Ashe Memorial Hall In Tralee To Be Rededicated To Thomas Ashe
Celebrating Biodiversity Week
Two Free An Taisce Nature Walks
To mark the centenary year of the death of the Lispole native and Kerry 1916 leader, the Ashe Memorial Hall on Denny Street, Tralee is to be rededicated to Thomas Ashe at a ceremony hosted by Kerry County Council on Monday, 22 May 2017 at 11am. The building, which was first named after the west Kerry man at a meeting of Kerry County Council in May 1928, served as the home of Kerry County Council and Tralee Urban District Council for almost 60 years, and now houses the Kerry County Museum. At the ceremony on 22 May, the iconic building will be rededicated to the memory of Thomas Ashe who died on 25 September 1917 while on hunger strike. The event will be led by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea and members of the Ashe family, including his niece, Eileen Quinn, who will address the gathering. A colour party from the Defence Forces will be in attendance and a flag-raising ceremony will take place. Actor, Declan McCarthy – who recited Casement’s Speech from the Dock at Banna in April 2016 – will recite Ashe’s poem, ‘Let Me Carry Your Cross for Ireland, Lord.’ Music will be provided by the Tralee Pipe Band. Members of the public are welcome to attend the event which will take place on the paved area at the front of the Ashe Memorial Hall. School groups wishing to attend are asked to contact Kerry County Council’s Arts Office in advance on 066 7183541. Those attending are asked to use the Brandon Car Park or other car parks nearby.
Wild Flowers of the Inch Sandpit
A short walk on the Inch Sandpit will introduce you to one of the great glories of Kerry. How this evolved from a massive glacial moraine to a mosaic of habitats with it’s rich variety of wild flowers and a wonderful wild landscape can be enjoyed on this outing. Led by naturalist Bernie Goggin. Meet at Sammy’s at 2pm on Sunday 21st May
Beenbawn Head Nature Walk
A great intro to the beautiful cliff flora of this stunning headland so little known outside of Dingle. Together you will see oceanic seabirds like the Fulmar which can’t stand on it’s legs sharing a breeding cliff with the landlocked and delightful chough. The ancient rocks of Old Red Sandstone formed when North America and Western Europe were united and now the remnants of mountains as high as the Himalayas make the bones of this great site. To get there turn off at the signpost about a mile east of Dingle and less than a mile down is the carpark for Beenbawn Beach. Meeting at 2pm on Sunday the 28nd May.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 16th May will be “Viceroy’s House” . This British-Indian historical drama stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson and Michael Gambon . For 6 months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. The film’s story unfolds within that great house. Upstairs lived Mountbatten together with his wife and daughter; downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite - Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi - converged on the House to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted. A decision was taken to divide the country and create a new Muslim homeland: Pakistan. It was a decision whose consequences reverberate to this day. The following week on Tuesday 23rd May the feature will be the film adaptation of Julian Barnes’ Booker prize winning novel “The Sense of an Ending”. Jim Broadbent gives a hugely impressive performance as Tony Webster who leads a reclusive and quiet existence until long buried secrets from his past force him to face the flawed recollections of his younger self, the truth about his first love and the devastating consequences of decisions made a lifetime ago.

Celebrating Singing in Annascaul Bert McCann The cream of West Kerry musical talent is due to gather in Annascaul village in early June. The occasion which will bring this group of musicians and singers together is the second ‘Celebrating Singing’ gathering set to take place in the homeplace of Tom Crean and Jerome O’Connor from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th June. The event was originated last year to mark the first birthday of the Annascaul Singing Club which meets monthly in the village’s Patcheen’s Bar. Underpinning the club is the idea that everyone should have the opportunity to sing if they are so minded. In 2016 the occasion was marked by the staging of a variety of musical experiences ranging from pub sessions to singing, harmony and guitar workshops. On Friday evening 9th June 1917, the club’s second birthday celebrations will be opened by Philip King, founder and curator of the annual ‘Other Voices’ festival, member of ‘Scullion’, documentary film maker and one of Ireland’s most prominent music ambassadors. Philip will be followed by local singers the Fox Tales recently returned from playing around Europe and singer/songwriter Martin Hansard, who has recently published a book of his lyrics and poetry. Patcheen’s will later host the Cooleys, singers of fine songs ranging through traditional, modern folk song and country blues repertoires. Tony Owens a founder-member of the Annascaul Singing Club will provide support. Saturday morning will bring choir leader Louise Foxe to Scoil Bhreac Chluain to conduct a harmony workshop. She has formed and worked with choirs not only throughout Ireland but also in Tanzania and Rwanda. She has advised the Dingle Gospel Choir recently and also on occasion has brought choirs to work with celebrated performers like Luka Bloom and Kila. Pat Johnson, formerly of ‘Avatar’ returns with a guitar workshop. Joan Greene musician, singer and much respected chef, in what is likely to be a welcome addition to the celebrations, will have her cafe open

throughout Saturday and Sunday. She will not only be serving up great food but will perform songs and music and welcome those local folk, visitors and troubadours who call in. Meanwhile the village Main Street and the community centre will be seeing performances from Splanc-the Dingle Carnival Band, the Dingeleles Ukelele Band amongst other visiting guests. In the early evening Hanafin’s Bar will host a bbq event featuring the Fox Tales and friends. Then at 10pm at The Randy Leprecahun, the Flatliners will take the stage to finish off the day with their own electrifying interpretations of blues and Cajun standards. Harmony will reign once again on in the school on Sunday morning; a singer/songwriter session is also in the planning as is the screening of ‘Christy,’ Philip King’s documentary insight into the life and art of Christy Moore. And there may be other treats in store. In the community centre Ruti Lach’s workshops for children will entertain little ones up to the age of eight accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. This well-regarded community musician and jazz pianist will return in the evening to feature in a triple-header at Joan’s Café. Ruti will deliver an extract from her one-person show entitled ‘Sideways on Planet Piano ‘ a klezmer, folk and blues reflection on one woman’s dilemnas which has been devised for an adult audience, and apparently is both funny and touching, while Abigail Joffe will sing songs from her recently released album ‘Lay Me Down’. Abigail’s work is well-crafted and pleasing and has been described as ‘'feminine and sensual with a hint of whimsy'. Joan Greene will be adding flavour of her very own to what promises to be a fabulous musical feast to close out the weekend. A detailed programme will be available soon. All of the above events are free. To help defray some of the costs a pub quiz will be held in Hanafin’s Bar, Annascaul at 9pm on Friday 19th May. For information about ‘Celebrating Singing’ and details for booking for the harmony, guitar and children’s workshops please ring 083-1246634 West Kerry Live 5

If you live outside of Dingle and have been enjoying the marvellous spell of good weather recently, need something to read or watch but can’t get into town – don’t worry Leabharlann Chiarraí mobile library service is the perfect solution. Kerry Library has 2 mobile library vans, with one of them due to be replaced later this year. The library vans provide a service throughout the peninsula from Keel to Feothanach and Camp to Baile An Fheirtéaraigh. The mobile libraries function very much like a normal branch library with a broad eclectic range of items for both adults and children. Borrowers using the mobiles also benefit from an extended loan period and can return items to Dingle Library or indeed any other branch. So you needn’t worry if you occasionally miss the library at its scheduled stop. There are 19 scheduled stops on the peninsula and each one is visited once a fortnight. So there should be one not too far away from you.

