CREATING A FAUX WOOD FINISH USING GEL STAINS As the cold weather has set in, now is a great time to complete some interior projects. You can create a dramatic faux wood grain finish on virtually any properly prepared surface, giving your room the look and warmth of real wood at a fraction of the cost of installing expensive hardwood. Getting started is a snap, just make sure that you have all your supplies handy!

Supplies Needed:

Base boards with your choice of profile and height 200 grit sandpaper 400 grit super fine sandpaper Board filler – specific to the type of board purchased or reused Flat primer – either white or coloured Gel Stain – Your choice of colour Clean white rags Gloves and any other personal protection equipment needed Stiff and soft natural bristle brush 11/2 inch foam brush, size of foam brush is optional Clear coat varnish.

Step 1 – Preparation Stage

If you are using new baseboards and they are pre-primed, give’em a light sanding with 200 grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. This will allow the gel stain to adhere better to the boards. If you are using reclaimed boards, just make sure that you have repaired any nicks, dents or scrapes on the board using the appropriate type of filler.

Step 2 – Priming Your Boards

Now that everything is repaired and sanded smooth you will want to re-prime the boards as this will add depth and tone for your final results. To enhance your results, you can use a light tone of beige or any other earthy tone as a primer, just remember to always use a flat finish primer.

choose a colour that will tie the room together. Make sure you have lots of clean white rags and gloves for this part of the project. Try to use white rags as coloured rags can sometimes transfer unwanted dye onto your project, drastically changing your final results. Make sure you use gloves to protect your hands as the gel stain is an oil based product and will stain your skin upon contact. With any type of project, always make sure you do practice run on spare material so that you see and feel how to apply the gel stain to your boards as the gel stain itself is quite transparent, almost like a glaze. The application of the gel stain can be done in many different ways using different techniques. Ensure that you are applying the gel stain using a natural bristle brush to the full length of your board to avoid any overlapping or stop marks.

Step 4 – Special Affects Using Different Tools

Once the stain is applied and still wet, you can use various materials to create a replication of “natural wood grains” on your project. You can also use a very stiff brush to achieve that tight grained look that you see in mahogany or fir boards. Using a foam brush will give your boards a wider and thinner grain that you would see in cedar boards. Depending on your preference, you can apply multiple coats of gel stain to create more depth and a darker patina.

Step 5 – Final Faux-tastic Product

Now that you have achieved the look that you want, allow your boards at least 3 days to completely dry and cure. Once the boards are cured, apply oil based clear coat to seal your project. The clear coat is available in many sheen levels. Using a satin finish will give your board a hint of polish but will not draw attention to any imperfections you may have encountered along the way. There are graining tools available that will allow you to create knot holes and other features for intricate board patterns. Just remember there are no rules when it comes to creating the look that you want and that you can use any combination of the above techniques to achieve it.

Once your base coat is dry you may want to give your boards another light sanding using a 400 grit super fine sandpaper. This will allow the gel stain to sink into the surface of your boards.

Step 3 – Applying the Gel Stain

The goal is to use a thin coat of gel stain to achieve the look you want, but too high of a build-up of product will make your final results less desirable. Gel stain comes in many colours and the choice that you make will depend on your existing décor and room features. Be sure to

Local Team is Hoping to Build Resilience in our Children; Free Movie Premiere Scheduled Mission, BC - Science has finally gotten around to proving something that many of us have understood for a long time; stress can be toxic for kids, and the effects can last a lifetime. This is especially important to note here in Mission, after UBC’s “Middle Years” researchers found that our local children experience an unusually high rate of anxiety-related issues. Fortunately, Mission’s Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Local Action Team is doing something to address the problem. “The LAT is a collaboration between Mission’s doctors and other community partners,” explains Nicole Martin, project coordinator for the Mission Division of Family Practice. “Because we have evidence showing that stress is seriously undermining the health of our children and our entire community, we’re working to engage families and support people so that we can improve our resiliency at every level.” What is resiliency? “In a sentence, it’s our ability to cope and bounce back from stress,” says Dan Thiessen, a Mission school counselor. “It’s about the tools and supports we have. It’s also about reducing the amount of stress kids experience.” But Thiessen and the LAT think the best way to explain the concept – and the remarkable science behind it – is by premiering a new documentary entitled “Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope” here in Mission. “It really is an astonishing film,” reports Georgina Mitchell, Substance Prevention and Health Promotion Facilitator with Fraser House, “It received some impressive awards and reviews, and we think that it can be incredibly powerful for our community.” About an hour long, the film demonstrates how researchers at Stanford and Harvard Universities were able to show a link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and chronic health problems, including obesity, anxiety disorders, addiction and serious disease. Resilience effectively demonstrates how “toxic stress” and trauma are major threats to our children’s health, as serious as any physical disease. As the film describes, “the child may not remember, but the body remembers.” “It’s compelling,” adds Thiessen, “But, more importantly, the film describes some achievable things that we can do in our own homes, neighbourhoods, clinics and schools to make a lasting difference. Our aim is to start a discussion that will raise awareness and connect people with the supports they need, and that will strengthen us all for the future.” “The importance of intervention with children, youth and families experiencing toxic stress cannot be understated. Resulting outcomes of no intervention can include depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress. These are also the roots of much substance abuse, challenges maintaining healthy relationships and disconnect from community. These outcomes impact learning and

