Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 13th June will be “Certain Women” . Exploring a handful of intersecting lives across Montana, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Michelle Williams as three strong-willed women who strive to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest. The stories of the lives of ordinary people are told with empathy and understanding for the everyday challenges all round us in a film of beautifully executed storytelling. The following week on Tuesday 20th June the feature will be the British war - comedy drama “Their Finest”. Set in London in 1940 with the nation bowed down by war, the British ministry turns to propaganda films to boost morale at home. Realizing their films could use “a woman’s touch,” the ministry hires Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) as a scriptwriter in charge of writing the female dialogue. Although her artist husband looks down on her job, Catrin’s natural flair quickly gets her noticed by cynical, witty lead scriptwriter Buckley. Catrin and Buckley set out to make an epic feature film based on the Dunkirk rescue starring the gloriously vain, former matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy). As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and their colorful cast and crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation 4 West Kerry Live

Registration Of Succession Farm Partnerships This scheme, which was developed by the Department in conjunction with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners is designed to facilitate formalized succession planning within farming enterprises through tax incentives and structured asset transference built in to the succession partnership agreement. Under the scheme, partnerships on the Department’s register may apply to join the succession farm partnership register. Partnerships on this register can benefit from an incentive of € 5,000 for up to five years, during the Succession Agreement term, until the identified successor(s) reaches the age of 40. The scheme is designed to encourage the successor to become invested in the enterprise as early as possible to be fully ready to take over when the time is right. It is strongly advised that anybody considering entering into a succession farm partnership take independent legal and financial advice. This Succession Farm Partnership scheme is part of the Government’s commitment to Rural Ireland. Assessing Suitability Of Grass For Harvesting As Silage There are two tests commonly carried out on fresh grass samples taken in by farmers. These are (a) Nitrates test and (b) Sugar test. The Nitrates test is carried out using a test strip with colour changing to indicate nitrate level. The sugar test is carried out using a refractometer to assess sugar levels in the juice of the grass. Both of these tests are indicative and should not be regarded as being as accurate as a laboratory test. Most of the commercial laboratories that test soil samples and silage samples also do Nitrates and Sugar tests on a same day basis. Sugar content of the grass is critically important for the process of ensiling. Grass sugars are converted by bacteria into Lactic Acid. As the process of conversion progresses, the PH in the silage falls rapidly due to the build-up of the Lactic Acid until eventually it gets too acid even for the bacteria doing the conversion and at a PH of around 4 things start to stabilise and will remain that way for as long as oxygen is excluded from the silage. So, the higher the grass sugar levels at cutting the better the preservation. Grass sugar levels should be at 3% of grass juice or above before advising the farmer to cut. It is not uncommon to see levels below or above that. High nitrate levels in grass increase the buffering capacity of the grass and make it more difficult to get PH down. High nitrate is often seen after spreading heavy applications of N fertilizer and not allowing enough time for the fertilizer N to be absorbed by the crop. As a rule of thumb, the grass crop utilises about 2.5 kgs of N fertilizer per day (2 units). For example, if you spread 80 units of N fertilizer, you would need at least 40 days to get this fully absorbed into the crop system. If you have poor growing conditions, this time could be longer. If your grass nitrate test is reading high, the most likely cause is that not enough time has elapsed from the spreading date. The difficulty for consultants advising farmers at this time of year is that if a farmer presents a grass sample showing high nitrates, the traditional advice has been to wait a few days. However, the advice from Padraig O’Kiely of the Grange Research Station is that waiting that few days can result in a drop of several DMD points with resultant losses in the feeding value of the silage. The staff at Grange do not test for nitrates at all but rather they concentrate completely on sugar levels. Their advice now is that if sugar levels are 3% or over in the juice, we should not sacrifice DMD in order to get nitrate levels reduced. On the other hand, if Sugar levels are below 3% and Nitrate levels are showing high, then it would be prudent to delay harvest until the sugar levels come up. Minister Creed congratulates Burren Project on winning EU LIFE Nature Award The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, has congratulated the Burren-Life Project on its success this week in jointly winning a prestigious EU LIFE Nature award in Brussels, following a public vote. The Project was victorious in the Nature and Biodiversity category. The award was presented by Environmental Commissioner Vella to Brendan Dunford and Sharon Parr of the Burren Team. A total of 15 projects were selected as finalists for the keenly contested awards by an expert jury, who looked at their long-term sustainability, communication potential and broader impact on a national, European or global level. Projects were also assessed for innovation, transferabil10 West Kerry Live

ity, environmental benefits and improvement of conservation status. There is a long tradition of farming in the Burren which began over 6000 years ago and the Burren Programme is, with the Department’s support, now working to ensure that that tradition continues into the future and that the unique biodiversity of the Burren will be protected for generations to come. There are currently 320 farmers in the Programme and a third tranche will invite applications before the end of 2017. The overall target for the new Burren Programme is to attract some 450 farmers into the scheme. Official Strawberry Season Starts Pat Clarke’s strawberry farm, in Co. Meath was the site of the launch of this year’s National Strawberry week, which in its 7th year, runs from the 5th to 12th June. This year, more than 7,700 tonnes of top quality strawberries will be picked by Irish strawberry growers, with the vast majority of these being picked between now and the end of August, supporting over 1000 jobs. Strawberry production is one of the real success stories in Irish horticulture with a very strong market for the high-quality fruit produced by Irish growers. Irish growers have reacted positively to this demand and have expanded production and improved technical efficiency delivering a top-quality product. The strawberry is the most popular soft fruit eaten in Ireland. In 2016 output at farm gate level for the Irish soft fruit sector was valued at an estimated €38m with strawberries accounting for over 90% of this. Ireland’s strawberry industry has developed significantly in recent years from a situation where largely field based production meant harvesting was very much concentrated in the traditional June-July period and much of the crop was destined for low value processing. While production still peaks in summer, Irish strawberry growers have made significant investments on their farms to extend the season significantly and now produce top quality fruit from early April right through to midNovember largely using polythene based protective cropping structures, in an industry that accounts for 1,000 rural jobs. 2017 BPS Preliminary Checks Commence Preliminary checks for online Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) applicants have now commenced. DAFM will be notifying online BPS applicants of any non-compliance in the areas of overclaims, dual claims, and overlaps which arise from these preliminary checks. Applicants will then be given an opportunity to rectify any non-compliance online by 19th June. There will be no penalty or reduction where such non-compliance is fully rectified by that date. These preliminary checks will provide very real benefits for farmers applying online for this essential support and help to facilitate the processing of the maximum number of applicants for payment. Where a preliminary check identifies an overclaim, dual claim or overlap on a BPS application, a notification will issue online to the farmer / advisor in question. Where a farmer is registered for text message alerts, a text will issue informing the farmer that a preliminary check notification has issued. The farmer / advisor will then have the opportunity to rectify any non-compliance without penalty by the deadline of 19th June. Preliminary checks are essentially pre-checks for online BPS applications to notify applicants of any non-compliance in the areas of overclaims, dual claims, and overlaps. Preliminary checks can only be applied to online BPS applicants. As the Department continues to progress towards the EU regulatory requirement of 100% online BPS application by 2018, these checks add a further benefit to farmers who apply online and increase the efficiency with which BPS applications can be processed. Where a farmer has applied online through an advisor, the advisor will receive notification via his BPS online system, where a preliminary check has identified a dual claim, overclaim or overlap. Farmers who have applied through an advisor will also get a text message alert where they are signed up for this service. A preliminary check can only be responded to once. In each instance, the farmer / advisor will be given the opportunity to either amend his/her original claim to take account of the preliminary check or to maintain the original claim. There will be instances where it is valid to maintain the original claim – for example, in the instance of a possible overclaim identified, where an area of scrub has been removed and brought back into agricultural use with a resultant increase in eligible area. Where a response to a preliminary check is sufficient to fully rectify the issue at hand, no penalty will apply. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Top Notch Tips to Combat Exam Stress! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Students, whether the work was done in the last week, month or year, your exam performance comes down to what happens on the day. While it is not the perfect system to evaluate someone’s level of academic competence, it is happening now and hopefully you are well prepared and ready for it! Stress is a natural response to the demands of sitting exams but too much stress and high anxiety levels can have a negative effect on getting what is in your head onto the paper in front of you within the allotted time. Our stress response has been with us for as long as we have lived on the planet and is probably the reason why we are still here, however, the triggers for our “fight or flight” activity and our ability to recover has changed dramatically since we first needed to fight or flee. What was deemed to be a physical threat (real stress) to our survival millions of years ago such as wild animals and natural disasters were rare events allowing us time to process and recover from stressful times. Nowadays, our stress response is being constantly activated by perceived stresses, such as exams, deadlines, mayhem and madness with little time for recovery or repair. This has seen stress-related illnesses and anxiety rates soar, ironically leaving us more vulnerable to a real threat to our survival! It is not too late to support a healthy stress response and the following tips may result in clearer thinking, sharper problem solving and excellent recall during exam time. Magnesium is often referred to as Nature’s tranquilizer – not the kind that would knock a horse, but interestingly abundant in the grass they eat! For us, magnesium is lacking in our diets yet is in high demand during times of stress. It has the ability to relax tense muscles, to dilate blood vessels for easier flow of oxygen to the brain and has a calming effect on neurotransmission, allowing for clearer thinking and rational thinking. Magnesium is found in all leafy vegetables such as dark lettuce leaves, chard and spinach. Also, high in pumpkin seeds and almonds. Supplements can deliver a high therapeutic dose of magnesium in times of stress and are more bio-available in powdered form as magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate. B- vitamins, are a family of water-soluble vitamins that work together to perform many functions in the body and vitally important for the nervous system. Again, this group of nutrients have been refined out of the modern diets yet are needed by the bucket load in times of high stress. Vitamin B5 is of particular importance for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands and the balanced production of stress hormones. They are typically found in fresh wholefoods – wholegrains, lentils, pulses, lean red meat, fish and liver. Enhance the availability of B vitamins by combining these foods with enzyme-rich salads, steamed greens, watercress or beansprouts. Viridian Supplement High-5 B-Complex is a good add-on to a healthy diet during these stressful times.

