LETS GO FOR A WALK

My dog loves the vet! He DVVRFLDWHV WKH YHW RIÀFH ZLWK positive attention, smells to explore, and of course, treats. For some dogs, however, it’s not such a walk in the park. A dog’s fear of the vet becomes a learned behaviour after a not-so-pleasant experience. It may have been painful, overwhelming, and with a stressed-out owner in tow. Next thing you know, your next routine checkup involves you dragging your dog thru the door. Here’s a few tips for a more stress-free trip to the vet: Do your research Call around. Ask the clinic what their philosophy is on handling dogs. Ask them if they’re force free? Are the staff versed in behavioral training? Are they responsive to your dog’s needs? Are they ok if you bring some aids from home? Avoid potential problems Go at a quieter time of day to avoid a packed waiting room. For reactive dogs, have them wait in the car until the exam room is available. Look after hygiene Taking regular care of your pet’s hygiene at home such as ear cleaning, nail trims, and teeth cleaning will not only help avoid costly trips to the vet, but

will teach your dog to become familiar with being touched in more sensitive areas. Simulate a vet visit Make a trip to the vet simply for your dog to smell the building and practice going in with some tasty treats awaiting them at reception. Bring along aids Bring elements of home along for comfort. Pack tasty treats for your vet to give, your dog’s favorite toy, and their blanket/ bed for them to lie on. If biting is a concern, muzzle your dog prior to entering. It will help destress all parties.

A SPORTSMAN AND A GENTLEMAN WE ARE CANADA ‌ Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.â€? In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours ‌ in hopes of becoming friends.

Quick! How many people can you think of in Burnaby who have lived through a national revolution, scored a goal in professional soccer in front of 90,000 people and managed their own business here in Burnaby for 40 years? If you’re wondering who that could possibly be, we’re happy to introduce you to Joseph Csabai. This 86-year-old gentleman has lived in Burnaby for some 50 years, raised a family and now enjoys leisurely days in retirement, often spending time at Nuvola Gelato on Hastings Street. But it didn’t start that way! Joseph was born in 1932 in a small village in eastern Hungary. Raised in a typically modest home, Joseph was much like every young kid growing up in Europe. He dreamed of playing soccer at an elite, even professional level. While those dreams are usually dashed for most

youngsters as time goes by, for Joseph they became reality. He ended up being chosen for Hungary’s national soccer training center and later, for Hungary’s elite soccer team, Fernencvaros. During this time, Hungary was experiencing great political turmoil and the people eventually rose up in revolution against the Soviet-controlled government in 1956. Joseph and some fellow soccer players managed to escape from his troubled homeland and eventually, Joseph went to Spain where he played professionally with Real Zaragoza. After scoring a key goal in a game in front of 90,000 people in Madrid, Joseph was given the opportunity to sign with the famous Real Madrid team. However, misfortune struck when he was injured just before signing the contract and it proved to be the end of his playing career. While recuperating, Joseph met a chiropractor who encouraged him to go to New York and study chiropractic medicine. Joseph did just that, studying and also teaching Physical Education in a wellrespected uptown school to youngsters that included the likes of John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Willie Mays, Jr. Soon after, Joseph was asked by his friend and Hungarian soccer legend, Ferenc Puskås to join him on the coaching staff of a new professional soccer team in Vancouver, Canada.

The year was 1968 and the team was the Vancouver Royals. It was a new league in a place where soccer did not enjoy the popularity that it did in much of the world. That coaching role lasted just for one season and a few years later, Puskas asked Joseph to move with him to Barcelona for a new coaching opportunity. However, Joseph had met a young woman and decided to stay, making his home right here in Burnaby. While establishing his chiropractic practice, Joseph became very involved in the soccer community, coaching at various levels and helping to establish the now tremendous popularity of soccer in the /RZHU 0DLQODQG DQG WKURXJKRXW %& +LV LQÁXHQFH upon the BC soccer community extends through his son, Rob, who has been involved for many years with both Soccer Canada and BC Soccer. Meanwhile, Dr. Joseph Csabai also became successful as a chiropractor. He established Brentwood Chiropractic & Sports Rehab Centre, treating everything from common back ailments to sports injuries for many amateur and professional athletes. This practice he started more than 40 years ago is now managed by eldest son, Chris. Joseph is living proof that immigrants are one of the best things about Canada. He’s added much to the health and physical well-being of many through his business. He’s contributed enormously to the sports culture of our community and our province. This gentleman loves soccer. He loves his family. He loves a good gelato. And he loves Burnaby!