Camino na Sáile Baineadh ana-shásamh as na cláracha, Camino na Sáile, a craoladh níos luaithe i mbliana ar an turas farraige a dhein triúr ó Chorca Dhuibhne, Breandán Ó Beaglaoich, Breandán Ó Muircheartaigh agus Danny Sheehy go Santiago na Spáinne. Lean an turas ó 2014 go 2016 go raibh Liam Holden, ó Chill Choinnigh leo leis agus Glen Hansard ar feadh chúig seachtaine i 2016. Bhailigh an fear scannán, Dónal Ó Céilleachair, dhá chéad uair a chloig d’ábhar físe thar trí shamhraidh. Tá traidisiún láidir don gCamino in Iarthar Dhuibhneach toisc go mbíodh imircigh agus oilithrigh ón dtaobh seo ag tabhairt a n-aghaidh ar an Spáinn ó na meánaoiseanna anuas go dtí an lá atá inniu againn. Beidh costas iomlán €35,000 i gceist chun an scannán seo a dhéanamh. Tá 40% don gcostas bailithe cheana féin. Beifear buíoch do shintiúis ó €15 go €10,000.00. Camino by Sea Following the much enjoyed programmes on TG4 earlier this year, Camino na Sáile, ANÚ Pictures plan to make an international feature length film about the pilgrimage to Santiago by naomhóg/currach by three West Kerry men, Breandán Ó Beaglaoich, Breandán Ó Muircheartaigh agus Danny Sheehy from 2014 to 2016. Liam Holden from Kilkenny was another crew member and the singer Glen Hansard joined them for five weeks in 2016. The film maker, Dónal Ó Céilleachair, amassed two hundred hours of footage over three long summers. The Camino story has a resonance for us in West Kerry as people from these parts were regular travellers to Spain from the Middle Ages up to the present time. If you would like to help to make this film it is possible to make a donation – anything from €15 upwards. 40% of the total production costs, €35.000, has already been collected. WORKSHOP • CAFÉ • SHOWROOM
Summer has arrived and this fantastic weather is making us look forward even more to the June Bank Holiday weekend and Cuisle Chorca Dhuibhne:Dingle’s Global Rhythm Festival (Jun 2- 4). As a community-based not-for-profit festival we want as many people, adults and children to get involved and enjoy themselves over the weekend. There will be various drumming and dance workshops available for all levels and abilities, gigs and interactive drum circles. The focus is on Fun!!!! The festival tent returns for a second year and will be based in An Conair Bar beer garden, so in the (extremely, highly, impossibly) unlikely event of bad weather all events will go ahead as planned. Gorse Fires - A Serious Risk Lighting gorse fires at this time of year is illegal. It is also wrong and a serious health and safety as well as environmental risk. Those who light them, and leave the fire to it’s own devices are irresponsible, putting others lives, assets and incomes at risk. If caught, they face severe reprimand and hard and all as it is to say this, they not may, but definitely deserve it. In light of recent events in Gaugan Barra in Co Cork and in Co Galway in the past week, Department and Fire Service officials will have little sympathy to the offenders, as the dangers and resultant damage is not more than apparent. The Department of Agriculture wish to remind landowners and the public that it is an offence under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 (amended by Section 46 of the Wildlife Act, 2000) to burn, from 1st March to 31st August in any year, any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated. Individuals who are found to burn vegetation within that prohibited period are liable to prosecution by An Garda Síochána or by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Department of Agriculture has issued a number of Fire Danger Notices to the forestry sector since the beginning of March, including elevating the risk to ‘Red’ on 2 May, in advance of the recent spate of fires. These fires are monitored through a combination of EU Copernicus and US NASA data streams which have detected over 50 illegal fire locations using satellite data up to 21 April 2017. An indication of the scale of the problem is that this number represents just under half of the total known fire locations to that date. They operates a Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes wherein applicants are obliged to comply with Cross Compliance, including requirements in relation to the burning of vegetation. Farmers are reminded that where land has been burned, it is not generally eligible for Basic Payment. Deliberate or uncontrolled fires can destroy habitats, wildlife, farm land and farm structures and can threaten homes and lives. There is a huge cost to this reckless behaviour not just to physical property, but also the cost of disruption to normal emergency services operations. We all must continue to work closely with the DAFM, and Government agencies such as the emergency services, local authorities, An Garda Síochána and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, as well as with farm organisations and the forestry industry itself to try to address this problem. Forestry owners are urged along with other farmers, rural dwellers and other countryside users to be vigilant to the threat of fire, to report any suspicious activity to An Garda Síochána, and to report any uncontrolled or unattended fires immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services via 112/999 service. Fires are dangerous, but have their uses, at the appropriate time, and under proper supervision and circumstances. The exception to this is where controlled burning is carried out in full compliance with all relevant environmental legislative requirements and any other lawful requirements, having first consulted with and notified the Gardaí and the local fire service. In the case of Natura lands (lands designated as SAC and/or SPA), prior approval must be obtained through the Activities Requiring Consent (ARC) system as implemented by NPWS. But finally, if you have a box of matches in your pocket, leave them there. Farmers to apply online for the Basic Payment Scheme by 15th May Farmers are reminded that the closing date for the receipt of applications for this year’s Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is Monday 15th May 2017. They are reminded of the importance of this closing date to ensure they benefit from the maximum payment under their BPS. The Department is urging all farmers who have not yet submitted their BPS application to do so at the earliest possible date. Failure to do so will result in loss of some or all their BPS/ANC/GLAS income for the year. In 2016, over 102,000 farmers applied online for their BPS, and this shows that more and more farmers are finding that the best way to apply is online. Next year, it will be compulsory to apply on-line, so why not start the process sooner, and get use to it. Online applicants will also get the benefit of preliminary checks and these checks will allow farmers the opportunity to address any dual claims, over claims and overlaps identified on online applications within specified time frames after the BPS closing date without penalty. These checks are available for online applicants only. Last year, approximately 5,000 farmers got

