Meet April Buhrma

HOME WHERE THE HEART IS

WE ARE CANADA ‌ Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.â€? In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours ‌ in hopes of becoming friends.

We’ve all been there at one time or another. Maybe as a kid, you felt it after you wandered away from your parents in a crowded store. Or perhaps you felt it when you started at a new school or took a new job. It’s that feeling of being lost. Feeling alone in the world. Feeling cut off from the familiar and those who love you and have your back. If you’ve ever felt like that, you know a little of what Siriporn (April) Buhrman felt 14 years ago when she uprooted her life from her hometown of Chiang Mai, Thailand and moved more than 11,000 kilometres to our city of Burnaby. She left behind not only her parents, siblings and many friends, but also that sense of belonging that we feel when we’re in a place where we’re comfortable, secure and “at home. April had grown up in the countryside on the edge of Chiang Mai, a city of about a million people. Like so many children here in Canada, she has fond memories of her childhood home, playing with her cousins and being involved in sports like volleyball at school. After college and university, she established her own small business. She also met a young guy from Canada, and eventually they got married and moved back to Misha’s homeland of Canada. All of a sudden, April was in a foreign country where there were few she could understand and even fewer who could understand her. There were new customs, an unfamiliar city and no job prospects

that respected the Bachelor’s degree she had earned back home in Thailand. And that feeling of being lost doesn’t go away like it does for a child when his parents rescue him from the Lost and Found. It takes years of learning, becoming acclimatized and adjusting to being away from those you love. April was fortunate in that she had Misha, who was from BC and had lived in Burnaby for several years. Together they embarked on life together in Canada and after having their daughter, April did like many young moms and stayed at home to raise her and to care for their family. In early 2018, after being a homemaker for the better part of 14 years, April again did what many stay-at-home moms do: she decided to get back into the workforce. However, having been a business owner in Thailand, she had a taste of being her own boss. So April took her education and her experience working part-time in Thai restaurants and decided to open her own establishment. What she ended up doing was taking over the long-established Jane’s Diner on Hastings Street and decided to serve the old clientele their familiar breakfast plates while introducing her own à DYRXU RI 7KDL IRRG LQ WKH DIWHUQRRQ DQG HYHQLQJ $SULO QRZ SRXUV her heart into serving up authentic Northern Thai cuisine like Khao Soi and Green Curry with Noodles. The adjustment to business owner hasn’t been easy, nor has the shift from diner to Thai restaurant. However, together with husband Misha and her small staff, April is moving forward and making it happen at Noodle Paradise at Jane’s. Like so many immigrants, April is bringing a taste of her beloved homeland to her new home in Burnaby!

HUMANS OF BURNABY - Connecting the community through story-telling “I’m 102 years old this year, born on August 30th, 1916 in Saskatchewan. I came out to BC in the beginning of the war in 1940, working as a waitress LQ WKH RIÀ FHU·V GLQLQJ URRP , VWDUWHG waitressing when I was 13 years old and I worked as a waitress all my life. I met my husband Johnny when he left the army. A friend introduced us to each other and we got married in 1949. We bought a lot on Malvern Ave above Deer Lake for 100 something dollars. It used to be all farms and chicken coops there. My philosophy of life is to be kind to everybody and to be understanding.

I don’t like everybody, that’s for sure (laughs). I believe you have to be open to everything but you don’t have to go along with it. That’s just the way it is. That’s what makes us all different. Up until last year, I would help other seniors do their shopping and accompany them to their appointments. ,W ZDV IXQ DQG LW À OOHG LQ P\ WLPH , DOZD\V had a full calendar and I got around by walking and public transit. Now I’ve retired from doing that. I’ve lived in Burnaby for over 70 years and around Brentwood for 25 years. To me, this is home.”

Inspired by Humans of New York, Humans of Burnaby is a collection of vignettes of the lives of people in Burnaby. By sharing the passions, joys, and challenges of different individuals, we hope to create a better understanding between citizens and form a stronger, and more compassionate community. As advocates for those living in poverty and isolation, Burnaby Community Services especially strives to amplify the voices of those who often feel 'invisible'. Everyone's story is important to us. Please contact Salena at 604-292-3903 / salena@bbyservices.ca if you would like to share yours.
