Féile Na Bealtaine 2017

Knave Of Trumps Book Launch

Tá an samhradh ag teacht! It's time again to paint the town Féile and welcome in another glorious summer. Don't worry about the cold week just past, the weekend is now hotting up, and we are in for a fast and furious 5 days of Féile! Is é seo an 23ú bliain ar an bhfód agus é fós ag dul i bhfeabhas. Buaicphointe na féile imbliana ná an Mozart Requiem ar Oiche Bealtaine - Domhnach 7pm. The Requiem is a rare chance to experience this masterpiece in full orchestral glory, with 3 choirs converging on St Mary's Church. Fr Begley and the parish have been very kind in welcoming this wonderful celebration into St Mary's Church. Tickets will not be sold on the door, so we advise you to buy your tickets from our office beforehand (or online at www.feilenabealtaine.ie). Ceiliurfimid Oíche Bealtaine tar éis an Requiem i suíomh rúnda le aghaidheanna fidil, ceol, agus deasghnátha na Bealtaine. Note that the straw-workshop for Oiche Bealtaine is on Friday 2pm to 5pm, for those wishing to make costumes - (calender in the programme shows incorrect day). Ní féidir cur síos a dhéanamh ar gach rud anseo, so faigh cupán té agus suigh síos leis an gclár.

Local historian Pat Neligan will launch his book The Knave of Trumps: The Life and Times of Count James Louis Rice of Dingle on Sunday 30th April at 5pm in Benner’s Hotel, Dingle.

But here's a few gems: Transition Towns have a powerful exhibition on waste in the old Craft co-op on Goat street, and Jeremy Irons is to present his powerful film, Trashed in the Diseart on Monday. Sacred Heart University are showing a very high calibre selection of films on Saturday at noon. There is an amazing line-up for kids, including a Kila concert just for kids in the Skellig hotel after the parade. Beidh Pupéidí mar théama againn don mhórshúil agus beag agus mór ó gach paróíste sa leithinis páirteach ann. Kolga is a cutting edge theatre production from Finnish Theatre company and it's only performances in Ireland this year will be at Feile na Bealtaine. So it's also one not to miss. Multi-award winning novelist Sebastian Barry leads a stellar lineup of writers, while many spoken word events , offer welcome balance to the hectic festival schedule. This is the most packed programme ever, with over 120 events CEOL, DRAMA, LITRIOCHT, GREANN, EALAÍON, SCANNÁIN, SCÉALAÍOCHT, RINNCE, CIUNAS agus CRAIC. Buail isteach ar an oifig in ORCHARD LANE, agus beimid fíor buíoch as aon chabhar - Volunteers to help with doors of events are very much appreciated. Please drop into our office on Orchard Lane.

In 1792 a small band of Irish émigrés, led by Rice, launched one of the most daring rescue plans in history –to free Queen Marie Antoinette from the Temple prison in Paris and bring her to safety in Dingle. The book explores the facts behind the rescue attempt and the extraordinary life of Count Rice. Like many Irish men and women of his era, Rice sought his fortune on the continent. After graduating from the Irish college in Louvain, he enlisted as an Austrian hussar and joined that close-knit community of Irish émigrés who distinguished themselves in countries throughout Europe during the eighteenth century. Count Rice mingled with the greatest and most privileged aristocrats of the day, including the Holy Roman Emperor himself, Joseph II. But there was a more audacious, perhaps darker, side to Count Rice’s life. He would become famous – or infamous – as a duellist, an entrepreneur, a gambler, a controversial figure in an age of upheaval. “All countries where Count Rice will go,” a contemporary remarked, “should fear for their tranquillity …” The story takes readers from the world where James Louis Rice grew up to the heart of French royal circles, from the glittering playgrounds of the aristocracy to the bloodstained cobblestained of the Place de la Révolution. The Knave of Trumps casts new light on the celebrated Count James Louis Rice, and reveals the man behind the legend. Pat Neligan taught history to a generation of secondary school students in his native Dingle. In 2002 he took an MA in Local History Studies at UCC. He is currently working on other local history topics from the 18th and nineteenth centuries.

10 Years Of The Dingle Bookshop Bealtaine this year marks our tenth anniversary as owners of the bookshop. Good bookshops, like good parties, are made by the people who go to them. So it’s you we have to thank for not only keeping us going but enabling us to thrive. We thank you all, but not before we thank our wonderful staff without whom we could not have done it at all. Laura retired as manager just after Christmas; Aideen is doing a wonderful job as her replacement, and, with the help of our new assistant Molly, bringing a fresh look to the shop. We are taking more of a back seat these days (and if anyone should make us an offer we can't refuse we're proud to think that the shop is now well enough established to keep its special character without us altogether!). We have more things than ever going on in the shop during this year’s Féile. The remarkable immunologist Luke O Neill poses the question Will we Cure all Diseases? in conversation with Muireann Kelliher (Thursday 6 pm). On Friday at 6 pm you can meet two of the new generation of Irish novelists who have made news with their debuts: Jess Kidd and Rory Gleeson. Fans of the Darkmouth series will be very welcome to say hi to Shane Hegarty (Saturday 1 pm). Of special interest to poets will be Jessie Glendennie of Salmon Poetry talking about her twenty years of publishing with Dairena Ní Chinnéíde (Sunday 1.30); and anyone with an interest in the Irish language won’t want to miss Michael McCaughan on Ireland’s complicated relationship with it. His new book is Coming Home: One Man’s Return to the Irish Language (Monday 12 pm). On Sunday at 6 something a little different: Lifetimes with Brian McGuire and Colm Jones - two auld fellers on a sofa with an unusual blend of narrative and song tracing the arc of life. Puppets tell a lovely story of the Tears of a Selkie in the able hands of Susa Ahrens (Monday 2 pm - perfect entertainment for anyone over 3). And in amongst, to celebrate our tenth anniversary we are presenting pop-up performances of Mike Venner’s hilarious play Bookworms, whose production by Beehive Theatre at the Dublin Fringe was described as ‘A kind of Beckettian Scrabble’. Kids will love that too. (It only lasts ten minutes.) Times of performance will be on our website or just look in the window….

