the maintenance man at the Convent in Dingle. He was accompanied by Sister de Sales. We chatted for a while - shared some sweets and took separate paths back to the car park. En route we came across several dead sheep and one dead fox. We also saw a most unusual-looking shaggy black horse. Its upper jaw was several inches shorter than the lower jaw so that its tongue stuck out permanently.

Friday, February 27. Mild and windy day. The colour slides came back - quick service. Had forgotten what was on them and surprised to find some images from our win at Fenit regatta, in the Dún Síon canoe two years ago, and also shots of our competing in the All-Ireland currach championships in Spiddal. Ronald Reagan’s Chief of Staff Donald Regan was forced to resign over failing to protect his president from adverse media publicity relating to the Iran-Contra scandal.

Monday, February 23. The kids were off school again today. Sent off a roll of colour film plus two rolls of colour slides for processing. Spent some time preparing an address for the AGM of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society tonight. Travelled to the meeting in the county library in Tralee with Tim Collins. About 40 people attended and there was plenty of discussion about surveys, money, tours, developing heritage groups in Kerry, establishing a museum in Tralee etc. Concerns were expressed about the destruction of field monuments and the responsibility of the Dept. of Agriculture in protecting such monuments. Home by 11pm. American pop artist Andy Warhol died of heart failure yesterday. He was only 58.

Saturday, February 28. Bought some tools in Fitzys during the sale and bought a bag of American coal for £6. The Russians have been testing nuclear devices underground in Kazakhstan this week and now Gorbachev is trying to organise an international treaty banning nuclear testing.

Sunday, March 1. Dull and foggy start to March then turned to heavy rain for the rest of the day. Took the kids to 11 o’clock Mass where we were subjected to another lecture on capitalism, profit, socialism and a barter economy - the saints preserve us!

Tuesday, February 24. Drove to Baile na nGall and did a 15-minute interview with Micheál Ó Sé about last night’s AGM in Tralee. Attended meeting of the Dingle Heritage Centre in the old Tech at 5pm. We discussed the coming HOME RIDES ABOUT STABLES DINGLE season’s exhibitions and plans. Dr Finbar Ó Sé was in the chair. Also present Riding Holidays were Tim Collins, Liam Higgins, Gearóid Ó Brosnacháin and Brother Lynch.Gave him a lift back to the CBS afterwards. Weather cool but fine today. Took the kids for a walk from Lough to the lighthouse before dinner. Charlie’s helicopter is passing over and back, bringing pals to the island to discuss how best to negotiate support from the independent Dáil members. Drove to Coumduff , Annascaul, after dinner. We parked near the lake and walked along the old road to the inner reaches of the valley. The atmosphere was peaceful, the beauty awe inspiring, the weather perfect. We climbed the

Rain at first but cleared to mild foggy weather with some sunny spells later. Had a phone call from County librarian Kathleen Browne to say that the position of manager at Muckross House is advertised in today’s Irish Times to fill the vacancy left by the untimely death of Ned Myers. The salary scale is up to £18,000 p.a.

Tales From The Gáirdín Peg (nee Kavanagh) and Stanley Doyle. Peg originally hails from Ventry and Stanley from Annascaul. I met my husband to be, Stanley, at a dance in Lispole. Soon after I left on my own for Chicago, Illinois. I went on my own by boat. I was broken hearted leaving Ireland but I had to leave for work. It took 7 days and 7 nights to get there. Stanley followed a year later and we met at a dance where he was playing his new accordian - he played Irish music all night. Our wedding took place at St. Ethelreda’s in Chicago in 1959. We had our wedding breakfast in a restaurant and that evening our Irish friends put on a buffet at a hall. Stanley played his new accordian all night, as usual. For our honeymoon, not having been used to Chicago, we explored the city.

Of equal importance is the fact that the club catered for u-6, u-8, u-10, u-12, u-13, u-14, u-16, Minors and Senior teams. There are also u-12, u-13 and u-16 girls’ teams. The pressure exerted on the pitch at Strand Road by twelve different teams during training and matches is not sustainable in the long term. As a result, plans are currently afoot to upgrade the playing surface and the dressing rooms. These include the renovation of the shower, toilet and changing facilities, drainage works on the present pitch and the purchase of additional land for training. An astro turf surface has recently been installed at both goalmouths. The old fire station in the village has also been acquired from Kerry County Council and is currently being equipped as a gym. It will soon be open to members. In an effort to defray the cost of these improvements, Castlegregory GAA Club is currently undertaking a major fundraising drive. We are asking for a contribution of €250. For this, subscribers will receive: • Club membership, value €50. • Two lines in the Club Lotto draw for one year. The draw takes place every second Tuesday, value €100.

