Cops for Cancer Inspiration for the Ride Cops for Cancer is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a life changing event that brings Cops and communities together for a very special cause.

These children are the inspiration for Cops for Cancer. Each year, the cops visit Camp Goodtimes, tour the facility and meet the kids who have sparked the cause for the tour. This gives the cops the drive to persevere, put the pedal to the metal and finish two challenging weeks of cycling.

Over a hundred members of law enforcement and emergency services across BC are cycling thousands of kilometers to help kids fight cancer. Proceeds from Cops for Cancer allow the Canadian Cancer Society to invest in pediatric cancer research and caring support programs, like Camp Goodtimes, for children living with cancer and their families.

Watch for the cops riding through Langley on September 22 and Maple Ridge on September 28 and be sure to cheer them on!

Camp Goodtimes, located beside Loon Lake in Maple Ridge, is committed to creating a safe environment where kids with cancer have the freedom and support to enjoy their summer vacation just like any other kid.

Success Spotlight Matthew Toren is an award winning author, serial entrepreneur and local Maple Ridge resident. Along with his brother Adam, he has bought and sold many companies over the past several years. He co-founded YoungEntrepreneur.com in 1999 which has grown to become the largest social networking forum for entrepreneurs in the world. Matthew is co-author of the book: Small Business, Big Vision: “Lessons on How to Dominate Your Market from Self-Made Entrepreneurs Who Did it Right” And also the co-author of the award-winning book: Kidpreneurs - Young Entrepreneurs with BIG Ideas! Matthew and his brother Adam have a very large portfolio of websites and domains including 100WaysToMakeMoney. com, VancouverBC.com, BreakingNews.ca, Blogtrepreneur.com and even a local site: MapleRidgeRestaurants.com – A directory of Maple Ridge Restaurants with star ratings of all the restaurants. You can follow Matthew on twitter.com/ MatthewToren.

We sat down with Matthew and asked him a question:

small business,

What’s on Magazine: What’s the one piece of advice that you would want to make sure that every young person knows when it comes to business? Matthew: There are actually two things. Firstly: follow your passion. If you’re doing what you love, nothing can stand in your way. Secondly: I think what sets successful entrepreneurs apart more than anything else is perseverance. I would want young entrepreneurs to know two things about perseverance: 1, You will have challenges and obstacles. They’re inevitable, they’re part of life, and if you look at them right, they can actually be fun!

Lessons on How to Dominate Your Market from Self-Made Entrepreneurs

Who Did It Right

2, You can overcome any obstacle if you truly want to. You’ve got the power within you to make it through anything and come out better on the other side – if you just persevere and refuse to quit.

Tee Ball Upon signing our daughter Elexus up for T-ball earlier this year never did we imagine that we would end up coaching her team. With very little experience under our belts other than the fact that coach Chris Sterling and his assistant coach Gavin Lovitt played ball as children, we rallied up our ambitions and our skills to create the best season for the kids as we could.

We witnessed the development of batting skills, throwing technique and great team work in all eleven of our team members. It was great to see all the parents out there cheering on their little ones and over all seeing the kids just having a good time.

Our practices consisted of batting, throwing and ball chasing followed by a game against another league team and rounded

A New School Comes to Town The Environmental School Project

Imagine … learning activities that are outdoors, experiential, hands-on and in context. The natural and cultural environments provide the place for learning; the connections to community enhance and broaden learning. The Environmental School Project is a journey through Placebased, Imaginative and Ecological Education. This fall, sixty kindergarten through grade seven students begin the journey. Building on their strengths and talents, they will grow relationships with the natural world, as well as learn the stories, histories and knowledge of Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. They will learn as a community with multi-age families and integrated curriculum. Over the last 3 ½ years, the Project has taken shape through extensive communication to ask what it means to learn

ecologically and strengthen relationships. People are passionate about contextual and experiential learning, are excited about learning possibilities with and in the natural world, and are extremely committed to a flourishing, sustainable community. Imagine … A group of students walking and balancing along a log. They stop to direct each other’s attention to the different patterns and feelings of the mosses. They jump off the log’s end to examine an ancient cedar stump. They ponder its age, while an Elder begins the tree’s story. They have many questions. The “learning journey” begins. Outdoor Club Rides the Rails Six members of the Ridge Meadows Outdoor Club (RMOC) took to their bikes and spent 5 days cycling the Columbia Western Railway trail. This rail line built between Midway and Castlegar by the CPR at the end of the 19th Century is now an unpaved recreational trail. On day 1 we cycled 32 kilometers to the beautiful, heritage city of Greenwood, famous for their amazing well-maintained 1900 era style houses and businesses. Next day, a 41- kilometer trek brought us to the historic Russian city of Grand Forks, where we camped at the city site and dined on cabbage rolls, perogies and borscht.

good condition, and although quite a grunt cycling 35 kilometers on a packed bike on a 2% grade, it was attainable by going at a steady pace and taking breaks. We camped on a at ridge near Bulldog Tunnel. We put on our headlamps and headed for the long (1 kilometer), very dark, watery, Bulldog Tunnel on Day 5. It was all down hill after that to Castlegar, the end of our journey. It was a fascinating 200-kilometer trip through B.C. history, and a physically challenging, but rewarding cycle.

On Day 3 we managed to get into our spandex biking shorts for a short 21-kilometer cycle to the Cascade Gorge on the Kettle River. We camped on top of the gorge with an amazing view of the river carving its way through the canyon down to Christina Lake. We had our work cut out for us on Day 4, a 52-kilometer ride with a 500-metre elevation gain, spread out over 35 kilometers. Thanks to a local biking group in Castlegar, this part of the trail is in very 28
