I’ve had some questions directed my way recently that I thought might be of interest and helpful to our readers. Here are a few of them:

PET VISITS & SERVICES • DOG WALKING & TRAINING QUALITY PET ACCESSORIES

Is Burnaby a dog (pet) friendly city? Yes! Burnaby residents spend more money on their cats than any other city in Canada and are ranked in the top 5 cities for spoiling their beloved dogs. Surprised? Have a look and see if your pet(s) have more accessories than you. I know mine does! Where are some good places in Burnaby to take my dog for a walk? Burnaby is a gem for beautiful parks and trails to discover. Did you know, we have the longest recreational, multiuse trail network in the world in our backyard? The Trans Canada trail is an iconic and wonderful on-leash trail for you and your dog! Robert Burnaby and Barnet Marine Park are my favourite off-leash trails to visit on the weekends. I live in a condo. Do you have any suggestions for a good breed of dog for me? All dogs need daily exercise, plenty of attention and access to the outdoors, but Greyhounds and Bulldogs are considered the best breeds for apartment living. They are well known to

be couch potatoes, but will rise to the occasion for a walk with their companion. Does Burnaby require my dog to be licensed, and if so, for what? Like most cities, Burnaby does require you to register and license your dog. A license on your dog’s collar is the fastest and easiest way for your dog to be returned to you if he/she goes missing. The licensing fee also helps to support your local animal control/shelter, which in Burnaby’s case is the SPCA. There seems to be a petrelated service business on every corner in this city. How do I go about finding the right one? Personally, I like referrals from family and friends, so ask your network for recommendations or join a local group/page on social media to get suggestions. A couple tips when searching: (1) interview the potential dog daycare or walker just as much as they quiz you about your dog, and (2) for grooming salons, check out their “before and after shots” of different breed cuts. Also, bring a picture of the style you want, and speak with the groomer instead of the receptionist so there is no miscommunication.

Happy Tails Everyone!

BURNABY FARMERS’ MARKET: A PLACE WITH GREAT PEOPLE SUPPORTING GREAT NEEDS June. When you visit the Burnaby Farmers’ Market, you’re generally expecting a lot of fresh food and artisan products. And you definitely get that! But there’s much more to a Farmers’ Market than just the quality products. There’s some fantastic people involved as well! Barry and Marj Redl, owners of Redl’s Homegrown Beef are two of those people. They represent three generations of farmers raising cattle in a way that’s respectful of both the land and the animal. Barry is a true cowboy and has a big heart. In 2017, when the wildfires were raging through the Cariboo region, Barry fought 24 hours a day to make sure not only his farm was saved from the wildfires, but that his fellow farmers remained safe as well.

Another couple at Burnaby Farmers’ Market is Tim and Flo Rempel of Rockweld Farms in Abbotsford. They and their family produce organically fed, BCSPCA certified chickens and eggs. In raising the chickens, they believe in treating them humanely and allowing them to roam freely. In the past two years, Tim and Flo lost a daughter-in-law and their own daughter to cancer. Through their involvement with the Farmers’ Market network, they have found great support from this caring community of people. Burnaby Farmers’ Market expresses that same caring commitment to people through its annual involvement in the Run Up For Down Syndrome event in early

AN INTERNMENT CAMP SURVIVOR’S STORY WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.

There are times when the story of an immigrant continues into the next generation. Such was the case for Shoji Nishihata, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Japan prior to 1930. The struggles and discrimination that many new immigrants experience were felt by Shoji and his siblings in a most profound manner. When Shoji was born in 1933, his family lived at 457 Powell Street in Vancouver, opposite Oppenheimer Park. Life was good. His father established a sheet metal business in the front of their house, providing a decent living for the family. Shoji and his brothers played marbles and enjoyed watching the Asahi Japanese baseball team at the Park. On Sundays, he and his father and brothers would travel to various locations for enjoyable days of fishing. All was good until one day while out fishing near Mission, BC. The RCMP stopped them and questioned his father. It was highly unusual, and so was the trip back home as they found city streets surprisingly empty. It was June 7, 1941, the day that Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, and a day that would bring Canada into war against Japan. It was also a day that would have a significant impact upon Shoji and his family. The Canadian government soon established one of the most tragic policies in Canadian history, enforcing a move of all Japanese Canadians to internment camps in the BC interior. The policy resulted in Shoji’s family being forced to re-locate to Tashme, BC

the largest of the internment camps. It ended up being a major loss for the family as not only did they have to leave their home in Vancouver, but Shoji’s father had to give up his growing business. However, for Shoji, being a 9 year old child at the time, this was just another adventure! At first, there was no school in Tashme, bringing a certain joy to him and his friends! In time, school was established as were various other programs, including martial arts clubs, baseball teams, music and dance programs, Sunday School and various forms of entertainment. Shoji and all the other kids in Tashme participated in these programs. In fact, the Tashme Boy Scouts was the largest in Canada at one point! After the War ended, Shoji’s family eventually settled in Montreal as the government did not allow them to return to Vancouver at that point. In Montreal, his family was re-established and Shoji was later able to attend McGill University, training to become a mechanical engineer. He married and together with his wife Eve, had three sons. After working for several years in Eastern Canada, Shoji and his family returned to Vancouver about 40 years ago. Eve, has passed away now, but Shoji lives happily at the Nikkei Seniors Home here in Burnaby. He has volunteered for several years at the Nikkei National Museum, working primarily on the records of the Japanese internment camps. One might suspect after experiencing such pointed discrimination and injustice, Shoji would be angry or bitter for how his family was mistreated. Such is not definitely not the case! While acknowledging the injustice, Shoji has an acceptance of everything that happened and a certain peace over his experiences. For those of us who have grown up in more recent decades, the resilience of Japanese Canadians who experienced the internments camp is truly inspiring. To see the understanding and forgiveness of people like Shoji Nishihata is thoroughly amazing!
