Help Langley Outrun Cancer: The 34th Annual Terry Fox Run Sunday, September 14, 2014 – 10 am – Douglas Park, Langley City “I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to,” the words spoken by a true Canadian hero. Terry Fox had a single dream: a world without cancer. This year marks the 34th annual Terry Fox Run and we invite you to join Langley in working together to outrun cancer.

Seniors Games, and urge this year’s volunteers to spare some time for this half-day requirement. To volunteer, please call 604-533-0638. For more information, or to register, visit terryfox.org.

The Terry Fox Run has taken place in Langley City since 2000 and has a long standing tradition as the largest run in Langley. We are excited to introduce this year’s new co-chair, Rick Barnett, owner/operator of Valley First Aid. Volunteers can join Rick and The Langley City Firefighters among others contributing to the $650 million already raised for cancer research worldwide, in Terry’s name.

Langley Thunder Midget A1 Team Thundering Through the Season Monday night at the Langley Event Centre Field House a group of young men played another game. They have been playing these games for a long time and loving every minute. The effort was there, but on this night the result was not. Results however have been what this team has been about for the past six years. The Langley Thunder midget A-1 team has won The Canada Day tournament, in Calgary, at every level novice, peewee, bantam and are now looking to 4 Pete which has never been done. This tournament attracts some of the best lacrosse competition in North America. 2012 was a huge year for this team. The Langley Thunder midget A-1 team won the provincial championship which was the first time a Langley A level team in bantam has ever won that title. It all started when the kids got together and were just learning the game. They have grown to love the sport and the people around them. They are a motivated group that are looking forward to bringing home another title this year. They have learned what it means to deal with adversity, how to respond after a loss and how to lead. It was apparent watching these young men interact before and after the game that they respect each other and their coaches. They listened and took direction well. Lacrosse is moulding these boys into men. Even though they were down in this game they were encouraging each other at every opportunity. It didn’t get nasty out on the arena floor and it could have easily. Just watching these boys you could see a maturity about them. They are a team in all sense of the word. This Langley Thunder midget A-1 team represents what is right about community sports. It brings people together and focuses young peoples minds. It keeps them fit and best of all its just fun. May was the 3rd month in a row that over 40% of homes in Walnut Grove sold in one month, making the area one of the hottest markets in the lower mainland. While benchmark values remain steady, the media sale price has jumped from $537,000 in January to $590,000 in May. Basically, Walnut Grove is in an very strong sellers market.

DALLAS SMITH Hailing from British Columbia, Dallas brings a healthy dose of rock and roll power to his brand of lively country music. Producer Joey Moi captured his unique energy and unmistakable vocals on his breakout Canadian country debut, JUMPED RIGHT IN, which netted five 2013 CCMA award nominations. The CMW Radio Awards winner has once again teamed up with Joey Moi for his U.S. country debut on Big Loud Mountain. With energetic live shows and compelling tunes, it’s no surprise that Dallas, who fronted the wildly successful international rock band Default, has been tapped to open for music legend Bob Seger and is currently touring with Florida Georgia Line’s HERE’S TO THE GOOD TIMES TOUR. Produced by Joey Moi (Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen) and written by Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard along with Jaren Johnston, “Tippin Point” is an infectious party anthem that serves as the perfect prelude for what is to come from Dallas. “‘Tippin Point’ is that blend of what I love about country and rock,” shares Dallas Smith. “The song sums me up as an artist and is a great representation of where I’m going.” The song is now available at iTunes and will be featured on his forthcoming fulllength album. The elastic-voiced singer brings a fresh slant to country, a wall-ofsound approach that combines the vocals of country with the crunch of rock.

We were lucky enough to be able to interview Country Superstar Dallas Smith What part of Langley did you grow up in? My family moved from Surrey to Walnut Grove in 1984. I was 7 at the time. We lived around 210th st and 96th ave area. Any funny childhood stories about your neighborhood? So many great memories of that area. Playing street hockey is one of my favorites growing up there. Neighborhood was filled with a good group of kids. We have maintained contact with some of the neighbors and they have become great friends. You have seen many changes in Langley, what do you think of it now? I don’t remember driving thru that much traffic growing up. Tough to make your way down 200th at certain times of the day. I now live on the south side of highway 1. When I do make my way down to Fort Langley and drive thru my old stomping grounds the 1st thing I notice is the size of all the trees. Huge compared to how I remember them. Walnut Grove still has the same charm it did 20-30 years ago.

