Squish Juicery

Squish Juicery is a locally owned and operated cold-pressed juicery that opened to the Tri-Cities community in December 2018. We offer a wide variety of cold-pressed juices, our own in house made almond mylks, smoothies, smoothie bowls and carry a great variety of other products. What is your favourite thing about what you do? We are passionate about providing an enjoyable juicing experience while focusing on lifestyle balance and creating healthy habits, not restrictions. Our goal is to create products that have a balanced flavour profile so that your juicing journey is not only healthy but also delicious. What are your most popular products? Our juices! We have a few top sellers right now, our juice “The Intern” which is a combination of Apple, Kale, Spinach, Carrot, Lemon & Ginger. Our “The Vacation” which has Pineapple, Apple, Pear, Lemon & Mint in it and our “Homerun” which is Beet, Carrot, Apple, Lemon & Ginger. What is the best-kept secret about your products/services? Our location! We might be a little tough to find the first time but is well worth the trek! We’re located at #180B - 2099 Lougheed Hwy in Port Coquitlam. Enter off Flint St! What do you love about living and working in the Tri-Cities? We live in Port Moody and love being a part of the Tri-Cities community. Jessica has been a resident of the Tri-Cities for over 32 years and Callan has lived in Port Moody for over 20 years. This connection to our community makes us both so proud to not only live here but to have opened our first store here. Tell us about your proudest moment. Our proudest moment would have to be when we opened our doors. It took us 3 years to get here, from our beginning idea to opening our doors. It has been an incredible journey. We would also say the first City of Port Moody Car Free Day that we participated in 3 years ago. We set up our booth with samples to see how receptive the community would be to having a cold-pressed juicery and we were blown away. We had a line up from the moment our booth opened at 12pm right through til 7pm. It was the most magical day! • Prevent infestations: • Dethatch, aerate, overseed and fertilize in the spring. • Keep grass at least 6 cm high and leave clippings on the lawn to act as mulch. • Monitor your lawn: Look for torn-up grass and turned-over sod caused by birds and animals digging for beetle larvae. • Control infestations: Apply nematodes in summer. How can I protect my home when I travel?

Summer Safety

Make your home visible from the street so criminals have nowhere to hide. Create the illusion of occupancy when you’re away by making sure mail is picked up, the yard is maintained and lights are on timers. Get to know your neighbours. MAKING LIFE MORE AFFORDABLE Since 2015, I have worked hard to put more money back in the pockets of hard working families in Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam. Because of the middle class tax cut and the Canada Child Benefit, a typical middle class family of four will receive, on average, about $2000 more this year. Each and every month 12,000 Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam families receive, on average, $500 in tax-free Canada Child Benefits. That’s over $6-million going into to our local economy and supporting local families every month. The Canada Child Benefit helps nine out of ten families, and has lifted 300,000 children out of poverty. That’s Real Change that will positively impact Canada for generations to come. Housing affordability is a top priority for me. The federal government is investing millions of dollars to create, renovate, and provide subsidies to 585 housing units in our community right here in Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam. We are also improving on the quality of life of our seniors. We enhanced the Canada Pension Plan, lowered the age of eligibility for Old Age Security benefits from 67 back to 65, and increased the Guaranteed Income Supplement by nearly $1,000 a year for our most vulnerable seniors, which has lifted over 57,000 seniors out of poverty. I welcome your comments and ideas, please contact my office to set up a meeting!

NEW VIEW SOCIETY

Coming together to raise MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS No matter the definition for mental health that comes to your mind, we are all touched by mental illness, whether it be a family member, a neighbour, a friend, or yourself. So how can we, as members of our community, allies of individuals experiencing mental illness, and supporters of everyone around us, make a difference and allow a sense of acceptance, togetherness, and belonging for everyone? One place that we can start is with New View Society. A non-profit organization that focuses on the growth and recovery of individuals living with mental illness, New View Society’s goals and values focus on supporting one’s right to live, work, learn, and be part of the community. However, not a lot of people know about New View Society, nor that we are just up the road from downtown Port Coquitlam. This year, you can join us in raising mental health awareness by participating in our second annual Jersey Challenge and by attending our BBQ. The Jersey Challenge was started last year by a wonderful individual in the Tri-Cities community, Jimmy Whitlock. Jimmy wanted to create an

initiative for raising awareness around mental wellness through the circulation of bright green jerseys in the community. Keep your eye out for the jerseys next time you’re out and about, and who knows, maybe you’ll be nominated participate in the challenge! Regardless, you can donate at https://ca.gofundme.com/a-newview-of-mental-wellness. This challenge will continue up until July 27th – the cheque will be presented at our annual Family BBQ. Please join us at Lion’s Park from 2pm on Saturday July 27th for our annual BBQ. There you will meet our members, enjoy free food, and play fun games. Both of these events hold a lot of significance to the goals of New View Society, and through getting involved, you can help continue the conversation around mental health! New View Society is focused on promoting the growth and recovery of its members in safe, positive environments of acceptance, wellness, and community. The truth is, these foundations are not just limited to New View, but also to everyone who is touched by mental illness. This is why we want to spread our arms out to more of the community, because our vision is “Community Health through Mental Health”.