the benefit of a preliminary check. BurrenLIFE Programme nominated for Green Awards This year the European Commission is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the LIFE Programme which has been supporting Environment and Climate actions in the EU since its inception in May 1992. This programme has successfully contributed to the preservation of our unique European natural, cultural and social heritage over the past 25 years, with over 4,300 projects supported and some €3.4 billion spent over this period. To mark the 25th Anniversary of the LIFE Programme a number of initiatives are being run across the month of May, and one particular initiative is the Green Awards Facebook competition to choose the most outstanding completed LIFE projects since 1992. Ireland’s very own BurrenLIFE Programme has been nominated as one of the top 5 projects in the Nature and Biodiversity category. The BurrenLIFE Programme has been tremendously successful in pioneering alternative approaches to sustainable management of high nature value farmland in the Burren region. It focuses not only on positive landscape management but also on cultural heritage and has also led to a changing mindset in how we can value, protect and manage our landscapes using partnership-led bottom-up approaches. The short-listing of the BurrenLIFE programme as one of the top 5 projects in the Nature category is a reflection of the widespread recognition and respect for the project at EU level. The winners in each of the categories will be announced on the 30 May 2017 at the Green Awards ceremony during EU Green Week in Brussels. There will be two Green Award winners in each of the three categories (i.e. six winners in total). The winners will be selected by means of a public vote on Facebook. Voting is open now until 10 May 2017. Organic Retailers - Process for Granting Exemptions The process for granting exemptions was recently unveiled from the usual licensing conditions for retailers stocking only pre-packed organic produce. Referring to the general rules for sale of organic produce, the Andy Doyle, Junior Minister for Agriculture noted that any operator engaged in the production, preparation, storage or import (from third countries) of organic products, or who places such products on the market, must be registered and licensed as an organic operator. Individual EU countries may offer an exemption to some operators who restrict themselves to the sale of prepacked organic products, provided that they have not been involved in preparing, importing or storing these products other than in connection with their point of sale, or have not contracted this out to another operator to do so on their behalf. Retailers who qualify for an exemption, should apply immediately to the Organic Unit of the Department using the standard application form, which is available on the Department’s website Sheep Notes: -Nematodirosis in lambs Nematodirus is a disease that affects young lambs at 4 – 10 weeks of age. The symptoms are a watery-green scour which leads to severe dehydration, and mortality in some cases. Onset of disease can be extremely rapid and mortalities can occur before eggs appear in the faeces. The disease is the result of a large number of over wintered larvae hatching out within a short period following the right climatic conditions. Young grazing lambs pick up the infective larvae which develop into adults in the intestine and after a period eggs are passed out in the faeces. These eggs will then over winter on the pasture and become the source of infection for the follow year’s lambs. The Department of Agriculture’s parasite forecast issued in mid April estimated that the peak hatching of Nematodirus larvae would occur in most parts of the country during the period 9th to 21st April with hatching occurring a week earlier in Atlantic coastal areas. It has predicted that clinical signs might appear in lambs two to three weeks after these dates. This disease can be prevented by keeping this year’s lambs off pasture that was grazed by lambs last year. Where this is not possible, lambs should be dosed with a suitable anthelmintic in early to mid – May followed by a repeat dose in 4/5 weeks. Until recently there have been no known cases of resistance by Nematodirus parasite to some drenches and the recommendation is to use either a white (benzimidazole) or yellow (levamizole) drench for controlling the disease. However, the first case of white drench (benzimidazole) resistance in this species has been confirmed in Scotland, so isn’t far away from us here also. Ideally a faecal egg count resistance test should be carried out after using a white drench to confirm that the drug is still effective for Nematodirus on your farm. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Why Are We Stone Mad For Avocado? Irene Ní Fhlannúra
as well as helping out in numerous other bodily tasks. The fat content comes from the type of fat our bodies love for brain function, supple skin, joint mobility, heart and vascular health, hormones and the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Naturally occurring plant-sterols found in avocados help reduce bad cholesterol and inflammation. Carotenoids – betacarotene, lutein and zeaxanthin are known to stave off Age-related Macular Disease (AMD) and are abundant in avocado. The fat of the avocado helps our bodies absorb these carotenoids and deliver them to their target organs, the eyes. The spectrum of B vitamins in avocado is also remarkable and with regular consumption can offset some of the negative aspects of modern living – stress, fatigue, anxiety and unease. The Aztecs were probably right calling it an aphrodisiac because the avocado has all the ingredients to keep a body and mind youthful, healthy and vibrant, useful qualities for throwing shapes in and out of the bedroom!
Whether you are a food aficionado or not, there is no escaping the latest obsession with avocados – they are everywhere! So much so that the first all-avocado restaurant opened in Amsterdam earlier this year, with every meal from starter to dessert featuring avocado as an ingredient. ‘Tis far from avocados we were reared, you might say and you’d be right as most of the World’s produce come from the sunny climes of Mexico and South America. The average consumption of avocados in Europe has doubled in the last ten years and despite a shortage of supply and a hefty price increase there is no dampening of our passion for this weird fruit! Apparently, it was an Irishman, Hans Sloane from Co. Down, who in 1696 while documenting plants in Jamaica, came up with the name avocado – as its native Aztec name, Ahuacati, was too difficult to pronounce! He might have been saving us from embarrassment as the Aztec name can be translated into “testicle” referring to its shape and reputed aphrodisiac powers. Slowly but surely, with the help of the Spanish conquistadors, the avocado made its way back to Europe. Now, five hundred years later, we are most grateful of that name change as we munch away on our avocados without any blushes! The avocado provided great nutrition to the ancient Aztecs as it is almost a perfect food, in that it supplies most of the vital nutrients needed for our survival. The avocado tree can produce up to 300 avocados in a season and has the added bonus of not ripening on the tree, but only after picking, reducing wastage and spoiled crops. Its thick skin and high antioxidant content of vitamin C, E and carotenoids ensures its goodness stays intact during its travels around the World. Nowadays, science has revealed the wealth of nutrients contained in the creamy flesh of the avocado which is impressive. Rich in vitamins C, E, K, B6, B2, B3, B5 and folate as well as carotenoids - betacarotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, this fruit sets itself apart like no other. It is the only fruit that provides a significant amount of monounsaturated fat, with olives being a close second best. This healthy fat is attributed to the health benefits noted in the Mediterranean diet for longevity, cardiovascular health and glowing skin. The high fat content of this fruit satisfies our appetite, reducing cravings and overeating and can slow down the breakdown of carbohydrates to glucose, keeping our blood sugar stable.
