Kerry ETB Open New Centre in Dingle Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin opened Kerry ETB’s new Further Education and Training Centre in Dingle on Monday last. The Centre is located in Rice House and provides the ETB with a modern facility from which to deliver its Further Education and Training (FET) services for the area. Kerry ETB offers a very extensive FET programme with over 10,000 Learners engaged annually. The FET programmes are from Levels 1-6 on the National Qualifications Framework and include Literacy programmes, Community Education programmes, Back to Education Initiative programmes, Adult Education programmes, Post Leaving Certificate programmes, Traineeships and Apprenticeships. Prior to the opening of this Centre, Kerry ETB's Literacy programme was located in an office in the old CBS School on The Mall. This new Centre will allow for the development and expansion of programme delivery right across the full spectrum of FET in the area. The opening of the Centre will provide both Learners and Employers with the opportunity to access these services locally. Commenting on the opening of the Centre, Ms. Eithne Boland, Centre Manager, stated “I am delighted with the opening of our Centre in the Rice House building, which has been refurbished over the past few months. Some courses are up and running in the Centre already in the areas of Basic Computers, Personal Development, ESOL and Irish for Parents and a variety of courses, accredited and non-accredited, are due to commence in November in Healthcare, Office Skills, Photography, Facebook Marketing, Stained Glass & Mosaic Art, Interior Design, Storytelling, Creative Writing and Horticulture. We look forward to working with the local Community and Employers in developing the provision to meet local needs.” For further information, please contact Ms. Eithne Boland, Centre Manager on 066 9152361 or by email at eboland@kerryetb.ie.

Cáirde An Diseart

At the early meetings of the Board of An Diseart following the death of Monsignor Padraig O’Fiannachta, deep appreciation, was expressed, on the wonderful legacy he had bequeathed to the people of Ireland and especially to muintir Chorca Dhuibhne. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. His translation of the Bible, An Biobla Naomha, into the Irish language from the original Hebrew and Greek texts; his poetry and many scholarly publications in the Irish language, as well as, his valuable collection of manuscripts and books now housed in the Dingle Library; none, however, surpassing An Diseart, the jewel on the crown of his achievements. The question was then asked and discussed; how can we, the Board, custodians of An Diseart on behalf of the people of Chorca Dhuibhne, ensure that the work and vision of Monsignor Padraig is not only kept alive but is nurtured, developed and built upon to form An Diseart as a lively community giving expression to and promoting Celtic Culture and Spirituality as an integral part of our local heritage. As the development and viability of An Diseart had been dependant on Monsignor Padraig’s generosity over the years and as some major repairs to the building were due, we talked about possible ways that might help in securing the future of An Diseart. With the help of Pat O’Leary of Malachy Walsh and Partners, Consulting Engineers, we applied for a special grant being offered by Kerry County Council for the repairs that were needed to an area of Dry Rot discovered in the Southern corner of the building. Thankfully out of the fifteen applications we were among the three chosen and work has already begun there, for which we are deeply grateful. However, on commencing the work the builder discovered that the Dry Rot was more extensive than originally thought and, as a result, extra funds would be needed to complete the work, which, at the moment is being negotiated. Another area of An Diseart’s life that up to this has ensured its viability and sustainability has been the seven staff members, employed under Fás/ Solas and Udaras schemes. The staff has been doing a wonderful job in the day-to-day management of An Diseart and in keeping the building and the gardens in such excellent order. One member of staff retired some time ago and Solas has not been able to find a replacement; another is due to finish shortly and again Solas is fearful that it will be difficult to find a replacement. With this, extra demands are being made on members of the Board of Management who already give freely and generously of their time and energies to An Diseart. This, once again, brings us back to our discussions about the future of An Diseart referred above on how the work and vision of Monsignor Padraig can be nurtured, developed and built upon to form An Diseart into a lively community giving expression to and promoting our Irish, Celtic Culture and Spirituality, as an integral part of who we are as a community, here in Corca Dhuibhne, in the 21st century.

that experienced periods of intense poverty and trauma, such as the Great Famine 1845 to 1852; the struggle for Independence in the early 20th Century and then the difficult transition from what might be called the “Old” to the “New” or Modern Ireland. All this is an essential and integral part of the mix when referring to our Cultural and Spiritual heritage which is, in fact, ingrained in the DNA that finds expression in the customs and traditions, in the characters and characteristics of the local community. For that reason Monsignor Padraig saw the involvement of the local community as a necessary counter balance to what An Diseart as an Academic Institute hoped to offer. There is no doubt that what is on offer here in the Dingle Peninsula is unique; the area is special because of the natural, unspoilt beauty of its physical landscape, but more importantly because of its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, enshrined within the Irish Language and still very much in evidence and integral to the outlook, attitudes the lifestyle of all who live here and thus needs to be preserved, nurtured and further developed. This, no doubt, is what has attracted the Sacred Heart University and other American Universities to establish a base here and a partnership with the Diseart Certainly over the past 50 years or so, individuals and families from all over Ireland, Europe and indeed from different parts of the world have felt attracted to and drawn by the beauty, the rich cultural and spiritual heritage and the atmosphere and ambience that these have created. Many have become part of the local community adopting Corca Duibhne as their home, bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience, expertise, skills and talent that have in many ways injected new energy and life into the local communities; thus further enriching what is unique and special about the Peninsula. At the moment An Diseart, is hosting a variety of activities representing all aspects of the cultural and spiritual life of the local community; and there are regular classes as Gaeilge for those wishing to learn or improve their Irish. As the home of the Presentation Sisters in Dingle the building itself has an important story to tell; much of which unfolds in the wonderful paintings and murals that decorate the Convent walls; with a beautiful Fresco of the Last Supper, the only one of its kind in Ireland, all the work of the American artist Eleanor Yates. Then there is the beautiful Gothic style Chapel with the treasured Harry Clarke stained glass windows, all of which attract thousands of visitors in the course of the year and the nominal charge of €3 is a vital source of income for the maintenance of the building. In addition there are the spacious Convent Gardens that offer members of the local community and visitors a quiet and colourful place to stroll or to sit and relax. The middle garden has been developed into a “prayer garden” which Monsignor Padraig hoped would one day become a retreat space for reflection, prayer and meditation inspired and nourished by the fruits of our Celtic Spiritual heritage. To finish, we believe that An Diseart has the history and background, as well as, great potential to offer the community here in Corca Dhuibhne a forum to evaluate and assimilate all its riches and provide the necessary means and facilities to develop further and bring our Cultural and Spiritual heritage into the heart of the 21st Century. We feel that setting up a FRIENDS OF THE DISEART could be the first step in initiating and in enabling this process to unfold. There will be a meeting of all who are interested to discuss these possibilities on Thursday 16th of November at 8.00pm. We are very grateful to Fr. Pat Ahern (Founder of Síamsa Tíre) who has kindly agreed to come and facilitate that meeting. - Fr Jim Sheehy and Joan Maguire. (Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of An Diseart)

