Five paintings by West Kerry native John Joe Sheehy have been selected for inclusion in the world-renowned National Collection of the British Arts Council. Originally from Baile Eaglaise, John Joe left Kerry for London in the 1970s aged just 16 years to seek work. Like many an emigrant, he worked on "the buildings" but eventually fell on hard times and found himself homeless for a period. He sold The Big Issue magazine on the streets of London and was encouraged by that organisation to explore art. He was 51 years old when he discovered a new talent and passion. He dived headlong into painting and spent years creating work in his basement flat, never intending it to be seen by the general public. Eventually a gallery owner got wind of this man living in Holloway surrounded by hundreds of his own paintings and invited him to exhibit. Many of the works draw on his memories of growing up in West Kerry and have featured in numerous exhibitions in recent years.

Since he took up painting John Joe has produced a vast body of work that also includes printmaking and sculpture, in addition to playwriting, poetry and music.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 15th May will be the Irish documentary 'Making The Grade'. The film in-
vites us into the world of the piano lesson. Every year teachers and students throughout Ireland prepare for graded musical exams. These exams can be pleasing for some but daunting for others. Each student has their own particular goal but reaching Grade Eight is considered a pinnacle. This endearing and uplifting documentary explores the bond between piano teachers and their pupils as they struggle through these grades. This is a story of the trans-formative power of music and the pride and happiness it provides both the students and teachers. It may inspire us all to keep making the grade. The following week on Tuesday 22nd the feature will be the Wes Anderson directed stop-motion-animated film 'Isle Of Dogs'. An outbreak of canine flu in Japan leads all dogs to be quarantined on an island. A boy (voice of Koyu Rankin) journeys there to rescue his dog Spots (Liev Schreiber), and gets help from a pack of misfit canines who have also been exiled. His quest inspires a group of dog lovers to expose a government conspiracy. The voice cast also includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Bob Balaban, Greta Gerwig, and Yoko Ono.

Strand Street, Dingle. 066 91 51248 Dingle Notes. Richie Williams DARKNESS INTO LIGHT. The Annual Darkness into Light Walk will start from the Dingle Marina Centre at 4.15a.m. on Saturday morning May 12th and cover the 5km Sli Na Slainte route around town. The turnout has been most impressive over the past 3 years here in Dingle and we appeal to walkers and sponsors to support this nationwide effort on behalf of a wonderful cause called Pieta House. Even if you are not already registered you are most welcome to join in the walk so please make the effort if at all possible. PARKING. We are reliably informed that work to extension the Green Street Car Park will commence shortly and be ready for use within 5/6 weeks. We again appeal this year to all who work in town to park your vehicles on the outskirts of town and not take up valuable spaces in the town centre streets for long periods each day. Research has shown that anyone coming to town for shopping or other business or as tourists on average take up a parking space for a maximum time of one hour. This results in every vacant space being used at least 10 times every day so the benefits of think before you park are in the hundreds to all outlets in Dingle and also contributes to continued employment for a lot of people on a year round basis. FÉILE NA BEALTAINE. Well I will start by saying a big MÍLE BUÍOCHAS to all the volunteers who once again put together a huge programme of wonderful entertainment last weekend here in the Peninsula during Féile Na Bealtaine. Also the committee wish to extend a sincere thank you to all the participants, all who provided venues, to all who attended the events and or helped in any way to ensure the successful running of each and every item on the 5 day programme. And I have to give a special mention to the children in the street parade, their teachers, parents and guiding artists who put so much work into another magical show which was much appreciated by the hundreds of people who lined the streets 6 West Kerry Live
on Sunday last. Roll on Féile 2019!!!. TIDY TOWNS. The work evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the bottle bank at 7p.m. Now that the weather is getting a little warmer the weeds are starting to take over again so we need as much help as possible and ask everybody to help us by keeping their own areas neat and tidy and litter free. THE GLAN PROJECT has been warmly received by most business and service outlets in town and the 2 minute street clean is also showing an improvement in the litter situation in the town centre.. CONCERT. Former Voice of Ireland TV winner JAMES KILBANE will be performing in a CONCERT in St Marys Church in Green Street on Whit Sunday Evening commencing at 8p.m. Tickets will be available from the Presbytery or in the usual local outlets. The church has hosted a number of very successful concerts over the past few years and the voice and sound of James Kilbane should be really suited to the location and what better entertainment could we have in Dingle on a Bank holiday weekend. AWARDS. Comhgairdeachas ó croí do daltaí Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne - Mhollie Ni Loibhead, Síomha Ní hAiniféin, James Ó Dubháin agus Conn Ó Ríogháin a bhuaidh aitheantas i gcomórtas náisiúnta scriobhneóireachta do daltaí meanscoileanna le deanaí. Farming News FARMERS REMINDED TO SUBMIT 2018 BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME ON TIME Farmers are reminded that time is now passing quickly and that the deadline for completing/submitting their 2018 BPS is next Tuesday 15th May 2018. This is an important message, as some may still not realise that they need to do this online, and leaving it to the last minute may be very costly. 