Extending The Life Of An Díseart's Stained Glass Windows Ted Creedon
West Kerry
Summer
Sports Camp
When Michael Elsemann from Rheingau in Germany was on holidays in Dingle two years ago he visited An Díseart to see the iconic stained glass windows in the chapel. A specialist in stained glass restoration and repair, Michael noticed that some windows on the chapel's south wall, were insecure and in danger of being blown in during stormy weather.
Scoil Iognáid Rís (The Mall, Dingle)
He carried out some temporary repair work at the time but promised to return to complete the more extensive restoration work required.
Monday 9th - Friday 13th July
Michael has a special interest in the chapel windows which were originally designed and assembled by the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt studio in Munich before being installed in what was the Presentation nuns convent chapel 120 years ago.
Boys & Girls aged 5 - 13 years
Michael learned his trade at the same Munich studio before establishing his own company (www.glasmalerei-elsemann.de) thirty years ago. Over the past two weeks he has completely replaced the lead surrounding each piece of glass on various panels from five stained glass windows. He will complete the work this weekend and return to Germany on Monday. "We're fortunate to have someone of Michael's experience doing this vital restoration work which is extremely delicate and intensive", Father Sheehy told West Kerry Live.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm
The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 29th May will be the American comedy drama Tully. The film delves into the modern parenthood experience with an admirably deft blend of humor and raw honesty, brought to life by an outstanding performance by Charlize Theron who plays a mother of three including a newborn. She is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully.
The following week on Tuesday 5th June the feature will be the Australian film Sweet Country. Set in 1929 in the outback of the Northern Territory the film follows Sam, a middle-aged Aboriginal man who works for a preacher. When Harry, a bitter war veteran, moves into a neighbouring outpost, the preacher sends Sam and his family to help Harry renovate his cattle yards. Tensions rise and Sam is forced to flee after a violent incident. Eventually the community begins to question whether justice is really being served. Sweet Country makes brilliant use of the Australian outback as the setting for a hard-hitting story that satisfies as a character study as well as a sociopolitical statement.

There is something to learn from the change of attitude towards surfing in West Kerry. When I was a child in Stradbally, surfers were seen as something mysterious. They appeared out of nowhere in rusted camper-vans with nonsense number-plates. They drifted through the aisles of the local Spar like exotic ghosts, with their long manes of unwashed blonde hair, their sandals slapping between their heels and the floor. The girls were like another species altogether, they were tanned, they wore flip-flops, but to our delight, they didn’t wear bras. We didn’t know if we should be attracted to them or disgusted by them, we settled on being attracted to them and disgusted with ourselves. The men resembled the women in all of the aforementioned points, but were unmistakably masculine. This was Home and Away on our doorstep, who needed Summer Flamin’ Bay? They didn’t tend to contribute much to the local economy, seeming to live for weeks off of a single sliced pan, but they added something else to the place, a perception that our home was not only a draw to Yanks trying to find their roots and Irish families staycationing in caravan parks. Our home might be ‘cool’. These ‘Surfies’ as we called them were on to something, they knew something about our home that we didn’t. They were a fairly self-contained community, yet perfectly affable, nodding with a smile as we passed them on the cut to the beach as they struggled to get into their wetsuits in the biting cold. Then to observe them in action became a glorious spectacle. Something about the swerve and crash of a single person balancing on a breaking wave was mesmerizing. The stability and skill that they possessed produced something that seemed more like an optical illusion than a real feat of physical prowess. There was indeed something special about this beach that had been invisible to us; under the water lay banks that caused waves to break multiple times, giving surfers more opportunities to catch waves each time they went out, which is apparently rare. Of course, it wasn’t long before locals got involved and now it is a popular pursuit among natives, and astute business people are tapping into the sport’s potential tourist draw. Some foreign surfers have settled here and children’s wetsuits can be seen hanging from clothes lines next to the adult versions. So the question of ‘what do they see in our home?’ has changed to ‘how did we not see it earlier?’ We have resources and opportunities in our own backyards that we often overlook, choosing instead to be moths to the flame of distant attraction. It has taken a while for surfing to be really embraced on our beaches, now it is as ubiquitous as the waves themselves. Stigmas have lifted, the locals have become surfers and the surfers have become locals. This model of subtle integration seems like a beautiful model to follow in other aspects of society.