Nematodirus Forecast For 2017 Nematodirosis is a severe disease of lambs six to twelve weeks of age, which become infected through ingesting large numbers of infective larvae present on contaminated pasture. The life cycle of Nematodirus battus is unlike that of other roundworms in that, typically it takes almost a year before the egg hatches releasing the infective larvae. There is a mass hatching of larvae in spring when the soil temperature increases after a period of cold weather and disease typically occurs in April, May and June. Infection is characterised by profuse diarrhoea, dehydration and weight loss. Mortality can be high in untreated lambs. After ingestion, Nematodirus larvae invade the intestinal mucosa and in some cases death may occur even before clinical signs of diarrhoea are observed. Ewes are not affected. This disease is best prevented by keeping the current year’s lambs off pasture that was grazed by lambs or young calves in the previous year. When is disease predicted to occur this year and when to treat? The peak hatching of these larvae is predicted to be the last week of March along the south coast of Ireland, and into the first week of April for most of the rest of the country. Nationally soil temperatures are warmer than normal for this time of year leading to maximum larval hatching occurring 1-2 weeks earlier than in recent years. Lambs may show clinical signs of infection two to three weeks from these dates of peak hatching. Along the south coast of the country, lambs should be dosed with a suitable anthelmintic by the second week of April (two weeks post peak larval hatching), while lambs in the rest of the country should be dosed from mid April depending on farm location and individual flock factors. This will help to decrease the risk of clinical disease and reduce pasture contamination for the next year. Early lambing flocks and enterprises with higher stocking rates, where lambs are grazing pastures grazed by last year’s lambs, are particularly vulnerable. Twin lambs may be at risk of developing disease earlier compared to their single lamb counterparts as they begin grazing greater amounts of grass earlier in life. As environmental conditions will vary from farm to farm, it is important that veterinary advice should be sought in the event of clinical cases or for a flock control program comprising specific measures for any intensive sheep flock. It is recommended that any lambs that die unexpectedly are referred by your vet to a regional veterinary laboratory for post-mortem examination as Nematodirus battus can cause death even before clinical signs become apparent. It is important to note that most of the pathogenic effects of this parasite are caused by the larval stages. As a result of this, and coupled with the fact that this worm is a poor egg producer, you should not rely on the use of faecal egg count monitoring as a sole guide for treatment. Treatment Choice Benzimidazoles (white drenches) remain the treatment of choice and are effective against both larval and adult stages of this worm. The use of benzimidazoles as a first choice treatment option will also help to limit the exposure of the other anthelmintic classes to worms such as Teladorsagia and Trichostrongylus at a point in the grazing season when treatment for these may not be particular warranted. This will help to preserve their efficacy and is especially important on farms where resistance to benzimidazoles occurs. There are currently no drenches with effective residual activity against Nematodirus which means that as the lamb continues to graze it can become re-infected with larvae again and as a result may need repeated treatments at two to three week intervals. Nematodirus infections can resemble coccidiosis in lambs It is also important that farmers are aware that other parasites can cause diarrhoea in young lambs and require different control measures and medication. Nematodirus can be wrongly assumed to be the cause of severe diarrhoea in lambs when in fact the cause is a coccidial infection. Rotation of pasture and frequent movement of feeding troughs and watering points to drier areas will help prevent coccidiosis in young lambs as localised poaching creates moist conditions suitable for the spread of this parasite. diarrhoea and straining are observed. This is especially the case where there has been little or no response to an initial anthelmintic (wormer) treatment. Both nematodirosis and coccidiosis can occur at the same time in the same lambs, so treatment may need to be directed at both pathogens. Beef Data And Genomics Programme Reopened. Minister Michael Creed TD has announced the re-opening of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP). This will make the scheme available to beef suckler farmers who are not already members of the scheme. The scheme will be known as BDGP II and will, like the original, commit to six years of payments to farmers for completion of actions aimed at delivering accelerated genetic improvement in the national herd and improvement of its environmental sustainability. The scheme is now open for applications with a closing date of Monday 8th May 2017, and further details on the application process can be got by contacting the Department’s offices in Portlaoise onbeefschemes@ agriculture.gov.ie or 076 1064423. Payments to participants will be the same as BDGPI i.e. €142.50 per hectare for the first 6.66 payable hectares under the scheme, and €120 per payable hectare after that, with the same timing requirements for returning of data in order to ensure payments can go out to as many farmers as possible in December of each scheme year. New Hen Harrier Scheme Underway Minister Michael Creed has announced that work on the roll-out of the new locally-led Hen Harrier scheme will begin immediately. The Minister confirmed that his Department had signed contracts with the Hen Harrier Project Ltd, representing a consortium of skilled and experienced conservationists, agricultural advisors and environmental scientists, to lead on the design and delivery of the new scheme. The winning team was selected on foot of a competitive tender operated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine as offering the best approach for this critical new scheme which seeks to save one of Ireland’s most endangered birds. The new Hen Harrier team is led by Fergal Monaghan, an experienced farm advisor, working alongside the Golden Eagle Trust, with Brendan O’Gorman Accountants providing financial management inputs. This new approach is being introduced as a pilot project under the European Innovation Partnership measure which forms part of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme. It aims to bring farmers, farm advisors, a conservation NGO and researchers together to deliver a targeted landscape level intervention which places the farmer at the heart of the process. Creating sustainable farming systems that work for both the farmers and the bird, and deliver real socio-economic benefits to the areas concerned, is a key objective. Nettles - A Springtime Tonic For The Weary! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

tle tea is the best way to benefit from the diuretic and detoxifying properties of the plant. The tea can be prepared through soaking the fresh or dried leaves in boiled water. This method allows the retention of active substances. The steam of tea is good for the respiratory system and skin so before drinking the tea, you can have a mini-facial by covering your head with a towel and placing your face over the pot or bowl of steaming nettles. Once cooled a little, drink the tea. The soaked leaves can be used as a compress for inflammed and painful joints. Nothing is wasted! A nettle infusion is often used to wash the scalp to regenerate, grow and thicken hair. An infusion is made by boiling 60g of crushed nettle leaves in 2½ cups of water. Cover the pot for 10 minutes, strain and use the nettle water when rinsing your hair. Nettle juice is best for delivering the blood and heart benefits of the plant. Gather both leaves and stems and put into juicer. Strain the paste through a fine sieve or muslin and keep refrigerated in dark bottles until use. For hypertension drink a half glass before meals. For anemia, drink 1-2 glasses daily. For kidney and bladder strength, drink one glass on waking.

Young nettle shoots are sprouting up along our hedges, behind ditches, in the garden - just about everywhere right about now. The use of the stinging nettles (urtica dioca) as a remedy has been well documented in Irish folk medicine and further afield, for centuries. Apparently, the stinging nettle was first introduced here by Caesar’s soldiers on their march across Britain. The cooler climate and long miles wreaked havoc on their bare legs, so at the end of the day, they would gather great bunches of nettles and beat each other with them thereby warming and soothing their weary limbs. In hindsight, it would have been much less painful for them to ditch the skirts and wear a pair of trousers! However, we must be thankful to them as the stinging nettle has proved to be a wonderful springtime remedy and has a long tradition in treating ailments such as urinary tract disease, kidney dysfunction, arthritis, gout, hypertension, respiratory problems, skin disorders, hair loss, asthma and anemia (to name a few). The young shoots are a rich source of vitamins and minerals - such as vitamins C, E, betacarotene, K and minerals such as iron, magnesium, silica and calcium. They have a stimulating action on the kidney, bladder and urinary system. When eaten in Spring, they help to clean the body of toxins, built up over the winter. They improve the excretion of uric acid thereby reducing the symptoms of gout and arthritis. Their anti-inflammatory compounds joined with minerals such as silicon and boron help ease the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis while reducing inflammation in the joints and tendons Stinging nettle contains natural antihistamines and anti-inflammatories (including quercetin), that can dilate constricted bronchial and nasal passages. There is good evidence to support the use of nettles for hay fever symptoms and allergies affecting the nose and sinuses, once you are not allergic to nettles, of course! The nettles have also been used to treat hypertension by regulating arterial pressure and strengthening blood vessels. They are used to treat anaemia due to their iron content and rich in vitamin K to help regulate blood coagulation. Not a bad list of health benefits from a plant that is often despised and considered a nuisance in the garden!