timely tonic can be consumed hot or cooled, alternating with fresh water throughout the day as hydration is also critical to exam performance and concentration. Another amino acid, glycine, plays an important role in the sleep cycle. Sleep allows for recovery and repair after a stress event such as exams and also allows the brain to process information making it easier to access and recall when needed. Glycine, while available as a supplement, is easily derived from natural food sources such as meat, fish and poultry. Bone broth is an excellent source as the glycine, ready to be absorbed from the liquid stock. Vitamin C from fresh, raw fruits and vegetables helps to replenish adrenal glands and give them a pick-me-up when feeling exhausted. Snacking on fresh strawberries, citrus fruits and salad vegetables is a sure-way to keep a steady supply of this vital nutrient. Also needed for the absorption of iron, of which low levels can be attributed to fatigue and tiredness. The last thing you want to add to your stress levels is more stress! Junk food, caffeine, stimulants, poor sleep, the news, social media and poor planning are the kind of stressors that can put you at risk of “overload” and anxiety, which will impede your exam performance. Between exams and during down times, take time to recover and repair in a calm and quiet environment. Preparing good food, proper sleep, time spent outdoors in nature may seem like a waste of valuable revision time yet is necessary for you to take advantage of the heightened clarity that comes with a well-managed stress response! Best of luck to all students sitting exams, go n-eirí sibh go léir! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat St, Dingle 066 9151360. Tales From The Gáirdín Babs Spillane Babs Spillane (19yrs) married Leo O’Flaherty (25 yrs) in Cloghane Church in January 1959 with the reception in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee. A friend of ours played accordian and all the songs and waltzes we loved. My legs were broken from dancing but himself wasn’t the best dancer. Luckily I had a spare - his brother was a great dancer! T’was January when we got married - I married him for the heat! Neighbours, relatives & friends attended. There was an ol’ cake and my brother in law cut it with me as my husband was very shy.

Pork Wellington with Mushrooms, Mash Potato, Broccoli & Parsley Butter Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

heat for two minutes and stir them. Take them off the heat and use a masher to mash them. Add some butter, salt and pepper. Keep this warm until needed.

Sometimes a pork fillet can be bland and dry, so if you take the pork fillet and do a little work with it you can turn it in to something really nice. In this recipe, I have wrapped it in mushrooms and pastry just as you would with a beef wellington. I have added a little spinach too to give it a little colour. A large pork fillet with the addition of the pastry, mushrooms, spinach and served with mash and broccoli should feed three people. If you are not a fan of mushrooms or want to try something else you can roast some aubergine and garlic and then purĂŠe them.

For the pork

Ingredients 1pork fillet 200g mushrooms, finely chopped large bunch of spinach, washed 1 onion, cut into small dice some thyme leaves, finely chopped 1 roll of puff pastry 1 egg, for egg-wash 5-6 potatoes, peeled and cut into half 1 broccoli, cut into florets large bunch of parsley, chopped 1 knob of butter salt and pepper rapeseed oil Method For the potatoes Put the potatoes in a pot, cover with cold water and add a pinch of salt. Let them cook for about 25 minutes or until you can easily pierce them with a fork. Strain the water and put the potatoes back in the pot and place over the

To serve Cut the pork into 3 pieces. Put some mash on a plate and add the broccoli. Put the pork over the broccoli and then pour over some parsley butter sauce.

Preheat the oven to 180ÂşC. Put a pan on to heat. Season the pork with salt and pepper. When the pan is hot add a little oil and put the pork on the pan. Turn it after 3 minutes and let it cook for another 2-3 minutes. Take it out of the pan and place it on a tray.

Enjoy!!!

Meanwhile put a pot over medium heat, add some oil then the chopped onion and thyme and let this cook for about 3 minutes. Add a knob of butter and the mushrooms to the pan. Cook this for another 5 minutes. The mushrooms should be soft at this stage. Add the spinach and cook it for about 3 minutes. Roll out the pastry, and brush well with the egg wash. Spread the onion, mushroom and spinach mixture along the pastry keeping a space around the edge. Place the pork in the centre and fold over the pastry. Use a fork to seal the edges. Place on a tray and put it in the oven. This will need about 25 minutes to cook. Using a thermometer, when it reaches 75ÂşC it is done. Take the pork out of the oven and allow it to rest for about 5-10 minutes. For the broccoli (you can do this while the pork is resting) Put the broccoli into a pot of boiling water. Cook for 3 minutes or so. Strain the water. Add some butter, salt and pepper. For the sauce Melt some butter and add the chopped parsley.

Aon Sceal? Poetry and Storytelling in West Kerry

Paul Duffy At last month’s meeting in Kane’s Bar, Ballyferriter, on Wednesday 17th May we were entertained by our special guest for the night, Wexford poet Maggie Breen. There was a full house for the occasion and all those who attended enjoyed her amazing range of evocative poems, one of which is published at the end of this article. We start off each evening with a couple of tunes or songs, so a special thanks to Paul and Aideen for getting the night off to a great start.

