Unique Solstice Ceremony At Kerry’s Oldest Burial Site Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí to celebrate mid-Kerry’s musical heritage A unique cultural celebration of the Summer Solstice at the iconic 6,000 year-old Killaclohane Portal Tomb near Milltown promises to be a special highlight of this year’s County Fleadh Cheoil which takes place in the mid-Kerry town later this month. The organisers are holding an openair celebration at tomb, Kerry’s oldest manmade structure and oldest burial site, on 21st June, the longest day of the year, against the majestic backdrop of Dingle Bay and the Sliabh Mish Mountains.

With music from centuries ago, dramatic percussion, poetry, song, a Solstice bonfire and a druidic ceremony, the event at Killaclohane invokes the spiritual connections with the Neolithic Age and draws on the theme for Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí this year: ‘Reconnecting with the Past.’ Featuring some of Kerry’s best musicians and performers, the event at the tomb will seek to connect with the cultural heritage of the area over many centuries and millennia.
Monday 9th - Friday 13th July
‘The enchanting portal tomb at Killaclohane has recently been dated to 3,800 BC and is the county’s oldest manmade structure and burial site. Evidence suggests it was the site of a human settlement, one of the first such examples in western Europe,’ said chairman of Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí, Owen O’Shea. ‘So, as the second day of the Fleadh happens be 21st June, we decided to honour our ancestors with a unique celebration of our musical history and heritage.’
Mini Soccer, Basketball, Football, Rounders, Unihoc, Tag Games, Treasure Hunts, Musical Games, Art & Craft, Fun Relays, Parachute Games & more
The event will open with a recitation and harp music from father and daughter, Chris and Aoibhe Horan and will feature a blessing ceremony with the Dingle Druid, Juli Ní Mhaoileoin as well as the lighting of a Solstice Bonfire with percussive rhythms from Drum Dance Ireland. Uileann piper Barry Lynch and harpist Reidun Schlesinger will perform some of the ancient music of Ireland and a group of local musicians will play the tunes they listened and danced to in mid-Kerry a century ago. Sliabh Luachra poet, Eileen Sheehan will recite some of her work and singer, Joan Greene will celebrate the different international Solstice ceremonies from around the world.

‘The tomb is set against one of the most spectacular backdrops in Kerry – Caherconree, the mouth of the River Maine and the Dingle Peninsula. It has to be seen to be believed. The event will be suitable for all ages and we will keep everyone well fed with a pig on a spit. We’ll finish with a grand finale involving all the performers as the sun sets over the historic site,’ said Owen. The event begins at 8pm on 21st June and there is a €10 admission fee for over-16s. As there is no parking on site, those attending will be transported from the Mid-Kerry Mart car park to the site on a free shuttle bus. Attendees are advised to arrive and park up early from 7pm. Toilet facilities and limited seating will be available and everyone should be dressed appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions. Enquiries to fleadh2018@hotmail.com Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí, hosted by Milltown-Listry Comhaltas Branch takes place in Milltown from 20th to 24th June and will feature free open-air performances from Stockton’s Wing, All-Ireland champions, the Shandrum Céilí Band, a Sunday céilí with Uí Bhriain, family fun and frolics, Spin City Funfair, competitions, sessions, a street entertainment competition and lots more.

Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 12th June will be The Guernsey
Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Juliet, a charismatic and free-spirited writer receives a letter from a member of a mysterious literary club started in Nazi-occupied Guernsey. Her curiosity piqued, Juliet decides to visit the island. There she meets the delightfully eccentric members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, including Dawsey, the rugged and intriguing farmer who wrote her the letter. As the secrets from their wartime past unfold, Juliet's growing attachment to the island, the book club and her affection for Dawsey will change the course of her life forever. The following week on Tuesday 19th June the feature will be the French film, Let the Sunshine In. Juliette Binoche delivers a luminous performance in the deliciously witty, sensuously romantic new film from acclaimed director Claire Denis). Isabelle is a divorced Parisian painter searching for another shot at love, but refusing to settle for the parade of all-too-flawed men who drift in and out of her life. There's a caddish banker who, like many of her lovers, happens to be married; a handsome actor who's working through his own hang-ups; and a sensitive fellow artist who's skittish about commitment. What reads like a standard romantic comedy premise is transformed into something altogether deeper, more poignant, and perceptive about the profound mysteries of love. 4 West Kerry Live