The nettle is robust and versatile and can also be used in cooking by adding it to soups or steamed with spinach for a fortifying side dish. So, next time you get stung by a nettle, do not curse the plant but rejoice and be grateful for the many great health benefits it imparts and let the sting be a reminder that you need to put this powerful plant on your Springtime menu! The nettle provides an excellent source of silicon which is used in the body as silica – an important mineral to strengthen the matrix in which bone is laid down. Working closely with collagen, silica provides strength to bones, skin, hair and nails. The best time to harvest young nettle shoots and to reap their benefits is anytime from when they first appear until they go to seed. The young nettle tops are ripe for picking right now. However, the root is also used later in the year and can be dried and ground to a fine powder. Young nettle leaves and stems are used to make tea, infusions, juices and soups. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon

Monday, April 13, 1987.

Up at 4.15 this morning and headed for Shannon airport. Driving was hazardous because of thick fog but this cleared by Gleann na Gealt. Arrived airport at 6.50 and collected three relations from California. They had two trolleys of luggage - don’t know how it all fitted but it did! Home by 9.45. Archbishop McNamara was buried in the crypt of the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin this afternoon.

Tuesday, April 14.

It’s 75 years since the passenger liner Titanic struck an iceberg in the north Atlantic while heading to New York on her maiden voyage. She stayed afloat into the early hours of April 15 before sinking with the loss of over 1500 souls. Her wreck was discovered two years ago by Robert Ballard.

Wednesday, April 15.

Kids home from school early because of the Easter hols. Strange story from America this week where a man on trial for suspected drug dealing detonated a bomb in his briefcase in the courtroom killing himself and injuring others including his lawyer.

Thursday, April 16.

A beautiful day - sun from morning till late evening and temperature at 15/16 C. The daffodils are still in bloom and the tulips coming to bloom.

Saturday, April 18.

Rain and windy early but cleared by afternoon. Never saw Dingle so crowded with visitors at Easter before. Tomás Garvey told me the spending was better than at Christmas.

Sunday, April 19.

Went to Mass - in the sacristy for the first time and took up a plate collection for the schools during the Offertory. Roast Turkey for lunch. Broadcaster Vincent Hanley died yesterday aged 33 but no details on the cause of death in the papers today but rumours point to AIDS. There was a story recently that AIDS sufferers were being euthanised in Holland and the Dutch are worried that they will have a surge of AIDS victims from other countries seeking the same exit from life. A very strange man came to the door tonight looking for ‘Paud Sheehy, the rally organiser’ but we couldn’t enlighten him.

Tuesday, April 21.

Neo-Nazis in Germany are campaigning to have the war Diary of Anne Frank declared a hoax. Around 100 dead and 300 injured in Sri Lanka after a car bomb explode in Colombo’s central bus depot.

Thursday, April 23.

Got copy of 25” map of the townland from the area engineer John Ashe who will be retiring next month. The map will help draw up plans for a workshop before submitting to the council. We all went to the spud field after dinner, down near the bog, and got stuck in to digging and setting - Kerrs pinks, Golden wonders and Pentland dells - then earthed them up.

Friday, April 24.

A fine hazy sunny day with warm breeze from the east and high pressure over Europe. 14 West Kerry Live

Tom Fitzgerald has been elected to the Senate and Charlie Haughey has nominated Professor George Eogan to the same office.

Saturday, April 25.

Another fine long, hazy sunny day with light easterly breeze - we can hear the sound of the sea coming across the cliffs and fields from Doonshean strand which is usually a good sign of the weather. Set the last of the spuds this afternoon. Rang Jimmy Deenihan T.D. about the National Monuments Bill but he’s away till tomorrow.

Sunday, April 26.

Heat haze up to lunchtime then cleared to hazy sunshine for the rest of the day. Back to the Convent Hall after lunch and presented trophies and medals to the youngsters for games held during the week. The credit for organising the games goes to Oliver Phaer.

Monday, April 27.

Thick fog and some drizzle today. Put up a sign at the gate seeking planning permission for the new workshop then headed to Limerick for a week’s work experience. There’s a report in the New York Times today about the level of emigration of young people from Ireland to the States which is being described as a disaster. The gardaí had to dispense a few belts during crowd trouble at the FAI cup final when Shamrock Rovers beat Dundalk at Dalymount.

Thursday, April 30.

Some rain during the night but stayed fairly dry until the afternoon. Bought some comics and sweets for the kids. Packed up at five and just made it to the car in Jury’s car park before it began to lash and lash it did - all the way from Limerick to Dingle. The Americans have barred Kurt Waldheim from entering the US. What a comedown for the former Secretary General of the UN and now president of Austria. It’s all the result of stories about him as an intelligence officer with the German army during the war.

Omelette Arnold Bennett Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

small bunch of chopped parsley Method Put the milk and the cream in a small pot along with the onion, bay leaf, peppercorns and a little nutmeg. Bring this to a simmer, and then turn off the heat and allow to infuse for 30 minutes. Once it has infused, strain into a clean pot. Put it back on the heat and let it come to a simmer. Add the smoked fish. Turn the heat down to a very gentle simmer. Allow about 6-8 minutes for the smoked fish to cook. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fish from the pot - keeping the liquid. At this stage, the fish should flake easily.

Another bank holiday weekend, a great reason to have a lazy brunch on any one of the mornings over the weekend. This is a dish which is rich but will quickly become a favourite. It is a classical dish, allegedly created in the Savoy Hotel in London for Arnold Bennett, who was a famous writer. So there! Make sure to throw that into conversation when you are serving it. I have used an aged cheddar for this recipe, I would suggest seeking out some Coolattin or Hegartys cheddar - two excellent Irish farmhouse cheddars. If you like the idea of cooking brunch why not join us at the Cookery School on Sunday 14th May for our Sunday Morning Brunch hands on class. This is just one of the recipes that we will be cooking. We promise to liven up your Sunday mornings!!! Ingredients 200ml milk

Melt most of the butter in a small pan over a low heat, then whisk in the flour. Cook this gently for a minute or two, then gradually whisk in the fish poaching liquid and cook until it thickens. Cook this for a further 10 minutes. By now the mixture should have be nice and thick and should taste great. Whisk the eggs and the yolks with a spoon of crème fraîche and carefully whisk in the thickened poaching liquid. Heat a small omelette pan, add the remaining butter along with the mixture of the eggs and poaching liquid. Turn the heat down to a low-medium heat under the pan. Add in the fish and a little white pepper (remember the fish will have enough salt in it). Carefully move this around in the pan with a fork. Let it cook for about 4 minutes or so until the omelette is still a little loose in the centre. Add the grated cheese to the top of the omelette. At this stage put it under a heated grill for about 2 minutes to allow the cheese to melt. Remove from the grill, add some parsley and serve immediately. Enjoy!!!!

