Welcome

Dear Members,

Our Amenities & Planning Team has been working diligently on combining the feedback they have received at our open forums regarding the amenities enhancement plan. The thoughts gathered will help guide the team toward a final plan that will address Wexford’s needs, wants, and expectations. Once they have been consolidated into one drawing, we will circulate the plans throughout the community.

The search is underway for Wexford’s new Executive Chef. We have received many resumes from promising candidates and are narrowing down the list to find the best fit for our team. We will be starting the preliminary interview process soon before bringing in the top candidates for a market basket-style tasting. We look forward to the next culinary chapter for Wexford. Kudos to our Executive Sous Chefs Jesse Morrill and Anne Marie Romano for their tireless work in leading the kitchen operation during the transition. We have partnered with Aspire Golf Consulting, who completed a comprehensive study of our golf course and are using their recommendations to help guide our actions when it comes to course maintenance. Using this study, we have completed a shortterm action plan to improve course conditions and look forward to sharing

the mid & long-term plans. I expect to have a completed plan in July. We will continue to use these plans to ensure one of the biggest amenities at Wexford is maintained to the highest standards.

As we enjoy all the Wexford amenities with friends and family over the coming summer months, please remember to be respectful of other owners and our very valuable staff. If you have an issue, please address it in a positive way with the other owner involved. In the case of staff, please escalate the issue with the manager on duty.

As always, my door is open and I welcome questions and feedback. Whether you will be spending the summer at Wexford or somewhere else in the nation or the world, I wish each of you a safe and happy season.

Respectfully, Patrick

THE COVER

Hello Neighbors,

Letter from the Board President

Park, the Board is asking the membership to vote for a change that would at least make the concept feasible. If passed, the Committee would then have the ability to create a plan that the owners could vote on at some stage in the future.

I am sitting writing on a rainy Sunday towards the end of May, having had a very enjoyable morning yesterday playing in the men’s short course tournament. Mother Nature has finally cooperated and we have been enjoying our first two weeks of consistently warmer weather. As predicted, the grass is getting greener, stronger and is growing. The dreaded Poa is weakening and the soil conditions are now allowing our dedicated grounds staff to resod and rebuild.

Our new GM, Patrick McGuire, is no longer so new. He recently moved his family into their permanent home and has passed his six-month anniversary. I must commend his boundless enthusiasm and responsive attitude. Whether it be his very early morning emails and texts or his competence in managing all of the diverse departments that comprise the Wexford community organization, he is working tirelessly as our General Manager and doing a very fine job. Amongst his top priorities at the moment are the recruitment of a new Executive Chef. We have received a good number of initial applications and I am hopeful a decision can be made soon.

With the warmer weather arriving, I am pleased to see activity in all of our varied amenities. I am especially glad to see Waves up and running and as ever well attended. Given its popularity, look out for some extension to the hours in the near future.

Our Amenities and Planning Committee has been immersed over much of the last two or three months to the development of a plan to enhance our facilities. The extensive neighborhood listening sessions revealed a strong appetite for the redevelopment of the clubhouse and a more modest rebuild of our Harbor Center. To slightly lesser degrees, support for a Wellness Center, a Dog Park, and various other amenities was identified or verified. Where possible, they will all be included in the strategic road map so that they are preserved and can be addressed in sequence. Since the current language in our covenants does not permit the operation of a Dog

As I look to the next few months, the Board and management are working on several important documents that directly impact membership. First, we are developing our Strategic Vision. This will be a living document that captures important concepts including our vision, mission, and values that our current and future Boards, members and employees can refer to as well as modify as necessary to reflect then current circumstances. We anticipate circulating a draft of this document in the next two months and look forward to your feedback. In addition, we are working on the 2023 Member Survey. We will be launching that a little earlier this year so that we may have results before our annual plan is voted on. Likewise, the employee survey will also be completed approximately 8 weeks earlier than last year.

Finally, I do want to share with you one challenge that we are facing. Despite all of the positive things referenced above, Wexford is not immune from the rather severe changes occurring in the insurance world. As some of you may be aware from dealing with your own private insurers, Wexford is being impacted not only by demands for much higher premiums, but also to accept less comprehensive coverage. Our Finance team and the Finance Committee are diligently working through this. Although they have been able to identify areas of savings, the net result will be that we will have coverage, but at an annualized premium increase in excess of $100k.