2018 is the first year that applications for the BPS and the Transfer of Entitlements are to be done online. Farmers are reminded that they must apply online and if this is for the for the first time in 2018 should be aware that there are two stages in the process – they must first register on www.agfood.ie and when they receive their registration details in the post they must then log on and actually make their BPS application. With the 15 May deadline approaching farmers should be aware of this process, and register / make their application as soon as possible. For many farmers, this may be difficult, as they might either not have a computer, of also, even if they have one, they may not be familiar with these specialised DAFM delivery systems. Should they have any such problems or worries, they are advised to seek out an advisor who is trained to help them, in such cases. ELECTRONIC SHEEP TAGGING TO BECOME MANDATORY The mandatory extension of electronic identification to all sheep has been announced by the Department of Agriculture. Under the new rules will require all sheep sold from October 1, 2018 onwards will have to be identified electronically. This will also include a one-off payment of up to €50 per flock owner for the first purchase of EID tags. Lambs under 12 months of age moving directly to slaughter from the holding of birth will be required to be identified with a single electronic tag. All other sheep will require an EID tag set comprised of two tags – one conventional tag and a corresponding electronic tag. However a conventional tag and an EID bolus will be permitted also. The simplified rules will provide a more robust sheep traceability system and will further support the development and sustainability of the sheep industry. Electronic tag readers and associated software are included as eligible investments in the Targeted Agriculture Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) scheme to assist sheep farmers in flock management, but tag readers are not a requirement for the new sheep identification system. Up to now, all sheep are required to be identified electronically with a full EID tag set. However, an exception is made for lambs slaughtered before reaching the age of 12 months (regardless of the number of movements or interim destinations within the 12 months period), where such lambs may be identified with a single conventional tag. All animals have to be identified by 9 months of age. Under the new arrangements all animals are still required to be identified at 9 months of age. Animals consigned directly from farm of origin to a slaughter plant before 12 months of age can be identified with one electronic tag in the animal’s right ear whilst all other animals must comply with the full EID requirements – (1 conventional tag in the left ear and 1 electronic tag in the right ear). A bolus set comprising an electronic bolus in the stomach of the sheep and a corresponding conventional tag bearing the same number as the bolus may be used as an alternative to an EID tag set. TOP TIPS ON GETTING RID OF RUSHES, DOCKS AND THISTLES Having suffered months, ten months in fact of continuous, much land will suffer from a severe infestation of invasive and possible noxious weeds. Grassland weeds are set to escalate over the next few weeks. Rushes thrived in last year’s wet summer, as they out competed grass on land with low soil fertility. Poached fields and poor grass growth also allowed the docks and thistles to multiply. The seeds left in your pasture in 2017 from the above weeds will readily germinate and spread this year if action is not taken. Growing more grass so it can actively compete with weeds such as rushes, is one way of preventing infestation. An acidic soil does not directly favor rushes, but it will significantly inhibit grass growth, so liming low ph. soils is essential. This should be followed with an application of phosphorus and Potassium where necessary to bring your soil nutrient level to the optimum index 3 level. Drainage, including new drains and cleaning of the existing drainage infrastructure can be an effective weed prevention measure. Identify what is the underlying cause of the waterlogged soil by digging test pits before remedial action such as field drains, sub-soiling or mole drains are considered. 12 West Kerry Live
RUSHES:- The soft rush is the most common of the many rush species. It is recognised by the dense tuft of brown flowers coming from the side of the stems and a continuous white centre (pith) when the stem is peeled back Soft rush can be controlled with MCPA or 2,4-D, applied in June or July when growth conditions are good and weather is suitable. Strong rushes should be cut and removed, with pesticide applied to the regrowth. Weed wiping with a Glyphosate product such as Roundup or Gallup, using a tractor or quad, has the advantage of the product being applied primarily to the target plant. It uses about 1/3 of the amount of pesticide, (compared to boom spraying) and produces much lower losses to waters. For farmers with Low Input Permanent Pasture in GLAS, chemical control of rushes can only be carried out by weed wiping or spot spraying. MCPA is not licenced for use with either of these application methods. DOCKS:- Dock seed can remain viable for over 50 years in soil, have a large root system, and are very opportunistic in terms of where they germinate. Open swards or swards after cutting facilitate light reaching the soil surface which allows germination. Best control of docks will be achieved when docks are actively growing and nutrients are actively being transported to new foliage and roots. If seed stalks are seen on the plant or if the dock has diseased leaves or is under pest attack it is better to cut/top or graze and allow re-growth of the docks before applying chemical. Soil potassium levels should be maintained at index 3, as oversupply of potash favors the higher needs of the dock over grass. Rotating silage ground can also be an effective dock control strategy. Use of herbicides based on dicamba, triclopyr and fluroxypyr (e.g. Dockstar Pro, Ban Dock) will give season-long control of docks plus a wide range of common grassland weeds. Where clover is of consequence, Eagle or