MAYOR’S CORNER Happy New Year Port Coquitlam! I would like to thank Port Coquitlam residents for giving me the tremendous honour of serving as your next Mayor. I look forward to serving our community for the next four years with my fellow Council Members – Councillors Laura Dupont, Glenn Pollock, Darrell Penner, Steve Darling, Dean Washington and Nancy McCurrach. We are each passionate about our city and dedicated to making Port Coquitlam a better place for everyone. I want to thank our outgoing Mayor Greg Moore and former Councillor Mike Forrest for their years of VLJQLÀ FDQW VHUYLFH WR RXU FRPPXQLW\ DQG WKH OHJDF\ they’ve created. I also want to give a heartfelt thanks to my family for always supporting me. We live in an amazing city – in fact – the best in the province. And we owe a debt of gratitude to our seniors and all of those who have played a part in the tremendous work that is required to build a community that you can be proud of. Nothing is more important to me than ensuring that &RXQFLO·V ZRUN DQG SULRULWLHV DUH UHÁ HFWLYH RI ZKDW our residents’ priorities are. We work for you. It really is that simple to me. That’s why I’m very proud to announce the creation of a Mayor’s Citizen Advisory Roundtable so that there is a direct link between City Hall and the people we work for.

We have a lot of exciting work to do over the next four years and you’ll hear more about that. Top among those responsibilities is the delivery of our new 205,000 sq. foot community recreation centre which will bring much needed services to our growing community and will be a catalyst to positive transformation in our downtown. We’ve also heard clearly from the community that our city needs to get the basics right. We need lines that are painted, roads that are repaired, sidewalks and crossings and lighting that make sense and enhance safety, as well as parks & playgrounds that are places for families to connect and a city that is clean and inviting. As Mayor, my goal is to continue to make Port Coquitlam a place where people of regular means can provide a better life for their family. That’s our opportunity and in the next four years - my commitment to you is that we will seize it and do this together. Let’s get started!

2019

This year the Polonez Tri-City Polish Association of British Columbia celebrates its 30th anniversary. In 1987, Mrs.Bozena Lukomska-Khan appealed to the Polish inhabitants of Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody to participate and help organize “Polish Day, which would be a part of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Port Coquitlam. The very preparation of “Polish Day and the participation of the Polish community in the Diamond Jubilee were the inspiration for the formation of the “Polonez TriCity organization.

Galleria in Port Moody. This exhibition showcases beautiful artwork created by talented artists from B.C. While all the artists are of Polish heritage, they have fostered their talents within the splendor of Canada. Our last exhibition featured 26 artists and one group of artists painting together. NEW YEARS GOALS FOR YOUR

l a n r u o J Bullet It’s that time of year again! Time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and start preparing for the new year. This time can be a smorgasbord of a ton of different emotions. It can be exciting, stressful, overwhelming and fun all at once. Here are a few ideas for how you can channel all the excitement of the new year into your bullet journaling. #1: Start the year off with peak productivity. Take a few moments to look through your past layouts of your bullet journal (or day planners if you haven’t started yet) and jot down what is effective for you, and what isn’t. Cut down on anything you’re spending time on that you feel isn’t of value anymore,

and this will help streamline the process of making your layouts. #2: Stay on track with your New Year’s resolution. If you are a part of the majority of people who fall off the wagon with their resolutions, use your journal to stay motivated. There are a couple ways to include a goal tracker into your journal. You can make a spread at the beginning to outline your goals and devise a timeline. Add in motivational pictures, or SKUDVHV VR \RX FDQ DOZD\V Á LS here for motivation or get a little push to keep going when you update your actual progress on your timeline. If you need a more constant reminder, you can make small trackers on your spreads WKURXJKRXW DQG À OO WKHP LQ RQ D regular basis. This way you are always reminded to stay on track and keep with it.