Where did you go to Highschool? Grade 8 I had to hop the bus down to Fort Langley fine arts highschool. WGSS wasn’t ready until my grade 9 year. Don’t have very many good memories of grade 8. Very awkward time as a 12-13 year old. WGSS on the other hand was great. Lots of great times and lots of trouble. Feel very lucky to have gone to school where I did.

Growing up, what kind of music were you into? The whole Seattle scene broke out when I started going to WGSS. Loved Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains. That school was filled with plaid

Did you ever imagine you would have such a successful career in music? I honestly stumbled into this. I never in a million years thought if be doing what I’m doing. I would come home from school and sing when no one was around. I got brave enough to sing a few cover songs when I was about 20 at my fellow Default members house just off of 204th st. The band started there in that garage. 3 of us went to school together When did you decide Country was your thing? As I got older I really started gravitating towards country music. The voices and storytelling grabbed my attention. Grew up with it in my house but rock was my 1st love. Once guitars became more of a mainstay in country I fell in love with it. Guys like Keith Urban became my go to records You had a successful run as the lead singer of Default. What is happening with Default now? Myself and the guys are still like brothers. Don’t see each other as much as we used to obviously but we keep in touch. Everyone is off doing their own thing and doing well.

You’re now raising a family here. Why is Langley still a good place to raise kids? I have strong ties to Langley and can’t see moving my family out of the area anytime soon. Love this city. I travel most of the year to some amazing places but nowhere else feels like Langley. It’s home. I take my kids down the same streets I grew on. Same trails and parks. Its an amazing city. We’re looking to make a bit of a move towards Brookswood possibly. Love that area. Big yards and some privacy

What’s all the Tweeting About? Online and offline marketing is inviting you daily to “Follow Us on Twitter.” You’ve taken a look at Twitter and you just don’t get it! And why should you even care? • Brands are moving to social media as a way to interact, share information, provide customer service and build relationships. • The most up-to-date news stories are being shared on Twitter first, as this fast-paced micro-blogging platform makes it easy to share information quickly without needing a lot of detail. • Small business is thriving on Twitter - connections, collaborations, B2B and joint ventures are being created daily.

3 Tips to help you get started 1. Choose a short Twitter name, if possible. (mine is @partnerinbiz, but shows up as Tracey Ehman) 2. Write posts that are about 110 – 120 long including your Twitter name so they can be easily retweeted. 3. Be sure to add your Avatar – it can be your photo, or something that would be recognizable to your potential followers, like a company logo. (As a rule I don’t follow those with only the default avatar.)

18

With Your MLA

We sat down with Rich Coleman to talk about “The Langleys”. Rich and his wife, Michele moved to Aldergrove in 1984. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1996 and has served 5 consecutive terms since. He and Michele are celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary in August and have 2 children and 3 grand-children. Here’s what we talked about: WO: When you and Michele moved to Langley 30 years ago the population was around 73 thousand. Now we’re at around 120 thousand. Of all the changes, what stands out the most in terms of the culture of this community? RC: School demographics more than anything else. When I became an MLA in 1996 Aldergrove needed another elementary school, had too many portables at Parkside, Aldergrove Elementary and Shortreed. So we went to work to get what became Betty Gilbert School. Now Betty Gilbert is a middle school. Aldergrove Elementary School is closed and Parkside has no more portables. What happened is the population shifted. Back in those days we were talking about closing RE Mountain Secondary School because they didn’t have enough students. Today we’re building a brand new high school in Willoughby and we have built a middle school and two new elementary schools. The shift happened because of development and growth in the area. We’ve seen a maturity in Walnut Grove where that high school had to be expanded two or three times. We had to chase that and it got pretty big.

You never seem to be able to catch up to the curve. It’s a challenge because you don’t “build it and they will come”, you build it when the population comes. It’s when the enrolment grows that you start to adjust your capital plan. It’s been a constant change.