Prospect may be applied. If a suitable herbicide is applied to small docks after reseeding, long term control is achieved. CREEPING THISTLES:- Creeping thistle is the most widespread and troublesome of the thistle family. It mainly spreads by creeping roots which can be meters in length but also spreads by wind-blown feathery seeds (July & August). To make matters worse, it can grow new plants from small fragments of its roots thus appearing to explode when reseeding is carried out. They cause most damage by preventing animals grazing around them. Thistles emerge in the spring at different times so topping is a useful tactic to even up the growth stages before spraying. Chemicals such as 2,4-D, MCPA and dicamba reduce top growth but do not translocate down to the roots. For more persistent control use Thistlex, Pastor or Forefront but follow-up sprays will be needed. OVER-LOADED TRAILERS. With the silage season hopefully beginning in the next few weeks, and the need to get slurry out fast, the level of farm traffic on our roads is expected to increase significantly. Farmers are often accused of overloading their trailers, and in fairness, many do. This is a direct result of the prerssures put on them by weather and time constraints. However, they need to be cognisant of these dangers, and reduce the according risks associated with over-loading trailers when towing with cars and 4x4 vehicles as it creates a rick situation not acceptable from them or any other member of the community. The Garda Traffic Corp stresses serious excess loads have been detected as he demonstrated the hi-tech mobile vehicle weighing unit used by the gardaí. The standard car towing a one or twoaxle cattle trailer is designed to carry one cow or two small animals, not six or seven. Farmers were urged to check the Design Gross Vehicle Weight or Maximised Authorised Mass, which is the maximum load a vehicle or trailer can carry in the owner's manual or statutory plate. PROBLEMS RELATING TO STRESSFUL WEATHER Farmer and non-farmer alike with mental health problems of those who find themselves in a seriously stressful situation are advised that "accepting you have a problem" is the first step and "if you get up and going there is light and the light with get brighter and brighter. We all have problems, but if you keep them to yourself, they will only get worse. If you talk to someone, it will help, and the problem can even be resolved. Talk to your advisor, accountant, solicitor, doctor, priest, garda sergeant or anyone else you trust. But talk to someone. Meanwhile, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have announced that a two-week long intensive farm inspection campaign will commence on Tuesday May 8 next with visits to approximately 200 farms focusing on safe working with vehicles and machinery. Over the last 10 years, half of all fatal farm accidents involved vehicles and machinery, while there has been a sharp increase
in quad bike fatalities. FUNDING OF UP TO €200,000 FOR SMALL FOOD & DRINK BUSINESSES Funding of €15m has been announced through the ‘LEADER Food Initiative. Don’t Let Exam Stress Let You Down! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Students, whether the work was done in the last week, month or year, your exam performance comes down to what happens on the day. While it is not the perfect system to evaluate someone’s level of academic competence, it is happening now and hopefully you are well prepared and ready for it! Stress is a natural response to the demands of sitting exams but too much stress and high anxiety levels can have a negative effect on getting what is in your head onto the paper in front of you within the allotted time. Our stress response has been with us for as long as we have lived on the planet and is probably the reason why we are still here, however, the triggers for our “fight or flight” activity and our ability to recover has changed dramatically since we first needed to fight or flee. What was deemed to be a physical threat (real stress) to our survival millions of years ago such as wild animals and natural disasters were rare events allowing us time to process and recover from stressful times. Nowadays, our stress response is being constantly activated by perceived stresses, such as exams, deadlines, mayhem and madness with little time for recovery or repair. This has seen stress-related illnesses and anxiety rates soar, ironically leaving us more vulnerable to a real threat to our survival! It is not too late to support a healthy stress response and the following tips may result in clearer thinking, sharper problem solving and excellent recall during exam time. Magnesium is often referred to as Nature’s tranquilizer – not the kind that would knock a horse, but interestingly abundant in the grass they eat! For us, magnesium is lacking in our diets yet is in high demand during times of stress. It has the ability to relax tense muscles, to dilate blood vessels for easier flow of oxygen to the brain and has a calming effect on neurotransmission, allowing for clearer thinking and rational thinking. Magnesium is found in all leafy vegetables such as dark lettuce leaves, chard and spinach. Also, high in pumpkin seeds and almonds. Sup-
plements can deliver a high therapeutic dose of magnesium in times of stress and are more bioavailable in powdered form as magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate. B- vitamins, are a family of water-soluble vitamins that work together to perform many functions in the body and vitally important for the nervous system. Again, this group of nutrients have been refined out of the modern diets yet are needed by the bucket load in times of high stress. Vitamin B5 is of particular importance for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands and the balanced production of stress hormones. They are typically found in fresh wholefoods – wholegrains, lentils, pulses, lean red meat, fish and liver. Enhance the availability of B vitamins by combining these foods with enzyme-rich salads, steamed greens, watercress or beansprouts. Viridian Supplement High-5 BComplex is a good add-on to a healthy diet during these stressful times.