One suggestion, which was greeted with enthusiasm, was that we should form a “Friends of An Diseart” “Cáirde An Diseart,” as an important step in working towards that vision. Certainly it could be an important means of raising the necessary funds for the care and maintenance of the building and grounds, which over the last two centuries or so, have housed the Community of the Presentation Sisters, who, as a Teaching Order, have played a significant and central role in preserving, promoting and witnessing to the values of our Christian, Catholic cultural and spiritual heritage. This was during a time of political and social unrest and a time West Kerry Live 5

that if you fail to complete before 31st December 2017, you will be excluded from the scheme and asked to repay all GLAS money paid to date.

Louis Murchan

Update on the response by the Department to Ex-Storm Ophelia

Carbon Navigators – BDGS All participants in the Beef Data Genomics Scheme are required to fill out the form they received from the Department of Agriculture recently, and return it to them by 31st October 2017. It is essential that this is completed, as failure to return it on time will result in you being kicked out of the BDG Scheme, at which point, you will be asked to repay all monies received to date. Those applying for the first time, under BDGS II will have to get this application completed by an advisor registered to do this. The closing date is the same, in this case also. GLAS - Planting New Hedgerow With GLAS inspections on-going, now is a good time to re-cap on what you should have done, by way of option requirements, to ensure that you are compliant with GLAS. This is a “farmerdriven” scheme” and the onus is on the individual to ensure that you have carried out what you were supposed to do. Not to be too harsh, but there is no point complaining to your advisor, if you were caught ploughing a field that was in Low Input Permanent Pasture of for not having your bird or bat boxes up. It is your responsibility. The objective of this option is to establish new hedgerows on farms to increase biodiversity enhance the visual landscape and help to protect water quality.

We were lucky in this part of the country, regarding the impact and damage caused by the recent storms. The second one was more worrisome than “Old Ophelia” but never the less, we got off lightly, compared to other regions. The Department, having responsibility for all aspects of farming and forestry released a press release, the main points of which are as follows: • The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has been working with all other Government Departments and agencies at the National Emergency Co-Ordination Group (NECG) to support an effective whole-of-Government response to Hurricanes Ophelia and Brian. • As of Tuesday 17th October, normal Departmental services to the agrifood sector (meat industry, dairy processing sector, export certification) are largely up and running (other than some localised disruption due to power outages). • The initial assessment of impacts on agriculture is that the main issues relate to power outages affecting dairy farmers in particular, some structural damage and fallen trees in rural areas, and an isolated incident involving an intensive production unit. Farmers are urged to take particular care in dealing with these issues. Dairy Farms:

Mature hedgerows give the Irish landscape its distinctive character and field pattern and provide an important wildlife habitat especially for woodland flora and fauna. Hedgerows provide a barrier and shelter for livestock, stop spread of disease and define the farm boundaries. Hedgerows planted along a watercourse(s) can protect water quality by acting as a barrier, slowing down the movement of soil and nutrients.

• Although power restoration proceeded well, power outages are still causing difficulties for some dairy farms. The Department has engaged directly with dairy processors and the farming organisations on this issue. Farmers with spare generators are encouraged to contact their local co-op with offers of assistance. Dairy processors are best placed to manage logistics and direct resources where necessary.

Where the additional new hedgerow establishment action is taken on a farm boundary, the GLAS participant must ensure it is planted in such a manner that he/she has control of both sides of the new hedgerow and that he/she can maintain both sides of the new hedgerow. Note, where a fence has been erected under TAMS, the Additional New Hedgerow Action cannot be planted inside of this fence.

• The structural damage on farms looks to be lighter than Storm Darwin in 2014. Department of Agriculture inspectors are continuing review the position to provide a fuller picture on the extent of the damage.

