Le Vent du Nord JUNO Award-winning Le Vent du Nord know how to turn the lost past into intensely listenable performances that push their roots in striking global directions. Drawing from yesterday and today, their performances stir emotions and touch the heart and soul!
“Just between us, may we say that Le Vent du Nord is THE best traditional Francophone band in this country?” pierre therrien, espace musique, plaisirs therrien
Come expecting more than tutus and tiaras with choreography by dance icons Kay Armstrong and Brian Macdonald, former Ballet BC star Simone Orlando and Ballet Kelowna’s Artistic Director David LaHay. Composers including Kelowna’s own jazz composer Neville Bowman, Vancouver’s Marcus Goddard, Toronto’s Linda Catlin Smith and Quebecois singer-songwriter Gilles Vigneault set a different tone for each work.

One Man Lord of the Rings Charles Ross Canadian actor Charles Ross, using a pair of elbow pads as his only prop, plays every character, casts every spell, fights every battle and shrinks Peter Jackson’s epic film trilogy down to a hilarious fantasy-filled homage to one of the most popular series of all time. Ross races through the entire Middle-earth trilogy at breakneck speed in just 3,600 seconds. If you are a fan—and better yet an über fan—of Lord of the Rings, this is a performance you will not want to miss.
“If you liked Lord of the Rings, you’ll love the Charlie Ross version.” sir ian mckellen (yes, gandalf! )
Ballet Kelowna launches its second decade with a ground-breaking program featuring Canadian choreographers and composers. From pioneering works to a cutting edge commission, Innovation will challenge ideas of contemporary ballet.

Jesse Peters With rave reviews as a singer-songwriter from distinguished jazz artists Ingrid Jensen and Diana Krall, Jesse Peters’ texture honours influences like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The result is a modern fusion of sound he recreates every time he sits in front of a piano and microphone. Let go and let the music and performance draw you in for the ride.

Having lived here for over 20 years, I know how amazing our community is. Throughout the past two months I’ve received an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement from everyone I have visited with or spoken to. Thank you for embracing me as the new owner and publisher with such open arms! I would also like to thank Jane Marshall for the opportunity, and for her continuous support and guidance since beginning this endeavour. Jane has clearly created something special in What’s On! that is valued by readers and advertisers alike. I’m honoured to be able to build on her creation.
Meadows are filled with activities and events. I commit to keeping you up to date with all of the things going on. Watch for details of Centennial Celebrations as the City of Pitt Meadows comes together to celebrate 100 years of community; the Maple Ridge Library has something happening for all ages throughout the Spring; and don’t forget about Earth Day at the end of April. Also, be sure to keep an eye on The ACT calendar so you don’t miss a show!

What a journey it has been since taking over What’s On! Ridge Meadows. I’m beyond excited to have my first issue finally on stands and moreover, looking forward to building the magazine, along with lasting partnerships, and serving Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for years to come.

Helpful Drycleaning advice fromDrycleaners: Brenda at West R idge How often should I have my wool items drycleaned?
Can I spot out stains from clothing?
There’s no definitive answer to this question. Someone wearing wool items to an industrial site is going to get them soiled faster than an office worker wearing the same outfit. We suggest that whenever spot cleaning and airing the outfit will no longer suffice, take your garments to a Drycleaner.
Some stains require quick attention, such as mustard and red wine. If light coloured silk fabrics become stained they should be taken to the drycleaners right away. For any fabric that can’t be washed, avoid trying home stain remover remedies such as club soda and salt, and, never rub the stain. If you’re not sure what can and can’t be applied then it’s best to leave it to the drycleaning professionals. It’s much cheaper to pay a professional drycleaner than it is to replace the garment.
Have more
questions?
Feel free to stop in and ask Brenda. With over 30 years of drycleaning and pressing experience she’s your fabric and drycleaning expert.