A lesser-known nutrient, L-Theanine, is responsible for calming and soothing the nervous system without affecting the thought process. The most available source comes from high quality organic green tea which can be further enhanced by adding some lemon balm leaves to the brew. This timely tonic can be consumed hot or cooled, alternating with fresh water throughout the day as hydration is also critical to exam performance and concentration. Another amino acid, glycine, plays an important role in the sleep cycle. Sleep allows for recovery and repair after a stress event such as exams and also allows the brain to process information making it easier to access and recall when needed. Glycine, while available as a supplement, is easily derived from natural food sources such as meat, fish and poultry. Bone broth is an excellent source as the glycine, ready to be absorbed from the liquid stock. Vitamin C from fresh, raw fruits and vegetables helps to replenish adrenal glands and give them a pick-me-up when feeling exhausted. Snacking on fresh strawberries, citrus fruits and saladSystems vegetables is a sure-way to keep a Solar steady supply of this vital nutrient. Yesperformance. with no sunshine, which your exam you ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Maurice Kavanagh Cabs 4 Seater 087-6553399
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
8 Seater 087-3932333
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Between exams and during down times, take time to recover and repair in a calm and quiet environment. Preparing good food, proper sleep, time spent outdoors in nature may seem like a waste of valuable revision time yet is necessary for you to take advantage of the heightened clarity that comes with a well-managed stress response! Best of luck to all students sitting exams, go n-eirí libh go léir!

Mindfulness is something we all possess. Practising Mindfulness gives us the ability to be present in the moment. It enables us to calmly acknowledge and accept our thoughts and feelings and helps facilitate an awareness of the body. In this way we learn to make skilful decisions in how to respond wisely to any given situation rather than acting out based on anger or frustration. The Wild Atlantic Wellness Weekend will inspire you to become more aware about your overall wellbeing. Mindful Workshops, Mindful Walking, Compassionate Communication, learning to live in the moment, Yoga workshops, Art with Yunjee Kim and much much more. These are just some of the many activities that the Wellness weekend has to offer. Festival organisers are very fortunate to have renowned contributors, meditators and fitness instructors helping us with our festival. After a very successful two years working on reducing the plastic waste at the Dingle Food Festival, and a wonderful photographic exhibition ‘Casualties of Convenience’ and film screening of ‘Trashed’ with Jeremy Irons in attendance urging us to take local action, this initiative aims to tackle year round littering of our beautiful landscape with coffee cups.
As we have seen from ‘Blue Planet ll’ and David Attenboroughs plea for us to stop choking our planet with plastic, this is a global issue as well as a local one and it is our responsibility to take action. It is estimated that Ireland sends 2 million disposable coffee cups to landfill every day and as was seen from the County Clean here in Kerry, 30% of rubbish collected on our roadsides was coffee cup waste. While coffee cup lids can be recycled, the cups themselves are lined with plastic so rarely are recycled as there is no facility in Ireland which can process them. The Dingle Cupán is made from used coffee grounds and natural resins and is free from crude oil based binding agents. The grounds are collected daily from coffee shops in Berlin and the cups are produced 26 West Kerry Live

Slí Chorca Dhuibhne is a national way-signed walking route 178km in length which is to be developed as a central part of the tourism industry in the region. It is intended that the Tourism Officer would be employed to assist the committee and stakeholders in managing and upgrading Slí Chorca Dhuibhne to a world standard and to identify new walking routes in conjunction with local groups. Pierce Hoare Ever since way back in 2010 when I saw my first Marvel movie in the cinema, Iron Man 2, I was excited to see more of these movies. I have been able to catch almost all of the films in the series on the big screen (the rest at home), and following these heroes for 8 years has been well worth it just for Infinity War. The movie wastes no time setting up the characters, because there are over thirty of them and you are expected to know them all from the 18 other movies. Instead it jumps right into the action and does not disappoint. I cannot say much about the movie as almost every scene of it should be seen and not spoiled. Every character gets their moment in Infinity War but the antagonist, Thanos, is one of the most interesting