Kerry Fleadh 2018 Launch in Milltown- It’s Back! Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí: Wednesday 20th to Sunday 24th June A tingle of excitement could be felt in Milltown last Friday night at the official launch of this year's Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí by Minister Brendan Griffin, at the Bleachfields Bistro in Milltown. Traditional tunes played outdoors on a balmy June evening is a familiar sound in the mid- Kerry village long associated with fantastic musical events and this year's County Fleadh will maintain the high standards we have come to expect. Fleadh Chairman Owen O'Shea got proceedings underway and welcomed Kerry trad supporters back to Milltown after eleven years. "This year's committee has invested over €15,000 in free street entertainment, including two outdoor celiís, with triple All-Ireland champions 'The Shandrum Ceilí Band' on Friday night and local maestros Uí Bhriain on Sunday afternoon. A highlight for many will be the return of trad icons Stockton's Wing, who headlined the event in Milltown exactly 20 years ago, playing on the street on Saturday night. This year also has a special Solstice Event: an outdoor concert at the Killacloghane Portal Tomb in Milltown at sunset on June 21st, celebrating the deep shared traditional roots we celebrate at the County Fleadh. The recent discovery that this monument is the oldest structure in Kerry and perhaps in Ireland has inspired our 2018 Fleadh theme-‘Reconnecting with the Past.’" Minister Griffin welcomed the Fleadh back and said he's looking forward to the event. "I remember passing Milltown eleven years ago and the streets were hopping with music and dance. Its central location and hard-working volunteers make it a truly special venue." He added that outdoor music evokes a deep connection and thanked the evening's musicians Tim Kerins, Deirdre Keane, Kieran Kelliher, Mike Cronin, Tom O'Connor and Paul Sexton, before officially launching the 2018 Fleadh. Owen O'Shea and County Council Arts Officer Kate Kennelly both recalled fond memories of the late Dennis Courtney, the driving force behind bringing the Fleadh back to Milltown, and while this was a poignant moment for Denis' wife Ann and family, all speakers spoke of the committee's enthusiasm and commitment to make it a Fleadh Denis would be proud of. Chairman of the Kerry County Board of Comhaltas John Canty thanked the 2018 Fleadh committee, in particular County Secretary Karen Trench, for organising the ever-growing lists of competitors into an efficient program of competitive events. He also thanked all sponsors for helping to organise the event which now costs €70,000 to run. John said he was looking forward to a great Fleadh, as the hosting Milltown-Listry branch have such a fine pedigree of hosting world-class traditional music events.
Katelyn Reid of Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibne tops the podium after winning the Junior Girls Javelin at the All Ireland Schools Competition in Tullamore 10 West Kerry Live
As well as all the usual competitions, this year's Milltown festival will be a Fleadh with a difference and Owen concluded by welcoming lovers of music, song, story and dance to Milltown for a wonderful feast of free entertainment and fantastic events. These will also include family fun and frolics around Milltown on Sunday with Guido Fanzini, a funfair running all week and performances by musicians from Kerry branches on the main stage every evening. Farming News MAXIMISE GRASS GROWTH WHILE INCREASING FODDER After a highly stressful and long winter, farmers are planning for the year’s grazing season and winter ahead. The question many are asking right now is, how can I maximise grass growth while increasing fodder reserves for the future? The response is clear – build soil fertility to build resilience into the system. Why focus on soil fertility? • Many farmers will focus on reseeding, when the most cost effective way to grow more grass is to get the fertility of the soil right first. • The first step in getting soil fertility right is to make sure the pH is right. Lime will improve soil pH. Think of lime as being like oil in an engine. If you fill the tractor with diesel and forget about the oil, the system will cease. Similarly if you continuously apply fertilisers and forget about lime, then you are limiting grass growth. Remember, feeding good quality grazed grass is almost four times cheaper than concentrates. Soil fertility targets •
Soil pH between 6 and 6.5
•
Soils in index 3 for phosphorous and potassium
Building soil fertility should be seen as a capital investment •
It will cost €250/ha to move up one soil index
•
This cost should be budgeted into a farm development plan
•
Building soil fertility will make a return on investment of more than 2:1
Things to remember • Study your soil test results, so you can apply lime and nutrients in the correct balance •
Optimise slurry use first – then top up with fertilisers as required
•
Planning and budgeting is key
Soil fertility – the last word Getting soil fertility right is a key investment to maintaining a viable farming business. It maximises nutrient uptake and reduces environmental risks. MAXIMUM EU FARM PAYMENTS TO BE SET AT €100,000 A cap on the level of direct EU supports to farms across Europe will be set at a maximum of €100,000, with Member States able to set a national cap of between €60,000 and €100,000. However, in announcing the European Commission's proposals, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan said that it would be possible for farms to be split to ensure they can claim larger supports. He said that Member States can choose what national cap they want on EU farm supports, with a €60,000 to €100,000 limit proposed. This support, he said, will in effect be more when labour costs are calculated and said it was now up to the political will of the European Parliament and Member States to implement the proposals. The focus should be on smaller and medium sized farmers, he said. However, he admitted that it will be impossible to stop farms from being divided up as business units to draw down more supports. The proposals centre around a budget of €365 billion and aim to give Member States greater flexibility and responsibility for choosing how and where to invest their CAP funding, he said. The main features of the Commission's proposals for a modernised, simplified CAP include greater flexibility in how to use their funding allocations. Member States will also have the option to transfer up to 15pc of their CAP allocations between direct payments and rural development and vice-versa to ensure that their priorities and measures can be funded. Priority will be given to supporting the small and medium-sized farms that constitute the majority of the EU's farming sector, and to helping young farmers. Countries will have to set aside at least 2pc of their direct payment allocation for helping young farmers get set up. This will be complemented by financial support for rural development and different measures facilitating 12 West Kerry Live