It is tempting to think if something is good for you, more is better – be careful not to go overboard with avocado. To enjoy the health benefits of avocado, eat about a quarter avocado with low calorie foods such as summer fruits, salads, leaves and vegetables. The avocado naturally complements these foods and greatly enhances the uptake of nutrients when eaten together. There is no need to add other high fat foods to meals with avocado, such as nuts, oils, cheeses or dairy foods. Sliced, diced, mashed or puréed it is the perfect accompaniment to Summer eating so enjoy it frequently now through to September and then leave it off the menu until next year again. As with all good aphrodisiacs, creativity and timing is everything! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic, Dingle 066 9151360. Avocado is made up of 73% water, 15% fat, 8.5% carbohydrates (mostly fibre) and 2% protein. Although often considered fattening, this nutritional profile tells a different story. The carbohydrate content is mostly indigestible fibre which provides nutrition for our gut flora, which in turn, provide us with enhanced immunity, vitamin K and B vitamins Natural Health Treatments

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Friday, May 1, 1987. Fresh and cooler than of late but good sunny spells. Took some rubbish to the dump in Kilfountain and came across Dee Counihan’s car which had crashed into a telephone pole. The car was a write-off and the pole was split in two. Someone told me she had been avoiding a dog. She may have a broken leg and is in hospital in Tralee lucky to be alive, I’d say. Discussed the proposed ANco course at the CBS with Pádraig Firtéar. He asked me to be the co-ordinator at around £200 per week and starting in October - will give it serious thought.
Saturday, May 2. Took the car to Moran’s garage after breakfast and had new points fitted - made a big improvement. Took my bike to the repair shop in Dykegate lane and it was fixed in half an hour - cost £2-50. Called to Reiner at the Tigín Bán gallery and he’ll take 5 ‘Dingle’ poems. Took the kids for a cycle to Beenbawn. We clambered up the rocks to the big ledge on the western side. Met John O’Connor of the ESB and talked about putting a cable from the house to the workshop.
Sunday, May 3. Good weather, fine and sunny but coolish. Cycled to Dún Síon with the kids and walked around by the river as far as the big ogham stone that lies on a plinth and gets covered in high tides. to the cinema at the kid’s insistence. The film was called Jake Speed - a load of rubbish. Left the cinema with a headache.
Monday, May 4. Up early and left home at 8 o’clock heading for Limerick and another week of work experience at Tony Clarke’s framing shop in Thomas Street. Started work right away because of an impending power strike which didn’t materialise.
Tuesday, May 5. Didn’t sleep too well in the guest house near Jury’s hotel so resolved to move later. Worked hard until 1pm when the power was cut by the striking ESB workers. It was off for two hours. Some shops stayed open but the big stores closed down - too many thieves at work. Changed lodgings to a B&B on the Ennis road - a fine spacious room with big windows. The power was cut again at 7.30 and remained off till midnight. Darkness had fallen over Limerick by 10pm except for some hotels and hospitals that had their own generators. The Ennis road was eerie - candles in windows and voices in the dark.
Wednesday, May 6. Up at 8 and a good breakfast of grapefruit juice, cornflakes, 3 rashers, 2 sausages and an egg plus tea and toast. Walked to work. The power was off again all morning and up to early afternoon. The ESB men are playing hardball. Had lunch in Bewleys cafe -they are totally dependent on electricity. The manager told me that he was operating a shuttle service of flasks of hot water from his house to the cafe. They transported over 80 flasks this morning. Many of Limerick’s big stores are closed and after work this evening I found only one cafe open for biz.
14 West Kerry Live
Thursday, May 7. No power this morning. It was on all night which wasn’t much good for the people of Limerick. Paid my B&B bill for two nights after breakfast which was £20. Power back on at 10am and news of the strike being fixed following an all-night session with mediator Bertie Ahern. Left Limerick at 5pm - a fine warm, sunny afternoon - and headed for Dingle. The car conked out a few miles outside Tralee at around 6.30. Kevin Devane was passing in a Moran’s bus and stopped. I gave him Tom Sheehy’s number and Tom arrived two hours later. We tied a rope to the hitch on the front bumper and off we went. But the bumper got pulled off beyond Annascaul! Anyway, got home by 9.45 - tired and hungry.
Friday, May 8. Good sleep. Up early to a fine sunny day - more like June than May but, strangely, there are no flowers or blossoms on our apple trees yet. Car started easily but took it to Moran’s garage and went for a spin with the mechanic Peter Lamb up the Conor Pass road and the trouble started again. So, they fitted a new petrol filter and replaced the bumper. Later, was amazed to find the decapitated body of a hare in our garage with its head lying beside it and our cat chewing away on its neck. some hunter!
Saturday, May 9. All the family very tired this morning - must be this weather which continues to be bright, sunny and very warm in sheltered areas. Took rubbish to the dump and took a walk along the pier on the way home. Had a quick look at the work going on at the Skellig Hotel which will reopen soon. The new pool area looks enormous but the new front facade is not as impressive as the original one. Took the kids for a cycle before lunch as far as Garfinny bridge via Flemingstown and it gave us an appetite. Then drove to Clochán, near Ventry, and explored the souterrain on John Connor’s land. It’s on two levels - two bee-hive rooms on the first level then down into six rooms carved out of the earth. It was fairly mucky and access seemed more difficult than years ago. (Site 555 in the Dingle Archaeological Survey book). We watched the 32nd Eurovision song contest from Belgium tonight and were happy to see Johnny Logan win again for Ireland with the song ‘Hold me Now’.
Sunday, May 10. Took the family over the Conor Pass after lunch to Glentenassig woods, near Catlegregory. We had heard a great deal about the place but found it disappointing. Perhaps the evergreen trees seemed alien in the Kerry landscape. We parked near the lakes and ate some fruit at one of the picnic benches.

Salted Beef and Black Pudding Terrine, Piccalilli Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
10g ground turmeric
This is a great way to use up any leftover salted beef. For this recipe, you do not need any fancy equipment to set the terrine - a simple mould like a bread tin will do the job nicely! The Piccalilli adds another element to this dish as it cuts through the richness of the terrine. Enjoy this as a lunch or even as a starter.
½ tsp cumin seeds, crushed
Ingredients For the beef 1kg salted beef 1 carrot, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 onion, peeled and halved 1 stick of celery, cut into pieces bunch of thyme bay leaf ¼ leek 150g black pudding, cut into large dice 1 shallot, finely diced bunch of tarragon, finely chopped ½ tsp. dijon mustard
10g mustard powder ½ tbsp. mustard seeds 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 500ml white wine vinegar 150g sugar Method To cook the beef Place the beef, carrot, onion, celery, thyme, bay leaf, leek and the peppercorns in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a simmer and allow this to cook slowly for about two and a half hours.
In a small pot sweat the shallot for about 5 minutes. Add the diced black pudding and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add this mixture to a bowl and add in the shredded beef.
200g cauliflower, diced
For the Piccalilli
200g radishes, diced
Place the diced vegetables in a large colander over a bowl and sprinkle with the salt. Mix well, then cover with a tea towel and leave in a cool place for 24 hours. Then, rinse the vegetables in water and drain thoroughly. Set aside.
200g green beans, diced 200g cucumber, diced 200g red pepper, diced 50g salt 30g cornflour
To serve Take the terrine out of the fridge about an hour before needed to allow it to come to room temperature. Slice the terrine and place a slice on a plate. Spread a little piccalilli around the side.
