Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 4th September will be the World War 1 drama "The Guardians". Set in 1915 in France, the setting is the Paridier farm where life has changed dramatically since the men of the family left home to go and fight on the front line. The women must grapple with the workload of the farm and the matriarch of the family brings in an outsider to help her daughter. New tools allow the women to triumph over the land, newfound independence is acquired, yet emotions are stirred especially when the men return from the front on short leaves.
The following week on Tuesday 11th September the feature will be the Italian drama "Sicilian Ghost Story". The film uses a horrific real-life story as the framework for a powerfully acted foray into surprisingly beguiling fantasy territory. In a little Sicilian village at the edge of a forest, Giuseppe, a boy of 13, vanishes. Luna, his classmate who loves him, refuses to accept his mysterious disappearance. She rebels against the code of silence and collusion that surrounds her, and to find him she descends into the dark world which has swallowed him up and which has a lake as its mysterious entrance. Only their indestructible love will be able to bring her back along. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams ROAD WORKS. The road works on the Dingle Camp Road are nearly completed and appear so far to make this particular section a much safer drive for both local and visitor traffic. It has also opened up the adjoining countryside which has so many attractive locations hidden in the past by overgrowth from public view. Work on the next stage of the Dingle Ring Road is also progressing nicely but no sign yet of any work commencing on the Green Street Car Park extension. Hopefully both developments will be completed by next summer. PEIL. Good Luck to the Kerry Minor Team who contest the All Ireland Minor Football Final shortly. Dingle and West Kerry have a strong representation on the panel this year. Also the Dingle Senior Team set out in their quest for that elusive Co Senior Championship Title and we hope that 2018 might be the year that will see our name etched on the cup again. HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Many thanks to the Dingle Historical Society for another wonderful series of interesting talks on local and national events and happenings of the past. All evenings were very well attended which shows what a huge interest there is in our history much of which could be lost without the work and enthusiasm of our Historical Society. 6 West Kerry Live
EVENTS. All road users are asked for a little extra patience this weekend as there will be some delays and rerouting of traffic between 9a.m. and 3p.m.for the Dingle Marathon. This event in its 10th year attracts huge entries and is now one of the sporting highlights on the Athletics and Fitness Calendar in Ireland. A big CÉAD MÍLE FÁILTE to all involved and wish everybody an enjoyable and memorable weekend here in Corca Dhuibhne again this year. The annual DINGLE TRAD FEST takes place the following weekend and coincides with the very popular Tommy Griffin over 35s football tournament. Both events have large followings and provide plenty of excitement for locals and visitors alike. Full details available elsewhere in this edition. TIDY TOWNS. The recent An Taisce survey on Litter in coastal areas highlighted cigarette butts on our streets in Dingle as a major issue which should be tackled immediately. This problem should be easily improved but needs a big effort particularly from business owners who do not provide specific smoking areas off their premises. We request all bar and restaurant premises to do a daily cleanup on the streets outside their outlets and dispose of the litter properly not just brush on the road under parked vehicles. It is almost impossible for the Council staff to access the litter as street side parking seems to have all available spaces full on a 24 hour basis. So a little effort will hopefully make a big difference in the next such survey.
Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Have You Seen One Of These Birds?
Coffee And Treats To Assist The Work Of Kerry Hospice Fancy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat?. That will be slogan across Kerry in September as thousands of cups of tea and coffee will be consumed in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Friends, neighbours and entire communities are busy preparing for Irelands biggest coffee day on September 20th. Last year more than 40 coffee mornings were hosted in Kerry raising more than €40,000 during the Bewleys sponsored event.
It’s a Manx Shearwater, a seabird that breeds in large numbers on the Blasket Islands. They have started migrating to their winter feeding grounds off South America and some of them, attracted by the bright lights of our towns and villages, become stranded and need some help to get airborne again. If you find one of these birds, please ring one of the volunteers listed below who will come and collect the bird and release it safely back to the wild. If possible, put the bird into a cardboard box; do not give it any food or water and keep it in a quiet and safe place until one of the volunteers arrives. With your help we have been able to rescue dozens of stranded shearwaters over the years - Thank you!
One of the Kerry Hospice volunteers, Kathleen O Connor of Annascaul / Inch, will once again host a coffee day at her home. “This is much more than a charity event. It’s a social event where friends and neighbours come together to chat, have some home baking and refreshments to help those on their cancer journey,” said Kathleen. “It’s a time we think of loved ones and celebrate the wonderful time we had with them. Right across Kerry friends come together for the day baking and raising much needed funds for Kerry Hospice. Why not be part of this great day.” All the monies raised in Kerry on September 20th will stay in Kerry. “The money raised from the day will help in the funding of the €500,000 that is needed for the many Palliative Care services that are provided in Kerry. This includes the running costs of the Day Unit, Inpatient Unit and the home care services. If you would like to host a coffee morning please get in touch with Andrea on 0876413449,” said Kerry Hospice P.R.O. Andrea O’Donoghue. The Tony O'Donoghue memorial walk will take place in Blennerville next Saturday (2nd September) at 5pm from the GAA grounds.