100ml cream 1 shallot onion, sliced finely 1 bay leaf ½ tsp. white peppercorns nutmeg 200g smoked haddock (naturally smoked!) 30g butter 20g flour 3 eggs, plus 2 yolks 1 tbsp. crème fraîche 60g aged cheddar, finely grated

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams Féile. We wish to extend a Céad Míle Fáilte to all our visitors who come among us this weekend for the annual Féile Na Bealtaine a small festival which has grown into a huge attraction featuring national and international talent of the highest quality. The full 5 day programme of rich culture, art, music, chat, parades and dawn to dusk entertainment is featured in this edition. Ticket sales are reported to be brisk at the Festival Office in Orchard Lane so if you want to be sure of getting entry to any of the events get your tickets sorted as soon as possible. Dingle Hub. The official opening of the Dingle HUB in Cooleen will take place on this Friday morning at 9a.m.The facility offers access to 1GB of Eir Fibre Broadband together with dedicated telephone landline service with 24/7 access to registered participants be it individuals, groups or companies of any size. The fees are very reasonable thanks to the generosity of EIR who have provided this extra fast broadband service to Dingle at a time when it is really badly needed. Many more back up services are also available to intending participants including a Hot Desk, Dedicated Desk, Private Office, with long term and short term fees applying in all cases. Lets hope further long term employment in this area will accrue from this most modern of facilities which helps keep Dingle up with the fast changing technological world we live in today. Walk. The third Annual Dingle Darkness Into Light Walk will start from the Marina Centre at 4.15a.m. on Saturday May 6th and registration can be completed on line or at Strawberry Beds in Green Street between 3 and 5p.m. on Friday 28th or Saturday 29th. This is a wonderful opportunity to help raise funds for a very deserving cause and the 5km Slí Na Sláinte route is a most interesting challenge to witness daybreak over Dingle Harbour, a real darkness into light treat indeed. Tidy Towns. The work evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. We earnestly appeal for more help as the weeds growth have really taken off and the indiscriminate disposal of rubbish particularly along the quieter roads is very noticeable recently. So please get involved and do your bit for your local community its healthy, enjoyable and rewarding. High Vis Vests. The huge increase in Walking/Cycling activity on our roads together with the seasonal increases in vehicular numbers certainly increase the dangers for all who regularly use the public thoroughfare. The use of High Vis Vests by walkers and cyclists is a great help to drivers to identify and take appropriate action when approaching individuals or groups on the road both by day and by night also.Safety responsibility rests with all road users so please take care and help avoid accidents by preparing before you embark on the public road and of course this includes driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Awards. Belated congratulations to all those who were nominated for the recent West Kerry People Of The Year Awards. The huge volume of entries shows the respect and appreciation the public have for the efforts of others and all nominees were deserving of commendation for their efforts spread among the different categories involved in the Awards Process. Well done to Mike O’Shea and his team in organising this appreciation of the volunteers in our community.

Nósanna na Bealtaine Billy Mag Fhloinn B’í Bealtaine ceann des na mórfhéilte i bhféilire ársa na nGael, am athraithe is claochlaithe. Le luí na gréine ar oíche Bhealtaine, agus an lá ar fad ina dhiaidh, bhí cuma neamhshaolta le braistint ar cois. Seo an oíche ar a chríochnaíonn an geimhreadh, ar tí an tsamhraidh, is a theas, solas is beatha nua.

na tine le gach raic is rangás. Ag Féile na Bealtaine i mbliana, cuirimid fáilte romhaibh a bheith páirteach sa searmanas tine. Beidh na sluaite ag bailiú le chéile lasmuigh de Dick Mack's ar a 8pm. Cuirfear fáilte roimh éinne gur mhaith leo a n-aghaidh fidil féin a dhéanamh teacht go ceardlann i gCurrans ar an Aoine, 28ú ag 2pm. Tabharfaimid féin an samhradh linn.

Folklore also reveals the importance of Bealtaine. It was clearly a time of magic, and people were wary that neighbours could place piseoga on each other at this transitional time. They used to sprinkle well water on the boundaries of their land to counter any hexes or threats, and would guard the doorways of their houses by decorating them with flowers and green leaves. People feared shapeshifting witches and fairies at this time, and many counterspells and other forms of protection were done to ward off malign influences from both neighbours and the Good People.

Bealtaine Customs

Tháinig na Tuatha Dé Danann go hÉirinn don gcéad uair ar an mBealtaine, ag teacht anuas ón spéir ina loingeas eiteogach, ag tabhairt draíochta is saineolas geintlíochta leo. Deirtear i gcáipéisí meánaoiseacha gur lasadh na draóithe dhá thine Bhealtaine, is thiomáintí ba eadarthu chun iad a bheannú is a choimeád slán le linn an tsamhraidh. Lean an nós seo ar aghdaigh go dtí le déanaí, agus choimeád feirmeoirí na háite na tréada i mbanraigh i dtreo deireadh Mí Aibreáin chun iad a thiomáint idir na tinte in aice le Trá na Muirígh maidin Lae Bealtaine. Tá tábhacht na féile le feiscint sa bhéaloideas leis. B'am piseógachta is dríochta é, agus is minic go raibh daoine in amhras ar a gcomharsain ag an am tairseachúil seo. Chuirtí uisce an tobair ar theorann na feirme chun cosc a chur ar dhrochorthaí. agus chuirtí bláthanna is duilleoga glasa ar leic an dorais is na fuinneoige chun sprideanna, púcaí is donas a choimeád amach. Is minic a chloisfear scéal faoi chailleach ilchruthach, a bhí ag goid bainne na mbó i bhfoirm ghiorria, agus bhí briochtaí is orthaí aige daoine chun síoga is comharsana drochaigeantachta a stopadh. Ach ní cúis eagla amháin í An Bhealtaine. Bhí dóchas is áthas ar dhaoine le teacht an tsamhraidh, agus nídís a n-aghaidheanna i ndrúcht na maidine an lá san chun a háilleacht is óige a choimeád. Tá ana chuid cúntas ina léiríonn céiliúradh, cóisirí is meidhir ag an am seo. In áiteanna áirithe timpeall na tíre, bhíodh daoine cosúil le dreoilíní nó cleamairí gléasta i bhfeistis tuí nó craicinne, ag caitheamh aghaidheanna fidil scanrúla, ag rince timpeall

e Beauty

Bealtaine was not all about suspicion and fear, however. People welcomed the coming summer, and would wash their faces in the May morning dew to keep themselves looking young and beautiful There are many accounts of celebrations, bonfires, and merriment at this time. In several places around Ireland, people used to observe Bealtaine by dressing up in costumes of straw, rags and skins, and there are accounts of mummer- and dreoilíntype characters wearing frightening masks of animal skin and goat hair, who would recite rhymes and songs, dance around, and make mischief and fun. Bealtaine was one of the major festivals of the ancient Irish calendar, and represents a time of transition and transformation. After sundown on May eve, and all the following day, there was a sense of otherworldliness and change in the air. This was the night when the dark half of the year ended, and summer was imminent, bringing light, warmth and new life.

air in sky ships, bringing with them magic and druidic learning. Early medieval sources speak of how the druids would light two fires on the eve of Bealtaine, and drive cattle between them for protection and blessing in the coming season. This tradition continued until recent times, farmers used corral their cattle in the last few days of April to drive them between the Bealtaine fires near Muiríoch until well into the 20th century.