Swing Dance
Mix in the herbs, mustard and sherry vinegar. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
For the Piccalilli
salt and pepper
Remove the pan from the heat and mix the vegetables into the hot, spicy sauce. Spoon the piccalilli into warm, sterilised jars and seal immediately.
Enjoy !!! Once the beef is cooked and tender remove it from the water. When it cools slightly shred the beef into small pieces. Keep it warm ./;,, while you prepare the rest of the ingrediLearn to ents for the terrine.
Line a small terrine mould with cling film. Place the mixture into the terrine mould. Place weights on top to press the terrine. Leave this overnight.
dash of sherry vinegar
into a smooth paste with a little of the vinegar. Pour the remaining vinegar into a saucepan with the sugar and bring to the boil. Pour a little of the hot vinegar over the blended spice paste, stir well and return to the pan. Bring gently to the boil for 3-4 minutes so that the spices release their flavours into the sauce.
Blend the cornflour, turmeric, mustard powder, mustard seeds, cumin and coriander

Wilde’s unique music is dark, heartfelt and poetic with songs ranging from thunderous to tender, populated by stories of lost love, shadow worlds, dirty dishes and crows. The following night on Saturday 13th the venue welcomes “Dim The Lights” featuring the mad skills of two of Corks DJ finest exports, Gilbert Steele and Paul O’Driscoll. Bringing their Dim the Lights club night out of Cork city, the two boys will be filling their bags with house, disco and various other types of dancefloor goodness. Free Entry On Friday 19th May at 10pm , SÍOMHA and Paddy Denny will play the Spa Rd venue. Described by Hotpress magazine as ‘a star in the making’, SÍOMHA has been captivating audiences worldwide with her infectious soulful energy and beautifully crafted songs. Aon Scéal? Poetry & Storytelling in West Kerry Paul Duffy Our inaugural poetry and prose night took place in Tigh Uí Cathain ( Kane’s Pub) in Ballyferriter on Wednesday 19th April. Special thanks once again to our “guest poet” for the night, West Cork poet Paul Ó Colmáin, who entertained everyone in attendance with a selection of his poetry and haikus from his soon to be published book of haikus. Several people also took the opportunity to read during our ‘open mic’ session, with poetry and prose read in Irish, English and German. Our next meeting will be in the same venue on Wednesday 17th May at 9.00pm. Failte roimh cách. Everyone welcome. Come along and read something you have written or a piece from a favourite author / poet, or maybe just come and listen. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated. Our “guest poet” for this month’s meeting will be Maggie Breen. Maggie comes from Wexford but has settled in West Kerry and would be well known in the area for her poetic prowess. The following is a poem from last month’s “guest poet” Paul Ó Colmáin.
St.Brigids Day
(winner Poet’s Podium 1995, Samhlaíocht Chiarraí) The sun awoke us. Like a fanfare or a burst of wild laughter. Playfully. Unfamiliar. Spilling in along the floor, Splashing up the walls, Streaming through the ever-open door. We didn’t, at first, understand, Failed to recognise the bright clamour of the sun. Then we remembered the words that you, druidlike, had spoken: “The Sun will come back on St.Brigid’s Day.”

Coiste Forbartha an Phobail, Baile na nGall. Áiseanna Spóirt: Tá na h-áiseanna ar An Mhuiríoch á úsáid anois ag daoine óga go mór mhór. Ba mhait linn dá mbeadh an úsáid níos mó eagraithe, na h-áiseanna á úsáid ag cumainn agus grúpaí ag baint úsáid as na cúirte chispeille, leadóg, 5-aside agus boules. Má tá suim ag éinne rudaí a eagrú, dein teagmháil le ball den Coiste thíos. Sports Facilities: The facilities in Muiríoch are now being used, but mostly on an ad-hoc basis by local young people. We would like more organised use of the facilities, with clubs and groups availing of the basketball, tennis, 5-aside and boules courts. Anybody interested in organising something? Contact Coiste members below. An t-Ionad: Tá ath-mhaisiúcháin ar an ionadh phobail déanta anois. Má tá smaoineamh maith ag éinne maidir le úsáid an t-Ionad dein teagmháil linn. Seirbhisí, grúpanna, cúrsaí, gnóthanna beaga? An t-Ionad: The re-decoration of this community centre has been completed. We are interested to hear from anyone who has an idea(s) for good use of it. Services, clubs, classes, small business? Bainisteóir Áiseanna: Chun úsáid ceart as na h-áiseanna spóirt agus an t-Ionad a chur i láthair, tá plean againn serbhisí Bhainisteóir Áiseanna páirt-aimsearach a gabháil. Antabhachtach chun buntáiste iomlán a bhaint as na h-áiseanna atá againn anois. Facilities Manager: To help develop good use of the sports facilities and An t-Ionad, we plan securing the services of a part-time facilities manager. This is crucial so that the community can take full advantage of the facilities now available. Planáil: Táimíd ag leanúint le plean forbartha áitiúil ceart a chur le chéile, plean go mbeidh tachaíocht an phobail áitiúil agus na gníomhaireachtaí fhorbairt ar fail againn. Tógann plean mar seo roinnt mhaith ama chun é a chur le chéile. Planning: We continue to pursue the compilation of a proper development plan for our area, one that the community and the development agencies can buy into and support. This process will take some time. Mion-feabhais: Táimíd ag leanúint le clár ‘glannaithe’ – níos mó i rith an t-Samhraidh. An-cabhair dúinn ó foireann SST chun cuma áilinn an áit a feabhsú. Níos mó saoráilí áitiúil ag teastáil chun cabhair leis an obair seo. 24 West Kerry Live
Minor Improvements: We continue with our ‘glannadh’ programme – more of these will take place over the summer. Our friends in the SST team provide invaluable help in keeping the place looking its best. More volunteers needed for this work!! AGM/Cúntaisí: I rith na míosa seo chughainn, socróimíd AGM, mar tá leagtha amach i bhunracht an Choiste. Roimh ré, beidh Cúntaisí an Choiste ar fail le scrúdú ag daoine áitiúl agus beidh siad curtha ós comhair daoine ag an AGM.

Prior to this, the Accounts of An Choiste will be available for inspection by community members and will be circulated at the AGM. Cistí: Míle buíochas dos na daoine a chur síntiúisí chugainn mar a bhí á lorg againn sa Nuachtlitir deireannach. matches against 2 local schoolboys clubs, trained at the West Brom Academy and also went to see West Brom v Leicester in the Premiership. Best of luck to he 4 squad members, Cian Wright, Aodhán O Connor, Maurice O’Connell and Caolán O’Connell who will be playing with Kerry U14s in the Kennedy Cup tournament in June. U15s Miss Out On Promotion To Premier In a very competitive Division 1 the JUNIORS led the league for long stretches but defeat in the final run in to Ballyhar Dynamos and Killorgan meant that Mike and Joe will have to battle agin in Division next season. Some great year round performances in this squad with the Costello boys (Adam and David) from Castlegregory being outstanding. Heartache in eth Cup when a last minute defensive error cost them the game against Listowel Celtic. The U16s In Second Place In Division 1 Always going to be a big ask to get one over on the well balance Killarney Athletic side who took the title in Division 16 but the JUNIORS will be happy with second place. Another team to suffer a last minute defeat to Listowel Celtic in the Shield semi-final last week. Impressive all season were Eoin Kennedy (Castlegregory) in goals and Colm Moriarty (Annascaul) in the centre-half role and of course we had Killian Falvey (Annascaul) lining out with the Kerry U16 squad.