It also announced that there will be higher ambitions on environmental and climate action and each Member State will have to offer eco-schemes to support farmers in going beyond the mandatory requirements, funded with a share of their national direct payments' allocations. At least 30pc of each rural development national allocation will be dedicated to environmental and climate measures and 40pc of the CAP's overall budget is expected to contribute to climate action. In addition to the possibility to transfer 15pc between pillars, Member States will also have the possibility to transfer an additional 15pc from Pillar 1 to Pillar 2 for spending on climate and environment measures (without national co-financing). RURAL ROAD SAFETY APPEAL AS SILAGE SEASON IN FULL SWING With the silage season almost in full swing, the state's dairy farmer organisation has appealed for all rural road users to be aware and concentrate over the next six weeks or so. All road users are asked seriously to exercise caution during this time. Over that period there will be a very significant increase in the number of tractors and other farm machines on rural roads and it was incumbent on all roads users - whether farmers, contractors, car users, cyclists or pedestrians - to take additional precautions to ensure that silage can be harvested safely and without any accidents on roads. Agricultural machinery has got bigger over the years and particularly on narrow rural roads, it is critical that all road users take extra care and 'expect the unexpected' over the next six weeks. Meanwhile since May 20, 2018, fast tractors must undergo periodic tests and must display certificates of roadworthiness (CRWs). A ‘fast tractor’ is defined as a wheeled tractor in category T with a maximum design speed exceeding 40 km/h. The Road Safety Authority has said if you use a fast tractor and you are unsure of its maximum design speed, you should consult its vehicle manufacturer or an authorised Irish tractor distributor. Exemptions A fast tractor will not have to undergo a commercial vehicle test if it is used: • for the purposes of agricultural, horticultural, forestry, farming or fishery activity solely within the State and mainly on the land where such activity takes place, including agricultural roads, forestry roads or agricultural fields • exclusively on a small island. This exclusion from the requirement for compulsory testing will apply to all of the islands off the Irish coast. However, the RSA has warned that it is important to note that an exemption from undergoing a commercial vehicle test is not an exemption from the requirement to ensure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition when it is used on a public road. New vehicles will be required to be tested after four years and every second year after that. They will be subject to the same test fees that apply to HGVs based on the gross vehicle weight for their design. EU DIRECT PAYMENTS – WHO GETS WHAT Many people wonder who receives what payments, and this is a matter of record for the public, as it is public money. But it is not the “Ordinary Joe” who receives the lions share of these payments, but the select few. That is why is would be a good idea if Big Phil gets his way to divide the EU payments more equally among farmers. And, just last week Teagasc published its annual farm survey which showed substantially different farm incomes across sectors, with the average dairy farm income at €87,000 while approximately half of all beef farms earned a farm income of €10,000 or less in 2017. One of the largest EU payments in 2017 was to Larry Goodman and his family, who received over €422,000 through their two farms, Branganstown and Glydee in EU payments - down from the €430,000 it received in 2016. Kildangan Stud, owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashin Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai received €150,000, while Godolphin Ireland - owned by the Maktoum family received €182,158.
Numerous county councils and Leader groups received significant monies from the EU, while Bord Bia received €2.8m in EU payments. Individual farmers who received significant EU farm payments included Wexford farmer Walter Furlong who has built up a large grain production outfit with his business partner Kevin Cooney. Between them they own the Cooney & Furlong Grain Company. Furlong farms around 3,500 acres of land in Wexford and Vegetable farmers O'Sheas, who recently secured a €70m contract to supply Aldi with potatoes received €238,989.
Michael Greaney Ltd
Agri Contractor Ballyguin, Brandon, Tralee, Co. Kerry.
Dublin farmers Michael and Gabriel Hoey, who own Country Crest and in January extended its deal with Tesco Ireland to supply all potatoes, onions and sweet potatoes to the supermarket in a deal worth over €60m, received €182,854. Holy Ghost Fathers, who run Rockwell College and a substantial 1,100acre dairy farm outside Cashel, received €150,228. Peter and John Queally received over €217,000 in CAP funding. The Queallys along with Dan Browne set up Dawn Meats in 1980. They were in 59th place on the Sunday Independent Rich List with a reported worth of €295m, up from €270m on 2017. The privately-owned company handles about 20pc of Ireland’s beef. Meat processor Kepak's farm in Ratoath which is and is owned by the Keating family, received €179,868. The Kepak farm finishes around 3,500 cattle a year. Teagasc Athenry received €2.5m and Animal Health Ireland, a non-forprofit organisation to advise farmers on disease regulations. So next time you wonder who gets all this money, it’s most likely not your neighbour but but business and state agencies. We are delighted to have received a Creative Ireland Kerry grant to run series of animation workshops for teenagers from September to December this year. The aim of the workshops will be to create a short animated film in Irish using a story from Celtic Mythology. A public showcase event will be held in the Dingle Hub in December 2018 to premiere the film and it will be submitted to the Young Animator of the Year Awards which are held during Animation Dingle in March each year. Students will have an opportunity to interpret old Celtic literature in their own style, through Irish and through a contemporary communications medium. This is a collaborative project between the Dingle Hub and Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB). Contact info@dinglehub.com for further information. We are also working closely with IT Tralee to bring GoalMine Summer Camps to Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne this June 25th – 29th. See the advertisement in this issue for further details. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. It’s hard to believe The Spud Off has come around again and that our wonderful family event is in its 9th year. Our parish heats will take place between 22nd June and 3rd July and contact will be made with parish organizers between now and then. A reminder also to all our primary school principals regarding the Children’s Art Competition which we are running this year. Basil Gnocchi with Tomato Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Gnocchi are basically little dumplings originating from Italy made from potatoes, flour and egg. They offer you a different way to serve potatoes and work well with so many flavours. With a little practice you will perfect light and delicate gnocchi but if they are overworked they will be dense and chewy. It is worth trying them and feel free to experiment with different flavours and you will be surprised just how easy they are to make. Ingredients 500g potatoes 1 egg, slightly beaten
2ú- 6ú Iúil (July) 9:30 - 2:00
150g flour (might not need all this)
Scoil Iognáid Rís (CBS)
some basil leaves salt and black pepper pinch of baking powder For the tomato sauce shallot garlic thyme
Glaoigh
tomato (fresh, tinned or passata) white wine (optional) For the garnish rocket parmesan Method Bake the potatoes in a hot oven until done. Allow to cool enough so you can handle them. Remove the skins and mash well to make sure there are no lumps. Put the potatoes in a large bowl and add the chopped basil, salt and pepper, baking powder and the egg and then add mix some flour in until it comes together (you are looking for a dough like mix but do not over work it). Keep the dough warm and use it straight away. Dust a work surface with a minimal amount of flour. Divide the dough into about 6 or 8 parts, take each part and roll to form a long roll. Using the back of the knife cut into equal sizes, continue until all are finished.

Meanwhile boil a large pot of salted water, add a batch of gnocchi to the pot and allow to cook until they float to the top. Continue to cook for a further one or two minutes - taste one; the flour should be cooked out. Remove and place in cold water to stop the cooking process, remove them once they are cold and place them on a tray. For the sauce Sweat the shallot in oil for five minutes then add the garlic and thyme, followed by the white wine (if using). Then add the tomatoes and cook for about 20 mins until rich and thick. To serve Heat a pan and add some oil and butter. Place the gnocchi in the pan and colour on both sides. Once browned and warmed through add the tomato sauce and rocket. Spoon on to a plate and serve with some Parmesan cheese.

Loving the Skin You’re In! Irene Ní Fhlannúra There is nothing quite like the Summer to expose every blemish, blotch or bump on the skin. While we welcome the return of the Sun, this warm, humid weather has us dressed down to our drawers and wishing we had begun a good skin regime months ago. No need to don the head-to-toe kaftan just yet - there is still plenty to do to get your skin glowing with health this summer and beyond! It is widely accepted in natural health care practices around the world that the skin reflects what is happening inside of us. Our intestinal health is often mirrored on the surface of our skin yet our innards are often the last port of call when skin problems arise. The skin is the largest of the body's organs and not only does it keep our insides in, it is also a major detoxification outlet that enables the elimination of waste products and toxins safely and efficiently from our bodies. Many skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and many forms of dermatitis are not necessarily just skin problems but may be a signal of poor intestinal health and sluggish detoxification function, most commonly in the liver and bowel. The quickest way to improve intestinal health is to address the burden of toxins in the gut whether they come from the food and fluids you consume or whether they are generated within the gut through an imbalance of good and bad organisms within the intestines, or produced because of poor digestion and food intolerances. Whole, plant-based food not only maintains great gut health - their vitamins, minerals and oils are also beneficial to the skin. Antioxidants such as vitamin A (as betacarotene), C and E can curb the damage caused by free radicals that are responsible for premature aging and skin damage. These vitamins are readily available in fresh fruit such as colourful berries, citrus fruits, kiwis and pineapples. Red, orange and vivid green vegetables such as tomatoes, red and yellow peppers, salad leaves and spinach also deliver great antioxidant power. Seeds, nuts and avocado are packed with vitamin E in particular sunflower seeds, almonds as well as our faithful greens - spinach and chard. Oils rich in vitamin E such as wheatgerm oil and sea buckthorn oil are often recommended for healing scars and burns on the skin - such is the power of vitamin E. The best way to get plenty of antioxidants in your diet is to have a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds everyday. Nature presents some of the most anti-oxidant rich plants in attractive
colours to entice us to eat them so turn your plate into a rainbow of colour and you'll be on the right track! Good quality, clean water is crucial for skin, liver and bowel health. Herbal teas which are particularly cleansing to both the inside and outside of the body include nettle, burdock, dandelion, fennel, anise, licorice and peppermint. Add cucumber, lemon or lime to cooled down teas for a refreshing Summer drink. Herbal and flower teas can also be used to cleanse and tonify the skin when used topically and are a lot more effective than some of the chemical-laden skin preparations on the market these days. It is estimated that the average person is exposed to over 500 chemicals through grooming products and household cleaning products every day. There is no doubt that everyone can make a significant reduction in unnecessary toxic exposure by choosing more natural body care items and cleaning products in the home. Much of what we put on our skin penetrates through the skin and enter the body. Many drugs such as nicotine, hormone therapy and pain relief can be administered through skin patches, as the skin is both an entry route and exit route for numerous substances. Most alarming is the level of toxic chemicals found in sunscreen lotion, gels and sprays. Despite the ongoing campaign to wear sunscreen, the incidences of skin cancer in Ireland continue to increase. Too much exposure to UVA light will result in aging, wrinkles and free radical damage while too much UVB will result in burning. Think A for aging, B for burning! SPF rating relates to protection from UVB while UVA is a star rating usually written in tiny writing at the back of the sunscreen. Both of these UV light are most potent during the Summer months due to the position of the Sun in the sky. If you have to spend many hours outside, particularly from 12 noon to 4pm, it is wise to use a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection – even on cloudy days. However, if you can control the time you spend in the sunshine, then expose your arms, legs and torso to Solar the sun’s Systems rays just until the skin starts to warm up, then cover up or go into the shade. Coupled with a cocktail of ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! chemicals in most sunscreens that penetrate
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
West Kerry Agricultural Show
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
Meeting on Weds 13th June 8.30pm
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