Farming News Farmers Advised To Ensure That Ineligible Land Not Included In BPS The Department Agriculture, Food and the Marine has advised farmers to check their applications for Basic Payment and ensure that they have not included any ineligible land. Examples of ineligible features include buildings, roads, yards, scrub, rock and land burnt since 1st March. Farmers should also check that all parcel boundaries are aligned with the physical parcel boundary. Farmers can make amendments to their applications without penalty until 31st May (9th June with penalty), and they should remove any land that is ineligible. Officials in the Department are obliged by EU Regulations to analyse applications in order to identify ineligible features, including land which was burnt during the specified closed season of 1st March to 31st August, and satellite imagery is being examined as part of this process. Agricultural and eligible forestry land identified as ineligible will be deemed ineligible for payment under the 2018 Basic Payment and other area-based schemes. Farmers are reminded that if they burn land after the 1st March: •
They risk prosecution;
• Such land will not be eligible for payment under the Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes; • Inclusion of illegally burnt land in the 2018 Basic Payment Scheme application may result in reduced payment and penalties under this scheme and the other area-based schemes, e.g. Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme; • Illegal burning can also render the land of neighbours ineligible for payment where the fire encroaches onto such land; • Where it is identified that lands were burnt during the closed season this may result in such land being inspected by Department officials. GLAS 2017 Balancing Payments Commence This week sees the commencement of the 2017 balancing payment to GLAS participants. The balancing payment represents the final 15% of the 2017 scheme-year payment and completes the total payment for GLAS actions undertaken last year. This week’s payment run is worth over €17.5m in to 28,000 farmers in the GLAS scheme with a further significant payrun planned for next week. While the Department expects to pay 28,000 farmers the balancing payment this week, a significant number (c. 17,000) of GLAS participants need to complete the requirements under the scheme before they can be paid. The most significant outstanding issue for these applicants is the submission of a Farm Nutrient Management Plan (NMP) for GLAS 3 participants. There are also cases where a Commonage Management Plan (CMP) on the online CMP system needs to be finalised and a smaller number of cases where GLAS 1 and 2 participants have not yet completed their GLAS Training. Participants with outstanding actions have been contacted directly to advise them of how they can proceed. World Bee Day Last December, the United Nations declared the 20 May as World Bee Day, adopting a resolution proposed by Slovenia and supported by all EU Member States. The aim of World Bee Day is to raise awareness of the importance of bees and other pollinators, through education and activities to highlight the threats they face as well as their contribution to sustainable development following a decline in population numbers over recent years. Pollinators are critically important for the environment and the economy. The 2015-2020 All-Ireland Pollinator Plan outlined that the value of pollinators for human food crops grown in the Republic of Ireland has been estimated as at least €53m per annum. This estimate excludes the added value achieved through pollination of wild plant species and the benefits this brings to the wider economy. The honeybee is the most important managed pollinator species. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine supports Irish beekeeping through a number of initiatives including the National Apiculture Programme, provision of a free disease diagnostic service for Irish beekeepers, providing aid to support the activities of national beekeeping organisations and provision of grant aid for capital investments by individual beekeepers in specialised beekeeping related equipment and structures. 12 West Kerry Live
The GLAS Scheme is also playing a key role in protecting and enhancing biodiversity across the Irish countryside with over 50,000 farmer participants. Installation of bee boxes and bee sand are two specific measures within GLAS aimed at supporting solitary bees through the replacement of lost habitats. In addition under the Scheme there are several other actions which support measures that have potential to impact positively on pollinators, e.g. maintaining cover of Low Input Permanent Pasture and Traditional Hay Meadows. These two measures aim to preserve native flowers which are important food sources for pollinators. Good Weather Expected, So Prepare To Start Cutting Silage, Where Possible The silage season is set to get into full swing later this week with Met Eireann forcasting a sustained period dry weather. Recent weeks has brought relief to farmers after one of the worst springs in many years with strong grass growth across the country. IFA President's €120K Salary The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has refused to clarify if its President's salary of €120,000 includes directors fees - or whether Joe Healy is in receipt of another €62,000. This lack of clarity comes two years after Mr Healy swept to power after a pay scandal at the organisation. Now, there are major questions over Mr Healy's own remuneration. He is legally entitled to receive directors fees - which this year will add up to approximately €62,000 for the two board positions he holds. In 2015, the organisation saw its General Secretary and President resign at the height of a pay scandal, and it is now refusing to detail whether director's fees its President Healy has received have made up part of his €120,000 annual salary or are surplus to it. The IFA refused to give a breakdown of it's President's full remuneration package or clarify whether its President Joe Healy has transfered the director's fees he has received to date onto IFA. The IFA would only confirm that Healy is directly paid director's fees for the two boards he sits on. However, it refused to detail how long the arrangements have been in place and whether directors fees he has received since he became President in April 2016 have since been paid into IFA funds, or whether his IFA salary has been reduced to reflect the additional payments he has received. IFA accounts for 2016/2017 show that Healy was paid a salary of €111,846 from IFA for his first year as the Association's President, after he took up the post in late April 2016, just shy of a full year's salary. He also received €25,000 from FBD in 2017, for his role as a non executive director - as he only joined the board in August 2017 - a board that pays its non executive directors €50,000. He also received €7,625 in 2016 from Bord Bia in 2016 and will be paid approximately €11,970 for 2017 and 2018 for this role and will receive €50,000 for the full year of 2018 in FBD fees. The payment of the director's fees is despite the fact that the former IFA Chief Economist Con Lucey recommended that the President's remuneration would not include director's fees. On top of his €120,000 salary it was announced when he became President that he also has the use of an Audi A6 and vouched expenses. It was also revealed that its former General Secretary, Pat Smith, was paid €542,634 in 2013, including a basic salary of €295,000, a €145,194 pension contribution and a €55,000 bonus as well as €35,000 from IFA telecom. In 2014, Smith received €452,484. Smith resigned from his role in November 2015, amid calls for greater transparency of pay levels in the organisation. Mr Smith received €1.55m for his severance claim and €350,000 in relation to his defamation claim after the case was settled on the steps of the High Court earlier this year. By comparison, The ICMSA Presidential expenses arrangement is effectively unchanged since in the transition from the last president to this. ICMSA President Pat McCormack receives an annual allowance of €50,000 and also receives the €10,937 director fees from Bord Bia. He is also in receipt of an undisclosed amount for his role as Non Executive Director of Ornua. A lot is expected of Mr Healy after the debacle that was the last regime, and everyone, especially the organisations members are hoping that it wont be more of the same. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Annascaul - Still Celebrating Singing! This month marks the third birthday of the Annascaul Singing Club and it will be celebrated in the usual fashion this coming Thursday evening (24th) at Patcheen's Pub starting at 9pm. So, do call in and help us mark the occasion The first anniversary of the club founded in 2015 by local singers and musicians as a monthly free, open house event, led to the first of the 'Annascaul Celebrating Singing' gatherings the following year. Well received by the local community and also the singers, musicians and visitors who took part, it set a musical ball rolling locally. Last year's second gathering saw an increase in visitors and participants with the official opening being carried out by Philip King of 'South Winds Blow' and 'Other Voices' fame. A gala night at Joan's Café Nua with the premiére of a new musical drama,'Sideways On Planet Piano' rounded off a great weekend that also featured sessions and pub gigs around the village. This year's event promises to be more of the same. Due to circumstances beyond our control the event will be happening later in the summer rather than in early June as in previous years. Kerry County Council's Arts Office has once again agreed funding and the council's Community Department has also offered assistance. We are investigating further fundrasing ideas in order to continue to provide what has been an exciting addition to the musical repertoire of West Kerry. So, watch this space and our FB page for updates and further news of 'Annascaul Celebrating Singing' 2018.'

