IMAGINE LASERWORKS

Imagine Laserworks uses Low-Level Laser Light (LLLT) and Bio-Electrical stimulation in the form of laser acupuncture to help people manage health issues such as nicotine addiction, drug and alcohol addiction, weight management, stress, depression, and anxiety, to name a few. It is a drugless, painless, non-invasive, and very effective complimentary therapy. What is your favourite thing about what you do? As a psychological counselor, I am able to use my skills when working with clients. While Imagine Laserworks does not provide formal counseling services, my training and my experience with addictions help me to provide direction and strategies for our clients. What are your most popular products or services? The most requested service is Smoking Cessation. Imagine Laserworks has helped thousands of people all over Canada and internationally quit smoking. Other most often requested treatments are for stress, depression, and anxiety. Many people suffer from these issues today with very little time to relax and recharge. As well, we do many treatments for alcohol and drug addictions for clients who need help managing withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and mood issues. Laser therapy is a very effective method of support during recovery from substance abuse. Tonda Chin, Imagine Laserworks www.imaginelaserworks.com coquitlam@imaginelaserworks.com

WISHING YOU A SAFE, PRODUCTIVE BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON! As a father of two daughters, Sarah and Katherine, I know that back to school is one of the most exciting (and most expensive) times of the year. I also know that raising a family is a big job. That’s why our government indexed the CCB two years ahead of schedule! This means that for the 2018-19 benefit year, the CCB has a maximum annual benefit of $6,496 per child under age 6, and $5,481 per child age 6 through 17 - tax-free. Since our government created the CCB it has:

Bullet journaling is a creative medium used for planning, inspiration, goal setting, and expressing yourself. While most bullet journals emulate a personalized, homemade SODQQHU RQH RI WKH PDQ\ EHQHĂ€ WV RI FKRRVLQJ WR bullet journal is that it can be anything you want it to be. Often times, it seems in pursuit of becoming organized and well managed, creativity is culled.

Mistakes and all, in addition to being an excellent agenda, it’s such a feeling of accomplishment to look back on how your style changed and journaling improves as you look back and continue working on it. You have all the say, so make it whatever you want it to be. Feel free to experiment and change things up; go all out or keep it simplistic, focus on habit tracking and important dates, or use it to keep your goals on track and all your thoughts condensed in the same space. Local Guide Books are Essential Reads for Enjoying and Exploring BC

reviews written by Tamara Gorin

Anyone who spends any amount of time outdoors in British Columbia has probably owned or ‘borrowed’ a copy of David and Mary Macaree’s 103 Hikes in South Western British Columbia, or their companion guide 109 Walks, both of which were in print and updated regularly for over 25 years. We are in for a treat now, as Stephen Hui has written a fabulous update to those books, 105 Hikes In and Around Southwestern BC (Greystone,) and more locally to the Tri-Cities, Lyle Litzenberger recently self-published Burke and Widgeon, A Hiker’s Guide (Pebblestone Publishing.) Both provide much needed updates, including maps, GPS waypoints DQG HOHYDWLRQ SURĆ“ OHV IRU WKH trails. While this information is all very technical, it is necessarily so, and the writers present it in ways which allow for easy learning and understanding, while also satisfying WKH QHHGV RI SURĆ“ FLHQW KLNHUV 6DIHW\ and trail etiquette are highlighted, and particular attention is paid to emergency preparedness. The photography in both books is also fabulous and inspiring. Hui’s 105 Hikes is a BC #1 bestseller and Amazon Top 100 book that includes Indigenous place names and plant

Hikers are encouraged to get out on the trails in all kinds of weather with welcoming prose, stories and very FOHDU LQGLFDWLRQV RI HDVH GLIƓ FXOW\ Hui even points out child friendly trails. So no matter your level of H[SHULHQFH \RX ZLOO Ɠ QG D WUDLO WR welcome and surprise you. Artist and ethnobotanist T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss wrote the forward to 105 Hikes. She encourages hikers to be mindful and grateful for the gifts of abundance our local forests provide. She gently reminds readers this territory is unceded Indigenous land, and fosters a spirit of joint stewardship.

Find out more about 105 Hikes at www.105hikes.com and join a 105 Hikes Challenge, by joining the Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/105hikes/about/. Burke and Widgeon information, including trail updates and information about the Provincial Park, can be found at www.burkeandwidgeon.com. You can purchase both books at Western Sky Books: www.westernskybooks.com.

Litzenberger’s Burke and Widgeon is also a local bestseller. Meticulously researched, this gem of a book is an essential guide for Tri-Cities locals and visitors alike. The map features are particularly helpful to get yourself situated. While the Tri-Cities has a growing population, with new development encroaching on forests, there is still a lot of territory which remains untouched and unspoiled. The overviews and trail descriptions are rich in detail. Litzenberger clearly loves and is dedicated to his subject, and his enthusiasm is catching. After reading Burke, you’re going to want to get out on a trail right away!

Pear Tart Tatin

Pecan Pie - A Classic! Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes

What’s Recipe Page On! TM

Ingredients

FXS J R] H[WUD À QH VXJDU 1/8 cup / 40g / 1 1/3 oz cold butter, chopped 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g / 13 1/4 oz all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve

Method

Preheat oven to 400F / 200C / gas 6. Put a 8 inch / 21cm diameter frying pan with an ovenproof handle (this bit is important!) on a burner over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel coloury. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture.

24

Turn the heat down and cook for 5–10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan. Roll out the pastry to about 1/4 inch / 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 10 inch / 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. Bake the pie in the oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the tart onto the plate. Serve with cream. To advertise e-mail info@whatsonpoco.ca