Mná na hOlna Mossie Ó Scannláin Bhuel, táimíd anseo le chéile arís. Is tapaidh a imíonn na laethanta. Ní haon mhaitheas a bheith ag comhaireamh, is dócha, ach bainimís sup astu an fhaid atáimid ábalta. Is í Una Ní Shé a chuir ag caint an babhta seo mé. Tá sí ag maireachtaint i Lios Póil le timpeall deich mbliana. Anuas ó Chorcaigh a tháinig sí chughainn. Bean dheas ghálánta mhacánta, bail ó Dhia uirthi. Ag caint ar ollann a bhíomair, bhíos thuas sa tigh léi. Íosa Críost na bhFlaitheas ná bí ag caint ar ealaíontóireacht. Ní fhaca riamh a leithéid d’éadach, áraistí agus giúirléidi a bhí déanta d’ollann. Nuair a bhí sí ag caint agus ag taispeáint dom, bhíos ag cuimhneamh ar m’athair agus an chomáint, an útamáil agus an obair a bhí ag baint le bheith á mbearradh. Ní dóigh liom go raibh riamh níos mó ná ceithre fichid caora aige ach ladhar maith caorach ab ea é sin don am san, mar ní raibh faic acu ach an cnoc chun iad féin a choiméad ina mbeathaigh agus chaitheadar a bheith gníomhach. Ní raibh aon nuts ná sadhlas ná féar leasaithe le fáil acusan, ach ‘Seo libh anois anáirde ar an gcnoc i measc na gcloch agus deiníg bhúr ndícheall’. Ní raibh aon tslí thíos ins na goirt acu, mar bhí ba is gamhna, prátaí, coirce is féar á dtógaint amach as an gcúpla gort san agus gan faic le spáráil acu, mar fé mar a dúrt, ní raibh an leasú ann, ach cúpla ualach aoiligh ón mbuaile agus ábhairín beag sleaig anois is arís. Ach pé scéal é, bailíodh na caoirigh chun bearradh. Bheadh Tom éirithe amach aisti go luath ar maidin agus cúpla canta aráin caite go dtí an ngadhar aige agus thógadh sé misneach do láimh a chur amach triall orthu. Táimse ag rá leat nach raibh aon Pedigree Chum ann dosna gadhair an uair sin! An baile suas. Bheadh duine againn leis. Na comharsain isteach ‘s amach as a mbotháin féin. ‘Sea Tom. Ná brea an uain í, thánn tú ag imeacht a’ bearradh’. ‘Táim. Tá sé in am’. Away linn, barra na n-árd suas, isteach trí gheata na nÁnthanta, suas i dtreo am Choma Bhig. An gadhar ag tosnú ag obair ansan. “Bring em on, go wide, luigh, luigh is fán fada ort mar ghadhar. Come out, come out, heel up here”. An gadhar chomh scaipthe leis na caoirigh, ná feadar cá ngeobham. Deinim amach go raibh fhios ag na caoirigh go léir go raibh Tom agus Sailor ar a dtóir agus bhídis ag rith anuas go Macha na nÁirí agus na haon chaora eile chomh maith leo! Anuas leo, isteach ins na clocháin. Caithfear iad a scaradh. Scaoil léi sin agus í seo, ní linn iad. Ár gcuid fhéin againn sa deireadh. Seo linn. Bun an Choir amach , an claí geal, na Collaithe, go ceann an bhóthair. Away linn an bóthar amach, iad ag socrú síos ábhairín beag le traochadh, sailor ansúd ag fanacht le orders on gcommander. An baile síos. Ba dheas an radharc é. Gadhair na gcómharsan tugtha isteach agus ceangailte. Ag casadh isteach sa bhuaile tráthnona déanach, isteach ins na botháin. An t-ocras ár n-ithe, sinn fhéin san áireamh. Suite chun boird. Gan éinne ag caint. Ceann muice, cabáiste is prátaí. Ni raibh aon back packs le packed lunches, walking poles, ná bróga ó North Face an uair sin againn , táim a rá leat! Lá arna mháireach ní chloisfeá faic ach an clic clac ag an ndís ó thigh na mba, m’athair ansiúd ar a leathghlúin le muiriltí anáirde, ceann de na caoirigh féna ascaill aige agus bosca Saxa Salt leataobh leis nuair a bhaineadh an dís sceilp as an gcraiceann, chimlítí an salann do. Nuair a bhíodh timpeall deich gcinn bearrtha aige scaoileadh sé amach sa ghort iad. Bheidís ag rith timpeall a d’iarraidh greim féir a fháil, cuma ait orthu, na rudaí bochta, iad bearrtha agus gearrtha, cá bhfuilimid, cad a thárla? N’fheadarsa in aon chor cad é an praghas a bhí ar ollann an uair sin ach is cuimhin liom go dtána bean isteach sa pharóiste go dtugtaí Mrs. Swift uirthi agus gheall sí scilling níos mó ná aon cheannathóir eile ar ollann. Bhuel, ní fhaca riamh a leithéid do chraos. Ní mór na go mbearradh Sailor bocht é fhéin agus bhí triúr déag againne ann, ach fágadh orainn é , ní raibh puinn orainn! Fuaireamair ordaithe na haon phóirse ins na botháin agus clathacha a chuardach agus dá mbeadh faic inár ndiaidh go ngeobhaimís a bheith againn. Is minic a bhearrtaí caora amháin an uair sin dá mbeadh sí le marú nó dá mbeadh sí ar easnamh le linn am bearrtha. Ach anois, bhuel tá athrú mór tagtha ar shaol na gcaorach agus saol na holla agus má theastaíonn ó éinne agaibh a fháil amach cad iad na hathruithe, an dul chun cinn agus na hiontaisí atá a ndéanamh le hollann inniu , bhuel tagaíg 26 West Kerry Live

an Daingean le linn Féile na Bealtaine agus buailfidh sibh le Leiko Uchiyama. Ar nós na gcaorach fhéin beidh an galar cam oraibh ag féachaint morthimpeall oraibh fhéin ar an méid atá á dhéanamh aci le hollann. Seapánach is ea í seo, ansan a rugadh í ach tá cuid mhaith don ndomhan siúlta aici ar mhaithe lena ceird . Tá stáir mhór ama caite aici san Astráil, sa Nua-Shéalainn is a lán tíortha eile chomh maith leis an Eoraip. Bhí sí ansan i Lios Póil agus chuir sí aithne mhaith ar Sheán Ó Muircheartaigh atá i bhfeighil ar Chomharchumann na nUan anso. Dá gcífeá an chasóig álainn atá déanta aici as ollann Chiarraí. Casóig mhór fhada fhairsing go bhfuil slí do bheirt inti dá mbéarfaí ort. Ná bí ag caint ar stíl. Tugann sí an Kerry coat uirthi. Beidh sé ar taispeáint aici sa Daingean is dóigh liom. Tá sí curtha fúithi anois i gCeartharlach. Tá sé fiche bliain ó bhí sí sa Daingean. Beidh ceann dá píosaí le feiscint istigh i siopa Lizbeth Mulcahy agus gan dabht beidh ár mbean olna fhéin Úna Ní Shé in éineacht léi. Ar an méid atá feicthe agamsa déarfainn go mbeidh sé ana-shuimúil ar fad. Cífidh mé ann sibh le cúnamh Dé. Seo libh anois agus nár thaga meirg riamh ar lúndracha ár gcaradais.