Roasted Lemon Curd Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
Opening Hours Mon -Sat: 10am - 6pm
If you love lemon curd you will love the addition of roasting the lemons to give it a unique sweet citrus flavour. When making this, don’t be afraid to really blacken the lemons. The curd will be slightly darker than normal but will have such a beautiful intense aroma. This curd is so versatile and can be added to any dessert to give it a lift. The roasted lemons without making the curd will work for salads and fish too. Ingredients 3 lemons, zested then halved 200g butter 200g caster sugar 4 egg yolks Method To roast the lemons Place a pan on over a medium to high heat. Zest two of the lemons and keep the zest for later use in the recipe. Place the cut lemons on the pan flesh side down. Cook this for about 15 minutes. If you want them roasted more put them in a pre-heated oven at 180ºC. Once they have roasted to your liking, squeeze all the juice out of them. For the curd Put the butter, sugar, lemon zest and juice in a pot. Cook it over a very low heat. Whisk the mixture until smooth. Add the egg yolks and whisk vigorously for about 10 minutes until the mixture begins to thicken. Allow this to cool before using.

It Wouldn’t Hurt To Look To Your Diet For Pain Relief! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Pain is not normal, it signals an injury or illness, it is the body’s way to alert us to change a situation or to attend to a specific site in the body. Interestingly, all pain is produced by the brain through incoming data from “danger detectors” which are distributed across all tissues and act as the eyes and ears for the brain, alerting the brain of dangers. The brain evaluates these danger messages and together with previous exposure, expectations, cultural and social beliefs and other sensory data arrives at a painful conclusion and sends healing substances to the injured site to resolve the situation and restore health to the affected site. We feel this response as pain. Inflammation is the body’s way to deal with injury and illness of which pain along with stiffness, heat, swelling and immobility are tools of the healing process. Chronic pain is defined as any pain lasting longer than three months. It affects 35% of the Irish adult population, increasing with age and manual employment. Lower back pain is the most common source of chronic pain, followed by joint pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain. Pain relief medications manipulate the mechanism which results in pain, which is fine and dandy while a pain site heals and returns to a healthy status. However, as our bodies were never designed for chronic, unresolved pain and inflammation, finding a drug-based solution is proving very tricky and not without damaging side effects. Unlike conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and renal disease, there is not yet a standard dietary protocol for chronic pain. However, appropriate nutritional intervention could be the most useful tool available to sufferers to improve health outcomes and specifically reduce inflammation. Afterall, everything you eat changes your body’s chemistry and can either fight for you or fight against you. With this in mind and what we already know about the effects of chronic pain, overlooking a nutritional approach is negligent, to say the least. Malnutrition is not uncommon for chronic pain sufferers as the adrenal glands go into overdrive secreting cortisol and catecholamine (hormones) to respond to the injury. Elevated cholesterol, lipids and glucose levels are almost universal in patients of uncontrolled pain due to the excess of cortisol. Again, the long-term secretion of these hormones is not normal and leads to unstable glucose levels, loss of appetite, muscle wasting, weakness and poor mental activity. 18 West Kerry Live
Higher intakes of sugar and starches and low protein intakes are a common dietary pattern among those in chronic pain and among those on opioid-based drug therapy. The combination of these effects damages the body further, increasing the likelihood of additional injury, inflammation and more intense pain. It is reported that many pain sufferers experience a pain flare after eating high sugar/high starch foods. A high protein diet with the restriction of sugar and starches will help reduce pain flares and also help stabilize glucose levels, leading to better weight control. Pain sites such as hips, knees, spine and feet are aggravated by excess weight. Although headaches, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain do not seem to be affected by weight – all pain conditions benefit from a high protein/low sugar and starch diet. The breakdown of protein to amino acids provide the building blocks of pain relieving substances such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Amino acid proline, builds cartilage and collagen, adding strength and cushioning to structural tissue in the body.
nesses and therefore, central to recovery, the pain and suffering is set to continue. Chemicals in processed foods such as aspartame, sucralose and MSG are known excitotoxins which can heighten sensitivity to pain. These chemicals are best avoided by adapting to a more natural wholefood diet, mainly plant-based. This will also benefit the microbiome (friendly bacteria) in the gut from which most of the immune system is contained and 80% of serotonin is produced. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pesticides and processed foods have a negative effect on our gut and exacerbate symptoms. Magnesium helps muscle, blood vessels and nerve tissue to relax – easing pain and inflammation. Deficiency is prevalent among diabetic patients and is a contributory factor to chronic pain, decreased healing and neuropathy among this group. Adequate magnesium levels may also improve inflammation, fibromyalgia and myofascial pain. Leabhar Nua Kristiina Ehin is one of the foremost authors writing in the Estonian language today. She is widely known in Estonia itself and has been chosen as ‘Poet Laureate of Tartu City’ for 2018. She has travelled extensively outside Estonia, frequently presenting her poetry in English translation as she has done in Ireland. She is both a poet and short story writer and in this collection Péarlaí Corraigh (or Bog Pearls) Aogán Ó Muircheartaigh presents a large selection of Kristiina’s works in Irish. Seo cnuasach d’athleaganacha ar shaothar filíochta agus gearrscéalaíochta Kristiina Ehin ó láimh Aogáin Uí Mhuircheartaigh. Tá réim leathan ábhair agus stíle ann, agus an-éagsúlacht sna hábhair: tuairisc ghlé ar a grá máthartha dá naíonán beag i ndán amháin, cuir i gcás; macallaí béaloidis; an saol a bhí agus mar a tharlaíodh; an saol atá agus an saol a bheidh, seans; uafás agus briseadh croí na cogaíochta; laige an duine agus neart is forbairt an ghrá; agus i ndeireadh thiar caoineadh a chum Kristiina ar bhás a hathar, Andres Ehin, sárfhile clúiteach é féin, a d’éag go tubaisteach sa bhliain 2011. Interested participants can contact Seán by email at info@pianoexpress. ie or call him on 087 2479577. The Killorglin group will meet in Killorglin Community College. ‘These projects are offered for free and young people across Kerry are encouraged to participate,’ stated Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. John Sheahan. ‘We are delighted to see Creative Ireland Kerry programmes expanding and reaching into communities’. ‘The project is informed by research undertaken by Kerry Music Education Partnership, reaffirmed by direct feedback at our Creative Ireland public consultations’ stated Kate Kennelly, Creative Ireland Co-ordinator and Arts Officer at Kerry County Council, ‘Being in a position to extend the programme and work even more closely with communities is central to the Creative Ireland vision and Kerry County Council’s role in delivering the programme at local level.’