Match Report: Castlegregory scored an eight point win over Lispole in Round 4 of the West Kerry League, played at Páirc an Caisleáin. Although torrential rain overnight had made ground conditions heavy, the afternoon turned out bright and sunny. Castlegregory had the better of the opening exchanges with points from Alan Fitzgerald and Adam O’ Donnell. Brandon Hoare was fouled in the square following a great run by Jason Griffin. The resultant penalty was converted by Alan Fitzgerald. Finding themselves five points in arrears after the first quarter, Lispole sprung to life. Two points from Declan O’ Sullivan, another from Shane Moriarty and a goal by Declan O’ Sullivan put the visitors ahead after seventeen minutes. Castlegregory replied with points from Jason Griffin and Brandon Hoare to inch ahead. An Alan Fitzgerald pointed free increased the margin. Not to be outdone, Lispole ended strongly with further points from Shane Moriarty and Declan O’ Sullivan. Half time score 1-05 each. Great pressure by the Castlegregory forwards resulted in a goal by Brandon Hoare one minute into the second half. After Declan O’ Sullivan and Alan Fitzgerald had exchanged points from frees, the home side dominated proceedings for the remainder of the game. A long range point form play by Jordan Quirke, pointed frees from Brandon Hoare, Alan Fitzgerald and a point from Joe O’ Connor, following a surging run, increased their lead. A great run by Jimmy O’ Grady resulted in a goal by Brandon Hoare. Jimmy O’ Grady with another point, capped a fine team display. Two late points by Declan O’ Sullivan were insufficient to bridge the gap that had developed. Final Score: Castlegregory 3-12; Lispole 1-10. 18 West Kerry Live

Steamed Mussels with Tomato and Chorizo Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School A large bowl of steaming mussels and some crusty bread is a delicious treat either on a cold evening or on a warm summers day. We are fortunate to have some of the tastiest mussels available to us, especially with Glenbeigh Shellfish and their famous Cromane mussels right here on our doorstep. We probably most often cook them with shallots, garlic, a little white wine and a dash of cream which will give you such a delicious bowl of mussels. The good thing is that they work well with so many other flavours as well such as Asian flavours with ginger, lemongrass and coconut milk. For this recipe I decided to look towards Spanish flavours with a little tomatoes and chorizo. You won’ t be disappointed! Once you know how to prepare them, the cooking process is very easy. To prepare them all you have to do is to inspect them to check that each mussel is tightly closed and the shell is intact and not broken. Once you have given them a wash, squeeze each mussel lightly and pull away the thread like beard from the shell. If it has any barnacles use a knife or scrape them off the side of the sink (you will find that most mussels are well washed now so you shouldn’t find many barnacles on them). This whole process will only take a few minutes and now they are ready to cook. Try to prepare them just before you cook them. If you have to store mussels for a day or two before cooking keep a damp cloth other them in the fridge. Ingredients 100g chorizo, chopped 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, crushed 100ml dry white wine 250g tinned chopped tomatoes 1.5 kg mussels, cleaned handful flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped dash of rapeseed oil salt and pepper Method Put a pot over medium heat, add a little oil and then add the chorizo. Allow this to cook for about 5 minutes until it starts to brown a little. At this stage add the shallots, garlic and thyme and let it cook for a further 5 minutes. Add the wine and let it cook for about 3-5 minutes. Once the wine has reduced a little add the tomatoes and cook them for a few minutes. Add in the mussels and cover the pot with a lid. Cook this for about 4 minutes or so. Add in the parsley and cover again for another minute. All of the mussels should have opened at this stage, any that haven’t need to be discarded. Season with salt and pepper and serve with crusty bread from Bácús. Enjoy!!!