The following are the main requirements of the measure: • Plant 6 plants per metre in a double row of whitethorn and/or blackthorn and/or holly. • The minimum linear length that must be planted is 10 metres and this must be in 1 continuous length • The maximum length for which GLAS funding is available is 200 metres per holding. • The location and length (metres) must be identified on the LPIS plot(s) and marked on the map submitted. The new hedge must be a standalone hedge and not placed against an existing hedgerow. • Plants must be purchased from registered producers or registered growers • All newly planted hedges in GLAS whether planted in a grass or tillage field must be fenced off and protected from livestock, from the time the hedge is planted. The fence must be stock-proof and fit for purpose. • Grass and weeds must be controlled and plants must be managed to ensure a dense hedgerow establishes. • Failed or dead plants must be replaced at the earliest possible opportunity • Planting must have taken place before the 31st March of the year following your application The Additional New Hedgerow Establishment Action cannot overlap with the Small Woodland Establishment Option or the Traditional Orchards Option. As whitethorn/hawthorn and blackthorn are potential carriers of diseases that are harmful to plants in the wider environment, it is mandatory that producers of these plants are registered and inspected by the Horticulture and Plant Health Division of DAFM to ensure their freedom of these diseases. GLAS Training There is still plenty of time to complete this one-day GLAS Training Course. It is one of the requirements of the scheme, and there are courses on-going, all over the county. The course should consist of six hours and include a farm-walk of up to 2.5 hours. Farmers are paid €168 to attend (which isn’t bad), But yet again, the “big stick” is waved above your head, 12 West Kerry Live

• The Department’s Animal Welfare Helpline, which gives guidance on protecting animal welfare and safety, in addition to responding to urgent requirements for emergency feed provision, has been operational throughout the period of the storm. A small number of calls have been received. • Departmental staff will continue to take a practical approach in the course of necessary farm inspections, where problems arise that are the direct result of the hurricane. Forestry: • DAFM’s Forestry Inspectors, together with Coillte and private forestry companies are assessing and will continue to do so, the impact on forestry plantations around the country. This work is based around on the ground local reports of damage which will inform the approach for further more focused assessments. There have been some reports of forest damage but it is expected that it will take some time to form a full national picture of the impacts. Reports of forest damage can also be made to DAFM by contacting us at: felling.forestservice@agriculture.gov.ie or Lo-call: 0761 064 415. • Safety remains the immediate priority. Dealing with fallen trees and windblown forests should not be undertaken without specialist expertise. Fallen trees can present significant danger, not least because they may also have brought down live power lines. Anybody who believes this to be the case should immediately make contact with Electric Ireland on 1850 372 999. • The public should also stay clear of damaged trees which have not yet fallen as these also present a significant danger. Local authorities have the lead role in clearing fallen trees from public roads and Coillte will continue to be available to assist and advise on this work. Any concerns on fallen or damaged trees on private lands should be directed to tree care specialists or to Coillte for specialist advice. With a possible thirteen storms or ex-hurricanes due to hit our shores between not and the years’s end, it is not the damage of one storm that is worrying, but the continuous damage that may be caused by incessant wind and rain damage. Farmers (and indeed all property owners) are advised to assess buildings for structural damage, especially to the roof, so as to avoid tragedies such as the two recent deaths of people while repairing storm damage. The other three killed during the Storm must also be remembered, and please, let it not be you, next time. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Butternut Squash Soup, Smoked Bacon, Sage Oil Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School I always get asked for suggestions for soup, especially at this time of year so here is one. The base of most soups is onion, celery and leek mostly stays the same – always taking time in the first few minutes of cooking an ingredient before adding the next to get a better depth of flavour. Overall it will take an extra few minutes but this is worth it for the flavour. When I think of a good soup I always think of seasonal vegetables, made with good stock and a simple and seasonal garnish. This recipe reflects the autumnal season with a simple garnish that compliments the butternut squash.

cook for 2 minutes each. Add the garlic and cook for about 2 minutes. Then add the squash and cook for a further 10 minutes. Add the stock, bring this to a simmer and cook for about 25 minutes. At this stage the butternut squash should be soft. Put this mixture in a blender and add some cream and salt and pepper. Blend this all in stages to a smooth soup. Season with salt and pepper. For the smoked bacon Heat a pan. Once it is hot add a little oil and then the bacon. Fry the bacon until it is brown and crispy.

Ingredients

To serve

2 onions, diced

Pour the soup into a bowls, drizzle a little oil over the soup and garnish with a little smoked bacon.

1 celery stalk, sliced 1 leek, washed and sliced

Enjoy!!!

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced 2 large butternut squash, peeled and diced 12 sage leaves 1L vegetable or chicken stock 200ml cream 200g streaky smoked bacon, cut into lardons 120ml rapeseed oil Method For the sage oil Take the sage leaves and add them to a small pot with about 100ml of rapeseed oil. Heat this over a low heat for about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow the sage to infuse for about 2 hours. Once it has infused strain of the sage leaves and discard them. For the soup In a large pot on medium heat add a little oil and then add the onions and a pinch of salt. Allow to cook over a gentle heat for about 5 minutes. After this add the celery and the leek one at a time and West Kerry Live 15

Dingle Notes Richie Williams Enterprise Town Exhibition. The Enterprise Town Exhibition organised and sponsored by Bank Of Ireland in the Pobal Scoil Hall on Friday evening last was a tremendous success. Over 60 tables were occupied by small and medium sized business and community groups displaying their goods and services and interacting with each other sharing good and bad experiences and tips on how to successfully promote and expand their various enterprises. Popular rugby commentator Brent Pope was the special guest and Kerry footballer Shane Enright presented Scoil Caitlin Naofa Cill Mhic a Domhnaigh students with awards for their winning entry in the Banks Bizworld Competition for National Schools. Rinceoiri Na Ríochta and many local musicians provided the entertainment for an event which should be repeated every few years to highlight the enterprise that is happening here in Corca Dhuibhne. Comhgairdeas le gach einne a bhí páirteach sa taispeantas iontach seo imbliana. Maritime Weekend. The annual MARITIME WEEKEND over the Bank Holiday period features a series of interesting talks based in the Dingle Oceanworld Meeting Rooms. On Saturday 28th at 2p.m. Trade,Ships,Piracy and Plunder are the topics followed at 3.30 by an illustrated talk on the Irish Antarctic Expedition. On Sunday 29th at 12.30 Smuggling in Dingle in the Eighteenth Century is the topic with Dr Conor Brosnan as lead speaker. Books. In recent weeks no fewer than 3 locally scripted books were launched and all make great reading and an ideal Christmas present for people at home or abroad. Pupils from Pobal Scoil Corca Dhuibhne researched and published a book of interviews with the tribal elders of Corca Dhuibhne titled When I was Young/Nuair a Bhios Og. Trevis Gleeson who resides beside Milltown Bridge compiled and edited Dingle Dinners which contains dinner menus from 26 different chefs 16 West Kerry Live