#3: Organize your thoughts to destress: The new year can be a lot to take in. If you are feeling overwhelmed with getting back into the swing of your schedule after the holidays (or maybe adjusting to some changes) you can use your bullet journal to keep the clutter of your worries all in one place. Write down task lists for things you need to accomplish, consolidate bill payments, budgets, or debt trackers all on one spread, make a visual base schedule spread for quick reference when needed. Having an organized journal is a great step towards feeling more structure and organization in your life. The new year is a great symbolic opportunity to accomplish your goals. With these tips, and your journal, anything is possible!

Where to Send Your Used Books:

A HANDY GUIDE Metro Vancouver has a thorough network of used bookstores, thrift stores, and Little Libraries we can bring our books to for rereading. As the only used bookstore in the TriCities, Western Sky Books is uniquely placed to help customers and neighbours navigate that system.

A NOTE ABOUT CONDITION We all have well-read, coffee stained, water damaged, torn, marked and draw in books. As a rule, please don’t give these books to thrift stores or used bookstores. Instead, sort them for pulping. In Port Coquitlam, bring them to Happy Stan's. They send books to Cascades, a Canadian paper recycler and manufacturer. Remember your 3-Rs? Aside from ‘rereading,’ we can ‘repurpose’ books too. Books in bad condition are fabulous material for art creation and craft projects. Now you've sorted your books. What's next?

FIRST UP: RECYCLING IS WORK We spend a lot of time sorting. Recycling is complicated and requires us to pay attention to details. Sometimes, we just want to get stuff out, so we put everything in a box, load up the SUV, bring it to the nearest thrift store. The thing is, this passes Ì i Ü À Ì «À wÌ Û Õ ÌiiÀÃ À «> ` ÃÌ>vv > ` undermines the fundraising potential of donating your stuff to charity. Something most of us don't know: books are not, as a rule, recyclable. Books placed in blue boxes eventually go to the dump. We can remove covers, spiral bindings and staples, and cut the glued spine, put all that in the garbage, then put the loose pages in the blue bin. But realistically, most of us won’t do this. Sometimes we will, but most times we won't. Metro Vancouver Recycles recommends Discover Books. There are many blue book bins in the Lower Mainland. Discover Books processes books in New Westminster. It is an American company, but is an important part of the local book rereading and recycling system.

WHERE TO BRING YOUR GENTLY USED BOOKS FOR REREADING Used Bookstore: Western Sky Books A Little Library: Little Libraries keep books circulating right in our own neighbourhood. Port Coquitlam has several new Little Libraries, a special project of Avenues of Change - Coquitlam River and West Coast Family Centres. Local charities: • Trinity United Church Thrift Store • Eagle Ridge Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store • Share Community Services Thrift Store • Crossroads Thrift Store • Raincity Housing and Tri-City Transitions Society also accept small amounts of books for their programs. Libraries: When you donate books to the library, there is no guarantee they end up on the shelves or in a book sale. It also creates work for staff and volunteers. Before you support your local library with a donation of books, check their website for Ì i À ëiV wV ÀiµÕiÃÌð

WHERE TO SELL YOUR USED BOOKS Hemingway Books and The Bookman, wellestablished used bookstores in Abbotsford, offer cash (and credit) for books. If you have a camera and some basic computer skills, sell your books online. Check out price ranges at BookFinder.com • Craigslist • Facebook • AbeBooks.com: used and antiquarian booksellers use AbeBooks, which has a textbook buyback page too. • Amazon, Biblio, and Ebay Downsizing? Maxsold helps local families get some cash value from their belongings. ONE MORE NOTE: Textbooks older than two years old, encyclopedia, reference series (including children's reference,) old magazines, used colouring and activity books, DVD's/VHS tapes/cassette tapes (aside from audio books,) strip cover books: most of the time, place these in the appropriate recycling stream. A longer version of this article is found at www.westernskybooks.com. It includes clickable links to the re-reading and recycling resources named above. And remember, we can pick up your used books from your home, if you can’t get in to the store. Call 604-461-4602 to make an appointment.