I fell in love with the Dingle Peninsula, and I felt compelled to create a photographic record of the beautiful and ancient standing stones to be found here, most of which hark back to the Bronze Age. Water-filled ditches, steep mountainsides, swamps or bull-dwelling fields did not deter me in my quest to capture the perfect image of each gallán's awesome presence. On my journey I had the privilege to meet wonderful people who shared their memories and their insights into these stone guardians of our cultural landscape. I present this union of stones and stories to you in the e-book, and I hope you too enjoy the journey. -
Cyril Harrington
This book contains 500 pages, with as many beautifully-crafted photographs of standing stones and of the people of Dingle, both born here and those who have settled here from all around the world. Tá 500 leathanach ins an leabhar seo, leis an méad céanna griangraife de na galláin agus na 150 daoine leis a scealta féin.

Farming News
Which are the participating Co-ops/registered importers? A full list of participants will be made available on the Department’s website.
Glas Scheme In Response To Fodder Issues Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., has welcomed the signal from the European Commission on their agreement to some proposed adjustments to the GLAS scheme for this year in response to the current fodder shortages. This proposal will now have to go through some additional procedures before it can be formally ratified.
Fertiliser And Slurry Spreading Extension Not Enough. The recently announced extension of the fertiliser and slurry spreading period has been welcomed by farm leaders, however, further “suites of measures” will be required to address fodder fears, it has been stated. According to DAFM sources, some flexibility had been secured on an extension to the closed period for spreading chemical and organic fertilisers, in the hopes of allowing farmers to maximise autumn grass growth for fodder production. The deadline has been extended for chemical fertiliser from mid September until the end of September, and the deadline for the application of organic manures from mid October to the end of October.
The Commission signalled that the Irish request will be considered for formal approval when it has been fully processed through the required procedures. It is proposed that the measures will be effective from Saturday 1st September and this will be confirmed in advance subject to all remaining procedures being completed. These proposals to the Commission are based on a detailed environmental assessment. This demonstrated that the action of mowing Low Input Permanent Pasture parcels is not considered to have a negative impact on achieving the environmental objectives of the action as it is now entering the late stages of the growing season for many floral species. The parcels have been maintained using the appropriate grazing regime and have adhered to the fertiliser and pesticide restrictions. This has allowed the flora present to germinate and for pollinators and other invertebrates to maximise the potential from the floral diversity within the parcels achieving the desired annual outcome of the action. These measures will provide a valuable extra source of fodder and will hopefully complement some previous measures introduced, earlier this summer. The Green, Low-Carbon, Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS) scheme is the main agri-environment scheme under Ireland’s rural Development Programme. The specific flexibilities are in response to weather difficulties this summer will be an amendment to the specifications for two GLAS actions for those participants with the actions. The two changes are specifically designed to add to the stocks of winter forage for Irish farmers and will be: • Low Input Permanent Pasture: An amendment to the specifications for 2018 to provide for the use of Low Input Permanent Pasture parcels for silage/hay production in the period 1 September 2018 to 1 December 2018 has been sought. There are 37,800 GLAS participants with the LIPP action covering an area of over 269,000 hectares • The Environmental Management of Fallow Land: For 2018 it is proposed that of- takes be permitted on a once off basis for 2018 in the period 1 September 2018 (after the nesting season) to 1 December 2018. • All GLAS participants with these relevant actions as well as their advisors will be notified by the Department in advance of the flexibilities becoming operational. €4.25 Million Allocated For The Introduction Of A Fodder Import Support Measure €4.25 million has been allocated to a new Fodder Import Support measure. In light of the recent severe drought conditions and their impact on an already difficult fodder situation, this new scheme is being introduced to alleviate the cost of importing fodder from abroad. This additional commitment to securing adequate fodder supplies builds on a range of supports already put in place. This measure is being introduced to reduce the cost to farmers of imported forage (hay, silage, haylage, alfalfa etc.) from outside the island of Ireland. The measure will operate through the Co-operatives/registered importers and will cover forage imported from 12th August 2018 to 31st December 2018 and will be subject to EU State Aid (de-minimis) rules. It must be stressed that while the measure will operate through the Cooperatives/registered importers, the actual beneficiaries will be farmers who need supplies of fodder. As was the case in the earlier Fodder Import measure of last spring, participation will be straightforward for the farmer who contacts a participating Co-op/registered importer and purchases fodder. DAFM will subsequently reimburse the Co-op/ importer with a contribution towards the cost of transport. How do farmers apply? Farmers should contact their local participating Co-op/registered importer indicating their intention to purchase, and volume of fodder requested. Farmers pay the Co-op/registered importer for the purchase of the fodder. How will payment be made? The Department will pay the participating Co-op/registered importer a standard contribution towards the cost of transport. 12 West Kerry Live