to watch. I was afraid they might disappoint as he has been teased for 6 years and some of the other Marvel villains have been a bit lackluster but I was taken aback by Josh Brolin’s performance as the mad titan himself. The plot of the movie is that Thanos is trying to collect all six of the infinity stones, which control six aspects of the universe: Power, Mind, Time, Space, Soul and Reality, and the Avengers and others must stop him. Five of these stones have been seen in other Marvel movies, only adding to the incentive to watch them all (Even Thor: The Dark World). There was a part of the movie that some felt ruined it (which I cannot elaborate on) but I thought it was amazing and made me eager to watch the next run of Marvel movies, making me interested in the newest Ant Man, which I was skeptical on previously. Every actor is brilliant in this, with only Elizabeth Olsen being a bit off with her accent but was fine nonetheless. My favourite of the bunch would have to have been Tom Holland hands down, with him now topping Tobey Maguire as the best Spiderman on film with his performance in Infinity War. The movie is full of awesome scenes and shocking moments, with amazing visuals, especially with Doctor Strange’s powers, and the CGI work was beautiful as always with the Marvel movies. I am excited to see what will come next and how they will expand upon the story they have told and the ones they have set up. I can only recommend this movie to those who have seen the other 18, Marvel movies, spanning over the last ten years, because if you haven’t you will only be sitting there thinking “why is that teenage tree talking?” One last thing I will add that there is an end credits scene and it is important so make sure to catch it, even if it takes a while. Essentially anything that was once living can be composted. however, to avoid generating odours and attracting rodents and flies, it’s best to limit most composting systems to plant based materials - a vegetarian diet for your composter! Composts thrive on a balanced diet of nitrogen-rich green materials (food scraps or grass cuttings) and high-carbon brown materials (dead leaves or straw). Other essential ingredients are moisture (damp but not wet) and air (turn or mix contents once a fortnight). Home composting cuts down on your rubbish bill by diverting plant waste from your black bin, saving you up to 33%. It also encourages you to waste less food in the first place, saving you more money in the process and reducing your eco-footprint. Look up “homemade/DIY compost bin” online for ideas to build your own composter. Beidh muirín breá agat chun glasraí a fhás

A new documentary presented by West Kerry journalist Seán Mac an tSíthigh will tell the extraordinary story of how a Kerryman led the largest manhunt New York had ever seen to capture ‘Son of Sam’, one of America’s most notorious serial killers In the summer of 1976, the ‘Son of Sam’ killer shot his first victim in Pelham Bay, a district of the Bronx, New York. In the thirteen months that followed, he carried out a brutal murder spree that gripped an entire city in terror and made headlines around the world. And one Kerryman, NYPD Deputy Inspector Timothy J. Dowd, was tasked with catching the killer. Timothy Dowd was born in the townland of Ross, outside Castlemaine in 1915, the youngest of five children. He grew up on the small family farm and went to school nearby in Keel. In making the documentary, Mac an tSíthigh and a television crew filmed in Keel last autumn. Tim Dowd’s cousins Gobnait O’ Mahoney and Gerard Sheehan brought Seán to the site of the Dowd’s old homeplace in Ross. The farmhouse is gone but it was on this farm that Margaret and Tim Dowd Snr raised their daughter and four sons. Then in 1923 they made the decision to sell their land and leave Ireland for Boston. Timothy joined the NYPD and rose through the ranks, eventually finding himself at the centre of an extraordinary crime saga. Forty years on, journalist Seán Mac an tSíthigh travels to New York to uncover this incredible story and reveals a hidden hero and the extraordinary service Dowd and his detectives would give to secure their city. ‘Son of Kerry, Son of Sam’ airs Wednesday May 16th at 9.30pm on TG4

Arthritis - Rheumatoid Arthritis vs Osteoarthritis Eddie O’Grady
tests can help your doctor judge the severity of the disease in your body.
Grating sensation. You may hear or feel a grating sensation when you use the joint.
Rheumatoid arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect more than just your joints. It is an autoimmune disease occurring when your immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium , the lining of the membranes that surround your joints. The resulting inflammation causes the synovium to thicken, eventually destroying the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments holding the joint together also weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint loses its shape and alignment.