In order to meet the divergent educational needs of the growing number of children attending Scoil Naomh Eirc (currently with two mainstream teachers) the Board of Management, along with the parents of the school children decided that the only option for the school was to employ an additional teacher in a private capacity. The school community joined forces to begin a fundraising campaign to enable the school to employ this much-needed teacher.
Further Information: Susan 0872063504 or Áine 0876791730
Since then a number of fundraising initiatives have yielded monies to assist with the employment of this extra teacher. As part of the ongoing fundraising efforts a Bumper Raffle is planned in the coming weeks. The school is very grateful for the beautiful piece of art which has been supplied by local artist and former pupil of the school, Liam O’ Neill. Other prizes in the raffle include photographs from John Hooton and Clare Langan, Sinéad Lough Pottery, vouchers from Dingle Skellig

What’s Happening In The Hub? Representatives from the local farming community and Teagasc met with the Dingle Hub team recently to discuss potential applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) communications network proposed for the Dingle Peninsula. One very interesting application is to link sensors that provide data on soil to a physically expanded version of the existing Dingle Hub water monitoring network which will enable the soil-data to be viewed by farmers and stored remotely alongside the water data. This should enable greater understanding of the environmental impacts of current regulation and farming practice and provide options to improve the efficiency of farming, while also reducing or eliminating the negative environmental impacts. Sign Up Now For Street Feast The Community Department of Kerry County Council and the Kerry Public Participation Network (PPN) are delighted to support Street Feast again this year – the nationwide day of street parties, community celebrations and neighbourhood lunches, which is taking place across the country on Sunday 10th June 2018. It’s a simple idea: Street Feasts can be held anywhere – on the pavement, in a laneway or a local park, but it's really just a great excuse to eat great food, celebrate your local community and meet new people who live near you. They can be any size, from two to 2,000 people. Everyone is invited to bring something to contribute, be it a tasty dish, some chairs or a musical instrument.
45 Opel / Vauxhall cars took part in the recent 'West Kerry Wild Atlantic Opel/Vauxhall Car Run'. Starting at O’Riada’s bar in Ballymacelligott the convoy travelled around West Kerry, over Bothar na gClogh at Cathair Con Rí and stopping at Inch beach and Minard Castle. Páidí Ó’Sé's provided light refreshments. €438 was raised for Down Syndrome Kerry.
Established in 2010, Street Feast has grown steadily year on year with over 1,300 events held nationwide in 2017 and over 120,000 people taking part. The initiative aims to build and strengthen communities through sharing of food and conversation, culture and knowledge. Facilitating social inclusion, multiculturalism and diversity in an age-friendly, all-inclusive environment, Street Feast creates more resilient, safer and healthier communities. Those interested in celebrating Street Feast should register online at www. streetfeast.ie. They will be provided with free DIY packs with decorations, invites, posters and flyers and other supports. You can also contact the Community Department of Kerry County Council on 066 7183672.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Notes 2 Teacher Primary Schools Mid Kerry 7-a-side: Good luck to Kiltallagh NS in their Shield final versus Douglas NS on this coming Sunday, May 27th in Beaufort. Congratulations to the boys and girls from our club who are part of the team. Under 12's: Phase 2 sees our Under 12's at home to Ballymac on May 27th with a 6 pm throw in. These boys are playing amazing football. Head along to watch them and show your support. Under 14's: It was one of those evenings where you couldn’t choose a stand out player from a match, as every member of the panel put in a gigantic effort that made for a great game on a fine sunny evening in Milltown. Na Gael led at half time after some impressive scores in the first half but our home side stuck some fine scores of their own to stay with their opponents and this continued into the second period. Both teams exchanged scores early in the second half as Na Gael moved forward Milltown/Castlemaine would come right back at them. In an exciting and pulsating half of football Milltown then raised the green flag to come within a point of their opponents. The game was balanced on a knife edge with only a few minutes left. Na Gael would push on however and see the game out to progress to the Division 3 Final. Final score: Milltown/Castlemaine 2-12 V 3-18 Na Gael. Well done to both sets of teams, coaches and officials on a great game. It wasn’t to be on the night but the Milltown/Castlemaine U14 panel put in a performance they should be proud of. Congratulations to Na Gael and the very best of luck to them in the final. A big thank you to our Coiste Na nÓg sponsors Foley’s Spar and Burke’s Butchers.(Report courtesy of Danny McClure) Seniors: Our seniors (sponsored by Londis Top Shop and Larkins Bar and Restaurant) are away to Castleisland Desmonds this Sunday with a 2.30 throw in. Your support would be very much appreciated. Veterinary Medicine: Congratulations to local girl, Áine Murphy, who qualified as a vet in UCD last week. Well done Áine. We hope you will have many rewarding and fulfilling experiences in the years ahead. Get Well Wishes: We remember all those in our community who are sick at this time. We hope you will return to good health very soon.

