We recently interviewed Erin Moore, Executive Director of I AM SOMEONE, about the society, their recent annual online auction and how they are helping youth being bullied in the Lower Mainland. 1. How did I AM SOMEONE come about? I AM SOMEONE was formed in 2012 by community leaders in Port Coquitlam following the tragic suicides of a number of local youth. 2. How did the online auction start? How many years has it been going? Last year the Coquitlam Centre marketing department put on the online auction with all the proceeds going to the I AM SOMEONE Ending Bullying Society. This year, due to time constraints and too many events going on at the same time, Coquitlam Centre offered to be a major sponsor and the I AM SOMEONE Society hosted the event. This is the second year we have done this. 3. Was it successful this year? How much money was raised? The Ultimate Online Auction was a huge success again this year matching the same amount of funds raised last year . . . . $20,000. 4. Where does the money go? This past year, in partnership with bc211, I AM SOMEONE now delivers the texting service from Whistler to Hope, 7 days a week, 8am – 11pm and it is I AM SOMEONE’S goal and responsibility to market the service so youth know about the texting service. 5. Who were some of the businesses/sponsors? Coquitlam Centre, Dominion Lending Centres, Tri-City News, Westwood Printing, Tower Graphics and Jolly Roger Creative – amazing sponsors!

Organizing 101 Cathy Minler

A New Year always symbolizes a new start to me and that means getting rid of all the old junk that we no longer need but, for some reason, have hung onto and stored for months. It also means cleaning up the house and getting cupboards, closets and files in order so we can start this brand new year off on the right foot.

TOSS, DONATE, SELL. Those are the only categories you need and everything will fall into one of them. Place every item from that room into these piles. Only the KEEP items will go back into the room. The TOSS items can go to the dump or you can call a junk removal company, the DONATE items can go to Value Village or a charity and the SELL items go on craigslist or into a garage sale.

Luckily I’m a very organized person and love to organize and downsize, so I don’t have a lot to do each year. But for those that don’t find organizing a fun way to spend a weekend, here are some tips to get you started and make the task seem less overwhelming.

4. Not sure what to get rid of? If you haven’t used it or looked at it in the last year then you don’t need it. Exception: family/childhood mementoes. Taxes paperwork – keep these for 7 years then shred. (Note: make sure you shred any paperwork that has any personal information on it.)

1. Break it down – break your home down into sections, most likely room by room, and make a list of what you want to accomplish in each room. Then break it down again by picking one task in one room to work on. That is the only task you need to think about.

5. Once the room is empty make sure to give it a good clean and even a fresh coat of paint if it needs it or if you feel up to it!

2. Once you’ve chosen your task, set aside a time that you will work on it and then set a timer for whatever amount of time works for you, even if it’s just 5 minutes. Then focus solely on that task for that time. Once the timer rings, you’re done. Repeat this until all the tasks you want to accomplish in each room are done. 3. If you are sorting items in a room, then find a space where you can sort everything into piles: KEEP,

6. When you return the items to the room, make sure you they are put back in an orderly way so you know where to find them. Get some banker boxes from the office stationary store and write on the front exactly what’s in them. Get some files for your bills, etc too. (These are much cheaper at the dollar store.) Remember that clutter not only creates mess and chaos in your home, it creates chaos in your life too. It costs you time, money and energy. Are you willing to pay that price for some stuff that you don’t even need?

Student Feature Each issue we are featuring a youth in Port Coquitlam that is doing great things in their community. This issue we’re putting the focus on Terra Pinheiro, an honour roll grade 12 student at Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School. Terra is a hardworking, dependable student, very enthusiastic with a love for working with others. She enjoys being challenged and trying new things and meeting new people. She has maintained first class honours (+80%) since grade eight. Volunteering in Port Coquitlam is very important to Terra as demonstrated through her numerous volunteer experience. Terra currently spends her volunteer time helping kids learn how to swim at Hyde Creek Rec Centre, knitting hats and scarves at her school for those in need and reading scripture to the kids at St. Luke’s Parish. She also volunteers at The Door is Open in the downtown eastside in Vancouver where she helps with meal preparation and socializing with the guests. Education is also very important to Terra as evidenced through the honours and awards she has received in recent years: • Grade Seven – Religion Award - highest mark in the class • Grade Nine – Music Award – one of the 3 highest marks in the class • Continuously on First Class Honour Roll since Grade Eight • Selected by Port Coquitlam Rotary Club to represent our city at the Democracy in Youth Conference 2015 in Victory BC Terra is definitely a youth making a difference at Archbishop Carney and in her community of Port Coquitlam. How much water should I be drinking? Lori Fredin ater is probably one of the most amazing elements. We are made mostly out of water, so we absolutely HAVE to consume it to stay alive, and it sounds and looks beautiful. So...how much water are we really supposed to be drinking and why is it so important?

W

The body can last weeks without food...but only days without water. It is the foundation of our blood, it is in our muscles and cells, fat and bones, cushions our joints, and also clears out the waste products from our bodies. Simply put, we need water to maintain the health and integrity of every single cell in our body. Without water, we die.

How much water should I be consuming daily? Well the rule is that you should be drinking at least half of your body weight in water every day. Here is my calculation to help you:

Some ways to make your water more exciting: • I love infusing my water with frozen berries or fresh berries, mint leaves, cucumbers and lemons. Some people even will freeze berries in their ice cubes. • Maybe think about investing in a soda stream. This makes you feel like you are drinking a carbonated beverage and you can add lemon or strawberries to it to make it exciting. • <RX FDQ EX\ QDWXUDOO\ ÁDYRUHG VRGD ZDWHU VXFK DV Dasani or Nestle with no added sugar. • Mark off a large container and pour from that daily so you can keep track. Just remember that water is essential to your health and make an effort to drink more and you will feel less bloated, and your overall wellbeing will improve.

Drink up!!

150lbs divided by 2 = 75oz 75oz x 30mLs = 2250mLs *there is 1000mLs in a litre 2250mLs = 2.5Litres of water each day ** Now if I am extremely active or out in the hot sun all day, I might try to add to this but you also do not want to overhydrate. ** Kids and seniors are very susceptible to dehydration... rule of thumb is that if they are feeling thirsty, they are already dehydrated. I know you are thinking, are you kidding me? I will be peeing all day. Yes, you will be going to the washroom more often but, \RX DUH ÁXVKLQJ VR PXFK ZDVWH IURP \RXU ERG\ DQG keeping your blood and cells clean. I know a lot of you think, you can't consume that much water or maybe you don't like water...but, there are ways to get the water intake.

Winter Pet Safety Even though we might not get the cold, snowy winter weather like the rest of the country, we do still get some not-so-nice weather which can affect our furry family members. Here are some tips to keep your pets happy and healthy during the winter months: 1. Be sure to clean their paws after being outside for a walk as the salt used to melt snow/ice can irritate their paws causing them to lick them and ingest the salt. 2. Watch out for antifreeze at this time of year. Dogs and cats are very attracted to the sweet taste of it but a mere tablespoon can kill a small cat or dog. 3. Thump the hood of your vehicle before starting it up on especially cold

mornings. Cats will climb their water source has inside to keep warm not become frozen. It from the engine. A quick might not be frozen solid thump on the hood will but if the top is ice then scare them out before they can’t access the you start up. water below. 4.
