Meet Ridge Meadows Hospital Auxiliary Long before the doors of Maple Ridge Hospital opened, a group of women were working behind the scenes to help bring the dream of a hospital to our communities a reality. Today, the Ridge Meadows Hospital Auxiliary history LV Ă€ UPO\ ZRYHQ LQWR WKH IDEULF RI WKH KHDOWKFDUH FRPPXQLW\ In the early days, three smaller auxiliaries were all working for a common FDXVH ,Q WKH (FRQRP\ &RWWDJH WKULIW VWRUH RSHQHG LWV GRRUV SURYLGLQJ the community with used clothing and miscellaneous items. The Auxiliaries amalgamated in 1978 and the Maple Ridge Hospital Auxiliary was created. This same year, the Auxiliary began sponsoring the Candy Striper Program, and opened a permanent gift shop in the hospital. In 1993, they changed their name to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Auxiliary to align with the new name of the hospital. The early fundraising efforts were small; catering banquets, card parties and donated hand-crafted items to be sold and local groups began to donate to the Auxiliary. In 2013 the brand new Golden Ears Gift Shop opened at the hospital and the Auxiliary contributed $150,000 to build the shop. Watercress esssss and Pea Soup

To Garnish: Handful baby watercress & a drizzle of olive oil

Method Heat half of the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the shallot, garlic and fry gently until softened about 3-4 minutes. Add the watercress, peas, parsley and hot stock or water, bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering and continue to simmer for 3 minutes, or until the peas are bright JUHHQ DQG MXVW WHQGHU 3RXU LQ WKH FUHDP WKHQ EOHQG WKRURXJKO\ XVLQJ D KDQG KHOG EOHQGHU 6HDVRQ WR WDVWH ZLWK salt and freshly ground black pepper, then stir in the remaining butter until melted. Roastedd Pumpkin Soup

Method

Preheat oven to 375F / 190C / Gas mark 5. Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces. Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it. Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) r. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. softened slightly. Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. oil. Maple Ridge Lapidary Club Tucked away at 23750 Fern Crescent, the Maple Ridge Lapidary Club has provided an informal, supportive workshop space for people to learn or develop their lapidary and metalworking skills since 1958. Starting from a small group of gem and rock enthusiasts, the Club has grown into a large, diverse membership where novice and experienced artists can meet to work on their projects and give or receive friendly advice. The shop is open several times a week, with drop-in visitor tours available on Friday evenings. Workshops on specific art forms are held throughout the year. These may include cabochon and glass bead making, soap stone carving, metalwork, and many forms of jewelry making.

The Maple Ridge Lapidary Club hosts the annual Rock and Gem Show at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall on February 27-28, 2016 showcasing rocks, gems and fossils collected from around the world. This year’s Gem Show theme is “Prehistoric – Dinosaurs and Fossils”, with vendors displaying their picks from the recent Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase. You can vote for your favorite works of art, take home a creation yourself, and bid on your favorite rock and gem collectables in the live auctions held each day at 2pm. There will be demonstrations of lapidary art forms and activities for children of all ages. A light lunch and snacks are available.