One particular age group that currently needs more coaches is the U6 boys. We have many fantastic coaches, whom we wish to thank for their time and commitment to training. However due to work commitments, family commitments and various other reasons, some coaches cannot make it every week. If you can help out in our already very structured and organised coaching sessions, be it either on a regular basis or part time basis, please make contact with our coaching officer Ian Twiss on 087 252 1053. You will most certainly get great pride and enjoyment in seeing our little footballers progress.

Maurice Kavanagh Cabs 4 Seater 087-6553399 8 Seater 087-3932333 info@dinglebaycabs.com Movie Review - Deadpool 2
Pierce Hoare Deadpool 2 , directed by David Leitch, is a Comedy/Superhero movie filled to the brim with dark and inappropriate humour. The film follows the anti-hero mercenary Deadpool, who is played by Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, XMen Origins: Wolverine) and also stars Josh Brolin (Avengers 3), TJ Miller (Big Hero 6, Cloverfield) and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta).

I will say the movie is a 16s for a good reason as it is definitely not suitable for younger audiences due to the type of humour and graphic scenes of violence. The action in the movie is great to watch, with most of the fights having popular songs playing during them (for example, Dolly Parton’s 'Nine to Five'). The CGI in the movie is pretty bad sometimes, but still looks better than Justice League and Black Panther, which had far bigger budgets than Deadpool 2. All the characters in the movie are fun to watch and add their own bit of comedy, with Josh Brolin’s Cable being the straight man to Deadpool throughout the movie. Deadpool’s fourth wall breaking humour works well, which they have almost perfected after the first movie, and they never fail to poke fun at other superhero movies, including the first Deadpool. There are also three celebrity cameos in this movie, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Alan Tudyk, who even after watching the movie I did not believe were in it until seeing pictures of who they played. One of my favourite songs in the soundtrack of the film is near the end and if you see the movie (I will remind that the film is not for the faint of heart), listen carefully to the lyrics. I thought Deadpool 2 managed to improve upon the first Deadpool, which is already great, and I would recommend this film only to those who have seen a few Marvel superhero movies, the first Deadpool, and to those who know what to expect from the movie because, as previously stated, it is a 16s movie (and a hard R-rated over in America).

