Bear Aware Has Come To Mission Did you awake to a noise in your backyard last night? Maybe it was the wind or your neighbour’s dog or maybe it was a… bear! Yes, that’s right many Mission residents have recently been learning that a bear in your backyard or on your street has become a common occurrence. It is important for us all to remember that if you live in Mission you live in ‘Bear Country’. So how do we keep bears from visiting us at our doorstep? We reduce bear attractants. For example garbage and rot pots should be put out the morning of collection rather than the night before. Bird feeders should be taken down before they become bear feeders. Pet food should also be stored indoors, barbecues should be cleaned after each 6

use and fruit should be picked often and not be left to rot on the ground. Following these few simple tips will go a long way towards keeping people safe, reducing property damage and keeping bears wild. To find out more about BCCF’s Bear Aware Program you can contact the Mission Bear Aware Community Coordinator at (604) 820-3795 or bearawarecoordinator@mission.ca. To report property damage, human safety issues due to bears or to report a bear sighting, please call the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877952-7277. Mission Bear Aware would like to thank our sponsors the District of Mission and the MOE.

Mission Horse Club Summer Months! It is simply amazing how the horses that had scruffy coats only two months ago now shine like copper pennies. With the vitamin D comes the shows, prizes and a whole new wave for Mission Horse Club. The Gerry Griner Memorial Trophy Show was an amazing event. Even in the rain, everyone came out and pulled off all of their stunts. The rain provided some entertainment. Some of our intermediate riders ended up eating dirt and mud. It was a really fun day for everyone, thanks for the extra help at the shows and the people who just came out and watched fellow club members! Here is the list of our events. Always remember that Mission Horse Club is a family club that cares about everyone. We love new people and if you are willing to try, you might win something. August 27th & 28th Trophy Show September 4th Games Show September 11th English/Western Show (Heritage Qualifier is pending)

A message from our President: Games show in July at M.H.C., we finally had beautiful weather, and I think that’s the first sunny day we’ve had for games this year! Although turnout wasn’t great, those of us that rode had a great time. Well most of us -Genna got bucked off my grey mare Kitty in the first event but did get back on with a little persuasion and rode the rest of the day. I’d like to thank Louie Zanatto for being a good sport and once again BBQing lunch for us all, Tori Seal and her friend for helping out at the concession window, Leslie Cronjaeger for doing the show desk and the announcing, the Gambling family for doing the out gate and ring crew, Tina Pederson for all her help setting up the events. We had 3 new members join our club (sorry I didn’t get everyone’s name) run the in gate, hand out ribbons and help us try to get the timers working although in vain we had to resort to hand timing the whole day and a big thank you to Andrew for doing the hand timing. Cleo

Bella Trix

Cleo is looking for a permanent home. She was originally brought to the FVHS as the family were unable to look after her anymore. Then she was adopted to a great home but that didn’t work out so she came back again. Cleo is very sweet and gentle, loves to play but craves some one on one attention. Do you have a forever home where she can be spoiled and given the room to get the exercise she needs to get her girly ďŹ gure back?

Bella Trix came into the FVHS as she wasn’t allowed to stay in her old house where she’d lived for about a year. She is quite independent and isn’t fond of being cuddled. She will come and spend time with you and loves to play, especially to chase a laser pointer. She’s now getting used to being around other cats but is not used to dogs or small children but will probably accept them in time. Do you have the time and patience to let her gain your trust?

If you are looking to adopt one of these cats, or one of our other cats please contact us on: Tel: 604-820-2977 • 33103 North Railway Ave. Mission

The Grotto‌ a Piece of History The Oblate Fathers arrived on our shores in 1861, this year marks 150 yrs. In the 1980s, the Mission Heritage Association (M.H.A) began plans to save the historic lands of Mission. Through a lot of hard work the new Grotto opened in 1997.

Between 4 to 5,000 pilgrims will start arriving at 9 am for the Annual Pilgrimage.

The shrine was the dying wish of Bishop Louis J. D’Herbomez. The site reminded him of the Grotto of Our Lady Lourdes in France. In ill health, the Bishop was called to Rome in 1887. He feared he may never return and swore to raise a shrine in honour of the Virgin Mary if he did. The ďŹ rst Grotto was built in 1892. The original Grotto was a six-sided cupola shrine with a silver dome, laden with stained glass skylights topped by a white cross. Three sides opened to reveal an altar and a statue of the Virgin Mary. The Grotto today is a replica of the ďŹ rst.

NEW FESTIVAL IN MISSION CALLS CHRISTIANS TO JUSTICE AND CREATIVITY Organisers of the first annual “Creative World” arts and justice festival are hoping that the gathering will be a catalyst for conversation and action around justice and creativity within the Christian community. The grassroots camping festival will take place over the weekend of 12-14 August in Mission, BC at St Mary’s, 34110 Lougheed Highway (Stolo Nation HQ). Shane Claiborne, Bob Ekblad and first nations activist and pastor, Cheryl Bear, are among those scheduled to speak and lead workshops with titles such as “How to fight trafficking in your own neighbourhood.” Meanwhile, a children’s program run by Christian environmentalists, A Rocha, will give the younger ones a taste of what the adults are experiencing. Local musicians and bands will be playing at various times throughout the weekend, and Juno awardwinning rapper Shad will feature on the opening night. For aspiring musicians, the Watershed Arts Cafe Tent will have an open mic and late night acoustic sets. Four “Artists in Residence” have been chosen to create art on site to highlight issues of injustice as well as the grassroots organisations that work in those areas. In keeping with the justice-oriented ethos of the festival, participants are being asked to bring their camping gear and sleep in tents on the First Nations land hosting the festival, as well as carpool or ride bikes to the venue. Tickets are on sale now at www. creativeworldfestival.org and also available at the gate.