Treatment There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Recent studies indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early using medications known as disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
Risk factors
It is unknown exactly what starts the process, although a genetic component appears likely. Newly developed medications have greatly improved treatment options. However, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities. Symptoms Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: Tender, warm, swollen joints Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity Fatigue, fever and weight loss Early rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect your smaller joints first — particularly the joints of the fingers and toes. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect many non joint structures. This is the case in about 40 per cent of sufferers. These include: Skin / Eyes / Lungs / Heart / Kidneys / Salivary glands / Nerve tissue / Bone marrow / Blood vessels Rheumatoid arthritis signs and symptoms can vary in severity and may come and go. Periods of increased disease activity, called flare ups, alternate with periods of relative remission — when the swelling and pain fade or disappear. Risk factors Your sex : Women are more prone than men . Age : Can occur at any age, but most common between the ages of 40 and 60. Family history : Increased risk if there is a family history of the disease. Smoking : Cigarette smoking increases your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Obesity: People who are overweight or obese appear to be at somewhat higher risk . Diagnosis and Blood tests People with rheumatoid arthritis often have an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR, or sed rate) or C-reactive protein (CRP), which may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process in the body. Other common blood tests look for rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies. Rheumatoid arthritis can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages because the early signs and symptoms mimic those of many other diseases. There is no one blood test or physical finding alone that confirms diagnosis. Imaging tests Your doctor may recommend X-rays to help track the progression of rheumatoid arthritis in your joints over time. MRI and ultrasound
The types of medications recommended by your doctor will depend on the severity of your symptoms and how long you've had the rheumatoid arthritis. Medications used include : NSAIDs. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Steroids. Corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, reduce inflammation and pain and slow joint damage. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). These drugs can slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and save the joints and other tissues from permanent damage. Common DMARDs include methotrexate (Trexall, Otrexup, Rasuvo), leflunomide (Arava), hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) and sulfasalazine (Azulfidine). Biologic agents. Also known as biologic response modifiers. These are a newer class of DMARDs(Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) .These drugs can target parts of the immune system that trigger inflammation that causes joint and tissue damage. Biologic DMARDs are usually most effective when paired with a nonbiologic DMARD, such as methotrexate. All the above drugs have side effects which need to be monitored. Surgery Medications can slow joint damage due to rheumatoid arthritis. When the damage becomes excessive surgery may need to be considered to repair the damaged joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually deteriorates. Cartilage is a firm, slippery tissue that permits nearly frictionless joint motion. In osteoarthritis, the smooth surface of the cartilage becomes roughed and worn. Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, you may be left with bone rubbing on bone. The disorder most commonly affects joints of the hands, knees, hips and spine.
Factors that may increase your risk of osteoarthritis include: Older age. The risk of osteoarthritis increases with age as joints wear over time. Sex. Women are more likely to develop osteoarthritis, though it isn't clear why. Obesity. Carrying extra body weight contributes to osteoarthritis in several ways, and the more you weigh, the greater your risk. Increased weight puts added stress on weight-bearing joints, such as your hips and knees. In addition, fat tissue produces proteins that may cause harmful inflammation in and around your joints. Joint injuries. Injuries, such as those that occur when playing sports or from an accident, may increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Certain occupations. If your job includes tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint, that joint may eventually develop osteoarthritis. Genetics. Some people inherit a tendency to develop osteoarthritis. Bone deformities. Some people are born with malformed joints or defective cartilage, which can increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Summary - Rheumatoid vs Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune response where your body mistakenly attacks its own joints. Osteoarthritis is more or less due solely to wear on a particular joint over time. Aside Sometimes MRI results or Xray results state there is osteoarthritis present. With age most of us have some level of osteoarthritis due to wear on our joints. The important thing which your doctor will discuss with you is whether this level is normal for your age. A person can have mild osteoarthritis with no pain or symptoms and may have nothing to worry about.
Eddie O’Grady
Osteoarthritis symptoms can usually be effectively managed, although the underlying process cannot be reversed. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and other treatments may slow progression of the disease and help improve pain and joint function. When joint pain and damage is severe, doctors may suggest joint replacement surgery. Symptoms Osteoarthritis symptoms often develop slowly over time. Signs and symptoms may include: Pain. Your joint may hurt during or after movement. Tenderness. Your joint may feel tender when you apply light pressure to it. Stiffness. Joint stiffness may be most noticeable when you wake up in the morning or after a peCovering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street riod of inactivity. Loss of flexibility. You may not be able to move your joint through its full range of motion.

We wish to thank Annascaul Walks for their guidance and information during the organisation process, and their leadership on the day and helping everyone to safely complete route A. We would also to thank Ashes Butchers Annascaul for the catering, and the freshly cooked Annascaul Sausages, Genie Farrel for the lovely soup
and everyone who provided baking. We would also like to thank everyone involved in organising this event. By all accounts this was an enjoyable day out and we look forward to seeing you at the Great Annascaul Walk 2018 !

And great food in local restaurants and shop local too ! Here's to a great tourist season in the Dingle Peninsula. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine !
THE DINGLE WAY We are blessed to have such a wonderful walk on our doorstep going the entire length of the Dingle Peninsula. The Dingle Way committee are organising a WORKDAY on the Dingle Way in the next few weeks. Date will be advertised and everybody is welcome to help Currently a survey of signs and other underfoot problems is being carried out, some signs need to be replaced or upgraded and the yellow man signs repainted in some areas to ensure that nobody goes astray along the way. Well done to Joe O Dwyer has done great work on some sections of the walk which were very bad underfoot. And it must be said that without the goodwill of the landowners and the farmers along the way, this walking trail would not be possible. And they all deserve our thanks and acknowledgement. If you have any query or any suggestion or you want to join the Dingle Way Committee - Please Telephone www.dinglehorseriding.com/booking John Ahern – 087 653 8548.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Féile na Bealtaine Bhí Féile na Bealtaine ar fheabhas arís i mbliana. Chuir Cathaoirleach na Féile An Dr Peadar Ó Fionnáin fáilte roimh gach duine tráthnóna Déardaoin agus mhol Rachel Holsted ó Ealaíon na Gaeltacha a fheabhas is a réitíotar an Fhéile. ‘Sé an tAire Stáit Breandán ó Grífín a oscail an Fhéile. Labhair sé cúpla focal Gaeilge ach is Bhéarla ar fad a bhí aige as sin amach.Tuigim go raibh go leor daoine díombádh. Oíche Déardaoin ‘oíche mhór’ ‘Ceol Fhoireann agus Cór,’ An Daingin a bhí ar a dtriail in Óstán na Sceilge. ‘Bhíodar’ go hiontach dar leis an ealaíontóir agus aisteoir Áine Ní Mhuineacháin. Ba í seo an mhór ócáid don gceolfhoireann atá ag cur snas ar a gcuid saothair le tamall. Mhol an stiúrthóir Gabor Pèli ón Ungáir, a bhunaigh an cheolfhoireann, éifeacht na gceoltoirí agus an chóir. ‘Táim chomh sásta’, ar sé. Ba léir ná raibh aon dearmad ar Gabor. Léirigh an slua mór a mbuíochas as, ‘ard theaspáinteas’. Bhí suas le naocha ócáid ar chlár na Féile. Bhí filíocht, amhránaíocht, ceol, seónna aonair, bannaí ceóil, greann, seoladh leabhair agus teaspeáintisi siar go heirbeall. Uaireanta bhíodh trí ócáid ar bun sa Daingean ag an am céanna ach ar ámharaí an tsaoil bhí deirtear liom, freastal maith ar gach ceann acu. Bhí míreanna don bhféile ar bun ón Leitriúch go dtí Dún Chaoin. Tráthnóna Dé hAoine bhí am agam féachaint arís ar an scannán ‘Song of Granite’, mar a bhfuil an sár amhránaí Seosaimh Ó hÉanaí ina bhun agus ina bharr. Ina dhiaidh sin baineadh sásamh as na solaistí blasta agus comhluadar cleachtúil a bhí san chaife, ‘Nead an Dreóilín’. Oíche hAoine i Halla na Feothanaí bhí ‘Síbín’ ag baint spréacha as cheol, amhráin agus rince. Tá amhrán an- shuimiúil cumtha ag Meabh Ní Bheaglaoi go gcloisfear go leor fé, tá súil agam, 'Amhrán na nGael'. Naonúr ceoltóiri agus amhránaithe a bhí ar barra ag Síbín gach duine acu níos fearr ná a chéile. Deirim-se fuinneamh agus allas leat. Triúr ban mean -aosta ‘sea na ‘Nualas’. Bhíodar go maith ach bheadh siad níos fearr dá leanfaidís leis an ngreann. Is dócha gur ó shaol eile iad ach bhain an slua an- shásamh astu, seachas mé féin. Bhí Conor Linehan ar fheabhas. É coitianta ag cumadh ceoil don scoth. Bhí taispeáintaisí éalaíona éagsúla ann mar ceann a bhí ag Lisa Feirtéar in Ionad an Bhlascaoid, a léirigh anchaighdeán, ceann in Abha na Scáil mar a raibh saothair ann, Monica Phelan, Kate Landers Marie Kennedy, Úna ní She, Abe Boland aguas Eloise
Flannery. Tá pictúir ag Eloise do ghabhar. Ba cheart do lucht Aonaigh greim a fháil air, mar tá sé thar barr.Tá ceann mór groi ag Marie Kennedy a oirfeadh in óstan nó a leithéid. Pictiúirí deasa ag ealaíontóirí aitheanta.
8. Ná altaigh bia, dtí go gcaithir é. 9. Ní dheineann béal dúnta aighneas. 10. Imeóidh an seanóir is a cháil ‘na dhiaidh, is imeóidh a bhfuil beó, is a dtáinigh riamh.