based in the Peninsula. And more recently John O’Connor a native of The Wood launched his long awaited book titled Craftsman Furniture From a Dingle Workshop. All publications are available in the usual local outlets and highly recommended for ones own reading or as gifts to interested parties. Awards. Congratulations to all the local Restaurants, Guest Houses and Retail Outlets who have been honoured at various award ceremonies over the past few months. It just proves what good service, quality cuisine and exceptional facilities we are so lucky to have here in the Peninsula. Keep up the good work everybody and the rewards will follow!!!. Tidy Towns. Some bags of household litter have been left at the Bottle Bank over the past while and when attacked by animals and birds make a real mess in the surrounding area. We appeal to the culpits to dispose of all rubbish in the appropriate manner and remind those offenders that cameras are in operation at the Bottle Bank which will result in court appearance when people are identified. The Dog Toilets appear to have been a success as a noticeable improvement is apparent on our streets but we remind canine owners to dispose of their bags in the nearest litter bin and not in the toilet trays. Business Chamber. The Developments in Bridge Street will when completed give a welcome boost to that end of town both visually and commercially as will the proposed extended car park off Green Street. We continue to appeal to those working in town to please consider parking their vehicles in the perimeter of town and make parking spaces in town easier to find for shoppers and people attending various service facilities and appointments. Each parking space in the town centre streets can be used at least 20 times daily if available and not clogged up all day by careless long term parking by one vehicle. And can I remind cyclists, runners and walkers to use some form of high vis clothing as safety on our roads is everybody responsibility. Mile Buiochas.

He later moved to England and in 1848 he married Alicia Kellett in Monkstown, Dublin. There is no record of how Thomas Fowler met his death and speculation is futile. The only reference to his passing is found in the Kerry Evening Post which simply states, ‘ Died. On Thursday last (August 1, 1844) on board the Lynx, man of war brigantine, in Dingle Harbour, Mr. Thomas Fowler, Purser’. On a separate note, the HMS Stromboli, a wooden paddle sloop commissioned in 1840, left its name on a submerged rock off Dunmore Head and the late Danny Sheehy recounted the following information on how the rock got its name. “The Stromboli Rock has two peaks and it is always under water, by maybe two fathoms and it breaks in bad weather. The British had a coast guard vessel here known as the Stromboli and it guarded the coast of Kerry and Cork. They took on local pilots in different areas and they had a pilot on board who was from near Coláiste Íde in Dingle harbour and his name was Joseph O'Flaherty. Anyway, they were coming through the Blasket Sound, and it must have been bad weather, and they heard a bang but continued. The ship struck something but the didn't take in any water. They brought the ship over to Plymouth, took it out of the water and they found a big chunk of rock in the hull of the boat that stopped the water from getting in.

It is traditional for people to visit graveyards and cemeteries at this time of year to remember family, friends or neighbours who have died and, perhaps, to browse some of the other headstones. A memorial to a Royal Navy crewman stands partially hidden by a holly bush in the central area of Raheenyhooig burial ground, across the harbour from Dingle town. Part of the inscription reads; ‘Thomas Fowler R N Chief clerk of HM Brigantine Lynx who died in Dingle Bay in 1844.’ Additional inscribed information shows the deceased was a native of Southampton and died on 31 July, aged 33. The nineteenth century Royal Navy brigantine Lynx was built in Portsmouth in 1833 and served on the Irish coast for a period. Why was the Lynx in Dingle that year? Was she on an official visit or simply taking on stores and how did Thomas Fowler die? Further research reveals a fascinating chapter of social history surrounding an event that stunned the Catholic Church and its members, both locally and nationally. It generated such hatred towards one individual that two Royal Navy vessels were dispatched to Dingle to support local police and militia in anticipation of civil disturbances or even murder. The individual at the centre of this controversy was the Rev. Denis Leyne Brasbie, Catholic curate of the then Kilmalkedar parish, nine kilometers north west of Dingle. He decided to renounce his Catholic priesthood and become a member of the Church of Ireland. For ten years prior to this there had been a well-organised and well-funded proselytising campaign on the Dingle Peninsula which met with considerable success in converting locals to Protestantism, but the conversion of a Catholic priest was inconceivable locally. The Rev Brasbie was due to read his public recantation in St. James’s Church, off Dingle’s Main Street, on Sunday, 21 July 1844. One account of the events of that day is taken from the Cork Constitution newspaper of Saturday 27 July 1844. That account is featured in William J. O’Neill Daunt’s book Ireland and her Agitators. The local magistrates had been informed that ‘the mob were determined to execute Lynch law on the priest on his road to the church’. Sailors and marines from the Royal Navy ships Stromboli, which was anchored in Ventry Harbour, and the Lynx, in Dingle Harbour, lined the route to the church with their ‘drums and colours’ and they were ‘armed to the teeth’. This show of strength ‘astonished’ the townspeo20 West Kerry Live

The British were very annoyed about this and very annoyed with Flaherty and they summoned him over to England and questioned him. But he was smart enough for them and said they didn't have this rock marked on their charts. He retained his job. Then they sent over some people and they found the rock or reef or whatever. They put it on their charts and decided to call it Stromboli Rock”.