I hope that like me, you will agree that we have observed some very constructive and organized progress so far this year. There is much to look forward to, so stay tuned for details of our upcoming 40th Anniversary celebrations, and with your support, our exciting plans to make Wexford an even more enjoyable place to call home for now and long into the future.

Have a great Summer!

Sincerely, Stephen

The Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton

The Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton hosted a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Thursday, May 18th to commend their new Book Vending machine provided by the Wexford Foundation. The event was part of the organization’s literacy celebration where they recognized children for their accomplishments in the Lexia Reading program. Family members attended the special ceremony to celebrate their children’s reading success.

The Book Vending machine complements the organization’s literacy program that helps children develop critical reading skills at their own pace. Staff & families joined together as Mark Brown, grants chair of the Wexford Foundation, cut the ribbon in celebration of its kick-off.

“We absolutely love our Book Vending machine and are so very thankful for the Wexford Foundation grant,” said Tricia Evans, literacy director. “This creates a small library in the classroom and enables children to own a book that truly interests them.”

Every child participating in the reading program received one or more gold coins to select books

from the vending machine to start creating their own personal library. The children’s excitement and joy were experienced by all as award certificates and coins were distributed to celebrate this special day.

For over 25 years the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton has played a critical role in the lives of young people.

— ‘No Wake’ —

What does it really mean?

Perhaps you’ve noticed the No Wake sign on the lock doors entering Wexford Harbor. But what does “no wake” really mean? Starting at the beginning, “wake” refers to the waves that emit from the bow or stern of a boat. Wakes created by boats travel long distances through and across the water and carry a lot of energy. They can and do damage other boats, docks, and floats, as well as erode shorelines. Maritime and Admiralty Laws state that a boat’s Captain is financially responsible for any damage done by a wake generated by the boat he or she is driving.

Does “No Wake” equal “Idle Speed”? NO! Does “No Wake” mean you can go 5 knots, 7 knots, or 10 knots? NO!

Each boat is different. Many boats can make a damaging wake at idle speed, or even at 5 knots. It is the responsibility of the Captain and the person driving the boat to make sure their wake does not cause damage and is not capable of causing damage. If this means taking a boat in and out of gear to ensure it goes slow enough to prevent a damaging wake, then so be it.

USCG, SC DNR, and Beaufort County Sheriffs’ Office are stepping up wake enforcement in Broad Creek. In Wexford Harbour, please be considerate of your friends and neighbor’s boats. As you motor through the Harbour, make sure you look back at your wake and adjust your speed to minimize it. If the Harbour staff calls you on Channel 14 and asks you to slow down, it’s because they can see your wake’s effects. Don’t ignore them, they may be saving you from getting a repair bill for damage you may have done to your neighbor’s property. Remember, under the laws that govern the seas, you are responsible for your wake.

Wexford Junior Sailing program is up and running!

After Wexford purchased 4 Optimist class sailboats (the world-recognized boat for sailing instruction for kids) the Junior Sailing Program has started in Wexford Harbour. Eight Wexford kids are being taught the fundamentals of sailing under the guidance of certified instructors in the safety of our Harbour. Sailing is a tremendous sport that teaches way more than how to sail and handle a boat. It teaches teamwork, selfresponsibility, creative thinking, camaraderie, problemsolving, and leadership.

The current class is full, but additional classes are being scheduled for this summer and fall, so watch the e-blasts for scheduling.

Boat owners needed for August kids’ outing

Once again this year, Wexford is offering a great boating experience for members of the Hilton Head Boys and Girls Club. This is a great opportunity for kids who probably have never been on a boat, or out on the water to see what it’s all about, and it’s a great opportunity for Wexford to contribute to the Hilton Head community!

We are looking for volunteer boat owners to host 3 or 4 kids on their boats for a trip out on Calibogue Sound and down to Harbor Town, then back to Wexford for a great lunch created by our restaurant staff (OK, it’s hot dogs, but kids love ‘em). Generally, the kids get to Wexford mid-morning and load up on assigned boats. They then

Our partnership with America’s Boating Club

The Yacht Club had recently hooked up with America’s Boating Club to provide a series of boating courses exclusively to Wexford Members. After the smashing success of our pilot program (we had 25 Wexford members participate in the Partner in Command course conducted in April), we have decided to offer a continuing program of new courses and do them about every two months. Courses have been developed by America’s Boating Club, and they are part of an overall boating certification program that has been instructing boaters for decades. Courses include piloting, navigation, boat handling, Rules of the Road, safety, maintenance, and a variety of other boating topics. Courses run about 2 hours each and will be scheduled evenings, or perhaps on weekends.