A systematic operation to source and import fodder from overseas locations would have to be planned, aided and introduced as early as possible. The ICMSA leader highlighted ongoing issues over crop failures and low grass production throughout mainland Europe over the summer months. As such, he outlined that demand for spare and available fodder will soar for the season ahead. “It is necessary for the Irish Government to move quickly and decisively to source and facilitate importation,” he said. Five Alternatives To Straw Bedding While farmers across the country are searching high and low to find straw bedding to house their animals this winter, it’s important to look at all your options before making a splurge. Woodchip Woodchip pads may have a role as an outside ‘lie back’ to an existing animal housing unit to reduce the demand for indoor bedding. Woodchip for indoor bedding is more popular, although there is little experience of this in Ireland, he explained. He also said that in the UK, it is advised to place 10 cm of woodchip initially and top up every week or so, depending on the diet. Woodchip can also be used under straw bedding to reduce straw usage and improve drainage. Woodchip, in general is very suitable as bedding. Animals stay clean and there is little dust from it, he explained. He said woodchip can hold up to 4 times its weight in water, compared to straw holding up to 2.5 times its weight. A 100m3 load weighing 20 to 25 tonnes will cost approximately €1,230 delivered including VAT, he said. He also said that if farmers choose to re-use spent woodchip, a ‘chunky’ woodchip should be used, costing €2,000 per load delivered. It can be spread directly on land or spread and ploughed in, he advised. Peat Bedding Peat bedding keeps livestock warm, clean and dry with minimal labour, according to Fallon. Costing approximately €1,581 per artic load delivered, he said it is very cost effective. It can last for months and can be spread on the land after use, adding nutrients to the soil. At Gurteen Agricultural College, peat bedding has been used for years and they have found a deep layer works best, 2.5 feet is placed in the back of the pen and it slopes down to 10 inches near the slats where the animals feed, he explained. When the top layer becomes wet the whole lot is dug up, placed out into the yard, mixed up and put back in, he said. Some 350 m3 (14 silage trailer loads) was used in the winter of 2017/2018 to bed 50 dry cows and 140 weanlings for 5 months. Rushes Rushes are a bulky bedding material that are not as absorbent as straw and should be let dry out for a few weeks after cutting. A good ‘crop’ of rushes will yield about 8 bales per acre and are currently selling €8 a piece, he said. Rush bedding can be spread back on land. Sawdust Sawdust can be dusty and is not suitable for calves unless cleaned out and replaced regularly. Calves may also tend to eat sawdust and shavings. Miscanthus is clean, dust free excellent bedding but is generally not available and like straw import is not an option. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Dark Chocolate Tart with Salted Caramel Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Looking for a nice dessert? Well then try this dark chocolate tart, it is a classic dessert and I think that everyone who loves to bake should have a few chocolate desserts in their collection, this is defiantly one of them. If you have never baked and have always liked the idea, try this and practice it once or twice and you will be able to mastered it forever. Ingredients For the sweet pastry 300g flour 150g butter, diced 75g caster sugar 1 egg
½ tsp. sea salt, plus more to taste A few drops of vanilla extract, plus more to taste Method For the sweet pastry: Put the flour and sugar in a bowl and using your fingertips rub in the butter. Continue this until it resembles a sandy texture and there are no lumps of butter remaining. Mix in the egg. Bring this together and add a tablespoon of water if needed. Once this has formed a dough, cover it with cling film and allow it to rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. To blind bake the pastry Preheat the oven to 180ºC Roll out the pastry and place it in a nine inch tart tin. Place some parchment paper on top of the pastry and add baking beans to cover the pastry and to come up to the top of the tin. Bake this for about 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5 minutes. For the filling Turn the oven down to 120°C.
400 g dark chocolate, (minimum 60% cocoa solids), finely chopped
Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Bring the milk and cream to the boil then pour over the chocolate, whisking briskly to form a smooth, glossy mixture. Stir in the eggs. Pour the chocolate mixture into the tart case and bake for 20-25minutes, or until just set.
150ml full fat milk
For the salted caramel
250ml whipping cream
Melt the butter in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan over a medium heat. Add the sugar, cream and salt and whisk until well blended. Bring to a very gentle boil and cook for about five minutes, whisking occasionally.
1 tbsp. water For the filling
2 eggs, lightly beaten For the salted caramel 60g butter 60g dark brown sugar 120ml cream
Remove from heat and add one teaspoon of the vanilla extract, stirring to combine and this is where you can carefully taste the sauce (mind it’s hot!) to see if you want to add additional pinches of salt or drops of vanilla. Tweak it to your taste, whisking well after each addition. Enjoy!!!

Berry, Berry Good Reasons To Eat Our Native Superfood! axanthin have long been proven to protect our delicate eyes from macular degeneration and damage caused by sun rays and other sources of UV radiation. Blueberries are a well-known source of lutein and zeaxanthin but our native blackberries do the job just as well. All antioxidants found in Nature offer a wide range of anti-cancer and anti-aging properties, primarily by their ability to protect and repair our DNA from the daily onslaught of free radical damage - which is involved in the onset and progression of cancer, aging, inflammation and neurological diseases.