well beyond the outer layer of the skin, perhaps there is more to skin cancer than pointing the finger at the sun! It is never a good idea to allow the skin to burn - common sense, a hat and a long-sleeved shirt will protect your skin and the mouth-watering, colourful fruits and vegetables of Summer provide timely damage control for the lazy, hazy days ahead! Maharees Heritage Trail
The Maharees Heritage Trail was launched in Fahamore, Maharees by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD. The Maharees Heritage Trail is a scenic, coastal walk, completing a circuit of the famous Maharees tombolo and taking in the three bays surrounding the peninsula: Tralee Bay, Scraggane Bay and Brandon Bay. A loop walk on the Dingle Way, it is approximately 10km long and walkers can join the trail at a number of points. Maharees Conservation Association CLG developed the trail to raise awareness of the unique natural and cultural heritage of the area among the Maharees community and the many visitors to the area. Interpretive trail map signs funded by the Kerry County Council Community Support Fund can be found at Beal Geal, Kilshannig and Fahamore and complement existing interpretive signage on the route (on Birds of the Maharees and The Sand Dune System of the Maharees) which was funded through The Heritage Council, the Local Agenda 21 Fund, the Kerry County Council Biodiversity Office and Castlegregory Community Council. Speaking at the launch in Fahamore, Maharees, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin T.D. said “I am delighted to launch the Maharees Heritage Trail today. Visitors to the area will benefit from an enriched tourism experience as they appreciate the rich cultural heritage and huge ecological significance of Maharees.’ Kilian Kelly, Lecturer at IT Tralee (BSc in Wildlife Biology ) said: ‘The Maharees is an extensive area of coastal habitats that support a rich variety of wildlife. The sand dune systems, the islands, the sheltered bays and exposed shores accommodate a diverse variety of flora and fauna. Heritage trails such as this one on the Maharees allow people to engage with the wildlife and ecosystems around them, helping to raise awareness of the value of our natural heritage.’ Martin Lynch Chair of Maharees Conservation Association CLG and author of ‘The Land and People of Maharees’ said: ‘Maharees has a long history of human settlement, dating from the Bronze Age fulacht fias found at Magherabeg and the Early Christian Monastic Sites at Oileán tSeanaigh and Kilshannig. We invite walkers to come out to Maharees to enjoy the Maharees Heritage Trail experience; stay for a weekend, a day or even 22 West Kerry Live
take in a stage of the walk over a few hours.’ Martha Farrell Secretary of Maharees Conservation Association CLG said: ‘we are delighted to be able to share the heritage of Maharees through this signage project and we feel it really meets a need in this community. In a survey of both residents and visitors to Maharees by IT Tralee students (2017), over 80% of both residents and visitors stated they would like to learn more about the natural and cultural heritage of Maharees. We are very thankful to the Kerry County Council Community Support Fund and the Community Department for their support of our efforts to date. We have also recently secured funding through the Community Support Fund 2018 to commission a brochure about the Maharees Heritage Trail which will help us to further interpret the experience of the trail for walkers and to reach a wider audience.’

that we so often take for granted like shopping, taking their children to the park, a night’s sleep etc. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to support children in a joyous and creative way. This charity event will be open to the public and will be a wonderful chance for the community to witness the breath-taking talent of these young artists. The public’s support will reward the little masters for their creative work and will encourage them to continue to express themselves through art. By purchasing a piece of artwork, you will not only receive a beautiful gift for your home, but you will be giving the gift of quality time to the children and families who need it the most. In addition to the wonderful artwork for sale by the GREAT little MASTERS, I will also be donating an original framed painting worth €500 to be raffled off. The Limited Tickets will be €5 each and will be available to purchase in Bean in Dingle and Fitzgerald’s Centra from now. The winner will be chosen on the day of the event. The GREAT little MASTERS and I are looking forward to an inspirational day filled with art, love and community spirit. We would like to say a huge thank you to Fitzgerald’s Centra and Re Nua Natural Health Clinic for sponsoring this event.
The “GREAT little MASTERS” is an artist programme for children aged between 5 and 12 years and takes place in Dingle. As another term comes to an end, the GREAT little MASTERS will celebrate their 4th annual art exhibition on Sunday 17th June (Father’s Day) at 1pm at the Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat Street, Dingle. This year the children have decided to offer two paintings each for sale. All proceeds of sale of artworks will go to the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation. The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding to families of children up the age of five who suffer severe intellectual and physical development delay, enabling them to purchase home respite care. They also provide end of life care to all children up to the age of five. These children who as a result of their condition require intensive home nursing care. Honouring Tom Crean In Annscaul 22nd - 23rd June The weekend will be launched on Friday evening with a wreath laying ceremony in the Tom Crean garden by members of the Crean family and in the company of famous current day explorers. On Saturday the Tom Crean Endurance Walk takes place, organized by the Annascaul Walks, it is a truly fitting event to honour Annascaul’s great Antarctic explorer Tom Crean. The walk designed with the experienced walker in mind offers a great challenge to the participants over the 30 kilometers route with an elevation of 1,900 metres incorporating Mount Brandon, An Géaran Mór, Ballysitteragh, An Cnapán Mór, Cnoc Mhaoilionáin and finishing with a steep descent to Com Dubh and on to the South Pole Inn in Annascaul village. Again, this year there are some very special guests on the walk giving the opportunity to the participants to walk with the world’s best female explorers. Clare O'Leary: a mountain climber and adventurer. She was the first Irish woman to climb Mount Everest and complete the seven highest summits on seven continents. As part of the Beyond Endurance expedition she became the first woman to successfully ski to the South pole and cross the frozen lake Baikal.