Watch future e-blasts for course content, times, and dates, and take advantage of this great FREE opportunity to benefit yourself!

Planning Ahead: Lock Refurbishment

Every 10 years, the entire lock system requires refurbishment. Planned to start in January 2024 and last about 2 months, the lock will be closed, doors removed and refurbished, and hydraulics serviced including pump motors and lines.

During the refurbishment, passage through the lock will be available. If you think you may use your boat during this period please start making plans now to relocate your boat for when the lock is closed. Nearby marinas are fairly full now, so the earlier you start your search the better. Mark in the Harbour Center may be able to assist you with this, but keep in mind, boating interest is at an all-time high, and slips and docks are somewhat scarce.

The date this year is Wednesday, August 2nd.

Please contact Mark in the Harbour Center to volunteer your time and boat for this great cause. You’ll have as much fun as the kids do!

Wednesday, June 14th | 5:00pm – 7:00pm

When a named storm threatens, you need to be prepared and protect your boat. In this short seminar, you’ll learn how to select a location from which to weather the storm and prepare your boat for a hurricane.

What we will cover:

• Check vessels and gear

• Make plans

• Check your trailer

• Prepare a storm plan

• Lessons learned from storms

• Hurricane anchoring

• Be storm ready

• Your responsibilities

• Post-hurricane efforts of US Coast Guard and law enforcement

• Insurance

This is a seminar that will help you think about how to prepare for and handle not just hurricanes, but all sorts of heavy weather.

The seminar will be taught by a team of local boat owners and instructors from America’s Boating Club. Space is limited, please contact Mark Dryden at mdryden@wexfordhiltonhead.com to reserve your spot.

We will depart Wexford Harbor on Friday, July 29th at approximately 8:00am and cruise up the ICW to Bohicket Marina. We will be docking for two nights and pitchin for a collaborative BBQ dinner the first evening. Once we have assembled a roster for our trip, we can determine who brings what as sides. The marina has BBQ grills, and we will take a combined approach to the protein selection. The second day is open to a variety of activities – golf, beach walk, etc. That evening, we will choose a local restaurant to dine and finish our day. We will make our return to Wexford July 31st, at approximately 9:00am, keeping in mind low tide at our home port is 4:09pm.

Develop a pattern of play you can trust

While having several different patterns of play can ensure you are equipped to handle any opponent, developing one or two trusted plans can keep you focused and hitting your strongest shots every time.

Develop a plan that includes positioning and the shots you hit for the start of EVERY match to keep you focused on hitting the shots you know will work.

TENNIS TRIVIA

Q: How many tennis balls were used in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships?

A: 54,250 tennis balls are used during the tournament. The balls are replaced after every seven to nine games to make sure they’re in perfect shape throughout the match. Those not in use are stored in a refrigerated container to keep them in tip-top condition.

PICKLEBALL TIP

How to move your game to the next level

1. Less Lobbing

I think we have all played games where we have a serial lobber on the court. Can it work? Sure. Will it get you to the next level you are after? No. We must lob sometimes and there are opportunities for good lobs. I am specifically talking about the intentional baseline third shot lobs. What are we doing? You won’t be getting over their head often with these; if it does, it will most likely go out.

2. Drill, Drill, Drill, and Drill

I started playing just to have fun. Do you know what wasn’t fun? Not being able to hit consistent shots and points ending early due to unforced errors. Drilling can be a lot of fun. You are hitting more balls and getting a better workout per hour than playing games. Oh yeah, now you want to drill. If you want added competitiveness keep score with each drill. This always gets my fire going.

3. Pick a Target

How often are you thinking about where you hit the ball? Not just who you are hitting the ball to, but where you are hitting it. Are you thinking about hitting a drive to their backhand? Are you thinking about hitting the third shot in the middle? You won’t automatically start placing the ball exactly where you want, but hitting with intention goes a long way towards getting the ball where you want it to go and helps you strategize.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Play Alone

The first summer I started playing pickleball I could not get enough of it. I was biking and driving to the courts any opportunity I had. The only problem was sometimes I was the only one there. We all know you can practice serving on your own. When you practice your serves set up markers. I used water bottles. See how many balls it takes for you to hit a water bottle deep in the court. Getting your serve deep will help you set up a much easier third shot drop.