By Jennifer Pownall

When the Community Kitchen at St. Catherine’s Anglican Church was started in early 2002, few realized the importance that it would come to hold in Port Coquitlam. Even those at city hall did not initially see the need many had for a hot meal and a welcoming space, but a small number of dedicated parishioners were determined to see the project beyond its first tentative steps. Bernie Poitras was one such volunteer. By the autumn of the inaugural year, it was clear the value of the program outweighed any doubts. And with the passing of two of the founding members, and the renaming of the program for one of them to ‘Paul’s Place Community Kitchen’, Bernie stepped up to take over its operations. For over sixteen years now, he has been in charge of a myriad of duties to ensure everything runs smoothly. Bernie has helped develop a culture of caring and investment

at Paul’s Place. His meticulous attention to timing, food preparation, and cleaning is clear. He is familiar with every aspect of the kitchen and the good work that it does, and if asked he can offer fine details on the precise order in which everything is laid out on the tables and when, or exact specifications regarding soup ingredients and the way the finished product is to be stored for sale at a later date. It seems clear the program has been as important to Bernie as he has been to it. Paul’s Place Community Kitchen has been fortunate in the many partnerships it has forged over the years. Share Food Bank donates things such as buns, pies, and vegetables and they use the space to hand out parcels to families in need. The Tzu Chi Buddhist Charity Group runs the kitchen on the first and fourth Wednesday of every month. Bernie has overseen

many collaborations, including the involvement of Trinity United Church and Soo Sung Presbyterian Church, and he has helped facilitate a number of lasting community relationships, the most important of which is with all of the program’s wonderful volunteers. This year, Bernie Poitras is stepping down as the soup kitchen organizer. For over a decade and a half he has been at the helm of this important community fixture. Certainly, things won’t be the same without Bernie in charge. But because of his example, Paul’s Place will undoubtedly go on serving the needs of Port Coquitlam, one loving spoonful at a time.

Reading for Family Summertime Fun…

Here are some recommendations to get you started. We have thousands of books to choose from. Kids of all ages and family reading:

by Tamara Gorin

In the summer, everyone wants to PLAY, PLAY, PLAY. But it is still really easy to get caught up in either busyness or boredom, and that goes for little kids and big kids alike. While we have lots of social events and planned adventures to pack in on sunny summer days, some unstructured time to explore forests, riversides, beaches, and our own gardens and neighbourhoods is really valuable too. Reading and play go hand in hand: our brains and our bodies are happier for it. Let’s encourage everybody to use their bodies and their imagination! A family outing once a month to gather stacks of used books from Western Sky Books and the local libraries is a great way for everyone to choose their reading material while hanging out together on a slower paced day. And there is no judgement here: ‘adult’ books have a ‘summer’ or ‘beach reads’ category for a reason. There is nothing wrong with a light adventure, a love story, a stack of Archie or Simpsons comics, a spy novel or western, or some scrumptious historical fiction. In space. With vampires. After all, the point is to enjoy ourselves, and each other. Here’s a fun activity: when you finish your book (always return library books to the library!) put a note in it with your first name, the month you read it, and a sentence or two explaining why you liked it. Then leave it behind on a park bench, in a Little Library, at the resort lobby, or even on the bus. You can, of course, also bring your gently used volumes in to Western Sky Books or any used bookstore for credit, which will reduce the cost of your next stack of reading goodies. So Tri-Cities: let’s READ, READ, READ this summer! p.s.: You can order audiobooks through Western Sky Books! Please see the website for details.

Two YA picks:

And our Adult Non-Fiction pick:

Burke and Widgeon: A History, Volume One – Lyle Litzenberger. Lyle and Melissa will sell copies at local markets this summer. You can also find copies at Western Sky Books in store and online. Canada Reads books at Western Sky Books www.westernskybooks.com.

PoCo Dots Activities for Kids By Jennifer Pownall

Canada Day

is just around the corner and with it comes the chance to explore some of its symbols. Collect a number of red and white items in a large, shallow bin – things like toy cars, a plastic Slinky, cookie cutters, pieces of ribbon, clothes pegs, bottle caps, or even confetti. Add in other items that are associated with Canada such as loonies or toonies, a flag, a toy moose or beaver, an empty maple syrup container, a miniature inuksuk, a mitten, maple leaves, or a small hockey stick. Set the bin out for sensory exploration as it is, or add water or dry rice for an extra element of play. Just be sure to leave out the poutine!

