Making a difference, one stop at a time! The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train hits the rails again in November, visiting over 140 communities across our network. Since the program’s inception back in 1999, more than $5.6 million and over 2.45 million pounds of food has been collected in Canada and the United States. The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fight against hunger. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talents and a corporate contribution to the local food bank. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community. Visit http://www.cpr.ca for more info.

Lest We Forget The Cenotaph in Pitt Meadows The cenotaph in Pitt Meadows is located right next to City Hall. The idea of having some kind of memorial in Pitt meadows was brought forward by a few Dutch immigrants who had come to Canada after the Second World War to look for a brighter life in Canada. And also in honour of the Canadian soldiers who had lost their lives liberating the Netherlands. It was in the late 1980’s that a plan was put forward to have a Remembrance in Pitt Meadows. The real instigator to this project was Walter Laseur, who went to some of the dairy farmers to collect some money so we could have a cairn to remember our liberators from the second Word War. As it turned out more money was collected than anticipated and an architect was consulted and a design was drawn up. Several proposals were brought forward and the one that was finally picked was the most expensive. The argument that was brought up was that it was too expensive. This was brought forward at a meeting, however the then Chairman of the Park & Recreation, Sieb Swierstra, won his argument and the cenotaph was built at its present location. In 1990 on Remembrance Day a few citizens gathered on the spot at 2 P.M. where the cenotaph is now located and had a small remembrance service. This was also done the following couple of years until the cenotaph was built in 1993. In 1994 was the first year that the service was held at the eleventh day of the eleventh month at eleven o’clock. This was also the first year that the Royal Canadian Legion fully participated in the ceremony. In 2005 plans were made to create a park. This also included to take a look at the cenotaph. Plans were made to redesign the cenotaph and it was decided to have a nice parade ground and to have everything level so that in the future anybody in a wheelchair would be able to place a wreath. The cenotaph was raised and put on a new

plinth. This made it possible to put names on the cenotaph. A lot of research went in to establish the names of the people of Pitt Meadows who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Thanks to the hard work of Jeff and Riley Davis who researched this and we were able to get these names on the cenotaph. Jeff is the archivist for the Legion. The last two names were only recently added. Up until 2008 the remembrance ceremonies were always held coming in to the cenotaph from Harris Road. This arrangement sometimes created problems with the traffic and thanks to the completion of the Spirit Square, we are now able to utilize the park and approach the cenotaph from the east through the park. This has been very successful the last 2 years. The attendance has grown from a dozen in 1990 to thousands in 2010. Let us all hope that we may celebrate Remembrance Day for many more years to come without adding more names to this cenotaph of citizens, who lost their lives for the freedom of Pitt Meadows. Sieb Swierstra

Turn off the TV & WIN! Local families and elementary students are being challenged to turn off the TV and replace this time with fun literacy activities. This communitywide Literacy Challenge is one component of the exciting new “Part of the Solution” Campaign being launched by the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Katzie Community Literacy Committee. “The Community Literacy Challenge is a great opportunity for families to learn together and to explore shared interests,” notes Angie McLeod, Literacy Outreach Coordinator. “A family might choose to cook together from a recipe, visit family storytime at the library, play Scrabble, or read a favorite book.” So, turn off the TV, track your literacy activities, and share your results by blogging at www. communityliteracy.ca. Blog entries might include a

Environmental School Project A Parent’s Perspective Learning in the Rain As an active outdoor family, we have been very excited at the prospect of the children learning in the natural environment, and at the same time, had some concerns that many parents have when presented with such a different way of learning.

Photo Credits: Craig Cerhit Weather and rain. How would my active, four year old child stay dry? How can he learn when he’s in the rain? What about the cold and dampness? We are fortunate to be able to spend time at the “school” and bear witness to how the kids are taught and what effect the rain has on their learning. What we’ve witnessed is that rain has become part of the learning environment. The weather becomes significant and rain replenishes the earth. My young son quickly learned the importance of staying dry and how rain plays such an important part of everyday life. We will do

24

our part as parents and make sure he goes out the door wearing proper clothing and the rain is not a barrier to learning. In fact, we believe it aids in their education. When the rain pours the kids tend to move in close together to help each other, attend to the activity, and listen closely to hear the educator’s voice. The rhythm of rain is like the rhythm of learning. It showers down and penetrates those whose minds are open to new ways and new experiences. We continue to enjoy learning in the rain.

Brick by Brick - Loaf by Loaf

This is a story about two people who, at opposite ends of the world, dreamed of building a home for children. My name is Barbara Giraud and I am a grandma. This translates to “Jaaja” in Lugandan and our dream was named in my honor. I work alone in Canada with a 23 year old boy, Edwin who lived in Jinja, Uganda. Edwin lives and takes care of children at Agape Children’s Home, where he has lived most of his life. We felt there had to be a way to take children from the garbage dumps and put them into a home; to have them attend school and learn to be productive citizens of their country, Uganda. How could we do this….a 65 year old woman and a 23 year old boy? If your dream is strong enough, you can do anything. I started baking banana bread. Four loaves a day and after nine months with

1,500 loaves baked, our Home of Angels started to take shape. Global TV filmed our story in February 2011 and the viewers started contacting us with donations and offers of baking the bread. We were able to finish the children’s home and start a staff facility which included a clinic and apartments for the aunties and social worker. We have come so far, but we have a long way to go…. If you would like to help, please contact me. Thank you, Barb Giraud Follow along on our journey at www.jaajabarbshomeofangels.blogspot.com jaajabarbshomeofangels@gmail.com

Warmth, from the Heart! EVENT: November 25 & 26 3rd Annual “Drive on the Line” Campaign.

While walking out of a movie theatre in downtown Vancouver on a chilly October night 6 years ago, Mission resident, Gregory Ould noticed a man lying in an alcove at the side of a building. Ould went up to the man, and asked if there was anything that he could do to help him out. Greg wasn’t prepared for what the man said to him. “I could use a blanket…to survive the night.” Blown away by those words, Greg went out and brought back a blanket. That act of one offer has continued to blossom from a family endeavor where he was joined by his young son Ben and daughter Emma, to a team of eight amazing board of directors and wonderful volunteers throughout the year.

It’s a two day-long blanket drive set along the Canada Line that runs from Waterfront Station to Richmond and YVR. They are always looking for volunteers that wish to give back a little “warmth from the heart”. Please visit www.BlanketBC.org for more info

From 67 blankets on their first blanket drive, Blanket BC has grown into an incorporated charity and has been able to distributed more than 50,000 blankets to date!

A community staple, the Christmas Haven n returns for its 14th year! Now a fixture in Maple Ridge, the 14th annual Christmas Haven will take place this December 24th. Year after year the Haven provides a sense of belonging and camaraderie on a night that often brings hardship to those with little or no support. The non-denominational, volunteer driven event provides a free, wheelchair accessible, warm welcoming atmosphere for people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic status, to enjoy a warm turkey dinner, Christmas carols, children’s activities, and a special gift from Santa. This year the Christmas Haven has teamed with the Salvation Army to provide food for the event. “In previous years we have asked for turkey donations,” says Corisa Bell, head of media promotions, entertainment and volunteer coordination. “This year the Haven is in need of cash donations and/or gifts for teenagers and adults.” Donations can be made at either the Pitt Meadows or Maple Ridge Leisure Centre’s, both of which will accept cash or debit. The event location is to be determined and will be posted to www.christmashaven.ca as soon as the details are available. For more information email christmashaven@ gmail.com, phone 778.861.9477 or visit the website at www.christmashaven.ca