Do you smash too many overheads into the net? Do you hit one too many overheads into the fence? Yeah, I was there once too. You can either toss the ball into the air or hit it up with your paddle. This is a perfect opportunity to practice putting the ball away. Vary the heights you toss the ball and try moving around a bit.

Practice returning lobs. For this action, I start at the left side of the NVZ line and toss the ball towards the right side of the baseline (make sure to practice both ways.). You can practice hitting drops and drives as you run

back to return the lob. I don’t see many people practicing sprinting back to return lobs, but it is a key element to the game as more people mix in lobs during a dinking rally (I know I just said stop lobbing, but that was for third shots from the baseline mainly!)

Do you have a wall at the courts or in your basement? Oh yeah, I am talking about wall practice. Get your favorite tape out and tape a line 36” high across your wall (it is 34” in the middle if you want to get super accurate) and 20’ long if you have that much space. Tape an NVZ line 7’ away from the wall. You just created a makeshift pickleball NVZ. You can practice dinking and volleys with this new creation. I have gotten do much faster with my hands from volleying against the wall. It helps you with not only speed but control as you are getting a lot more feedback from all of the repetitions you can

5. Watch the Ball

Have you ever whiffed a ball? Shanked it? Done something else you couldn’t explain? Usually, when something that bad happens it means you were not looking at the ball. Keeping your focus on the ball as you make contact is essential. You will get a lot better if you can see what you are hitting, trust me.

6. Use the Right Grip

How do you hold your paddle? The best grip to start out with is the continental grip (also called the handshake grip. Hold the paddle out with your nondominant hand and shake hands with the paddle. Now you are holding a continental grip. (You can check your form at left.)

7. Get Low

You want to get below the ball and bend your knees. If you are standing straight up your reaction time will be slow getting to a dink and you will be more of a target for speedups. Start practicing getting low and you will see how much easier it is to dink.

BOBBY’S BASICS

Pitching it close

A pitch shot is just a longer version of a chip shot, but it can require hours of practice to master your distance control and judge how the ball will react when it hits the green.

First, we want to pick out a landing spot to focus on to help us lock into the feel of the shot (picture 1).

Second, we want to set it up properly and allow the bounce of the wedge to do some of the work for us (picture 2). So, we will place the ball in the middle or slightly forward in our stance so the club can easily slide through the grass, rather than dig into the ground. In simplest terms, the very bottom (fat part) of your wedge will do a lot of the work when you brush through the grass.

Lastly, keep your leading arm and your wrists stable through the golf shot, which will help with good contact and the proper trajectory when that ball leaves the club face (picture 3). Do some practice from different distances with these tips and it will be much easier to take onto the golf course during your rounds!

Stay prepared for Hurricane Season

We would like to encourage each of you, especially anyone who has never lived in a hurricane area, to review your emergency plan for hurricane season. If you have not prepared a plan, the time is now.

Preparation is our best defense. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security by beautiful weather. Storms can develop quickly offshore and be in our area before we have much time to react.

For help in preparing your family plan, you can get a copy of the Wexford Hurricane Preparation/Evacuation Guidelines from the member website, or review the Town of Hilton Head plan.

Should you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at mmorrison@wexfordhiltonhead.com

SECURING YOUR PROPERTY

Recently, some of the neighboring areas have continued to experience the break-ins of their vehicles and homes. As a reminder, please lock your cars and homes to help in the safeguarding of Wexford.

During investigation, it was found that homes were entered as the result of garage door openers being left inside unsecured vehicles. These are crimes of opportunity that can be prevented by locking up and removing property from plain view — and especially guns from inside your vehicles. Thieves will walk along an area, pulling on door handles, then enter and remove items from an unlocked vehicle.

GOLF CARTS

Operating a golf cart requires the person to be 16 years of age with possession of a valid driver’s license. Any child found in operation will be stopped, and a licensed driver will be requested to take possession of the cart. Occupants must be seated while in compliance with the seating capacity.

Please obey all traffic signage and policies while driving in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic on the roadway. Golf carts cannot be operated on any leisure path along any roadway, except between the driving range and rear practice facility along Wexford Club Drive.

Golf carts without working headlights and tail lights may not be operated within Wexford between sunset and sunrise.