On July 30th, celebrate

World Friendship Day

August is

by gathering your friends to participate in this silly, yet sensational activity... explode a watermelon! Start by laying down a clean tarp outside and placing a watermelon at the center. Remember safety is key, so an adult should be supervising the entire time. Hand out safety glasses to each participant and have 500-600 standard elastic bands at the ready. Take turns, or work collaboratively, to stretch the elastics, one at a time, around the horizontal middle of the melon. It will take a while, but eventually the pressure from the bands will split the fruit in half in a most spectacular way. Bonus: somewhere amid the sticky bits of watermelon you will find the explosion caused the rubber bands to come together to form one large ball. Don’t forget to eat up your mess!

24

National Blueberry month

and that means delicious fun! Get the clan together and make an adventure out of visiting a berry farm and picking to your hearts’ content. After you have that sweet fruit secured, head to the kitchen to create something with it. Find recipes for muffins, scones, or a pie and bake as a family. Experiment with drying the berries whole or as fruit leather in the oven or with a dehydrator. Or make your own ice cream by combining 1 cup of half and half, 2 Tb sugar, and 1/2 tsp vanilla in a sandwich-sized, resealable plastic bag. Place the entire unit into a 1 gallon, resealable bag containing 4 cups of ice and 1/3 cup of rock salt, seal everything well, and take turns shaking it for a total of approximately five minutes. Top your homemade ice cream with those blue gems for a berry tasty treat!

EAGLE RIDGE AUXILIARY THRIFT SHOP

THE

is located in the heart of Port Coquitlam, on Shaughnessy Street. The store has been around for almost six years and was started by a group of ladies who thought opening a thrift shop would be a good way to generate money for the Eagle Ridge Auxiliary, which has been raising funds for the hospital for over 43 years. The store is run entirely by volunteers from the area and collects all their items by donation from local citizens. It specializes in gently-loved clothes, movies, and home décor fitting all kinds of styles, and it allows old items to be recycled for a new use. Since its inception, the thrift shop has been able to raise over ONE MILLION DOLLARS to allow the Eagle Ridge Hospital to buy more equipment, thereby helping many people in the Tri Cities. This small store aims to continue building its impact by offering a community space for people to repurpose items and be involved in positive change!

Summer Artist-in-Residence | Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo Residency Term: June 3 - August 31, 2019 Using drawing as a vehicle for storytelling, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo’s ongoing body of work is a constant revision of historical, cultural and personal experience. Osvaldo is concerned with issues of collective memory, historical trauma and transnational identity within a global context, explored through the possibilities of narrative. His art practice is an intuitive construction of memory as a form of personal myth-making that casts political expressions, voices modes of resistance, and most recently speaks to a process of reconstruction and reconciliation. COMMUNITY ART EXHIBITIONS The Michael Wright Art Gallery (MWAG), and Outlet Gallery at Leigh Square feature a rotating program of exhibitions by local and regional artists. Operating as a gallery and community art hub, the exhibitions advance knowledge, appreciation and understanding of the visual arts by integrating art into community life and contributing significantly to the cultural landscape of Port Coquitlam. Visit portcoquitlam.ca/ leighsquare for more information on current and upcoming exhibitions. Outlet Gallery Imaginings II: A Collection of Port Coquitlam Student Artwork | Terry Fox, Riverside, and CABE Secondary Schools May 1 – July 30, 2019 Ideas and possibilities are the result of imagination. The mental work of the imagination is fundamental to creating, making, and learning. This act elevates thoughts from the mundane to the fantastic. The Imaginings Exhibition highlights the breadth, depth and possibilities of ideas made by local students of Terry Fox Secondary, Riverside Secondary, and CABE Secondary schools

Collaborative Alchemy by Phyllis Schwartz, Edward Peck, and Pierre Leichner August 1 - October 28, 2019 Phyllis Schwartz, Pierre Leichner and Edward Peck are artists whose practice contemplates the full cycle of natural growth and transitions that are in an ever-changing state. They use plant-based materials to create works of art that speak to issues of permanence and impermanence. They are choreographers and arrangers who have manipulated natural materials into compositions that challenge the viewer to contemplate time, form, and the ephemeral. Michael Wright Art Gallery Imaginings II: A Collection of Port Coquitlam Student Artwork | Terry Fox, Riverside, and CABE Secondary Schools May 1 – July 30, 2019 Ideas and possibilities are the result of imagination. The mental work of the imagination is fundamental to creating, making, and learning. This act elevates thoughts from the mundane to the fantastic. The Imaginings Exhibition highlights the breadth, depth and possibilities of ideas made by local students of Terry Fox Secondary, Riverside Secondary, and CABE Secondary schools String Theory by Pepe Hidalgo August 1 - October 28, 2019 Spanish painter Pepe Hidalgo shares his surreal series of works that question the mechanics of reality, creating a world of dreamlike possibilities. For the past 17 years, Pepe has made paintings with dots, points, and bubbles. Little by little his work has evolved into distorted, disproportionate forms, but he is always trying to respect the rules of harmony, volume, color and perspective. Pepe’s style is narrative in the figurative and abstract genre. His figurative is not related to realism, it is created from his imagination, and his memory of sensation of reality.