Irene Ní Fhlannúra
When it comes to Superfoods we can be quick to fork out big bucks for some exotic plant from far, far away that promises to be the elixir of life. The stuff growing around us since the year dot is often overlooked in favour of the new kid in town! There is no official or legal definition for "Superfoods" but it has become a bit of a buzz word in the area of food and health. Under EU legislation the use of "Superfood" in food labelling is not allowed unless it is accompanied by an authorised health claim that explains to the consumer why the product is good for their health. Despite this, the term is still flaunted making some foods super attractive for those seeking super health. Goji berries, moringa, acai berries, matcha tea are some of the newly crowned Superfoods but we do not have to travel so far to find a food that is truly super and growing in our own backyards.
Tannins in blackberries help reduce intestinal inflammation, alleviate haemorrhoids and soothes the effects of diarrhoea. The gut also benefits from its fibre content of 8g per cup which amounts to more fibre than a cup of bran flakes. Unlike bran, the fibre in blackberries helps lower cholesterol too, making this a heart-friendly fruit relevant to a nation plagued with cardiovascular problems. Its sweetness comes from xylitol, a sugar alcohol found in the fruit fibre. This type of sugar is absorbed more slowly and does not cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels, making it a guilt-free treat for diabetics too. Since heart disease, cancer and diabetes are the top three killer diseases in our country it is no wonder blackberries are so prolific!
own super food doesn't need a label or packaging - only a bucket, a clean hedgerow and time to ramble along the brambles gathering a timely gift from Mother Nature. If I wasn't writing about them I would be out there picking them right now! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat St, Dingle 066 9151360. The leaves too have much to offer. Ancient Greeks were known to chew blackberry leaves to relieve bleeding gums and mouth ulcers. Native Americans (as did our own medicine folk) used them as a poultice for wounds, rashes and insect bites. Sore throats can be soothed by gargling blackberry leaf tea and women's woes were traditionally treated with blackberry juice, noted for its ability to regulate menstruation, support blood clotting and act as a muscle relaxant.
Blackberries have been with us for over 2000 years providing us with a source of food and medicine with its briars' protecting us from would-be marauders. Although their thorns may not have been enough to keep out the pillagers, their nutritional profile packs an impressive punch that ranks them among some of the most super of foods in the world. Making Connections and Celebrating a Watery Heritage in Annascaul August 18-26 was National Heritage Week and this year’s theme was “Share a Story – Make a Connection”. With this in mind Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group organised a Community Scanning Day on Saturday 18th. Residents of the village and surrounding townlands were invited to bring old documents and objects to be scanned or photographed and to share the stories connected with them. This is the first step in building an online Community Archive for Annascaul. There are eighteen such village archives in Ireland but none in Munster. The idea of holding a scanning day comes from events held in the USA but in a pioneering move this seems to have been the first one in Ireland. The response was somewhat overwhelming, with three scanners in constant operation and the event running an hour overtime. Now the group have the long but fascinating task of picking through the images and pages of notes taken and starting to assemble the archive. Examples of things that were brought included medals, family trees, farm implements and auction catalogues. Stories ranged far from Annascaul to such places as the Middle East, Africa and America. Sunday, August 26 was Water Heritage Day and the weather responded by providing heavy rain throughout the night before and on and off showers on the day itself. Dr

Andy Fogarty’s well delivered talk on how to identify macroinvertebrate life in a river and thereby gauge its health was of great interest: it appears the Annascaul River is in very good condition. It was originally hoped to carry out sampling of the river to demonstrate this, but the roaring waters in full flood made this impossible. Undaunted, a large group of enthusiastic and adventurous attendees walked and scrambled along the banks of the river, following the route of part of the riverside walk currently being developed by the Annascaul Walking Club. After a break to eat lunch and dry off a little, there was an opportunity to take a walk around the village and see the many wells, springs and pumps that once supplied water to the village. Special thanks must go to the Barton family who allowed access to their well, a former source of water to those en route to Scoil Bhreac Chluain. The day finished with a dive into the archives to recall the thirty year long campaign by Dr Kane, local medical officer of health, to replace the village’s stagnant and polluted well with a healthy water supply and his constant battles with the local politicians of the day. Many thanks to all that helped these events to A group of volunteers discussing one of Annasbe so successful and for truly “sharing a story caul's recently restored pumps. and making a connection”.

I mentioned before that a group of us will attend the International Energy Agency Symposium and Gas Networks Ireland workshop in UCC on Sept 6th to learn more about bioenergy and GNI’s €2Bn fund to support the creation of 350 anaerobic digesters on farms in Ireland. This event is open to the public so please register here if you would like to attend: http://www.marei.ie/seai-iea-bioenergy-symposium/ or contact info@dinglehub.com for further information. The Dingle Hub will host a series of animation workshops for teenagers on Saturday mornings starting on the 22nd September and running until December. The aim of the workshops will be to create a short animated film in Irish using a story from Celtic Mythology. A public showcase event will be held in the Dingle Hub in December 2018 to premiere the film and it will be submitted to the Young Animator of the Year Awards which are held during Animation Dingle in March each year. Students will have an opportunity to interpret old Celtic literature in their own style, through Irish and through a contemporary communications medium. This is a collaborative project between the Dingle Hub and Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB). Spaces are limited so please contact info@dinglehub.com for an application form before 12th September. See the advert in this issue for further details.