Ifika Youika Launch The journey through the eye of a songster

Liam OʼNeill Art 1 The Colony, Strand Street, Dingle

Martin Hansard IFIKA YOUIKA is a book, a song, a voice, a smorgasbord of lyrical thought and an one-man show to boot. To Dingle with it’s particular energy and cultural resonance is where I came to write it. Tháinig mé go nDaingean Uí Chúis i rith Mí Eanáir 2016 chun mo leabhair a scríobh. Tá rud éigin an-speisalta faoi Chorca Dhuidhne, an tír ó Séipéillín Ghallarais, Cosán na Naomh, An t-Oileánach, na Gaelgóirí agus Fungi, fuair mé léargas, grinneas agus suaimhneas anseo. I've been writing songs ever since I can remember and now looking back, it seemed to be a way of documenting my life and relationship to place; Ireland. Impressionistic in style each song and poem is introduced with prose. The book is devided into five chapters, each of which are depicted by illustrations; hieroglyph-like in their simplicity and intent which gives the book an Art Nouveau look and feel.. Is Blea Cliath go smior mé, ach is Éireannach mé freisin, mar gheall sin, ceapaim go bhfuil sé róthábhachtach mo theanga a thuiscint agus a labhairt, caith mé mo dhualgas a dhéanamh maidir lena beatha an anama agus le mo shaol ealaíonta. Mar a dearfá 'fear gan teanga is fear gan cultúr'. Chúm mé cúig amhráin as Gaelige chun IFIKA YOUIKA a churadh. Casaim na h-amhráin sin i rith mo chur i látháir beo. Ifika Youika performed can be visceral: what life isn't! But the deeper subtext is its yearning for resolution. Book launch and performance in Bácús Café, Green Street, Dingle on Saturday 29th April @7pm. All Welcome. Seoladh leabair & cur i láthair sa Caife Bácús, Sráid an Doirín, Daingean Uí Chúis 29ú Aibreán @ seacht a chlog. Fáilte roimh chach.

Feile: The National Féile Peil na nÓg 2017 will be held in Monaghan, Cavan and Fermanagh while the Division 1 County Féile will be held in Sligo at the end of June. Kerry will have three qualifies for the National weekend. Kerry B, C and D. Kerry A will be in Sligo. Milltown Castlemaine's U.14's are in the B qualifiers. Last Week, Milltown Castlemaine hosted Group 2B of the Kerry Coiste na nÓg Féile Peil na nÓg qualifiers. Milltown Castlemaine played Na Gael in the first game. Na Gael had a very fast start with two goals in the first minute. Milltown Castlemaine rallied and as the game went into the second half they had levelled the match. However Na Gael lifted their game in the last few minutes to score three consecutive points to win on a score line of Na Gael 3.03 to Milltown Castlemaine 1.06. The second game was Na Gael v An Ghaeltacht. Na Gael qualified for the Div 2 Féile final as top seeds from this group with a controlled win. Na Gael led from pillar to post with again an early goal having them in control. An Ghaeltacht rallied but the speed of the breaking Na Gael forwards meant that Na Gael won on a score line of Na Gael 3.05 An Ghaeltacht 1.02. The final place in the Feile semi finals was to be decided by the last game of the evening. Milltown Castlemaine's very young defence set the platform for their teams win. Their forwards got the room in the second half to ensure that they qualified with a win on a score line of Milltown Castlemaine 2.03 An Ghaeltacht 0.04. Well done to the players of all three teams for some very entertaining and enjoyable football. Na Gael and Milltown Castlemaine qualify for the Division 2 semi finals. which will be held on Wednesday May 3rd. Times and venues to be confirmed. 50 year celebrations: Coiste Na nÓg Chiarrai are celebrating 50 years of Juvenile activity in both Football and Hurling in 2017 and as part of the celebrations they are compiling a history to acknowledge this. They are appealing to all clubs to supply photographs of teams and administrators over the period. All the material supplied will be acknowledged and scanned and returned to the owners. Limerick and the Irish Schools Regattas 2017 Congratulations to our Juniors ladies that have had a very successful weekend. The Limerick Regatta took place on Saturday, the 23rd of April, followed by the National Schools Championships on Sunday. Both events were run at O’Brien’s Bridge over a four-lane, 1,500 metres buoyed course. The first win of the weekend went to Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Griffin, Katie Boyle, Anna Tyther and Mara Treacy representing Killorglin Rowing Club at Limerick Regatta. The girls won the Women’s Junior 16 quad race with 12 competitors entered in this event and had a clean sweep at both the heat and the final. On Sunday, the Women’s Junior 16 quad crew of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Molly O’Grady, Anna Tyther and Alanna Dolan represented the Intermediate School Killorglin at the 12th Irish Schools Championships and won their race easily against two Laurel Hill and Leo’s of Carlow crews in the final. There were 16 Schools entered in the event on Sunday, with Laurel Hill claiming the overall victory as the best school at the Regatta. The Schools regatta attracted a record number of entries this year with almost 500 crews from over 70 schools across the country travelling to the event. The Schools Regatta started in 2006, and the Intermediate School Killorglin won the Victor Ludorum Trophy in 2007 and 2011 for the most successful school at the Regatta. Big thanks to Michael G Fleming for his continued hard work and dedication to prepare the girls for events and Fionan McCarthy for looking after the logistics and getting the boats to the Regatta. The Club and the athletes greatly appreciate it.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (Ankle/Heel/Foot pain)

