e g d i R e l Map It is hard to believe that Maple Ridge Environmental School is already experiencing its first Spring. It seems no time at all since we all gathered for the opening day in beautiful autumn sunshine in Allco Park. Since that day students, parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, special education assistants, an administrator and SFU researchers have established the strong foundations of a learning community. It has been a real privilege to watch students developing a sense of connection with the outdoor spaces that we have lived and learned in over the last seven months –Allco Park and Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. These two places have become true ‘homes’ that students have come to know intimately. Through personal experience students are developing an ecological understanding of community - plants, animals, fish, bugs, birds, waters, rocks, air, and humans are all part of one huge interconnected web.

opportunities for learning in the urban areas of Maple Ridge/ Pitt Meadows await the students. As we near the end of this academic year and look forward to the next we are reminded of a simple question:

“Whoever decided that the best place to engage in learning was in a classroom?” Dr John Telford, SFU For more info about the Environmental School visit www.sd42.ca

Students have also spent time in the urban centre of Maple Ridge. Regular visits to the library have provided the opportunity for students to further develop skills of inquiry, investigation, and self-directed learning. Many more

The Maple Ridge Concert Band

We’re a diverse community, comprised of members from various age groups, professions and walks of life. We meet once a week to rehearse, sharing our love for music with each other and the community. We’ve been around and back again, with a rich 50 plus years of history behind us. We are always accepting new members of any age with previous band experience. We play a variety of music, from symphonic works for wind ensemble to big band swing, traditional hymns to dixieland, and Sousa to Broadway musicals. “But I’ve never seen or heard of you before, where do you perform?” you may be asking, well, look around you, the Maple Ridge Concert Band has already infiltrated many of the regular events you know and adore, such as your beloved Pitt Meadows Day Parade on June 2nd, and the Annual Ladner Band Fest a mere week later on the 10th. In fact, we were even in the Santa Clause Parade last year, is it vaguely coming back to you? Yes WE were that marching band, but that’s only a small taste of the entire MRCB event pie.

74 Annual

Pitt Meadows Day

In June 2011, Pitt Meadows Day attracted the largest crowd in the history of the event. Thanks to the contribution made by local businesses, an estimated 25,000 residents and visitors of all ages enjoyed that celebration. Established in 1938, the Pitt Meadows Day Society has been active each year in organizing the festivities at Harris Road Park and other sites in the City. The dawn-to-dusk day starts with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Pitt Meadows Lions, followed by a parade through town to Harris Road Park, where families can enjoy the opening ceremonies, rides, activities and entertainment for all ages. The day ends with a Salmon and Chicken Barbeque followed by the Family Dance. At dusk, citizens can enjoy a fireworks display at Bonson Road Park. As a tribute to a deceased volunteer of Pitt Meadows Day Committee the Lynn Papp award is presented to a deserving youth who selflessly contributes their time to the community. NEW COMMEMORATIVE AWARD: A trophy for “parade entry demonstrating best community spirit” will be awarded in memory of the late Ron Morrisette, who was an enthusiastic organizer and volunteer for Pitt Meadows Day for many years.

Fathers Day Fish Release We are celebrating the life of the Chinook salmon on Father’s Day. Chinook are one of the seven species of salmon found on the Alouette River. Fry and parr (young fish) usually stay in freshwater 12 to 18 months before traveling downstream to estuaries, where they remain as smolts for several months. Chinook salmon may spend 1 to 8 years in the ocean (averaging from 3 to 4 years) before returning to their home rivers to spawn. Chinook spawn in larger and deeper waters than other salmon species and can be found on the spawning redds (nests) from September through to December. The health of our waterways along the Alouette River strongly affects the salmon’s lifecycle. The Alouette River Management Society is hosting its annual Chinook salmon release on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 17). Come on out and bring your dad to watch the Chinook get sent off for their journey out to sea. The release will be held in Maple Ridge Park at 11:30 am.