Gregory Peck and Dingle Helen O’Dell In September 1968, American actor Gregory Peck set foot on Irish soil for the first time. In Minard Lispole, accompanied by his wife Veronique, the Hollywood giant surprised his relatives by walking into their house and boldly announcing to Jack Curran, “I’m your cousin from America.” From that day on, Gregory Peck’s connection to the Kingdom would be forever bound. He had traced his Grandmother Catherine Ashe to Dingle. She had immigrated to the United States where she met and married Samuel Peck.” I feel a sense of coming home,” said the Hollywood star of To Kill a Mockingbird. While in Dingle, he paid a visit to the Dingle Sacristy and was given access to marriage certificates and birth records relating to his Grandmother. His presence in the town stirred up great excitement with local’s eager to catch a glimpse of the silver screen legend. In Ashe’s pub on Main Street he chatted with his relatives over pints of Guinness and had established a connection with Thomas Ashe, patriot in the 1916 rising. Gregory Peck became a frequent visitor to the kingdom and on one trip the academy award winning actor met with more than thirty of his Irish descendants in Dingle’s Skellig Hotel, signing autographs and posing for family photos. He spent time in Killarney and went to Caherciveen to the grave of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty to honour the Kerry man he played in the movie The Scarlet and the Black in 1983. Gregory Peck delighted in the peace and serenity of the kingdom and in particular the town of Dingle. Its enticing beauty had a special place in his heart, which drew him here time and time again. His on screen talents and connection to the town inspired the Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in the Art of Film. An award given annually at the Dingle International Film Festival to actors and directors for their outstanding contribution to the movie industry. Dublin actor Gabriel Byrne, the first recipient of the award said, “It is an honour to accept the Gregory Peck Award in memory of a great actor whose work transcends time and continues to inspire.” Who will be this year’s winner? On Thursday March 23 to Sunday 26, the town of Dingle will be brimming with people who come from all corners to participate in the Dingle Film Festival 2017. Full Festival Programme in the next issue. 20 West Kerry Live

Spring is definitely in the air. Daffodils are flowering, buds are starting to open, grass is starting to grow and the weather is (supposed to be!) warming slightly. This time of the year it can seem a little daunting, looking out into the garden and seeing all the jobs that need to be done before Summer gets here. But it is also a great opportunity to make a headstart and get the garden ready properly so you can enjoy it to its full potential in Summer.

Most plants can still be pruned at this time of year. Formative pruning can help regenerate shrubs and hedges that have become straggley, and encourage them to bush out with new growth in Spring. Shrubs that flower on last year’s wood and that are blooming in Spring, such as camellias and rhododendrons, should be left until they have finished flowering. Other shrubs that flower on new growth, such as buddleja or spiraea, can be pruned in late Winter or early Spring. If in doubt, the RHS has a very in-depth website that details pruning times for all major cultivated varieties that we are likely to encounter here. This is also still a good time to plant barerooted shrubs, trees and hedges. The window for this type of planting is between November and the end of March. Deciduous plants, that are dormant at this time, can be moved and transplanted without the need for pots. This makes them very economical to buy, as opposed to buying them potted during the summer. I find that they have a higher chance of survival and are able to establish and acclimatise better, due to less stress being imposed on the plant. This method is particulary suited to both fruit trees and ornamentals as well as setting hedging. I always try to use native trees and hedging where appropriate as they are often very suited to our difficult climate and provide food and shelter for our native wildlife. I particularly like the look of a beech hedge, especally in winter when the leaves turn golden brown but remain, providing great shelter and interest all year round.

Now is the time to plant summer bulbs to ensure a good display. Bulbs such as alliums, gladioli and dahlia tubers will all do well given a little shelter from the worst of the winds and will continue to flower and multiply for years to come. It is recommended to lift summer flowering bulbs during the Winter as they can be damaged by frosts or rot in very wet soil. This also gives an opportunity to divide the multiplied bulbs and increase your stock.

• Cócairí sa tionscal a dhein an gá lena leithéid de shainchúrsa a aithint. Tá ábhar an chúrsa bunaithe ar a riachtanaisí siúd.

Finally, if the weather is still too wet to inspire you to go out and get muddy, then have a browse through the seed catalogues, or look online, and plan your summer garden. Ordering seed is best done early, as popular varieties can sell out quickly. Flowers such as sweet peas, lupins and marigolds are all exceptionally easy to grow from seed. There are also great wildflower collections available that are a beautiful way to plant up difficult spaces and really benefit local wildlife, such as our declining bee populations.

• Following a need identified by industry, this programme has been purposely designed, together with Head Chefs, and is absolutely geared towards Chefs in busy, demanding kitchen environments.