Cathair na bhFionnúrach / Ballynavenooragh Stone Fort By Isabel Bennett Molaim go mór cuairt a thabhairt ar Chathair na bhFionnúrach mara bhfuil san déanta agat go dtí seo. Tá an chathair suite i mBaile na bhFionnúrach is níl rófhada ó Shean-Scoil a’ Chuasa i bParóiste Mhódhrach ag bun Chnoc Bhréanainn. Tugann an tochailt a deineadh ann sna 1990aidí léargas maith dhúinn ar chaiseal a raibh ardstádas aige. Bhí ardáin chéimneacha laistigh den gclaí ar an láthair seo, rud a chabhródh le cosaint na háite dá mba ghá. Tá seoimrín sa bhfalla (agus bhí an tarna ceann ann atá scriosta anois), a sholáthródh stóras nó dídean. Bhí dhá chlochán cloch ar an láthair, agus uaimh ag imeacht amach ón gceann beag. Bhí cosán cloch ó bhéal an chaisil go doras an chlocháin mhóir. I measc na n-iarsmaí a fuaireadh ar an láthair tá potadóireacht, sceana iarainn, blúire de shábh iarainn agus blúiríocha de phóiríní gorma gloine. Fuaireadh áras chun miotal leáighte a dhoirteadh amach agus fuílleach iarainn ó fhoirnéis chomh maith ann; léiríonn na hiarsmaí sin go raibh nithe miotail á ndéanamh ar an láthair. Although the several stone forts (or cashels) situated around Slea Head and on the more welltrodden parts of the Wild Atlantic Way route are well known to local and tourist alike, there is another equally as interesting site situated in Baile na bhFionnúrach, only a very short detour away from the main driving route. This cashel (SMR KE034-041----), a National Monument in State Care, is signposted up a side road from the old school building known as Sean-Scoil a’ Chuasa, and is well worth a visit. The site, which in the main dates from the early medieval period (c. 650-1000 AD), was excavated in the 1990s. Inside the stone-walled enclosure is a 2-roomed house, which would have been the main dwelling of the family that lived here. From the smaller of the rooms there is an entrance to a souterrain (an underground passage, now closed), which would have been used for storage (perhaps of perishable goods, and maybe also of any family valuables). There was one hearth (where a fire would have been set) in the smaller room, and two in the larger – not necessarily used at the same time. There were also several pits and post-holes, including indications of a small fence arrangement around the entrance to the souterrain, perhaps to stop people from falling into it. There is a paved drain running around inside the wall of the larger room, which also contained an iron-smelting furnace. It is likely that both rooms had thatched roofs. The wall of the enclosure contains one surviving large wall chamber (of an original two), and the wall also has stepped terracing, allowing easy access to the top (which would have been higher than what survives today). This would have aided in defending the site, if necessary. A stone pathway survives, leading from the entrance gate to the door of the larger room. There is a commanding view all around from the site, including to north, to the sea and the inlet of Cuas a’Bhodaigh, allowing the occu30 West Kerry Live
pants to have fair warning of the arrival of friend or foe. The land surrounding the monument is of relatively good quality, and the family living here would have been farmers. There was a later re-use of the site in the 13th century, when a large pit outside and to the north of the larger room was dug and partially lined with stones. It was used for disposing of rubbish and also as a latrine, and contained organic remains including apple, blackberry, hazelnut and grape seeds as well as straw, grasses and flax. Here was found a lathe-turned platter, and also a lathe-turned lid which had a mirror inserted into it. Two pennies of mid-13th-century date, from the reign of Henry III, were also found on the site, confirming its later use. There were not very many other finds – some sharpening stones and other simple stone tools, some fragments of imported Mediterranean pottery, two iron knives and a fragment of a miniature iron saw, blue glass bead fragments, and crucible fragments from the iron-smelting
furnace found in the larger room. If you have not yet visited this site, give yourself a treat and go there soon – you will surely enjoy the outing! More detailed information about the site can be found at http://www.westkerrymuseum.com/bearla/ballynavenooragh.html or, as Gaeilge, at http://www.westkerrymuseum. com/gaeilge/gballynavenooragh.html. DRÉIMIRE & CLARE SANDS Dréimire formed as a two-piece group in Dingle County Kerry by locals Ben Janning (Bass) and Mattie Barker (Guitar). Having both studied music and worked as session musicians, a wide range of music and influence can be heard intertwining throughout their set, ranging from traditional Irish tunes (O Carolan) to Gyspsy Jazz (Django Rheinhardt), as well as contemporary Jazz (Mark Lettieri) and Funk (Victor Wooten). Clare Sands is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter hailing from the vibrant musical city of Cork. Gracing a fender strat guitar in one hand and electric violin in the other, Sands has a unique ability to blend Jazz/Funk/Latin music with a Celtic twist, backed by an eclectic five piece band. Movie Review Ant-Man & The Wasp