The Cork Examiner July 4th 1860 DINGLE MONDAY MORNING.—One of the Commissioners of fisheries and a clerk or assistant, according to public notice, attended at the Dingle Court-house, last Saturday, and held an enquiry relative to the fishery in Dingle Bay, under the following circumstances:-It appears that the Fishery Commissioners had held an enquiry here in the year '52, on the same subject, namely—a dispute between the Dingle trawl fishermen and the fishermen of Annascaul and several other places to the east, relative to the parts of the bay to which the trawlers should confine themselves for fishing, as it is commonly reported that where they sweep or fish they empty and frighten the fish from that place. The Commissioners then enacted a “bye law” that any trawler, or boat using a trawl net, that would give a sweep or fish to the east of a straight line drawn from Bull's Head at the north and Counnuna at the south side of the bay, would be liable to a certain fine, the amount of which I do not know. I understand that that law was strictly adhered to since—save on very rare occasions. Not long since it appears that the owners of trawlers and their crews here sent up a petition to the Commissioners, praying that they would be pleased to rescind or annul the “bye law,” and give them permission to fish up to Inch Island or at the bottom of the bay. The petition was backed by two magistrates and by the Coast Guard authorities here. The Annascaul fishermen had likewise sent up a memorial, which stated “that the trawlers in Dingle harbour were chiefly the property of magistrates and merchants of the town of Dingle, and praying in a most pitiful manner to have the former bye law kept in full force, so that the trawlers should not interfere with their part of the bay.” Mr. Commissioner Barry in opening the enquiry, explained the purport of the investigation. The petitions and notice of enquiry having been read, there were two men examined and cross-examined by their opponents from both sides, with a most strict scrutiny by Mr. Barry, who held the map of Dingle Bay in his hands while every witness was under examination. To give an outline of their evidence would swell this hasty communication to an undue extent, they were asked so many questions relative to the different modes of fishing used here— the success of each mode of fishing—the class of boats or canoes that are made use of now, also the time of spawning, and many other coguate matters. The greatest difference in their testimony was as to the time of year at which “soles” generally “spawn.”The Dinglemen said that they spawn between the 1st of April and the middle of May, and their opponents said that they spawn in their own place in January and February—a very remarkable conflict of opinion unless it could be accounted for by the difference in the depth of water at the two ends of the bay. It appeared from the evidence given that the Dingle boats fish in from 18 to 25 fathoms of water, and the Annascaul boats in from 5½ to 12 fathoms of water. After a very long examination, Mr. Barry said “that he would lay the evidence before the Commission of which he was a member. What the decision would be, he could not then say—but in due course of time all parties would know the results. During the enquiry, the Rev.James Divine, P.P; of Annascaul, and his curate, the Rev. Mr. M'Carthy, were present, and took a deep interest in the matter. Rev. Mr. Divine cross examined very strictly one of the Dingle witnesses. The Courthouse was full to suffocation, people attended from far and near—as very few along the coast did not feel a personal interest in the investigation. Everything was carried on with due attention and regularity. There are no trawling nets used on the Coast of Kerry in any place that I am aware of, save in Dingle. The Annascaul fishermen generally fish with spillers and trammels or drifting nets; the Brandon men with spillars; the canoes in Dingle with spillars and hand-lines, and the spritsail boats with hand-lines only. At Dunquin and the Blasket Island their principal mode of fishing is with seines. All classes of boats along the coast use herring nets, which is the most beneficial fish that can be caught.

Healing with Herbs

Deirdre Daly Barberry; Berberis vulgaris Parts Used; Bark of the root Family; Berberidacea

In summary barberry is an efficient cleansing herb and doses can be increased gradually to allow the body to adapt to its detoxifying action. If you have emotional and physical stagnation in the body in general or the liver in particular then barberry is the herb for you. Preparation and dosage: Tincture dosage 2-3mls three times daily Decoction 1 teaspoon of the herb in cold water brought to the boil and left to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes and dosage half to one cup daily Or; 1 teaspoon left to soak overnight in cold water and dosage half to one cup daily Safety considerations; Avoid during pregnancy Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner.

I introduced barberry into my herbal tincture collection some months ago and now find that it has become my default herb for liver, spleen and gall bladder problems. I also use this herb in place of goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) due to the similar actions both these herbs possess. The latter herb is a rare herb that has been badly over-harvested in the wild so consideration and caution needs to be taken by herbalists making sure the source is sustainable. Both plants contain berberine, which stimulates immunity by activating the immune system to kill infection in the body. Berberine has shown antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antitumour, amoebicidal and hepaprotective actions. Berberine is found in high concentration in the root bark of barberry and it is the root bark that is used medicinally. Barberry is a thorny, yellow-wooded, shrub with arched hanging pale-green leaves, small yellow flowers and red, berries. Barberry is an excellent liver tonic clearing damp heat and congestion in this organ. It is used for gallstones and gallbladder inflammation and when jaundice occurs due to congestion in the liver. Barberry will also reduce the size of an enlarged spleen, which can result from infection in this lymph gland. Barberry also helps the digestion clearing hot damp conditions in the intestines thereby addressing any stagnant conditions of the upper digestive system, which includes the liver, gall bladder, stomach and intestines. Barberry taken with Red Clover and Cleavers helps clear the lymphatic system and combines well with Dandelion root and Burdock for deep blood cleansing programmes and with Liquorice root to cleanse and tone the bowel. As a liver and gall bladder support herb, barberry together with milk thistle can be very effective in protecting the liver against alcoholism and environmental poisons. Both herbs can be used against hepatitis and to assist liver function in chronic degenerative disease. The berberine in Barberry has remarkable infection fighting properties and studies show it can be effective against staphylococci and streptococci, salmonella, dysentery urinary tract infections and candida. Barberry is an excellent digestive and liver support herb clearing stagnation as toxic damp heat conditions accumulate in these systems. Keeping the liver healthy much like the lymph system, which I have talked about before, is crucial. A sluggish liver is responsible for many illnesses and low grade health problems such as fatigue, skin problems, low mood and general malaise. Barberry is one if the best liver herbs we have available to us and ranks 24 West Kerry Live

Local Looped Walk

Siúlóid Chuas na nEighe Clochar, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh Easy way-marked way (Blue arrows on a white background) Difficulty: Easy Length/ Fad: 1.8 miles / 2.9 km Duration: 1 hour or less / Am 1 uair Overview: This is a cliff top walk of under two miles which begins and finishes at the car park above Clogher Beach about eight miles west of Dingle. It takes in spectacular sea views and the surrounding countryside and headlands. The walk is flat and has three or four stiles. Cuas na nEighe Walk The walk starts in the public car park above Clogher Beach. This car park offers stunning views of Inis Tuaisceart, especially on a stormy day, and also acts as a trailhead for the magically named Cosán Chuas na nEighe which is situated between Ballyferriter & Dunquin. Walk back up the road from the car park and turn left at the Blue & White markers. The view as you walk along the cliff above the beach of An Tiaracht and Inis Tuaisceart is stunning. Along the cliff are loose stones of different colours and shapes. This section is called Faill na Saor.. Further on is Poll na gCaorach (blowhole) and Poll na Tóirní and Cuas na Nao (a reference to a type of boat pre-dating the naomhógs). Continuing northwards and with Ceann Sibéal towering over you to the left, a little gravel beach comes into view below you, Cuaisín na Miongán Buí, (inlet of the yellow periwinkles). A little further on is a little slipway, Cé Bhaile an Chalaidh. For the final part turn right and follow a track back westwards to the Ballyferriter/Dunquin road (R559), and take in the views on a short walk back to the carpark and beach. This is a wonderful walk and suitable for practically everyone. Take time to go down to the beach and on the right hand side look for the approx 400 million year old fossils, clearly visible on the rocks and cliffs by the beach. Tips: Wear good foot gear and bring rain gear as the weather changes quickly