Jan Meek is an Arctic explorer and Europe’s only triple Guinness World Record holder. Rowing across the Atlantic with her son in 101 days she has also successfully walked and skied 560km from Resolute to the North Pole. When Jan read in Scott’s diaries that Tom Crean hero of Scott and Shackleton expeditions wept when Scott asked him to return to base – completing the 200-mile journey to the pole became her goal. She and five women ‘Polar Maidens’ will undertake that journey in December 2018. Aileen Crean O'Brien granddaughter of Tom Crean. An unfortunate accident prevented her from completing the Centenary South Georgia Traverse in 2016 but in true Crean spirit she has worked hard and will take part in the Endurance walk. While the walk is self-guided, club members will be on hand throughout the day to provide support, man escape routes and check in stations and give much needed water and food. Every effort is being made to make the day as safe and enjoyable as possible. On completing the walk Enda O'Brien grandson of Tom Crean will present a medallion to each walker and club photographer William Glasgow Howe will capture the special moment. The day finishes with a celebratory BBQ at Hanafins bar where events of the day can be discussed with old and new friends and plans for the 2019 walk put in place. On Saturday evening Aileen Crean O'Brien and Bill Shephard, authors of ‘Honouring Tom Crean A Centenary Expedition’ will give a talk in the Jerome Connor Gallery. Annascaul Walks have invited the pupils of the local primary school Scoil Bhreac Chluain to take part in a ‘Junior Endurance Walk’. They too will each receive their special medallion to mark their achievement and get the opportunity to meet some of the world’s best explorers.

Tips To Beat The Heat
Michael Healy-Rae TD Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae
Eithne Griffin Try placing an icepack on the back of the knees as this is where the main acupuncture point for summer heat is located. Use high factor uva/uvb sunblock, regardless of whether or not you have a tan already you still need to protect your skin as the sunrays are very strong. Carry it with you all the time and rub some on at regular intervals. If possible avoid the sun at midday, stay indoors and rest.

While I was studying acupuncture in China we got up early in the morning and worked until about 11.30 with a siesta until 2.30 and then worked on late in the evening. The Chinese belief is that by getting up early, going to bed late and resting and staying indoors at midday will beat the heat and maintain your health. Tell that to your boss and see what he says!! Speaking of siestas the Chinese theory for this is that all the organs have a peak and resting time within the 24 hour day and the peak time for heart energy is interestingly enough between 11am and 1pm hence the main reason behind taking a siesta and taking the strain off the heart energy and avoiding health crisis in that time frame. With regard to diet in this weather it is also important to drink plenty cool drinks. Putting a slice of lime or lemon in water is very refreshing. In Chinese medicine foods also have an association with temperature and the seasons. Red meat and hot spicy foods and stews are warming foods and better in winter whereas salads are cooling foods for summer. Vegetables grown above the ground in the summer and below the ground in winter. So eat plenty salads, green colour vegetables, fruits like watermelon, peaches, mangos, fish is also nice and light and healthy. Eat little and often as digestion can often be effected with the heat consuming stomach fluids necessary for digestions. Ice cream and Smoothies are also very refreshing in this weather. Having cold baths and showers are also very important and having them often as it helps to shock the blood vessels and draw out the heat. Another important thing is if you play sport make sure to take regular water breaks. My main advice to managers and referees at games where young people are playing football and team sport is: "Please give them water breaks". Every professional player takes water breaks and for amateurs it should be even more important as they don't have the training nor the intensity for endurance. Movie Review - Solo: A Star Wars Story
Pierce Hoare My expectations for Solo: A Star Wars Story (directed by Ron Howard) were buried six feet underground once I saw the awful trailers for the movie. But somehow, the film managed to crawl its way out of that grave and proved me wrong, making itself out to be by far the best of the Disney Star Wars movies. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!), Emilia Clark (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards) and Donald Glover (Community, 30 Rock). In the infamously non-straightforward Star Wars movie timeline, the Solo is set between episodes three and four, but before Rogue One, and follows a young Han Solo, at which Ehrenreich does a good job acting as a young Harrison Ford, who is trying to make his way in the Galaxy, while meeting both new and old characters along the way. Donald Glover's performance as Lando Calrissian is also worth mentioning as well, since Glover does a marvellous job as the gambling, lady's man from the Original Trilogy. The visuals in the film are stunning, with one shot in particular with the Millennium Falcon being one of my favourites in Star Wars. The film also boasts being the only Star Wars film not to feature C3PO and R2D2, and maybe that was the film's downfall as it has yet to make its budget back after two weeks in cinemas, unfortunately. Most found some of the newer cast to be annoying, the droid L3 (who I found quite enjoyable) to be the main offender of the movie. I would recommend seeing Solo: A Star Wars Story, especially if you're a fan of all the films, as even the prequels get some praise in Solo. Hopefully Disney will continue the Star Wars Story series as I am quite interested to see stand alone Boba Fett film, said to be directed by James Mangold (director of Logan). Pierce Hoare is a 5th year student in Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne West Kerry Live 33

Carved Stones in Kilmalkedar: Clocha Greanta i gCill Maoilchéadair Isabel Bennett Is áit an-shuimiúil í an láthair eaglasta ag Cill Maoilchéadair. Tá an sáipéal Rómhánach ann ón dara aois déag agus an reilig mórthimpeall air, ach, chomh maith leis sin, tá cloch oghaim, cloch ghréine, cloch eile a bhfuil aibítir na Laidine greanta uirthi agus roinnt iarsmaí suimiúla eile le feiscint ann. Tá a scéal agus a dháta féin ag gach ceann acu, cuid acu ón séú aois, agus cuid eile tógtha chomh déanach leis an dara aois déag. Deir siad linn go raibh an mhainistir ana-thábhachtach ón séú aois ar aghaidh, agus saibhir a dhóthain leis i rith a saoil.

