HUMANS OF BURNABY - Connecting the community through story-telling “When I was young, I was bullied. That experience was very traumatic and stays with me today. But that’s part of what helps me be more empathetic towards others.
“As a kid I always felt a bit different because I was usually one of the only Jewish kids in my school – I was an invisible minority. It was hard to understand this as a kid but I do now.
“The earliest memory that I have was in elementary school. I was out in the playground when all of a sudden, I found myself surrounded by a group of kids. I remember one girl in particular was making fun of me and started to physically gang up on me. That’s all that I remember about that day.
“I grew up with my maternal grandparents around and they believed strongly in giving back and the importance of community. Their legacy was instilled in me and my family. I believe my experience being bullied combined with being surrounded by family who believed so strongly in community helped shape who I am today. One of ABC Recycling’s core values is to strengthen our community. Part of my role is to ensure that we are living that value.
“Later on, I had a couple of other experiences of being bullied in elementary school. I was shy and insecure when I was young. Kids pick up on those vibes. Maybe something was going on at home for those girls; who knows – that could be why they bullied me. Everyone has a story, right? But it’s unfortunate that that’s how kids behave sometimes.
“The value of giving back and community involvement resonated with me. It has stayed with me until today and guides me in the work that I do.
Inspired by Humans of New York, Humans of Burnaby is a collection of vignettes of the lives of people in Burnaby. By sharing the passions, joys, and challenges of different individuals, we hope to create a better understanding between citizens and form a stronger, and more compassionate community. As advocates for those living in poverty and isolation, Burnaby Community Services especially strives to amplify the voices of those who often feel 'invisible'. Everyone's story is important to us. Please contact Salena at 604-292-3903 / salena@bbyservices.ca if you would like to share yours.

Pear Tart Tatin
Pecan Pie - A Classic! Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes
What’s Recipe Page On! TM
Ingredients
FXS J R] H[WUD À QH VXJDU 1/8 cup / 40g / 1 1/3 oz cold butter, chopped 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g / 13 1/4 oz all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve
Method
Preheat oven to 400F / 200C / gas 6. Put a 8 inch / 21cm diameter frying pan with an ovenproof handle (this bit is important!) on a burner over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel coloury. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture.
10
Turn the heat down and cook for 5–10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan. Roll out the pastry to about 1/4 inch / 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 10 inch / 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. Bake the pie in the oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the onto the plate. Serve with cream. To advertisetart call 604-388-4258 or e-mail info@whatsonburnaby.ca

A little goes a long way! A great activity for teens to participate in is Rally-O or a Sniff4fun class at your local dog training center. And of course, take advantage of your local dog parks and dog off leash trails. Dogs thrive on consistency so keeping a schedule and set of routines is ideal for your dog. This not only helps create a well-balanced dog, but produces a more harmonious household in the process.

Making Business Better! An update from the Burnaby Board of Trade
Burnaby Board of Trade Launches New Business Resource Guide The Burnaby Board of Trade (BBOT) has launched a Business Resource Guide for new businesses which curates useful tips, templates, how-to’s and walkthroughs in a single location in an effort to try and make the process of starting a new business a bit easier for Burnaby entrepreneurs. The Business Resource Guide is divided into nine sections based on the life-cycle of a new business: research, prepare, register, finance, locate, market, hire, expand and exit. Each section offers connections to unique information relevant to small business owners, from databases and statistics, to government forms and applications. “As part of our mission of ‘making business better,’ we thought it would be useful to bring together in one spot a variety of small business resources that are currently spread across several locations,” said Paul Holden, BBOT President & CEO. “This guide will continue to expand and be updated with new information and connections to helpful resources over time, and we hope it helps alleviate some of the confusion that can be experienced when starting a business.” The BBOT’s Business Resource Guide is available online at bbot.ca

WE ARE CANADA
Meet EÄłi Yoshikaw
Burnaby‌ a City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.â€? In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours ‌ in hopes of becoming friends.

While we all celebrated Terry’s incredible spirit and achievement, thousands of miles away in Tokyo, Japan, another young man heard about Terry Fox. This young fellow aspired to make a remarkable difference like Terry Fox, and to become a champion of the underdog. Eiji Yoshikawa had grown up in southern Japan playing baseball like so many youngsters in that country. CLUB HOUSE GALA
Where History Comes to Life
Thursday September 20th 2018, 5:30 - 10:00 pm Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, 900 West Georgia Street
Please join us for an evening of frivolity in support of some amazing kids. At BGC, what drives everything we do is the knowledge and belief that every kid is amazing. At our 12 neighbourhood-based Clubs, our people – cool, young mentors and role models – bond with kids by really seeing and hearing them. They use activities – sports, homework clubs, creative arts, healthy food and cooking programs, leadership development and safe access to the online world – as tools to connect with kids. The result? Kids choose to belong here.