Meet Kate Mancer one of Canada’s most respected authorities in the seniors’ housing field.
Cedar Valley Manor in Mission
Based in the Lower Mainland, Kate is the author of the book The Future of Seniors’ Housing: Planning, Building and Operating Successful Seniors Housing Projects. She’s a frequent presenter at industry events and her company counts as its clients major QRW IRU SURÀ W DQG IRU SURÀ W VHQLRUV housing operators throughout BC. Her book was based in part on faceto-face conversations with 160 seniors living in retirement communities that provide meals and other services. In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, that would include communities such as Willow, Sunwood, Maple Ridge Seniors Village, Greystone and The Wesbrooke. Kate talks to seniors at every opportunity about housing issues Currently, Kate is talking to people about life lease housing, which she has been an advocate of since 1999 when she wrote a report for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation
called Alternate Tenure Arrangements. The report included 13 case studies of life lease projects across Canada, and Mancer visited each one to talk to the managers, sponsors, residents and WKH QRQ SURÀ W VRFLHWLHV WKDW UDQ WKHP Kate wrote another report on life leases in 2008 and one of the case studies in that report was very local—the Maple Ridge Legion life leases. Kate is thrilled to be working with two new life leases in BC—Cedar Valley Manor in Mission and Catherine Gardens in Vernon. She’s a fan because all of the research that’s been done on life leases shows that the degree of satisfaction is off the charts. People just love living in them, WR D VLJQLÀ FDQW H[WHQW EHFDXVH RI WKH sense of community that is always created in life lease housing projects. The number of life leases is growing in BC because they provide a great way to create high quality seniors housing without the need for government
funding, which has basically dried up. There are many reasons why seniors would consider moving into a life lease, an obvious one being a need to downsize. Other people are no longer physically able to maintain a house and property, or they are lonely and crave an increased sense of security and community. One thing Kate has observed over and over again in her career is that people very often wait too long to make a PRYH :KHQ WKH\ Ă€ QDOO\ GR PRYH many realize that their quality of life has improved enormously and they ask themselves: “why didn’t I do this long ago?â€?

Looking for a Home to Call Their Own. n. Tyrel is a good looking silver tabby boy who really enjoys his own company. He’s independent and likes it that way. He’s looking for a home where he doesn’t have to snuggle and cuddle too much. He really enjoys sitting off to the side and watching the world go by around him. If you could just make sure he has a full bowl of food, a comfortable chair to lounge ge in in, and are available for the occasional scratch than he will be happy. Tyrel lived d ass a stray on the streets for quite some time and he learned to fend for him mself. se e Tyrel obviously had a home at some point because he enjoys human n company, but it’s also clear that at some point someone hurt this boyy. Iff you u lo ook clo c sely at Bijou you u willl see she e iss the he perfect cat. She is a plain black, medium haired girl but if you look c se clo closer ser you will see the grayy tipped tipp p ed d fur, fur u the the e perfe perfec pe per ctly round face, and the beautiful eyes that any feline would kill for. If the Egyptians had seen Bijou they would have w worshipped her. She is sleek and agile. Dainty yet resilient. She can hypnotize you with her purr, then jolt you back to reality with one quick gentle swat. This girl has had a very unstable OLIH 6KH ZDV RULJLQDOO\ IRXQG DV D VWUD\ EDFN LQ DQG WKHQ VKXIĂ HG IURP KRPH WR KRPH EHIRUH Ă€ QDOO\ Ă€ QGLQJ KHU way to Katie’s Place. We were told she was temperamental and had litter box issues. These behaviors are typical for cats who are stressed out and anxious. Poor Bijou was just that. Anyone who had lived her life would have been too. Once she had some time to settle down and relax she started using the litter box regularly and her “temperamentalâ€? side is rarely seen. Bijou is very affectionate, but when she’s had enough of the mushy stuff she lets you know with a quick swat. She’s not aggressive just assertive. Come on in and have a closer look at this little gem. We are sure you will see she’s feline royalty.

Xtreme Willy Wonka Junior in April Theatre Seven Brides and Presents Seven Brothers at in May As Xtreme Theatre gears up for its 14th season, this grassroots troupe is busy preparing to wow audiences once again with outstanding choreography, sets, costuming, singing and acting rivaling professional theatre companies. What’s most amazing is that Xtreme is a tightknit community of more than 130 home learners, aged 5-to17, from throughout the lower mainland including as far away as North Vancouver. Producer Wendy Holm says she launched Xtreme Theatre to provide her theatrical daughter
with a wholesome creative outlet. In the beginning, there were 18 children. Then as word of the top-quality productions grew, there was such a long waiting list to join they decided to split the juniors and seniors into separate productions. Holm says this gives all the cast members a chance to shine. This year’s junior production is based on Roald Dahl’s classic book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and is sure to be fun for everyone. “Willy Wonka Junior” runs at
the ACT Wednesday April 16, Thursday April 17 and Saturday April 19 at 7pm. There is also a 2pm matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $14. Xtreme Theatre’s senior production is “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” based on the 1954 MGM musical set in 1850s Oregon. The show runs May 14 to 17 at 7pm, with a 2pm matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $16. Tickets can be purchased online at theactmapleridge.org or by phoning 604-476-2787.