Vanilla Panna Cotta with Raspberry Sauce A Pretty Dessert For Valentine’s Day

Preparation time: 1-2 hours

Cooking time: 10-20 minutes

What’s On! TM

Recipe Page

Servings: 4

Ingredients....For the panna cotta 3 gelatine leaves or unflavored vegan jel by Natural Desserts 1 1/8 cup/250ml/9fl oz cows milk or plant based milk 2 1/4 cups/250ml/9fl oz double cream or plant based cream 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out 1/8 cup/25g/1oz sugar

For the sauce 3/4 cups/175g/6oz sugar 3/4 cups/175ml/6fl oz water Splash raspberry, cherry or blackcurrant liqueur 2 3/4 cups/350g/12oz raspberries

And to serve Sprigs of fresh mint and blueberries (optional)

Method To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavy-bottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a strainer to remove the seeds. To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint. Alternative serving method - pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the strainer, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint.

Sarah Giles Interview with

Sarah Giles is a young up and coming actress from WKH &LW\ RI 3RUW &RTXLWODP 6KH KDV KDG UROHV LQ *KRVW Wars and The Actress Diaries, all while in her early teen years. Giles has a passion for acting, and has many series coming in the near future! Check out our interview with her, to learn more about this local talent! 1) How did you get into acting? I was watching my sister perform and told my Mom I wanted to try it out. She made me spend a day on a TV series set doing background work, so I would know the hours involved and the lingo used on set. I had a blast and knew I wanted to be an actress as well! 2) What has been your favourite role so far? My favourite role so far was Abigail from Ghost Wars; she was a very interesting complex Character(s). I loved being two different characters and being possessed, while trying not to let others know what was happening to me. 3) Were there any scenes in Ghost Wars that were scary for you to ďŹ lm? 1R QRQH RI WKH VFHQHV ZHUH VFDU\ WR Ă€ OP LW LV TXLWH GLIIHUHQW Ă€ OPLQJ WR VHHLQJ WKH Ă€ QDO UHVXOWV RQ 7 9 7KH scene where I had two skeletons on me was kind of creepy.

4) Being a young woman who’s working, do you ďŹ nd it difďŹ cult to balance work life and school? ,W FDQ EH GLIĂ€ FXOW DW WLPHV , KDYH WR PDNH VXUH , VWD\ LQ contact with my teachers and gather any homework WKDW KDV EHHQ PLVVHG , DP D TXLFN OHDUQHU VR , Ă€ QG LW easy to catch up. We also have set tutors if we have to work so many days in a row. I still have after school activities, such as gymnastics and Acro dance, I just cannot commit to a competitive league. But I am happiest when I am on set.

5) What draws you into new roles? I love learning new things; each role lets you explore your imagination. My agent Lissa Lloyd sends me scripts and auditions that meet my criteria. I practice them and try to become the Character. 6) Being a part of the PoCo community, what are some of your favourite places to enjoy and relax? Some of my favourite places is the Recreation center where I love going to late skate. I also enjoy Hyde Creek recreational center. I like meeting my friends at Bubble Tea after school. During the summer we spend time down by the creek, there is a great place to swim and swing off the rope. 7) What are you most looking forward to with 2019 just around the corner? I am looking forward to Grade 8 and seeing my family WKLV VXPPHU , DOVR VWDUWHG À OPLQJ DQRWKHU VHULHV DQG am looking forward to all the new adventures on set. 8) What tip do you have for young locals who want to get into acting? I would say to young actors, make sure you can last long hours on set, make sure you really do love acting and keep a positive mind set. Take an acting class to see what is involved. It is really important to have an agent that believes in you. Most of all believe in yourself and follow your dreams. It takes time and SDWLHQFH EHIRUH WKH ULJKW UROH À QGV \RX
