PUBLISHER'S HER S NOTE

BACK TO SCHOOL!

BC

After a sun-kissed, fun-filled summer, it's time to get back into the swing of things. We may feel saddened by the falling of leaves and the cooler temperatures, but with autumn, there is a sense of renewal: new classrooms, new friends and new activities. There's also a renewed sense of excitement on First Avenue. This fall will see the completion of the Revitalization of Downtown Mission and new small businesses are popping up everywhere. It is also a good time to renew and rethink our spending habits to support local businesses when possible. Mission's shopping, eating and service offerings are growing.

Sometimes we don't realize that as a business owner in Mission, the decision involves more just the store front and the financial investment. Many business owners bring their children, spouses or parents to live in Mission. And as a result, they are also investing in Mission’s education, sports organizations, lifetime learning programs, arts and music development; and are contributing to the welfare and growth of our community. Mission is worth investing in. We are surrounded by beautiful lakes & forests; have a rich tapestry of culture and diversity; and have a wealth of talent in our community. Plus it's just nice that wherever you go, you are greeted with a smile!

By Cory Cassel, Former Owner/Publisher, What’s On! Mission Magazine. Currently on Hiatus in Japan but still Invested in the Future of Mission!

WONDER WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT? WHY SO MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO CARE ABOUT ELECTIONS AND VOTING?

O

n October 20th, you will be asked to vote for Mission’s next Mayor, 6 City Councillors and 4 School Trustees. These are the individuals that will make the decisions over the next 4 years that will shape the future of your community. They will decide how much you will pay for property taxes and how to spend your hardearned tax dollars. Consider the influence that this relatively small group of people will have over the things that matter most to you. Here are just some of the things that local politicians have the ability to change: Property Tax Rates, the Leisure Centre, Parks, Roads, Snow Removal, Police Services, Fire and Rescue Services, Public Transit, the Clarke Theatre, the Library, Business Licences, Sports Playing Fields and the Sports Park, Land Use (what gets put where), Economic Development, Sewer, the Water you Drink, Social Development, Community Beautification, the West Coast Express, Cultural Resources, Bylaws, Garbage and Recycling, Dog Licences, School Boundaries, and much more! In 2014, only 33.3% of Eligible Voter’s (8,258 out of 24,778) decided who would make decisions for 100% of the residents of the District of Mission.

ELLEN - MISSION SEPT OCT 2018.indd 31

Hockridge

If you didn’t vote, chances are, your voice wasn’t heard and the folks making decisions on your behalf were doing so without your input! Imagine paying a few thousand dollars a year in property taxes without any influence in how those tax dollars are spent on the things that matter most to you and your family. If you didn’t vote, then your neighbors likely had more influence in how your taxes were spent than you did! The votes cast on October 20th will affect Mission for not only the next 4 years, but potentially the decisions that will affect generations of Mission residents. Isn’t that important enough for you to get engaged? To read up on the issues that matter to you? To find out where the candidates stand on the issues? Read their bios in the local paper. Attend an All Candidates Meeting or two. Do some research. Invest in your future and the future of your community. You know what they say, if you don’t vote, you can’t complain about the decisions made by your elected representatives for the next four years! You want to be able to comment on local issues on Mission Neighbours, don’t you? Then Get Out and Vote!

Art Teacher

Paint Parties

Donna Duvall Nature, Health & a Holistic Approach to Art

Testimonial Written by Mary Trivisano Donna Duvall is a talented Mission artist who combines a holistic approach to art by stressing nature and its health benefits through a variety of mediums. When taking her classes, one not only is learning how to paint but is also experiencing a sense of peacefulness which lessens stress and promotes a sense of well-being. Donna is also a committed community volunteer giving not only of her time but also of her talent. She frequently teaches classes for children at the Mission Arts Council and Mission Community Services. She is a member of Mission Artist Association, Valley Women’s Network, Soroptimist Western Canada Region Board, Board Member of Mission Arts Council , and an active Contributor to local wildlife and SPCA Fundraising. Donna’s specialty strength is pet portrait, whether by acrylic on canvas or color pencil. She understands the emotional attachment that people have to their pet and this is reflected in her commissioned portraits. She manages to capture not only the physical qualities but also the inner essence of each animal. With Christmas coming, what a wonderful gift to give one of her pet portraits.

About Donna I am a local artist that paints many styles and objects but pet portraits and wildlife painting are my strengths. I love nature, wildlife, pets and farm animals, which probably stems from my childhood growing up on a farm in Northern Saskatchewn. I have been creative all my life but started to paint as an adult after my kids were grown. I'm a self taught artist and have arrived at a place where I'm comfortable painting for others and their pets. Call me to discuss how we can capture your furry friends in art.

Through trial and error and a few workshop by art mentors, I found my direction and my way. You just need desire and the need to feed your inner artist!

Did you know...

What's On! in the Community

...that fr f om its humble beginnings in 1946 as a minor part of the Mission Board of Trade's Strawberry Festival, the Mission Soapbox Derby grew to be a maj a or event eventually overshadowing the Strawberry Festival, attracting 20,000 people in 1956. In 1974 due to a lack of interest and the withdrawal of a maj a or sponsor the derby was cancelled, and was not reestab a lished until 1999, a quarter of a century later. The Mission Mission & District Soapbox Derby Association has been running the derby since 2002. (S ( ourc r e: Mi Mission Mu M seum & www.mis i sionsoap a box o .com) m