Planning your garden now and breaking up the workload into manageable chunks will really pay off in the Summer when the hard work can be admired and appreciated. Until then, happy gardening. Thoir Thuaidh Is beag á chlos againn fé thoghachán na Sé Chontae atá ag béal an dorais againn. An bhfuil Foster an DUP ag iarraidh praiseach a dhéanamh do chúrsaí ó Thuaidh. Ní hí an chéad duine óna páirtí go raibh an chloch sa mhuirilte aici. An babtha seo an gcaillfidh na hAondachtooirí an DUP vótaí de bharr an toghcháin a chaitheamh sa mhullach ar am bpobal nó an mbeidh tionchar ag aistrithe vótaí ón UUP dtí aan SDLP. Níl móran idir an SDLP, an Páirtí Glas nó Alliance. An aistreóidh mórán don UUP dtí a DUP ainneoin an mí-bhuíochas atá eatortha. Cad fén ndream ‘People before Profit’. D’fhéadfadh siad trí shuíochán a gnóthú ach de thoradh laighdú sa líon suíochán i dtoghcheantair an mbeadh a ndóthain le déanamh acu ceann nó ar a mhéid an dara ceann! Déarfainn go mbeidh athrú beag ach siad an DUP, Sinn Féin, an SDLP agus Alliance, PBP seans beag an Páirtí Glas a bheidh mar atá. An cheist mhór an gcaillfidh an DUP suíocháin?

Taoiseach Is abhar gáire a bhfuil ráite ag TD-anna sínsireach i bpáirtí Fhine Gael. Lá amháin tá siad ag cogarnach go mbeadh díothú ortha fé Enda, agus dream eile ag glamaíl go bhfuil sé in am ag Enda an tsrian a thabhairt do bhall eile don bpáirtí. Níl aon teora leis an gcáineadh atá i gcúinní díograsóirí agus iad go láidir don dtuairum go bhfuil sé ina am do Enda bogadh leis sara mbeidh an páirtí scriosta, gan cheann ná eirbeall. An bhfuil an traidisiún a bhí ag Ciarraí gur ag deire na gcluichí a dhéinfadh siad rabach. Is minic a tharla sé agus bítí ag súil leis. Rud nár maith le aon Chiarraíoch gur sa deire a theipfeadh siad. Ní hé deire an tsaoil é.Tá dhá fhoirean Ultach tréis bara-tuisle a bhaint as Bhleá Cliath ach inár gcás-ne is chun deiridh a bhuaileann an bharrathuisle sinn. Correction of Upper Cross Syndrome (Upper Body Postural Correction Exercises) Eddie O’Grady Ok so we have discussed the effects of poor posture in our previous article. We now need to discuss how to correct it. This article should also prove interesting to personal trainers, who are sometimes also presented with this condition. Just to briefly refresh things for readers. Poor posture often manifests itself in a condition known as ‘’upper cross syndrome’’. With this, tightness in the upper trapezius and levator scapula muscles on the dorsal side crosses with tightness of the pectoral major and minor muscles. Weakness of the deep cervical flexors ventrally crosses with weakness of the middle and lower trapezius. This pattern of imbalance creates joint dysfunction, particularly at the atlanto-occipital joint, C4-C5 segments, cervicothoracic joint (C7T1), glenohumeral joints (shoulders), and T4-T5 (mid thoracic) segments. Common symptoms of upper cross syndrome include forward head posture - rounded shoulders a hunched upper back - headaches - shoulder pain, upper back and/or neck pain. There are many exercises that you can use to correct upper crossed syndrome. You need to stretch out the tight muscles (pectorals, pectoral minor muscles, front deltoids, upper 34 West Kerry Live

trapezius and levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoids, suboccipitals, latissimus dorsi) and strengthen the weak muscles (rhomboids, middle and lower traps).

Upper Cross Syndrome

Hold 20 seconds. Repeat x3. Stretches pecs, front deltoids, thoracic spine . Strengthens posterior neck muscles.

Community Giving Immunity From The Cold Colin Sheeran Dingle Benners Hotel is looking for friendly and enthusiastic staff to join our team.