U14 squad on their recent trip to West Brom Season Drawing to a Close!! The Soccer season is drawing to a close with most teams having finished their league and cup campaigns. No titles won for the club this season but it has been a tremendous season that has seen record numbers of players registered and coaches involved. Girls are back lining out in the JUNIORS colours, and we have club players are in county squads at 4 age groups.
FAI Summer Camp The JUNIORS are hosting an FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL in August (21st – 25th) down at the sportsfield. Academy Our Academy, (U6-U10 boys and girls), still training on Saturday mornings, has had a wonderful season with lots of Blitz played at home and away, plus an exciting trip to College Corinthians FC in Cork. Great numbers at these ages with a lot of new parents coming on board in coaching roles and helping out on Saturdays. New training kits for all members has everyone looking very smart. Watch out for the upcoming World Cup day on Saturday June 10th . 11s & 12s The 11s enjoyed a busy second half to the season with the U11 league kicking. Games won and lost as they improved week on week finishing with 2 great wins against Castleisland and Killorgan. Impressive all season have been Castlegregory boys Dylan O Sullivan in defence and Lorcan O Connor in goals. Well done too to Paudie Fitzgerald (Fermoyle) and Diarmuid Waugh (Derrymore) who both have been part of the Emerging Talent programme with the Kerry U11s.
Open for Dinner Fri 12th, Sat 13th, Wed 17th, Thurs 18th, Fri 19th, Sat 20th May
The U12s had a great second half to their season finishing with 4 wins on the trot earning them 3rd place in Division 1. Heartache in the Shield ¼ final when they lost in extra-time to LB Rovers. Still training this squad have improved week on week under the strong stewartship of Tim and Micko and will hit the ground running come next August. Strong performances through the season from Jason Casey (Camp) and Colum Rohan (Castle) in goals. Great Year For Girl’s Soccer The U12 Girls have had a great year back in the league after an absence of 5 years and results improved week on week finishing with a couple of draws against Killarney Celtic and Listowel Celtic. Still to play a cup semi-final v Killarney Celtic in the coming weeks. Gardening for Wildlife Darach Ó Murchú How does your garden grow - is it a haven for wildlife or is it a barren wasteland? Unfortunately most lawns are cut to within an inch of their lives, they are a desert for bees and other insects and subsequently the garden functions at only a fraction of its potential. Our modern manicured gardens are often sterile environments but pollinators need a variety of plants and habitats from early spring to late autumn to survive. We in turn need pollinators in more ways than you might think - they are part of the rich web of life and vital for our survival. Simple actions to help pollinators and wildlife: 1. Change your mowing regime, allow dandelions and other wildflowers to grow: - hold off on your first cut until the end of April - reduce the frequency of mowing, leave 4-6 weeks between cutting - set the blades higher - cut paths of lower grass in amongst your wildflower meadow 2. Allow an area in your garden to go wild – as well as helping wildlife a wild space reminds us of the freedom of life. 3. Plant a wide variety of native pollinator friendly plants, shrubs and trees and enjoy your garden.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams Feile. Another wonderful weekend of top class entertainment has come and gone with the recent Feile na Bealtaine now one of the premier arts festivals in the world. Each and every event and display was well attended and the Sunday Street Parade was once again a huge success as was the Mozart Requiem in St Marys Church. The book launches by local script writers Pat Nelligan and Trevis Gleeson attracted full houses and both are indeed a great read or very suitable present for family or friends with Dingle connections. Dingle Hub. The official opening of this dynamic new facility in Cooleen took place recently and really brings Dingle up to date with the fast changing methods of how business is conducted in the digital era which we live in today. The EIR sponsored fast link internet service available in this facility opens up get opportunities for locals and visitors alike and at a very reasonable cost too. Well done to all concerned in getting this facility off the ground and lets hope that the exciting employment opportunities follow. Tidy Towns. The Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7.p.m. There is a noticeable increase in the used cigarette butt litter mainly outside licenses premises. We appeal to staff in these outlets to give a few minutes each day to clean the footpaths outside their own premises and help improve these unsightly situations in our town. There is also a noticeable increase in the disposal of domestic waste at various locations around town and we would appreciate any information from the public in identifying the offenders and stop this practise as soon as possible. Milltown Bridge. A meeting has been arranged for Monday next May15th in the Pitch and Putt Clubhouse at 7.30p.m.to discuss the suggestions of improving the SAFETY ASPECTS for all road users at Milltown Bridge. The huge increase in all types of motorised, cycling and pedestrian traffic in this area over the past few years merits the
enhancement of safety for all concerned and a few achievable suggestions have been received particularly from people who had bad personal experiences in this location. Parking. The Business Chamber again appeal to business proprietors and their staff to help the traffic congestion by parking their respective vehicles during the peak hours at locations outside the main town centre. This small effort would free up a few hundred spaces each day and greatly help improve the current parking problem at least in the short term. N.E.W.K.D. A Book-Keeping and Accounts One Day Workshop will be held in the NEWKD offices in Cooleen on Thursday May 18th from 10a.m. to 4p.m. and prior booking is essential by contacting 0667142788. People applying for the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance should also contact this office for appointments and advice on such entitlements. THINK BEFORE YOU FLUSH. Dingle has been chosen as one of 10 towns in Ireland to promote the Think Before You Flush promotion this year. Basically research has shown that a huge proportion of items big and small are incorrectly flushed down our toilets each day often blocking the systems and causing water contamination in many cases. Dingle has been selected due to the huge increase in tourist numbers over the past few years and accommodation providers are particularly asked to take an active part in the programme. Further details are available elsewhere in this edition. Walk. Close to 500 people completed the Darkness Into Light Walk in Dingle on Saturday Morning last in beautiful conditions despite the testing crisp wind from the Conor Pass. The organisers wish to thank the loyal participants, the business outlets who sponsored loads of food and drinks, the Marina Centre for the use of their premises, the Gardaí and all who helped make the event another great occasion for a very worthy cause. Weight Training Do’s and Don’ts Eddie O’Grady There is so much stuff online these days with social media etc. from people promoting the newest supplements to the newest maddest training routine. Here are some tips from a qualified Nutritionist and Physical Therapist based on research, and on what I have seen from clients coming through my doors over the years. 