Pierce Hoare Ant-man and the Wasp (2018) is the sequel to 2015’s Ant-man, directed by Peyton Reed. The film stars Paul Rudd (Friends, Clueless) as Antman, Evangeline Lilly (Lost, Real Steel) as The Wasp and Michael Douglas (Basic Instinct, Wall Street) as Hank Pym. The film follows the trio attempting to bring Hank’s wife, Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), back from the “quantum realm”. Various people block the path to their goal, most notably the film’s main antagonist “Ghost” (played by Hannah John-Kamen) who possesses the ability to phase through objects. While the movie is quite funny, it doesn’t quite recapture the feeling of the first, since Edgar Wright (The Cornetto Trilogy, Baby Driver) had a hand in writing the first before leaving over creative differences. The action in the movie is always entertaining to watch with Ant-man and Wasp’s shrinking and enlargement powers. The only major complaint I have is (spoilers from this point on) how they set up an interesting moral dilemma between two characters only for it to not matter in the end, which I found annoying. The special effects in the movie are on par with most of the other marvel movies and the Quantum Realm looks even more beautiful than it did in Ant-man 1. One last thing I will say about the film is that there are 2 post credit scenes but only the first one is worth waiting for, as it ties into Avengers 3. I would only recommend this film if you are interested in a mix of “Honey I Shrunk The Kids” and “Mission Impossible”, or if you just want to know what Ant-man was doing during Infinity War. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Lumbosacral Plexopathy Eddie O’Grady Recently I had a patient present with footdrop (foot drops and drags as you walk due to weakness in dorsiflexor muscles), also severe pain down the leg, along with lumbar-sacral pain(lower back area). Initially this might appear to be signs of disc herniation with nerve root compression, even though the footdrop would be fairly uncommon with that condition. An MRI showed the spine to be normal. We also looked at anything that might have injured the peroneal nerve which is quiet close to the skin on the lower leg, which in itself could cause the footdrop, but there was no sign of injury. We were also able to rule out diabetes which can lead to nerve damage. So where did we go next? Answer : An electromyography (EMG)(nerve conduction study). Electromyography is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons). EMG results can reveal nerve dysfunction, muscle dysfunction or problems with nerveto-muscle signal transmission. As a result of this testing by a specialist, the client was diagnosed as having a Lumbosacral plexopathy. In this case it seemed that the nerve had been damaged by a viral or bacterial infection. More tests need to be done to confirm and treat this infection. The lumbosacral plexus represents the nerve supply to the lower back, pelvis and legs. Lumbosacral plexopathy is characterized as inflammation and or damage to the nerve bundles in the area of the lumbar and sacral vertebrae regions. Symptoms may include shooting or
burning pain, numbness, and decreased movement in the thigh, buttock and/or leg area. It is an uncommon idiopathic disorder(relates to or denotes any disease or condition which arises spontaneously or for which the cause is unknown). It is characterized by the acute onset of severe lower extremity pain followed by wasting and weakness of leg muscles along with variable sensory loss. To Summarise : Lower Lumbosacral Plexopathy It predominantly affect the L4–S3 nerve fibers. There patient complains of a deep boring pain in the pelvis that can radiate posteriorly into the thigh and down into the posterior and lateral calf. The ankle reflex may be depressed or absent. Sensory symptoms and signs may be severely deminished over the posterior thigh and posterior-lateral calf and in the foot. Other Causes of Lumbosacral Plexopathy Structural Retroperitoneal hemorrhage (anticoagulation, hemophilia) Pelvic or abdominal tumor
Postpartum [during childbirth] Diabetes (diabetic amyotrophy – most common non-structural cause) Radiation Postsurgical (retractor injury) Please note that the presentation of Lumbosacral Plexopathy has subtle differences to sciatica and discogenic pain, the later conditions being much more common than Lumbosacral Plexopathy.