Celebrating World Vegan Day! Irene Ní Fhlannúra The first day of November is World Vegan Day - a day in which “veganism” is celebrated across the globe, highlighting the good things about being a vegan and putting the spotlight on a way of life that has been adapted by millions of people all over the world. Incidentally, hope you didn’t miss out on October 10th, which was World Porridge Day, mark it in your diary for next year! A vegan diet is solely plant-based, avoiding all foods derived from animals, birds, fish or insects - ruling out meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, seafood, honey and chocolate-covered ants! For nonvegans it may be difficult to fathom why you would restrict your diet to this extent but for many who embrace the vegan diet it offers an opportunity to explore the variety and diversity of whole foods and the amazing health benefits sourced from the plant kingdom. The typical modern diet of processed, refined and artificial foods is, nutritionally speaking, more restrictive than a well-balanced vegan diet, in that it lacks the vitality and nutrition that comes from real food. However, veganism too has fallen prey of food-processing trickery with meat substitutes such as Quorn (manufactured from soil mould) and TVP (textured vegetable protein mainly from soy protein isolates) being as weird as any other food “substitutes” on the market. Bottom line, if it hasn’t grown, flown, ran or swam, it probably isn’t food, in its true sense. The greatest advantage of the vegan diet is that it exceeds the 5-a-day quota of fruit and vegetables. The food authorities and health departments of the U.S.A and U.K, with Ireland following suit, have advocated this miserable target for years, so much so that now a small bottle of orange juice (processed) counts for one of your five, as does canned peas (processed) and other altered fruits, vegetables and grains! In reality, five fruit and vegetables per day represents a minimum intake of fresh produce required by a healthy adult. A figure of 7-10 portions of fresh vegetables with some whole fruit (not juice) included is more in line with the genuine needs of an adult to maintain health and prevent many chronic diseases. A vegan wholefood diet is more likely to meet these targets over the course of the day, every day. Another plus for the vegan diet is the regular inclusion of wholegrains and pulses (beans, lentils and chickpeas) to meet protein requirements otherwise sourced from animal products. Not only do we increase our fibre intake and get more vitamins and minerals from these foods, plant protein is easier to digest than flesh and is a more sustainable protein source than livestock, poultry and fish. Protein intake remains one of the biggest concerns of those considering a vegan diet. The confusion comes from the long-held belief that animal-based proteins are the only foods that provide all essential amino acids. While our bodies can manufacture most amino acids needed, essential amino acids cannot be made by the body and as a result must come from our food. Combining wholegrains with pulses can provide all essential amino acids as can including foods such as Quinoa and Amaranth to the vegan pot. Vegan fat is also from healthier sources such as seeds, nuts, avocados, coconut and olives which means the body has a varied supply of fats which includes omega 3, 6 and 9 (often deficient in a Western diet). Essential fats such as EPA and DHA are most readily absorbed from omega 3 found in fish oils. However, fat known as ALA from flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds are converted to active forms of omega 3 in the body once consumed regularly in vegan meals. Minerals – calcium, zinc, iron and iodine can easily be sourced from plant-based foods, including sea vegetables, and are not exclusive to the meat and fish-eating populations. Vitamin B12 shortfalls are common in vegan diets as best sources come from red meat and liver. However, vitamin B12 deficiency is a problem shared by the general population due aging, stress, certain prescription drugs and poor diet that warrants observation and supplementation when levels are low for both vegans and non-vegans alike The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes as the top three causes of premature death in our population. It is also widely accepted by health authorities that these can be attributed to diet and lifestyle choices and are mostly preventable. In a society which is in a downward health spiral despite great advances in medicine, we must acknowledge that while we may be living longer, we are also dying over a longer period of time. There seems to be an acceptance that chronic illness is inevitable and how it manifests is the luck of the draw. 22 West Kerry Live

The onus to prevent illness has been overwhelmed by the need to treat illness as we get sicker, fatter and less resilient by the day. An enormous amount of research indicates that plant-based eating reduces the risk of all chronic diseases, improves outcomes and recovery yet education and information is slow to reach the public domain. While we wait, we can improve our own health status by simply eating more plants and a wider variety of whole foods. If the World Vegan Day on November 1st provides us with inspiring recipes and ideas on how to include more plant-based foods in our diet let us, omnivores, connect with our vegan side and eat up! Your pre and post treatment program will be discussed in detail at your consultation. Image Skincare is used and adored by many celebrities. It is the "go to" range for make up artists to prep their clients skin and help the make up sit well and last longer.

Cosmetic vs. cosmeceutical skincare – what’s the difference?

Image is a cosmeceutical skincare brand, meaning it can penetrate the layers of the skin deeper then a cosmetic brand. Simply put, a cosmetic skincare brand has only a temporary effect on your skin – whether this is soothing, hydration, tightening or smoothing. When you wash your face and remove the products the benefits are largely removed as it sits on the surface of the skin. It doesn’t mean that the brand you use on a day-to-day basis is bad or ineffective – it just means they are better suited for maintenance rather than treating specific surface based conditions such as, acne, wrinkles, dehydration etc. A cosmeceutical skincare brand such as Image contain more ingredients that work in the deeper layers of your skin and have an effect on your skin works and how it behaves. The ingredients used in cosmeceutical skincare start a process such as collagen production for example. These types of skincare are excellent for tackling persistent skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, scarring, loss of elasticity, pigmentation and photo-damage and ageing.

chnó le chéile phósfadh an bheirt. Muna ndéanfadh ní bheidís le chéile.