WO: There are many events going on this summer in the Langleys and I am sure you will be at many of them, including Aldergrove Fair Days. What is your favourite part of the event? RC: I’d say the Quick Draw and the Chili Contest. WO: Can you tell us what the Quick Draw is? We have a really good rod and gun club here in Langley and they have two world champions in what they call “Quick Draw”. So they have a special kind of revolver that they load with a plug. Then there’s a stand with a balloon in it that’s rigged to a timer. When the light comes on, you draw the revolver from the holster and shoot. The pressure from the plug pops the balloon and it’s all timed. WO: You have been actively involved in Kinsmen, the Chamber of Commerce, received prestigious

Rotary awards. What advice would you give to young residents who want to get involved in the community but don’t know where to start? RC: Just join something! There’s a new generation coming up that just aren’t Joiners. So groups like Kinsmen and Rotary are waning down in numbers. They’re just not growing at the grass roots level and that’s the same for all of the old service clubs. The thing is, if a community doesn’t have volunteers, things would be really messed up. Events like the International days in August just wouldn’t happen. That’s the way you meet people and it becomes your social life. Otherwise, you’re home, surfing electronics and watching television, living with your kids in a bubble. People don’t get out, kids don’t play the way we did when we were kids. And so the parents don’t really socialize the same way because they aren’t involved in something. Kinsmen was really good for us because, anytime we moved, we made friends instantly. And your kids can be involved too. Take the Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Center; my daughter and my son both swept floors and help with the painting when we were building it as Kinsmen.

We thank Rich for sitting down with us and for welcoming What’s On! Langley to the community.

We met at his office in the Langley Events Centre.

Clay Martin, AScT Founder • Infinity Mixed Martial Arts Ltd. http://www.infinitymma.ca/ Four kids sit cross legged in front of us at the dojo, one is epileptic, two are tired from a long week of school and the fourth, well, she is giggling away with the other three despite having a tooth pulled this morning. They are all oblivious to the adults watching and without prior knowledge there is now no way to tell which of these kids struggles with their health or had a challenging day. When they arrived thirty minutes ago they were all in different moods and at least two seemed annoyed with something. Now, after some team play and some individual physical activity, they are all happy and content. “It’s magic” says one parent. Her son always puts up a struggle when it is time for class, he loves his Minecraft and turning that off always seems to be a world ending event. In fact she says, he stays grumpy the entire drive and for the first few minutes of class. Good

instructors, whether Martial Artists, Baseball Coaches, Swim Instructors etc., they know this struggle. Getting the kids to class is the toughest part. Truth is we as adults know it as well, the only thing tougher than the workout is getting the courage up to get to the workout! The kids know it too, if only sub-consciously. At the end of our 45 minute class the kids are all calm, a little red faced, happy and tired. It is a good feeling and you can tell by the smiles that it was good to let off some steam. All the struggles of the day are forgotten. Homework tonight will be easier because all the spare energy has been burned off. Getting them fed well will be easier too, as one little boy says “I could eat a whole watermelon right now!”… Mmmm, sounds good.

BBQ Tips from Heritage Meats’ Eugene Vanderberg Tips for BBQ’ing STEAK • Use a dry rub on your meat to enhance its flavor • Don’t smother in Sauce. Use a rub if anything. • Take meat out of the fridge and let it warm up to room temperature before you put it on the BBQ. It will cook faster and more evenly. • Cook approx. 5 minutes on each side • Remove from bbq and cover with an aluminum foil “Tent” for approx. 10 minutes • Enjoy with SIDES – Stuffed Potatoes made fresh in-house are filled with real potato, cheese and sour cream. Salads made fresh every day, just the way you would at home.

Some other great choices for the Summer • CHICKEN – From local farms in the Fraser Valley. We marinade using our own sauces which contain less salt and all natural ingredients like lemon juice and oils. • BISON – Grass fed in the Kamloops area, this meat has less fat, cooks quickly and is less filling for those hot summer days. • SAUSAGE – Made fresh every Thursday and available in store. Cook on low heat.

We take pride in selling only the highest quality products, free of pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics, fillers or animal by-products. What’s Mortgages On! By Kris Grasty

TM

Fixed vs. Variable

Which one is right for you? With an ARM, you only have to pay 3 months interest.

There are positives that lure clients to one or the other and though I am a pro-variable guy personally, each client will have their own preference. They may be more or less tolerant of risk for many different reasons. I know that each client’s needs and overall scenario is unique.