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor WEDDING On Saturday 18th August, Christina O'Shea, Killelton, Camp married Tadgh Scanlon, Cappaclough, Camp at St. Mary's Church Camp. Afterwards a wonderful wedding reception was enjoyed by over 200 guests at The Ballyroe Hotel, Tralee. A teacher at our local Aughacasla National School, Christina is much loved and very popular with all her young pupils who along with the entire community wish Christina and Tadgh a long and happy life together and many blessings. THANK YOU Kilgobbin Parish fundraiser held on August 6th at the Old School Camp raised €1,585 towards essentails repairs to Kilgobbin and Killiney Churches. The orgainsers would like to thank all who generously donateed to the stalls and gave of their time and support. Also a big thank you to all who came and made the day so successful. It was a happy day with wonderful fellowship. OBITUARY Ned O'Shea Crowhill, Annascaul and The Merchant and O'Shea's Hotel, Dublin passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August last. Ned was a true legend in his own lifetime, a loyal and proud Kerryman and Annascaul man. The Merchant was and still is the headquarters for all Kerry people in Dublin up for All Irelands or indeed for any other occasions. Kerryman of the Year, Chairman and President of The Kerryman's Assoiciation, Dublin, he even played music for Bill Clinton, former Presdident of America in the Whitehouse, Ned took it all in his stride and when a neighbour or musician from West Kerry came into the Merchant, the salutation from Ned was “ have you a bed for the night” He was a humble man who never forgot his roots. Ned surely epitomised the quote from the poem of Rudyard Kipling. He did indeed “walk with kings and not lose the common touch “ Ned will be sadly missed by everybody who knew him. Sympathy is extended to his sons and daughters John, Pat and Cathal, Geraldine, Noranne and Teresa, His siter Nora, grand children, great grand children, sons in law, daughters in law, extended family and friends. Neds wife Mary predeceased him. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis ! ANNASCAUL GAA NIGHT AT THE DOGS: Annascaul GAA will be holding a fundraising Night at the Dogs at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Saturday 8th September. Tickets, priced at €10, include entry to the rack track on the night and a race programme, and can now be purchased from players and committee members. As well as being a fun 42 West Kerry Live
night out, this is an important fundraising event for our club development plans and we look forward to as much support as possible. Paddys Picnic Paddy O'Brien was always fundraising for cancer research and other charities and on September 8th at Camp Junction "Paddy's Picnic", a day long fundraiser is being organised by Paddy's family and friends in aid of the Kerry Palative Care Unit, at University Hospital Kerry, where Paddy spent the last few weeks of his life in the wonderful care of the Nursing staff at the Unit. The family fun starts at 3.00 and up to 6.00 p.m. There will be fun activities for Kiddies, face Painting, Clowns and more. Camp Kittens, Dingle Berries and Special guests will entertain from 7.30 p.m. - 9.30, followed by some great craic with comedian Joe Rooney, Pat McDonnell and a Fr. Ted Tribute, the evening will conclude with Katsquire until Late. BBQ and raffles too. Tickets €10. Donations will be gratefully accepted if you are unable to attend. THE FESTIVAL The Festival of Kerry is always one of the greatest closing events of the summer in Tralee and around the county of Kerry too. And the fun and great atmosphere of the occasion has always spilled out to us in Camp too. And last week when the Roses came to lunch at Ashe's Bar and Restaurant, there was none more delighted and excited than the local children whose admiration for the lovely Roses was palpable. Afterwards they headed down to Sandy Feet Pet Farm and onto the Maharees for a Jaunt with Denny Cronin. And the parish had a Rose Escort too, Daniel O'Connell from Inch was an escort to 2 of the roses over the week in Tralee. And Ocean View Nursing Home had their own party with music and dance and staff donning Rose sashes and the residents loved it.
TABLE QUIZ On Friday, 14th September a Table Quiz will be held in Ashes for Camp Fair which is round the corner ! Everybody welcome. Proceeds towards trophies and prizes for the fair. CAMP FAIR Camp Sheep Fair is falling on Tuesday 18th September. Sheep Show, Adult and Childrens Fancy Dress and Face Painting. Pet Show and Sheep Show and sheep for sale. Mutton pies and music and craic in the pubs. All perpetual trophies and cups for the sheep show to be returned to Ashes Bar Camp before the Fair please.

Chuaigh cúpla gasra ón gceantar go Cnoc Mhuire le fáilte a chur roimhis an bPápa Proinsias. Bhí an aimsir fliuch ach níorbh aon nath ag a bhformhór an anaithe. Is dócha gur ardú croí dóibh siúd a bhí abalta láimh a chroitheadh leis an bPápa nó a bheith i láthair. Gan amhras b’í an náire a bhain leis an ócáid an oiread cás ina raibh leanaí maislithe go deo ag éigean gnéis ag baill don Eaglais. Gan dabht ní hiad san amháin atá cionntach as ionsaithe gnéis ar leanaí. Gnímh trom chúiseacha iad seo go léir, ach is measa go mór droch iompar baill don Eaglais. Is baolach go bhfuil an- dhiomáiste déanta ag na hionsaithe gnéis, ní nach ionadh. Saol eile atá againn inniu. Conas ná cuireann na daoine go ndeintear ionsaithe mar seo in úil dos na húdaráis san Eaglais agus go deimhin na Gardaí. Measaim go bhféadfadh cor mór in aghaidh an choim, dá gcuirtí ar a súile dos na Gardaí na hionsaithe agus go gcuirfí deire leis an scanall seo. Tá Oileán agus na n-ollamh scriosta le fada an lá. Príosún mar deirim ceann dos na leigheanna. Tá daoine eile ag féachaint anonn dtí Sasana agus iad ag iarraidh a bheith bonn ar bhonn leo. Bhí sé ráite riamh linn, fanacht glan do neamh -Chríostaíocht na Sasanach. Déarfadh daoine go bhfuilimíd chomh bog lofa leis na Shasanaigh. N’fheadar fé sin. Is í droch iompar baill don gcléir an fhadhb is mó a bhí agus atá. Thárlódh go mbeadh a ndúirt an Pápa mar thús le droch iompar a chosc, ach tá an díobháil dearg déanta ar fuaid na Cruinne fé bhrat na Críostaíochta Romhánach. Mar thús, an Chléir agus an Gárdaí Síochána a bheith san airdeall. Dualgas Rud eile, conas ná cuirtear iachall ar na fearaibh a fhágann a gcuid ban agus leanaí cabhrú leo. Má tá leanai acu tugaidis aire dhoibh seachas an t-ualach ar fad a chur ar an mháthair.