Chugat an Púca Cheiliúrtaí an fhéile seo le tinte cnámha agus cluichí agus scéalta púcaí.

Chuiridís cnóite isteach sa tine chomh maith ag luath ainmneacha leo agus dá bhfanfaidís le chéile bheadh pósadh le ceiliúradh, ach dá léimfeadh ceann amach b’shin deireadh leo.

Oíche Shamhna, oíche idir dhá shaol. Oíche púcaí agus scéalta. Ceann d’fhéiltí móra na bliana is ea Oíche Shamhna - an oíche deirneach den bhfómhar agus bhigil Féile na Naomh Uile, an chéad lá do Shamhain. Samhain a thugadh na Ceiltigh ar an am seo den mbliain. Am idir dhá shaol. An éiginnteacht ag tabhairt faoin gheimhreadh agus an doircheacht i ndúluachair na bliana agus chomh maith iad ag ceilliúradh tabharaistí agus flúirse an Fhómhair le Tinte Cnámha. Leanann an ceiliúradh le meascán do chluichí traidisiúnta agus cluichí nua aimseartha. Na cluichí traidisiúnta. Bhíodh alán cluichí ar siúl ag na leanaí agus na déagóirí. Seo cuid acu:

Bhí alán cluichí agus piseoga eile ag baint leis an dtráth seo. Dá bhfhéachfadh cailín isteach sa scathán Oíche Shamhna ag meán oíche agus greim a bhaint as úll, b’fhéidir go gcífeadh sí scáil an fhir a bheadh mar chéile aici sa scáthán. Bhí cluiche ana mhaith eile acu leis chun soiléiriú nó fís d’fháil ar an am a bhí le teacht, ar a ndán. Chuirtí sé fochupán i line ar an mbord, uisce i gceann acu, cré i gceann eile, fáinne i gceann eile, páipéar i gceann eile, airgead i gceann eile agus paidirín i gceann eile. Chuirfí púicín ort agus stiúrófaí go dtí an mbord tú agus roghnófá ceann des na fochupáin. Dá roghnófá an t-uisce raghfá thar sáile. Dá roghnófá an chré chaillfí go luath tú, go saoradh Dia sinn. Dá roghnófá an paidrín raghfá le sagartóireacht nó sna mná rialta. Dá roghnófá an t-airgead bheithfeá saibhir agus an páipéar b’shin bochtanas agus gan dabht pósadh ab ea an fáinne.

Aon oíche dhéag agus oíche le h-áireamh idir oíche shamhna agus oíche le Mártan. In onóir Naomh Mártan De Tours mhairítí cearc nó sicín nó lacha agus d’ití é. Ó Mhárthain Féile Má bhís ag dul go dtí an Oireachtas agus ar ndóigh beidh scata agaibh, beidh Féile Ceoil ar an mBuailtín le barra bua a chur ar an tseachtain ar an nDomhnach. Beidh an Féile aon lae ag cur ceoil agus amhráin ar fáil dóibh siúd a bheidh i láthair agus beidh taispeáintaisí ealaíona agus ceardaíochta ann. Tá súil againn gur tús é seo a mheadóidh agus tá slí dá leithéid. Baintear an- shásamh as Scoil Cheóil an Earraigh a bhíonn go binn coitianta. Cuireann na Féilte seo le saol agus cleachtadh an cheantair le linn dúbhluachar an gheimhridh, na laetheannta gearra agus na hoícheanta fada. Bí ann agus ní bheidh aon díombá ort, a deirtear liom. Bás Fuair an fear graoi John Bambury bás fé shíocháin gan pian an tseachtain seo caite. Ard fhear b’ea John. Bhí trí mbliana déag agus cheithre ficid slánuithe aige seachtain sara bhfuair sé bás. Múinteóir foirgneóireachta agus adhmadóireachta b’ea é a bhí thar barr lena lámha agus lena cheann. Bhí sé blianta ag múineadh sa Daingean agus i gCill Orglan. Bhí baint aige le scata tograí pobail agus príomháideach. Bhí sé bainteach le tús a chur leis an láthair oideachais fén aer i gCeapach na Laoi, Séipéal Naomh Eoin i dTrá Lí agus láthair pobail na Feóthanaí. Bhíodh sé ag múineadh ranganna adhmadoireachta Oíche i scata láthracha agus bhíodh freastal mór ar a ranganna teagaisc. Fear fial agus cleachtúil bea é. Bhíomair an- mhór le chéile. Is mó ráig drabhláis agus beartas aithféiseach go rabhamair bainteach leo. Ní raibh focal crosta eadrainn riamh- sin an fhírinne ghlan. An- imreoir galf b’ea é – luigh sé leis an ngalf tréis bianta ag imirt chaide i gCiarraí agus i gCorcaigh, An Léigiún, Na Rathallaigh 7rl. An- imreoir pócair b’ea é agus bheadh ag imirt go maidin. Chuireadh sé geallta ar chapail coitianta, airgead beag a ainmneódh an chéad trí chapall. Bhí an- chur amach aige ar na capaill agus is mó a uair a dhein sé buillín.