Castlegregory Notes Regatta: This year’s Maharees regatta will be held on June 24th. Further details to follow. Notification to all farmers in Castlegregory and Cloghane: A meeting will take place in Halla na Cheile in Cloghane on Monday 28th May with the view to creating a locally led scheme on the Dingle Peninsula. Notice: Upcoming elections for the Community council will be taking place in June with new members, starting end of August. Stradbally, Maharees, Aughacasla and the Village are eligible to have 5 members per area to sit on the Council. Some active board members have served the maximum elected term allowed so it is critical that new representation step forward. This is an excellent opportunity for your voice to be heard and positively impact the future of our community. Soccer notes: Reserve cup result: Ballyhar 3-0 Castlegregory Celtic. After a month with no game, Sunday saw Castle travel to Ballyhar for a tough encounter which saw Castle left ruing missed chances while the home side capitalised on their chances to advance in the reserve cup. The positives were that several younger lads got good game time under the belt and despite the final score Castle created plenty of chances but just couldn't hit the net. Best of luck to Ballyhar in the next round. The Brandon Bay HM/10k 2018: The clock is definitely ticking with this year's event only 7 short weeks away from this coming Saturday! To date entries are well ahead of the past few years and there are people registered from right around the globe including the USA, England, Poland, France & Spain!! Once again, if you are interested in participating you can register online at any time on our website www.brandonbayhalfmarathon.com where you can also select your t-shirt size as well as having the option of getting your race pack posted directly to you this year, saving you the trouble of collecting on the Friday evening. Entry for the event is €30 / €40 for the 10k / HM respectively and all participants receive a bespoke event medal, event tech t-shirt, race number & timing chip. This year's event will see funds raised not only go towards the development of the local soccer club but also towards several local bodies such as the Maharees Conservation Association, The Mike Deane / Jamie Wrenn Charity walk, Meánscoil Nua an Leith Triúigh and Castlegregory Primary school.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome Eddie O’Grady
exchange. This exacerbates any painful situation because toxic metabolic waste products build up which often further aggravate pain receptors. This can create a vicious cycle, leading to increased muscle tension and further thickening and hardening of the fascia, which in turn further limits mobility.
Myofascial pain syndrome is where pressure on sensitive points within your muscles (trigger points) causes pain and sometimes refers pain to seemingly unrelated parts of your body. It can occur after a muscle has been contracted repetitively ie. repetitive motions used in jobs or hobbies or by stress-related muscle tension. While nearly everyone has experienced muscle tension pain at some point, the discomfort associated with myofascial pain syndrome persists or worsens. There is no laboratory, radiographic or other diagnostic tests to prove the diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome so it is considered a “subjective” diagnosis. Myofascial trigger points do not always cause pain. Sometimes they can lie dormant or inactive within a muscle for months or even years. Trigger points can often be identified by a skilled therapist working through your muscles with deep tissue massage. They feel like little knots deep within the muscles which when pressed are extremely tender.
Symptoms
Fascia is the body's connective tissue. It is a head to toe, all-encompassing and interwoven system of fibrous connective tissue found throughout the body. Your fascia provides a framework that helps support and protect individual muscle groups, organs, and the entire body as a unit. It is the same as that cling film, elastic type structure that surrounds a joint of meat, helping hold it together when the outer skin is removed.
Treatment
This fascia in itself can also contribute to ''myofascial pain'' syndrome. Injury, illness, stress, aging and repetitive use, can cause the fascia to shorten, thicken and become more unyielding . All the nerves and blood vessels run through the fascia. Therefore, if this connective tissue is tight, the associated tissues will have poor nutrient
Signs and symptoms of myofascial pain syndrome may include: Deep, aching pain in a muscle Pain that persists or worsens A tender knot in a muscle Difficulty sleeping due to pain
also help, along with improving ones sleep patterns. In severe, chronic cases, medications may be needed to aid recovery. Often trials of different medications are used to find the best treatment for a particular patient. For example, trazodone or amitriptyline may be used at bedtime to improve sleep as well as relieve pain; cyclobenzaprine or orphenadrine can also be used to relax muscles and aid sleep; and antidepressants such as sertraline, fluoxetine(prozac), duloxetine, can be used to control pain, as can lyrica and gabapentin. Medications have side effects, so are added as a last resort in chronic cases showing little improvement with physio alone. They should only be taken under a doctors supervision.
Spasm in the area The most commonly affected muscle groups include those of the neck, shoulders, upper & lower back. Generally one side of the body is more affected than the other. It is common for patients with myofascial pain syndrome to have poor sleep patterns. This is associated with feeling unrested after a nights ''sleep'' and daytime tiredness . Stiffness after inactivity is also a common feature.
Eddie O’Grady
Myofascial pain can often benefit greatly from ''proper skilled deep tissue massage'', and trigger point release, both manual and with dry needling techniques. The fascia can also be stretched and worked out during the massage. This is also one of the benefits of a stretching program when incorporated into your exercise routine. It helps keep prevent the fascia from tightening up because you are continually stretching it out. During treatment for myofascial pain it is im- Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street portant that the patients reduce their stress & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) levels, if this is a contributing factor to the condition. Tips on how to Reduce Waste le Transition Corca Dhuibhne The Dingle Market is in full swing with lots of farm produce, ready-to eat-food, crafts, gift ideas and other products on offer from stall holders. Buying directly from local producers can mean a reduction in packaging and transport waste. Its lovely to meet the producer, be it a craft person, a grower a baker or a cook. They know their product and is passionate and proud about what they are selling. The community stall will also be in operation, so you can sell excess vegetables from your garden. Its a brilliant way to share the fruits of your labour. So pop into to the market every Friday to shop local, to have a chat and to find out who's growing the best veg - it might be your neighbour! Don't forget to bring your own bags or containers to help minimise waste. Tacaigh le na díoltóirí agus mothaigh id' shuimhneas i measc cairde.

A BIT OF HISTORY A lifetime wish was fulfilled for Hugh O Donnell, Ontario, Canada last week when he stood on the threshold of the O 'Donnell homestead on Thursday last in Gleann na nGealt of which he was acquainted with only through stories and tales of his childhood. Hugh's great grandfather John O'Donnell emigrated in the 1700's to Ontario in Canada with his wife Johanna Daly, a native of Tonevane . At that time they had one child an 8 year old boy named Thomas who was later to become very famous in their newfound home in Canada. Thomas grew up and became the Archbishop of Halifax in Ontario. He returned once, a young priest to Gleann na nGealt to visit his cousin Ellie O Donnell Murphy and family in Gleann na nGealt. In Canada two more siblings were born, a boy named Michael and a girl called Bridget. Hugh is a direct descendant. He has many relatives through the O Donnell line in Annascaul and Camp and he plans to return again sometime soon to meet more of his cousins ! It was a pleasure to meet him and his companion Eibhlin !