Probably the most iconic structure on the Dingle Peninsula, Gallarus Oratory has stood overlooking Smerwick Harbour for centuries. Made completely from local stone it is constructed in a fashion known as corbel vaulting which gives it the appearance of an upturned boat. The cut stones are set with their edges angled inward by a small amount as the wall rises. The stones are also slightly angled upwards allowing rainwater to run off with the structure’s interior remaining dry throughout it’s existence. Standing inside the 4.8 metres by 3 metre interior is to step outside of the modern world into a perfectly and beautifully intact relic of the distant past. Several archeological artifacts are to be found on the grounds of the Oratory Outside including is cross-inscribed stone

An Tiaracht Lighthouse

An Tiaracht (Inishtearaght - The Western Island) is one of the Blasket Islands which lie off the Western tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The island is inhospitable with two steep pinnacles rising to 349 feet and 656 feet, joined by a saddle and a more rounded peak of 597 feet. In March 1846 Captain Wolf of HM Coastguard recommended lights on the south, south west, and west coasts of Ireland, and mentioned Foze Rocks off the Dingle Peninsula among other locations. In 1863 the Inspecting Committee accompanied by Captain Sullivan of the Board of Trade and a committee from Trinity House inspected the Foze Rocks. Trinity House maintained that the rocks were the best position claiming that they had built lighthouses on equally as exposed rocks. The Ballast Board held on to their preference for An Tiaracht and in September 1863 after much correspondence the Board of Trade directed the Ballast Board to erect a lighthouse there. Another year went by before legal possession was obtained. The island belonged to the Earl of Cork; a Miss Hussey also had an interest. In the meantime the Ballast Board’s consultant engineer, Mr C.P. Cotton, reported that a quantity of rock would have to be removed to form a platform for the lighthouse and dwellings, and steps would have to be cut to make landings both north and south. He stated that this work would probably be carried out during 1864-65. In January 1864 an ex Trinity House steam tug Bishop was repaired and used to convey materials, men, and provisions from Dingle to the rock. Mr Cotton visited the rock in April 1864 and surveyed a possible site for the lighthouse, stating that the western peak was 349 feet above high water and a site at 240 feet could be obtained without difficulty. The dwellings would be on the south side of the peak at 263 feet, 90 yards from the light, with a covered approach if necessary. Landings and steps should be constructed first before the platforms for the lighthouse and dwellings. Mr Cotton reported again in April 1865 that men who had spent the previous summer and winter on the rock had formed landing places and approaches and blasted away sides of rock. The quarry men had cut into the western side at a level of 264 feet for a distance of 50 feet and Inishvickillane and Inishtooskert would soon be opened up. The rock which was in good sound order could be dressed well for good desirable building stone. This can be seen on the unpainted portion of the tower, the rest being painted white. When it was impossible to work at the west side of the peak the men moved over to the south preparing the site for the dwelling. During the summer of 1865 the boilers of the Bishop had to be repaired so a hooker (sailing boat) belonging to John Flaherty of Dingle was used.

Photo: Noel O’Neill 28 West Kerry Live

The men working on the rock threatened to strike in 1866 unless their wages were increased. Masons and stonecutters wanted 4d per day to their 5/- per day and plasterers 6d to their 3/6. Their request was granted without hesitation. By 1868 progress was fairly well advanced and tenders for iron work were secured by Edmundson of Dublin. The Board also approved their tender for the cast iron ladder, blocking, balcony, and railings which was £19 higher than that of Chance Bros of Birmingham but the Board of Trade, which was familiar with Chance’s work, insisted on their quotation being selected. Chance Bros also supplied the first order holophotal light showing a flash every one and a half minutes. Before being installed into Inishtearaght it was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1869. Towards the end of 1869 the Inspector presented a draft Notice to Mariners stating that the light would be exhibited on 4th May 1870 and that at the same time Skelligs Upper Lighthouse would be discontinued. In fact the light was lit on 1st May, three days earlier. The two Keepers, with their families, lived on the rock. It was reported that on the 5th January 1890 during a severe thunderstorm the middle peak was struck by lightning and scattered a large quantity of rock. A request in 1896 from the Keepers that the station be made relieving was sympathetically received by the Commissioners and, although the Keepers offered to pay their own lodgings until dwellings were constructed, sanction was obtained to lodge the Keepers of both Skelligs and An Tiaracht on Valentia Island from December 1896. A fine terrace of eight two storey houses was built behind Knightstown and occupied towards the end of 1900 or soon after. On the 12th September 1913 one of the Assistant Keepers fell to his death over the cliff whilst catching goats for milking. Compensation was eventually paid but a remark was made by the Commissioners that the goats were the Board’s property and it was up to the Keepers to look after them. A rock fall at the east landing caused it to be officially abandoned in April 1914. It had not been used for the previous five years. On 6th April 1988 the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation and the Keepers were withdrawn from the station. The station was placed in the care of an Attendant and the aids to navigation were monitored via a telemetry link from Dun Laoghaire. Subsequently the inclined railway was decommissioned and the derricks removed. Courtesy of the Commissioners for Irish Lights www.irishlights.com

The Geological Heritage of West Kerry Inch: a geological conundrum and more than an inch of sand

Patrick Wyse Jackson

rows circular burrows called Beaconites and these were produced by lungfish or arthropods. These trace fossils preserve the activity of their maker but not the animal itself. The finest units of this group of rocks are reddish sandstones some of which have ripples on their surface. Geomorphologists are interested in more recent aspects of the landscape and would be found studying the stretch of sand and the sand dune systems that project southwards for approximately 5 km into Castlemaine Harbour. Inch is one of the finest examples of a feature called a Spit. Together with those opposite at Cromane and Rosbehy, these spits hem in the course of the River Maine that flowed through the Castlemaine valley before it was flooded as sea levels rose after the Ice Age. Sand built up into a series of dune ridges and today the area supports a diverse flora. These dune systems are rather fragile and sand may get moved about in storms and new ridges of dune developed. A recent study has shown that the oldest dunes date back some 600 years.

Inch is a very popular locality for surfers, walkers, and holiday-makers, but for geologists and geomorphologists it is a special significant place. Geologists would be found studying the solid nocks at the northern end of the beach and along the roadside overlooking the area. Here the Inch Conglomerate, an unusual and rare sedimentary rock, can be seen here. Conglomerates are coarse rocks containing rounded fragments of older rocks that have been cemented together. A close look at this rock reveals cobbles of the pale-coloured metamorphic rocks gneiss and schist which have been dated to between 1.38 and 3.34 billion years old. These very ancient rocks were exposed at the Earth’s surface between 398 and 435 million years ago during the Devonian period and formed a mountainous area. The question facing geologists is: ‘where precisely was the source of the cobbles?’. Erosion has completely removed this past land area, but by examination of the arrangement of the rocks and the roundness of the cobbles one can be fairly confident that eroded material was transported by rovers some distance from the south towards the north where it was deposited as alluvial fans and turned into the rock we see today. As well as the conglomerate, some sandy units contain distinctive bur-

Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society/Cumann Seandálaíochta is Staire Chiarraí Isabel Bennett 50 bliain ó shin is an bhliain seo is ea a bunaíodh Cumann Seandálaíochta is Staire Chiarraí chun ábhar fé stair agus ársaíocht an chontae a bhailiú is a chaomhnú, chun go ndéanfaí taifead air is chun go ndéanfaí staidéar air. Tá roinnt mhaith don obair sin á dhéanamh anois go hoifigiúl is go foirmeálta ag cuid dos na Ranna Stáit, ach tá ana-shuim fós ag an gcumann agus ag na baill i stair an chontae. Deineann an cumann sraitheanna léachtaí agus turasanna a reáchtáil agus foilsíonn sé dialann imeachtaí agus iris in aghaidh na bliana, Journal of the Kerry Archaeological Historical and Archaeological Society agus The Kerry Magazine. The Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, having been founded in May 1967. The aim of the society at the time was ‘for the collection, recording, study and preservation of material relating to the history and antiquities of County Kerry’. Thankfully, so much of that work is now being done on much more formal basis, by state agencies, but members of the society continue to show interest in the past of our county. Today the main activities of the society are: •The running of a lecture series throughout the winter months (talks usually held in Killarney or Tralee libraries) •Outings during the summer months, generally on Sunday, in various parts of the county. There is also usually one ‘away’ field trip, where a few days are spent exploring another part of Ireland. Sometimes trips abroad are also undertaken, under the auspices of the Society, visiting parts of Europe with good, Kerry connections! •A journal is published annually (free to members) •A magazine is published annually (free to members) •Other events and activities take place from time to time (seminars, conferences, other publications) The Society is open to anyone to join, on

payment of an annual membership fee. This entitles one to a copy of the journal and the magazine, and advance notice of the programme of events. Events are generally free and open to anyone to attend, although people are encouraged to join the society, as there are costs involved in organising all these activities. The society has a website, on which further information about events, publications, and how to join the society is to be found. The address is www.kerryhistory.ie. The society also maintains a Facebook page, which tries to keep people up-to-date with heritagerelated activities happening throughout the county, not only those organised by the society. It is to be found at: https://www. facebook.com/Kerry-Archaeological-andHistorical-Society-196539573713424/. There are other local societies situated throughout the county, as well as groups, such as the Dingle Historical Society, which also organise talks and other events in their own local areas. Look out for publicity about such events in this magazine, and also on posters and in the media. The Federation of Local History Societies publishes a list of societies that are also members of the federation here: http://www. localhistory.ie/?page_id=436. Those of you who live outside of Kerry might be interested in seeing if there is such a society in your own local area.

Japanese Knotweed: Dos and Don'ts Japanese Knotweed is an invasive alien species that can cause damage to property, roads and footpaths, from structural damages, as well as affecting the value of your home. Japanese Knotweed tickets; threat-

ens native plants and animals by forming dense thickets; it blocks routes used by wildlife to disperse. Below is a basic list of do's and don'ts to consider before it is eradicated.

Do’s •

Treat knotweed as soon as you are aware of it, because the more it establishes itself, the more difficult to remove. If possible, it is best to wait until later summer - as treatment is most effective when applied to flowering stems.

Try to keep any outbreak of knotweed isolated; this helps to avoid the risk of spreading it further.

Record sighting on www.biodiversity.ie

Contact the appropriate authorities to eradicate the weed thoroughly. There are many specialists in the field that have the appropriate equipment and experience to deal with the threat of Japanese knotweed.

Make use of the appropriately licensed herbicides and chemicals to help get rid of this pest, and do so in a safe and efficient manner. Remember to wear protective clothes when handling herbicides or chemicals.

Contact the local councils and environment agencies to gain further advice on how to affectively kill off the weed and how to correctly dispose the materials.

DO NOT TRANSPORT Japanese knotweed anywhere. It is illegal to move knotweed waste except to bring it to a licensed waste facility that has been given prior notification.

Make sure that any clothes and shoes that have come into contact with the weed are checked and washed thoroughly to ensure that contamination isn’t spread further.

Remember to recheck any previously contaminated areas for up to 2-3 years after removal, ensuring that no re-growth has occurred.

Don’ts •

Do not Attempt to dig the weed out – it can potentially stimulate the weed into growing more rapidly, taking over an area more quickly.

Do not pull the weeds out of the ground, as this can expose part of the infectious crowns, stimulating growth.

Do not use a lawnmower or hedge trimmers to cut down the knotweed as this can infect the surrounding areas, making the threat that much more difficult to destroy.

Do not use unlicensed herbicides and chemicals close to any watercourse, plants or wildlife as you could damage the environment.

Do not use any part of the weed to be integrated into compost as this can ignite another outbreak, due to the resilient nature of knotweed.

Do not dispose in garden waste pick-ups as this can transport the pest to other locations.

Dispose of it on site by allowing it to dry out and then burn the remains. There are also specialised facilities available that dispose of Knotweed professionally.

Do not spread any soil that has been contaminated with the Japanese Knotweed rhizome, as the root system is exceptionally resilient and regenerative. Take note that anything within 7 metres of an infected site may contain the weed's root system.

Do not do anything illegal! If you spread Japanese Knotweed, you will be breaking the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. So, take care and deal with this pest the correct way.

opportunity to help our friends in Camphill and your sponsorship for the cyclists however big or small would be much appreciated.

Richie Williams Adventure Race, This weekend we welcome participants and supporters to our Peninsula for the annual Dingle Adventure Race which will take place on Saturday June 10th. The organisers request the patience and cooperation of all road users especially on Saturday morning as the majority of the participants will be using the main roads at various stages in their respective events. The Conor Pass will be closed to traffic from 8.45a.m. to 10.30a.m. and An Clasadh from 9.45a.m. to 2.30p.m.but care is needed on all roads as the events are spread right across the Peninsula. Quality Service. My plaudits this week go to the staff of O Flahertys Shop and Petrol Station in Milltown Dingle. When a relatively small sum of money was found on the floor of their shop they went through the CCTV recordings and promptly returned the cash to the customer concerned. I am not for one moment saying that other outlets would not have taken the same action but must complement Shane and the staff at O Flahertys for their Quality Service on this occasion. Ta buaile bas mór toilte agaibh go léir. Procession. The annual Corpus Christi Procession is scheduled for Sunday June 18th from St Marys Church through Strand Street to The Marine Centre Area. The Procession has not visited this area of town for many years and Benediction and final blessings will take place in the grass area at the Marina Centre on the day. Fr Joe and the Parish Council invite all parishioners and visitors to join in the Procession as it is one of the few public events outside of the church each year. Yacht Race. The Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Yacht Race is scheduled to take place on the third weekend in June. This Race has proven to be another popular event on the local calendar with many supporters travelling by road to enjoy the spectacle and join the participants in celebrations here in West Kerry over the weekend. Cycle. Dingle Camphill Group has been chosen as one of the beneficiaries from the proceeds this years Ring Of Kerry Annual Charity Cycle on Saturday July 1st. Quite a number of local cyclists have agreed to undertake the 110 mile challenge around the Ring and would appreciate support by way of sponsorship from the general public for their efforts. Campbell hope to continue with the development of their facilities as well as substantial reduce their outstanding commitments from the proceeds of this event. This is certainly a great

Tidy Towns. As stated in previous editions our main project this year is centered around the Milltown area. A great neighbourhood effort last week resulted in the Graveyard exterior wall getting a fresh coat of paint and the surrounding hedges also got a much needed haircut. This effort really proved that many willing hands make light work. As part of this project we have selected Friday June 23rd as the evening to organise a few short talks to explain the highlight the variety of wildlife which live in this area and also to outline the great stories and history of the Bridge and surrounding commons. All Welcome to join us on the 23rd and add any extra bits of forgotten tales to the occasion.