The ruined church and graveyard at Kilmalkedar are features of interest to many visitors to the area, and are familiar to many local people who may have family buried there, or have attended funerals there in the past. But there are also several interesting artefacts to see in and around the graveyard. The oldest carved stone on the site may well be that which is known as the Alphabet Stone, which has been dated, on the style of the carving of the inscriptions, to the 2nd half of the 6th century AD. Unfortunately the stone is broken at the top, damaging the carvings of crosses which are to be seen on opposite faces, but also the commencement of the secondary inscription on a 3rd face, which consists of the letters of the alphabet (as it might be used in the Irish language at that time). The primary inscription, in the middle of this secondary one, consists of the letters ‘dni’, which are a contraction of the Latin word domini, meaning ‘Lord’. Of a roughly similar date is the ogham stone. This too had two inscriptions, but one has been almost completely cleared away (perhaps there was a spelling error, or the person commemorated fell from grace?), and the main remaining inscription reads ẠNM MẠỊLE-INBIR/ MACI BROCANN (‘the name of’ [or ‘the soul of’] ‘MAILE INBIR the son of BROCANN’. This person may well lie buried under the stone. The hole in the top of the stone is an unusual feature, not generally found in ogham stones. It may have been present in the stone before the carving was made on it, and is associated, in local folklore, with the swearing of oaths. The sundial, one of only 9 early medieval sundials in the country, probably dates from the 8th or 9th centuries AD. The presence of this beautifully carved object tells us that the monastery at Cill Maoilchéadair was already quite wealthy at this period, having the wherewithal to commission an object which can only be classed as a ‘luxury item’ when used to tell the time in Ireland! This wealth would have come, in part, from its association with the pilgrimage route Cosán na Naomh, and donations from pilgrims. The large Latin cross which greets you as you walk through the graveyard towards the church may be as late as 12th century in date. It is quite simple in design, with short, stubby arms. When first erected, the cross may have appeared much higher, but the continuous burial within the graveyard over the centuries would have raised the ground level considerably. It is likely that, when originally erected, there would have been a painted panel (a crucifixion perhaps?) in the centre of the cross. As well as these stones, and many other shaped stones within the graveyard, the 12th-century Romanesque church itself contains many beautifully carved stones, and the site is worth a visit at any time. Chondromalacia Patella - Knee Pain Eddie O’Grady Patellar Tracking Dysfunction Chondromalacia patella, also known as ''Runners Knee'' is one of the most common causes of knee pain in runners. The condition results from irritation of the cartilage on the under-surface of the kneecap. This cartilage is smooth and the kneecap normally glides effortlessly across it during bending of the knee joint. In some individuals however the kneecap does not track so smoothly due to poor alignment and the cartilage surface becomes irritated, resulting in inflammation and knee pain. In more severe cases there can be breakdown of the cartilage. Chondromalacia patella can affect athletes of any age but tends to be more common in women, most likely due to anatomical differences between the sexes ie. wider hips in females which results in a greater angulation between hip and knee, thus resulting in increased lateral forces on the patella. Causes There are several causes both structural and dynamic which are linked to the condition. These include excessive foot pronation(feet turn out when running etc.), tight IT band, tight vastus lateralis(basically outer lower quad), weak or slow firing vastus medialis (basically lower inner quad), increased Q angle (simply put the angle between the outer hip and centre of the knee), a lateral femoral condyle that is not sufficiently
prominent anteriorly (simply put the knee joint does not fit together properly),and a small or high riding patella(knee cap).(McConnell, 2002)
knee. If the cartilage is softened or shredded, damaged layers can be removed during the surgery, leaving healthy cartilage in place .
Symptoms
References
The most common symptom is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee, behind the kneecap. This pain is often worse when you go up or down stairs. It also can flare up after you have been sitting in one position for a long time. For example, your knee may be painful and stiff when you stand up after watching a movie or after a long trip in a car or plane. In some cases, the painful knee also can appear puffy or swollen. Chondromalacia can sometimes cause a creaky sound or grinding sensation when you move your knee.

Treatment Suitable treatment may involve 1. Soft tissue work to loosen tightened structures such as vastus lateralis muscle, IT band, lateral retinaculum etc., 2.Strengthening of weak structures such as vastus medialis, glutes , hip abductors etc., 3. Correction of overpronation using orthotics, 4. Non steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation, 5. Rest with gradual return to exercise, 6. Taping to correct tracking can be a short term solution.(Hertling and Kessler, 2006) while you strengthen the vastus medialis muscle. Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid Bhain foireann caide Chiarraí an bonn ó scata sa chluiche Ciarraí in aghaidh an Chláir i Stáid an Ghearaltaigh an Domhnach seo caite. Bhí na nuachtáin tógtha ó bhonn ag éirim cur chuige agus gluaiseacht an dreama seo againne. Is foireann réasúnta An Clár, bhuadar go bog ar Luimneach, ach ba rás aon asail an chluiche ar an nDomhnach. An é gur thit an lug ar an lag ortha nó an é ná rabhadar abálta coimeád le Ciarraí. Níl amhras ach go raibh Ciarraí go diail agus seachtar do óganaigh ar an bhfoireann. Sea, triocha dó poinnte an líon poinntí ba mhó riamh a bhí ag Ciarraí i gcluiche mar seo. Bhí na tosaigh ar bior ó thús deire agus Pól ó Géibheannaigh ag réabadh rompa. Go deimhin bhí gach duine don bhfoirean níos fearr ná a chéile ach bhí Pól, Seán Ó Sé agus Ó Donchú nótalta. Bhí na cosantóirí go maith, níor scaoileadh isteach aon bhaide. Sa dara leath tugadh chun páirce Brian Ó Beaglaoi, ard imreoir, agus cuid don sean- dhream mar Donaghy Ó Súilleabháin Ó Meachair. Fágadh an captaen Fionn mac Gearailt ar an dtaobh líne. Tá súil agam ná raghaidh an bhua seo sa cheann ag na Ciarraíg mar glac leis go bhfuil faobhar, ná raibh le tamall ar na Corcaíg ach déarfainn go mbeidh an lá leis an ndream seo againne, ach ní bheidh sé bog ach a mhalairt.Pé scéal é, d’árdaigh an bhua, an chéad cluiche sa chomórtas, croí gach éinne againn, ach tá mórán pointí agus báidí le gnóthú sna seachtainí rómhainn. Ár seasamh oraibh. Chuir feabhas na n-imreoirí óga iontas agus misneach ar a lucht leanúna.Táimíd ag súil go mbeidh gach rath ortha. Deineadh creach gan éifeacht ar iománaithe na nDéise ar an nDomhnach. Fuair na Tiobradaigh báide nárbh bháide é agus baineadh pointe dóibh go mba phointe é. Cothrom a bhíodar le Port Láirge ach dhein maor cúil agus an réiteóir praiseach don gcúram. Ní d’aon ghnó. Cothram a bhí an dá fhoireann sa deire 2-22 an foireann. Gadaíocht agus ‘’báide na bpúcaí’, a bhí ag cuid dos na nuachtáin. Bhí an- imirt ann. Déarfainn go bhfuil sé le feiscint ná fuil aon fhoireann a bhuafaidh ar iománaithe na Gaillimhe fé láthair. Is dócha go bhfuil siad ag súil le craobh na hÉireann sa chaid agus san iomáint a ghnóthú. Mura mbuafaidh Ciarraí ortha, tá gach seans ná beidh aon bheann acu ar Bhleá Cliath. Pé rud a deir na Gaillbhéanaigh fanfam dílis dár bhfeara féin. Fágfaidh an foireann seo againne geárrtha acu é.Tá súil agam. Ach ná beidh an- chlibirt i mbliana agus scata cluichí le himirt sara ngealfaidh an Lá Mór orainn. Nách mór an gaisce a dhein Fearmanach Dé Domhnaigh. Bheadh póca teann ag an nduine a chuir airgead ortha mar ná raibh aon chuimhneamh fén spéir ag aon duine go mbeadh an lá leo. Bhí sé tuillte acu. Agus an bhfuil foireann caide na mban Chiarraí ar tháirseach na bua. Tá sort ai-
séirí déanta acu. Is trua gur gortaíodh [sa ghuala] Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh.Tá súil againn go mbeidh sí ar ais don gcéad chluiche eile. An- imreóir go bhfuil gá léi. Bhuaidh na cailíní ar Phort Láirge go mbíonn fóirne maith caide ban acu. Tá Corcaigh láidir ach níl siad chomh maith is bhíodar, ach tá cailíní na mór-chathrach ag súil le craobh na hÉireann i mbliana.
Tá daoine ar fuaid an domhain a mheasann gur cheart ginmhilleadh a bheith dlithúíl ach tá daoine eile agus cuireann an focal ginmhilleadh, scanradh agus olc ortha.
Ís mó duine a déarfadh go mbeadh an- sheans againne má leanann siad ag feabhsú ach an bhfuilimíd ag súil le iomarca ró luath? Tá súil agam ná fuilimíd.
Fuair Séamus ‘Eoinín’ Feirtéar ón mBaile Uachtarach Thiar bás seachtain ó shoin go hobann. Bhí 88 bliain slánaithe aige agus bhí a mheabhair a chiall agus a choisíocht aige dtí deireadh. Reifreann. Tá an liútar léatar a bhí againn le stáir thart agus bua 2 V 1 ag Sea. Bhí áiteanna i gCiarraí mar a raibh an bhua ag Níl mar shampla Brosna go raibh 57% Sea acu. Bhí furmhór mhór Chiarraí thuaidh láidir go maith le Níl ach bhí both amháin i Lios Tuathail a bhí 20% Níl. Is ait é mar scéal ach b’í Gaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne an ceanntar is mó a chaith Sea. Mar shampla bhí Níl ag 28% i nDún Chaoin, 27% Níl ar an mBuailtín. Bhí dhá bhoth sa Daingean, 22% agus 25% Níl. I Scoil Cheann Trá 26% a bhí ag Níl agus i gCill Mhic an Domhnaigh 35% Níl, Scoil Naomh Eirc bhí 32% Níl agus both na Muirí 25.90% Níl. Is ionann san gur é an ceantar seo againne is treise a bhí Sea i gCiarraí. Tréis an chlabarnach ar fad níl faic déanta i ndáiríre mar ‘sí Dáil Éireann a shocróidh cén saghas ‘ginmhilleadh’, a cuirfear i bhfeidhm, má cuirtear. Tá dochtúirí áirithe ag rá na beidh aon bhaint acu le aon saghas gin mhilleadh. Cinnte beidh achrann nách beag sara mbeidh aon chinneadh déanta ar cad é an saghas ginmhilleadh a bheidh againn, má bhíonn!