Special thanks to Austin Stacks for organising and hosting it and to the trainers for all their work with the boys and girls. It was also lovely to see so many parents there supporting their children. Milltown Castlemaine Juniors: Well done to the Milltown/Castlemaine Junior side (kindly sponsored by Kelly’s Londis, Topshop and Larkins Bar and Restaurant) who travelled to Brosna on Friday evening last in the Barrett Cup and returned home with a very good victory in the end at 1-13 to 0-8. Milltown/Castlemaine Panel was as follows: (No Particular Order, 16 players) Jonathan O'Sullivan, Derek Twiss, Adam Scanlon, Linus Burke, Damian Murphy, Nigel Wren, Dara O'Connor, Killian Kerins, Padraig O'Reilly, Linus Og Burke, Cathal O'Connor, Sean O'Dea, Patrick O'Connor, Colin McKenna, Thady O'Sullivan & Aaron O'Brien We led by a solitary point at 0-7 to 0-6 at half time but a commanding 2nd half display which culminated in some lovely attacking football coupled with tireless defensive work which kept Brosna to only 2 points in the 2nd half. This propelled us into the next round of the Barrett Cup where we will find out our opponents in the days to come. Great effort shown by all the management team, players & supporters in attendance tonight!(By Dara O’ Connor) Senior County Championship: Congratulations to Mid Kerry on a fantastic win over An Ghaeltacht in Round I of the above competition on Saturday evening last. In particular well done to their trainer Paul Carroll, Gary Murphy who was a selector and to our own club players who were part of the panel: David Roche, Gavin Horan, Cormac Leane, Stephen Roche and Ciaran O’ Connor. 44 West Kerry Live

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal
excellence this year was a particular tribute to the skills and attention of JJ Corduff and his team given that while we all loved the amazing weather, it did present problems for the greenkeeping staff – but as always, they responded superbly.
Samhradh 2018 in Retrospect
Many words of praise were voiced also, for the top-notch bar and dining service provided by Dave O’Connor and his team. It was generally acknowledged that the quality of food and service was outstanding and at the prices charged, excellent value for money.
It’s that time of year again when with schools re-opening, many Fáinleoga are returning to their native habitat and it’s a good time to look back at the summer that was. In overall terms, it must be said that it was an excellent Summer for Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal. In early Summer, the weather was spectacularly good, warm sunshine, fast fairways – the golfer’s dream! Both Captains’ Days were huge successes as was the Comórtas Toyota with excellent participation and excellent scoring. Likewise, the other ‘Majors’, the Presidents’ Days, Senior Captains were greatly enjoyed. Visitors playing over the Summer were at record levels and expressed their delight at the golfing experience they enjoyed at Ceann Sibéal. Since our last Notes, we had a very successful Senior’s Charity Competition for the benefit of the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus and while generous donations are still coming in, we expect to present well over €2,000 to that very worthy Charity. Behind the scenes, we must acknowledge the generosity of our Sponsors, led by Toyota Ireland and the many businesses on the Dingle Peninsula and we hope that their benevolence is rewarded by us giving them our business when we can. Many members also provided excellent sponsorship – go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. Mostly behind the scenes, our committees (and sub-committees), led by the Captains, put in many hours of work, without complaint, to ensure things run successfully and as members, we owe them our gratitude for their efforts. The quality of the course attracted great plaudits as it usually does and its
For those who interacted with the Club, whether as a member or visitor, in person or by telephone, they experienced the professionalism and helpfulness of Steve Fahy. As a front man (poster boy?) for Ceann Sibéal, Steve does an amazing job and is a vital part of the reception experienced by visitors and members. Together with Paul, they had a very busy summer but moved serenely through it like a swan on a placid lake (possibly with some furious paddling underneath). Finally, while we look forward to continuing good golf throughout the Autumn and rest of year, our AGM at end of October will mean changes to Committees and we should acknowledge the excellent work carried out to make it all possible. We also have a beginning for the many people who availed of the Get Into Golf programmes to take up the game and are progressing very well – we wish them great enjoyment from one of the world’s greatest sports.

Michael Collins eagrán nua le Mercier Press ‘Many books have been written about Michael Collins, but The Path to Freedom is the only one that records his own words. These articles and speeches, first published in 1922, throw light not only on how Collins viewed the events of the War of Independence, the Civil War and the foundation of the Free State, but also on his ideas and hopes for the future of Ireland and its people.’ Mercier Press ‘A new page of Irish history is beginning. We have a rich and fertile country, a sturdy and intelligent people. With peace, security and union, no one can foresee the limits of greatness and well-being to which our country may not aspire. - Michael Collins, 1922’ An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979