Dog Toilets. Following many unsuccessful efforts to get dog owners to clean up their canines poo we have now put 3 new DOG TOILETS in place along Sli na Slainte on an experimental basis in a last gasp attempt to improve this unsightly situation. We ask all dog owners to introduce their pets to these toilets which are placed at Milltown Bridge Roundabout, The Bottle Bank at the Tracks and at Greenmount Roundabout. Depending on the success or failure of this effort it is intended to introduce more toilets to other areas and we would appreciate suggestions from the public and canine owners of suitable areas if needed. Peil. Comhgairdeachas ó croí do Cumann Peile na Gaeltachta as an bua mór a bhí acu i gComórtas Peile na Gaeltachta i Muigheo an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. Beidh an comórtas sin á eagrú sa Leithinis seo i 2019.

Two years ago Paula Hand wrote her first book. A short story eBook that transpired after a blog she wrote had over 30 thousand hits. That first eBook became one of a series of four that later on became a paperback called The Sensual Collection, eight short stories all intertwined with each other. Writing became a passion and that passion turned into self-publishing four books in two years, the latest of which is “Hidden” a contemporary fictional novel beginning in the past of the main character Samuel Delaney, as a 7-yearold child, before the story takes the reader to his adulthood and on an emotional journey. Delaney never expected his secret, his past, his mother to destroy the man he had fought hard to become, but that all changed early on a Wednesday morning risking the most important thing in his life - Faye, his soul mate for the past ten years.

Open for Breakfast & Lunch everyday Open for Dinner at weekends

The town name of Dingle has been changed, the characters are fictional, and the story is heartfelt. This contemporary novel can be found in the Dingle Book Shop and Polymath Book Store in Tralee, written under the pen name of Amelia J Hunter.

Scéal Eile ó Leabharlann An Daingin

Last week, Mr Damien English, Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal officially launched the ‘Libraries Ireland: Makes every library your local library’ service. The service, which has been rolled out in phases, is now operational nationwide. Kerry Library has been part of the initiative since July 2016, so you may already be familiar with the service, but here’s a recap: • 333 library branches are active in this scheme; if you have a library card, you can use it in any library from Dingle to Donegal. • Library members can borrow and request books from any library in Ireland, which means you have access to 15 million items. • Requests are delivered twice a week, so the service is fast and efficient. • You can borrow up to 12 items at a time and request up to 12 items at a time. • You can return your books to any library. If you’re in Galway for the weekend, you can borrow a book there you can return it in your local branch when you get home. • We can provide multiple copies of books to book clubs. • If you sign up for email notifications, you will get a reminder three days before items are due, helping you to avoid fines. • Our website www.kerrylibrary.ie offers a range of services including ebooks, Audio ebooks, magazines, online learning, language courses and genealogy. • Best of all, library membership is totally free. Tom Crean Challenge Walk

Tom Crean Antarctic Explorer

The Tom Crean Challenge Walk started in 2013 as a Gathering event and has gone on to become one of the most popular challenge walks in the country. The capped 200 places were fully booked within a matter of hours. On Saturday 17th June walkers from all over Ireland and as far away as Norway, Germany and UK will come to Annascaul to take part in this years event.

Aidan Dooley will bring his award winning one man show ‘Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer’ to the Annascaul home of the legendary Antarctic explorer for two nights on the 17th and 18th June.

The organisation requires trojan effort from the Annascaul Walking Club members supported by the local community of farmers, businesses and the ‘go to’ people in the parish who help out for every local event. The weekend of 16th -18th June will bring many visitors to the village and they will not be disappointed as they will enjoy music, songs, dancing, stories and the chance to meet famous adventures and fellow lovers of the hills. A genuine Annascaul céad míle fáilte awaits. The extra buzz this year is that Mary Scannell, an Annascaul native, is leading off and taking part in the walk. Mary’s climbing record makes her another ‘Unsung Hero’ from Annascaul. Mary has climbed all Seven Summits on seven continents culminating with Mt Everest on 13th May 2016. She now joins a distinguished list of only five other Irish women and is the third Kerry person to complete this incredible feat. The Tom Crean walk is a challenging walk and a very high level of fitness and experience on the hills is needed. It is not a guided walk, however, club members will be visible on all stages to help with blisters or minor injuries and assist on escape routes if necessary. The entrants will assemble at 6.30am on Saturday morning to get the bus to the start at An Baile Breac. The route takes in Mount Brandon, Brandon Peak, An Garan and down to Mullagh Bheal to the first check point and emergency escape route. Complimentary water and energy bars are provided here to help before taking on the steep climb of Ballysitteragh. On to the Conor Pass car park, the second check point, half way stage and escape route. Here the sponsored refreshments are distributed to all together with rousing words of encouragement. Refreshed and fortified it is on to Sliabh Maca Re, Cnapan Mor and the Windy gap, this is last of the climbs for the day but can be hard on tired legs. On to Cnoc Mhaoilionain and down to An Com Dubh Mor. The home stretch is along the Sean Droichead river walk and emerges to the finish line at the South Pole Inn in the village of Annascaul. Aileen Crean O Brien will be on hand here to present the well deserved Tom Crean Medallion to all the finishers. Scenes of emotion with cheers, tears, pride and that wonderful sense of achievement are all on display at this point. A welcome BBQ is then provided at Hanafin’s Bar.

These unique performances will take place upstairs in the South Pole Inn in the bedroom of Tom Crean himself! The intrepid explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive three famous expeditions: Discovery, (1901 – 1904); Terra Nova (1910 – 1913); and Endurance (1914 – 1916). Crean’s story is a testament of human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, his 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. Performances take place at 8.30pm on each evening with tickets available from The South Pole Inn, priced €10.

Annascaul Walking Club has established links with the local primary school Scoil Bhreac Cluain to give the opportunity to young people to enjoy hill walking and learn about local history and heroes, mythology, flora and fauna. May 8th to 12th was Endurance week in the school. Together with Annascaul Walking Club every child in the school was given an opportunity to do an age appropriate Tom Crean Challenge Walk. The week ended with a spellbinding account from Aileen Crean O Brien and Bill Shephard of their 2016 traverse of South Georgia after which each pupil was presented with a Junior Endurance Medallion. The whole school then joined in singing of “The Ballad of Tom Crean”. What a brilliant occasion to encourage future adventurers.

Think Before You Flush in Dingle Think Before You Flush is a public awareness campaign operated by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme and is supported by Irish Water. The campaign was born out of a need to keep marine litter from being flushed down our toilets, flowing through the sewage systems, swimming through the sea and ending up on our beaches as marine litter. Clean Coasts commissioned a survey of the nation’s flushing behaviour and found out that 3 in 10 Irish adults have flushed items other than toilet paper down the toilet. The two biggest culprits our clean coast groups find on the beaches are cotton buds and baby wipes. Our survey found that 43% of people thought these items were removed in the waste water treatment plant, unfortunately they are not. This year Think Before You Flush is running programmes in 9 communities around the country, of which Dingle is one. There have been Think Before You Flush workshops in all the Dingle town schools running fun and informative experiments for local children. Dingle Tidy Towns & Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium are also promoting this initiative so look out for information stands over the next couple of weeks!