Pobal Chorca Dhuibhne - Sraith Cainteanna 2019 (Arna eagrú ag Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne i gcomhar le Coláiste na hOllscoile Corcaigh) Táimid ag prapáil don mbliain seo chugainn agus ag iarraidh tuairim a fháilt ón bpobal cén sórt cúrsaí a bhfuil suim acu iontu don dtréimhse 2018/2019. Cuid desna roghanna ná:
Mic léinn ó Montana a bhfuil cúrsa Gaelainne trí seachtaine á dhéanamh acu le Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh, ag Cloch Oghaim Bhaile an Reannaigh. Thugadar cuairt ar go leor láithreacha staire is seandálaíochta agus iad sa cheantar. (Pic. Kathleen Ort) An Mhaighdean Mhara. Scéal é seo a scríobh leanbh scoile. Chuala sé ag a athair--Muiris Ó Conchubhair é. Tá Cluthar in iarthar Co. Chiarraí. Deirtear gur fíor an scéal é agus creideann daoine fós go bhfuil an mhaighdean mhara so ag tabhairt cuairt ar an dtráigh. Cónaíonnn Muiris Ó Conchubhair ins an Oileán Tiar agus tá sé timpeall cúig mbliana a's trí fichid d'aois. Sá tsean aimsir bhí fear ina chónaí i gCluthar i dtigh beag cois imeall na trá. Lá amháin chuaigh sé síos ar an dtráigh. Do chonaic sé bean álainn ina suí ar charraig agus í ag cíoradh a cuid gruaige. Do bhí drom na mná leis an bhfear agus taobh thiar dhá drom bhí brat álainn de shíoda buailte ar chloch. D'éalaigh an fear síos agus do ghoid sé an brat agus siúd abhaile é. Do lean an bhean é agus dúirt leis "tabhair dom mo bhrat go raghad abhaile." Ach ní thabharfhadh an fear an brat di. Chuaigh sí go tig an fhir agus chuir seisean an brat i bhfollach. Ni raibh aon dul ar imeacht aici gan an brat. Phós an fear í agus mhaireadar go sásta ar feadh tamaill. Bhí ceathrar clainne acu. Lá amháin bhí an fear ag obair sa ghort. Dhearmad sé rud éigin a bhí sa chófra ina raibh an brat fé ghlas aige. Chuaigh sé abhaile ar a lorg agus níor dhein sé puinn moille. Leis an bhfotharaga a bhí air d'fhág sé an brat ar an dtalamh. Chomh luath a's a chonnaic an bhean an brat siúd léi fána dhéin agus sciob sí léi é. Phóg sí a ceathrar leanbh agus dúirt lena fear aire mhaith a thabhairt dóibh mar go raibh sí féin ag dul go dtína muinntir. Bhí an fear ag impí uirthe fanacht, ach níorbh aon mhaith dhó a bheith léi. Síos chun na trá léi go scléipeach agus d'imigh ó amharc I measc na dtonntracha gorma. Chaith an fear dul abhaile go briseadh croí agus aire a thabhairt dá cheathrar leanbh. Níor fhill an bhean in aon chor chuige, cé go raibh a shúil anáirde léi gach lá.