Ar an nDomhnach bhí an Pharáid sa Daingean go diail, ceol, idir óg agus aosta amuigh, daitheanna, culaitheanna, ceoltóirí, éadaí ildathach, ‘saoirse’ ann féin ag baint leis. Bhí an file iltréitheach, Gabriel Rosenstock, fear mór Haiku ar a thriail i gColáiste Íde agus i dTigh Chatháin. Is duine don ngasra filí a eascair in Ollscoil Chorcaí, i ndeire na seascaidi tús na seachtóidí é.Tá sé molta. Níor éirigh lion slí isteach a fháilt i Séipéal Naomh Shéamais mar a raibh leabhar filíochta le dánta nua ó Chorca Dhuibhne, ’Two Tongues’ le seoladh ag an bhfile aitheanta Nuala Ní Dhomhaill, ach bhí sí i Warsaw. Bhí slua lasmuigh agus seo liom suas staighre sa tséipeal ach bhí sé lán anuas dtí leath an staighre. Bhí orm bogadh liom. Dúradh liom gur í an file Ceaití de Bheildiún a sheol’Two Tongues’ agus is maith í Ceaití. Gheobhad an leabhar agus beam ag caint. Tráthnóna Dé Luain i séipéal Naomh Séamus bhí an Soprano, Lily Lundon ag amhrán. Bhí sí go hiontach agus cad é ach bhí cailín beag óg Eva Duffy, ag seint ar an bpiano agus ‘sí a bhí go diail ar fad, dochreite. ‘Sé Aidan O’Carroll a bhí ag tionlacan Lily ar an bpiano agus bhain a iníon siúd Doireann seal as an bpiano leis. Mo leathscéal as na cinn nár éirigh liom a aimsiú- ach ná bac san. Ná raibh lucht siúlóidí agus lucht rothaíochta amuigh ar an nDomhnach, is dócha mar chuid do chomóradh Fhéile Star Wars’ a adhnadh i bParóiste an Fheirtéaraigh ní ró-fhada ó shoin. Bhí gach aon duine sásta dar liom. Ná raibh an-sheachtain’ againn, fiú is ná raibh ann ach cúig lá agus cúig oíche. Nách é an Dr Mícheál Ó Fionnáin a bhain sásamh as an bhFéile óna stáitse sna Flaithis, óir sé a bhunaigh an fhéile sa bhliain 1994. Focail An babhta seo ar eagla go bhfuil sean- ráitisí nó sean- fhocail ag sleamhnú uait seo cúpla ceann a chuirfidh géarú goile ort. 1. Scoiltean breab an chloch. 2. Nuair a thagann an t-am tagann an chlann. 3. Nuair a stadann an síol stadann an fuirse. 4. Nuair is gann é an bia, is fial é a roinnt. 5. Tabharthas Uí Bhriain, do dhá shúíl id dhiaidh. 6. Níl aon bhean is mó droch-bhróga, ná bean an ghréasaí. 7. Is fuirist aithne, buille an tseanduine.

Seniors Alert Scheme
Project4:Layout 1
Question I am a pensioner and live with my daughter who works full-time. I am on my own a lot of the time and I’m worried about my safety. I would like to get a personal alarm but I can’t afford one. Answer - The Seniors Alert Scheme gives support to provide and install monitored personal alarm systems to older people of limited means. The scheme aims to support older people to continue to live securely and independently in their homes. The scheme is available through local community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations registered with Pobal, the nonprofit company that administers the scheme.

day, living with someone who also meets the eligibility criteria, or caring for someone else in your household. You must be able to benefit from the equipment being supplied and willing to maintain contact with the group administering the scheme. The equipment is supplied and installed for free, however you must return it to the registered group if no longer needed.
Contact the local group administering the scheme in your area to apply. Pobal publishes a list of all registered groups in the country on its website pobal.ie. You can also contact Pobal at (01) 511 7000 for details of your local group. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Service
The personal alarm is worn as a pendant around your neck or around your wrist like a watch and connects to a base unit in your home. When the alarm is activated, it automatically rings a helpline, which is open 24 hours a day, all year round. A helpline operator talks to you through the base unit and decides whether to alert a local volunteer responder or, if necessary, the emergency services. The alarm monitoring service is free for the first year. After the first year, you pay an annual monitoring fee. Charges vary by provider and the type of alarm or pendant.

Beatha agus Bás Thomás Ruiséal The Life and Death of Thomas Russell le Noel Ó Murchú foilsithe ag An Sagart Tá scéal Thomáis Ruiséal, laoch Duibhneach i gCogadh na Saoirse, anso i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla. ‘Ar an 24ú lá de Mhárta 1918 in eachtra a tharla i gCarraig an Chabhaltaigh i gContae an Chláir, sádh Tomás Ruiséal, múinteoir óg agus Óglach, ó Choimín Chill Chúile in aice le Baile na nGall. Fuair sé bás trí lá ina dhiaidh san. Deirtear gurb é a shochraid an tsochraid ba mhó a chonacthas i gCiarraí Thiar riamh. Seo é a scéal. On the 24th of March 1918 in an incident that occurred in Carrigaholt in County Clare, Tomás Ruiséal, a teacher and a Volunteer from Kilcooley Commons near Ballydavid, was bayonetted. He died three days later. It is said that his funeral was the biggest ever held in West Kerry. This is his story.’ An tEagarthóir An Café Liteartha