Medical card and Domiciliary Care Allowance Question I’m getting Domiciliary Care Allowance for my daughter so I was happy to hear that medical card cover was being extended to children who qualify for the payment. The medical card application form seems to require a lot of information that doesn’t appear relevant in this situation. Is there another way to apply? Answer You don’t need to complete the medical card application form to get the medical card for your daughter. The medical card for children who qualify for Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) isn’t subject to a means test so information about your income is not required. Instead, you can register your child online by going to the website medicalcard.ie and clicking on ‘Medical Cards (DCA)’. The site also has a form you can download if you prefer to apply by post. You will need to provide the following information: · Your Personal Public Service (PPS) Number and contact details · Your child’s PPS Number and date of birth · The name and address of your child’s GP The website includes a list of GPs who are participating in the scheme. If your GP of choice is accepting applications electronically, your child’s details will be sent to them. If not, you will be emailed a copy of the relevant details, which you can print out and bring to the GP. Once the GP accepts your child to their GMS patient list, the registration will be finalised by the National Medical Card Unit and a medical card in your child’s name will be sent to you. If you have questions about the medical card, you can call the information line on Lo-call 1890 252 919. Further information is also available from the Citizens Information Service West Kerry Live 47

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor Camp Community Childcare Centre Camp Community Childcare Centre are now enrolling for September 2017 & January 2018 for our FREE Junior & Senior Preschool service. Early Childhood Care and Edution on (ECCE) As part of an initiative by the Irish Government under the ECCE scheme it is now possible to enrol your child in our Preschool free of charge for 2 years. Introduced in September 2016, children can register for free preschool when they are aged 3, and will be able to remain in pre-school until they make their transition to primary school. Due to increased demand. we advise families to contact us as early as possible for ECCE places, as our numbers are limited. We also provide subsidised full or half day care service for children from 6 months upwards. Parents can contact Camp Community Childcare to arrange to view our service. Please phone 066 7130338 or email: campchildcare@eircom.net where Carol, our Centre Manager will answer all your questions. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance The University of Connecticut Video production and film makers were in the area on Tuesday last to capture the scenic beauty of the area and highlight some of the traditions and activities which attract tourists into our area. And after a foggy start to the day feeding a few sheep in Gleann na nGealt, the sun came out and shone brilliantly and the film crew were delighted, capturing breathtaking views of mountain and sea. Our local champion sheep shearer Jimmy O’Dwyer still as good as ever at his best sheared a sheep and Milo O’Brien renowned in International and National Sheep Dog Trials enthralled an eager group of spectators at Kilteenbane when he put his dogs through their paces, controlling and directing his sheep, a work of art for sure ! And Paddy the pet lamb from Knockglossbeg was delighted with the attention too! The history of the Dingle Train and happenings on the Tralee Dingle and Castlegregory line was relayed by Mike O’Neill at The Railway Tavern and Mike and Bernadette Fitzgerald had the fruits of the shoreline and the sea on the counter at Camp Junction Bar/Restaurant, fresh perriwinkles and Carigeen Moss for all to sample !. And up at Ashes Bar/ Restaurant Thomas was getting ready for the Dingle Way Walkers due to arrive for their evening meals. And along with food and drink Ashe’s now have a state of the art Glamping site, recently opened at the rear of the bar, where once the late Mrs. Ashe provided a set down for the Horse Drawn Caravans on their way out into the peninsula. The Glamping site is Tommy Dowling’s new business venture providing an alternative accommodation experience for tourists in the village. Everybody talked about Camp Fair, the 3 day traditional sheep fair going back to the time of Lord Ventry and still going strong every year on September 18th and getting bigger and better ! Kathleen Daly who was the first to accommodate Walkers in her B/B when the Dingle Way was opened over 30 years ago. Kathleen told of her experiences, the lovely guests she has hosted down through the years and the importance of The Dingle Way to our tourist economy. Earlier Breda O’Dwyer at O’Dwyers Mace and Petrol Station brought the film crew on a walk through the Retail Centre showing the combined services including an internet hub and hair Salon, all available in the village. Breda, an avid walker herself talked of the importance of The Dingle Way and of walking loops and trails in the Camp area. The overall project shows Camp, a magical place, an area rich in history, culture and tradition, the gateway to the Dingle peninsula with accommodation to suit all interests and pubs and excellent cuisine in a wonderful mix of wonderful scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way on the west coast of Ireland. Thank you to the University of Connecticut and to Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance who support this initiative. 50 West Kerry Live

Go n-éirí and t-ádh libh ! Tracey and Samuel, may you enjoy many many years of happiness together ! Obituary Margaret Ashe nee Ennis, Ashe’s Bar, Camp passed away peacefully on May 27th in the loving care of The Ocean View Nursing Home, Camp. Margaret will always be remembered fondly in Camp for her generosity and wonderful entrepreneurial spirit. Moving back with the family in the 1970’s to help run Ashe’s Bar in Camp, Margaret saw potential and business opportunities around every corner in a growing tourism industry in West Kerry at that time. One of her first business ventures was selling Ice Cream from the stable side of the bar. And in the field at the rear of the bar, Ashes provided an overnight stay for the horse drawn caravans making their way out into the peninsula. And later when Traditional Music became popular, Margaret supported by her son Thomas started a Traditional music session on Sunday evenings attracting musicians from all over, even our Parish Priest Fr. Gerry Keane in his homily at her funeral mass recalls enjoying the sessions after travelling all the way from Listowel on many occasions. Later on Margaret opened the first restaurant in Camp, succeeding in this venture too and Ashe’s Restaurant became a popular gourmet venue, rated highly amongst the best in the country. Margaret was laid to rest in Ballinknockane Cemetary, Camp on Tuesday, May 30th. following requiem mass celebrated by Fr. Gerry Keane, PP. A guard of honour representative of all of the community attended. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis. Sympathy is extended to her husband Seamus, sons Thomas, James and Pádraig, daughter Marion, grandchildren, brothers Thomas and Pat, sister Clare, son-in-law Martin, daughter-in-law Azita, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends. Her sons Oliver and John predeceased her. The death of Fr. Jim Downey occurred recently in Fatima Home, Tralee. Fr. Downey ministered as Curate in the parish of Annascaul, Camp and Inch from 1969 – 1975 engaging fully in community and parish activities. During his time with us, Fr. Downey supported and helped the local Youth in setting up KDYS Youth Clubs in the parish. Sympathy is extended to Bishop Ray Brown and all the priests of the Diocese and all his relatives and friends. Rest In Peace Passing Of Dr. Donald Caird It is with sadness that we learned of the death of Dr. Donald Caird, Former Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin and Glendalough. Dr Caird and his wife Nancy and family were regular visitors to their home in Camp. The Caird family made many friends in Camp and Donald and Nancy enjoyed the weekly game of whist in the Old School whenever they were around. He had a great love of the Irish language and culture. He concelebrated Mass on The Blasket island in the summer of 2001 and was a frequent visitor to the Great Blasket Centre, attending the annual Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid on a regular basis down through the years. Sympathy is extended to his wife Nancy, son, John, daughters Ann and Helen, Grandchildren, extended family many relatives and friends. Birthday Greetings A little bird told me that Christina O’Shea, popular Aughacasla National school teacher celebrated a special birthday last weekend. Best wishes and hope you had a wonderful celebration, Christina !

Meniscus Injuries in the Knee – Knee Pain Knee Pain – Meniscal Tears Cartilage within the knee joint provides cushioning between the bones at this joint to protect them from the stresses of walking, jumping, running etc. There is articular cartilage which is the smooth, white tissue that covers the ends of bones (Femur, tibia) where they come together to form the knee joint. Healthy cartilage in our joints makes it easier to move. It allows the bones to glide over each other with very little friction. Articular cartilage can be damaged by injury or normal wear and tear. Within the knee you also have fibrocartilage in the form of the medial and lateral menisci. These are two thick wedge-shaped pads of cartilage attached to top of the tibia (tibial plateau) and under the femur bone, allowing the femur to glide when the knee joint moves. Each meniscus is curved in a C-shape, with the front part of the cartilage called the anterior horn and the back part called the posterior horn. Meniscal tears are usually described by where they are located anatomically in the C shape and by their appearance (for example, “bucket handle” tear, longitudinal, parrot beak, and transverse). Because the blood supply is different to each part of the meniscus, knowing where the tear is located may help decide how easily an injury might heal (with or without surgery). The better the blood supply, the better the potential for recovery. The outside rim of cartilage has better blood supply than the central part of the “C.” Blood supply to knee cartilage also decreases with age, with up to 20% of normal blood supply lost by age 40.