Eddie O’Grady General Discussion Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a rare disorder caused by damage/compression of the tibial nerve or its branches, as it passes through the tarsal tunnel (entrapment neuropathy). The tarsal tunnel is a narrow passageway bound by bone and soft tissue that lies on the inside of the ankle. However, tarsal tunnel syndrome is a term often broadly applied to any pain along the tibial nerve, which can result from a multitude of causes. Individuals with tarsal tunnel syndrome may experience pain, burning, or a tingling sensation anywhere along the tibial nerve. Signs & Symptoms The specific symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome can vary. In some cases, symptoms develop suddenly, and in others gradually. Some affected individuals may experience a sharp, shooting pain along the tibial nerve. This nerve branches off from the sciatic nerve and runs down the lower leg to the ankle and then the foot. Pain can be severe enough to cause a person to limp. Affected individuals may describe a radiating pain that cannot be localized to one spot. In addition to or instead of pain, affected individuals may experience numbness of the affected area or a burning or tingling sensation, which is often described as similar to “pins and needles”. In some individuals, symptoms may affect one spot such as the inside of the ankle. In other individuals, symptoms can affect the ankle, heel and foot. For example, pain may radiate from the ankle down to the heel or even the foot, depending on which section of the nerve is affected. Less frequently, pain may radiate from the ankle up to the calf. The symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome are often worsened by activity such as prolonged standing or walking. Consequently, pain may worsen throughout the day. Symptoms are usually relieved by rest. However, as the disorder

progresses, there may also be pain at night when a person is trying to sleep. This is typical of neuropathies. Causes Tarsal tunnel syndrome can result from any condition that causes compression of the tibial nerve or its branches as it passes through the tarsal tunnel. These can include space-occupying lesions or masses, which may increase pressure in the tunnel. Such lesions include tumors consisting mainly of fat tissue (lipomas), tumors consisting of nerve fibers and ganglion cells (gangliomas) and tumors of the nerve sheath (schwannomas). Additional conditions that can cause tarsal tunnel syndrome include a benign bony growth in the tarsal tunnel (exostosis), enlarged (varicose) veins and inflammation of the synovial membrane (proliferative synovitis). Certain injuries or trauma such as an ankle sprain, fracture or valgus foot deformity may cause inflammation and swelling that can lead to tarsal tunnel syndrome. Also, certain disorders such as diabetes and arthritis can also cause inflammation and swelling that can lead to tarsal tunnel syndrome. Individuals who have severely flat feet (pes planus) are at a greater risk of developing tarsal tunnel syndrome than the general population because the flattened “fallen” arches can stretch the tibial nerve.

treatment includes rest, contrast baths, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and non-rigid orthotics which also can restore and support the natural arch of the foot. In some cases, changing to looser can relieve pain associated with tarsal tunnel syndrome. Some individuals may benefit from a local injection of certain medications (anesthetics) to reduce pain or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. This may also prove to be diagnostic, as relief brought on by an injection of an anaesthetic around the affected nerve confirms the diagnosis. Immobilization such as through the use of a cast can also be beneficial in some cases. Physical therapy may also be recommended. Surgery is recommended for individuals with severe symptoms who do not respond to conservative treatment. The purpose of the surgery is to decompress the nerve from within the tarsal tunnel and/or removal of any spaceoccupying lesion.

Diagnosis A diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome is made based upon identification of characteristic symptoms, a detailed patient history, a thorough clinical evaluation and a variety of specialized tests. A specific test that can identify an irritated nerve is Tinel’s sign. During a Tinel’s sign test, a trained practitioner will tap or apply pressure to the tibial nerve. If this causes a tingling or a “pins and needles” sensation in the foot or toes, it is considered positive and is indicative of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Additional tests that may be performed include an MRI and/or nerve conduction velocity test (NCV). The later is an electrical test used to detect abnormal nerve conditions. Treatment The treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome is directed toward the specific symptoms that are apparent in each individual. Conservative

Chef Interrupted Launch

In April 2001, Trevis Gleason was a chef on the rise, teaching at prestigious American institutions such as Cornell University and California Culinary Academy. Then one day, just as his career was entering rarefied air, he suffered a stroke-like episode and was diagnosed with incurable multiple sclerosis. He lost everything – his job, his marriage, even his perceived persona. Gleason, who runs the award-winning blog Life With MS, said, ‘What I’ve come to realise is multiple sclerosis doesn’t steal away our futures; it steals what we thought and expected to await us in our futures. So, as I looked at my “ruined” life after my diagnosis, I saw an opportunity to fulfil a long-postponed dream: I put life in Seattle on hold and moved to West Kerry.’ Renting a cottage in ‘The Town’, braving sheep-obstructed roads and tapping into a profound passion for food, he learned his life, loves and even dreams weren’t lost – just waiting to be rediscovered. In his memoir “Chef Interrupted”, Gleason reveals the challenges and joys of living with a disease in an Irish town. He surmounts physical setbacks and cultural differences with self-effacing wit, serving up life’s lessons and his favourite recipes one tasty chapter after another. This is a story not of survival, but of living life to the full. “Chef Interrupted” will be launched in O’Flaherty’s Bar, Dingle on Sunday 30th April at 6pm

One of the highlights for the team was meeting Kieran Donaghy and our own Donnchadh Walsh during the day. It was a great experience and now they need to work hard at training on Sunday mornings to keep improving their skills. U-12s: The two Cromane under-12 teams played their third set of games in Divisions 5A/B of the county league in Cromane last Sunday with Duagh the visitors. After a win and loss in their opening rounds, against Renard and Spa respectively, it was all action on the two pitches as both sides went for the win. Some excellent skills were exhibited by both sets of players on a sublime evening for football. U12 County League Division 5 results: A - Cromane 3-9, Duagh 4-20 B - Cromane 2-12, Duagh 5-4 Next up is their final county league game away to Listry on Sunday, May 7. U-14s Feile: The Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-14s competed in group C3 of the Kerry Feile qualifiers in Listry last week. In their first game they put in a terrific performance, beating Firies 3-4 to 1-4. A great display, especially the second half, culminated in late goals from Jason O’Connor and Charlie Foley to seal the win. This meant that they played the hosts Keel/Listry to decide who went through from group C3 to the county Feile semi-finals. GGC continued from where they let off and another Charlie Foley goal gave them a one-point lead at half-time: 1-4 to 1-3. In the second half scores dried up as both teams upped their work-rate. The winners of the game knew that they would qualify and, in the end, a strong finish from Keel/Listry gave them a one-point win. Final score: GGC 1-5, Keel/Listry 1-6. It was a great effort from our lads. The Cromane lads involved included Cian Lyons, Josh Key, Liam Joy, Charlie Foley, and Jason O’Connor. He was very approachable and interested in everybody and a tireless worker in the parish. Renovations and new ceilings at St. Mary’s Church Camp were carried out under his supervision. He was actively involved in the Parish Council at the time and supported a major fundraising drive for the church. The mythology and folklore of Caherconree the highest promonotory fort in Ireland and seat of the High Kings of Munster and the story of Curai Mac Daire, Blaithnaid and Cuchulainn of the red branch knights of Ulster resonate with all of us in Camp so it is no surprise to hear that Caherconree has a lot more archaeology on its slopes than we know of. Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly I love early spring when you breathe a big sigh of relief that the winter is over and though there may be some cold, wet and windy days to endure yet, you also feel hopeful and excited as warmer weather approaches and the spring herbs timidly start to appear. I do however also find that this time of the year can bring with it low energy and fatigue as we in our own way timidly begin to embrace the longer days and the ‘pet’ days that arrive intermittently. I am speaking from a personal point of view and I do find there is a pattern every spring when my energy is just not up to the myriad of things I want to do in preparation for the longer warmer days. I am not alone in this and many people feel sluggish after the winter months and a bit despondent as they slowly try to come out of hibernation. Herbal tonics are a must therefore for this time of the year together with herbs that come under the umbrella of adaptogens, which allow the body to cope with physical or emotional stresses. Herbal tonics help the body by promoting strength and vitality and include many common herbs such as Chamomile (Matricaria reticuta), Dandelion (Tarax radix) and Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus), which act as local and systemic tonics for the body. Other wonderful herbs to take this time of the year include Nettle (Urtica dioca) and Cleaver (Galium aparine). Nettle is a wonderful blood tonic and cleavers help to clear a sluggish lymphatic system. I have read that if the lymph is circulating freely it is almost impossible to become sick. Echinacea is another important lymphatic and an immune enhancer. Adaptogens similar to herbal tonics act locally and systemically and help to normalise stress hormone levels, boost the immune system and relieve fatigue. Herbal adaptogens can be referred to as ‘super tonics’ and as the term suggests help the body to adapt to any new stress by stimulating the body’s own defensive mechanism. Stress whether it is physical or emotional weakens the body systems leaving a person feeling tired and more vulnerable to a range of illnesses. Root herbs, such as, the Ginseng spp. Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera) Roseroot stonecrop (Rhodiola rosea) and Astragalus to mention a few restore depleted systems and act as strong immune enhancers. More familiar western remedies include Burdock (Arctium lappa), Sage (Salvia off.), Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Borage (Borago off.) and Oatstraw (Avena sativa). This latter group is not always included in the adaptogen list but evidence continues to emerge as to these herbs ability to restore and increase resistance and vitality.

