Gallery 7 Theatre Opens
Back to Classics Theatre Season with Short Play Festival
Gallery 7 Theatre is thrilled to open its 28th annual season of theatre with a short play festival called Abby Theatre Fest. Building on the success of last year’s One Act Play Showcase, Abby Theatre Fest will feature six entertaining short plays that will explore a variety of thought-provoking themes. Running September 19 – 22, 2018, the Festival will be held at the Yale Secondary School Theatre in Abbotsford. “If you’re looking for something edgy and something different, Abby Theatre Fest is the place to find it,” says Ken Hildebrandt, executive artistic director of Gallery 7 Theatre. “We’re taking some risks by exploring stories and material not normally seen on our mainstage that will result in a unique and exciting theatre experience for audiences.” While the plays will take a look at more mature themes, Hildebrandt indicates that the shows still fit with the mandate of theatre. “Gallery 7 Theatre exists to explore the human experience with a vision towards hope, reconciliation and redemption. We also want to inspire new work and provide opportunities for local artists to showcase their work. Abby Play Fest fits nicely into that mandate.” Hildebrandt is quick to add that there is a lot more to Abby Theatre Fest than just the plays. “Abby Theatre Fest gives emerging and established directors, playwrights, performers and theatre artists a chance to explore and develop their talents,” he says. “I’m very excited to say that two of the shows in this year’s festival are original works by local playwrights. These shows will receive their world premiere at the festival.” This shows being presented this year are as follows: • Suspension of Disbelief, an original comedy written and directed by James Lam. • Man of God, an original work by Eldon Letkeman and Nicolas Lucky and directed by Eldon Letkeman. • Reflections by Jennifer Kersley and directed by Rebecca Laurenti. • Harlequin Rhapsody by Dave Hudson and directed by Chris Taylor. • Sorry, Wrong Number by Lucille Fletcher and directed by Sue Backs • Mail Order Annie by Carl C. Cashin and directed by Danielle Milette. “There’s quite an eclectic and fun mix of plays at this year’s festival,” Hildebrandt continues. “There’s a lot for the heart, soul and mind and something to suit everyone’s tastes.” All shows will run all days of the festival though start times will vary from day to day. For full details on each play, including language warnings and start times, plus details on how to purchase tickets, can be found at www. gallery7theatre.com. Individual shows are $15.00/person or audiences can purchase a festival pass to see all six shows for $40.00. The festival will be held at the Yale Secondary School Theatre, 34620 Old Yale Road in Abbotsford. “Don’t miss this exciting festival highlighting a lesser produced theatrical form that is the one-act play,” concludes Hildebrandt. “Support locally grown, locally developed and locally produced live theatre!”

Pear Tart Tatin
Pecan Pie - A Classic! Serves: 6 Preparation time: 1 hour 20 minutes
What’s Recipe Page On! TM
Ingredients
FXS J R] H[WUD À QH VXJDU 1/8 cup / 40g / 1 1/3 oz cold butter, chopped 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large pears, peeled, cored and cut into wedges 375g / 13 1/4 oz all-butter puff pastry Double cream, to serve
Method
Preheat oven to 400F / 200C / gas 6. Put a 8 inch / 21cm diameter frying pan with an ovenproof handle (this bit is important!) on a burner over a medium heat. Add the sugar to the dry pan and heat, stirring constantly until it turns a lovely caramel coloury. Add the butter, ginger and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Place the pears in the caramel and spoon over the mixture. Turn the heat down and cook for 5–10 minutes until the pears are just tender and cooked but retain their shape. Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Arrange the pears to form an attractive pattern in the pan. Roll out the pastry to about 1/4 inch / 5mm thick and cut a disc slightly bigger than your pan (about 10 inch / 24cm). Place the pastry disc on top of the pears and caramel, then carefully tuck it snugly around the outside of the pears and down into the sides of the pan. Bake the pie in the oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and leave for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, place a large plate over the top and carefully turn the tart onto the plate. Serve with cream.