It’s often lamented that community has disappeared in Ireland. I think community is where you find it. By that I mean you may have to look for it, but community is there. Probably unknown to most going about their daily business, there is a strong community of sea swimmers in my area. Some of them meet up every day, more of them meet up every Sunday. Sundays throughout the seasons you can see the swimmers meet at the designated spot at the designated time. The group I know have a non-tidal spot so they can be regular, with standing orders, fixed times. They turn up, probably using the same communication techniques as migrating birds. There are no text messages. There is no double checking or second guessing. No one is in charge. It is on? It’s always on. And so they arrive.

We currently have the following vacancies;

• Accommodation Assistants • Food and Beverage Assistants We have both full time and part time positions available. Competitive Package offered depending on experience Immediate Start Applicants should apply in writing for the attention of Mary Evans General Manager Dingle Benners Hotel Main Street Dingle Co. Kerry Or via email to manager@dinglebenners.com

They settle into their patterns. Some arrive and assess the scene. Looking to the horizon for indicators from nature. Far off weather patterns. Distant swells on the sea. Things I do not understand. Red sky in the morning maybe? They absorb the scene, they gauge the mood of the sea. Maybe silently make a deal with her? Others are all business. Arrive. Togs already on under appropriate specialist clothing. Minimise time of exposure before entry. Strategies to conserve energy. Focus on efficiency. Core temperature variations kept to a minimum. Some talk a lot , some talk a little. Some make the same jokes every week. The patterns are preparation for the different personalities, differing approaches to upcoming adversity. The wind and the waves the rhythm of the sea. The swimmers adjusting their rhythms, ready to join with, to submerge in, nature. In summer or winter there are many changes but there is always cold. Cold out of the water and cold in the water. Real cold in the water. It is a challenge, no doubt. It takes resolve. It takes self control, a degree of mastery. The entry is a moment of truth, a moment of reckoning. We forget sometimes our bodies run on electricity. Those nerves. Charges. We misplace our power and vitality. Cold water is vitality. Visceral. Signals that cannot be ignored, reminders that cannot be mistaken. Dialling up that charge. An internal display of power. Exhilarating. Freezing too. While attendance is a constant, the length and seriousness of the swim does vary wildly with the season. This is practical and natural. Some in and out, some out and out, some dipping, some swimming, swimming. Coming out of the water feels like redemption. A test passed. A promise kept. A clean slate. A brand new body in a brand new world. It’s cathartic, religious maybe. And they regroup on the beach. Informal and unarranged. Some electrified, some calmed and contented. There’s generous offering of wine gums or tea. Sweet and heat multiplied and savoured. Shared bravery breeds natural comradery. Small bravery does too. No-one says stuff like that; they just offer you a wine gum and say that your flip flops are just the job. But you know what they mean. And it’s really nice. Even on the edge of this small gathering. It’s nice to see what people are really like. Community giving immunity from the cold, colds and maybe some other modern ills.

Laune Rangers 1-14

Our seniors put in a good performance - but it was not the result that we wanted in the Mid Kerry League today. We led by 0-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes with Darren Houlihan kicking well from placed balls. Rangers finished the half strong and led by a goal at the break, 1-7 to 0-7. We were slow to restart and the home side stretched that lead to 1-9 to 0-7 after 49 minutes. Then we refocused and hit a purple patch with points from Micheál Shaughnessy and Mikey Houlihan. Then we hit two quick goals: one from a Paul Patrick O’Sullivan penalty and one from debutant Lee Carey to lead 2-10 to 1-12 with five minutes left. We had plenty of chances to extend our lead but failed to capitalise. Rangers won two late frees, converted by Colm O’Shea to lead by one in injury time. We had one last chance to draw level but it trailed agonisingly wide. In the bigger picture this game should provide plenty of encouragement for the year ahead. Team: Paudie McCarthy: Liam Casey Eoghan Walsh Ian Costelloe; Brendan Foley Liam Teahan Shane Ahern; Liam Walsh 0-1 Donnchadh Walsh 0-2; Darren Houlihan 0-4f Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 1-1 (0-1f, 1-0 pen) Seán Teahan; Mikey Houlihan 0-1 Emmet Casey. Cian O’Keeffe. Replacements: Micheál Shaughnessy 0-1 for Seán Teahan (25m) Danny O’Connor for Liam Casey (45m) Ben Bradley for Ian Costelloe (45m) Lee Carey 1-0 for Cian O’Keeffe (50m). Book Launch: The Feast of St. Martin in Ireland The Feast of St. Martin falls on the 11th of November, and used to be celebrated throughout most parts of Ireland in an unusual way. Householders, usually led by the woman of the house, would stand on the doorstep at sundown on the eve of the feast, and kill an animal or bird by slitting its throat with a knife. They used to then spill the blood on the threshold, and let drops fall from the dying animal in the four corners of the house. In some places, they would even anoint the members of the family on the forehead with the blood. This, they believed, kept people safe from disease, death and evil spirits during the coming winter. The custom persisted long into the 20th century in many places, and even into the 21st in some parts of the west. People also believed that it was wrong to turn wheels of any kind on St. Martin’s Day, and that great punishments would fall on anyone who yoked a horse and cart, turned a spinning wheel, or worked a mill. The sacrifice and shedding of blood on this day was once part of the ancient festival of Samhain, but changed in the medieval period to the new date of November 11th. This fascinating topic is discussed in Billy Mag Fhloinn’s new book, Blood Rite: The Feast of St. Martin in Ireland, which will be launched by journalist and folklorist Seán Mac an tSíthigh in An Lab, Dingle on March 3rd at 7.30pm The book is available in Dingle bookshops, or at www.tradition.ie