arsa Mícheál ‘le imreoirí mar Paidí ‘Bán’ Ó Brosnacháin, Liam Ó Cathasaigh agus Seán Ó Brosnacháin. Imreóirí eile a bhí ina ngaiscígh ag scoil na mBráthar ná Tomás ‘Gega’ Ó Conchúir, Timinín ‘Deas’ Ó Brosnachain, agus Bill Dillon, arsa an Feirtéarach. B’seo le Mícheál go Londain Shasana agus é i mbláth a óige. Chuir sé fé i Chelsea ach ‘ní mar a bhfuil lucht an airgid.’ Ní fada gur bhuail sé leana ghrá geal Peig Ní Shíthigh a bhí ag obair i Londain agus ina comharsa sa Daingean aige. Blianta beaga ina dhiaidh phósadar, ar Aoine an 13ú lá. ‘Dúradh linn go leanfadh mí-ádh sinn’, arsa Peig. ‘Ní hamhlaidh a bhí ach a mhalairt,’ ar sí. Bhí beirt chlainne, buachaillí ortha, atá ‘ar scor anois’. Chaith Mícheál agus Peig triocha trí bliain i Chelsea.Théadh Mícheál go dtí cuid dos na cluichí sacair i Stanford Bridge agus bhí aithne aige ar an mbeirt imreóirí, na céad daoine a bhí ag tuilleamh céad púnt sa tseachtain, ag imirt sacair, b’iad sin Gerry Hynes ó Chelsea agus Tommy Trinder a bhí ar fhoireann Fulham. Bhí Trinder ina fhear grinn gairmiúil tréis a laetheanta sacair. ‘Bíonn sé ag cur síos coitianta ar laetheanta a óige’, arsa Peig ‘ach ní aon díobháil é sin.’ ‘Táim lán tsásta i ndea- shláinte agus dea chomharsain’, anseo in Ard Na Caithne’, arsa Mícheál. ‘Bhaineas taithneamh as mó shaol go dtí seo’, ar sé. Cad fé Éire cheistíos? ‘Ba thrua mar a caitheadh leis an Dr Noel Browne’ agus cuir sé an mhilleán ar De Valera de bharr toradh an Chogaidh Eacnamaíoch in Éirinn. ‘Tá seasca hocht bliana caite againn fé shíocháin, arsa Mícheál agus é ag caitheamh an tsúil mhealltach ar Pheig.

Is mó duine gur réitigh sé cead pleanála dhóíbh. Bhí daoine ceanúil air ins gach áird. Bhí sé an- mhór le Séamus Mac Duibhir a bhí ina phríomh Fheidhmeannach ar Choiste Gairm Oideachais Chairraí. ‘Má bhí fadhb le réiteach ag Mac Duibhir b’é Seán Ó Bambaire an fear a réiteódh’.

Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs Deirdre Daly

effective for reducing any accompanying inflammation of the mucous membranes. Boneset also alleviates a dry cough with little or no expectoration, laryngitis and difficult breathing as it clears the upper respiratory tract of mucous congestion. As a bitter tonic the herb is good for indigestion, for the liver and for constipation. It is also good for rheumatic pain and fibromyalgia again that deep-seated aching pain in the bones and muscles that can occur with these conditions. Boneset’s supreme talent lies in its ability to lower fever and alleviate achy pain in the body. While heavy colds and flu need to run their course the herb can alleviate the symptoms and rather than being incapacitated for two weeks or more you may find the fever and other symptoms breaking in two days.

Boneset; Eupatorium perfoliatum Parts Used; Dried aerial parts Family; Asteracea There are a number of herbs we can take to maintain our immune system as cold and flu season approaches. Some of these we have to hand from the kitchen cupboard, such as, thyme and garlic which are both anti-infective and fresh ginger which warms the lungs and peripheral parts of the body, promotes expectoration and eases aches and pains. Other easily available herbs include a blend of elderflower, peppermint and yarrow, which is a well-known remedy for the onset of cold and flu symptoms and together act as expectorant, immune stimulant and diaphoretic with the latter action promoting sweating. This happens generally in a subtle way allowing the body to release heat through the skin and urinary tract bringing down and cooling any feverish symptoms. Boneset though lesser known is also a great herb for many of the flu symptoms, such as fever, pains and aches and inflammation of the mucous membranes. Only the dried herb in flower should be used as inherent toxicity is reduced in the drying process. Boneset similar to elderflower is an immune stimulant thus strengthening the body to deal with the illness. It is a specific for heavy colds and influenza and is excellent for the pains and aches that accompany feverish colds and flu. While boneset is not used to heal bones it does help those achy joints during influenza, which may be where it’s common name came from. When there is fever involved it is important to drink the teas hot, which allows the body to sweat out the fever clearing heat and infection from the body. The cold tea is more 36 West Kerry Live

Few of us escape the yearly cold/s, or/and flu type illnesses but it is important to be prepared in order to reduce their severity. If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffers relentless relapses or find it difficult to shake off the worst effects in two or three days, then it is important to strengthen your immune system more generally as a long-term approach. Outside of a good diet, adequate exercise, stress free living! and adequate sleep, immune strengthening and tonic herbs may be called for from time to time. This will help you avoid or reduce the severity of these annoying (at least in terms of the common cold) or potentially life threatening illnesses. Preparation and dosage: Boneset can be made into a syrup for coughs, chest pain with colds and flu and sore throat. Hot infusions are generally better for lowering fevers with cold infusions for inflamed mucous membranes Boneset tastes very bitter so add honey if preferred Tincture dosage 2-4ml 3x daily Safety considerations; long-term and high doses of boneset should be avoided. High doses may cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Boneset may cause allergic reaction in people sensitive to the Asteracea family. Only the dried herb should be used. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Tension Headaches