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Sea,` tá biaiste na caide tosnaithe i gceart. Ní fada go mbeidh laochra Chiarraí i gclibirt le Contae an Chláir. Is dócha ná beidh aon eagla mór ar na Ciarraígh mar is docha go bhfuil beartais réitithe don saesúr ag ceannasaíocht na caide seo againne. Níl an Clár ró olc nó ba chirte ta siad agus Tiobrad Árann feabhaithe go mór le cúpla bliain. Caithear cuimhneamh ar bhlianta ó shin nuair a bhí Ciarraí ar cos-anáirde agus gur bhuaidh An Clár ortha. Ainneoin an fheabhas atá ar an gClár ní dóigh liom go mbeidh aon tseans acu i aghaidh Chiarraí. Nílímid ach ag tosnú go fóill ach beidh traochadh ag baint leis an raiste cluichí a bheidh le himirt ag an ndíorma Ochtair.Ardú croí do Fhearmanach a mbua ar Ard Mhacha agus bhuail Muineacháin blaist ar Thír Eoghain. An cheist atá ag déanamh tinnis do chách ná cé a cháileóigh don gcomórtas ochtair. Beam ann, ach cé eile? Cinnte An Ghaillimh, Bleá Cliath, Tír Chonaill, Muineacháin, Corcaigh. Sin fóirne go mbeinn cinnte fútha ach is mó barra-thuisle a bheidh san idirlinn. Bheadh duine ag súil le Maigh Eó, agus Cill Dara. Ní fada ná go mbeidh an liosta ullamh chun bóthair. Bhí an- chluiche idir Luimneach agus Tiobrad Árann ar an nDomhnach seo tharainn agus ambaist mar na gCat, tá iománaithe Corcaí ag teacht chúcha féin. Tá féasta breá caide agus iománaíochta rómhainn. Ba dheas dá mbeadh foireann mar bhí, caide na mBan againn arís. Is dócha go bhfuil siad ann ach teacht ortha.Tá foireann camógaíochta ar an mbóthar agus ní holc iad. Coinníoll agus cur i gcrích as seo amach. Bás Fuair Micheál Feirtéar a bhí ag cur fé in Ard na Caithne le blianta, bás gan phéin an tseachtain seo caite. Bhíos ag súil go mbainfeadh sé amach an céad. Bhí sé ag tarrac ar an naocha hocht. Fear deas go raibh cur amach ar an saol mór aige agus blaise don ngreann ina eachtraithe. Déarfainn gur bhain sé an- shásamh as a shaol. Ní raibh aon teora lena chuimhne agus ní chuala an drochfhocal aige do éinne. Is mó tamall a thug sé agus Peigí ag bailiú dramhaíol ón dtráig.
Fear cleachtan. Bhunaigh sé féin agus Micheál Davitt, Gabriel Rosenstock agus banraíon na ndámh Nuala ní Dhómhnaill an iris ‘Innti.’ Las Liam agus a chairde ‘Tine Chnámh’ atá ag spéacharnaigh in iothlainn na filíochta inniu agus beidh céad bliain ó inniu. Taobh eile fós. Thainigh sé agus gasra scoláire Ó Ollscoil Chorcaí le cabhrú le saothar ‘Threabhadh Doimhin an Chomharchumainn’. Is ag bailiú chloch a bhíodar, rud a theastaigh go géar. Deirimse cleachta leat. Bhí sé go láidir sa tsiúlóid ó Dhún Chaoin go Bleá Cliath ag éileamh oscailt scoil Dhún Chaoin agus Údarás daonlathach Gaeltachta. D’éirigh linn an dá cheann a bhain amach ach bhain rialtas an lae inniu an vóta do mhuintir na Gaeltachta, ‘Spriosáin nó síofraí a chodail amuigh,’ arsa Liam.
Ach stúmpa mór caillí is í pósta le buachaillín óg gan chiall.

Chaith sé seachtain agam fadó, é féin a deartháir Séamus agus Davitt lé an féar a shábhailt. Braithimíd uainn tú a Liaim ach d’fhágais saibhreas ard scoláireachta againn ná millfear choíche,..... Tá ard fhear ar lár. Suaimhneas na bhFlaitheas aige. Véarsaí Is dócha gur mó leagan a bhíonn ar amhrán ach tá an leagan ceart ann chomh maith. Tá daoine ag cur ceiste, cioca ceann d’mhráin,fé Cheataí’ an céann is cirte. Tá sé i Leabhar a haon na n-amhrán agus ‘sé an chéad ceann an ceann ceart. Níl an t-amhrán i gceart gan an chéad dhá bhéarsa a bheith ann. Cuir faobhhar ar do chuimhne agus beidh sé ag rith chughat. Is minic a deireadh ‘Micks’ mac Gearaillt ‘na déarfaidís an t-amhrán i gceart! Bliain a dtaca ‘sea phósas agus is mómharach mar ghaibhinn an tslí,
Dá bhean chéile Peigí,dá gclann a ghaolta agus a cháirde ár gcobhrón ó chraoí.

Lawn & Grass Cutting Service News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Jimmy Bruen Weekend The combination of high quality golf, a pristine course and excellent weather made for a very successful weekend when the club hosted the Jimmy Bruen during the weekend of 12th and 13th May. Our representatives had a good win in the first round but came up against a strong Tralee team in Round 2 but gave a good account of themselves. The feedback from the visiting teams on all aspects of the weekend, the course, the catering and the organisation was consistently very positive and a tribute to those who worked so hard in preparation. Get into Golf The programmes to encourage people to try Golf are getting under way now; the Ladies programme began with a ‘Taster’ evening on Monday 14th May with a good attendance and will continue each Monday with introductory lessons from PGA Professional Cormac Flannery. There are still places left and it is never too late to join the fun – contact Muiríde at 087 7708686 for details.

of the year and they did well. This competition, in addition to the Mid Kerry junior league that starts this week (every Tuesday), will bring them on.