Fixed Rates Come in Different Term Lengths!

To speak on the Variable advantages, now more recognized as an Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM) and then on the Fixed advantages…

Security for the Risk Averse!

ARM is the Statistical Winner!

• 8/10 times Variable is the historical winner and benefits the client over the fixed rates. • Overnight lending rates established by the Bank of Canada see less fluctuation over time as compared to fixed rate offerings which are tied to the bond market. • The Bank of Canada can adjust the rates up to 8 times per year. Since 1996, upward trends have only lasted up to 14 months before a decreasing rate cycle was observed.

ARM Has Flexible Options!

• You can fix your payment higher on contract signing or use prepayment privileges to match the fixed rate payment. • You can lock into a fixed rate should you become rate sensitive.

ARM Exposes You to Lower Penalties!

• 60% of 5 year fixed mortgages are broken at/near the 38 month mark.

• With short term choices such as the 2 and 3 year or longer terms such as 7 and 10 year, there is more out there than just the 5 year fixed!

• Fixed rate mortgages are better for those who cannot tolerate or simply do not want increased risk over the term. • Payments remain the same eliminating the need to worry about rates. • Today’s fixed rates are still at alltime historical lows. One key consideration in going with an ARM is being able to afford the change in payments if they were to happen. Approval for a high ratio ARM or fixed mortgage of less than 5yrs is tighter as you must qualify at the benchmark rate of 5.34% today. This is good on one hand as the approved client has essentially stress tested their mortgage against a near 2% increase but on the other hand it forces some clients and many First Time Homebuyers into a 5 year fixed product.

and what you can be approved for. Short term Fixed and ARM products are generally offered at discounted rates, can save you money and can allow you to make your move sooner and with less exposure to penalties in comparison to a 5yr fixed. Some lenders also offer a 50/50 split product. My recommendation to those that prefer and qualify for the variable is to take the ARM rate but pay as if you had taken the fixed rate compounding the positive effect of your principal prepayment - best of both worlds.

Ultimately the decision is yours; I’m working for you!

Kris Grasty...

I advise clients on stress testing even with a 5 year term.

Summer Party Fun! Sweet Chilli Coconut Skewers

Serves 4 - Preparation time: 1 hour - Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients 165ml can coconut milk 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon fish sauce 800g / 1.5lbs beef rump steak, trimmed & cut into 2cm cubes

Coconut chilli sauce 1 tablespoon roughly chopped roasted unsalted peanuts 1 tablespoon shredded coconut, toasted 1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander leaves 1 bird’s eye chilli, deseeded, finely chopped (optional) 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce

Method: Combine coconut milk, sugar, sweet chilli sauce, cinnamon, cardamom, garlic and fish sauce in a non-metallic bowl. Add beef. Toss to make sure the beef is coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, longer if time permits. To make the coconut chilli sauce combine the peanuts, coconut, coriander, chilli, sweet chilli sauce and 3 teaspoons cold water in a bowl. Heat a greased barbecue plate or griddle on medium-high heat. Thread beef onto skewers. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes each side or until browned and cooked through. Drizzle with coconut chilli sauce. Serve with steamed rice, salad and lime wedges.

Healthy Asian-style Chicken Wings Makes about 8-16 chicken wings depending on size. Preparation time: 10 minutes plus 30 minutes marinating time - Cooking time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

1 kg/2 lbs chicken wings 2.5 cm/1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped 8 tablespoons soy sauce - 3 tablespoons sake or dry sherry 2 tablespoons sugar - 225g/8oz plain all purpose flour

Method: First make the marinade. Mix the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sugar and sake or cooking sherry in a bowl. Marinate the chicken wings in this sauce for at least 30 minutes. Make sure all wings are coated and turn a couple of times during the marinating process. Preheat oven to 200C / 400F / Gas Mark 6. Cover a large tray with baking parchment. Place the flour into a shallow bowl then drain the wings of the marinade. Dip each wing carefully into the flour, shake off any excess then place the wings on the prepared tray. Bake skin side up for 15 minutes. Then turn the wings over so that the skin side is down and bake for another 15 minutes. Finally turn skin side up again and bake for a final 15 minutes to make sure they are crispy. Serve with salad on a bed of lettuce leaves.