1. A lot of supplements are a complete waste of money. You need to know how to search for the studies surrounding them to properly evaluate them. ‘’Google Scholar’’(a subsite of Google) is a good start, but be careful, some studies are industry funded or poorly done, and you have to learn how to spot this. If you cannot find the compound in a ‘’Google Scholar’’ search , most likely no proper scientific studies have been done using this compound, ‘’except the ones the supplement companies will mention without quoting references’’. They will show you lovely little charts, but not one scientific reference, or else they will reference studies that briefly mention one of their ingredients and theorise on possible benefits. The educated well-read athlete knows you cannot beat a unprocessed balanced diet as your best performance aid. If you believe supplements are so good, try living on them alone for a few days and see how well your training goes. Real food - you cannot beat it. 2. Footballers, runners, cyclists etc. and protein after training. If you eat a balanced diet, it is unlikely you need protein supplementation in these sports. What you should be concentrating on is refuelling your glycogen levels with carbs. This will aid your recovery much more. Also in weight training, carbs = power and strength. Granted you need a bit more protein, but carbs preserve the protein in your body and allow the body to reuse that protein. A lot of people don’t realise your body reuses a lot of its protein. The body is a pretty efficient machine. If your just taking loads of protein and very few carbs, yes you’ll get lean but you will limit your strength gains, you’ll feel like crap, and you are just using all that protein as an inefficient, expensive energy source. 3. Warm up well and keep warm. When the muscle is warm it performs optimally. Years ago in lifting we used to wait maybe 10 minutes between heavy sets to try and replicate a heavy lift. Injuries can result with this type of training, if the muscle cools down and is then pushed to the limit. I have seen similar stuff happen where a team stay outside at half time during cold weather. It is often the team that goes inside that comes back out to win. Get inside, keep warm. Keeping the muscle warm is vital for performance. 4. Poor exercise form. Sometimes people have not been shown exercises correctly but sometimes it is an ego trip. Elite powerlifters and weightlifters never sacrifice form to get a lift. For maximal muscle adaptation you need to apply maximal stress to a muscle during training, so why flip through some of that stress with a cheat 34 West Kerry Live
movement. Why go to the gym and not maximise your time. Up and down slow full range of movements make the muscle work concentrically and eccentrically and will provide the best development. With this type of training it is less likely you will tear a muscle because the movement is so controlled. Poor form may not initially show as an injury, but later in life may present as a discogenic disorder(ie. back pain), joint injuries, or ligament/tendon/muscle tears due to wear over the years from poor form. 5. It is not necessary to spend hours in the gym. Many knowledgeable top bodybuilders and athletes hit the gym brief and hard. If you are in the gym for hours you would want to be consuming 1,000s of extra calories to recover. Even then you are still more likely to be overtraining and going nowhere. Food and rest is as important if not more so than the training itself. Many bodybuilders you see in videos on the internet are taking massive doses of anabolic steroids and growth hormone etc. along with huge calorific diets. This allows them train for hours. Some may not be even in the gym all those hours, but as it is popular on social media to show that you are a ‘’beast’’, they may promote this image of themselves. Gradual progression in strength is what you want. You go for a personal best every couple of weeks, not in every workout. Most of the time your training 80% to 90%. Think of it this way, if you take a run at a jump, you’ll jump further. Stimulate the muscle with basic compound exercises done with correct form. 6. For footballers etc, it is best to use some basic overall strength exercises twice a week for say 30 minutes properly, done to give a gradual increase in strength and improve performance. In peak competition season once a week weight training can be enough to maintain strength and prevent overtraining. Exercises like squat, hamstring curl, deadlift, bench press, press behind neck, chins, bent over rowing are a group of exercises that work the whole body. Don’t be doing half squats, this causes quad dominance and increases the risk of hamstring injuries. Core is also worked by all the above exercise so you don’t need pilates or anything. In fact pilates was developed as a method to aid recovery from disc disorders. It was never meant to be for athletes. If you look up the research you will see an exercise like the squat done properly is generally way more beneficial to an athlete. Some GAA trainers don’t believe in much upper body training. Upper body training is important so as to protect the player against injury to upper body as a result of falls, tackles etc. Think of shoulder dislocations, AC joint injuries. Also just because you get stronger doesn’t have to mean you get bulkier and slower. Done properly weight training should increase power, strength and speed. Again here the type of diet also comes into play in keeping bodyweight increases under control.
protein. 8. Stretching and maintaining/increasing flexibilty is also important. You need to stretch both muscle and fascia(the protective sheath surrounding the muscle). Static stretching and careful assisted stretching along with the odd deep tissue massage is great for this. Foam rolling will never come near in results achieved. Static stretching crosses over joints, the same as do muscles, and that is what helps make it so effective. A good example of how muscle flexibility affects performance is say with tight hamstrings in a runner. If the hamstrings are tight, the runner’s stride becomes shorter, hence less ground is covered with each stride, resulting in less speed over distance. Static stretching is used after training rather than before. If you use it before, you may over-prime the muscle stretch receptors leading to spasm during training, as the body thinks you have overdone it, as in overstretched. When done after training the stretch receptors get time to relax down again before your next session. ‘’Dynamic stretching’’ is probably the best type of pre-event stretching. Basically it is a posh term for warming up. You try to warm the body up in all the range of movements it will be using during training/ play etc. Finally, research the evidence properly for the things you do in training. Don’t just believe everything you are told blindly, question things. Above are my opinions from my years of experience and research. I am sure some people will disagree with them. However if you research things carefully you will see a lot of what I say is true. Have a good weekend.
