HONOURING OUR COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS In September I honoured seven Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam Community Champions. I started Community Champions to recognize community volunteers who work hard to make Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam the best community in Canada. Community Champions are our unsung heroes – like the parent who wakes up extra early to carpool the neighbourhood kids to school, the passionate coach who helps young athletes find their stride, and the fundraising superstar who collects donations to help the less fortunate. This year’s recipients are Lawrence Schmidt, Patrick McCarthy, Barbara Worwood, Aynsley Meldrum, Maria Shylov, Laud Vidal, and Michael Thomas.

4 Tips to Start

g n i l a n r u o J t e l l Bu

by Kayla Fischler

Bullet journaling can be super fun and a fantastic addition to your organization regime. However, like most new things, the change can be scary or intimidating. If you are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of where to start, don’t be discouraged! Here are my top tips to get you through the hard part, and to help you start your bullet journaling journey: Make a plan of what is important for you to have in your layouts. I do this by jotting down a list of things that I value having in my journal and some key aspects of them on some scrap paper. Before I plan my QH[W PRQWK , UHà HFW RQ ZKDW worked from the list, what I want to take out and then adjust the planning list for the next month accordingly.

and allows enough space for \RX WR À OO LQ ZKDW \RX QHHG Consistency in style is the best way to keep things from looking cluttered and messy. Decorate with a few colours, or small drawings, and you have a clean yet functional minimalistic layout. As you get more FRQÀ GHQW VWDUW DGGLQJ LQ PRUH creative details until you get to the place you’d like to be.

Always test your pens À UVW 1RWKLQJ LV ZRUVH WKDQ À QGLQJ out that black gel pen you thought would be perfect bleeds through and smudges all over your paper. Leave a couple of scrap sheets of paper in the back of your book just for testing out pens. Create a catalogue of pens that work best by listing brand, pen name and colour.

Embrace mistakes! Don’t hastily rip out a page when you make a mistake. Try to think of ways to incorporate it into your OD\RXW RU À [ LW FUHDWLYHO\ )RU small mistakes in line work, my go-to is turning the mistake into a fun doodle or embellishment on the page. Regarding big mistakes on the page, try using some washi tape or putting a photo on top to cover it. If you really don’t like your entire layout on a page, you can cover it with craft paper as a cool background or glue the page to the one behind it and start fresh.

Keep it simple! There is no pressure to do elaborate layouts right off the bat. Find a good grid spacing that works for you

Members of Art Focus Artists' Association are creating a 46-foot mural to embellish and bring cheer to the Tri-Cities Community Dialysis Center (RCH) in Coquitlam. The otherwise drab and empty walls will be transformed with a bright and cheerful landscape of mountains, cherry trees, owers, animals, birds etc. The project leader, Nickey Bayne, has tirelessly organized and planned this enormous work. She and fellow artists have worked on it from early May and throughout the summer. The mural will be installed at the clinic this fall. ART FOCUS ARTISTS' ASSOCIATION is pleased to host a Demo by professional artist Eileen Harder on November 28th , 7-9 pm, at The Outlet, in the Leigh Square Arts Village, downtown Port Coquitlam. Art Focus Demos are free and all members of the public are welcome.

Delightful Children’s Books are Perfect for Gift Giving and Holiday Season Reading reviews written by Jennifer Pownall Where is Baby’s Dreidel? is a sweet, lift-the-flap board book just right for introducing infants and toddlers to Hanukkah. Karen Katz has written a simple, yet distinctive, holiday story that sends Baby on a journey to find a cherished toy. As the search goes on, other icons of the Festival of Lights are discovered, giving caregivers a perfect opportunity to expand the narrative about this important celebration. Bright colours and patterns are cleverly used in the illustrations, and the sturdy flaps ensure exploration and enjoyment are tucked into every page. Curious minds will want to hold onto this book for all eight days. Portable North Pole’s Christmas countdown book, Twenty-four Sleeps Until Santa, is a beautifully deigned, quirky read, certain to resonate with kids. With a unique page designed to allow its owner to record their personal information and attach a special photograph, this book will double as a precious keepsake. The playful text and creative pictures are woven together as children are asked to find Santa’s lost keys on each page. Stardust-catching elves and lichen-eating reindeer are just a couple of the creative elements readers will delight in each day,

as they discover a little more about the magic of the North Pole.

The “My First Holiday” series by Karen Katz is a superb collection of stories that investigates the traditions and histories of several celebrations, including Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. These books serve as a beautiful gateway into culture for young readers. The respectful explanations of customs and thoughtful presentation of spiritual practices make these picture books a treasure trove of information and inspiration. With lively art that captures the spirit of each holiday, children will especially be drawn to the beautiful traditional garments depicted in each story. Likewise, the introduction of words and phrases in other languages will intrigue kids, leaving them with a desire to experience and learn more about different backgrounds. Food, art, music, prayer, gifts, and heritage are all explored in these texts in a way that is accessible and memorable. From the importance of certain colours to the symbolism of flowers, from gift-giving to feastmaking, from sacred texts to connection with the lunar cycle, there is a piece of what brings people together on every page.

Introducing TriCities Moms Group Who has had success with the Three-Day Potty Training routine? I think my toddler is going through a sleep regression phase - Has anyone experienced this before? Can anyone suggest a few good apps for managing family routines? A sample of just a few of the many questions asked by members of the TriCities Moms Group. Affectionately known by local moms as “the TCMG”, the TriCities Moms Group is a network of women raising their children in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody. The group’s main platform resides on Facebook, where members offer support and camaraderie in their daily interactions. Referred to as being “better than Google”, the nearly 8,000 members turn to the group for any number of answers to queries about situations both baby-related and not. The TCMG was founded by Heather Hooton after KHU À UVW GDXJKWHU ZDV ERUQ LQ $V VR PDQ\ QHZ mothers do, she found herself lonely and in need of the support of other moms. Alongside the regular online activity, the team arranges several events throughout the year from small social gatherings at local pubs, to much larger events such as their annual charity golf tournament and Christmas party. The money raised by the group regularly pays for groceries, household items and other necessities for families in need in the TriCities. On a larger scale, the funds raised contribute to annual distribution of Thanksgiving and Christmas hampers as well as gifts and stocking stuffers for the children of hamper recipients. The TCMG continues to rapidly expand and with that comes more awareness of the evident need in the community. With government and corporate donor funding, the group could provide so much more and the team wouldn’t have to turn down families due to funding shortages. Currently, the group’s endeavours are being facilitated out of the homes of the volunteers. With appropriate funding, the group could rent space to collect the donations they often have to turn down of items like furniture, nonperishable food, and baby items. If you would like to contribute to the upcoming hamper collection by way of nonperishable items or monetary donation, or if you would like to connect with the group in a business-related manner please contact lead group organizers Heather Hooton and Stacey Gokool @ tri_citites_moms_group@hotmail.com.