Cromane GAA MID KERRY SENIOR LEAGUE: Cromane 4-14, Keel 1-10 Cromane rounded off their Mid Kerry league campaign when they travelled to play Keel on Saturday evening. They produced some of their best football of the year by taking all two points with a commanding performance. Goals from Mikey Houlihan and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan gave us a 2-7 to 0-4 lead. Our backs did very well in the first half, including our three teenagers Brice Dourieu, Conor Sugrue, and Cathal Crosby.
COUNTY JUNIOR LEAGUE: Cromane 1-10, St Michael’s/Foilmore 4-14 Our ‘B’ team played their second game of the county junior league when they travelled to Ballinskelligs on Friday evening to play St Michael’s/Foilmore. Cromane’s goal came midway through the first half when Danny Shea netted. At half-time though we trailed by 2-7 to 1-4. We cut the gap to four, 1-6 to 2-7, early in the second half before falling away as our aging legs started to wilt. It’s great to have a ‘B’ team in action for the first time in over half a decade, well done to all who travelled and put on the jersey. Our ‘B’ team’s next county junior league game is at home to Waterville on Friday, June 22, throw-in 7.30pm). Team: Seán Reilly; Danny O’Connor, Gavin O’Connor, Eamon O’Connor, Brice Dourieu, Sean Healy, Enda O’Shea; Matt Colborne, Colin O’Sullivan; Aidan O’Sullivan, Paudie McCarthy, Ian Costello; Martin Sweeney, Danny Shea, Cian O’Keeffe. Subs: Kevin Casey, David Moroney. GO GAMES: The Go Games blitzes are up-and-running, so here are the remaining dates for our under-8s and their parents to take note of: Monday, June 11 - Cromane / Monday, June 18 - Milltown / Monday, June 25 - Keel
In the second half we pushed on with further goals from Mikey Houlihan (his second of the day) and Seán Teahan. A late point from Danny Shea sealed a fine 4-14 to 1-10 win.
FIXTURES:
This was our third win of the league but due to head-to-head results we miss out on a place in the Mid Kerry League final. A fine display and campaign which started back in January. Well done lads.
Sunday, June 10 – Under-12 County League Phase 2 Division 9 (round 3): Cromane v Finuge in Finuge at 6pm.
Next up for our seniors is the round 6 game in Division 4 of the county league when we welcome Beale to Cromane on Sunday 10th Throw-in on Sunday is at 2pm. Team: Paudie McCarthy; Brice Dourieu, John Michael Foley, Cathal Crosby; Liam Teahan, Conor Sugrue, Finbar Casey; Donnchadh Walsh, Darren Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Mikey Houlihan; Sean O’Sullivan, Shane O’Neill, Sean Teahan. Subs: Eamon O’Connor for Brice Dourieu, Danny Shea for Sean O’Sullivan, Enda O’Shea for Sean Teahan, Aidan O’Sullivan for Paul Patrick O’Sullivan. UNDER-12s: County League Division 9 result: Cromane 5-13, St Pat's, Blennerville 2-5 The Cromane under-12s continued their recent good form with another win last Wednesday evening. This time they travelled to Blennerville to beat the home side, St Pat's. Well done to all involved. MID KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE: Cromane 1-11, Beaufort 3-12 Cromane and Beaufort had to cope with torrential rain in Cromane last Tuesday evening but still put on a decent show. Cromane's best football came in the first half with Cathal Crosby at full back, Conor Sugrue at centre back, and midfielders Shane O'Neill and Finbar Casey all doing well. They led at the break by 0-9 to 0-6. Cromane kicked some fine points in this half, with the pick coming from Cian O'Keeffe, Mikey Houlihan, and Conor Sugrue. Cromane faded in the second half as Beaufort struck three goals in the third quarter. Cromane rallied and a goal from Martin Sweeney gave them a boost with five minutes left, narrowing the gap to five: 1-11 to 3-10, before Beaufort kicked the last two points of the match. Team: Jason Clifford; Brice Dourieu, Cathal Crosby, Gavin O'Connor; Enda O'Shea, Conor Sugrue, Shane Ahern; Finbar Casey, Shane O'Neill; Mikey Houlihan, Paul Patrick O'Sullivan, Aidan O'Sullivan; Martin Sweeney, Danny Shea, Cian O'Keeffe. ARTISAN MARKET in CYMS every Friday 10 to 1. CLOTHES BANK: Please do not dispose of household rubbish in the Clothes Bank at the Gaa Pitch. The collection was made last weekend and it was of no use because of household rubbish having been dumped into the Bank. It had destroyed the clothes that were already in the Bank. Hence the Gaa were penalized for the collection. MARRIAGE: Heartiest Congratulations to Michelle O.Reilly, Cromane and Australia and Eoin Hannon, Wicklow and Australia who got married last Saturday in Killarney with Reception in the Castlerosse Hotel. Best Wishes, Good Health, Happiness and luck for the future to them and their families. QUOTE: Taking a step back is sometimes the best way to continue forward. Jane Casey - Cromane Correspondent.
Glan Update - Dingle Peninsula Just to keep you up to date on the new environmental initiative for the Dingle Peninsula - “GLAN”. The beginning aim of GLAN (Green Local Area Network) is to help businesses make small changes such as reducing the amount of single use plastics they use, along with supporting other environmental actions. Businesses need to agree to make a minimum of 3 pledges to be part of the Glan initiative. 100% of almost 90 businesses approached in Dingle town have agreed to make pledges. The most popular pledge is to end supplying plastic straws. 99% of the businesses using single use take away plastic containers have pledged to change to biodegradable / compostable alternatives as soon as they can.. which is excellent news. Glan has got off to a great start in the Castlegregory area – 82% of businesses have been approached so far and all have agreed to make pledges. It is expected that 100% of the businesses in the Maharees and Castlegregory will sign up. Likewise the uptake rate is 100% in the Clahane & Brandon area. There are plans to roll out Glan in Annascaul in the next week or so and to other businesses on the Peninsula over the coming weeks. The interest in the #2minutestreetclean initiative has also been great and thank you to the businesses who want to come on board as Street Clean Ambassadors. Also, a big thank you to the Scouts who have been out doing their #2minutestreetclean in Dingle. Again, Kerry Co. Co. is supporting Glan and #2minutestreetclean in Dingle.

Geology of the Dingle Peninsula le Kevin Higgs & Brian Williams A field guide was written with love and enthusiasm by two internationally renowned geologists, Emeritus Professor Ken Higgs, University College Cork, and Emeritus Professor Brian Williams, University of Aberdeen, both of whom have worked for many years in the area, and have taught and inspired many of their students on the beaches, coves and headlands of the Dingle Peninsula. The book is dedicated to Ralph Horne, former Assistant Director of Geological Survey Ireland, who contributed enormously to promoting the modern geological understanding of the Dingle Peninsula. Speaking at the launch Koen Verbruggen, GSI Director said, "This book is amazing, it captures the beauty of the Dingle Peninsula, the importance of the geology, and explains the origin and science of the rocks in a way that is accessible to both geologists and non-geologists." The guide book includes a new 1:50,000 scale geology map of the peninsula. They were edited by Dr Brian McConnell, GSI, produced by Cartography Unit GSI and published by GSI An tEagarthóir