7. Overtraining or increasing training volume/ intensity is a killer in so many ways. It dramatically increases the risk of injury, can lead to burn out, and can even lead to ill-health due to increased cortisol levels in the body. Again ensuring you have enough carbs in your diet Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at Ré Nua Clinic to replenish glycogen stores in the body is so & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) important for recovery, yet so often overlooked because of the supplement industry’s push on
Killorglin Rowing Club Castleconnell Sprints Regatta
TRY OUR WILD ATLANTIC PLATTER
Why not enjoy our soon to be famous (L to R, back) Michael G Fleming (coach), Katie Boyle, Mara Treacy, Sean Houlihan, Airida Mateviciute, Molly OGrady, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Tyther. Kneeling from left: Alanna Dolan, Emma Houlihan. Killorglin rowers came out on top with eight wins at the Castleconnell Sprints Regatta on Saturday, the 6th of May. The event took place on the River Shannon over a 500 metre 5-lane buoyed course with races taking place every 5 minutes. The first win went to Laoise Murphy and Airida Mateviciute in the Women’s Junior 12 double. The girls took a lead with three boat lengths advantage over two Castleconnell crews. The Women’s Junior 18 quad was next. The crew of Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Molly O’Grady, Anna Tyther and Katie Boyle coxed by Mara Treacy showed a very strong and dominant performance winning with half of a boat length lead over Workmen’s Rowing Club in second. Sean Houlihan won the Men’s Junior 18 single scull, taking a break from the books in preparation for his Leaving Cert examination and making a statement that he is the one to watch in 2018. Sean has another season in this age category. Killorglin girls took all Junior 16 sculling titles. The first win went to Rhiannon O’Donoghue in the Women’s Junior 16 single. Rhiannon and Anna Tyther teamed up in the Women’s Junior 16 double, winning the race convincingly. Mara Treacy and Molly O’Grady joined the pair in the Women’s Junior 16 quad, bagging a third medal in this age category. Airida Mateviciute took to the water later in the afternoon in the Women’s Junior 14 single winning the race against much older competitors. Airida’s length and feel for the boat pays dividends. The Women’s Junior 15 quad of Alanna Dolan, Airida Mateviciute, Emma Houlihan, Katie Boyle coxed by Mara Treacy were also victorious. The girls had a two boat lengths advantage over Lee, Carlow, Fermoy and Colaiste Iognaid boat clubs. Michael Sheahan and Nathan Houlihan raced their first regatta performing well in the Men’s Club double and the Men’s Club quad joined by Sean Houlihan and Michael O’Connor. Orla McCarthy, Eimear O’Donovan, Molly O’Grady and Emma Houlihan also raced well in the Women’s Club quad missing out on a win by a short margin. Walking The Dingle Way And what a weekend it was, on the May bank holiday, around 200 walkers signed up for the Annual, 3 day, Camino Walk of The Dingle Way starting in Tralee on Friday and ending in Dingle on Sunday. The demand for accommodation in the local villages along the way was huge and since it was the bank holiday weekend and Féile na Bealtaine was on in Dingle, all B/B’s were filled in the locality. All walkers enjoyed themselves tremendously and are looking forward to next year. Well done to the organisers. The Great Annascaul Walk The weather took on a turn for the better for the Great Annascaul Walk and after a heavy nights rain, the sun shone brightly on the large group of Annascaul GAA walkers and friends who took on the Dingle Way from Camp to Annascaul and the mountain climb also on the Bank holiday weekend. Thank You - Annascaul Gaa and Coiste na nÓg and Annascaul Ladies club would like to thank everybody who participated in The Great Annascaul Walk 2017. We wish to thank Annascaul Walks for their guidance and information during the organisation process, and their leadership on the day and helping everyone to safely complete route A. We would also to thank Ashes Butchers Annascaul for the catering, and the freshly cooked Annascaul Sausages, Genie Farrel for the lovely soup and everyone who provided baking. work on some sections of the walk which were very bad underfoot. And it must be said that without the goodwill of the landowners and the farmers along the way, this walking trail would not be possible. And they all deserve our thanks and acknowledgement. If you have any query or any suggestion or you want to join the Dingle Way Committee - Please Telephone John Ahern – 087 653 8548. Vintage Opel/Vauxhall Cars And Coffee With A Difference A wonderful vintage event took place on Sunday 7th May at Mike and Bernadette Fitzgerald’s The Junction Bar, Camp. The colourful entourage of vintage cars visited some of the fabulous scenic areas on The Wild Atlantic Way and the Dingle Gold Coast route on the Dingle Peninsula. A great day was had by all enthusiasts and friends. Defibrillator TrainingDefibrillator refresher training will be delivered on Saturday 13th May 2.30 – 3.30 p.m. Old School, Camp. The more training you have on CPR, the more confident you will become ! And just this past week in Kenmare an incident occurred in one of the local town bars and two American visitors confident in the use of a defibrillator were there on the spot and may have saved a life ! In the next few months, during our busy tourist season, visitors will arrive here from all over the world and competency in CPR is something that we must all consider ! If you can spare one hour on Saturday 13th May, 2.30 – 3.30 p.m, you will be very welcome in the Old School ! Thank you ! Glamping In Camp And Tommy Dowling tells me that the Glamping site in Camp village will be open in the next few weeks ! And the weather couldn’t be better for a Glamping experience in Camp ! And airbnb and guesthouse accommodation provision is going great in the area, home from home thats what the tourist is looking for, a personal experience and its being provided here in Camp and indeed throughout the peninsula. And great food in local restaurants and shop local too ! Here’s to a great tourist season in the Dingle Peninsula. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine !

Hats Off To Putting
Timthriall Nua le
Colin Sheerin The art of putting remains one of the elusive mysteries, resisting all modern advances to provide a thoroughgoing challenge to the golfer. The twin tides of popularity and money have made their mark on golf and as a result the game is much changed. Driven by the sports products companies the focus is on equipment and the modern golfer has been fully encouraged to blame his tools. New technologies have made it easier to master the long game. New drivers, forged of space age materials, bear little resemblance to their predecessors. Indeed even a driver of only twenty years ago looks like a relic. The new drivers are much more forgiving so you are not so punished for your bad habits or put another way, you do not need as much skill to hit a good drive. So now it seems every novice golfer is crushing drives three hundred yards and they have the golf course at their mercy. But whilst the price of individual clubs has been careful marketed up and up and up, the cold hard facts are that handicaps have not been tumbling down and down and down. I hear the average golf handicap in the Ireland is 17 and only 11% of golfers play off single figures. Driving remains for show. On the scorecard a six inch tap-in is equal to a three hundred yard drive and it seems the penicillin of technology is toothless against the maladies of the short game. That is not to say that club makers have not embraced putting. They have, and how. Like drivers, putters are a separate purchase now and will probably cost about half as much as your whole set of irons set you back. There are endless technologies, designs and variations in putters all promising improvement for the struggling masses but putting and indeed the rest of the short game is not an industrial exercise, it is an artistic endeavour. You can learn to paint by numbers but your creation will be an accountant’s approach to aesthetics. Flat and unrewarding, it may offer some improvement but it is not the answer and is an unsatisfying approach. To thrive on the green you must embrace the other parts of your brain and the best way to do this is to start with your hat. If you are selecting your hat based on how it makes you look, who else wears that style or how waterproof and functional it is, you are in the wrong head altogether. Your hat should be impractical and if possible, approaching outrageous. It is about how the hat makes you feel. Being able to step out in a hat that makes you feel ostentatious is a vital and useful skill. You’re Irish so you don’t want to show off but your hat needs to make a statement. It needs to testify to your mental resilience, your faith in yourself, your judgement and your approach (all also things you need to become a wonderful putter).

Backing yourself before you even stand on the first tee is far better than any warm up or any other prescripted nonsense. You are an artist after all and how you create is up to you. I guarantee that every putt you take in a beret or a cowboy hat has a vastly increased chance of making it and, more importantly, will make you happy. Improving the intangibles requires an indirect approach so please do not underestimate how vital your hat selection is.
