Congratulations to the Students of the Fraser Valley Academy of Dance! An Enormous Achievement. Nearly a dozen Fraser Valley Academy of Dance students (from Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Maple Ridge and Chilliwack) have been accepted into professional divisions, spring seminars and summer ballet intensive programs around North America as a result of successful auditions this year. Auditions are held in cities around the world for the limited spaces in many of these summer intensive and professional programs. An invitation to attend, in itself, is an enormous achievement, especially for students in this age group (12-18 yrs). Younger students may be selected on natural ability and potential talent, but older students must show that they already have the exceptional technique and dance quality required that is the result of the highest quality training.
Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Summer Session (2nd level audition for 2013-14 Professional Program) Erik Bruendl [15] (with scholarship award) of Maple Ridge
Boston Ballet School Summer Dance Program Brooke Helders [15] of Langley
School of Alberta Ballet Senior Summer School (2nd level audition for 2013-14 Professional Division) Kylie Janz [18] of Abbotsford Camille Robinson [17] of Abbotsford Amanda Sheffield [18] of Mission
Gelsey Kirkland Academy (New York City) Pre-Professional Intensive Kaylie Conner [14] of Chiliwack Marin Greenan [12] of Mission Anna Whitlock [13] of Mission
Acceptance into these programs is solid recognition of the advanced training FVAD students are receiving inside the school’s unassuming building located in Downtown Mission. Their success follows the acceptance of the school’s student, Mikayla Petty, into the world-renowned Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, England. Mikayla is now completing her second of three years at the Rambert School.
Junior Intensive Marin Greenan [12] of Mission Mikayla Stoker [13] of Deroche Fast-track Intensive Isabelle St-Martin [14] of Abbotsford
FVAD is extremely proud of the commitment and dedication to their training made by students, parents and teachers alike. We are very lucky to have such an accomplished school right in the heart of Mission.

Keep On Moving & Show Your Support! The Canadian Cancer Society would like to thank the community of Mission for your ongoing support of our organization. April was Daffodil month and businesses and residents came out in force purchasing boxes of fresh cut flowers and pins to show their support for the fight against cancer. If you’re looking for another way to have an impact, we would like to invite you to join our Abbotsford/Mission Relay for Life on June 14th! Team take turns walking our track for 12 hours. We start with a Celebration of our cancer survivors and caregivers who walk our first lap as our guests of honour; as the sun goes down, we remember those lost to cancer with our Luminaries; finally, the following morning, we commit as a community to continue to fight back against this disease. Fun activities and entertainment take place throughout the night to help keep everyone moving! Sign up as a team, survivor or caregiver, volunteer or sponsor! ... on which end of the knife blade you’re staring at, and who’s holding the gun to your head. Or so said my mother, before we lost her on that first night of our holidays. She’d taken up jogging the day before she disappeared and to this day we still don’t know where she is. I was ten at the time. I asked her where she was going. “Depends,” both her and Dad replied. “Depends on what?” I asked. “No. Depends! You’re barely out of them and I’m cursed by them. You’ll get it someday,” Mom said. I remember Dad staring out the window of that Mexican beach house with a strange look on his face as Mom ran off and it wasn’t from Montezuma’s revenge either. I’ll never get adults; life as a kid seems so easy. Only Mom never came back. I cried for days. Dad said she was just running. It took me many years to know from what.

old gal in the Wendy’s ads and she showed her to me on YouTube. I asked her whatever happened to the cantankerous old dearie. Mom told me she joined GCA (Geriatric Cougar Association. PS: they chase younger guys in wheel chairs) and while on a tour ran into the first Ronald Macdonald. He was apparently the originator of the Burger King phrase “Home of the Whopper” and decided to make him her new quarter pounder. Both were found passed away in their honeymoon bed. It was rumored she died with a smile on her face, whispering, “now that was 100% pure beef”. I thought Mom a bit strange to talk about fast food like that at such a sad event. Dad loved her like crazy. “She drives me nuts”, he’d always say and sometimes “me pistachios as well.” They thought kids said the craziest things! I knew adults were weird and feared I’d become one of them someday…. Cont. Visit www.whatsonmission.ca for the end of Frank’s short story.