appropriate. Gentle tonics may be necessary initially to restore and build a person’s overall health before looking to restore the vital energies. We are well into the spring now (I missed the last deadline for publication!!), but there is always a place for herbal tonics to restore and tone a weakened system and many of these herbs can be taken in the long-term. The adaptogens or super tonics, on the other hand, play an invaluable role in times of chronic (long-term) stress or illness and clearly have a place intermittently when needed. Enjoy the work/play! Safety Considerations In general the adaptogens with their ability to stimulate the immune system may interfere with immunosuppressant medication. Astragalus can potentiate the effects of some cancer treatments. Rhodiola should be avoided be avoided by people with mental or emotional agitation Siberian ginseng may interfere with cardiac medications and blood pressure medication whether for high or low blood pressure and may also enhance some drug effects e.g. antibiotics. Echinacea theoretically may interfere with immunosuppressant therapy. Ashwaganda may be contraindicated with sedative type medications and may potentiate thyroid medication. Dandelion, Echinacea and Chamomile may cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to the Asteracea family Fresh Yellow Dock root may cause vomiting and should not be taken with other laxatives Sage should be avoided during pregnancy or breast feeding. Important not to exceed the recommended dosage (more than 15g of sage leaf per dose) Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted in her shop Nature’s Knowledge, Lower Main Street, Dingle, by email at: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109

I will look at these herbs in more detail in future articles but give a brief summary of some of the benefits here. The ginseng species for, example, which has long been mainstreamed into western herbalism well deserves its popularity as a potent remedy. Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), the most popular and well known in this family of herbs can be used as a deep restorative and immune enhancer when the body is in a weakened state. Rhodiola has similar qualities and can be taken to relieve depression and anxiety. All stress related conditions including illnesses will benefit from adaptogens reducing the negative effects on the body of chronic stress. Sage has a long tradition as a longevity elixir and is used as a restorative and immune enhancing herb while thyme and borage will help to stimulate immunity. Burdock is fast becoming recognised as one of our very own adaptogens with wonderful lymphatic cleansing actions and immune enhancing abilities. Herbal tonics and adaptogens do not of course produce immediate results but a minimum period of 10 days will show a marked improvement in overall energy levels as these ‘super tonics’ begin to take effect. Depending on the person the minimum period can provide that extra energy boost needed to tackle all that spring cleaning. A period of three months with breaks may be called for in some instances and it is wise to consult your herbal practitioner before embarking on a course of these tonics as adaptogens should not be overused in people with strong vital energy or debilitated people. Practitioners will always work with a blend of herbs to create a comprehensive formula and as many as five to seven different herbs in any one formula is standard. Each person is different with different strengths and weaknesses and there are some conditions and times in our health cycle where the adaptogens in particular are not West Kerry Live 41

Dingle and its Hinterland People, Places and Heritage le

Felicity Hayes-McCoy agus Wilf Judd foilsithe ag Collins Press ‘The western Dingle Peninsula, at the edge of Europe, is one of Ireland’s most remote regions. For millennia, it has also been a hub for foreign visitors: its position made it a medieval centre for traders, and the wildness of its rugged landscape has been the setting for spiritual pilgrimage. This seeming paradox is what makes Dingle and its western hinterland unique: the ancient, native culture is preserved, while also being influenced by the world at large. It’s a rich heritage, best understood by chatting with the people who live and work here. But how many visitors get that opportunity?Starting with Dingle town, and following the Slea Head Drive, Felicity Hayes-McCoy and Wilf Judd take us on an insiders’ tour of the region, interviewing locals, ranging from farmers, postmasters and boatmen to museum curators, radio presenters and sean-nós singers. Residents for the last twenty years, Felicity and Wilf offer practical information and advice as well as cultural insights that will give any visitor a deeper understanding of this special place’ - Collins Press You are invited to the book launch at The Dingle Whiskey Distillery Friday 28 May from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m.

Farm Assist Means Test

or leasing of land or milk quotas is assessed in full. Capital1 (including property Project4:Layout 21/08/2014 any 16:57 Page 1 that you do not live in) is assessed using the formula applied to means-tested social welfare payments. Question If you have an off-farm job, €20 per day (up How is income from different sources asto a maximum of €60 per week) is deducted sessed for Farm Assist? I do some contracting from your assessable weekly earnings and as well as farming and my spouse works partthen 60% of the remainder is assessed as time. We have two children. weekly means. Your spouse’s income from Answer employment is assessed in the same way. If The means test for Farm Assist takes into account virtually every type of income you may have but it assesses different income in different ways. Your income from farming and other selfemployment (like contracting) is assessed as the gross income that you or your spouse may be expected to receive, less any expenses you incur to earn that income. From 8 March 2017, €254 of the income each year is disregarded for each of your two children (it would be €381 for a third or subsequent child). 70% of the balance is assessed (it was 100% up to March 2017). Payments under rural environmental schemes such as GLAS and SAC are assessed separately from other farm income. €2,540 is deducted from the total amount of all these payments each year and 50% of the remainder is disregarded. Expenses incurred in complying with these environmental measures are then deducted and the balance is assessed as means. Income from an occupational pension

you have seasonal work, you are assessed on your earnings only during the period you are actually working. When you apply for Farm Assist, a social welfare inspector will visit you and ask to see various documents. The inspector will then assess the costs incurred in running the farm. You are entitled to receive a copy of this farm income calculation. You can get detailed information on how farm income is assessed at welfare.ie.