sports like tennis, basketball, and golf, can also cause meniscus damage. The risk of developing a torn meniscus increases with age because cartilage begins to gradually wear out, losing its blood supply and its resilience. Increasing body weight also puts more stress on the meniscus meaning that routine daily activities like walking and climbing stairs increase the potential for wear, degeneration, and tearing. It is estimated that six out of 10 patients older than 65 years have a degenerative meniscus tear. Many of these tears may never cause problems. Because some of the fibres of the cartilage are interconnected with those of the ligaments that surround the knee, meniscus injuries may be associated with tears of the collateral and cruciate ligaments, depending upon the mechanism of injury. Symptoms of a meniscus injury can include some or all of the following: Pain with running or walking longer distances Intermittent swelling of the knee joint: Many times, the knee with a torn meniscus feels “tight.”

circumducting the knee in full flexion. (MRI) is the test of choice to confirm the diagnosis of a torn meniscus. It also allows a radiographer to visualize the inner structures of the knee, including the cartilage and ligaments, the surface of the bones, and the muscles and tendons that surround the knee joint. Plain Xrays cannot be used to identify meniscal tears but may be helpful in looking for bony changes, including fractures, arthritis, and loose bony fragments within the joint. In older patients, X-rays may be taken of both knees while the patient is standing. This allows the joint spaces to be compared to assess the degree of cartilage wear. Cartilage takes up space within the joint and if the joint space is narrowed, it may be an indicator that there is less cartilage present, likely from degenerative disease. Treatment of Meniscal Tears Sometimes conservative measures such as physical therapy, NSAIDs and rest can be enough to settle the condition, if it is not too serious. When conservative measures are ineffective the next step may be surgery to repair or remove the damaged cartilage.

Popping, especially when climbing up or down stairs Giving way or buckling (the sensation that the knee is unstable and the feeling that the knee will give way): Less commonly, the knee actually will give way and cause the patient to fall.

What causes a meniscus to tear?

Locking (a mechanical block where the knee cannot be fully extended or straightened): This occurs when a piece of torn meniscus folds on itself and blocks full range of motion of the knee joint. The knee gets “stuck,” usually flexed between 15 and 30 degrees and cannot bend or straighten from that position.

A forceful twist or sudden stop can cause the end of the femur to grind into the top of the tibia, pinching and potentially tearing the cartilage of the meniscus. This injury can also occur with deep squatting or kneeling, especially when lifting a heavy weight. Meniscus tear injuries often occur during athletic activities, especially in contact sports like football and hockey. Motions that require pivoting and sudden stops, in

The diagnosis of a knee injury begins with a history of the injury etc. and physical examination. There have been many tests described to assess the internal structures of the knee. The McMurray test one long used orthopedic test . The health-care professional flexes the knee Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at Ré Nua Clinic and rotates the tibia while feeling along the & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) joint. The test is positive for a potential tear if a click is felt or noticeable pain is felt while West Kerry Live 53

Straw, Hay and Rushes in Irish Folk Tradition le Anne O’Dowd ‘Straw, hay and rushes were utilised throughout the centuries in Ireland for a myriad of uses and practices. In the 18th and 19th centuries travellers to Ireland often wrote disparaging and derogatory accounts of what they saw - saddles of straw, sleeping on rushes, restricting animals with tethers and spancels of bark and animal hair, and wearing crudely-made straw and rush hats. Yet the people who produced and utilised these objects were both ingenious and thrifty, making use of what they could find at no cost and using their skills to make objects which we now see as having not only function, but also beauty. Anne O’Dowd’s powerful and lavishly illustrated work looks at the historical context of the making of a range of useful and ceremonial objects and the folklore and traditions connected with the materials and practices. The book is beautifully illustrated with colour and black and white images and presents a fascinating insight into Irish crafts and customs.’ - Irish Academic Press

Blasket Island Night Tomás Ó Cromthain in his classic book An tOileánach said that one day the Blasket Islands will be without any of the people mentioned in his book or anyone who will remember them. He wrote “I give thanks to God that he gave me the ability to observe what I experienced, so that after I’ve gone people will know what life was like in my time”. Mar ní bheidh ár leitheídaí ann arís…! From Ó Criomhthain’s writings we learn that the Blasket Islands were rich nutritionally during the 19th century. A wide variety of seafood, including scad, pilchard, mackerel, cod, herring, halibut, pollock, bream, ling, rockfish and porpoise known as “bonamh na mara” also seals, crab, winkles, limpets as well as seaweeds such as dulse, sea lettuces and murlins. Their diet also included potatoes, milk, lumps of butter, porridge, bread, rabbit, seabird’s eggs and mutton including vegetables, rye and oats. It is evident that the Islanders may have had some advantage over their fellow countrymen on the mainland, particularly at the time of the Great Famine. On Wednesday the 5th of July a special night is planned celebrating the Great Food Provenance of the Blaskets in Tigh T.P. Baile na nGall. There are forty of the Buffer Keane Family (The Island Kings) of Springfield coming, descendants of lucht an tÓileáin Mhór, and they hope to be joined by muintir na hÁite or any others interested in Blasket Island culture. The specially selected five course set dinner will be representative of the type of food eaten on the Blaskets in the 19th century. After dinner, entertainment will include music, song and poetry remembering times past, the Great People and it’s connection to the New World. Further details will be announced in the next edition of West Kerry Live, Raidió na Gaeltachta & TG4. Open to all, tickets for this night will be issued on a first come basis. Further information from Séan Breandán agus Tigh T.P – 087 2460507 Jim – 085 1396121.

Oiche An Bhlascaoid Mhóir I leabhar clasaiceach Tomás Ó Cromthain, An tÓileánach, deir sé go mbeidh lá ann ná mbeidh éinne fágtha ós na Blascaodaí, agus ní chuimhneoidh éinne orthu níos mó. Scríobh sé “tugaim buíochas do Dhia a thug an deis dom an eispeiréis seo a mhaireadh, mar nuair atáim imithe, beidh a fhios ag daoine cén saghas saol a bhí againn”. Mar ní bheidh ár leitheídaí arís ann..! Ó scríbhneoireacht Ó Criomhthain, faighfimíd amach go raibh muintir na mBlascaodaí saibhir ó thaobh cothú de, i rith an 19ú aois. Féachann sé go raibh buntáiste ag muintir na Blascaodaí thar muintir an dúcháis ar an mórthír, go háirithe ag am an Gorta. Ar an 5ú lá d’Iúil, Dé Ceadaoin, beidh óiche speisialta chun an saol seo a cheiliúradh i dTigh T.P. , Baile na nGall. Tá dhá scór ó chlann Buffer Keane ag teacht ó Springfield, atá ceangailte len Blaoscaod Mór, agus ba bhreá leo a bheith I measc muintir na háite agus éinne a bhfuil spéis acu sa Bhlaoscaod. Beidh dinnéar déanta suas do 5 chúrsa, bunaithe ar an saghas bia a nithfidís ar na Blaoscaodaí. Tar-éis dinnéar, beidh amhráin agus dánta á roinnt, ag cuimhneamh ar an t-am atá imithe agus an ceangal atá acu leis an domhan nua. Beidh níos mó eolais sa chéad irisleabhar eile do West Kerry Live, Raidió na Gaeltachta agus TG4. Tá’n óiche oscailte go dtí gach éinne agus beidh ticeadaí díolta ó thaobh freastail ar an gceann is tuisce. Níos mó eolais ó Seán Breandán agus Tigh T.P. Tigh T.P – 087 2460507 Jim – 085 1396121