academic achievement as well as the ability to grow into a healthy and functioning adult and community member” – Kirsten Hargreaves, Manager of Social Development. “We want to fill the Clarke Theatre on January 11,” says Martin, “So we are providing the film, dinner and childminding for free. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. We will also have community resources there for people who are looking for them.” The LAT group wants the movie premiere to be a first step in overall community change. “As medical and community workers, we know this event is a starting point,” says Laura Wilson, an Early Childhood Development Coordinator for MCFD. “Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope” will be presented Wednesday, January 11, 2017 (5-8 pm – Clarke Theatre) as part of an evening event that will include dinner, child-minding and panel discussions. The event is presented by the Mission Local Action Team as part of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) Collaborative, funded in partnership by Doctors of BC and the BC Government. The area is transforming and as the District looks to invest, so are the businesses. The streetscape announcement has already led to an increase in investment inquiries and the downtown façade improvement program has seen the home of Decode Escape Room, The Friendship Centre and Powerhouse Apartments receiving funding this year and The Gold Bin and Swing Optical are set to complete their upgrades before the end of 2016. A recommendation will be presented to council to extend the program for 3 additional years.

The last word goes to Councillor Carol Hamilton. “Council wanted to send a message that we are serious about the success of downtown”, she says. “And that message has already been received. There is huge and growing developer interest. We have good business people downtown, and we will support them. They deserve a thriving and successful community”.

(Community Support and Enforcement Team, Mission RCMP) When you think about superheroes, what comes to mind? Images of flying men in capes fighting villains or gadgets and fancy cars? Police officers may not be top of your mind when it comes to thinking about community heroes but there are two in Mission who live and breathe the values and actions it takes to be a hero both in and out of uniform. What does your job consist of day to day? Anything and everything! Face to face contact with many diverse people, foot patrols, dropping in at the Mission Youth House, liaison with local businesses and the social assistance office, the day is based on the needs that arise with the goal of breaking down barriers of mistrust and building relationships. We interface with the homeless, those struggling with mental health and help

with housing, connecting to community supports and advocacy at court. What do you like best about your role? The number of barriers we have broken down and the life changing impact for people, it is very rewarding. People are so appreciative of our help; we are making connections that save lives. We are able to leverage our position to beneﬁt those that nobody else cares about and catch people when they are falling. It makes a critical difference that youth know our names and can call us or approach us day or night when feeling vulnerable or unsafe. What do you want people to know about those that are homeless and struggling? The majority have horribly traumatic backstories that have landed them where they are and we have never met

anyone who “chose” to live on the street or “chose” to be addicted to drugs. These people are quite humbling and care more about each other than many community members care. We consistently see that the people who have nothing give more and are always looking out for each other.

mighty big challenges to work on. We need those that possess hope, vision, idealism and inspiration. In 2017, make a conscious decision to contribute to community resilience and join a growing network of people in Mission doing amazing things. Forget chicken soup, community work is good for the soul!

Mission is bursting with them, these community crusaders who wake up every day to work tirelessly with those that for many of us are simply easier to ignore or pretend not to see. Real heroes don’t wait for change, they understand that change starts with us, its starts right now; all of us are capable of achieving super human things. You don’t need to be a mutant, a millionaire, wear a fancy costume or have a special power.

Eat adequate high carbohydrate meals every day to keep glycogen stores full and make the most of your training sessions.

MISSION HOSPICE SOCIETY MISSION HOSPICE SOCIETY

The Mission Hospice Society was founded in 1985 as a non-profit Society by Lillian Dudfield to provide compassionate care and support to the dying and the bereaved. Hospice emphasizes “care not cure ” for the terminally ill and the provision of social, emotional and spiritual comfort for the patient, family and friends throughout the final stage of illness, at the time of death, and during bereavement. The programs and services of the Mission Hospice Society are free. We have Bereavement support services such as our One on One with our Bereavement Coordinator. We also have a widows support group, children and teens support group and grief support. We also host Compassionate Friends that are a support group for Bereaved parents. THE PALLIATIVE CARE TEAM The Mission Hospice Society is part of the Palliative Care Team at Mission Memorial Hospital. This group cares for patients diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses. The patient and the family can access whatever support they need from members of this team. Team members include physicians, home care nurses, a social worker, physiotherapist,

occupational therapist, pharmacist and the Hospice Coordinator of Volunteers. Our volunteer support services are also in The New Residence of Mission (TRIM). We provide support to patients who are suffering grief and loss. THE CHRISTINE MORRISON HOSPICE The Mission Hospice Society, in partnership with Fraser Health, provides programs; services and all patient care comfort needs in the Christine Morrison Hospice on the third floor of Mission Memorial Hospital. The Mission Hospice Society in conjunction with the Christine Morrison Hospice understand that this can be a difficult time in the lives of families and patients. Together we strive to facilitate and create a wonderful and loving experience for all who pass through here and your support allows us to continue this work. The comfort measures include but are not limited to the following: • Food and snacks in the pantry • Beverages • General Maintenance • Toiletries • Laundry services • Entertainment

Respectful, compassionate and accepting.

Attemd a mandatory two hour training session.

Allow communities to track changes in homelessness. Raise public awareness about homelessness.

Comfortable with one on one conversation.

Record participantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responses to a short anonymous survey.

May have worked with or befriended people who are homeless.

Involve walking around the neighbourhood.

19 years of age or older.

Shifts will range from 2 to 5 hours in pairs.