Lá ‘le Mártain Titeann an Fhéile Mhártain ar an 11ú Samhain, agus ba nós coitianta in Éirinn tráth ná fuil a tharraingt in onóir don naomh. Bean a’ tí de ghnáth a dhein an marú, ar leic an dorais le titim na hoíche ar an 10ú, agus ligtí an fhuil titim ar an tairseach, agus i gceithre cúinne an tí. Uaireanta d’úsáidtí an fhuil chun muintir an tí a bhaisteadh ar an éadain. Chreidtí go raibh an fhuil seo beannaithe, agus gur choimeád sí daoine slán ón mbás, galar agus olcas i rith an gheimhridh. Bhiodh cosc ar rotha a chasadh ar an lá seo chomh maith, agus staon daoine ó aon saghas oibre le capall is cairt, tuirne nó muileann. Is iomaí finscéal a léiríonn an droththoradh a bhí ar daoine a d’imigh in aghaidh an naoimh, agus a chur roth ag casadh ar an 11ú. D’fhán na nósanna seo beo i bhformhór na tire go dtí an 20ú aois, agus in áiteanna áirithe san iarthar go dtí an 21ú. Baineann an íobairt seo le seanfhéile na Samhna, ach bogadh ar aghaidh é go dtí Lá ‘le Mártain sna meánaoiseanna. Pléitear an t-ábhar suimiúil seo sa leabhar nua le Billy Mag Fhloinn, darbh ainm ‘Blood Rite, The Feast of St. Martin in Ireland’. Seolfaidh an t-iriseoir is béaloideasóir Seán Mac an tSíthigh an leabhar sa Lab, An Daingean ar an 3ú Marta ar 7.30 in. Beidh an leabhar ar fáil i siopaí leabhar an Daingin, no ar www.tradition.ie

When Compassion Leads to Change On Monday, March 13th in St. John’s Church, Castle St., Tralee, Richard Moore will speak on his experience of healing, forgiveness and the transforming power of compassion. This event, starting at 7.30pm, is being hosted by St. John’s parish And the Diocese of Kerry’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation committee. Entrance is free and all are welcome. As a ten year old child, Richard Moore was blinded by a rubber bullet during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Just as his life emerged as a triumph out of tragedy through his experiences of compassion in the face of challenges, Richard’s founding of the charity Children in Crossfire draws on his vision to work towards building a better world for those caught in the crossfire of global poverty, injustice and inequality. 40 West Kerry Live

Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group Spring’s here at last and Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group is taking stock as well as looking to the coming season. Since being democratically elected by members of the local community the ATTAG voluntary committee has been spreading the word about Annascaul far and wide and garnering support both inside and outside of the community. New ground continues to be broken and initiatives set in motion. For instance, it was heartening to see folk gather at the community centre to put up and decorate the village Christmas tree and then to participate in the singing and switching-on of the lights by the Falvey girls Lily and Hannah. It illustrated perfectly the central idea that ATTAG cherishes, namely the drawing together of the people of Annascaul in celebration of the place where we live. This year there will see new boxes and planters introduced into village and other locations around the area especially by the newly-painted bridge. The repainting of the bridge was made possible by the Percival family, who are the custodians of the South Pole Inn and promoters of local hero Tom Crean’s memory. The Percivals also organise the New Year’s Eve parade and bring pipers, visitors and blazing turf torches to the village. Sculptor Jerome O’Connor’s monument is also going to be sporting sport fresh blooms this year and the Main Street will see new street furniture and blossoming plants. The membership of the FAS squad who provide the labour for these enhancements has recently been increased and more power to their elbow. Significant funds were also donated to ATTAG via the Christmas raffle at the South Pole and the pub quiz facilitated by Hanifin’s Bar. As always local businesses and individuals supported both of those endeavours with the donations of prizes. And the local press including West Kerry Live and The Kerryman continue to afford ATTAG coverage. A fresh development in recent months has been the offering of resources from other civic interests to help make concrete ATTAG’s efforts. Prime examples are the donations given to ATTAG by the Church of Ireland congregation and the Kerry Education and Training Board totalling several hundred euros. This generosity enables research into and the continuing promotion of the preservation of the old graveyard in the village by ATTAG and its heritage sub-committee. These are important contributions, as any community informed of its past is, arguably, likely to be better equipped to build a solid foundation for the future. On an even more pressing practical level there has been some concern expressed over the years about the perilous condition of the footpath behind the Main Street. Walkers coming into the village, local folk with buggies, people with mobility problems amongst others have often had to abandon the footpath and take to the road to avoid this hazard. With money being scarce it’s been looking like progress in improving the situation would be slow. ATTAG however took the initiative and approached our local councillors asking for pledges of funding to make improvements possible. As a result €13,500 in total has been guaranteed by four of our elected representatives, Seamus Cosaí Fitzgerald, Michael Cahill, Patrick Connor and Johnny Healy Rae with possibly more pledges to come, in order to enable the needed work to be carried out. ATTAG also lent support to the cross-community project involving the GAA Sports Centre, Naoinre and Scoil Bhreac Chluain. This project arose from issues raised by Thomas Ashe at the Pride of Place meeting with Kerry County Council. The result has seen the laying of an access road and badly needed off-road car parking area around this busy part of the village.

The Kerry Coast Tony O’Callaghan ‘The Kerry Coast invites the reader to stroll along the seaboard, to taste life at the water’s edge, to embrace the richness and diversity of traditional maritime values that characterise people living near the ocean. Monuments, lighthouses, coastguard stations are both physical embodiments of a turbulent history and a reminder of the deep vein of culture that has shaped coastal dwellers. Kerry native Tony O’Callaghan’s observations on contemporary social life are presented in a thoughtprovoking and reflective narrative. The Kerry Coast is an exploration of a treasured heritage, sprinkled with anecdotes and coloured with personalities that have influenced those living by the sea.’- An Foilsitheoir

WEDNESDAY 15th March 12th April

So, ATTAG looks forward to the spring and summer. Local support when put together with the links which are being forged and welded with a spirit of co-operation , bode well for the future. Speaking of which, do keep an eye out for the starting date of the volunteer tidyup evenings yet another crucial endeavour that adds polish to the village and showcases our pride of place.'

CAO Late Application Question The closing date for applying to college was 1 February. Can I still apply? Answer You apply for almost all full-time undergraduate courses through the Central Applications Office (CAO). This includes, for example, university and institute of technology undergraduate courses such as Higher Certificates at Level 6 and degrees at Levels 7 and 8.

21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 lists all The CAO provides a handbook that the courses on offer and gives information on how to apply.

Project4:Layout 1

Decisions on offers of places are normally made in August and September, after the results of the Leaving Certificate have come out. A detailed schedule of the offer rounds is in the CAO handbook.

It is important to note that there is no central applications body for Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses. Students must apply directly to the individual colleges. You should check the closing date for PLC courses with the college where the PLC course is taking place. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

The closing date for 2017 CAO applications was 1 February 2017. However, late applications are allowed up to 5.15pm on 1 May 2017. There is a fee to apply for courses through the CAO and late applications are subject to an increased fee. Late online applications cost €50. You may change the courses you picked or the order of courses on your application. This Change of Mind facility is free. It opens on 5 May and closes on 1 July 2017 at 5:15pm. If you are a mature applicant who wants to be assessed on mature grounds, or if you want to be considered for the HEAR and/or DARE schemes, most colleges will require you to have applied to the CAO by 1 February 2017. There are also some restricted courses which cannot be applied for after 1 February 2017.