There was no winner of the €7,000 Jackpot. Four prizes of €40 each went to Mary Quirke, Langford Street, Killorglin. Ticket sold by Jacks.
Players such as Aidan O’Sullivan, Danny O’Shea, Danny Healy, and Cian O’Keeffe got good game time against Dr Crokes. We were competitive in the first quarter in Killarney last Friday when we trailed by 0-3 to 0-2. Then things unravelled as we conceded three goals before the break and another seconds into the second half, that left us some way adrift but we managed to outscored the home side by 1-6 to 0-2 in the last quarter.
Catherina O’Leary. Glenbeigh. Ticket sold by Patie Joy.
Next game is on Friday, June 1 away to St Michael's/Foilmore
James O’Sullivan, C/o Patsy Teahan. Ticket sold by Jacks.
Round 3: Friday, June 22 home to Waterville
Noreen O’Keeffe, Stookisland. Ticket sold in Christina.
Round 4: Friday, July 6 home to Listry
Next weeks Jackpot is €7,100. If youre not in, you cant win.
MID KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE:
Under-14s: Under-14 County League Division 4 semi-final: GlenbeighGlencar/Cromane (GGC) 2-13, Churchill 4-10
Cromane were due to play Laune Rangers in Killorglin last Tuesday night in the first Mid Kerry Junior League game of the year. They
No luck for the GGC under-14s in last Wednesday’s county league semifinal in Cromane against a good Churchill side. The game saw two evenlymatched sides go toe-to-toe over the hour with three late unanswered Churchill points eventually edging them over the line. At the break GGC trailed by a solitary point, 1-6 to 2-4 and, despite having some great chances, could never shake off their opponents. During the second half each time they seemed to have got ahead Churchill countered with goals and those three points in a row in the last five minutes.
will have a series of games over the next six weeks as follows:
LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 16th May in the Cromane GAA Lotto were 6, 24, 11, 03
Tough luck on our lads but there’s still plenty of football to play in 2018. Team: Sean Scannell; Colm Kingdon, Liam O'Neill, Darragh Crosby; Matthew Naughton, Darragh Lynch, Tony Óg Duffy; Jason O'Connor, Cian Lyons; Ronan Sheahan, Charlie Foley, Fionn O'Sullivan; Seamus Moriarty, Darragh O'Connor, Derry O'Sullivan. Subs: Joshua O'Sullivan, Ross Bowell, Fionn Sheahan, Luka O'Sullivan, and Aaron Griffin. Under-12S: County League Phase 1 (round 5) result: Cromane 4-15, Ballymac 1-3 The Cromane under-12s rounded off the first phase of the county league with their fourth win from five games when they travelled to Ballymac and beat their second team last Thursday evening. Panel: Jamie Casey; Sadbh Casey, Alex Scannell, Liam Hayes, John Horgan, Ben Sugrue, Jack McGrath, Saoirse Harkin, Ryan O'Connor, Sean Keane, Ned O’Grady, Cormac Riordan, Daniel Griffin. County League Phase 2 (round 1) result: Cromane 5-11, St Mary’s, Cahersiveen 4-10 Cromane started phase 2 of the county league with a trip to Cahersiveen to play St Mary’s last Sunday. Cromane led by at half-time 3-7 to 1-5 and scored two second half goals, one of which didn’t make the official final score. This means, unfortunately, that the referee recorded the game as a loss but we, of course, are in the middle of appealing. Now, results are not the be-all and end-all of under-12 football but it is a pity that an ‘appeals’ process has to be launched when young players are involved, especially when an error is quite obvious. How and ever, our players were excellent on the night against a fine St Mary’s side, conditions deteriorated in the second half making it difficult for all players and, of course, officials. Our under-12s will also play St Pat’s, Blennerville, in round two this Sunday (at 6pm in Blennerville) in this phase two of the county league as well as Ballymac and Finuge (both for the second time this year), as well as Valentia. Plenty of football coming up. Panel: Jamie Casey; Sadbh Casey, Alex Scannell, Conor Hayes, Liam Hayes, John Horgan, Ben Sugrue, Jack McGrath, Saoirse Harkin, Ryan O'Connor, Sean Keane, Ned O’Grady, Cormac Riordan. County Junior League: Cromane ‘B’ 1-12, Dr Crokes ‘C’ 4-16 This junior league competition is always a good opportunity for young players as well as some who have been out of the game for a while to get themselves back in action and enjoying the game of football once again. In Killarney last Friday we had a number of players getting their first starts 42 West Kerry Live

le Gerard Murphy Why were both sides of the Civil War divide so evasive when it came to the death of Michael Collins? Why were they still trying to effect cover-ups as late as the 1960s? Determined to find the truth despite the trails of deception left by many of the key players, Gerard Murphy, a scientist, looked in detail at the evidence. Previous researchers have tended to concentrate on the reminiscences of survivors. Murphy instead focuses on information that appeared in the immediate wake of the ambush, before attempts could be made to conceal the truth. He also examines newly released material, and has carried out a forensic analysis of the ambush site based on photographic evidence of the aftermath recently discovered in a Dublin attic. These investigations have unearthed significant new evidence, overlooked for almost a century, that seriously questions the version of events currently accepted by historians.’ - An tEagarthóir