Eddie O’Grady

Eddie O’Grady There are numerous causes of headaches. Often the exact mechanism cannot be identified. One type of headache is the ‘’tension headache’’ which can be due to muscle tension and trigger points in the neck muscles and/or shoulder muscles. At the base of the skull there is a group of muscles, known as the suboccipital muscles. These four pairs of muscles are responsible for subtle movements between the skull and first and second vertebrae in the neck. The suboccipital muscles commonly become tense and tender due to factors such as eye strain, wearing new eyeglasses, poor ergonomics at a computer workstation, grinding of the teeth during sleep, slouching posture, and trauma (such as a whiplash injury). Tension/trigger points in these muscles can cause headaches in some people. Referred pain from the suboccipital muscles/trigger points often feels like a tight band wrapping around the head above the eyes. Also, tension in these muscles may cause compression of the suboccipital nerve which exits at the base of the skull. So, what can you do to relieve headache pain caused by the suboccipital muscles? Appropriate soft tissue therapy, trigger point release, stretching, posture correction and exercise can help to alleviate tension in the suboccipital muscles.

PLUMBING & HEATING

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

!!

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Small Claims Procedure

Question I am not happy with work that a builder did on my house and will have to pay for someone else to finish the job properly. What can I do to recoup the additional expense? Answer If your original builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to pursue a claim against the builder through the Small Claims Procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without needing to employ a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim is €2,000. The small claims service is provided through local District Court offices.

Dingle 3rd Tuesday every month Dingle: outreach: Outreach service, 3rdofTuesday of the in the old C.B.S Monastry Building , John Street month at Kerry ETB Centre, Rice House

Anyone who has purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business may submit a claim using the Small Claims Procedure. You can make claims for faulty goods or bad workmanship, for minor damage to property, and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties, for example, a holiday home. Businesses involved in disputes with other businesses can also use the Small Claims Procedure. To make a claim, you complete an application form which you can download from the Small Claims Procedure section of courts.ie or get from the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court office. Make sure you use the correct name and address of the person or company you want to make the claim against. The completed form and a fee of €25 should be lodged with the Small Claims Registrar. You can also apply online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person you are making the claim against. If the other party does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed and you can apply for a court order in your favour. If your claim is disputed, the Registrar will contact you and let you have a copy of the reasons why the other party is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is then set for a court hearing in the District Court. KWD Recycle Right

Following on from the success of the “KWD Kids Recycling” programme in 2010, KWD Recycling are excited to launch their new “Recycle Right” initiative. The goal of this initiative is to further educate young people on the importance of recycling .This new drive is for 3rd and 4th class primary school students in particular as it is in line with the school’s current curriculum strand, A Sense of Place – Strand Environmental Awareness. Their aim is to enable students and teachers to understand the role of recycling and how to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly and responsibly. The overall objective is to enable students to champion best practice when it comes to recycling so they can transfer this knowledge to home and also influence greater recycling within their schools. The launch for “Recycle Right” initiative took place in Fossa National School on Friday in the form of a fun-filled waste and recycling workshop, and KWD Recycling are aiming to visit all primary schools in Kerry and beyond in the coming months. It was clear from the expressions on the children’s faces throughout, that the workshop was a great success. The students were very enthusiastic to learn about waste and recycling through the use of informative videos 46 West Kerry Live

detailing the process of what happens to their waste and recycling, from what you place into each bin to the bin collection, and to what happens to all of the different types of waste when it comes back to the recycling facility. The waste segregation game proved to be a great hit with the students with some discussions arising amongst them when deciding the correct bin to use for some items. It is safe to say that some learnings were taken from this game which reinforces the aim of this workshop. Each student received a KWD “Recycle Right” 18 page booklet which contains lots of fun facts, with information and quizzes about waste and recycling, which is great fun and will ensure that the learning continues. They also received a personal certificate for attending the workshop. It is important to teach people about the latest recycling practices and where better to start than with the younger generation. There is no other initiative by any other company or government body like this anywhere in Ireland and KWD Recycling want to change that trend, and in turn educate the children of today for a better tomorrow. KWD Recycling are also running a competition to build your own Kenny the KWD truck where the winning school will win a free iPad and a field trip to the new state of the art recycling facility . You will find all the instructions on how to build Kenny the truck plus access to many more games and quizzes online at www.kwdkids.com For anyone who would like to get more information about this initiative, please visit www.kwdkids.com

The Mistletoe Matchmaker le

Felicity Hayes-McCoy Seo leabhar nua le Felicity, an tríú ceann sa tsraith. ‘It’s winter on the Finfarran peninsula and, as Cassie Fitzgerald, fresh from Toronto, is about to discover, there’s more to Christmas on the west coast of Ireland than mistletoe and mince pies. Enchanted by the small town where her dad was born, Cassie gets involved in a competition for the best local Winter Fest, and joins local librarian Hanna Casey’s writing group in Lissbeg Library. But the more she’s drawn into the town’s run-up to Christmas, the more questions Cassie encounters. Why does her sweet-tempered grandmother Pat find it so hard to express her feelings? What’s going on between Pat and her miserly husband Ger? What happened in the past between the Fitzgeralds and Hanna’s redoubtable mother Mary Casey? And what about Shay: handsome, funny, smart and intent on making Cassie’s stay as exciting as he can. Is he the one for her? As Christmas Eve approaches, Cassie discovers that love, family and friendship bring the real magic to the festive season - even if the locals of Lissbeg need an outsider to help them see it.’ - Hachette Agus beidh fáilte romhat go dtí an seoladh le Helen Ní Shé in Óstán Cheann Sibéal, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh 4.00 - 5.00 tráthnóna Dé hAoine 5ú Samhain An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979
